INTRODUCTION Minera Real de Angeles makes a very interesting case study in more ways than one. To begin with, it represents the first time a bulk silver deposit has been put into production in Mexico. Second, the feasibility and financing stage spanned a period when the silver price ranged from $4 to $40 per ounce. Third, there was a major devaluation of the peso and a financial crisis in Mexico at completion of the project. Fourth, the composition of the partnership (a major Canadian mining company, a major Mexican mining company and the host government's own mining entity) is worthy of note. This paper gives considerable background on the project and how it came to fruition. The political risk aspects and how the major provider of funds perceived Mexican risk at the time of decision to participate and afterwards are highlighted. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Real de Angeles deposit is located at an elevation of 2300 meters in Central Mexico in the State of Zacatecas (Figure 1). The closest village is Noria de Angeles, three kilometers to the north. The closest cities are Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi. The first-mentioned is one hour to the southwest by automobile over good roads. Exploitation of the vein outcrops probably began towards the end of the sixteenth century by the Spanish. Evidence of past mining activity is shown by numerous shafts, manways, dumps and ruins. Also, there were remnants of two rudimentary concentrating mills now obliterated by pit development and in the nearby town of Noria de Angeles the ruins of a small smelter still exist. Compania Minera Gamma, an affiliate of a major international mining company, investigated Real de Angeles from 1969 to 1971. Its evaluation program included 20 drill holes and comprehensive geological engineering and metallurgical studies. The results were not encouraging and the option on the property was dropped. In late August 1973 geologists representing Placer Mexicana which was later renamed Explomin were advised of the availability of the property and liked the prospects sufficiently to make an option payment soon due and to agree to outright purchase by year-end. A series of 34 holes were drilled by Explomin and a preliminary study indicated that the prospect had mine-making potential if the silver price was right. [ ] DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT Real de Angeles is best described as a large, low grade open pit silver mine because at today's prices approximately 70% of the realizable revenue is derived from that metal. ACCURATE knowledge of the solid solubilities of the elements that dissolve in the important base metals is needed for guidance in the preparation and heat-treatment of the alloys derived from these compo-nents. While there is still difference of opinion concerning the merits of the X-ray and microscopic methods of determining such solubilities, it is certainly true that the recent extensive use of X-ray diffraction to review the existing constitutional data has revealed many glaring inaccu-racies and has brought about a much improved knowledge of phase-boundary locations, which will inevitably come to include all of the important alloy systems. When the work is done with all necessary precautions it appears that in the majority of cases where the solubilities extend beyond a few tenths of a per cent the X-ray back-reflection technique is capable of furnishing the best of information in this field. For the most prolonged and thorough studies it is obviously advisable to combine the results of several methods, in particular, to obtain an agreement between X-ray and microscopic data. This paper reviews the work previously done on the solubilities of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in copper and, in considera-tion of the uncertainties thus made apparent, presents, new X-ray data obtained with the first three members of this group.

This paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. Clay Exploration by the Bureau of Mines Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Ione, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the White ware deposit near Lewis-town, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. The Clay Deposits The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. The sedimentary clays have been derived largely from the decomposition, erosion, and transportation of granites, gneisses, schists, and basalts. At Molalla, some

Until four years ago the market price of oil securities moved directly and immediately with the general list. This point, was first developed by the senior author in 1924 while making a statistical study of the relative movement of oil securities and the general market. Plotting the monthly averages of 17 oils against 233 industrials disclosed the sur- prising relationship shown in Fig. 1. The traditional vagaries of the oil business, the wide fluctuations in current supply and resulting abrupt changes in crude prices nevertheless produced no movements in the market price of oil securities as a group, which departed notably from the movements of the general market. The industrial importance of bacteriological leaching is finding increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ore and of exhausted mines. Another possible application of bio-leaching is in the extraction of ore concentrates, although here the first uses will likely be for ores that are refractory to conventional metallurgy. Biological leaching studies, which have been in progress for over ten years in this laboratory, are directed towards the more rapid and complete leaching of metals from their sulfides, particularly of copper, zinc, and nickel. The program involves not only laboratory studies, but pilot-plant operations and liaison with mining companies which are underwriting the cost of the investigations. Although the bacterial oxidation of mineral sulfides to the corresponding water-soluble sulfates has been occurring naturally for many centuries, the first documented recovery of solubilized metal from pregnant solution was at the Rio Tinto operation in Spain. At this location leaching variables were studied extensively in an empirical manner some years before the causative bacteria were first isolated from other leaching situations. Documentation of the presence of bacteria in leach waters of the Rio Tinto, Spain, operation was not confirmed until 1962.3 On this continent leaching was pioneered in the early

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams Au per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz. Au/ton). Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

In accordance with good industrial practice, Canadian metallic-ore concentration plants have always recycled a high proportion of process water to save reagents, save power, conserve water resources, and to protect the community water supplies, to give only a few reasons. In the last few years there has been awakened public concern for the environment and, consequently, government regulations have been added as additional reasons. Present recycling practices are summarized as a basis for improved plant design and operating procedures and for further research. In addition, an attempt is made to determine why plants do not recycle water in certain situations. Although not all Canadian mills are covered, the many examples given indicate the problems and the effort being made to solve them. Wherever available, the chemical quality of the water and the process requirements are indicated as well as the other parameters affecting water recycling at each operation.

VARIOUS organic compounds, such as borneol, carbon tetr a bromide, and hexachloroethane, solidify as transparent plastics with a fcc structure. Each of these substances undergoes a solid-state transformation from the plastic phase to a brittle phase at temperatures slightly above 20°C. Since it was known that these plastic crystals solidified like metals,1 it was decided to investigate the possibility that solid-state grain growth would occur in the same way as it does in metals. Two-dimensional grain growth in thin films of plastic organic compounds has been studied with the aid of cinemicrophotography. Samples varying in thickness between 250 and 1000 @ were prepared by subliming a thin layer of the compound onto a microscope slide plate which was then covered with a second slide plate.

To mine very weak carboniferous schists subjected to high ground pressures the underhand cut-and-fill stoping method was proposed using an artificial plate roof. An experimental stope was mined using three consecutive levels. Rock pressures, deformation of the reinforced concrete plate, and the quality of stowing were evaluated. It was found that roof deformations were minimized if the reinforced concrete plate and uncemented backfill were replaced with cemented backfill containing reinforcement near the bottom. The mining method prevented the occurrence of high rock pressures at the face. The method is suitable for mining subvertical ore bodies with large horizontal areas.

In 1978, Ozark Lead Co. made the decision to expand the capacity of its mine/mill complex by 33%. The objectives of the expansion were to increase mine production capacity by 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd), increase lead metal production by 21.8 kt/a (24,000 stpy), and to construct new facilities and modify existing equipment to accommodate increased production. This paper gives a brief explanation of the equipment installed and the overall production and metallurgical benefits realized from this expansion. The expansion was completed in the second half of 1980 with all equipment debugging and fine tuning completed by the first quarter of 1981. Concentrator modifications and improvements were basically restricted to four areas: materials handling, automation of the mill grinding circuit, increased flotation capacity, and concentrate dewatering.

IT is scarcely necessary to augment or amend the "Appreciation" of Dr. Douglas, from the pen of Dr. Albert A. Ledoux, which appeared in January, 1916, in Bulletin -No. -109 of the Institute. The author of that admirable summary enjoyed the great privilege of expressing while Dr. Douglas was yet among us (though already marked for death) the love and esteem with which we all regarded him. But now that his earthly life has ended, the historian must still be the eulogist. No line need be added or deleted in the portrait of him already drawn; it has only to be accepted now as a true likeness, and hung in the gallery of the immortals, illuminated' by the crowning glory of another world. . James Douglas was born at Quebec, Canada, November 4, 18:37. His father, James Douglas, was a distinguished physician and surgeon, known in many lands, especially in the Orient, and famous in his own country for his philanthropy as well as his skill, having established and directed for many years the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion of Canada. One of the latest literary labors of the son was the editing and publishing of his father's journal and reminiscences-a fascinating volume, the review of which, though a tempting task, I must here forego. Nearly fifty years ago, I had the great pleasure of spending an hour with the elder. Douglas, who guided me through his collection of Egyptian and Asiatic treasures. I might almost say souvenirs; so many of them were connected with personal experiences and exalted personages. The veteran's memory had already begun to fail with age, but his vivacity and imagination glowed all the, more brightly; and his reminiscences of travel and adventure were embroidered with Oriental magnificence. I felt, after that hour, as if I had visited a stately, half-ruined edifice, overgrown with vines and flowers. The father's genius, adventurous spirit and generous philanthropy descended to his versatile, yet practical son. Like other men of such temperament, James Douglas tried many things before circumstances beyond his own control forced him into the line of his, principal lifework. At the age of 18, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh, where he studied for two years. Returning to Canada,, he entered Queen's University, at Kingston, Ontario, where he was graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1858. Subsequently he studied medicine at Laval University, Quebec;

Discussion of the paper of CHARLES T. MALCOLMSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 271 to 289. E. W. PARKER, Washington, D. C.-The briquet or boulet, or coalette (whatever name is used) has come to stay as a part of the fuel supply, particularly for domestic purposes. During the past winter I have had some personal experience with the use of boulets made from anthracite coal. All of this winter I have used boulets in my furnacee and in my grate at my home in Washington. One reason for doing so is that we get the boulets at a price considerably cheaper than the prepared sizes of anthracite coal. The fuel has proved entirely satisfactory. One advantage possessed by the boulet is its absolutely uniform size, which makes the ventilation of the firebed practically perfect. The boulets burn until entirely consumed. There is not, even in an open grate fire, if the fire is kept constantly going, any unconsumed fuel passing through the grate bars. The boulets hold their form until entirely consumed and then break away into a clean white ash, with absolutely no clinker. That in itself is a particularly favorable recommendation to the housekeeper. Mr. Malcolmson has mentioned the fact that notwithstanding the smokeless character of anthracite, the boulets made from it emit smoke. The emission of smoke is due to the coal-tar pitch used as a binder. This is particularly noticeable if the fireman is somewhat careless, or wants to save labor, and feeds too much of the fuel on the fire at one time, cooling it down and thus causing an unnecessary amount of smoke. The smoke lasts but a short time, however, and if the fire is fed a little more frequently, with a small quantity of fuel at one time, the smoke is reduced to a minimum. I believe it will not be long before some of our engineers will have overcome the objectionable smoke; and will produce either from anthracite or from the so-called smokeless New River and Pocahontas semi-bituminous coals, a briquet which will be as smokeless as anthracite for all. practical purposes.

WHEN Georgius Agricola, in 155o, dedicated his now famous De re Metallica to the rulers of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and other, smaller principalities, he included in his review of previous works on similar subjects reference to two books written in German: one, an "anonymous, rather disorganized account of assaying for metallic content and of metals," which must be the Probierbüchlein, the other, "dealing - with veins, written by Calbus of Freiberg, a well-known physician."* Calbus is mentioned a second time-and cited-at the end of the Third Book of De re Metallica. Comparison of the citation with the Bergbüchlein leaves no doubt that Agricola considered Calbus of Freiberg the author of the latter work, although all the editions of the Bergbüchlein known now were published anonymously. It is generally accepted by those who have dealt with the bibliography of the Bergbüchleint that Calbus was Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe, who served the City of Freiberg, in Meissen, as health officer in 1497, as member of the City Council in 1509, and as mayor in 1514 and 1519. He died at Leipzig in 1523. In connection with the very garbled description of the mining compass toward the end of Chapter 3 of the Bergbüchlein it is of interest that von Kalbe is supposed to have been not only a physician of repute but a mathematician, astronomer, mine sur-

THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal. fields, and meth¬ods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various meth¬ods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment.

Anthracite mining developments have not been as spectacular as the advances made for bituminous coal. The reasons are well known, i.e., steeply pitching seams of the western, eastern, middle and southern fields, and the physical conditions of the strata in which the seams are situated. Beds with moderate pitches (30º to 35º or less) have been mined with coal planers, longwall with movable props, shaker chutes, coal borers and large diameter boring machines. However, the use of this equipment has been limited to a relatively small portion of the production. Long-hole drilling has been developed from a point where holes of 25 or 30 ft have been replaced by those up to 130 ft. This has been possible through the introduction of primacord and similar detonating agents that can fire a long train of explosives with one cap. The usual practice in long-hole mining is to drive a gangway, chutes and monkey heading, or return airway, in the normal development manner. Two breasts can then be driven from the lower to the upper level to act as openings for the beginning of the long-hole work. Following completion of the development, holes can then be drilled from the monkey headings 100 ft or more up the pitch through the coal to within 15 ft or more of the upper level, depending on the nature of the coal on the roof. The thickness of the coal bed determines the spacing of the long holes, although they usually are on 6-ft centers for a 6-ft thick coal seam. The Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive investigations and tests on the development of a hydraulic mining system to be used in conjunction with hydraulic hoisting. Tests were conducted in cooperation with a large anthracite producer in a coal seam from 10 ft 6 in. to 15 ft in thickness and on a pitch from 0º to 20. This particular mining procedure is adaptable only to thick seams on relatively flat pitch as the maneuverability of the hydraulic jumbo is an important restricting factor.

The Louisiana Continental Shelf is a submarine area extending offshore as much as one hundred miles. The Gulf bottom in this region varies considerably in extent, profile and composition and consists largely of sedimentary deposits, predominantly those of the Mississippi River. It is very young in a geological sense. Up to the present time few major structures have been erected offshore in the Gulf and no comprehensive preliminary tests have been carried out. Results of pile driving tests are of little value as actual bearing capacities far exceed the dynamic resistance to driving as measured by conventional formulas. Soils encountered are, with few exceptions, cohesive and piling consequently develop their supporting power through surface friction. Because of the time required and relatively high costs, no complete load tests have been made. The results of those tests which have been made, and information obtained from pulling piling in one structure, indicate that design loadings could be considerably increased, and it is contended that comprehensive preliminary investigations including an actual load test, combined with borings and examination of materials encountered by competent soil experts, would effect economies in design far in excess of their cost. The Louisiana Continental Shelf—General The Louisiana . . . continental shelf is a submarine area which extends seaward for as great a distance as one hundred miles off the present shoreline. The Gulf bottom in this region is characterized by low slopes and its outer margin is outlined by the fifty fathom (300 ft.) contour. South of the margin of the shelf the slopes steepen abruptly in the continental slope zone and plunge into the deeps of the Gulf of Mexico.l The engineer who is called upon to design a structure on this shelf is concerned only with the uppermost portion to a depth generally not to exceed Ioo to 150 ft. This layer is very young in a geological sense, and it has the characteristics usually associated with infancy. A few of these are lack of strength, lack of uniformity, and high water content. It consists of the sedimentary deposits of the various rivers and streams entering the Gulf. These streams are all heavily burdened in quantities sufficient to fill the areas at their mouths, were it not for the fact that continual subsidence, equal or greater in amount and acting directly opposite, prevail over the sedimentary workings of the streams. This subsidence has been estimated by geologists to be at the rate of at least one foot per century. Influence of Mississippi River The Mississippi River, which has been the predominant factor in the formation of practically all the Louisiana continental shelf, is one of two rivers flowing into the Gulf that have been able to build protruding deltas. The Mississippi has done so because of its enormous size and load. It deposits sediments in amounts sufficient to replace and actually gain on the amount of subsidence.

INTRODUCTION Slurry systems and mechanical conveying, represent the main methods of transporting solids from one area of a mineral processing plant to another. A well-designed slurry handling system can assist in lowering plant capital costs by reducing building size, simplifying plant layout and reducing operating costs by lowering maintenance and labour costs. This Paper has been prepared with the object of providing a practical approach to designing slurry systems. SLURRY CHARACTERISTICS Slurry is a mixture of crushed or ground rock mixed with water or a chemical solution, and can flow under several different conditions: (a) As a homogeneous suspension; (b) As a heterogeneous suspension; (c) With a moving bed (saltation); (d) With a stationary bed. Homogeneous flow takes place when the solids are uniformly distributed throughout a pipe and when particle sizes are smaller than 325 mesh. Heterogeneous is the most common slurry suspension. In this system, there is a gradual increase in concentration of solid particles towards the bottom of a pipe. There is a fairly wide range of velocities that fall within this system. In moving bed systems, the coarse particles settle out and bounce along the bottom of a pipe. Operating under these conditions tends to minimize wear and power requirements, but because this system operates within narrow velocity limits, pipelines frequently plug. Stationary bed conditions exist when coarse material has settled in the bottom of the pipe restricting the available area. These conditions should be avoided. DESIGNING A SLURRY SYSTEM Slurry can be transported either by pumping through a pipeline or by developing a gravity head and flowing through a pipe or along a launder.
