The paper of Reno H. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,' is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales's idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. The metal deposited from these solutions in their hot condition was principally copper; and, as they cooled, they deposited less and less copper and more and more manganese and zinc, until the copper practically disappeared. With this theory in general I have no fault to find, nor have I, it must be stated, the qualifications necessary to enable me to pass upon it critically; but it seems to me to be reasonable and probable, and is one which I am quite willing to accept. But Mr. Sales, for what seem to me to be insufficient reasons, has assumed that there is one deep central source of copper, relatively rich and small, from which all the solutions emanated. From this central source the solutions rose, through one channel or through a group of channels, to the surface, at and within a small area called the central copper zone,

The petroleum industry of western Pennsylvania and southwestern New York lias been one of phenomenal development. Greater and more sudden flucuations hare occurred in the price* of crude oil, and in all the collateral interests dependent upon its production, than in the case of any other mineral product which has been extensively exploited in the United States. This was more particularly so from the commencement of drilling for oil in 1859 down to the end of 1877. The experience gained during these early years has enabled the oil men to operate more intelligently since; the business is not now attended with the hazardous risks with which it is generally credited. The most important questions connected with the oil industry are those of (a) the oil-supply, and (6) the possible ultimate exhaustion of the field. Since 1876 my attention has been directed to the study of the statistics of the product of the oil regions. In January, 1880, in order to slow some interesting points connected with these questions, I prepared a graphic chart which was used to illustrate a lecture on petroleum delivered before the Franklin Institute. This chart was afterwards reconstructed in two distinct forms for publication in the census report. on Petroleum and its Products. These latter I have redrawn in a condensed form, and have extended them to include the statistics up to 1885, for publication in the Transac tions of the Institute, in conjuction with a map of the oil-re&'~IOIIS prepared by Mr. John F. CarII and myself. It is hoped that these illustrations will be found interesting to the members of the Institute, and of practical utility to oil-men, without any extended discussion, since it is my desire to make only such brief references to them and give such additional detailed facts as may serve to make the prominent features understood.

THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 3/4 million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done' on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. This paper is a resume of some of the accomplishments in direct rolling of strip from molten metal, and a description of some experimental developments in recent years. In all the early developmental work, we used a pair of rolls with a bath of metal between them, maintained by flanges or plates at the ends of the rolls. These flanges produced an excess cooling of the metal and built up enormous pressures at this point as the metal went through the bight of the rolls. Many means were tried for compensating for this excess cooling, such as thickening the strip at the edges, heating the end dams directly or by flowing more of the molten metal against them, leaving an open crotch below the end dam and above the bight of the roll, where the excessive pressures built up could be relieved by some of the metal squeezing out at this point, and so forth. All of these helped somewhat to solve the problem, so that very large heats of many metals melting up to 200°F., having commercially uniform gauges, could be rolled up to 24 in. in width. The rolls were made by mounting heavy rings on heavy shafts, and pressures up to 75,000 lb. per inch in width were used. Cooling of the rolls was generally done by spraying water on the outside surface of the rolls that came in contact with the molten metal. Roll life was commercial with brass, barely satisfactory with copper, and totally impractical with steels. The greatest difficulty encountered in all this work was caused by lack of uniformity in the product, owing to a folding action in the mill. Those who are familiar with the operation of a rolling mill know that a bar entering a mill moves at a lower speed than the peripheral speed of the roll. However, the metal solidifying from a bath in a direct rolling mill is cast at exactly the peripheral speed of the roll. This results in irregular folding of the metal, some irregular remelting of the previously solidified sections, and it is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases to exert enough pressure to weld these folded sections sufficiently into a sound product. In addition to this melange of solid, semisolid and liquid metal in the bath, we know that pressure near the freezing point of any alloy in which the constituents have different melting points—and I believe all of them have—causes the lower-melling-point constituent to be squeezed back until it becomes cold enough to solidify and go through the mill. This segregates all alloys, the segregation increasing with the pressures and the freezing ranges of the metals. Add to these problems the excessive roll-maintenance costs with high-melting-point metals and then, the greatest difficulty of all, the vanity of homo sapiens where a matter of possibly large importance is being considered, and the problems seemed almost insuperable. It was long ago obvious to me that something much more than the size of a corporation's money and self-assuradce was necessary if this process was to be made commercial. I should like to show you first the performance of the only mill we ever really designed and built, to see what might be done with a well constructed mill. Introduction In June 1981, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the US coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent." With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. Major Features and Benefits of Nuclear Measurement and Analysis Systems There are many features and benefits of nuclear instrumentation. The major benefit is that nuclear instrumentation is non-contacting. The measuring heads do not contact the process materials. This enables measurements of corrosive, abrasive, or high temperature materials with no loss of performance, reliability, or useful life. Also, there are no moving parts to wear or be fouled by dust or corrosion. Installation is simple and inexpensive. For instance, density gauges are simply clamped onto existing pipe runs. Weigh scales and level switches usually require nothing more than welding brackets to customers' equipment. Once installed, routine maintenance can be performed without interrupting the process. Thus, nuclear instrumentation is highly reliable and easily installed and maintained. The operating life of the instrumentation is virtually unlimited. Principle of Operation Nuclear belt weigh scales, point level switches and density gauges all operate on the gamma-ray transmission principle. A beam of gamma radiation from a radioisotopic source is projected through the process material either on a belt, in a vessel, or in a pipe. Opposite the source is a radiation detector whose electrical output is proportional to the intensity of the radiation it absorbs. Gamma radiation is part of the same electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses light, infrared, and x-rays. In many respects, gamma radiation behaves much like light. However, it is far more penetrating and can be transmitted through considerable thickness of materials that are opaque to visible light, e.g., several inches of steel. Types of Nuclear Instrumentation in Coal Preparation Plants There are four types of nuclear instrumentation presently being employed in coal preparation plants. They are: •Belt Weigh Scales •Point Level Switches •Density Gauges •Coal Analysis Equipment. Each type of instrumentation has a number of potential applications within the plant. What follows is a discussion of three different types of devices and their applications. Weigh Scales In coal preparation plants, weighing instruments are used for measuring material throughput, totalized weight, and batch weight on conveyor belts and other transport equipment. They are also used on drag chain conveyors, vibrating conveyors, and screw conveyors. Weighing is important for receiving the run-of-mine coal, controlling mass flow, scheduling production, and loading and shipping the washed coal to market. There are two basic types of weighing instruments: gravimetric and nongravimetric devices. Gravimetric devices are units which measure the pull of gravity on the material being weighed. Nongravimetric devices are not dependent on the force of gravity on the sample. Nuclear weigh scales are the most prevalent nongravimetric devices used. The nuclear weigh scale works on the same basic principle as other nuclear gauges. The greater the quantity of material placed in the path of a radiation beam, the more radiation will be absorbed by the material. In weigh scales, Cesium 137 source is generally placed above the moving stream of material so that the radiation is directed through the material. An ion chamber radiation detector is on the opposite side of the material. The radiation passing to the detector generates a signal which is inversely proportional to the weight of the material present. This signal is amplified and integrated with the speed of the process flow yielding the weight. The weight is indicated and can be totalized for throughput, batch control, etc. In conclusion, radiation weighing methods have become well established in the coal preparation industry throughout the world. ALTHOUGH I have already described to you the procedure for making assays of the ores (a thing that is not very different from what I wish to describe in the present chapter), I shall repeat it in substance, with the addition of the method of assaying gold, in order to tell you certain rules for weights which are very necessary to know, and above all in order to demonstrate to you the method of refining a small quantity of silver by the use of a cupel, and in order to tell you how there are (I find) only two ways that are customary for bringing silver to fineness. One is that of the cupel [copella] and the other is that of the cupeling hearth [cenneraccio], one for a small and the other for a large quantity. But although they are called by two names and appear to be two methods, the aim and the procedure of both is actually the same. Nor do I know of other difference between them than the carrying out of the method and the large or small quantity. Cupeling is a very useful thing for anyone who handles gold or silver to know. Indeed it is necessary, because it not only throws light on the work that is to be done but it also shows the truth [55] and the correct weights in large quantities. It is a quicker and easier way of bringing the work to the desired perfection than is afforded by the method for large quantities. Therefore, as you have heard, it is used in making assays in order to know exactly what quantity of the substance of silver or gold is in copper and lead or in ores, as well as in that melted material which remains among the charcoal and ashes. In short, it is the measure by which you have the certainty and safety of knowing that you have not been deceived by art or by your workmen, who had no other interest than their simple wages. Many workmen are found who are so untrustworthy that they no sooner get control of a thing than they think up some fraud, and even though some know that they must give an accounting they do not restrain themselves, although sometimes they would perhaps act with greater security and more deception than they do if they did not fear detection. Very little has been published recently on this subject in the mining journals or proceedings of societies. The attention of experts has been diverted perhaps by the demands for pan amalgamation of refractory ores. Yet free milling ores occur in many localities, and it may be interesting to have on record some data as to details of running a small test-mill, especially as details of results do not seem to be accessible to stndents and investigators. The attention which this process has attracted, especially in Europe, has led me to believe that members of the Institute would be interested in a report of the progress which has been made in the year and a half that has elapsed since my paper on the subject was read at the Colorado Meeting of this Institute. As already described in that paper (Duns., xxvi., 380), this process is a modificatioii of the open-hearth steel manufacture, whether acid or basic, collsistillg essentially in the division of the charge between two furnaces, one of which is charged about two hours earlier than the other, and tapped into the other after the charge in the latter has become fluid, the slag of the first bath being removed from it during the transfer. This description still remains true as far as it goes, but further experience has demonstrated that circumstances will very materially modify the relation of the two furnaces to each other, and the character of the work done in each of them. The function of the primary furnace has become more clearly and entirely that of doing the rough work of desiliconiziug and dephosphorizing, while that of the second or finishing-furnace has become almost entirely that of decarburizing and finighing the heat. To indicate these developments and their results is the object of this paper. In order to avoid needless repetition, I shall try to accomplish part of this object by giving a short resume' of what has been published elsewhere on this subject since my former paper was read. This will at least enable those interested to study the matter for themselves from original sources. Record high prices, burgeoning exploration programs, mine-mill openings, and plant expansions have all characterized a dramatic: resurgence of the US uranium industry in recent years. But while the bull is leading the way on the production side of the nuclear fuel cycle, there is reason for caution from the end-users' viewpoint. How fast will electrical demand grow in the years to come, and what portion of that will nuclear generators supply? How do utilities play their cards when the government holds two of the largest jokers in the deck-a policy on spent fuel reprocessing and a timetable for the fast breeder reactor? Is there a shortfall in domestic uranium supplies on the horizon?

THE wide scope of the causes and effects of ground movement and their interrelation to various kinds of mining and geological conditions are not always understood. Minimizing of roof movement by selection of suitable mining methods is closely allied to the problem of obtaining maximum safety in mining, but there are other questions involved: for example, mechanical developments which increase the production of ore and other minerals per shift or unit of labor but which, though highly ingenious, may increase hazards. More- over, the newer mobile loaders need much space for operation with longer protecting roof spans. Another problem emphasized by mechanization is the incompleteness of extraction of mineral, as there is no governmental requirement (except for limited leases on the public domain) in this country, as in European countries, and loss of coal in pillars is accepted by mine operators rather than risking the loss of an ex- pensive loading machine from a heavy roof fall. The extent to which losses of coal in mining are now being incurred is conjectural, for it has been fifteen years since there has been a comprehensive survey. In that study a loss of slightly over one-third of the coal in both anthracite and bituminous mining was indicated.

Low metal prices prevailing at the beginning of 1950 stimulated the search for improved mining methods. More experience was gained during the year with such new developments as the jackleg drill, millisecond delays as applied underground, trackless mining, and Diesel powered equipment. One of the outstanding innovations in mining practice was the starting of the Round Mountain "dry land gold dredging operation." The Government is now inviting the mining industry to open up every available source of new metal supply and this circumstance will undoubtedly speed the development of new machines. New methods will also result but it is doubtful if economic efficiency will be at its peak.

THE subject of this paper involves the crux of the industrial safety problem. It is not overstating the fact to say that "a plant can be made as safe as the management and the workers want it to be;" if such desire is not in evidence and it is not possible to maintain interest in the work of safety, there can be practically no headway beyond the first few steps. These first steps may be said to embrace simply the mechanical or equivalent guarding of tools and equipment and may be taken in a more or less perfunctory manner; but, it has been estimated, they will not effect a reduction of more than 25 to 35 per cent. in the accidents likely to occur in an unguarded plant. The question therefore may be pertinently asked, "Whose interest is meant in the title of this paper, employers', employees?, or both?" It has been repeatedly stated that no safety work of any importance can be carried on: in a plant unless the employer believes in the value of such work. Such statements are true, but have become threadbare with constant repetition and the public is led to believe, that employers differ from ordinary human beings, that their sympathy for their fellowmen has become dulled, and they can be awakened to a sense of the fitness of things with respect to safety, health, sanitation, working hours, etc. only by legislation. There will undoubtedly be found an employer, now and again, who measures down to such specification; but the speaker, in a number of years of close contact with large employers (and his experience has been duplicated by many others) has found that the employers are usually far in advance of the general public in matters affecting the welfare of their employees, including their safety, and not from a selfish viewpoint, but from the humanitarian, economic, etc. If, at times, there is an apparent lack of headway in the solution of some problem connected with employees' welfare, it is not so much due to indifference or a failure to be awake, on the part of the employer, as it is to a lack of knowledge of the way in which to proceed to its successful accomplishment. Further, employers are, only human and cannot follow. every one of the innumerable matters connected with an industry down to their minutest details; they must delegate certain individuals as their representatives, clothing them with the necessary authority to act. GRANULAR mineral products used primarily to form a protective and decorative coating on the weather surface of composition roofing are called "granules," "roofing granules," or "slate." The latter term is a relic of the early days of the industry, when crushed slate was the dominant type of granule in use. Asphalt roofing is made by saturating and then coating a continuous strip of felt with specially compounded asphalts. Granules are embedded in the hot asphalt on the top of the sheet, and mica or talc is dusted on the back. After passing through press rolls, the strip is looped on a conveyor for cooling and then cut into shingles or packaged as roll roofing. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Although the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known since the earliest days of recorded history, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was developed.' Large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric into a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up, for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low-priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on, other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from nearby fires. It was found that by in- creasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be success- fully embedded and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade, so as to cover the asphalt completely, a high degree of resistance to fire was attained.

The Mississippi river was discovered by French explorers that came southwestward, by way of the Great Lakes, from eastern Canada. Vignan, Joliet, De Champlain, and others of the French pioneers in the first half of the seventeenth century, dreamed of a short cut to China by means of the great waterways they explored. In a geographical book published in London in 1726 by Daniel Coxe an account is given of "a new and curious discovery and relation betwixt the river Meschachebe [Mississippi] and the South Sea, which separates America from China, by means of several large rivers and lakes". Louis Joliet, a fur-trader, and Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, reached the Mississippi and paddled their canoes on its broad waters on June 17, 1673.* They descended the river as far as the entry of the Arkansas tributary, and then returned overland to Canada, being deterred from going farther south by reason of Indian hostility. Several years later Robert de La Salle, a French trader, starting from Quebec, went westward to Lake Michigan and thence to the Illinois river, which he and his comrades descended in their canoes to the junction with the Mississippi, and then followed it to the sea. They reached the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. Thus the great central waterway of North America was made known. These French-Canadian voyageurs, or boatmen, traded with the Indians for furs in the Upper Mississippi valley, and when in need of bullets they noticed the outcrops of lead ore, from which, probably in the last decade of the seventeenth

Localized open pit slope failure was avoided as an apparent result of a practical rock mechanics program conducted at the Twin Buttes copper operation. The key to the program was the application of cable bolting, a technique that artificially supports open pit slopes using properly installed post-tensioned cables. As a result of the research and testing program, extensions of the cable bolting principal became significantly apparent. • The economics of artificial stabilization appear to be overwhelmingly favorable, and • Best practical applications are "final" pit slopes, slopes beneath permanent structures and potentially slope failing areas. Success of this research is manifested by the fact that similar stabilization systems are presently under consideration for Twin Buttes as well as other open pit operations.

We have found that our graphic representations were, in some cases, not perfectly understood. In the tables by which we illustrate all our tests, the records appearing in the vertical columns between the rulings are the results of the tests of iron having the percentages and characteristics noted at the top of the column. The record is made by a short horizontal line in such vertical columns. It is located in horizontal spaces, which divide the table into units of measure, to indicate the value of the record. For example, in the upper part of Table VII. is recorded the transverse strength of the series of tests with white iron and aluminum, which were reported in our former paper. The numbers at the extreme top are the test-numbers. The fractional numbers below are the percentages

ACID coal mine drainage presents a peculiarly difficult problem for two principal reasons. First is the fact that the amount of acid water discharged from active and abandoned mines constantly in- creases as coal fields are developed and thereby creates a steadily worsening nuisance of rapidly growing importance to the general public as well as to the coal industry. Second is the even more significant fact that there is no method yet known that will appreciably alleviate the acid water problem except at totally prohibitive cost to the coal operators. The problem is thus seen to be an urgent one. With a growing need for good quality water and a growing public demand for abatement of stream pollution, a large portion of the soft coal industry finds itself in the position of year by year dumping more and more acid into the streams and waterways and having no way in sight of improving the situation or even of keeping it from getting worse.

It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into the minutiae of a subject so vast, upon which volumes have already been written and volumes more might still be written, but simply to pass in review the characteristic features of that practice, which, dating from the blowing-in of the Edgar Thomson "A" furnace in 1879 and continuing down to the present day, has given to American blast-furnace operations a new significance. The blowing-in of " A" furnace marked the beginning of a new era in the science of iron-smelting if, indeed, it was not the very birth of science as applied to this industry in the United States. American blast-furnace practice in its generic sense and world-wide significance dates from that day, and really all that is valuable, all that is remarkable or worthy of discussion, is embraced in the experiences and achievements of the past fifteen years. Back of that we find only the dead level of mediocrity, or worse, a dispoition to " let well enough alone;" a general, almost universal, employment of " rule of thumb " methods. The application of scientific principles and methods was rare and, indeed, previous to the introduction of the Bessemer process in the early seventies, science had no place in controlling the operations of the American blast-furnace. The old practice consisted mainly in dumping raw materials in at the top of the furnace and tapping out iron and slag at the bottom, for the successful consummation of which the furnace-manager directed his best energies toward keeping the furnace as free as possible from "gobbing" with, alas ! but indifferent success. The burdening of the furnace was based largely on Mark Twain's receipt for " Johnny-cake," altered to suit the circumstances, viz.: a lot of ore, a lot of fuel and about a quarter of a lot of flux. The possible capacities of furnace-plants were not nearly realized. Enormous wastes were permitted, unheeded because not understood. In the use of fuel quantum suff. was always the rule. The flotation technique as employed by Florida phosphate producing companies for the beneficiation of fine phosphate particles has been standardized over the years. Lower recoveries of coarse phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still based on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.
