WHEN examining a coal property it is customary for the engineer to take channel samples at several coal faces. In doing so the extraneous matter, or partings, which can be removed by hand, or mechanically, with the facilities at hand, or proposed, is rejected. Where there is doubt concerning a stratum it is usually rejected from the main sample but part is taken for separate analysis. The samples are forwarded to a chemist for proximate analyses and determination of British thermal units, and, sometimes, ash fusion. Consideration is given all available commercial analyses but frequently the owner presents only the favorable ones. From the results thus obtained a general evaluation is made, monies are loaned or expended, markets are determined, and realization is estimated. In many instances, such grades are not substantiated and it is time we looked deeper for a basis which will prove more practical. Institute committees are working hard on analytic and use classifications and much valuable information has already been assembled and distributed. However, no single grade can be applied to any particular bed or region. Much study has been given the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, yet that bed is subject to material differences in a single section; i. e., some strata of a face may differ from others in structure and analysis, particularly in sulfur content. From some localities it yields a good carbonization fuel, while in others it is chemically unfit for such use. Traveling south to the Logan, W. Va., field we find the Cedar Grove (Island Creek) seam a hard, gray splint coal. In the same field, and not far distant, the same bed changes, both structurally and chemically, and consists of excellent gas coal. In Illinois the moisture content of a bed may vary greatly in different localities. We have seen mines in which part of the coal is excellent for special purpose use but is spoiled by the product from another part of the same mine.

IT IS well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated : A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of price, has no exact meaning; and in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and. that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage. will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization.

This story of the salting of a supposed diamond mine is a part of our Western history and deserves to be recorded in this book. It was more than a local affair, because it was concerned with persons in London and New York, as well as San Francisco. Part of the story has been told by Asbury Harpending in a little book published 12 years ago. Harpending (who died at New York in 1923) was in London in March, 1872, when he received a cable dispatch from William C. Ralston, the president of the Bank of California, stating that "a vast diamond field" had been discovered "in a remote section of the United States". Before starting for San Francisco, Harpending had an interview with Baron Rothschild, who showed a lively interest in the story, which was as follows: two weather-beaten prospectors went to the Bank of California and deposited some uncut diamonds and rubies for safe keeping; these precious stones were estimated to be worth $125,000. The men said that they had found the gems in "a desert portion of the West". They departed quietly, but the story was told in business circles; whereupon George D. Roberts, a mining engineer of wide experience and an associate of Ralston, sought an interview with the prospectors. One of them proved to be a man that had been in the employ of Roberts. Both prospectors, named Slack and Arnold, appeared "coy and cautious"; they were "simpleminded fellows", and were "afraid to trust anyone with the momentous secret ". They refused to divulge the place of discovery and declined "to part with their rights", but later "they became more amenable to reason" and expressed willingness to sell a half interest to

FLUXES, in general, may be classified according to their use as soldering, foundry or casting, and metallurgical and the chemistry of their action follows quite closely this division. The term foundry or casting fluxes, as used here, refers to the substances added to molten metals, preparatory to casting into molds or ingots, with the object of removing small amounts of impurities that have been introduced in handling or melting the metal, which was placed in a fair state of purity by the previous refining or metallurgical processes. The sources of these impurities are the oxide coating on the surface of the ingots, material extracted or mechanically removed from the crucible or furnace wall, and those formed by the reaction of the molten metal with the heating gases or furnace atmosphere. As commonly used, the term fluxes is applied to such materials as ammonium chloride, zinc chloride, salt, borax, and boric oxide. A second class of materials, usually called deoxidizers, includes substances such as metallic phosphides, sub-oxides, carbides, and bo-rides, that reduce the metallic oxides present in the metal. A third class includes various compounds that arc molten and non-volatile at the temperature of the molten metal and are used primarily to protect the surface of the metal from the action of the furnace or exterior atmosphere; to this class belong such mixtures as lime and fluorspar, lime and soda ash, various minerals, etc. In some cases these protective layers may act in a manner similar to the metallurgical fluxes and dissolve or unite with the oxide impurities of the metal, but as generally employed this latter action is negligible since there is little opportunity for the coverings to come into contact with more than the surface of the metal, and hence they arc without action on the body of the molten mass. The use of fluxes is the result of factory experience and tradition, but an extensive study has not been made of the chemical and physical actions that occur or the effects of these actions on the properties of the metal. A visitor to the Republic of South Africa might profitably make his first sightseeing objective the Voortrekker's Monument at the administrative capital, Pretoria. Here he will find memorialized in sculptured stone the epic of the migrations of Dutch colonists from the Cape in search of new pastures and to escape British rule. He will see depicted the battles with the Bantus who were coming south also in search of habitable land, the peace treaties with great chiefs and the rise of Afrikaaner leaders. An American will be struck by similarities in events with his own history as well as in clothes and in type of covered wagons of the colonists. Before the latter half of the 19th century, little that transpired in South Africa was of any great international moment. The country had not attracted a great many settlers (about 15,000 Europeans in 1800 compared to about 2 million in the American colonies in 1776). Although some gold was being mined the majority of population was engaged in trade or subsistence farming.

In all the books that treat of this matter, there ore given analyses of slags, their chemical formulae, the loss of iron, etc. ; but few, if any, give the character of the iron mode at the time; none give analyses and physical characteristics of the ores and limestones used, and they present merely isolated examples from various furnaces, and consequently one is more frequently puzzled than enlightened after reading them. The increased service demands on some of the products of the National Mallcable Castings Co. prompted it about eight years ago to investigate the electric furnace, both in America and in Europe. The process had already been sufficiently developed in Europe to lead us to believe that the electric furnace would most nearly meet our requirements. After further investigation and consultation with the highest authorities on the subject, we decided upon the Heroult type as the simplest and most practicable. In 1910, we built a furnace of this type, of 300 Ib. capacity, for experimental purposes, and although it was crudely constructed the quality of the material we were able to make justified the installation of a 6-ton Heroult furnace in 1912. This furnace has three electrodes, 17 in. in diameter, uses three-phase, 60-cycle current, and is equipped with Thury regulators, which give US good regulation and a uniform load on the line even when cold melting. The power factor of the furnace is 04 per cent. Since July, 1912, the furnace has been in continuous operation, producing up to the present time over 20,000 tons of both carbon and alloy steels of varying analyses and of exceptional quality. Both cold-and hot-metal charges have been used, with a power consumption of about 150 kw-hr. per ton in the case of hot-metal charges and from 500 to 600 kw-hr. per ton in the case of cold charges. The electric energy consumed varies according to the final analysis of the steel and the amount of refining required. Too much cannot be said about the refining possibilities of the electric furnace, for no other method of steel manufacture can compete with the electric in this respect. In proper operation lies the whole secret of success. That steel has been made electrically means nothing, for when the furnace is operated under oxidizing conditions the quality is no better than that of open-hearth material; but when properly made, electric steel is as good as

The entire production of Colombia for 1927 was that from the Tropical Oil Co. concession. Production was approximately 14,000,000 bbl., of which 12,081,000 bbl. were exported from the Mamonal terminal of the Andian National Corp. near Cartagena. The balance represents that refined and used or marketed within Colombia. As production in 1926 was only 6,443,540 bbl., the increase has been more than 100 per cent. This is partly due to the looping of the pipe line from the concession to the coast, and the resultant increase in capacity to 50,000 bbl. per day, and also to increased domestic sales. The refinery at Barranca has been doubled in capacity, and it is understood is now handling 5000 bbl. of crude daily. This gives the producing field a potential outlet of 55,000 bbl. daily. The Tropical Oil Co. completed 82 wells in 1927, with one abandoned for drilling difficulties. The average daily initial production was 1136 bbl. per well. The largest well is reported to be No. 173 La Cira, rated as 5000 bbl. initial. Most of the wells were drilled on the Infantas and La Cira structures, the latter located en echelon to the northwest of the main Infantas anticline, and separated from it only by a low saddle. Drilling operations on the Llanos fold, also en echelon with Infantas but to the southeast, and at San Luis, bearing about the same relationship to the Umir Hills uplift, are still more or less in the exploratory stage. The four structures mentioned cover approximately 15,000 acres, on which there are at present 223 producing wells. Drilling has been better than 92 per cent. successful since starting operations on this concession. Allowing 15 acres per well, which is 50 per cent. more than good practice in the Mid-Continent fields, there is thus room for 1000 wclls, which at the recent rate is a 10-year drilling campaign. This does not take into consideration the known deeper oil zones, which have not been prospected, but which are uniformly petroliferous at their outcrops to the eastward. It is estimated that with the enlarged pipe line capacity, as well as increased domestic consumption, the production for this country will be about 20,000,000 bbl. for the current year of 1928. THE period of new oil discoveries in Illinois began in February 1937, when The Pure Oil Co. found the Clay City field the forerunner of a number of limestone pools. The importance of the area was emphasized greatly in December of the same year with the discovery of excellent sand production by The Carter Oil Co. at Louden and in June, 1938, with the discovery by The Texas Co. of the Salem field producing from two sands and one lime- stone horizon. By September, 1939, new discoveries in Illinois were estimated to have added, under prevailing production practices, some 500,000,000 barrels to the crude oil reserves of the United States and to have produced to that date some 63,000,000 barrels with daily production passing the 300,000-barrel mark by Sept. 1.

ThE equilibrium phase diagram of the Mo-Cr system, described by anssen,' indicates that chromium and molybdenum form a continuous series of solid solutions above 1673K. The liquidus and solidus have been reported to have a minimum at about 12 at. pct Mo and 2133°K by Bloom and Grant2 and by Putnam, Potter, and Grant.3 X-ray studies by Trzebiatowski and ploszek4 and Baen and Duwez' revealed no indication of solid solution decomposition after long anneals at 1473", 1273", 923", and 873°K. However, Bloom and rant' by means of cooling and heating curve analysis of alloys containing up to 45 at. pct Mo found thermal effects at temperatures approximately 100" * 30°K below the liquidus. The only previous thermodynamic study of the Cr-Mo alloy system was made by Laffitte and Kuba-schewski6 who used the Knudsen effusion method at 1471°K. Orebodies with intricate three- dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer- assisted methods. 'The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral de- posits.

Reaching the miner with safety education" is R the ultimate goal, the main objective, of every safety program in the mining industry. If we can get safety education to every worker, and it is properly learned, enforced and obeyed, we should eliminate at least 85% of all potential accidents. We should then have very few accidents as a result of unsafe behavior, which, in turn, would allow us to concentrate most of our future efforts on preventing the types of accidents which are caused by faulty or defective machinery, equipment, tools and materials. An uninformed or uninitiated person would think that it should be a rather simple process to reach the miner with a safety education. Theoretically he would be right because here we get involved in a matter of semantics. When we say "reaching the miner with safety education" we actually mean that this education must also be accepted and learned by the miner; we intend to mean that safety must be observed and followed at all times. But in order to realize our complete meaning of the phrase, we must find the solution for a number of problems and obstacles which are well known to management and safety personnel.

DEVELOPMENT of the autoradiographic method in metallurgical research has been directed mainly toward gaining higher resolution, i.e., toward being able to locate segregation of a radioactive isotope on a finer scale. In the investigation reported, the liquid emulsion autoradiographic technique' used in the biological science was adapted to the autoradiography of metals. The distribution of carbon-14 in pure iron after various treatments was studied using this technique. Amorphous carbon uniformly labelled with carbon-14 at a specific activity of 6.95 microcuries per millimole was obtained from Tracerlab Inc. Carbon-14 emits P particles having a maximum energy of 157 kev and an average energy of about 50 kev. These ßs have a maximum range of about 30 mg per cm' and a half-thickness of about 3 mg per cm2. The iron used was spectroscopically pure electrolytic iron prepared by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Unhardened nuclear track emulsion, type NTB, was kindly supplied by the Eastman Kodak Co. In view of the fact that the fineness of the resultant bullion varies with the particular treatment to which the zinc-precipitate is subjected, and since there are considerable losses attributed to both methods, the following notes on the results obtained at the Waitekauri Extended mine, Maratoto, N. Z., may be of interest. The ordinary method of roasting the vacuum-dried precipitate was adopted instead of the treatment with sulphuric acid, the necessary facilities for the latter method not being available. Moreover, provided the ordinary method is carried out with the necessary care, it is questionable if it is not the most satisfactory where large quantities of precipitate have to be handled, and where (as is generally the case in this district) a considerable amount of silver is present. All the precipitate was first washed through a 40-mesh sieve. If it was necessary to recover the bullion at once from the accumulated short zinc, it was oxidized and melted separately; but, as a general rule, being heavily charged with bullion, it was placed on the bottom of the trays at, the top end of the extractor-boxes, where it acted as an excellent precipitant, the bullion being recovered at the next clean-up. After drying on a filter with the aid of a vacuum-pump, the precipitate was weighed and removed to the oxidizing furnace, which is similar to that generally in use in New Zealand, consisting essentially of an ordinary square tray of cast-iron, with 6-in. sides, built over a brick furnace. Wood is used as fuel. The tray is hooded over with sheet-iron, fitted with a sliding-door, and the fumes pass through a flue at the top into a dust-chamber, then into the open air. The first sintering of zinc ores was done at the Bartlesville plant of the National Zinc Co., under the auspices of the late Otto Rissman. Mr. Rissman, who had had a long experience in the treatment of zinc ores, well realized all the difficulties of satisfactorily roasting zinc concentrates, which were becoming finer and dustier as each year went by—thus increasing the difficulties of roasting them in the existing forms of roasters, which were furnaces of the Ropp, Hegeler or similar types. Mr. Rissman's idea of the advantages of sinter was expressed in this way: in a zinc ore dead-roasted in a mechanical furnace there are many particles that are just like an egg; that is, they have a hard and impervious film of fused material on the outside, and in the retorting this completely cuts off access of the reducing gases to the center of the egg until a temperature has been reached at which this shell of the egg can be broken down through fusion. A particle of sintered zinc sulphide, on the contrary, is exactly like a piece of sponge. The moment the retort reaches the temperature at which the reactions can take place, they begin, because the reducing gases have ready access to the interior of the particles by means of the pores of the '" sponge." His faith in the advantages of sinter was amply borne out by the results obtained at the pioneer sintering plant for zinc ores installed by the National Zinc Company. Early Method of Sintering The method of procedure at Bartlesville was to roast the zinc concentrates down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 per cent residual sulphide sulphur; to cool these, then to wet them down to the proper moisture and mix them in the mixer of the sintering plant; then to sinter them by means of the heat available from the residual sulphides. The sulphur contents of the roast varied considerably, of course, as it was difficult with the furnaces in use to control the roasting exactly at any point short of dead roast. Hence at times the concentrates were roasted a little too low to sinter readily, and at such times the lack of sulphur was made up by the addition of raw concentrates to the sintering-machine charge in suitable amount.

MANY of the failures in vocational education are due to the fact that the educational methods were not designed to the capabilities, habits, and environments of those to be trained; rather they were based on the policy that education is education and lessons are lessons, whether for youngsters of fifteen or for men of forty. Vocational education among miners involves, first, a study of the men themselves, their habits, and the use of their leisure time; second, a study of the differences between the methods of teaching required for men and for children. Certain fundamental requirements of training methods for miners are reasonably universal and may be applied with success to any ordinary mining community. The rate of labor turnover is another consideration; it would be useless to design a four-year course for men who remain in one place only a few months.

Just what is happening in the preparation and mineral separation stages are questions frequently asked about most processing plants. It is unusual to find the answers readily available in the operating metallurgical data. Knowledge is nominally available from metallurgical balances about the head ore grade, grade and recovery of the concentrates, and the plant tailings. However, the mechanisms which control grade recovery and losses are seldom monitored in such a way as to permit specific analysis: Thus, when questions about the effectiveness of the process are asked, the answers are based frequently upon intuitive professional judgments and local expertise. Detailed investigations of process functions are extensive in terms of manpower, time, and interference with production. An investigation method in which process operating conditions could be provided in a cost effective manner would assist in local process assessment and control. Such a collection of process operating data is defined as a process audit and the development of the necessary techniques forms the subject of this paper. A typical application to a lead-zinc concentrator highlights both the manner of implementing a process and the plant data made available for local use.
