Studies of the possible effect of plant water chemistry on the strength of unfired iron ore pellets apparently have not been reported in the literature. Naturally occurring soluble salts were removed from magnetic concentrate filter cakes obtained from several iron ore concentrators. Laboratory balling tests showed that unfired pellets made from these "clean" filter cakes were 50-100% stronger than the usual unfired pellets containing the salts. The fact that certain chemical additives dissolved in the water used for balling "clean" concentrates decreased the strength of unfired pellets indicates that salts in the plant process water may be responsible for lower strengths. According to chemical analyses of plant process waters at these plants, calcium and magnesium are probably the most detrimental salts in the plant circuits. It is suggested that calcium, magnesium, and other polyvalent cations in the mill process waters ion-exchange for lower-valence cations in the bentonite and thereby destroy the electrostatic-charge bonding in the green pellet. Some practical guidelines are also included for plant balling practices.

12.4 Application of Research Findings. After the findings of research have been evaluated and approved, there remains the problem of translating them into practical usage. It frequently happens that this is the more difficult phase of the research project. Hitherto, the problems have been largely associated with material objects and scientific laws. When the findings of research are implemented in the field, the human factor becomes the most important element bearing on success or failure. From this point on, the attitudes and reactions of people of all kinds are involved, and just how they are involved and their relation to successful implementation is the subject of the remainder of this section. 12.41. Management Attitudes. To engage in research at all implies management backing to a degree. But this could be dictated by overall company policy or by just some executives in the hierarchy of management. The existence of research per se does not necessarily mean that there is a solid, unanimous echelon of management executives who sincerely believe in the fruits of research, who have an earnest desire to make breakthroughs, and who have a willingness to take calculated risks. Under the ideal condition of complete management backing, translating the results of research into practice is greatly facilitated. If management accepts the results of research as valid, the order is given, or it has been established by precedent that those results will be implemented. The rest of the organization will have grown to accept the fact that this is so, and that the results must be given a fair trial in the field. However, this ideal condition probably exists but rarely, and it is against a background of incomplete, or partial, management backing that most results of research must be implemented. At the present time, the climate for research in the mining field is less than perfect but is improving rapidly as the realization grows within the industry that the way toward taking its proper place in the Space Age is by applying to mining the philosophy and techniques of research that made the Space Age possible.

The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution.

MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. THE brittleness of the intermetallics usually render their deformation studies at ordinary temperatures using conventional techniques inadequate. On the other hand, although X-ray line broadening measurements is not a complementary technique, it provides a means for gaining limited but useful information on the cold worked state of these materials. In the present instance, a study of the effects of cold work in the lead telluride intermetallic compound was carried out by analyzing the diffraction profiles of the deformed and the corresponding annealed samples. An ingot of PbTe was prepared by induction melting high-purity lead and tellurium in a quartz crucible under an atmosphere of argon. After homo-genization, the ingot was ground to -325 mesh at room temperature, and using a polished die the cold- worked powder was pressed into the form of flat faced briquets for diffraction measurements. A spectrometer with 0.125 deg per min scanning velocity, CuKa radiation, pulse height analyzer, and a proportional counter were employed in the X-ray measurements, and the powder peaks were collected from the sample in fully cold-worked state and after it had been annealed to relieve the effects of cold work completely. For reliable estimates of the peak extremities, small angular ranges where the tails merged into the background were point counted. Fourier inversions of the experimental peaks were carried out in an IBM 705 computer using the procedures introduced by stokes.' A grain model for gas-solid reactions in cylindrical pellets is formulated and solved numerically. The numerical solution demonstrates when it is safe to assume either a thin disk or a long cylinder geometry, and when the more general two dimensional geometry must be used. The numerical solution also demonstrates the solution of a two-dimensional moving boundary problem (i.e., when the reaction is diffusion controlled and the ratio of the height to diameter dictates two dimensions).

A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

The general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage. thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake.

As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. Spokane Meeting and Excursions. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute have been sent to members in the Circular of May 8, 1909. The list of those intending to go on the excursion is filling up, and since preference in position of state-room or berth is given in the order of application, members and guests who expect to accompany the party and have not yet communicated with Mr.. Theodore Dwight, 29 West 39th St., New York, N. Y., are earnestly requested to do so without delay. For convenience of the members a summary of the additional information is here presented. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago about September 15. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals during the entire trip, except during the Yellowstone Park tour. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through. The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

A new departure of unusual importance in Institute annals was in-augurated by the trip of President Philip N. Moore to the Local Sections at Nevada, Southern California, San Francisco, Seattle, Spokane, Montana, Utah, and Colorado. Everywhere the visit of the President was the occasion of an enthusiastic and successful meeting, which is reflected in the account, published under the different Sections in this and other Bulletins. The President also joined the members of the Columbia Section in their visit to Nelson, British Columbia, at the International Mining Convention, which was attended by mining engineers of Canada and the United States. The President of the Canadian Mining Institute, as well as the officers and members of the Western Section also attended this convention. For full particulars we recommend to our readers the ac- count of this very interesting meeting, which is given on another page of this. Bulletin. It is believed that this is the first meeting between the mining engineers of America and any other country since America joined the Allies. The Secretary of the Institute accompanied the President at the first four meetings and was expecting to attend the others also, but was called home by a death in his family.

There are not many data about early coal production in Kentucky, but some legislative reports, early geological studies and occasional newspaper articles have left some figures. The earliest production with any authentic record is that of Lee County, the coal being boated down the Kentucky River to Frankfort. While never a large producer, this county has the longest record in the State. Production is recorded in several of the western coal counties in 1820, and in several others a few years later. The early production in Greenup County was for the iron furnaces operating there. Clay County had a large salt output in the early days and this required a large output, for those days, of coal; the amount of fuel is based on the quantity of salt. It will be noticed that several counties on the Ohio River produced considerable quantities of coal before the Civil War, much of it being consumed by the river steamers. Since the end of the war, these counties have never occupied the relatively important position they had prior to that time. All of the coal produced in the eastern mountain counties moved out of them by water before the war, and during that struggle nearly all mining was stopped. The growth of the railroads after the war greatly reduced the river traffic from these counties, and in some cases it was never renewed. The coal shipped from Lawrence County prior to 1861 all moved by water; after that date there was no production excepting for local use until 1879, and since that time, all shipments have been by rail. Some of the early railroad reports have been helpful in reporting shipments, but for the early years very few of them can be found, and after about 1879 the quantities reported cannot be identified as to origin. Pres. J. B. Hill, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, furnished all of the data available for his line. Sources of data are shown on Table 61; other figures are estimated. A list of early Kentucky mines is given in Table 13.

Stringent controls now placed on the quality of coal make it important to be able to predict not only the tonnage and the grade of the coal in situ, but also the recovery factory and average grade after the coal has been washed. The established techniques of linear geostatistics (ordinary kriging) can be used to estimate the total tonnage and the grade of the coal in situ, but more sophisticated techniques are required for predicting the characteristics of washed coal. Two approaches are currently being investigated at Fontainebleau. One involves a parametric model of the washability curves and disjunctive kriging. This is described in Armstrong (1980(a) and (b)). The other is similar to the service variable approach used for estimating recoverable uranium reserves. The method is described in this paper.

At a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- or 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a pre-liminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills at one of the mines, but, in general, apply to the smaller mills also. The Nature of the Ore. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a&apos; highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralizatioll comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amouiits that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold mere ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and from 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater. The moisture and clay made the ore so sticky that it had to be raked over steeply-inclined grizzlies; it hung in the ore-bins,

In a cooperative research effort, the US Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Co. investigated floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground coal mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with underground openings, causing roof and pillar problems. The floor and roof analysis techniques that were used in the USBM/Pittston investigation may have a wide range of applicability in the mining industry. Recommended orientations and geometries for mining operations are directed at floor problems, but may also enhance roof stability.
