THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette's observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. Eight years later, in 1823, the Perry furnace five miles north of Caledonia, Washington County, was constructed to smelt limonite ore. It was not until 1890 to 1900, however, that these ores attracted considerable attention. Nearly 300,000 tons had been produced by 1911, and this production had come from 24 counties in the Ozark region. For the next two decades, until 1931, essentially all activities ceased. During the depression years of the thirties when employment was low many people turned to the brown ores for subsistence; consequently production was increased. World War II produced another stimulus to the industry. The availability of risk capital in the past three years has revived interest in these deposits, although no appreciable increase in production has resulted.

For the US coal industry, 1978 was a nightmarish recurrence of 1977 as the United Mine Workers strike cut into production during the first three months of 1978, followed by the strike against the Norfolk and Western Railway during the summer and early autumn. Coking coal production was floored by the one-two punch of environmental constraints on US coke ovens and competition from low-cost, high-quality imports. At the same time, US ex orts of coal fell to their lowest level since 1962. And in the face of all of this, steam coal consumption was sluggish as utilities burned huge amounts of oil to conserve coal stockpiles during the UMW strike. This was followed by decreased electrical demands due to mild summer weather in many parts of the country and dramatically improved availability of hydroelectric power.

Mining of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district has been carried on energetically during the past 60 years, and their development has created a large iron and steel manufacturing center, the only important one in the South. The district produces approximately 10 per cent. of all the iron ore of the United States (80 per cent. of the Alabama ore mined is red ore); also, 40 of the 400 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible through investigations that resulted in radical changes in furnace practice, and a still greater impetus will come from the study of the low-grade, high-silica ores, as a result on which they will be made amenable to treatment by concentration. Mining practice in this district has been comparatively simple because of the occurrence of the ore; but with the rapid extension of the workings and the disturbed condition of the ore bed at some distance from the outcrop, more difficult conditions are encountered and the tendency is toward worse rather than better conditions. Should the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam become available through beneficiation, mining practice will have to be modified to meet the new conditions, which will be rendered more difficult by the increased weight of cover that will exist at considerable distances from the outcrop. Support of workings will require greater attention and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely on the successful solution of the problems of working and handling the ore. History and EaRly Development The first explorers of the coal and mineral lands of Alabama were blacksmiths and mechanics mustered out of the army after the war of 1812. These men recognized the red rock of the Birmingham district as iron ore, and utilized it in making cooking utensils and farm implements. The first blast furnace was built and operated at Russellville in 1818, where also was a foundry and rolling mill. Soft ore was used at that time, but, in 1864, the first red hematite ore of Red Mountain was smelted, near Irondale. General Geology of the Northern Black Hills. The " Black Hills of Dakota," to the northern part of which the following observations apply, occupy a position on either side of the boundary between Wyoming and South Dakota, approximately between 103" 15' and 104" 48' of west longitude and 43 15' to 43" 50' of north latitude. The area is roughly 4160 square miles.* (See Plate I.) As has been pointed out by Profs. H. O. Hofman, I?. R. Carpenter and others, and illustrated by Mr. Newton in the publications of the United States Geological Survey, these hills are made up of a large number of the known formations from the Archean to the Tertiary, which latter constitutes the border of the region. The mining operations are largely confined to the interior of this area, and the centers from which they are conducted (Deadwood, Lead City, Galena, etc.) are situated near the line of junction of the Archean schists and quartzite, supposed to represent the Potsdam Sandstone of the N. The Institute has lost a valued member by the death of Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. He bore the name of one who was largely instrumental in founding the Institute, and to whose support and guidance as active member, Vice-President, and President, the Institute owes. much. Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was the nephew of the late Eckley B. Coxe. He held a large interest in the coal estates owned and developed by his family, and he was thus naturally led to take a continuing interest in mining matters, and for years and up to the time of his death was a full member of the Institute. He died at his residence, Drifton, Pa., on Sept. 20 last, aged 44. He was a member of the class of '93 of the University of Pennsylvania,. of which great institution he was a devoted alumnus. His educational and charitable activities were numerous, but his chief life-work and interest was in archeological investigation and research in Egypt, carried on through the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania of which Museum he was President. The discoveries made by the various expeditions financed and directed by him, and the notable publications issued by his direction and at his expense, chronicling the results, are among the most important researches ever made of buried Egypt. Mr. Coxe was a member of the International Historical Society and of many educational and charitable organizations. By his will, among other bequests, he left $500,000 to the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and $100,000 to the University, the income of the latter fund to be applied to increasing the salaries of the professors of the Institution. He also left $100,000 to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, of which he was a manager, and in addition thereto $10,000 of which the income is to be applied in providing Christmas presents for .the child patients, and in providing an annual dinner for the patients and attendants of the hospital. He bequeathed $50,000 to Leonard Hall, an associate mission of the Episcopal Church, at South Bethlehem, Pa., $25,000 to the Epileptic Hospital and Colony Farm (Philadelphia) ; $50,000 to the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases; $15,000 to the United Charities of Hazleton, Pa., the income to be applied to the salaries of nurses; and $25,000 to the Mining and Mechanical Institute of the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, founded by his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, and of which Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was an active trustee up to the time of his death. This Institute is known as one of the best preparatory schools for technical education in Pennsylvania, and is mainly devoted to extending an opportunity for education by day and night schools to the boys and young men of the Anthracite Region. Its principal is an alumnus of Lehigh University; it has an able local Board of Trustees, and an Advisory Board consisting of the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, the President of Lafayette College, and the President of Lehigh University, all three of which institutions have established prize scholarships in the institute. Mr. Coxe carne of a distinguished ancestry, the record of which is fully given in the biographical notice of his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, by Dr. R. W. Raymond, in Vol. XXV of the Transactions.`

THE Liberty Bell cyanide precipitate is unique in that it is apt to vary widely in composition in the course of very short, periods of time, and a method of refining and melting that would prove highly satisfactory at one cleanup would yield almost an hopeless "mess" it a second. Table I gives a general conception of the wide range in grade and composition of those raw precipitates. It is evident that no one standard flux could be expected to produce a high-grade bullion with such a widely variable precipitate, and that any method of treatment with acid requires most careful consideration. Refining by Acids Naturally, our first efforts to improve our precipitates were directed along the lines of acid treatment. Table II embodies the results of careful sampling and analysis of one cleanup at the time when wet refining reached its maximum development at this mill. We have now discarded all methods of wet refining, successfully replacing them by amore scientific method of flux calculation described herein, but it is believed that a general description of this wet refining is warranted as it throws some interesting side lights on acid refining in general.

The task of developing controls in the mining and manufacturing industries to give them a tighter grip on operating costs has afforded this author an interesting vantage point for observing certain practices common to both industries. Of course, each of these industries has problems unique to itself, but all industries have many common problems. After all, every industry is a business and every business is concerned with the task of producing its wares as profitably as possible. While many differences between businesses in different industries are known, the author is convinced through experience that the mining industry has much more in common with the manufacturing industry than is generally acknowledged. Four principal questions come to mind in the comparison of mining with manufacturing: How different are the management control methods in these two worlds? How do both industries go about the task of controlling costs? How does the mining industry compare in terms of the effectiveness of its workers? And perhaps most important, what can the mining industry learn from what the manufacturing industry is doing?

Probing a mineralized area with a core drill to find out what's there is fundamentally a simple task, but a costly one. Quite commonly it costs $10, and sometimes more, to extract and assay each foot of drill core obtained. Yet, it is not unusual today to drill hundreds of holes on one mineral property. The initial objective of such probing is almost always simply to determine the potential worth of the ore- body, if any exists, and the question naturally arises: How little sampling is enough for this determination? The mathematics of statistics infer accuracy of estimates largely from the sheer number of samples taken. Mineral exploration usually involves accumulation of large numbers of samples, and thus it is usually not difficult to place narrow confidence limits on either side of the estimated average grade of a sampled orebody. The determination may, or may not, be as accurate as the derivations imply. If it is not, the fault is probably one of misapplication and not with the statistical processes themselves. Un- fortunately, indications are strong that the ordinary statistics of sampling usually cannot be applied to orebody exploration samples with actual attainment of the accuracy of estimate that they express mathematically. For this reason, a more deductive, less mathematical analysis of the sampling may well be worthwhile.

DURING the last decade many conditions have been encountered that have materially increased the cost of the production of coal. As in most cases it has not been practicable to increase the selling price of such coal sufficiently to insure the necessary margin of profit, the mine management has been forced to avail itself of what might be termed unusual means that costs might be held at as low a figure as possible. The so-called efficiency engineer has been called upon, costly power plants have been built and machinery has been installed to replace manual labor wherever possible. Another aid used recently to secure economies through the more intelligent production of coal, is the chemist. As the coal industry, barring the production of byproduct coke, does not at once give evidence of its need of the services of the chemist, the writer will endeavor to point out a few of the services that this branch of the staff has been able to render. The preparation of coal in the past has been carried on entirely upon an empirical basis, that is, the criterion adopted has been an ocular inspection. Unfortunately, the appearance of a coal and especially of an anthracite, has but little relation to its fuel value, and as long as coal is purchased for the heat that 'can be obtained from it by its combustion, the quantity of such heat that is purchased must be one of the principal desiderata in selecting or preparing a coal. Were coals purchased for use as bric-a-brac or for exhibition in museums it might be both wise and just to purchase them upon their appearance. After 4 or 5 years of investigation the fact has been established that coals of very inferior appearance, and I now have special reference to anthracite, might and often did possess heating and burning properties superior to those possessed by, bright coals which in the past had commanded considerable and uniform premiums in the market. This being the case the question arose as to whether the trade could be convinced of this fact. WE must begin by defining what we mean by the Copperbelt. This term is generally used to denote that region of Northern Rhodesia in which the copper mines of that territory are situated. The first published use of the term Copperbelt we have been able to trace dates back to 1905. The African World of December of that year contained an article entitled "The Great Northern Copper Belts of Rhodesia." The next reference we have traced is in 1909 in an article in the Transactions of the Geo- logical Society of South Africa. It began to be used generally in the late twenties and by 1929 was in common use to denote the region which today contains the existing large copper mines of Northern Rhodesia. The first of three accompanying maps is a very simple outline map of Africa showing where Rhodesia is within Africa, and where the Copperbelt is within Rhodesia. The second is a larger scale map of the Copperbelt itself. It will be seen that within the present Copperbelt there are six producing mines. Two of these are new and four are relatively established, having started operations between the two world wars. The Copperbelt also includes a town- ship called Ndola, which is not a mining town, but a railhead on the main line. This town has developed primarily as a result of the mining industry in the neighborhood. It describes itself as the Gateway to the Copperbelt and is shortly to become a refining center.

(written discussion ?).- Mr. Neal's paper on the petroleum hydrology of the Mid-Continent district is a welcome contribution on a subject concerning which none too much is known; it is, I think, the first published description of the chemical character of the oil-field waters of the great Mid-Continent area. When studying the oil-field waters of the California fields several years ago, the differences in chemical composition between waters occurring at various horizons seemed to be sufficient to enable the operators to use water analyses as a basis for determining the source of the water flooding a well; and it is gratifying to find that, Mr. Neal has arrived at a similar conclusion. The splitting of the coal by partings is a familiar feature of many coal beds. The partings are normally argillaceous, more rarely sandy or calcareous. The material is usually fine-grained, less frequently coarse-grained to conglomeratic. Many partings are wedge-shaped, others are lenticular, and in some coal beds thin partings but one or two inches thick persist as thin sheets throughout areas of regional extent. The origin of the partings differs, and in some cases is obscure and uncertain. Origin of Thick Partings Wedge-shaped Partings Wedge-shaped partings are normally of indefinite linear extent but of short transverse section. They are developed adjacent to the borders of the original peat-forming swamp or around islands formed within the swamp, hence their presence is indicative of the approximate limit of the coal bed or of an interruption in the continuity of the coal bed. Following deposition of the parting gradual reestablishment of swamp conditions is followed by burial of the parting with accumulating peat. Partings developed adjacent to the borders of swamps normally thicken toward the periphery of the swamp and represent either detrital materials carried in from adjacent land areas during floods or materials carried in by advancing waves and currents after a barrier confining the swamp had been breached by the waves. Partings formed in the manner first mentioned should become coarser and more arenaceous toward the source of supply of the detrital materials, and the overlying and underlying coal should gradually grade into carbonaceous shale as the margin of the original swamp is approached. Partings formed by advance of waves across a barrier should be largely or entirely arenaceous, thin wedges of short longitudinal section, possibly with fossils of marine or brackish affinity. The subjacent coal normally should "pinch out" against the barrier, and the overlying coal continue to the barrier, or even extend across it, depending on the geographic conditions established following the breaching of the original barrier. One of the features of oil-field work that puzzles operator, chemist, and geologist alike, is variation in the gravity of the petroleum produced on neighboring leases or even from adjoining wells. Few fields in the United States yield oil that is of uniform gravity throughout; in some fields the different grades are produced from different sands, in a few from different formations, and in many from different areas in the same sand. In a few cases, perhaps, a common assumption—that the heavier oil is derived from the lighter through the escape of the more volatile constituents—is valid, but many cases can not be explained in this way. Although in the California fields the specific gravity of the oil generally decreases with depth, there are numerous exceptions to this rule; and, as in many other regions the light oil is found nearest the surface, it is evident that evaporation underground is generally an unimportant factor. It is generally recognized that the great differences between petroleum from widely separated fields are due largely to differences in age and degree of metamorphism and to variation in the composition of the original organic matter; but in the writer's opinion some of these broader differences, as well as most of the minor variations in the character of the oil from any one field, are due to the local action of natural reagents such as sulphur or oxygen. This is particularly likely to be true if the oil has migrated from one formation to another, as in the California fields; and in some arcas it appears that variation in sulphur content may even afford a rough index of the extent or distance of the migration. It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to the chemical action of sulphur and oxygen on petroleum, to show that the gravity of the oil from any one field is intimately related to its sulphur content, and to discuss the possi-

In view of the gradually decreasing known reserves of high-grade manganese ore and the rapidly increasing consumption of iron-manganese alloys in the steel industry, it is well to turn our attention to the development of low-grade manganiferous ore deposits and to the utilization of these ores in steel manufacture. The dependence of this country on imported manganese ore and ferromanganese has been forcibly brought to the attention of steel makers during the last few years by the cessation of manganese-ore imports from Russia, the restriction of manganese-ore imports from India and of ferromanganese imports from Europe. Should the importation of manganese ore from Biazil cease, the steel industry of this country would face a serious situation. The present practice of steel making requires ferromanganese in large quantities and ferromanganese of the grade used at present can be produced only from high-grade manganese ores such as the United States appears to possess only in insignificant amounts. There are in the United States, however, large reserves of manganiferous iron ore which could probably be used extensively in the steel industry if certain changes in the practice of steel manufacture were made. Thus high-grade manganese ore could be conserved. Among the most important deposits of manganiferous iron ore in this couniry are those of the Cuyuna iron-ore district of Minnesota. It is probable that in case of restriction of foreign supplies, the users of manganese in the United States would have to rely to a large extent on the Cuyuna district to make up the shortage. Steam coal quality is less stringent than metallurgical coal quality. Steam coal is prepared either by cleaning a full-size range of raw coal or cleaning coarse coal only, leaving the fine coal raw. The latter scheme is more cost competitive. It is particularly applicable to US eastern soft coal where low ash coal is concentrated in fine sizes. For raw coal size separation the Rotating Probability Screen, developed by the British Coal Board, may be used for easy change of raw coal separating size, and to avoid screen deck plugging when handling wet and clayey raw coals.

IT was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the " Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the "vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat. A little later the effect of the oxidizing action of the vadose circulation upon ore-deposits was ably and exhaustively treated by Prof. R. A. F. Penrose, in a paper on " The Superficial Alteration of Ore-Deposits "f-the only one, so far as I know, which has been exclusively devoted to this important subject. My own first detailed study of ore-deposits was made at Leadville, in 1880, at a time when almost the only minerals visible in those deposits were in oxidized forms. That this form was the result of the alteration of earlier sulphides by surface-waters had to be proved at the time by induction or analogy, the general correctness of which was, however, abundantly confirmed by subsequent developments. Thus I was early impressed with the importance of distinguishing, in the study of an ore-deposit, the alteration-products, resulting from the action of oxidizing waters descending from the present surface, from the earlier-formed sulphides; and, assuming that the latter were primary or original, I called the former secondary. INCIDENTAL to a description of the hytlrographical basin of the Quemahoning in Somerset county, Pa., as a coal-field, I have, without a personal survey of the whole county, taken the pains to collate a synopsis of' leading facts, so car as available, relating to its coal resources. This is here presented, in view of an interest in the subject, growing out of a nearly central traverse of the county, in common with the southern tier of counties of the State, west of Blue mountain, by a new trunk line of railway—the South Pennsylvania. The political east-and-west boundaries of Somerset county, Pa., following the bold topography of Allegheny mountain and Laurel hill, are in common with the east-and-west boundaries of the First Bituminous Coal-basin formed by these ridges respectively, except the southeastern townships which lie on the eastern slope of Allegheny mountain. The nearly parallel anticlinals of Negro mountain and the so-called Viaduct axis stratigraphically divide the basin into three sub-basins, which, in order from east to west, are known as follows, viz. : I. Berlin-Salisbury (Eustern) Sub-basin : Between Allegheny mountain and Negro mountain, embracing the Berlin section of Barren coal-measures, the Salisbury section of Upper Productive coal-measures, and the Meyersdale and Garrett sections of Lower Productive coal-measures. 11. Somerset (Middle) Sub-basin: Between Kegro mauntain and the Viaduct axis, so called from the viaduct on the Conemaugh river, which there crosses it; embracing the section of Lower Productive measures of Mineral Point and Casselman on Castlenlan river, and of Somerset. 111. BAUXITE, at first considered as a mineralogical curiosity without importance, now attracts daily increased attention from mineralogists, geologists, and manufacturers. The metallurgy of aluminum, which has entered with the advent of electrolysis upon a new phase within the last few years, requires every day larger quantities of pure alumina, and this can only be obtained from bauxite, which is, of known substances, the richest in free alumina. Bauxite has been mined since 1872 in France, whereabout 200,000 tons have been produced, and where, as a natural consequence, its deposits, qualities, and applications have become known. Within a few years past, discoveries of important deposits of bauxite have been made in the United States and Canada, and this almost entirely new subject has thus acquired an additional interest for the mining engineers and metallurgists of the American continent. The methods for preparing operating cost estimates for a proposed mining venture are outlined. The procedures for estimating the direct and indirect operating cost for proposed mining and ore processing facilities are reviewed. Profits from the by-products are credits to the total operating cost, direct plus indirect, and are subtracted to obtain the total net operating cost. The non-operating costs which are a part of the total expenses are defined but are not considered in this manuscript. A method for developing the operating cost for a typical copper concentrator in the southwest is described in detail.

In the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mat-tawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by lnspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica.
