Ik presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent, from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel. Physically sound steel, as I would classify it, must be free from blow-holes as well as pipe. The line of demarcation between harmless and harmful blow-holes is exceedingly difficult to define. It is certainly the better and safer practice to eliminate blow-holes from the saleable portion of the ingots and to form a well-defined shrinkage-cavity or pipe at the upper crop-end of ingot. The picturesque little mining town of Grass Valley, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at an altitude of 2500 feet, has been for 43 years the scene of uninterrupted activity and prosperity, as the center of a mining district which was intimately associated with the pioneer days of California, and the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall, in El Dorado county, in January, 1848. Although placer-mining was inaugurated in Nevada county as early as 1848, the first quartz ledge was not located until the summer of 1850. Discoveries made on Gold Hill and Massachusetts Hill increased the excitement in quartz-mining, and hastened the erection (during the same year) of the first mill operated in the State. At the close of 1864, the district had produced $23,000,000 in gold, and all the well-known properties of to-day had been discovered and worked. The Eureka-Idaho, the North Star, and the Empire mines were in active operation ; and to-day we still find them equipped with large crushing-plants, operating 80 per cent. of all the stamps in the immediate Grass Valley district. Of the mines just named, the North Star possesses the most recently constructed mill, a description of which, the writer believes, may prove of interest to members of the Institute engaged in the milling of goldores. During the year 1386, operations at the North Star mine (the property of the North Star Mining Company) had reached such a stage of development that the necessity of a crushing-plant at the mine became imperative, and early in October the erection of a 30stamp mill was in progress. The building designed to contain 40 stamps was speedily erected ; and within sixty days the large structure was under cover. The Murray Plant of the American Smelting & Refining Company is situated seven miles south of Salt Lake City, and has a fine view of the Salt Lake Valley with its fertile farms and orchards. It is located on the Los Angeles & Salt Lake and Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroads, and has a fine electric car service, cars running every 15 minutes. The beautiful and majestic Wasatch range lies about five miles to the east and the Oquirrh Range to the west, and from these mountains a large proportion of the ores treated are obtained.

The recent discoveries of important new gold-districts in limestone, granite, sandstone and porphyry have awakened the more intelligent class of prospectors to a realization of the fact that ally rock may be gold-bearing; that from the appearance of a rock it is impossible to judge whether it carries gold or not; and that gold-ores may occur in any geological formation. As a rule, the professional prospector limits his search to ores and conditions with which he is more or less familiar, and to formations which he regards as favorable to the occurrence of such ores. Hence it often happens that while the very thing he is searching for is in plain sight, he fails to recognize it, and some other individual, possibly less intelligent but more lucky, stumbles blindly upon it. Beginning with the discovery of the California placers by the finding of gold in the tail-race of Sutter's saw-mill—a tale so often told that nearly all have read it in some form—and following the discovery of district after district down to the present time, one is forcibly impressed by the fact that many of the important districts have been discovered by accident; that many such discoveries have been made by unskilled or inexperienced prospectors, and some by persons having no knowledge whatever of prospecting. Thus, the recent Klondike discoveries are said to have been made by a poor salmon-fisherman, who, with his Indian wife, was hunting, not for gold, but for good fishing-grounds; the Comstock lode is said to have been accidentally discovered, and the Ragged Top district in the Black Hills and the Pearce mine in Arizona* are recent notable instances of the same kind.

ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. Transportation cost is a key factor in both the profitability and competitiveness of coal marketing. With coal exportation growing rapidly, moisture control is important. Although in some cases, too much moisture reduction can lead to losses in transportation and pollution problems, there is normally justification for reducing moisture by mechanical means as much as possible. This paper reviews current technology of dewatering coal fines and examines the comparative capabilities of screens, filters, and centrifuges. Financial considerations are stated and implications of capital and operating costs on selection are discussed.

The discovery of rhenium on the ion exchange resin used at the uraniun in-situ leach operations at Palangana, TX, led to a laborabory study of possible recovery methods. Rhenium was present in small amounts in the ammonium carbonate leach liquors as the perrhenate anion, ReO4-. It concentrated on the anion exchange resin, which was a factor of 10 more selective for rhenium than for uranium. Various elution systems were investigated for stripping the rhenium from the columns after the uranium had been eluted with chloride or nitrate solutions. Although the per-chlorate ion was most efficient on a molar basis, nitrate ion combined the benefits of efficiency and low cost. A 3N or stronger concentration of nitrate containing up to 0. 5N H + was found to be the system of choice. A rhenium sulfide concentrate containing up to 14010 Re was obtained from these effluents by hydrogen sulfide precipitation. Preliminary experiments were run to produce rhenium metal powder by oxidation of the concentrate to NH4ReO4 followed by hydrogen reduction at elevated temperature.

A SEMI-AUTOMATIC hoist has been installed at the 2966 station of the Copper Queen mine, since neither the bulk of supplies handled nor the number of men engaged in developing the 3100 level justifies the constant attendance of two cagers and two hoist operators. The connecting service shaft between the 2966 and 3100 levels is actually a two-compartment raise. Below the 2966 level the shaft is 7x13 ft-slightly oversize to permit downcast ventilation and provide space for the 16-conductor flexible control cable. The raise extends 52 ft above the 2966 level for a 3-ft diam head sheave. Another 3-ft sheave is mounted as an idler between the hoist and head sheave, eliminating the need for an inclined cableway. The main compartment serves as a cageway; the other compartment provides a manway and space for service lines. Since vertical travel is limited, rope speed is of minor importance.

The domestic iron and steel industry is a vital and major segment of the US economy. Including its employees in coal mining, iron ore mining, limestone quarrying, and related transportation, the industry directly provides jobs for approximately 750,000 people, has a $10 billion annual payroll, and indirectly supports a substantial volume of employment for the entire country. Because of its size and visibility, if nothing else, the US iron and steel industry has always been an easy target of attack and has often been subjected to a great deal of political sound and fury. Today, the industry has different troubles and is fighting for survival: it is faced with spiralling costs, inadequate earnings, labor unrest, foreign competition, government over-regulation, an acute shortage of investment capital, and an all-time high debt burden.

During the last three decades a great many arguments have been presented on the subject of "mosaicJ' or "blockJJ structures of metals. Apparently because of insufficient evidence, the "block-structure" theories have never been widely understood among the physical metallurgists in this country, and most investigators among the few that have tried to demonstrate the existence of such an inner strutture Of crystals or grains have failed to recognize also the existence of a lamellar structure. Moreover, little thought has been given to justify the existence of such "lamellar" or "mosaic-block" structures on a theoretical basis. Since properties such as Plasticity; ferro-magnetism, hardness, diffusion, and others may be explained by structural faults in the lattice network of the crystals: the great importance of a more detailed knowledge of the structure within crystals or grains becomes now evident. Because Of the vast extent of the field Of submicroscopic structures, it shall be the purpose Of this paper only to review the more important of the results obtained by other investigators, especially in Germany, where a great deal of attention has been given to mosaic structure during the last three years. The origin of this mosaic patternt and effects of cold reduction and recrystallization will be shown in further studies later on. Imperfections in Crystals The many terms used in the literature to denote structural types of crystals are often not clearly defined. To clear up some of the confusion, the meaning of the more important terms will be given here. ideal, or perfect without any structural imperfections are called "ideal crystals,,or ''Perfect'' crystals,n meaning a Homogeneous interior structure of atoms, ions or molecules, as the case may be. In other words, at every point in the interior of the crystal exactly the same orientation of the crystallographic axes of the coordinate system would exist. The Surface of such a body, if etched with an appropriate etching reagent, would reflect light with perfect uniformity. Crystals of this type are almost nonexistent. Real Crystals.—L'Real crystals"' may contain various types of structural defects, which can be classified into: (I) lineage structure, (2) mosaic-block structure, (3) lamellar structure. The inhomogeneities many,in these groups mean that the orientation of the crystallographic aies will not be the same at every point within the interior of a crystal (or grain of a poly crystalline body). 'Perjecl Real Crystals.—The term "perfect real crystals " is generally used to describe crystals with minute structural or thermo-dynamical inhomogeneities. The former

PRIOR to the World War most of the barite used in the United States for manufacturing lithopone and barium chemicals was imported. Germany, by virtue of an abundance of high-grade ore and low labor costs, was in a position to dominate the world market. With the cessa-tion of imports and with the war demand for barium chemicals, the barium chemical industry and the mining of barite became well estab-lished in the United States. This industry has continued to expand because of the increasing use of lithopone. In 1914 the sales of domestic crude barite was 52,919 tons and in 1934 it was 209,850 tons. Barite deposits of economic importance occur in at least 20 states, but the principal producers in 1934 were Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, California and Arizona. The main mining centers are located near the crude barite markets of the three principal marketing districts-the Pacific Coast, the Midwestern area, and the Eastern area. The Pacific Coast is supplied entirely by California, Nevada, and Arizona. The Midwestern area uses most of the Missouri crude and a small amount from the southern states. The eastern market is the chief competitive area. Practically all of the imported crude is marketed there; also the bulk of the southern crude and ground barite. In addition, this area absorbs a small part of the Missouri crude and 80 per cent of the ground barite. Besides the advantage of low delivered costs and purity of product, the imported barite has commanded a price differential because it is soft rather than hard, like many of the domestic ores. The inherent physical properties of the southern ores remain, but the purity can be controlled to a great extent by beneficiation. Simple washing or gravity concentra-tion has sufficed in the past, but in many cases a more efficient process now becomes imperative to remove impurities not amenable to these methods. Certain deposits now being opened are of lower grade and require more precise milling conditions. In some ores, the kind of impurities has changed as the mining advanced.

Like every present-day manufacturer, the brass foundryman is faced with the necessity of reducing the cost of his finished product without impairing its appearance or quality. He must use every economy that the progress of art and science puts at his disposal and should also be alert to profit by any peculiarity in his own situation or the nature of his product that may give him an exceptional advantage. Much can be accomplished by the adoption of labor-saving equipment and improved methods of melting, molding and handling. Control of pouring temperature, study of defective castings and their causes, laboratory control of molding sand and core mixtures, the use of less expensive alloys, all contribute to the desired end. Assuming that the composition of the alloy is already as inexpensive as the character of the casting will permit, still further savings can be made by the intelligent purchase and utilization of the metals needed to produce the desired analysis. Functions of Secondary and Virgin Metals in Casting Brass It is no longer a general assumption among foundrymen that quality castings must be made from an "all virgin" mix. If suitable secondary metals can be obtained more cheaply it is wasteful to use any larger proportion of virgin metal than is required to produce castings of the desired properties. To follow such a course, however, imposes upon the foundryman a heavier obligation than was formerly the case, to make sure by test and inspection that his castings really are of the desired quality. So long as he used the most expensive grades of metal and his melting practice was reasonably correct he was not obliged to give much thought to the quality of the metal in the castings. If he is to use secondary metals he must, in order to retain the confidence of his customer, examine these metals very carefully before use, exercise scrupulous control over his melting and pouring conditions and examine his castings closely.
