This paper is the result of a study, in 1919, to determine how much surplus power could be produced through the proper utilization of the entire gas flow from the two furnace stacks at the Federal Furnace Plant, South Chicago, 111. Obviously, the problem was to measure the flow of gas through the main beyond the point where the amount necessary for stove operation mas rermoved. In all probability, blast-furnace gas is the most difficult gas to measure, because of the high moisture and dust content, and the widely fluctuating flow from the furnaces. This wide fluctuation of flow forbids the acceptance of any one group of flow road-ings as indicative of normal operating conditions. A study of the conditions showed that a recording device on gas flow was necessary. As the gas at the point of measurement had passed through met washers, and accordingly was saturated with water and contained considerable dust carried past the scrubbers in the form of sludge, no form of Pitot tube could be used, for this sludge would quickly plug the dynamic. and static holes, spoiling the gage readings. An even more serious objection to the use of Pitot tubes was the impossibility of accurately measuring the cross-sectional area of the gas main on the plane of Pitot-tube installation. Given an absolutely clean gas and a perfectly circular pipe, it would be safe to assume, through measurements of the pipe diameter, that the gas main was of a certain cross-sectional area. But the continual depositing of sludge and the fact that the main mas fabricated from riveted sheets led us to discard the idea of using Pitot tubes for. this service. The Venturi tube mas then considered, and had there been a sufficiently long straight run of gas main to accommodate a tube of the required size (72 by 28 in.) such an installation would very likely have been made. While a country is small and its coal fields are not many, it may be possible to classify its coals on some basis that avoids both overlap and inconsistency, and that may be satisfactory to the particular country, such as geographic distribution or geologic age, or regional uses. In the adjoining country, however, the coals may differ more or less; broad areas may have escaped the erasure of transition zones by erosion, and the stages of alteration of the coals may lead to a classification different from and even incompatible with that of the other country. Such classifications, developed primarily along national lines, are essentially opportunistic. Further, many even of the "use" terms that have been in more common employment with a degree of international application have lost their significance and value, due to changes in industrial methods and urban life. When the number of coal fields is large and the classification is designed to cover the coals of many countries, the groups or divisions into which the coals are integrated are found to verge one into another; and, though the main divisions may be so naturally composed and oriented that they are relatively distinct and readily separated as entities or units when taken by themselves, the sequence, through classes, groups, and subdivisions, is so complete that we find transition zones through which boundaries must be arbitrarily drawn with minute technical definition. This situation, which is conspicuously illustrated in the United States, is due to the progressive evolution of all coals, irrespective of geologic age, from peats to successively higher ranks, which, if the progressive alteration goes far enough, ends with graphite. This evolution is now firmly established and its complete acceptance is but a matter of time. A classification of all coals in all coal fields can not escape this fact and must take into account all the stages in the transformation of the fuel from rank to rank through division to division, and through group to group. The plan here outlined aims at a natural classification of coals based on their evolution from peats to graphite. As in other classifications, the differentiation of the various groups and divisions takes account of changes resulting from the progressive losses of moisture and .of oxygen of constitution; the relative conservation of carbon; the progressive increase in fixed carbon (inverse to the loss of volatile matter) in

Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of the distribution of nodules on the seafloor and the location of economically important areas, but less effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is, in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are related indirectly, and possibly directly, to the activities of organisms.

In a year fraught with difficulties, especially to small operators, the more stable mining organizations have shown a dynamic readiness to plunge ahead in the development of new mines, new and ingenious equipment and new tools for management to take the guesswork out of important decisions. New Mining Equipment The mining equipment display at the American Mining Congress in San Francisco demonstrated some rather radical new design concepts and a new willingness to use imagination to come up with ingenious new applications and adaptations of standard equipment.

With returning prosperous conditions in all industries, oil-refinery engineering has found opportunity for the more extensive application of improvements developed during the several years of depression. The year has brought out little of an entirely new nature, but much in wider application of previous worth-while developments. The greatest volume of work done has been in modernizing the distillation and cracking units of existing refineries, particularly by substitution of combination skimming and cracking units for older equipment, and the installation of cracking plants in smaller refineries where formerly only skimming was practiced. A number of entirely new refineries were installed during the year, two of the most important being the 20,000-bbl. refinery by the Atlantic Refining Co., at Atreco, Tex., and a 12,000-bbl. plant by the Wilshire Oil Co., at Norwalk, Calif., these two embodying some of the latest developments in cracking and treating. Total refining capacity for the United States is now reported as being something over 4,000,000 bbl. per day, but a movement is on foot looking to a complete revision of these figures, as experience has indicated not only some overstatement of capacity of equipment but that considerable equipment is included which because of obsolescence and location will probably never be run again. The 3,000,000-bbl. figure which the industry reached during the year's high consuming period required the operation of probably 95 per cent of the country's efficiently usable capacity. Cracking and Polymerization There were no new outstanding developments in the cracking field, progress being made largely in the further refinement of known principles. Improvements in furnace design and operation have been largely in permitting closer control of the heating curve through the cracking-tube system, assisting in more uniform yield and in the lessening of coke deposition, and permitting longer trouble-free operating time as well as reduction in furnace-maintenance cost. Actual operating polymerization capacity has been increased little during the year, but a number of projects have been started, some nearing completion, the production from which will be available during 1937.

DURING the past decade, considerable work has been carried out on various cermet systems in an effort to produce materials suitable for high-temperature applications in gas turbines. Most of the materials have not, as yet, met the requirements of the engine manufacturers, primarily because of their lack of room-temperature ductility and thermal shock resistance. In the field of tool materials, however, although ductility is still of prime importance, much has been accomplished by improving design parameters and the quality of carbide materials with a view to using cermet compositions successfully. The systems described in this paper were designed primarily for application in this field, although their development was a natural outcome of work on similar compositions designed for high-temperature service. In steel-bonded titanium carbide, the steel binder imparts heat treatability to the system while the carbide provides abrasion and wear resistance. Combining the carbide and the steel matrix in carefully controlled proportions results in a composite material which, when the steel is hardened, has man of the properties of cemented tungsten carbide. In the annealed condition, this material can be readily machined by the conventional chip-removal techniques. Titanium carbide has certain distinct advantages over many of the other carbides when combined with a steel matrix. It is among the hardest of the carbides and is one of the most stable. Liquid iron wets titanium carbide, and this wetting assists in the formation of a dense cermet. Once the composite structure has been formed, the titanium carbide acts as a relatively inert phase during the heat treatment of the matrix. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The steel-bonded titanium-carbide materials described in this paper were prepared by the liquid-phase sintering technique. The titanium carbide used had an average particle size of 6 to 7 p, a total carbon content of 19.4 pct and 0.35 pct free carbon. This was blended with the elemental metal powders by ball milling them together in a hexane medium. After drying, paraffin wax was added to the blend to provide green strength in the pressed briquettes, and compacting was performed at 15 tsi. Liquid-phase sintering was carried out in vacuum at temperatures which depended on the chemical composition of the system involved, but which were usually around 2640° F. The resultant materials had a density approaching 100 pct of theoretical. The

UNTIL recently all discussions directed at justify-ing the use of mechanical-loading equipment and conveyors have referred chiefly to tons per man and cost per ton. But there is another consideration that ? will speed the adoption of mechanical loading in mines even though tons per man on present day stand-ards were not increased nor the cost per ton decreased. With restricted immigration, improved facilities for education in our mining communities, and increased opportunities for recreation, the type of man who can or will throw 20 tons of coal per day over the side of a mine car is disappearing. Whether we will it or not provision must be made to replace muscular effort by mechanical means. Fortunately, indications are that the process will be accompanied by increased output per man and lower production cost, and though the outlook may now be a bit clouded in spots, all should profit by the change. The operator should enjoy a more stable business with more assured profit, the miners should get a better livelihood with less arduous effort and under safer and pleasanter working conditions, and the consumer should gain the assurance of a supply of coal always available at reasonable prices. That sounds like the millennium in the coal business perhaps. Of course, it is not, but there is just enough of that millennium stuff in it to encourage those of us who are working with today's problems of applying loading and conveying equipment to underground opera-tions. If we discern clearly that there can be no back-sliding, and that all will share in whatever advantages accrue, we will carry on more vigorously, and may right-fully expect to have the necessary cooperation of all the elements within the industry. As nature does not seem to have followed a definite plan in the formation of coal deposits it is not likely that any one standard method or type of equipment can be evolved for mining the coal. The method of mining that maybe most advantageously employed with load-ing machines and conveyors depends on the character of the strata overlying the coal as much as anything else.

In classification of pulps bearing magnetized ferro-magnetic particles, depolarizing is of great importance. If size separation is to be effective, particles must be individual rather than in flocs. Depolarizing is also practiced in heavy medium separations in which ferrosilicon or magnetite is the medium. When particles of ferromagnetic material have been removed from a magnetic field, residual magnetism causes agglomeration. The term depolarizing refers to the operation of reducing or eliminating this residual magnetism and may thus be considered magnetic deflocculation. The terms demagnetizing and randomizing are also used.

The Mine Accident, Injury, Illness and Employment Database at the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Health and Safety Analysis Center is a computerized system that stores accident, injury, illness and employment data about all coal and metal/nonmetal mines in the United States. The paper discusses the system for collecting, storing, analyzing, and reporting this information and how these data are used in the ongoing effort to increase the health and safety in this nation's mines.

A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. General Considerations There are numerous factors which appear directly or indirectly to affect the overall performance of bituminous coal underfeed stokers, such as the caking or matting properties of the coal, the contact relationships between coal and air, the ash fusion characteristics, the burning rate, and the design of the stoker and furnace in which the coal is burned. Bethlehem Steel Co. has just brought an all-new iron ore mine into production at Marmora, Canada, about 120 miles east of Toronto. High grade pellets produced at the mine from open-pit magnetite ore travel 64 miles by rail to the port at Picton, then go by Lake boat to help supply Bethlehem's Lackawanna, N. Y., plant. At full production about half a million tons of pellets a year will be shipped, and mining will be at a scale of more than a million tons per year of ore. Aeromagnetic surveys carried out in 1949 by the Ontario Dept. of Mines and the Canadian Geological Survey revealed an anomaly that interested Bethlehem geologists. By 1951 the company had put down some 40 diamond drillholes ranging from 460 to 1800 ft to block out the magnetite replacement deposit which lies in pre-Cambrian limestone below about 130 ft of Paleozoic limestone. The orebody, roughly 2100 ft long and up to 400 ft wide, averages about 37 pct iron, too low for direct shipment. It has always seemed to me that there is a certain similarity between the work of the mining engineer and that of the doctor of medicine — each has very often to be governed in his actions by conditions which he cannot see. It is not necessary to detail the unseen conditions with which the mining engineer or geologist has to deal—the further extension of ore-bodies, the existence of new ones, the throw of a fault, the probable change in grade' or character of the ore with advance of the workings, are a few of the conditions which the mining engineer has to determine as well as he can from the deductions he is able to make from what he can observe. Just so the physician is often confronted with conditions that he can not observe. Probably less than half of human ills make a manifestation at the surface of the body from which definite and certain conclusions can be drawn. The diagnostician must observe various things and, from these observations in combination, conclude what his course should he to bring about the cure of the trouble. Both professions would be assisted immensely by any agency that would permit them to look below the surface, something that would make more certain the diagnosis which each is called upon to make. The physician has had such an agency since 1895, when Röntgen discovered the X-ray; which, by making possible shadowgraphs of the osseous portion of the human body, advanced immensely the diagnosis of bone lesions Later, with improvement in the technique and more understanding in the interpretation of what the photographic plate shows, other portions of the human anatomy could be examined and at the present time there is hardly an instance of internal disorder to which the aid of the X-ray is not called. Some organs are made opaque by administering mineral substances; in other cases, conclusions are drawn from barely perceptible shadows on the photographic plate. Generally the surgeon's knife is directcd with exactitude to the seat of the trouble and so not only is the difficulty revealed but the necessity for an exploratory operation is averted. THE Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties situated at 29 West 39th Street in New York City United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr Carnegie made his gift, "for the erection of a suitable union home" for the engineering societies, United Engineering Trustees, Inc (then United Engineering Society) was chartered under Chapter 703, Laws of the State of New York, 1904, for "the advancement of the engineering arts and sciences in all their branches, and to maintain a free public engineering library" The Corporation was further empowered to acquire real and personal property and to use, maintain and occupy it, with the provision that any building erected by the Corporation shall be used perpetually as a meeting place and headquarters for the Founder Societies Thus the Carnegie gift realized the ideal of bringing the engineering societies together under one roof, and the Corporation through its members nominated in equal numbers by the four Founder Societies had the necessary authority to act for the Founder Societies in their joint interests in owning and operating for them not only Engineering Societies Building, but in the course of time, Engineering Societies Library, and

During 1980-2000, the Florida phosphate industry will deplete its central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the so-called southern Florida reserve areas. These mines will require new mining, beneficiation, and tailings disposal technologies since southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the central Florida deposits. Furthermore, government regulations will necessitate development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the Phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

The design of storage space or deep mining in rock salt should take into account not only time dependency of the rock salt behavior but also temperature effects. For deep mining of potassium salt the natural increase of temperature with depth may no longer be negligible. For the storage of cryogenic liquid gas in salt caverns more knowledge is nezded about the propagation of deep temperatures and their effects on the stress-strain-creep behavior of the surrounding salt. High temperature problems arise for nuclear waste storages in caverns or drill holes emitting radiation. A numerical model is proposed for the analysis of displacements and stresses including their time and temperature induced change. For the material behavior of salt constitutive equations are chosen composed of a combination of Hooke-Kelvin-Bingham-Newton-model based on experimental results (excluding at present deep cooling), Langer 1980. The parameters involved are depending on the stress level and the temperature. The finite-element-method is applied to rotationally symmetrical three-dimensional problems. The non-linear calculation method is based on an implicit method with respect to time. A modified Newton-Raphson-method and the initial strain approach are employed. Along with some experiences on suitable numerical procedures, examples are shown for the characteristical effects of time-temperature dependency. Having achieved convergency and reliability a method is now available for practical design and parametric sensibility studies.

TRINIDAD, which has never been. seriously consid-ered as a large oil producer, has recently taken a new lease on its oil life through active development work being carried on by a newly organized American company that has been conspicuously successful in the short time in which it has operated on the island. From an oil operator's point of view Trinidad pos-sesses numerous natural advantages which are not found in any other oil producing country. The climate, while tropical, is healthy. The nights are always cool. Deep-water shipping ports in protected waters are available within short pipe-line distance from the pro-ducing fields. The distance from Trinidad to the At-lantic seaboard of the United States is less than from the Gulf Coast or from Mexico. The labor supply is abundant and can be had at reasonable rates. The island enjoys a good, stable government under British rule and is traversed by a net-work of excellent govern-ment roads. From a production standpoint the fields being de-veloped by Trinidad Oil Fields, Inc., the company re-ferred to above, present interesting problems which are being successfully solved. The oil sands are extremely fine; some of them having over 50 per cent passing 100- mesh screen and, with the exception of the Palo Seco field, the sands are loose, with shale-breaks and shale capping and with rock pressures running up to 600 lb. per square inch. Rotary drilling is universal, as the formations encountered are soft Tertiary shales, clays, sandy shales and sands, with occasional sandstone and lime shells, which are easily drilled with the rotary. As high as 600 ft. of hole in 24 hr. has been made in some of this company's wells. Production is at present obtained at depths ranging from 500 to 2500 ft. but further development will probably result in deeper pro-duction being obtained. The oil being produced ranges from 21 deg. to 37 deg. Bé gravity and is all asphaltic base oil.
