In the hydrometallurgical circuit, many phase separation steps are usually necessary. Typical steps are pregnant liquor - leach residue separation by counter- current decantation or continuous vacuum filtration, clarification of liquids prior to precipitation, ion exchange or solvent extraction, dewatering of final product, etc. The paper discusses the more recent advances in these areas and considers general operating parameters and cost factors. In addition, emphasis is placed on future needs because of the growing importance and necessity of hydrometallurgical processing of minerals.

INTRODUCTION Over the world, and especially in the United States, there is increasing dependence upon progressively lower grade ore deposits. These lower grade ores are frequently difficult or impossible to process due to complex mineral assemblages being very finely disseminated. Thus, many of the conventional mineral concentration methods are not applicable to these ores. For the last few decades, research in the more exotic mineral processing techniques has been conducted, both in universities and in governmental and industrial laboratories. Since its inception, the Institute of Mineral Research of Michigan Technological University (MTU) has devoted much of its attention to the problems of processing refractory, low grade ores. Recently a new flotation system was developed which shows promise of being applicable to a broad range of ore types. This process has been the subject of two allowed patent applications. This paper describes the details of such a flotation system which is potentially useful for treating ultrafine minerals. Some highlights of the testing program on a variety of iron ores and a group of lithium-bearing ores will be presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Both iron and lithium ore flotation treatments followed the same general procedures, with minor differences in pH and in reagent dosages. The method is rather simple, efficient and economical from the standpoint of recovery and the cost of reagents consumed.

Mining geophysics in 1967 continued to expand with greater application in the exploration and development of mineral deposits. Moreover, geophysical activity increased without the particular emphasis of a Pine Point or Timmins discovery to spur interest. This trend is expected to continue through 1968 as geophysics more and more becomes an integral part of a mineral exploration program. This past year saw the "little black box" of the old-fashioned "doodlebugger" pushed further into the background, replaced by increasingly sensitive equipment of sophisticated design. The trend also is away from the one man geophysical operation wherein the same individual is responsible for the development, design and operation of the field gear, the planning and execution of a survey and analyzing and interpreting the data. In today's technology a staff of specialists, electronics engineers, mathematicians, physicists-to name but a few- are required to back up the exploration geophysicist in the development of new methods and techniques, in the reduction of the voluminous amount of field data and in the interpretation of the anomalies which can be enhanced by various high-speed computer techniques. Obviously a full back-up staff of these varied abilities is impractical to most exploration companies. However, the equivalent function is provided to the lone staff geophysicist by the many competent geophysical contractors and individual consultants.

Some of the advantages of the inductive method of electrical prospecting were emphasized in a paper by Dr. Max Mason. Since this emphasis was misunderstood by some to indicate a too exclusive interest in inductive methods, we are especially happy to help correct this impression by reporting on some of our work on surface potential methods. Earth Currents and Surface Potentials When two electrodes, A and B, are placed on the surface of the ground a distance d apart, and a 100-volt battery is connected across the elec- trodes, current flows from the positive electrode A to the negative electrode B. The current does not pass directly from A to B along the straight line joining these two points. In fact, a negligible amount of the total current chooses this direct path, and the flow actually takes place

E. A. HOLBROOK,*Urbana, Ill.-To those who have followed the development of powdered coal two questions often occur. First, as to the moisture in the coal. In Illinois we recognize that the bituminous coals contain about 12 to 15 per cent. of what we call "contained moisture," that is, the moisture is present in the coal although this may appear absolutely dry and dusty. In addition, the surface moisture may be present in any amount. I would like to ask what is the relative effect of these two forms of moisture upon the work of pulverizing. Does Mr. Collins refer to the contained moisture or to the surface moisture in estimating the degree to which the coal must be dried? H. R. COLLINS.-In the lignite coals, of which this country possesses a great deal and is beginning to develop them to considerable extent, the "contained" or "combined" moisture does not .trouble us; we have no difficulty in reducing lignites to a high degree of fineness. But when dealing with bituminous, sub-bituminous, or semi-bituminous, we, prefer to reduce the combined moisture as well as the hydroscopic moisture as far as possible. We have recently put into operation, at a plant, furnaces and boilers consuming the lignite from northern New Mexico, which contains between 4 and 5 per cent. moisture as we pulverize and burn it. The evaporating efficiencies under the boilers have been so remarkable that we wish to check the results half a dozen times before quoting them. We have also just started two boilers at the Garfield smelter, and have obtained the same high efficiencies.

AS A whole, engineering schools have not awakened A to the fact that the workmen compensation laws passed in most of our states between 1914 and 1917 effected a quiet but none the less real revolution in. the relations between labor and management; no longer are industrial accidents unfortunate or careless happenings over which we feel a humanitarian interest and sorrow, they are a cost of the process and the finished product, as vital as improved design and increased efficiency. Last year the writer and others made a committee report to. the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on the cost of accidents in the coal industry of Pennsylvania. Comparatively the accident record in Pennsylvania coal industry is not high, yet the direct compensation cost plus the interference with operation cost of accidents was over 5 per cent. of the total cost of producing the coal. This stands out more vividly -if you realize that about 70 per cent. of the' cost of producing the coal is for payment of labor, wages that are fixed and over which engineering efficiency and management skill have little or no direct effect. This leaves 30 per cent. of the cost chargeable .to hoisting, haulage, overhead 'and other items subject to engineering control. One sixth of this is due to cost of accidents. Surely a direct place 'for an engineering attack.

DISCOVERY of a commercial ore deposit has resulted from a program emphasizing geophysical techniques and concentrating upon exploration of alluvial-covered areas. United Geophysical Co. selected these areas as offering the best possibility of success, for here the surface evidence of ore deposits has been hidden from the eyes of prospector and geologist alike. Pima mining district, Pima County, Arizona, was selected for initial exploration. The project was successful in that a commercial ore deposit was discovered and proved through drilling and extensive underground development.

One of the most prominent features of our present-day industrial development is the ever-increasing demand put upon materials of construction. Engineering ingenuity, within the past 25 years, has been unusually active, and in some fields at least engineers frankly say that engineering design has progressed as far as the limitations imposed by the properties of the present materials of construction will permit. Consequently, they are today demanding improvement in their working materials and seeking new ones, through the aid of which the present limitations of design may be overcome. The activity of this search is evident in all fields, but it is particularly so in that of structural materials required to be resistant to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of metals and alloys is never absolute and all-inclusive; a particular alloy will withstand some corrosive conditions well and fail utterly under others. Furthermore, other properties, physical and mechanical, required in conjunction with corrosion resistance vary considerably for different commercial applications. One wants a soft, ductile sheet metal resistant to atmospheric corrosion; another, a high-strength alloy resistant to sulfuric acid. The last decade has witnessed active and definite progress in the development of high-strength, corrosion-resisting alloys. In June, 1924, a symposium by the American Society for Testing Materials, on Corrosion-resistant, Heat-resistant and Electrical-resistance Alloys, disclosed no less than 60 commercial alloys the properties of which were described as being suitable for industrial service where corrosion resistance was a feature. Today the number of these alloys has been doubled, at least. In addition, economy in design and construction through decreased weight has given considerable impetus to the improvement of alloys of which the mechanical propprties may be improved by heat-treatment.

THE discussion of production control at the Insti-tute's annual meeting was profitable in that it started some thinking. One pertinent question there raised was how the opening of new mines, whose now unneeded output would inevitably react on prices, could be postponed until the market was ready to ab-sorb their output. In transportation some restraint is being exercised on building new and unneeded fa-cilities, but in production no general solution of the problem has been offered. Yet in a special field of new development of increasing importance a quick and easy solution has been suggested. I refer to the leasing of mineral deposits on the public domain. The report of the United States Coal Commission says: "In its possession of approximately 60,000,000 acres of public coal lands the Federal Government has its own responsibility in restraining overdevelopment. The Department of the Interior, which has control of these lands under the leasing law, construes the law as giving the department no discretionary right to refuse applications for leases regularly made by qualified citizens or corporations for coal deposits on the pub-lic domain. It presumes, that the applicant believes there is a need for an additional coal mine in his local-ity and expects to find a market for the coal produced. Overdevelopment, however, is a fact in the West as well as in the East, and wherever present involves needless investment and excessive costs of operation. Plainly, the leasing law should be so amended as to give the executive department full discretion in its approval of the opening of a new coal mine on the, public domain, making that approval contingent on the showing that the new mine would serve the in-terest of the consuming public." A similar view of the Federal Government's re-sponsibility in restraining overdevelopment of its oil lands has been presented by the Federal Oil Conser-vation Board. The leasing law vests little or no dis-cretion in the Secretary of the Interior, who must grant a lease to a qualified applicant regardless of any obvious country-wide condition of surplus produc-tion. This wide-open invitation to exploit and dissi-pate the people's own oil resources could be restricted by simple legislation, although as remarked by the board, such a legislative remedy for a plain economic ailment "does not evoke popular support when its purpose is avowedly to put the brakes on development of natural resources."

In continuation of the geological work begun in Sonora, Mexico, a partial account of which has already been given in the Transactions of the Institute,* a similar reconnaissance was made of Cochise county, Arizona, and a part of the Whetstone mountains. The investigation resulted in the identification of beds of similar age and character to those of the Sonora region, and in the discovery of interesting deposits, which, so far as I call ascertain from the literature at my command, have not been described heretofore. Route.—Starting from Nogales, we followed the railroad to Crittenden, and then drove to the southeastern slope of the Whetstones. After a brief examination of some reported coalbeds we continued our route, following the wagon-road between the Whetstones and the Mustang mountains to Huachuca, and eastward to Tombstone. Crossing the Dragoon mountains at South Pass, we traveled south and west by way of Turquoise and Antelope Spring into the road from Tombstone to Bisbee. Our route over the Mule mountains lay through Mule Pass and Bisbee, where we stopped a day or two. Thence, crossing Sulphur Spring valley, we drove around the southern end of the Swisshelms, and N. through the valley between these mountains and the Chiricahuas, to White river. From that point our way led through Rucker canon into the San Simon valley, then northward along the eastern face of the Chiricahuas, and by way of Fort Bowie to Willcox, Arizona, from which place we returned to Nogales. IT is customary to make an alloy of copper in the same way, not to increase its quantity as with gold or silver, but to corrupt it for the art of casting and to destroy a certain natural viscosity in it. For this result it is accompanied by tin and also, sometimes, brass. But its proper and true alloy is fine tin, except, however, when you wish to make hammered works. For these, copper must be pure and without any trace [of impurity], otherwise it cannot be hammered thin, gilded in the fire, drawn into a wire, or made into vessels for use as is customary; but in casting, tin is almost essential. When you come to this association, just as it changes nature and appearance according to the proportion of tin which you give it, so it changes name and is no longer called copper but bronze, or, for a greater distinction of the quantity of tin for every hundred or more of copper, it is called by skilled workmen metal of more or less fineness as it contains more or less tin. This is recognized by the whiteness and brittleness: changing from red, which is the color of copper, it becomes white; from soft and flexible it becomes hard and brittle as glass. This admixture removes it so far from its original nature that one who does not know that it is a compound material believes it to be one of the number of metals engendered by Nature. Now, so that you may understand well, I tell you that various kinds of this are made, all according to the proportions of the quantities and according to the kind of work. For one kind of bronze is desired by those who make statues; this is not desired by those who make artillery or by those who make bells, mortars, basins, and similar cast objects. Now in order to alloy it into the species of bronze, eight, nine, ten, up to twelve pounds of tin are put with every hundred pounds of copper. Those who want it to make bells put twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six, depending on the tone, on whether they are large or small in form, and on whether they wish to make the tone deep or sharp and clear. HISTORICAL SKETCH THE selective action of oils for lustrous minerals was first disclosed by Haynes in 1860. In 1885, Miss Carrie Everson elaborated this idea and also disclosed the fact that acid increased the. so-called selective action. Her patent called for oils, either animal, vegetable or mineral, also for an acid or salt. The process was tried out on a practical scale in Baker City and Leadville, in 1889, and failed: first, because,, as has since been shown, of the unsuitability of the ore to flotation; and second, because the invention was too far in advance of the times. Then followed the Elmore brothers, first with their bulk oil processes and later with their vacuum method. The basic principles of oil flotation were undoubtedly covered by the above inventors, the work done since their time being merely a building up on ground work laid by them. Different kinds of oil, different quantities of oil, and all the varying degrees of agitation, were all exemplified and practiced by them in one phase or another, and the developments that have since been made are but elaborations of the fundamental principles laid down by Haynes, Everson, and the Elmore brothers. In 1902, the Potter-Delprat process was developed in Australia. In this process no oil was used, the mineral being raised by the generation of gas, brought about by the introduction of acid into the pulp. The mineral particles appeared on the surface of the separatory vessel, in the form of a scum or froth, buoyed up-by minute gas bubbles attached to them. This no doubt first gave the suggestion of gaseous flotation. In 1902, also, Fromont, an Italian, was granted a patent in which. he combined violent agitation with oil and gaseous flotation, the gas being generated within the pulp, in much the same way as in the Potter-Delprat process.

Field testing was conducted at the Strassa Iron Ore Processing Plant to evaluate high-gradient magnetic recovery of iron from the plant's tailings. The installation is the first commercial application of the Sala Continuous High-Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) Model 480 Carousel. The objectives of the five-month testing program included optimization of the operating parameters using SSDEVOP techniques to maximize iron recovery, along with establishing a long-term operating history for the SALA 480 HGMS Carousel. The effectiveness of the optimization procedure, the net benefit in term of iron recovery, and equipment performance are discussed in the paper.

AT Fresnillo a series of veins that has yielded very large quantities of silver and other metals has been developed over a length of 6500 ft. and to a depth of over 3000 ft. In the course of this work striking changes in the mineralogy and metal content of the principal veins have been disclosed and are well illustrated by assay data and ore reserve calculations. This paper describes those changes and suggests their bearing on theories of ore deposition. LOCATION The Fresnillo mines and the adjacent city of Fresnillo are in the central part of the state of Zacatecas, 35 miles northwest of the capitol city of Zacatecas, once a great silver-mining center whose total production is said to place it fourth in the world. Another famous old silver district, Sombrerete, lies northwest of Fresnillo. Fresnillo is connected by a 5-mile branch with Fresnillo station on the Mexican National Railways line from Juarez to Mexico City. Lying near the southwestern edge of the central plateau of Mexico, Fresnillo ís surrounded by a semi-arid rolling plain from which rise widely scattered low hills. One of these is Proaño hill, an inconspicuous elevation rising barely 300 ft. above the plain, but in and around Proano hill are the Fresnillo mines, and it is marked now by a great gash cut by glory-hole mining. HISTORY According to an account written in 1834 by Francisco García, then Governor of the state of Zacatecas, Fresnillo was discovered in 1554, and a presidio was established there in 1568 to protect travelers on the road between Zacatecas and Sombrerete. Little is known of the earliest mining at Fresnillo, which seemingly began soon after its discovery, but by piecing together various accounts, it appears that mines there were working in 1717 and were notably active ín 1751 under an administrator named Murguía, who left detailed notes describing them. In 1757, however, the mines became inactive because of difficulties with creditors and no doubt also because of increasing water troubles, and they remained abandoned until 1830. In 1830 the mines at Fresníllo became the property of the State of Zacatecas because the interest of Governor García had been aroused by the long disregarded notes of Murguía. Under García's energetic leadership the mines were reopened, and silver production began in 1832 ín spite of serious difficulties, including abnormal rains and an epidemic of cholera. In 1835 English capital was sought to allow installation of steam-driven Cornish pumps at the two principal shafts and to build the great hacienda de beneficio (the present Proaño hacienda). The company formed in 11835 (Cia. Zacatecano Mexicana) operated successfully until 1872, when its career was brought to an end by the political and economic disturbances

Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original prop¬erty of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direc¬tion of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratifica¬tion, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratifica¬tion but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

EFFECTIVE use of rotary kiln waste gases to preheat dry pulverized materials has been demonstrated in full-scale operation at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, Evansville, Pa. Pulverized raw materials are preheated in suspension in the gas stream in a multi-stage counterflow process which draws the gases through a series of cyclone collectors. Upon entering the first cyclone stage the material, continuously delivered and suspended in the gas stream, is successively collected and resuspended until it discharges through the kiln feed pipe. Gas and material contact time is thus prolonged, providing a high degree of heat recuperation with a very low temperature differential between gas and material at the final stage. The suspension preheater, developed by Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of Cologne, Germany, was first installed at the Norddeutsche Huette plant, Oslebshausen, Germany. Similar preheaters are now in operation at three other German cement plants. The first American installation, at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, was designed and manufactured by Fuller Co. of Catasauqua, Pa., Humboldt's licensee for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
