In the course of an examination of some of the California hydraulic mines in November last, I visited the property of the Gold Run Ditch and Mining Company, near Dutch Flat, Placer County. This is one of the most important and extensively worked mines in the district. The gold occurs in the characteristic blue gravel, which averages 175 feet in thickness, the lower 40-60 feet being made rip of cement gravel, which resists the action of water, and can only he loosened by blasting. The specimen which I have the pleasure of laying before the members was presented to me by Mr. I. L. Gould, the intelligent superintendent of the mines, who informs me that he found it in the old river channel, about twelve feet above the bedrock. The flattened water-worn nugget of gold, about the size of a kidney-bean, is imbedded in blue cement gravel, around which quartz has crystallized. When found the projecting portion of the nugget was enveloped in quartz, the core of gravel and gold having only been discovered after breaking the lump of quartz. On the quartz there is a shell of cement. The specimen is a remarkable confirmation of the theory of the deposition of quartz from solution. DISCUSSION. Dr. T. During the two years that the Henderson plant has been in operation, a number of technical improvements have been made by the staff of Basic Magnesium, Inc., the effects of which were realized subsequent to the writing of the paper by Major C. J. P. Ball (p. 28j, this volume). Pellet Mix The process as originally installed required the use of peat moss in the mixture going to the chlorinators. This had to be imported from Canada at a considerable cost, and, besides being expensive, constituted a serious fire hazard in the dry climate of Nevada. Experimentation looking toward its elimination had been going on for some time and was actively pushed as soon as operations commenced. It was found that a pellet mix containing no peat, which would chlorinate at a satisfactory rate, could be cast as a fluid slurry, which would set up into a hard mass having the desired porosity. For carrying out this operation, equipment similar to that used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer at Anaconda, Mont., was installed and proved eminently successful. The dry materials, with peat moss and raw concentrates entirely eliminated, are mixed with magnesium chloride solution in two Pratt phosphate mixers and the resultant slurry is poured onto two 48-in. slowly moving rubber conveyor belts. By the time the slurry has reached the head pulley, the material has set su4iciently to be broken and sized as desired. The discharge from the casting belts is fed to the four rotary kilns in the preparation plant, where it is dried and coked to the proper degree for subsequent chlorination. With the peatless feed the capacity of the kilns was found to be about double what it had been before, so that the four rotaries suffice for a 10-unit operation, thus making it unnecessary to operate the extruders and tunnel kilns. In addition to saving the cost of the peat, the new system can be operated with about 85 per cent less labor than was formerly required in the preparation plant. The new pellet production system has also made it feasible to install centralized crushing equipment with suitable conveyors and a loading station. Containers of 8000 lb. capacity were substituted for small cubicles of 1000 lb. capacity which formerly were used for charging the chlorinators, and trailer trucks were substituted for the small trains originally provided for transportation from the preparation plant to the chlorinators. These changes resulted in a considerable saving in handling and transportation charges. The purpose of this paper is to relate briefly the development of magnetic separation and its extension from the separation of iron into its present use in the nonmetallic field, to suggest possible future extensions of its field of usefulness and its possible cooperation with other separating methods. The engineering design of separating machines, and statistics as to the number of machines in operation, types, their location and production are outside the scope of this paper. Specific data will be given, however, on certain selected applications. A large part of human endeavor consists in separating one thing from another; the good from the bad, the desired from the undesired. In fact, a philosopher might plausibly claim that separating things into categories and choosing between them is the object of thought itself. In dealing with matter, separation is nowhere more inherently necessary to attain our objects than in mining and metallurgy. Both our desire and our ability to make separations are results of the physical differences between things. Gross separations such as removing ore from worthless rock or coal from slate are usually made visually and depend upon form and color, which are physical properties. When the desired and the undesired things are intimately mixed, however, it becomes impractical to select visually even if the individual particles are readily recognizable to the eye, and some automatic way of making the particles separate themselves on the basis of their own inherent differences in physical properties must be resorted to. Some of the physical properties which have been used as a basis of separation are: color, shape, hardness, size, density, elasticity, surface propertics (surface tension in contact with liquids, etc.), electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and magnetic susceptibility. Differences in these properties are used in the following methods of separation: color sorting, sifting, settlement in air and in liquids, float-sink methods, flotation, electrostatic and magnetic separation.

ONCE it was believed that anthracite or coke were the only fuels generally available and suitable for the generation of water gas, particularly so when this gas was made in the generators of standard carburetted water-gas sets such as are commonly used in the manufacture of city gas. During the past 8 years, practice has changed considerably and it is -now common to find gas plants operating without anthracite or coke and using bituminous coal in the generator. This change in fuel has appreciably increased the marketability and sales of certain coal producers' products; accordingly it is of interest to coal operators and others to know the reason for this change, the present trend in practice and the adaptability of various coals for generation of water gas. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and some of the factors relating thereto. BITUMINOUS COAL NOT IDEAL BUT CHEAPER THAN COKE In spite of many changes which have been made in both process and generating apparatus for using bituminous coal as generator fuel more efficiently, in general it is not an ideal fuel for this purpose. It is supplanting coke because it costs less; it is so much cheaper per ton delivered at the gas works that water gas made therefrom costs less per unit-volume than that made from coke, even though the quantity of generator fuel consumed per therm (100,000 B. t. u.) of gas made is greater with coal. This is the reason why so many city gas plants, as well as others, are using bituminous coal instead of coke.

From the very beginning when an ore body is blocked out, till the last ton of mineable ore is shipped to the smelter, consciously or not, a mining engineer is incessantly wrestling with the materials- handling problem. In the mine and the plants, over the haulage routes, and at the shipping terminals, his fundamental responsibility is to see that each ton of ore and/or waste is extracted, processed and moved easily and economically. Success or failure of many a mining enterprise often rests principally with the judicious and effective application of existant materials-handling technique or its innovation. Time and again, key innovations in practicing techniques have turned a losing venture into a successful and profitable one.

A simple on-stream particle-size analysis method is presented that leads to a bulk-property single-channel device; although the concept can be extended to multi-channel sizing information. The method is based on continuously measuring and comparing the percent solids in the sample stream and in an internal-reference stream containing only undersize particles. A semipermeable hydraulic system is used such that the particle mass concentration in the internal stream can vary, and is always proportional to the undersize particle mass concentration in the sample stream.

Fundamental investigations were made on the treatment of slime and the chrysocolla flotation, both of which are urgent problems to be solved in copper oxide mineral flotation. Unfavourable effects of slime on flotation are caused by the slime adsorption at the air/liquid Interface as well as the slime coating on the mineral surface. The adsorption of slime at the air/liquid interface was measured by using various kinds of slime particles. As a consequence, goethite, bentonite and talc tended to adsorb markedly at the interface. As a desliming method, slime flotation with a polymer flocculant such as polyethylene-oxide prior to the ordinary copper oxide flotation was found to be effective. The use of both a copper-avid organic reagent and an alkyl xanthate was examined for a selective collection of chrysocolla through xanthate adsorption tests, chrysocolla float- abllity tests and flotation tests for synthetic and natural ore. The copper-avid reagents used were salicylaldoxime, 8- hydroxyquinollne and benzoin-a-oxime. As a result, the ad- sorption of higher xanthate such as amyl xanthate on chrysocolla as well as the chrysocolla-to-air bubble attachment was increased by the presence of a copper-avid reagent under suitable reagent addition and pH of pulp. Flotation tests for synthetic and natural ores confirmed that chrysocolla could be floated sufficiently and selectively with a copper- avid reagent like 8-hydroxyquinoline or salicylaldoxime with its subsequent collection by amyl xanthate.

Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are, subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original property of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direction of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratification, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratification but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

Modern developments in alloy steels have been so rapid and diverse that engineering practice has scarcely had time to re-appraise all items of past experience wherein conclusions became axiomatic under conditions that no longer apply. A case in point is the wet screening of abrasive ores within the fine range still looked upon as belonging exclusively to classifiers. By virtue of the development of stainless steels (18 per cent Cr, 8 per cent Ni), it is no longer true that classifiers are more economical than screens in closed circuit with large-tonnage ball or rod mills at 65 or even 100 mesh, provided a selective overgrind of the higher-gravity constituents of the ore is not desired. Wet screening of ores is a highly corrosive as well as an abrasive operation, because of the inevitably high degree of oxygenation of the water. Screen cloth of ordinary or spring-steel wire almost at once becomes pitted and covered with a film of corrosion products, which causes rust-blinding of fine-mesh screens and offers high frictional impedance to the flow of ore particles. On the other hand, the well-known properties of stainless steel enable it to maintain a bright surface, and so to eliminate blinding either by ore particles or by corrosion products. That a large-tonnage mill grinding hard ore to 65 mesh can be operated economically in closed circuit with screens instead of classifiers has recently been demonstrated at the Copper Cliff concentrator of the International Nickel Co.; in the test to be described, a 6½ by 12½-ft. Marcy rod mill ground from 625 to 820 tons of ore per day to approximately 65 mesh, operating in closed circuit with three 4 by 5-ft. Hum-mer screens, without any classifier. Stainless-steel cloth gave an indicated life of several months. There was no difficulty with blinding, yet dilution and spray water could be controlled so that screen undersize averaged not less than 40 per cent solids. In contrast, ordinary carbon steel was pitted and blind with rust within 40 hours.

During 1967, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago adopted a policy of land application as a method of using the solids produced in the wastewater treatment process. Research by the Agronomy Department of the University of Illinois, several demonstrations on farm land, reclamation of acid strip-mine spoils, fertilizing a land fill, and reclamation of an alkaline sand waste pit showed the value of using wastewater solids to reclaim marginal and submarginal lands. To launch the Solids-On-Land Program, 10,000 acres of land in Fulton County, Ill., was purchased, part of it previously strip-mined for coal. The Sanitary District initiated a water monitoring program, constructed holding basins, leveled the land, awarded a liquid fertilizer transportation contract, installed a distribution end application system, and began application and crop production. During 1972, the Sanitary District completed the first year of application and harvested the first corn crop. The corn yielded 60 bu per acre while the previous year in a demonstration field it yielded 56 and 13 bu per acre, respectively, on treated and untreated strip-mined land.

Crushed limestone is now being "de-dusted" at the Warner Co. plant in Bellefonte, Pa., by a new high-efficiency classifier utilizing aerodynamic principles not previously employed in classifiers. Crushed limestone for certain glass industry requirements must not have more than 10 pct fines in the overall aggregate, and it is the function of the new-type classifier to separate these fines from the coarse material. During the development of this classifier by the Buell Engineering Co. of New York, it was found to have possible applications for separating pulverized coal, sintered metals, ores, mineral flours, and fillers, among other items. Limestone from Warner's deep mine is initially crushed and particles larger than 3/8-in. mesh are burned in kilns to provide calcium oxide for the chemical industry. The 3/8-in. screenings are dried and crushed to -16 mesh for use by the glass industry. For those applications requiring a minimum of fines, no more than 10 pct -100 mesh material is allowable in the end product. Hence the need for high-efficiency separation.

The economics of fuel oil must be considered in two aspects; viz., fuel oil as one of a number of competitive fuels and fuel oil as a refined product of petroleum. "Fuel oil" is usually defined as that product of petroleum which is used in furnaces for the generation of heat by simple combustion. It is true that any product of petroleum used in an internal combustion engine is essentially a fuel oil, but such oils are not included in the class known as "fuel oil." Fuel Oil as One of Several Fuels For a number of years, the petroleum industry has believed that the petroleum reserves were very limited and that petroleum products would begin to become scarce within a few years. The industry has believed that there would be a gradual but continual rise in prices as a result of this impending scarcity. The industry, therefore, has informed the users of fuel oil thai., once they were eliminated by price, they were eliminated for all time. T. W. ROBINSON, Pueblo, Colo.: Mr. Potter's review is a striking testimony to the important part played by science in this branch of practice. But, the question arises, In which department has science effected most ? The available raw material, the size of furnaces, the general design and equipment of the plant, and the daily management, are particulars, each of which contributes to the general result, while the effect of each merges into that of the others. The following notes concerning the operations of the furnace-plant of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (formerly the Colorado Coal and Iron Company), at Pueblo, may throw some light upon the question of their relative importance. This company operates three stacks, and when the plant first came under my observation, about nine months ago, the furnaces were constructed, equipped,and run as stated below: Raw Materials.—The main sources of ore-supply were, as they still are, the Orient and Calumet mines of the company. The Brecce and Morning Glory ores, mentioned below, were formerly brought from Leadville, but are practically now no longer used. The Orient ore is a porous brown hematite, easily reducible in the furnace. The Calumet is a magnetite, very refractory in character, requiring preliminary roasting. Both are fairly uniform in composition. The Breece and Morning Glory are red hematites, resembling in appearance the soft ores of the Vermilion range, Lake Superior. The coke here used is made of coal from the company's mines in southern Colorado, and is distinct from that produced by the company in the western part of the State. The structure is similar to that of Alabama coke. The limestone employed is a calcite. The analyses are given in Table I. THE value of molybdenum as a ferroalloy has been known for many years. For a long time, however, the metal was used only on a small scale in the iron industries, because the known source of supply appeared inadequate and the cost to the consumer was not stabilized. The world's production of molybdenum prior to 1914 was only a few thousand pounds per year and even during the war period annual production was only about 800,000 lb. Production during 1929 and 1930, however, was over 4,000,000 lb. per year and that of 1931 promises to be of the same order of magnitude. This remarkable increase in production is due primarily to the development of a large molybdenite deposit at Climax, Lake County, Colo., which has accounted for 80 per cent of the world's production of molybdenum during the past two years. Based on conservative esti-mates, the deposit at Climax has the capacity to maintain its 1929 and 1930 rate of production for 100 years or more. The production of molybdenum ores has been established on a new basis-in recent years as compared with the period during and before the world war. During the earlier period, production came from small deposits and the cost to the consumer fluctuated. At present, production comes from a few large deposits and the price is not only lower but also fairly constant. In recent years the price of molybdenum has consistently dropped as consumption increased. The present price is $0.95 per pound of molybdenum in ferromolybdenum and $0.80 for molybdenum in calcium molybdate. Before and during most of the war, Australia, Norway, and a few other foreign countries were the chief producers, while at present the United States is producing over 90 per cent of the world's production. With molybdenum available at a moderate cost, the steel industry has been adopting more and more the use of molybdenum as an alloy addition. The energies of formation of ordered and disordered solid solutions of composition CusAu and the energy of ordering in this alloy were determined by tin solution calorimetry. The degree of order was measured by X-ray diffraction and electrical resistance and microhardness measurements were made on ordered and disordered specimens. AMONG the phenomena associated with the order-disorder transformation of a solid solution, the change in internal energy is of special interest because of the part it plays in the various theories of ordering. Published values for the decrease in internal energy accompanying the formation of a superlattice from a disordered solid solution of composition CuAu range from —370 to —2260 cal per gram-atom. Some of these values represent calculations based on theory and others are the results of experimental measurements. The distinction between the change in internal energy, AE, and the change in enthalpy, AH, can here be neglected, because they are approximately equal for solid-state reactions at normal pressure. An analysis of ordering by Bragg and Williams' predicts an energy change of —605 cal per gram-atom for the formation of a superlattice in the alloy Cuau from a completely random solution. Peierls" application to Cuau of Bethe'sb earest-neighbor theory yields —560 cal per gram-atom for the formation of a superlattice from a matrix which initially contains short-range order. Cowley' extended the nearest-neighbor approach to include as many as five shells of neighbors; on this basis a change in energy of —500 cal per gram-atom is expected. Eguchi," using a quantum-mechanical treatment, calculated a value of —2260 cal per gram-atom for the difference in the energy of completely disordered and completely ordered Cu,Au. Sykes and Jones- eated a completely ordered alloy and measured its heat capacity as a function of temperature. This measured heat capacity agrees closely with the corresponding value found by the Kopp-Neumann (or mixture) rule up to about 250°C and above this temperature exceeds it, especially near the critical temperature for ordering. The difference between the integrals with respect to temperature of the observed and the Kopp-Neumann heat capacities was considered to be the energy of ordering. By this method Sykes and Jones found a value of —530 cal per gram-atom. This value is not adjusted for the short-range order remaining above the critical temperature. The pres- ence of such short-range order is suggested by the difference between the measured heat capacity and the extrapolated Kopp-Neumann heat capacity immediately above the critical temperature. Values reported by Weibke and von Quadt' and by Hirabayashi, Nagasaki, and Maniwaa were obtained in the course of investigations primarily aimed at other objectives. Weibke and von Quadt measured the temperature coefficient of the electromotive force of a Cu-CuAu cell. They obtained a value of —1010 cal per gram-atom for the heat of formation of the alloy at 500°C, at which temperature there is no long-range order. They also obtained —1380 cal per gram-atom as the heat of formation of the ordered alloy at 370°C. Considering the heat of formation of the disordered alloy to be independent of temperature, they estimated the energy of ordering at 370°C as —370 cal per gram-atom. At this temperature long-range order is incomplete and the degree of order changes rapidly with temperature. Hirabayashi, Nagasaki, and Maniwa," using an annealing calorimeter, investigated an alloy containing 23.4 rather than 25.0 atomic pct Au and thus could not obtain complete order. Thelr value of the energy of ordering was —490 cal per gram-atom. Orianis has recently investigated the Au-Cu system by the galvanic emf technique. He reports values for the heats of formation of Cu-Au alloys, from which the heat of formation at 427 OC of an alloy of composition CuAu may be found by interpolation. This value is —1080 cal per gram-atom. In the work here reported, disordered and ordered alloys of composition CuAu and corresponding mixtures of gold and copper were dissolved in liquid tin and the heat effects measured. These heat effects are small, since the dissolution of gold in tin is exothermic and the dissolution of copper is endothermic. The method, therefore, yields fairly precise values of the heats of formation of disordered and ordered alloys and of the energy of ordering. Experimental Procedure The calorimeter consisted of a long-necked Dewar flask immersed in a constant temperature salt bath and has been described by Ticknor and Bever." The chief changes in this equipment were an improvement in vacuum and the replacement of the mercury thermoregulator by a resistance thermometer control circuit. The solvent, which was maintained at a constant temperature near 350°C, consisted of 500 grams of 99.99 pct pure tin. The solute samples were mixtures of gold and copper in the proportion corresponding to the composition Cu,Au or solid solutions

THIS investigation of the effect of bottom shape and life on slag volume was carried out in two Lectromelt top-charge furnaces whose rated capacity is 1000 lb per hour. Unfortunately, just as the work [ ] was started, our steel tonnage was reduced approximately one half, therefore we did not accumulate enough data from which to draw any definite conclusions. Furthermore, the life of the linings in these furnaces was greatly decreased by intermittent operation, which was a further handicap in making a study of this kind. The weight of the heats from which the data were taken varied 1200 lb but all the information was corrected to the standard weight charge for these furnaces of 4500 lb. Almost all the heats were plain carbon; a few contained a small percentage of added copper.

Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted- templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. RADIAL-LINE CONTROL It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire State Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

INTRODUCTION Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newrnont Mining Corporation, is situated high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Portals, offices and surface plants are located near the towns of Ouray and Telluride at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. The Ouray portion of the development was initiated in 1943. Upon completion in 1945 of a 250-ton mill, processing of development ores containing copper, lead and zinc was undertaken; thus, serving as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. These facilities were subsequently enlarged and utilized until 1956. Meanwhile, in 1953 Idarado had acquired The Telluride Mines Company, 62 miles distant by highway; however, only six miles via a network of tunnels which eventually linked the two workings. Extensive underground development and increased ore production necessitated reconstruction and expansion of the milling plant. The facility was designed to accomodate processing of 1700 tons of ore daily. This goal was achieved and it represents the current daily output. MINERALOGY The veins are a compound fissure which have undergone several stages of mineralization. The first stage is represented by complex ores of copper, lead and zinc in a quartz gangue.
