Concentrating mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores by the leach-precipitation-flotation method is an old operation at the Miami Copper Co. The idea was conceived and the method developed at Miami by F. W. Maclennan and Harmon Keyes during the years 1929 to 1934, and it was these men who gave the term LPF to this process. Miami at that time had considerable reserves of mixed sulfide-oxide ore.* In the development of a suitable treatment method, it was natural that leaching of the oxides with acid and the precipita¬tion of copper from the resulting copper sulfate solution by iron was investigated. Demerara Bauxite Co. in British Guiana has come a long way in tackling the problem of stripping and removing overburden. When the company started mining in 1917, overburden was hand-loaded into carts pulled by donkeys. Since then it has been recognized that overburden removal is one of the greatest problems. Over the past years a great quantity of equipment has been purchased, discarded as it became obsolete, and replaced with better and cheaper tools. The policy has kept the company's overburden removal costs within reason. Accurate records of costs per cubic yard and cubic yards per hour per unit have been kept for many kinds of equipment. Walking draglines and hydraulicking equipment are the key approaches to the current operation, but shovels, tractor-drawn wagons, self-propelled rubber tired scrapers, and tractor-scrapers still have limited applications. Mackenzie, operational headquarters of the Demerara Bauxite Co. Ltd., is on the Demerara River, 65 miles from Georgetown, British Guiana. Ore treatment and ship loading facilities are at Mackenzie, head of navigation for ocean-going vessels and the mines are located 7 to 40 miles farther upstream.

"The most conservative persons I ever met are college undergraduates." Woodrow Wilson said that in 1905. No one is saying anything like it today. Chaos on the campus was a cliche of the sixties. Since 1905, education has expanded in every direction. Many more people are being educated for much longer periods of time. The school-leaving age has risen from 14 years to 20 years, on an average. Many are in school until after their 25th birthday. On the surface this situation appears all to the good. Our technical society needs a massive yearly infusion of semitrained (or educated, if you prefer) new blood. The efficiency of our economy and our standard of living are tied to high individual productivity which can be achieved only with an educated work force. Our democratic institutions are said to be founded on an educated electorate.

The phase diagram of the Zr-H system over the range 0 to 65 atomic pet was determined by high temperature X-ray diffraction methods. Results show a eutectoid between a zirconium and the hydride phase. The eutectoid temperature was established at 560±10°C with a eutectoid composition of 42*3 atomic pet H. The hydride phase of the lowest hydrogen content is stable only above the eutectoid temperature, but is formed and retained in a metastable state during reaction of zirconium with hydrogen at temperatures below 560°C. One hydride phase is indicated that exists over the composition range 55 to 65 atomic pet H. RECENT increase in the industrial importance of zirconium has stimulated several investigations of the reaction of zirconium with hydrogen. Review of the literature on interpretation of absorption isotherms' ' shows that attempts were made to relate the observations to the room temperature hydride phases reported by Hagg.3 However, more recently Schwartz and Mallett' reported the existence of a new hydride phase, isomorphous with the lower hydride in the Hf-H system described by Sidhu.4 This phase was found adjacent to the metal in a diffusion gradient sample. The application of a simple, two-dimensional computer technique for evaluating rock burst potential in cut-and-fill stopes was investigated. The principal purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of high-modulus fill and destressing as aids in the control of rock bursts. Two conclusions that are probably of general applicability are drawn. First, high-modulus fill is ineffective as a means of increasing the mine stiffness and acts to control rock bursts only if it supports enough load to reduce substantially the stresses on the unmined vein material. Second, destressing is most effective if it is performed when the vein material is near the point of failure.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specified engineering design criteria which fully detail the proposed method of exploitation. The operational design of a mine falls essentially within the technical discipline of the mining engineer, under the constraint that the technical design should be aimed at optimizing the financial attractiveness of the project. In the case of a marginally viable proposition it becomes vitally necessary to identify the best set of design parameters which together will add up to an optimum investment proposal. This paper examines some fundamental logic of optimization for a "wasting asset" type of investment such as a mine, with special reference to the rate of annual production and the strategy of selective mining.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

PRORATION in the petroleum industry has come to mean a method for curtailing the production of crude petroleum by artificial effort, and it is in this sense that the term is employed throughout this paper. Although a contrived curb on supply has been invoked at various times in the past in particular fields and to meet specific situations, it is not until the past few years that this procedure has become general and assumed a dominant role in the oil business. In the sense that we now understand it, proration had its inception in the Seminole area of Okla-homa in 1927, from which time and place the practice spread to include practically all the flush oil fields of the country, especially those of California, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. At present there is perhaps no phase of the oil business that commands more attention than proration, nor one that engages more time and effort on the part of executives in the business. The practice of proration, indeed, has not only become an integral part of the policy of most companies and operators, but it has also taken on the aspects of a "movement" involving two schools of thought with considerable feeling, and at times some bitterness, on both sides. In this atmosphere it is difficult to find calm, dispassionate consideration of proration, for most discussions are either vigorous exhortations by its proponents, or else sharp condemnations by its opponents; although it appears that the majority of the industry is clearly "in favor of" proration. It is hoped that this analysis will be taken as an attempt to appraise the movement as an economic force, without bias and without regard to the incidence of the conclusions upon any preconceptions that the industry may entertain.

The value of industrial rocks and minerals produced in New Mexico in 1978 exceeded $227 million. The state ranked first in the nation in production of potash and perlite and was a leader in pumice production. Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fuorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand. Non-metallic resources are distributed throughout the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9% to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

Fine particles in liquid suspension can be agglomerated by a number of mechanisms. Well-known methods include the addition of electrolyte to reduce the zeta potential and allow mutual adhesion arid the use of polymeric flocculants to bridge between the particles. A more recent technique, "spherical Agglomeration", is the subject of this paper. The process involves the addition of a second liquid which is immiscible with the suspending liquid and preferentially wets the particles to cause particle adhesion by capillary liquid bridges. Progress in the application of spherical agglomeration to a number of distinct technological fields is reviewed in this paper. The areas of interest include the formation of dense, highly spherical agglomerates, the separation of solids from suspension and the fractionation of complex, multi-component solids mixtures, such as ores. Some of the more interesting recent applications in the energy and environmental fields, such as the beneficiation of' coal and tar sands, are highlighted.

THE origin of recrystallization textures continues to be a matter of controversy. One explanation is that a recrystallization texture occurs because only grains having a limited range of orientations ever appear in the deformed matrix—the oriented nuclea-tion* hypothesis. Another explanation is that grains essentially having all orientations are nucleated but that those having certain orientations grow much more rapidly than any others in the deformation texture, and thus only the rapidly growing grains survive when recrystallization is complete. There has recently appeared a great deal of evidence'- indicate that recrystallized grains of face-centered cubic metals are frequently related to their parent grains by rotations of 20" to 40" about a common [lll] direction. Furthermore, it has been observed that the growth rate of the new grains depends upon their orientations with respect to the matrix, and that the most rapidly growing grains lie within the stated range of orientations. In a recent note, Beck7 has concluded from observations of this type that oriented growth alone is responsible for the appearance of preferred orientations in re-crystallized metals. It should be pointed out. however, that many of the available data indicate that oriented nucleation operates in addition to oriented growth. Thus, while oriented growth may permit a selection to be made among nuclei of several orientations, only a limited number of orientations are available in the first place for such selection.

This study confines itself to an examination of the two million square miles of the northern hemisphere which the geographer defines as the terrestrial Arctic, a land region in which the mean temperature of the warmest month is below 50°F-in effect, the area lying north of the tree line. The engineering and human problems there are of a different order of magnitude than is generally true of the sub-Arctic. Whether in Dawson Creek or Matanuska, in Mo i Rana or Skelleftea such problems are of the same general order as in Hibbing or Noranda. The same is not true in Kong Oscar's Fjord or Lancaster Sound.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing. committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. THE communication which I have to lay before my fellow-members of the Institute, is no elaborate paper, nor the statement of any great discovery ; it is simply the record of convenient methods of conducting topographical surveys, and of keeping the notes of the same; methods that have grown out of practical experience, and have saved me many a day's labor by facilitating office and field work, and at the same time secured a greater degree of accuracy than is obtained by the methods now in general use. I assume it as granted that no topographical map is worthy of the name, except it represent the elevations and depressions of the surface by means of horizontal or contour lines. In the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the contour lines are traced for every fifty feet vertical height, I believe, by running out the line with level and compass through all its meanderings on the surface ; this, of course, is a very tedious, though accurate process, but "in the woods," where many of our surveys have to be made, it would be practically impossible. * A complete magnetic picture of the Mesabi range is now available for the first time with the release of 21 additional maps based on the aeromagnetic survey of 30,000 square miles made jointly by the USGS and the Minnesota Geological Survey. A potential iron formation with a magnetic pattern remarkably like that of the Mesabi iron range lies buried beneath the glacial drift in a wide belt extending some 30 miles across the northwest corner of Itasca County in north central Minnesota. Identification of three new uranium minerals by the USGS was recently announced. The new minerals, andersonite, swartzite, and bayleyite are, respectively, hydrous uranyl carbonates of magnesium, of sodium and calcium, and of calcium and magnesium. They were first observed by Charles A. Anderson, Survey geologist, in a coating on gypsum on the 300-ft level of the Hillside mine, Yavapai County, Arizona. International Minerals and Chemical Corp. has announced a $4,000,000 expansion and development program in the Polk County phosphate fields in Florida, Plants for the manufacture of multiple superphosphate and phosphate chemicals including dicalcium p osphate for animal feed and chemical purposes, and a sulphuric acid are planned. Office building, machine shop, warehouse, and laboratory are also scheduled for erection. A new type of tramp iron detector is being used on the conveyor belt feeder at the South Agnew stripping operation. It is made of an alloy of aluminum, nickel and cobalt and does not have any electric coils. The alloy, known as Alnico, is remarkable for the permanence and intensity of the magnetism which it retains. The detector was made by Dings Magnetic Separator Co. and it is probable that Alnico will be used in magnetic separators. The American Society of Engineering Education estimates that unless the percentage of high school graduates entering engineering colleges is increased, there is a strong possibility that instead of a large surplus of engineering graduates, which has been propehsied rather widely, there will soon be fewer engineering graduates available than are needed annually by our national economy. This conclusion is reached from a survey that shows that engineering enrollments are only slightly higher than prewar whereas industrial expansion is increasing the need for engineers. * The natural resources of Korea are being investigated under ECA sponsorship. E.J. Longyear has just embarked 8 crews for that country; two drills are scheduled for base metal search while six are slated for development of coal reserves. An innovation in the development work in the iron country has been the adoption of the Drill-Mobile, jumbo-mounted drills on rubber-tired carriage, by Cleveland-Cliffs at the Mather A and B mines. The machine is being used to cut stations in the new Mathed B shaft and for driving development headings at the Mather A.

The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

Aggregated models of a bank of flotation cells have frequently been used, assuming that a single-cell model can be used for control and estimation purposes. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of this approach, and show that single-cell aggregated models may very well be used in order to estimate the aggregated net flotation rate constants of the bank. These estimates would usually be very crucial in order to control the plant.

Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of cassiterite and fluorite with oleic acid as collector and with alizarin dyes as modifying agents were studied by means of small-scale, vacuum-flotation tests. Artificial cassiterite was prepared for these tests by high-temperature methods, especially by crystallization from borax melts.

I ASK your permission to speak about a matter which is not of a specifically scientific nature, but more of a general-I might even say of an international-nature, and the international character which this city now presents must be my justification for introducing it. The Germans, very often, are thought to be an exceedingly warlike people, but I come to-day in the capacity of a peacemaker. Our German language is an original language; it is, therefore, a language in which it is impossible to change the meaning of a word at will. It may be, perhaps, easier in a combined language, as the English, to associate and to exchange meanings. Now, a word which we hear a great deal at the present day, is "Stahl," in English, "steel." This word means, in the German language, a substance which can be hardened. As the German literature, in relation to metallurgy, is the oldest of the modern world, this circumstance may give the German a right to ask for consideration. But I think, now, when the four languages, German, Swedish, French, and English, compete in rich metallurgical literature, it is very necessary to have uniformity in the nomenclature of iron, which would prove not only useful for science, but equally so for trade. For that purpose I propose to make the divisions of iron so that the word steel shall comprise a subdivision and not a primary division as formerly. Nature furnishes us iron mostly in the state of oxides, and if in any other condition, we must convert the ore into oxide before we can make iron. The oxides are always mixed with certain earthy substances called rock or gangue. The extraction of iron involves, therefore, the twofold process of the reduction of the iron, and im¬parting to it the amount of carbon necessary for technical purposes, and the separation of the reduced and carburized iron from the gangue. The reduction is always effected by carbon or carbonaceous substances (coke, anthracite, carbonic oxide, etc.), and the result is, according to the degree of heat employed, either malleable iron or a non-malleable iron. The process of making malleable iron in this way is called, generally, the direct process-in German, Rennarbeil. It produces the iron in a solid state with a fluid cinder. By this process our ancestors made all their iron, and it has been revived in various ways in modern times up to the process of Mr. Blair, so far as I know, always without commercial success. The
