Rickard, Denver, Colorado: The observations made by the author concerning the treatment of gold-bearing ores, deal with the subject only briefly and in a general way; but, coming from an authority, they invite comment. In stating the fact that a " finely-divided condition " is a necessary characteristic of ores containing free gold, the author must be refer ring to those mining districts only with which he himself is ac quainted. The statement would not be true of certain gold-mining regions in America and Australia. The ores of some Californian mines and the mill-stuff treated at certain of the mills of Clunes and Ballarat in Australia, and of Otago in New Zealand, contain the gold in a free but in a coarse state. Moreover, "reduction to fine sand and flour" is not required by certain ores, even though the gold be in a finely-divided condition. In such cases the gold becomes de tached from the quartz before the gangue has been pulverized into particles as small as those in which the gold occurs. The dry-crushing of free-milling gold-ores is onknown in the new mining regions of the world. It is not clear whether the author has in mind any European district in which such a process is in actual use. If he has, a description of the method and the results obtained would be very valuable. Dry-crushing is, other things being equal, twice as slow and twice as expensive as wet-crushing. In the case of free-milling gold-quartz it serves no purpose, since such ore does not carry sulphides which contain any large percentage of value, and which, by being slimed, may carry away part of that value. The dry-crushing of a free-milling gold-quartz would be considered an absurdity by an American metallurgist. If the ore contain "free gold only," why submit it to a further treatment, such as concentration, after its passage over the amalga mating-plate ? What does the author propose to concentrate ? Again, why anticipate the treatment of tailings by the McArthur Forrest, or some other process ? The satisfaction felt by a mill-man in saving gold by a subsequent treatment of the tailings from his mill appears to me to be like that of the man who shoots at a rabbit,

VENTILATION of all types of coal mines is fundamentally the same, in that sufficient air must be provided to properly dilute and remove dangerous and obnoxious gases and leave the oxygen content of the air not under 19 per cent in all places where men and animals must work. Perhaps animals should not be mentioned, as the speed of mechanical loading leaves livestock behind and outmoded. Since this paper has to do with the influence of mechanical loading equipment on ventilation, the problems will be confined to the splits and the coal-producing places of the mine. The removal of coal dust from the air, or its rapid transmission to the return air courses; the possible increase in the liberation of gases by the multiplication of cuts in the coal made during one shift or multiple shifts; and the additional electrical equipment at the faces, are the factors that cause the added importance to good ventilation in the permissible equipment area of gassy bituminous coal mines. VENTILATION FOR MECHANICAL LOADING IN GASSY MINES In gassy mines, the air currents must be maintained across the faces in such a way as to prevent short cuts to the returns and leaving pockets in which accumulation of gas might occur. To do this, two or more doors are required on almost every entry containing a track to the face, so located that in no event will a trip of cars block open the doors and permit the air to by-pass some place or places on the air-approach side. This method frequently requires the use of unusual lengths of duplex cables to reach the mechanical equipment at the faces, particularly where the distances between parallel working places are 100 ft., as at the Nemacolin mine. Fig. I shows a pillar section being worked with mechanical loaders. This layout requires carrying the air in on the right and releasing it on the left, because the track clearance is on the right side and the line brattice is built on this side from the last crosscut to the face. Thus, the air travels to the face with greater velocity, and gives more assurance of sweeping out the gas that might be exuding from the crevices of the coal. All working places, in driving through solid coal, are thus treated alike. They are all potentially gassy and must be swept clear of whatever may contaminate the air. Once the air starts into the working section, it is not released until it does a good job. Of course the volume of air must be large enough not only to dilute the gases but to carry away explosive fumes and fine coal dust quickly. Mechanical loading entails cutting and drilling of the coal during the same working period as the loading when two-shift and three-shift operations are employed, and all three processes create finely pulverized coal, which in itself is hazardous if not controlled by some means. IN April 1949, Newfoundland became the tenth province of Canada. It had been a Dominion of the British Commonwealth, though actual Dominion status had been suspended for some fifteen years. During that fifteen-year period the Government had been by commission. Throughout the regime of the Commission Government, a limited program of investigation of the mineral resources of the country was in progress. It was during this period that the investigation of the iron resources of Labrador by the predecessors of the Iron Ore Company of Canada began. Since Confederation there has been a marked change in the attitude of mining capital to the new province and a notable acceleration in the tempo of prospecting and exploration. There is no private Newfoundland capital available for mineral exploration. In the past, as now, capital must be attracted to the province. Prior to Confederation, Canadian capital had to cross the barriers of customs and immigration. American capital hazily regarded Newfoundland as part of Canada, with one notable exception, the American Smelting and Refining Company at Buchans. Buchans The most significant mining development in Newfoundland today is the property of the Buchans Mining Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the American Smelting and Refining Co., located at the town of Buchans. Their milling operation produces lead, zinc, and copper concentrates by selective flotation, and also produces a small amount of gravity concentrate. Presently the mill treats, about 320,000 tons of ore per year. Production started in 1928 at 500 tons per day and has been raised over the years to the present figure of 1200 tons per day. Conventional prospecting methods uncovered the original deposit. It was first examined as a possible source of sulphur from pyrite. Geophysical prospecting and diamond drilling resulted in discovery of enough additional ore to warrant a large scale operation. Mining is by open cut methods. In addition conventional underground cut and fill stoping and square set stoping methods are employed. Between 850 and 900 men are employed at Buchans. Concentrates are shipped by rail to Botwood and leave the country through the port. Buchans Mining is currently investigating a Crown concession covering an area of approximately 6250 square miles, adjacent to the area of present operations. Aerial photographs have been made of the area, and geologic parties, supplied by plane, are in the field during the summer months. The concession lies south of the Falconbridge concession. The geology of the Buchans area can be divided into three groups. The first category is the oldest and called the Buchans Series. It consists of volcanic lavas, breecias and tuffs and underlies most of the Red Indian Lake Basin. The second is a group of igneous rocks such as granite and quartz porphyry intrusive in the volcanics. It makes for rough country north and west of Buchans. As a result of the publication, several years ago, of some articles on determining the constants of empirical formulas, the determining the constants of types of curves used for estimating the production decline of oil wells was brought to the writer for study. Methods requiring the minimum of time and labor and the maximum of rigor were sought, as it appeared that the nature of the data from which such curves are computed and the relative uncertainty of occurrence of the events predicted from them did not justify close adherence to the theory on which the solution of such problems is ordinarily based. The technical deficiencies of the solutions presented in this paper, from the standpoint of the method of least squares, are readily apparent to those familiar with that method, but their presentation in detail here is irrelevant to the subject matter. However, it is the author's conviction, after a rather exhaustive study of the problem, that the value of the solutions lose little by the approximate application of the conventional theory. It must be understood by those who use these formulas that the solutions herein given, and the formulas based on them, are merely facilities to aid the valuation engineer in forecasting future events. It is assumed, also, that before application is made of them, prescient judgment based on the circumstances in each case, shows that the forecast has some probability of realization. On this basis only will these formulas be found useful.

Meeting of April 24, 1914.-President Thayer announced the appointment of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation. The Committee on Nominations for officers for 1915 was appointed, as follows: William J. Cox, Chairman; H. Poster Bain, Joseph Daniels, Charles E. Mills, R. V. Norris, E. Gybbon Spilsbury, and Herbert A. Wheeler. The request of twenty residents of Salt Lake City and vicinity for permission to establish the Utah-Nevada Local Section was granted and R. C. Gemmell was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Organization. The following resolution was adopted: Resolved: That under authority of Article V, Section 7, of the Constitution, a special Committee be and hereby is appointed, to consist of the President and six other members of the Institute, to be named by him, Who shall be authorized to appear before the proper authorities at Washington and urge that Mining Engineers be appointed upon the proposed Commission for revision of the Federal Mining Laws. Further Resolved: That the activities of this special Committee be restricted to the authority given in this resolution.

G. w. Thompson,* Brooklyn, N. Y.—This subject has two aspects, neither of which can be ignored: these are the economic aspect and the technical aspect. Under ordinary conditions, economic law will take care of the conservation of tin. Under present conditions it seems desirable that economic law should still be permitted to operate as far as is practicable. It is true that this law operates rather slowly, and that under war conditions it cannot be depended upon to give our Government the supply it immediately needs. There should, therefore, be a designation of the essential industries by the Government, and tin should be supplied for those needs, letting the non-essential industries take what is left. At the same time, information ought to be forthcoming as to how tin can be conserved; with tin selling at 80 c. per pound, more or less, it is to the interest of every consumer to get the best information he can as to how he can save tin. Economic law would properly punish those who do not study their own interests in this way. I deprecate, therefore, any centralized socialistic effort toward avoiding penalties through failure to observe and obey economic law. In saying this, however, I am not unmindful that it is desirable for our Government to take such control of the tin situation as may be necessary to the prosecution of the war, practically regardless of the effect of such action upon individual industry, which should studiously seek to adjust itself to the new condition. The Government should promulgate such technical information as it can collect, showing how .tin can be conserved, and should urge upon every consumer the exercise of his common sense in self-protection. There is very little danger of any one attempting to hoard or corner tin, in the present state of the market. Most consumers will be glad to live from hand to mouth, covering their sales by purchases, or vice versa. As to the technical aspects: Tin and tin alloys are used to give certain practical and also certain artistic results. The practical factors are those involved in proper adhesion, continuity of surface, protection, the right degree of hardness, proper working qualities, etc. The artistic results are those that appeal purely to the eye or to our cultivated sense of what is desirable. There is no doubt that a great deal of tin could be saved if there were not a demand for certain pleasing effects. Row can this saving be brought about? The users of tin bearing alloys are not the only ones involved in this question. The manufacturers of solder and babbitt have for a long time sought to give certain appearances to their fabricated bars and ingots in order to make them more salable. The user of a solder is very apt to judge of its working qualities by the appearance of the bar; the same thing is true with regard to babbitts. There was a marked increase in the investigation of undeveloped areas in Colombia during 1936. The Shell company commenced geological and geophysical investigations on an intensive scale in the Upper Magdalena Valley and at the end of the year had several geological and geophysical parties working in that area. These investigations were supplemented by aerial photography and it is understood that negotiations are under way for having this work continued. The Shell is reported to have acquired some options and leases on private properties in the Upper Valley region and in the western part of Cundinamarca. The Socony Vacuum was making preparations to begin seismograph work on its property north of the Sogamoso River, acquired in 1934 from Sefior Luciano Restrepo. This company will probably start drilling on the property during 1937. The Richmond Petroleum Co. (Standard of California) is said to have renewed geological investigations in the Upper Magdalena Valley above Honda. Local Colombian interests took an active part in applying for concessions on nationally owned lands in the area between the Carare and Magdalena Rivers. G. H. CLEVENGER, Colorado Springs, Colo.-Mr. Crowe's paper will be of great interest to cyanide operators, as it is a distinct new development in cyanidation. After reading the paper it occurred to me that some of us had done practically the same thing some time ago, but without design and unconsciously. I refer particularly to the operation of some of the earlier types of vacuum filter, used in connection with a dry vacuum pump and a receiver, which is somewhat similar equipment to that employed by Mr. Crowe. However, we did not appreciate the good effects we were getting from such of this solution as was precipitated, and it has remained for Mr. Crowe to bring distinctly to our attention the advantages of removing air from cyanide solutions before precipitation. Full credit is therefore due him for this very clever improvement in the cyanide process.

The high-temperature allotropy of some heavy rare-earth metals and their alloying behavior with magnesium in the 0 to 50 at. pct Mg region was studied by thermal, microscopic, and X-ray methods. Examination of a hcc phase retained upon quenching alloys of different magnesium content confirmed the existence of a bcc high-temperature allotrope in pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. The lattice constants of the pure metals were determined from a Vegard's Law extrapolation and .found to be 4.05, 4.02, 3.98, 3.96, 3.94, 3.92, and 3.90 + 0.02 A, respectively. In all of the systems studied, the high-temperature bcc phase decomposed eutec-toidally, when slowly cooled, into a hexagonal rare earth-Mg solid solution and a simple-cubic peritec-tic AB-type compound. In 1956, Spedding et al.' observed high-temperature resistivity anomalies in the light rare-earth metals and made several unsuccessful attempts to retain the high-temperature form of these materials at room temperature by quenching the pure metals from temperatures near their melting points. High-temperature X-ray techniques were used by Spedding et a1.' in 1959, to investigate the high-temperature allotropy of the rare-earth metals. This study showed that lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, ytterbium, and possibly gadolinium are bcc at temperatures near their melting points. Discontinuous changes in resistivity at elevated temperatures were also observed for pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and lutetium, thus indicating the possible existence of a high-temperature crystalline transformation in these metals. However, due to experimental difficulties encountered in the high-temperature X-ray analysis of these metals, their allotropic form was not identified. Spedding et a~.~ in 1960 observed that yttrium displayed a continuous solid solubility with lanthanum at elevated temperatures, thus showing the high-temperature structure of yttrium to be the same as that of lanthanum, i.e., bcc. Similarly, the high-temperature alloying behavior of gadolinium with yttrium showed gadolinium to be bcc at elevated temperatures. The bcc nature of the high-temperature form of yttrium was again recognized in 1960 by Eash and carlson4 in their study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with thorium. Gibson and Carlson, in a similar study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with magnesium, found that by quenching Y-Mg alloys from within the 0-solid solution region, Fig. l, they were able to retain the allotropic form of yttrium. It was the present authors' intention to use this method to show the existence of a bcc high-temperature form of the heavy rare-earth metals gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. Simultaneous with the present work, Beaudry and Daane' have shown the bcc nature of the high-temperature form of scandium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. The rare-earth metals used in this study were prepared by the calcium reduction of the fluoride and were further purified by vacuum distillation. In a chloridizing roasting and cyanida-tion plant treating a manganese-silver ore, certain experiments pointed out the way to an improvement in roasting conditions by a change in the degree of crushing. The following short article is simply a description of the various changes that were necessary throughout the plant and of the results obtained. There is nothing unusual in these changes but they are of some interest in that they constitute a good many of the alterations usually resorted to in increasing production. In the beginning, the changes were brought about by an experiment that was not successful, but which clearly pointed to means of improving the operation, and is an example of the fact that often experimental work may result in failure and still be of value in arriving at correct fundamentals. This experiment also shows how far a metallurgist can get out of line in his deductions, particularly in a field with which he is not thoroughly familiar. The ore at the plant of Compania Minera Kildun y Anexas is crushed through a 13-in. gyratory, a 3-ft. standard Symons cone crusher and a set of 16 by 42-in. rolls, the latter in closed circuit with two Tyler type 400 screens. The crushed ore is then conveyed to two fine-ore bins. These provide storage and feed for two 6 by 90-ft. kiln roasters, which discharge directly to coolers. The coolers in turn discharge to a 6 by 12-ft. ball mill, where the ore is ground for cyanidation. Laboratory and pilot-plant tests previous to the mill construction had indicated that minus ¼-in. crushing was satisfactory for roasting, although results did not vary greatly with some coarser or considerably finer crushing. The plant was designed for a capacity of 300 tons per day on this basis. After a few months operation, the initial operating problems were overcome and the anticipated milling rate was reached but the results being obtained were not really good. The plant seemingly did not have much excess capacity in any department but the roasting operation was the most critically limiting factor both as to tonnage and the results obtained. If this could be improved there seemed some possibility of improving the total tonnage rate to some extent. Segregation of the calcine into various screen sizes showed that the coarser sizes were not giving the expected recoveries. In all of the laboratory and pilot-plant testing, any limiting conditions as to the percentage of salt used, temperatures, feed rates, etc., had affected the fine material more than it had the coarse, and even in making laboratory tests at this time the mill conditions could not be exactly duplicated. Further laboratory testing indicated that a segregation of the rushed Ore into a coarse and fine product for roasting might result in some improvement in roast-

In my paper on "The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado" (page 137 of the present volume), attention was called to the decrease in "chlorination " during the washing of the roasted ore with water, to remove soluble salts, before leaching with hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This decrease in " chlorination," which is due to conversion of the silver chloride to some other form not soluble in hyposulphite solutions, and which, for the sake of brevity, will be termed the "going-back" of chlorination, has been a serious obstacle to the successful operation of several leaching-works, and was at Aspen the only difficulty encountered. I have never seen any explanation of the cause of this failure to extract, in actual practice in the mill, the amount of silver chloride shown by laboratory-leachings to be present in the roasted ore; and the purpose of this paper is to record the conclusions arrived at concerning the cause of the phenomenon, and the data upon which they are based. The average decrease in chlorination by washing with water in the Aspen ores for a period of fourteen months was as follows:

IT IS universal practice for corporations, at the end of the fiscal period, to call in a firm of chartered accountants to audit the books. The effect of this is to put an independent organization's seal of approval on the accounting of the business done by the management. Their report lets the stockholders know that the accounts rendered truly present the results of the year's business. This is as it should be; the average stockholder has no personal contact or even acquaintance with the managers of his enterprise and the approval of their stewardship by an indepen-dent agent is very desirable for maintaining confidence in their honesty and ability. But such an examination deals only with what may be called the arithmetic of the business; even the most elaborate audit, as the practice is at present, goes no further than to verify the items of the inventory. In other words, while checking up the entries showing the transaction's of the year and certifying to the correct-ness of the items of the balance sheet, such a report gives the stockholder no idea of the ability with which his affairs have been managed. If the profit and loss balance is satisfactory, as certified by the public accountants, he assumes that the management has been able; where it is not, he turns to the president's report and usually finds an explanation. Such an explanation never takes the form of admission of mis-takes in business judgment or of bad technical manage-ment. It could hardly be expected that it would. The stockholder is generally furnished, therefore, with a certificate of the honesty of his management, but never one of its ability. He does not worry about the latter as long as dividends come in; when they cease, his action generally finds expression in replacing the management. In other words, so long as profits are realized, he assumes the management to be good, even though its success is a matter beyond its control and better management would make larger profits. When there is no profit, the stockholders have no means of knowing whether it is due to conditions beyond the control of the management, as the annual report is sure to allege, or whether, by better management, profit is possible. Here is where the technical audit comes in.

Manganese Resources in Relation to Domestic Consumption Discussion of paper by JOHN V. W. (written discussion).-When a business concern hires an office boy, it takes on the first bright-appearing young chap to apply and pays him the prevailing rate of wages. One of the chief tasks the .office boy is supposed to be competent to perform, is to clean out the office. The manager of the business is highly competent in many lines, but for some reason lacks the ability to keep the office clean. To the steel man, it would seem that manganese is the office boy, and it is purchased just as found and offered to the purchasing agent. The steel mill is competent to perform many functions on a grand scale and with wonderful efficiency, but it is unable to make real steel. It is the function of the office boy, manganese, to do this. It is open to serious doubt if steel mill operators have ever taken seriously the metallurgy of the preparation of crude manganese. It has merely been found that some usable crude manganese may be obtained by running certain manganese ores through an iron furnace when not busy on anything else, or remote from iron ore, or with a lining that is about gone. It is, however, an entirely unwarranted assumption that the metallurgy of manganese has been worked out, or that the supplies of usable raw ore must be limited to materials of some specified analysis. There was a time when ores of copper, lead and zinc, for example, had to be rich and of specified analysis, to be usable, but the commercial raw materials of today bear little resemblance to such ores of the past. The discussions of manganese that I have seen are based on the assumption that the metallurgy of manganese is fully established and that the only usable manganese raw materials are of the kind used today. These discussions contain another error, not so much of statement, but of implication-that the tonnages of manganese materials in the United States are so much in this state and so much in that. When it requires a period of years and the expenditure of millions of dollars for a competent mining company to explore thoroughly a few acres of mining ground, is it not absurd to say that there are so many hundred tons of manganese ore in a certain state? This fact is not apt to be known fully in 10,000, years. I do not charge the mining engineers. who are on record, of making misstatements, because they merely say that so much

This chapter describes a new approach to the solution of stress distribution around underground openings utilizing the finite element method and employing stochastically simulated rock properties. It is well-known from extensive laboratory tests that the properties of rocks, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are not single-valued but form some distribution. If the scatter of test data is attributed to the variability of the rock itself rather than due to an inadequacy in test procedure, then stress solutions have to consider these variations. Utilizing this basic philosophy, the present study was initiated. A long circular opening subjected to plane strain in a hydrostatic stress field was chosen as a specific example to illustrate this approach. The technique adopted in solving stress distributions was based on the finite element method. This method is essentially a generalization of standard structural analysis procedures in which the continuum is idealized as an assemblage of "elements," interconnected at a finite number of nodal points. It is capable therefore of handling different material properties for individual elements in the model, if desired. In this study, each individual element was assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous, and elastic. However, values for Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were randomly varied from element to element according to an assumed frequency distribution.
