The specifications for bridge-steel are usually not severe. The main difficulty is to secure a material which will roll easily, without showing signs of cracking on the corners of the blooms or on the flanges of the beams. In many mills sulphur has been deemed the most harmful constituent in this respect. It has been thought hazardous.to roll steel containing over 0.07 per cent. of sulphur. Yet, in making steel for the Phoenix Iron Company, I have produced from stock running as high as 0.13 per cent. of sulphur a material which rolled very satisfactorily. It is reasonable to infer that the injurious effect of sulphur can be neutralized, to a great extent, by proper treatment in the open-hearth furnace; and the following notes from my usual practice here may be of interest to those obliged to use high-sulphur stock. The steel made at Phoenixville in the 20-ton furnaces has about the following composition : Per cent. Carbon,...0.15 to 0.20 Manganese,.........0.50 to 0.60 Sulphur,..........0.11 to 0.13 Phosphorus,.: .0.04 to 0.06 Silicon,.......... 0.01 to 0.02 The best running heats were made with a small amount of pigiron. In using large proportions of pig the quantity of ore is also increased. This not only cuts the bottom, but also lengthens the time required to bring the charge down. Up to 50 per cent. of pig may be used, but 25 per cent. is much better. A 40,000-pound charge, containing 10,000 pounds of pig and 30,000 pounds of Bessemer butts or beam-scrap, works very well.

MINING and Metallurgy closed the year 1928 showing a small profit, the receipts, exclusive of the charge against members, dues for subscriptions, having been $43,067.81, and expenditures $40,925.58. In accord with the policy of the Board the budget is made each year with the purpose of balancing the accounts rather than the maximum of profit from the undertaking since it is the service the journal performs for members that justifies its existence. This service is being constantly increased. Within the year a number of changes have been made in the dress of the magazine, a new cover adopted, color more frequently used, and illustrations more generally employed. These changes seem to have been appreciated both by readers and advertisers. More space has been devoted to papers read before local sections and to the news of their activities. It is believed that this has helped materially in sustaining and increasing the interest in such meetings. The general, regional, and division meetings have also been fully reported and news of Board meetings, of the work of the various committees, of the employment service and other activities of the Institute has been spread before its members month by month. The 570 pages of reading matter printed in the course of the year constitute not only a record of what the Institute was doing but of what the most representative sections possible of the members of the mining and metallurgical professions were thinking. With 9000 members scattered around the world, occupying key positions in the industry, the Institute affords through its own journal an unsurpassed medium for broad contact and enables the readers with the minimum of expenditure of time and at no extra money expense to keep a general contact with the whole range of subjects touched by miners and metallurgists. In these days of intense specialization but rapid change such contact is particularly valuable. The more formal papers presented to the Institute are published in the Transactions, Technical Publications and the special volumes. Mining and Metallurgy carries abstracts of all papers published ,by the Institute and prints in full the shorter, less detailed papers and those which reflect work in progress rather than finished. Such papers have a news value which is supplemented by editorial comment, discussion by members and others, and the actual news of the organization itself. Without therefore attempting to fill the place of a general news sheet, it has a timeliness that gives it an immediate value much appreciated by the readers. In accord with the general policy of the Board every effort will be made constantly to improve the quality of the magazine to the full extent that its revenue will permit. The tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a clecimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES The Missouri Mining Association has enjoyed a very good year. Last October the society was reorganized and the following officers elected for the year: E. Ross HOUSHOLDER, President, ORE N. MANESS, Vice-president, WILLIAM REBER. Secretary, RUAL CHAVEZ, Treasurer. The head of our mining department, Prof. C. E. Forbes, is now serving as a Major in the United States. Army. We were fortunate in having. Prof. Chas. E. Locke, of Boston, with us for part of the winter to take charge of the senior mining work. During the autumn and winter months we had a number of informal smoker lectures in Norwood Hall. Among the speakers at these meetings were: H. A. Buehler, Missouri State Geologist; Chas. E. THE CHAIRMAN.-Mr. Earle Smith- has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. SMITH,* Cleveland, Ohio-I will start this off by a story of the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "We don't make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don't dare publish the information. So if I collect it and hide it you can't charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation. So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "-academic-matter-as far as II am concerned. ¬I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1936 about the coming war. He said: "Until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don't pay any attention to what is happening to the other man." That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the comptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were not within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the comptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I would say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications. I don't know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. If the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for what they expect to be umpire results, the writers would certainly realize that some of the specifications to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they, certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not be filled by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I want you to think about, because I would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them. In the first place, we generally make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has been nearly enough consideration given to segregation within the bath before it moves into the ladle. I am sure that any of the people who handled the 9400 series of the NE series when it contained the 0.60 per cent silicon have more respect than they had previously for the segregation that is within the ladle; that is, before the metal reaches the ingot mold, the frozen ingots and the segregation in them. Another point to which I think we ought to give serious consideration is the segregation of iron oxide in the ingot-iron type of material, where the distinction between that and the steel segregation is that it is actually segregating iron oxide. Normally we are segregating some form of carbon or sulphur, or something like. that, with the stamping steel industry now coming down into the ranges of chemistry, where the segregation of iron oxide will be just

The experiments described in this paper are very incomplete and only preliminary to those I hope to make in the future. Having had a good deal of experience in cutting, forming and drawing sheet-metals, and feeling a great interest in the commercially new and wonderful metal, aluminum, I applied to my friend, Mr. A. E. Hunt, for some specimens in sheet-form, that I might, from time to time, test its working-properties in presses with which we happened to be experimenting at the works of the Ferracute Machine Company. The chances for such trials being accidental only, and the time having been limited to the last few weeks, no crucial experiments have been tried, and no exact data have been obtained for a rigid comparison with other metals. The results of what little we have done, however, are shown in the articles exhibited in connection with the reading of this paper, which comprise various cups, plates, boxes, bells and cartridge-cup and shells. For the latter I am indebted to my friend, Mr. Hobbs, of the Union Metallic Cartridge Co., who, at my request, ran several pieces of sheet-aluminum through the dies with which he was making brass cartridges. The specimens are rougher than they would be had the metal not been a little too thin for the particular dies which he happened to be running.

Statistical data on the Polish producing business are available only for the first half of 1939. Because of the invasion of the country during September by Germany and Russia all sources of information have stopped, and it is impossible to get even an approximate picture of the status of the industry after that date. The long declining trend of Polish production, which was finally checked during 1938, kept a further upward tendency during the first half of 1939, and there is good reason to believe that the upward trend would have been maintained. It is true, there was little hope of reviving the slowly dying Boryslaw field, although there still remained a slight possibility for an extension in its southwestern direction. Repressuring plans were still discussed, but. could not be put into effect because of extremely complicated and split-up lease ownership. The Gorlice-Lipinki ficld continued to be the main factor in the increase of the country's production. During the first half of 1939 this field received a further important extension in a southern direction. The Schodnica field continued to use repressuring with success. At the end of June, 21 exploratory wells were drilling, 14 of which were within thc Carpathians and 7 in the Miocene geosyncline of the Carpathian Foreland. All of the wildcat wells drilled within the Carpathians were on the struct,ural cxtcnsion of old established fields, but part of the wildcats of the Foreland were on new geological and geophysical prospects. The Opary gas field of the Foreland discovered last year has been further developed. The Government-owned Polmin completed its third gasser. This well penetrated two sands; the upper one, 118 ft. thick, was found at 1312 ft., with an initial pressure of 570 lb. and capable of produeiring 10 million cu. ft. per day. The second sand, 91 ft. thick, was found at 1690 ft., yielding 20 million cu. ft., with a pressure of 760 lb. The well Mieczyslaw, drilled about 3 miles further north on the flank of the structurc, found the first sand watered. The Pioneer No. 5, at Chodonice near Przemysl, which reported somc gas last year, was 5696 ft. deep at the end of June, still drilling in Miocene. Anothe well in the same vicinity drilled by the Gasolina was 1708ft. deep.

By courtesy of the officials of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad, I am permitted to publish the results of an examination made in 1887 and 1888 of' the country west of the Black Hills, and lying between the Black Hills and the foot-hills of the Big Horn Mountains in the northeastern part of Wyoming. With the exception of the country constituting the foot-hills, or the encircling ridge or rim of the Black Hills proper, all of this area is occupied by rocks of Cretaceous age. In the central part of the Black Hills are found the tin-bearing granites, the mica-schists, and gold-bearing slates, already so well known. Surrounding this central area of older rocks (which should be considered as the "Hills" proper) are the attenuated representatives of the Palzeozoic, dipping gently away from the Hills in every direction, overlaid by the gypsum-bearing Mesozoic, which here forms a bold high ridge or rim, completely encircling the Black Hills, and known as the inner ridge. Overlying, and apparently conformable to this, we find the Dakota sandstone, which likewise forms a prominent ridge or rim, known as the first or outer ridge. This is the formation which contains the coal now worked at the mines near Newcastle. It is also the formation in which the best oil-wells have been obtained in the "Stoakdale," or "Beaver," and the " Belle Fourche " oil-districts. Overlying it are the Colorado shales, forming the great plains drained by Beaver creek and the south fork of the Cheyenne river, and extending west to the Belle Fourche, near Donkey creek, where the overlying Fox Hill formation (thin) and the Laramie group, the great lignite-formation, are first seen. The Laramie group occupies the surface from the Belle Fourche at Donkey creek west to the foothills of the Big Horn mountains at Buffalo, an air-line distance of some seventy or eighty miles.

Locality and Geological Occurrence. The Alpine region of Southwest Colorado, comprising the San Juan and Uncompaghre Mountains, is composed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic sehists, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompaghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this direction, the Uncompaghre receives from the east the Red Cafion Creek. Following up the narrow caftan we find the section through white.. sandstone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-liko character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, and we have entered crystalline rock-porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandstone, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is semifused. Ascending still higher, a small

I n 1966 a major expansion program in Canada was undertaken by Inco to meet increasing nickel requirements. Coinciding as it did with a severe labor shortage, a large portion of this expanded production had to be accomplished through increasing productivity in tons per man-shift in every phase of the operation. In the mining section of the company the first step to this end was the adoption of load-haul-dump equipment for ore removal. Concurrent with the expanding use of this equipment, a program to improve drilling and breaking efficiency was also undertaken. The first drilling machine added in the program was 3-boom unit capable of drilling a complete cut-and-fill bench 28 ft wide, and 10 ft high with 12 ft horizontal holes from a single setup. Using one-pass steel, one operator could drill the complete face with- out leaving the controls except to change bits. It is well known that many so-called free-milling silver arcs are so classed more from their value necessitating a cheap process than from a real adaptability to raw amalgamation. Such low--grade ores, carrying more or less sulphurets, are more profitably treated by a cheap rapid process than by the more effective but costly process of roasting arid amalgamation. The tailings are sometimes crudely concentrated, or, after lying and becoming partially oxidized, are again worked in pans. Of late years, by the use of improved methods of concentration, many old low-grade tailings-piles have been reworked to a good profit; and in some improved mills arrangements are made to concentrate before or after amalgamation, thus making a single treatment in mill suffice. It is self-evident that on a low-grade ore a small increase in percentage saved is of no commercial advantage if accompanied by a material increase in cost, and therefore a cheap and continuous system of work is the real necessity, if a fair saving be effected. As an illustration of the possibilities of combined concentration and amalgamation on some ores, the following results of a working test at the New York Ore-Milling and Testing Works will be of some interest. Closed-circuit television was first installed under- ground by United States Steel's Tenessee Coal & Iron Division during the summer of 1957. Placed at a rotary dump location in one of TCI's mines, the installation was designed to permit operation of all functions of the load car haul chain, rotary dump, and empty car haul chain from a remote location, and to improve safety. The initial installation was very successful, and similar ones were subsequently placed at all of TCI's operating ore mines. The 10-ton capacity, automatic coupled mine cars are placed on the load car haul chain by the main-line locomotives. The haulage dispatcher has been located at the skip loading point of the underground pocket, some 80 to 100 ft below the rotary dump. The video monitor is located so the operator has a constant view of the activities around the rotary dump. By means of remote controls, the TV camera can range through a four-way turret of lens changes, can pan 350° in about nine seconds, can tilt 45° up or 45° down in nine seconds, and also can range through an optical focus for any of the lens positions.

In substance, the international aspects of the petroleum industry, as these relate to the United States, are as follows: The domestic production is not keeping pace with the domestic demands; our best engineering talent warns us of the imminence of a decreased production by our oil wells, although more oil is needed; and the only practical source whence this increasing demand can be supplied for some time to come will be the foreign fields. Other nations have given thought to the future and, in recent years, have shown a tendency to adopt strong nationalistic policies regarding their petroleum resources, policies that hinder or prevent the exploitation of these resources by other nationals. In consequence, we find that, facing a probable shortage of the domestic supply, our nationals are excluded from foreign fields; and this in spite of the fact that foreign nationals have been permitted to enter into and exploit our own oil resources on an equality with American citizens and without hindrance or restrictions. This country has supplied the larger part of the petroleum consumed by the world and yet, with a failing supply imminent, it finds that those countries that, have been drawing upon our resources to supply their needs are showing a tendency to exclude us from their resources. In this way we shall be transferred from a position of dominence to one of dependence; and only by sufferance of those countries that are now seeking financial or political control of petroleum supplies, shall we be able to obtain the oil we will need. Impoetance of Petroleum Petroleum has become, during recent years, one of the essentials of our social and industrial life. All civilized countries recognize that the world is dependent on petroleum as on nothing else except textiles: foodstuffs, coal, and iron. Today, the tendency is toward an ever-increasing consumption of petroleum and its products as new and more efficient uses are found for them.
