THE iron trade of America seems on the point of a new departure. After years of struggling against heavy odds, patient endurance in periods of depression and loss, fears and hopes alternating as failure or success seemed to be the penalty or reward ; wanting in sufficient capital, embarrassed by reason of imperfect knowledge and lack of skilled labor, confronted by a powerful foe-every doubt has at last vanished, physical and mechanical difficulties have been largely overcome, capital has become more abundant and remunerative, the excellence of our product has been everywhere established, - and the peculiarities of American character-pluck, energy, and perseverance -have at last placed the trade upon a foundation so broad and stable that upon it we begin to erect the structure of a world-wide business. Concerning the future of the iron trade in the United States there can be but little doubt. The growing scarcity and constantly increasing cost of raw material in Great Britain, their loss of labor by emigration, the social disturbances among the working-classes, assuming a more threatening attitude on each new outbreak ; the rapidly decreasing value of money, in consequence of the enormous production of gold and silver, combine to forbid any return to former prices, and indicate that a point has been reached beyond which any marked increase of production is improbable. The same causes are operating to a greater or lesser extent upon the Continent. . In the meanwhile the growing wants of humanity are rapidly outstripping these sources of supply. The mining fraternity of North America was grieved and shocked to learn of the death of Dr. Willet G. Miller on Feb. 10, 1925. Doctor Miller was for many years the Provincial Geologist of Ontario and the one who more than any other had contributed by his personal work and the reports of his subordinates to the recent extraordinary mineral development of the Province. Doctor Miller was fifty-eight at the time of his decease. A man of unusually stalwart physique, he seemed destined to many years of useful service. His friends in both the American and Canadian Mining Institutes can with difficulty reconcile themselves to his loss. Doctor Miller was born in 1867 in Port Rowan, Ont., on the shores of Lake Erie. After preparation in the high school of his native town, he entered the University of Toronto and took his bachelor's degree in 1890. He pursued graduate studies in geology at Chicago, Harvard, and Heidelberg Universities. In 1893, he was first appointed lecturer and soon thereafter Professor of Geology in Queens University, Kingston, Ont., a chair which he held until 1902. He was then appointed Provincial Geologist of Ontario and was placed at the head of the Survey which was attached to the Department of Mines. Within the next year, 1903, he performed the service that made him famous. In the summer of 1903, in connection with the building of the Ontario Government Railway toward an objective on James Bay, veins had been noticed by construction parties just north of what is Cobalt Lake today, and in the rocky pass that is now traversed by the main line of the Canadian National Railway en route to Vancouver. The pink stain of cobalt bloom on the vein, known later as La Rose, caught the eye of a workman; in November, Doctor Miller recognized the silver in it, and brought the possibilities of the district to general attention. In December, he published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, stating that the veins could be worked at a handsome profit. During the winter and spring, the mining interest awoke, which resulted in the astonishingly productive silver district of Cobalt; but in which, Doctor Miller, because a government official, scrupulously refrained from having any financial interest whatever. Seldom has so high a sense of honor been manifested; and as the result, Doctor Miller commanded confidence and respect to an extraordinary degree. Doctor David Yang has presented an important new flotation development in the area of fine particle flotation technology; at the same time Dr. Yang presents an explanation for the effectiveness of this improved new fine flotation system in terms of an optimum dispersion state. The same statement is made for the case of carrier flotation (ultraflotation), in the removal of anatase from kaolinite by addition of calcite (selective flocculation of the anatase - calcite system and dispersion of kaolinite). Dr. Yang's data and statements raise some important questions, and I will adress myself to the more fundamental aspects of this new flotation system. The addition of sodium silicate, well known as a good depressant-dispersant agent for siliceous gangue minerals, is proved to be greatly enhanced by the incorporation of polyvalent metal salts into sodium silicate prior to flotation, producing in this manner a condition, as described by Dr. Yang, of optimum dispersion, which in the case of fine-grained oxidized taconite can be described as selective flocculation (coagulation) of hematite and almost complete dispersion of siliceous gangue components. Dr. Yang recognizes that the main mechanism, while not completely understood at this time, seems to operate by modifying the surface characteristics of the gangue slime particles so as to prevent collector from bonding there to, and making the particles strongly hydrophilic so they will become fully dispersed and consequently will not float during froth flotation. At the same time it appears that the conditioning reagent also modified the surface characteristics of the floated minerals (hematite and spodumene in this case) so that they will aggregate and tend to more readily adsorb the collector, resulting in an improved flotation kinetics and selectivity.

The object of this paper is to reduce to the simplest possiblc discussion the recent developments in refinery technology without resorting to detailed technical descriptions of the various items. During the year 1929, the most noteworthy tendencies have been towards the installation of more flexible plants, more unified operations, more balanced performance and greater fuel economy. In no other year in the history of petroleum refining has the industry witnessed to as great a degree the crystallization of so rnany developments in almost every phase of the art. Economic pressure has been the controlling factor, supplemented however by a market demand for more volatile anti-knock gasoline and higher quality of lubricating oils, resulting from the extended use of high-compression motors. Catalytic Hydrogenation Possibly the outstanding achievement during the year has been the beginning of construction of plants by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey for the catalytic hydrogenation of the so-called heavier and inferior petroleum oils to produce therefrom not only high yields of anti-knock gasoline, but also lubricating oils equal in quality to the best grades obtainable. It is reported that the plants will operate at a pressure of 4000 lb. or higher and temperatures in excess of 900" F. will be used. The hydrogen required for the conversion will be produced from refinery gases. This type of processing will doubtless be an important factor in balancing future operations; in other words, it can be used to eliminate present waste products and permit production of high-grade products from low-grade crude. JANUARY saw the completion of the 237-ft. Upper-Narrows hydraulic debris dam on the main Yuba River in northern California. This project which is the key unit in a series of four similar structures on the Bear, American, and Yuba Rivers, removes the last obstacle to the revival of California's vast hydraulic gold-mining industry. The Upper-Narrows dam is a single-arch type of structure, and embodies the latest developments in that type of construction. One of the principal innovations used is the series of air vents in the crown (that part over which the water spills) which serve to break the vacuum caused by the spilling water, thus reducing vibration to a minimum. Electric strain gages were also embedded in the concrete of the dam, and it is hoped that by careful study of these instruments true stresses can he determined.

The purpose of this writing is to make available additional data, not previously published, on the zeta potential at various pH values of chrysocolla from the Inspiration mine, Arizona. Much research has been performed on chrysocolla, its physical properties, and its flotation, the results of which have not yielded a commercially acceptable flotation process for its recovery. The present data were collected and are presented to further advance chrysocolla research. Experimental For this investigation a carefully prepared sample of chrysocolla was used. This sample was obtained by crushing specimens from the Inspiration mine and picking out by hand the solid blue particles at -3+8 mesh, by grinding these to 10 mesh and repicking the +28 mesh sizes, by cleaning this product using magnetic separation, and by grinding and screening the material into fractions for final magnetic treatment on a Frantz Isodynamic Separator. THE annual session for the election of officers and transaction of other official business of the Institute, which must be held, in accordance with the By-Laws, in New York on the third Tuesday in February, was the only session scheduled for the morning of Feb. 19. Many members gathered in the auditorium at 10 o'clock, and President George Otis Smith presided. He said that his report was best set forth in the reports of the other officers and committees, which were avail-able in printed form. Productive activity had characterized the Institute's year and a number of new ventures had been successful. He felt that he had "rattled around" in the office of president, as he had traveled some 39,000 miles during the year in visiting the various Sections, having visited everyone that had held a meeting during his term of office. He spoke of the educational effect on a president of these broad contacts and suggested that a three-year course would be even more enlightening than one.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique. Weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure erosion, it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Corrosion rate, erosion rate, and total erosion/corrosion rate are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

THE methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins" inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walls until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. . My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the. "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tremolite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit.

The present operation is located on Whitewood Creek about two miles downstream from Deadwood, South Dakota. Early day placer gold operations took place on this creek from Crook City to an area several miles upstream from Deadwood. Early discoveries were in the Deadwood area. In this particular zone, much of the early work was accomplished at stream level and at various elevations above. In the original operations, it was not possible to reach bedrock in many places due to the ground water level plus the existence of numerous large boulders in the same area. The bedrock in this area is approximately twenty feet deep, consisting of Cambrian and Ordovician sediments. Shortly after the early operations began, many small lode mines and several larger mines released mill tailings directly into Whitewood Creek. This practice continued for a full century, thereby limiting the amount of clean water available for sluicing. These tailings in the stream carried large amounts of heavy minerals along with the natural heavier minerals introduced from erosion and were immediately caught in the riffle boxes, resulting in the suspension of many small sluicing operations. No large scale sluicing or mining was ever done at bedrock level in this area, resulting in an almost virgin placer gold deposit. The old tailings cover much of the area, contributing an additional deposit carrying appreciable gold values. In recent years, a company known locally as New Era Mining Company attempted with some success to exploit the area at bedrock level. Resource and coal quality estimates of three coal deposits in the Western United States were estimated by kriging, a geostatistical method that yields unbiased estimates with maximum achievable precision. Derived geostatistical models were used in kriging to estimate the tonnages of the deposits and to derive contour maps of thickness, structure, and sulfur content. Where data were available on quarter-mile spacing, kriging was used to obtain detailed information applicable to mine planning and design. Where data were sparse, kriging was used to do a preliminary evaluation of total resources. Geologic studies were required to correlate the individual coal beds and to identify complicating conditions such as the presence of faults, burnt zones, channels, and regional changes in thickness and elevation. Where these conditions were identified, they were explicitly integrated into the estimation procedure.
