(communication to the Secretary*):—The Laramie tunnel, though a small one, compares very favorably in the speed of driving with the great Alpine tunnels which have the record so far. I think it safe to say that, taking all things into consideration, the record made at Laramie is the best American record, though it still falls short of the long-tunnel records abroad. In discussing tunnel-records it must always be borne in mind that there are conditions peculiar to each individual tunnel job, so that no comparisons are complete, fair and conclusive. At Laramie there is one point which stands out prominently, and which distinguishes this from any of the recently-built Alpine tunnels, and that is that here we have great progress in an American driven tunnel without the use of a carriage for mounting the drills. At the Arlberg and Loetschberg tunnels, the carriage was an essential condition for progress. All the heading-drills were mounted upon a bar which rested upon a small carriage. This carriage was withdrawn after the drilling and run into the heading after the blast without much disturbance of the drills, and with very little adjustment except that required in jacking the horizontal bar across the tunnel. The carriage was so small in its track-area that it required little mucking to run it in to the face; and as the rock-drills used were heavy machines 38 in. in diameter, progress in setting up and drilling was very much accelerated by the use of the carriage. In 1776 two Franciscan friars, Dominguez and Escalante, started to find a direct route from Santa Fé to Monterey, and in their misguided wanderings northward they reached Timpanogos, now known as Utah lake, where they heard of a much larger body of water to the northwest, of which they were told that it was extremely salt.* They never saw this great lake, because they passed south of it on their way to the Pacific coast. The Dead Sea of North America was discovered in 1835 by James Bridger, a trapper. He and other trappers had ascended the Missouri and had reached the Bear river. A discussion arose as to the course of this river, and a bet was made, to settle which Bridger followed the Bear river to its source, in the Uintah mountains, and from the crest of the watershed he caught sight of the lake, to which he then descended.† He tasted the briny water of the inland sea and wondered if it were an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The lake was first seen by the Mormons on July 24, 1847. A band of them, numbering 145 and led by Brigham Young, had migrated from Missouri in search of a new home in the western wilderness. It is recorded that when Brigham Young stood on the summit of the pass over the Wasatch range and saw the valley of the Jordan outspread before him, he exclaimed: "It is enough. Successful preliminary experiments at the University of North Carolina indicate that computers can provide speedy, accurate identification of the mineral content of rock samples. In just two minutes, the University's Univac 1105 computer solves the complex equations that would often require more than four hours using conventional methods. In addition, the computer is frequently spotting minerals that a geologist might miss simply because he wasn't looking for them.

The influence of reduction roasting and thermal shock on the grindability of a refractory low-grade Michigan iron ore was examined in bench-scale tests. The quantitative effects of the various treatments were evaluated at three sieve levels, 48, 100, and 400 mesh, with ball-mill-grindability and work-index parameters as response indicators. Data from the testing program were statistically analyzed to isolate the effects of cooling rate, roasting temperature, mesh level, and ore chemical condition. All four variables were found to have an important influence on the grindability of the treated ore. Ore chemical condition and roasting temperature had the most pronounced effects.

Used basic brick taken from copper anode furnaces, reverberatory furnace roofs, md copper converters have been examined by chemical analysis, petro-graphical examination, and X-ray diffraction tech-niques. In the anode furnace roof, brick absorb copper and copper oxides, whilst in the reverberatory roof, iron oxide with smaller amounts of alumina and silica are absorbed. Chemical reactions in the converter are most complex since the brick absorb both a copper-copper oxide slag and a fayalite-magnetite slag. CHANGES taking place in basic brick after use in copper smelting furnaces have received attention from C. Burton Clark and J. Spotts Mc Dowell,' who examined brick taken from copper converters, and by G. R. Rigby and B. G. Hamilton' who examined brick from copper anode furnaces. This paper describes the changes taking place in basic brick from all types of copper smelting furnaces and discusses the major reasons for lining wear. A) METHODS OF EXAMINING SAMPLES A variety of used brick have been taken from the following positions in various furnaces, a) roofs, reverberatory arches, and bottoms of copper anode furnaces, b) roofs of copper reverberatory furnaces and c) the tuyere line and end walls of copper converters. The method of examination was standard in that brick were first measured and the extent of wear-back computed. They were next sawn in two by a central cut vei-tical to the working face to enable the freshly cut surfaces to reveal any zonal changes and cracks, both of which usually ran parallel to the working face. Each well-defined zone was then sampled for a) chemical analyses, b) petrographical studies using transmitted and reflected light techniques under the microscope, and c) X-ray diffraction studies on powdered samples. Since the blast Fired August 15th, 1878, which was described by Mr. Clark," and up to November, 1881, we have fired three smaller blasts, one in the southwest corner of the quarry and two in the buttress of rock left standing by the first blast near the mouth of the main gangway. We intended to keep an exact account of the stone thrown down by each blast, but the large quantity required by the furnaces since the beginning of 1879, and the time taken up by more important matters, have caused this to he neglected, so that it is not possible to separate exactly the cost and quantity of stone obtained during this time by the old method from that furnished by the large blasts; yet as the latter quantity has been much greater than the former, some notion of the value of the large-blast plan may be reached by comparing the figures from September, 1878, to November, 1881, with those for times when the old system was exclusively used. Since 1878 wages have been raised, lowered, and again raised, and to get a year of sufficiently large production for fair comparison it is necessary to go back to that ending April, 1872, when wage? and supplies were different from present prices and from those of 1878,.

The behaviour during reduction of iron-ore pellets and sinters was investigated. Several methods for the preparation of agglomerates and their reduction were tried. Commercial agglomerates from world-wide sources as well as experimental samples were tested. The effect of coke additions to pellet and sinter plant feeds was given special consideration. An analysis of the test results has helped to explain many of the phenomena associated with the reduction of iron-ore agglomerates such as swelling, loss in strength and wear resistance, changes in porosity, changes in mineralogy and the formation of metallic iron and slag. A double-layer pellet with all of the coke concentrated in the core proved particularly interesting. Although large quantities of coke showed that partially reduced agglomerates containing metallic iron could be produced in the laboratory, the problem of producing reduced pellets and sinters by the existing agglomerating processes still remains.

"Nestling in a little valley, right under the shadow of the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains and just over the great Continental Divide on the Pacific Slope, are Columbia Gardens, Butte's one rare beauty spot. Here purling brooks, fed from springs of snow-water course through the grounds to lend their aid later in making the great Columbia River. It is a question which has done more to make this oasis the charming place it is, nature or man, for both appear to have put forth their best efforts. The inspiring scenery surrounding the gardens is found in close association with the consummate art of the trained landscape gardener. The most delicate flowers, nurtured in large greenhouses, in the pleasant months of early spring and summer are transplanted into outdoor beds and in many instances woven, as it were, into beautiful designs. Green trees and grass on every side rest the tired eyes.Butte owes this delightful breathing spot to former Senator W. A. Clark, who owns and maintains it. A decade ago there were five large smelters belching forth their obnoxious fumes upon the city, making it impossible for vegetation to flourish within the confines of the town, a condition which fortunately no longer prevails. Primarily with a view of furnishing the children with a healthy playground, other than the muddy or dusty streets, Mr. Clark bought and developed the land upon which these grounds are situated. Upon numerous days in each month during the summer season, when school no longer demands attendance, his street railway carries the little folks to and from this ideal spot, free of all charge. ""Children's Day"" at the gardens presents a scene of life and happiness which once seen can never be forgot."

The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

The figures given here were received through the courtesy of the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij and the Standard-Vacuum. There is an increase in production for the year of approximately 4½ million barrels. In November the average production indicated that during the year 1935 the total production would probably exceed 50 rnillion barrels. To maintain this production, only 106 wells were drilled during the year, mainly in South Sumatra.

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength.

In previous papers by this author on numerical calculations of multidimensional miscible displacement, some simplifying assumptions were made in writing the dispersion term of the differential equation. It was assumed that the flow vectors were essentially parallel to the x-axis. However, in most multidimensional miscible displacements, the flow vectors are not so simply oriented with respect to the coordinate axes. This paper derives the correct dispersion term /or the more general case; gives a difference approximation /or the dispersion tern; and derives the stability criterion for the corresponding explicit difference eguation.

AN elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process. was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest.
