Highly variable milling procedures within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corp. in Nevada made it necessary to estimate copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. Estimation was made by first determining the relationships between desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology-copper mineral type, rock type, and copper grade. This relationship was then combined with previously estimated rock type, mineral type, and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict milling properties.

During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Early drilling results indicated isolated pockets of ore whereas in actual practice the footwall was found to be fairly thoroughly mineralized in shoots within the ore zone. Based on drill results only, the "success factor" (discovery ratio) was only 34%.

The eastern coal-field of Kentucky covers about 11,000 square miles of territory. On the east and south it extends to the State lines of West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. Its western boundary may be roughly described as an irregular line beginning at the Ohio river, in Greenup county, thence through the counties of Carter, Menifee, Wolfe, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Pulaski and Wayne, to the Tennessee line. A recent visit with the engineering students of the Western University of Pennsylvania to the Keeling coal-mine on the south side of Pittsburgh furnished interesting matter to communicate, as may be the case, however, with regard to the striking features of any of our well-arranged larger collieries; for every mine surely appears unique as a whole, though description fails to give that impression, except in particulars.

In the seven years that have elapsed since the AIME World Symposium on Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, there have been a number of significant milling innovations and trends implemented in lead-zinc flowsheets to either improve grade and recovery or to control escalating mill costs. First, mill controls and instrumentation, which only had a foot in the door in 1970, have become increasingly common. In Australia, research into automatic crushing control has been implemented by Mount Isa Mines, and in virtually any large lead-zinc mill worldwide, an assortment of on-stream x-ray analyzers, grinding circuit controls, level detection devices, and reagent metering methods can be found. The increased circuit control offered to mill operators by this new technology points to more efficient flowsheets, as well as to a greater dependence upon computer-controlled operation.

US mine-related fatalities were reduced by 10.3% at metal and nonmetal operations in 1974, according to a report by the Secretary of the Interior to Congress concerning the administration of Public Law 89-577. While there was no significant change in the overall injury experience, the 157 fatalities were the lowest recorded in the mining industry since federal mine inspections began under the Act in 1970. The report attributes this reduction to the "improvement in the quality and increased size of the inspection force as well as the continuing emphasis on mine safety conditions and practices." The year 1974 represents the first full calendar year in which the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) had responsibility for administration of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act, and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Prior to MESA's establishment in 1973, these functions were delegated to the US Bureau of Mines. Research activities in health and safety were continued by the Bureau in 1974.

The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. Fracture tests were conducted on subsize specimens of Charcoal granite to demonstrate that the extent of the nonlinear region at the crack tip can be significant. The model of the fracture process considers an effective crack length as a traction free portion plus a process zone where closing stresses act; this zone is identified by microcracking and interlocking. A singularity is allowed at the effective crack tip. The effective stress intensity factor is the superposition of the stress intensities due to the effective crack and the process zone. By assuming that the closing stress is a linear function, it is shown that a process zone length of approximately one-third the effective crack is needed to match the compliance-determined crack length.

JOHN H. NELSON, Worcester, Mass.-At our plant we have done considerable work on notch-bar testing and are farther at sea now than when we started. So far, we have been unable to get the notch-bar test to be consistent with any other known test. Lately, I have been investi-gating the effect of the position of the notch-bar specimen in a, bar. To do this I took a 3, ½ in. square bar and quartered it, then heat treated the four quarters. Each of these pieces was again quartered and a specimen machined and notched. "In this way we would have notch-bar tests from the exterior to the interior of the bar. These were made of such lengths that it was possible to make four impact tests on each speci-men. Extreme care was taken in marking the position of these test speci-mens in the original bar. The notches were then cut with relation to position of the specimen in the original bar. The second notch was cut 90° from the first, and so on around the specimen. In this way, we have found that, with a 3 ½ in. bar of 0.4 or 0.5. per cent. carbon steel when properly heat treated, we could get impact values ranging from 15 to 100 ft.-lb. Just why this is the case we are unable to state; but it does appear to be a fact that along the outside of the original bar the notch-bar test seems to be low and increases toward the center, but it is not always consistent. For instance, we may have, on a single specimen; one notch-bar test giving us 15 ft.-lb. and another 100 ft.-lb. We have not found such inconsistencies in alloy steels. Alloy steel is consistently good or consistently bad. If it. is good, you cannot readily destroy the impact value, no matter what you do; if it is bad-that is, if it is a poor notch-bar steel-and you have sufficient latitude in your draw, you may correct it. In other words, if the hardness you are working to will allow you to draw to about 1050° F.(561° C.) or over and then quench this steel from the draw heat, you. can raise the im-pact value of the steel from about 4 or 10 ft.-lb. up to-40-or 50 ft.-lb: Just what occurs I do not know. There is evidently a critical-point in steels that have poor impact value, in the neighborhood of 1000 F. to 1050° F. (536° to 561° C.).

The rolling and recrystallization textures in 300°C rolled uranium sheet were investigated using a Geiger counter diffractometer with the modified Schulz reflection technique. Seven sections of sheet material were used in order to obtain sufficient data for quantitative pole figures by the reflection technique. A special integrating specimen table was used for obtaining and recording the data automatically. The rolling texture was described in terms of several "ideal orientations" in which the stronger orientations have either the (1103 or (010) poles in the vicinity of the rolling direction. The recrystallization texture of the sheet uranium was also described by several "ideal orientations" which are somewhat different, except in one case, than the as-rolled "ideal orientations." RESULTS of an X-ray study of the deformation texture in rolled uranium rods were reported by Harris' in which a concentration of (010) and (110) poles was found in the rolling direction. More recently Seymour," Mitchell 'and Rowland,3 and Adam and Stephenson4 reported results obtained on uranium sheet rolled under various conditions of tem- perature and amount of reduction. Since the results of Seymour as opposed to those of the two other groups of investigators are not in full agreement, it seemed justifiable to publish the present data, obtained concurrently with the previously mentioned investigations.'-' The results with rolled and re-crystallized uranium sheet were also included in the paper, since they appear to be more complete than the only previously published texture data on recrystallized sheeL3 In the present investigation great care was taken to maintain complete separation of the reflections from different crystal planes, even in cases where the 20 angles differed from each other by less than

Weston Portable Electrodynamometer The Weston Electrical Instrument Co. of Newark, N. J., believes that problems hitherto considered impossible of solution in the designing of portable electrodynamometers have been solved in its new models. The voltmeter, Model 341, is an instrument' of precision adapted to use on alterating- or direct-current circuits, guaranteed to an accuracy of 0.25 per cent. full-scale value either on direct or alternating-current circuits of any frequency to 133 cycles per second and commercial frequencies even as high as 500 cycles per second with very slight error. The polyphase electrodynamometer, Model 329, is accurate to 0.5 per cent. under the same conditions.; Double ranges are furnished in all instruments of this model. All current ranges can be used for 100 per cent. overload indefinitely without introducing error in Models 310 and 329.

The "free form life," The Wall Street Jourlzal called it. That is what the young people are practicing who have dropped out after successfully completing a college education. The ones described were first-rate students who did not embark on careers but instead selected such nonintellectual jobs as delivering mail, short- order cooking and the like. We couldn't help thinking that it wasn't so long ago, that we had the ideal setup in mining for folks of this persuasion when most college grads were started out as muckers. Actually there isn't much new in this business of doing your own thing. Being a type that takes westerns seriously, we jumped at the chance to catch the rerun of the wide-screen flick "How the West Was Won." There was Jimmie Stewart playing the part of the mountain man, with a canoe full of furs going east down river. Coming west up river, is a settler with his daughters. This mountain man had on his fringed buckskins, his two-year growth of long hair and a tremendous thirst. He had been doing his thing and planned to keep right on doing it. However, one of the pretty settler girls had other ideas. The same fate probably awaits today's individualistic youths.
