Diatomite deposits, the skeletal remains of tiny aquatic plants called diatoms, are found in many parts of the world. Only a few of these deposits are of commercial value. Open pit mining is used in nearly all deposits now being worked. Processing methods range from simple drying, crushing, sizing and packaging to carefully controlled and highly sophisticated calcining and air classification procedures, employing the latest control and testing techniques. The major uses of processed diatomite are infiltration as filter aids and fillers and extenders.

The flow of dry powders through continuous ball mills has been investigated. Based on a physical model of the system, expressions have been derived which relate the holdup of material in the mill and its variation along the length of the mill to the mill dimensions, speed of rotation, material feed rate, and the mill discharge geometry. Experimental results obtained in a small (4 in.) mill using 3/8-in. steel balls and a feed of silicon carbide particles are in good agreement with the prediction of the model.

History.—The making of iron and steel from the ores of northern Mexico was for years a favorite project of the late Don Patricio Milmo, upon whose estate large deposits of coal and iron were known to exist, and with whom Mr. Eugene Kelly, of New York, was associated. Several expert examinations of the property mere made for them; and when failing health forced Sr. Milmo to retire from active part in the matter, Mr. Kelly carried on the project and associated himself with Messrs. Vicente Ferrara, of Monterrey, Antonio Basagoiti and Leon Signoret, of the City of Mexico, and other leading citizens of Mexico, Monterrey and New York, who, in May, 1900, organized the " Compania Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey," with a capital of $10,000,000. The main reason for locating the plant at Monterrey was, that a circle drawn with Monterrey as a center, and the distance from Monterrey to Laredo as a radius, will contain all the known Deposits of iron-ore of Bessemer quality, and the greater part of the available coal, in the Republic. Moreover, Monterrey is connected with all the Mexican trunk railwaylines, and thus with the Gulf of Mexico, and supplies, therefore, the conditions necessary for prosperous manufacturing, namely, cheapness in assembling raw materials and means for wide distribution of product. It also has a number of enterprising citizens, who have been successful in mining, smelting and manufacturing operations, and a sufficiently large population to supply the necessary labor. EXISTING distribution data' for silicon between liquid iron and silver at steelmaking temperatures, 1500" to 1600°C, has made activity relationships in liquid silver-silicon alloys desirable as a method of determining the silicon activity in molten iron. To this end, through the use of radioactive Ag110 and the molecular beam technique described in a previous paper,' the vapor pressure of silver as a function of temperature has been measured over three silver-silicon alloys containing 3.9, 9.3, and 15.4 atomic pct (eutectic composition) silicon. The hot-blast oven of which the accompanying plate gives complete details, was designed by the writer for the spiegel-furnace of the Lehigh Zinc and Iron Co., at Bethlehem, Pa. Members of the Institute who visit these works will have occasion to notice the large amount of zinc-dust in the gases, and the consequent dirtiness of both the hot-blast and the boilers. The zinc collects in a crust on the iron hot-blast pipes and leads to the frequent burning of them. A large vertical standing-pipe stove, a modification of the "Pleyer," thus gave considerable trouble by the burning of pipes and, on one occasion, the toppling over of a whole row. These inconveniences are avoided in the hanging-pipe stove under consideration, and less heating-surface has been found to be required to heat the blast to a given temperature. The construction of the stove is so simple and so plainly shown in the plate that it is needless to enlarge upon it. Each pipe rests in a box and is connected by U-branches with the next adjoining pipes. An iron sleeve is placed around the joint and tightened, as usual, with iron filings. In case of a pipe burning out, that particular section is cut off by the valves and the sleeves are broken. The pipe is then readily lifted out of the box and a new one is substituted. The whole operation requires only a short time and the section can then be at once put into use. The boxes supporting the pipes cover the whole surface of the hot-blast and are closed by iron covers rammed with fire-clay. Owing to the air-space around the U-pipes there is little loss of heat in the upper part of the stove. Each section as built has 280 square feet of heating-surface. The furnace is blown by a horizontal engine with 46-inch stroke and 48-inch diameter of blowing-tube. At 28 to 30 revolutions, the engine delivers 3000 cubic feet of air per minute, at a pressure of 5 pounds. When five sections of stove are in use, the blast enters the furnace at a temperature of 850" F. That is, there are over two cubic feet of air per square foot of heating-surface heated to that temperature per minute.

The effect of grinding media composition, mineral type, and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls) are discussed. Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated. Modes of wear were determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

As successfully pilot-tested at a quarry producing limestone for a large cement plant, swiftly flowing streams of rock enter the Gromax Selector. They are electronically scanned while in motion and light reflection data flashed to logic circuits. The logic circuits compute the total light deviations in each rock as it passes the scanner. Thus, a rock with striated or spotted impurities can be rejected or accepted on the basis of its proportional content. The actual case history of this equipment's development at a limestone quarry in the Southeast serves to illustrate its general area of usefulness.

FoR a number of years an intensive study has been made to improve the blast-furnace practice at Copperhill not only as to cost% but to provide a good grade of gas for the acid plants. This study took us back to the fundamentals of successful pyrite smelting; namely, a blast furnace working on a clean sulfide ore, free from fines, and the use of quartz high in silica as a flux. In 1919, the quality of the flux was improved and its effect on the metallurgy was very marked. To improve the practice further, it was necessary to work out some method of treatment for the sulfide fines and the siliceous and refractory ores, other than in the blast furnace. A series of milling tests indicated that these products could be successfully treated by differential flotation, and in 1922 plans were made and a flotation plant built. It was estimated that the flotation plant would deliver to the smelter 40 to 50 tons of concentrates per day; the problem was what to do with these concentrates. It was out of the question to attempt to smelt them in a blast furnace because of the dust losses and because our practice demands a charge free from fines for satisfactory operation. There is no custom smelter in the vicinity to which concentrates may be sold, pending the time when the tonnage will be sufficient to warrant roasters and a reverbatory furnace. Sintering and nodulizing were investigated but neither method fitted into our scheme of metallurgy. A close study of the converter practice was then made to see if some method could not be evolved to smelt this tonnage of concentrates in a converter without preliminary treatment. At that time, the converter installation consisted of two 12-ft. Great Falls converters, which were handling 12 to 14 per cent. matte. The heat balance of the converters working with 12 to 14 per cent. matte was more than sufficient to smelt the contemplated tonnage of concentrates but the mechanical difficulties of feeding fines into the Great Falls converter made the use of this type of converter impractical. While there was no opportunity to experiment with the Pierce-Smith converter, equipped with a Garr gun, theoretically it seemed practical

May I emphasize that this session is separate from the rest of the program; there is no registration fee; and I want to urge all of you, especially those in this vicinity, to bring your assistants to this meeting. DISCUSSION of a paper is sometimes more in-teresting in what has not been said than in what is said. In the present case the paper is mainly directed to certain thermo-dynamic relation-ships in the blast furnace. Careful reading of the dis-cussion fails to show a single use of the term, heat unit, or its equivalent. If we wish to know very-much about the furnace action it is necessary to count calories or B.t.u. Nothing much is. said about the availability of heat at high temperatures, although it will be generally admitted that in seeking underlying limiting factors in the furnace economy the hearth heat relations offer-the most promising clues. Those discussing the paper, with exceptions of course, apparently have failed to recognize an outstand-ing fact. It is a fact that the heat actually generated by the air oxygen in CO formation (including the blast heat) is in excess, after charging off radiation, etc., by from 70 to .90 per cent over the heat absorbed in melting the iron and slag and calcining the stone reduction by CO absorbing no heat. The fact stands out as plainly as does the fact that the furnace functions largely as a gas producer. The surplus heat is there. It is in the picture. Why not take a look at it, face the fact? That the surplus heat is necessitated by the hearth conditions admits of very little if any doubt. The furnace is really two separate pieces of apparatus: the hearth, doing certain work, and the superimposed shaft, doing certain other work. The combustion of fuel in the hearth, primarily serving the hearth pur-poses, generates much more heat and gas than the shaft requires, or can use, in smelting work. The result is surplus heat makes still more gas in the heat-absorbing reaction between CO, and coke; what is left of the surplus going to top heat. Here we have a simple yet adequate sketch of the furnace action. Having obtained a fairly comprehensive view of the existing heat relations of both hearth and shaft, the way to improvement seems quite plain. Either do more of the work above the hearth or put more heat into the hearth. Since there is already a great surplus of heat above the hearth, probably little needs to be done by way of increasing the proportion of the work done in the shaft. The shaft can, however, probably do much more work than it is now doing provided that a way, can be found to get more work, done in the hearth. The hearth heat is nicely balanced. Losses by radiation and water cooling and other losses are already taken care of. Any increase of hearth heat development could be utilized in taking care of increased smelting work. Aside from the possibility of increased blast heat, there is one sure way of putting more heat into the hearth, and this is to blow more air. And since the shaft already has more gas than it needs, the increased gas resulting from the greater blast volume can be withdrawn from the bosh after it has done its work in the hearth. Now an increase of burden will cool the shaft, cut down solution loss and thereby supply addi-tional coke in the hearth to burn with the additional air blown. The hearth heat per pound of coke charged will be proportionately increased. The balance between hearth and shaft will be better. Gruener's ideal will be more nearly attained, if not exceeded. Most inter-esting of all perhaps, the more the burden is increased, the more coke will reach the hearth and the more burden can be added. The effect is to be cumulative.

DAVID COLE, EL PASO, TEXAS (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with great interest Dr. Gahl's painstaking paper giving us the details of development of flotation at Inspiration, and it seems to me that he has covered the ground so completely that there is little to discuss or criticize in connection with his subject. While it was in operation, the test mill in which the campaign was carried on was the Mecca of mill men and metallurgists. There was much to interest students of milling methods in addition to the flotation experiments, and readers of Dr. Gahl's paper will miss the information they hoped to get when the "pilot" mill results were. finally compiled, and I hope that the following remarks outlining from a distance some of the things that happened there will bring forth the rest of the story of the performances recorded in these important experiments. Prior to the use of flotation methods in concentration it had long been recognized that the "unavoidable" losses of sulphides were in the slime which is inevitably produced in the grinding operations required to free the minerals to be separated. Classifying the feed prior to its final stage of treatment had long been in style in milling. This assisted the sand-handling machines and resulted in lowering the tailings made by them, but at the expense of the slime-handling department; and while little was expected of the latter, the wisdom of complicating the process by hydraulic classification was being seriously questioned. THIS paper reports a study of the reactivity of 950°F and 1650°F cokes as measured by relative rates of reduction of iron oxides at temperatures up to 2200°F. Previous work cited shows general acceptance of the theory that reduction by carbon is a gaseous reaction, and that kind and character of carbon as well as particle size have measurable effect on the velocity of reaction. As will be shown, the data obtained in this study con firm those conclusions. The work was not designed to examine iron oxide reduction equilibrium, but if reaction velocity be defined as the speed with which "a reaction tends to approach conditions of equilibrium," the data here presented may be considered as a study of reaction rates, and the relative degree of reduction to metallic iron as the measure of reactivity.
