You moderns think of your field of work as "Minerals Beneficiation"; to me it always will be "Ore Dressing." While I would like to talk with you on the future of ore dressing rather than the past, I cannot do this because I started to work in the field some 56 years ago, and my future is behind me. It is trite to remind you that then, in 1900, one out of every 30 high school graduates went on to higher education. Today, the figure is one in every three. So that, while you have a lot more men to compete with, the field of opportunity has expanded even more.

MORE than two years ago, in making efficiency tests on our hot-blast stoves, I was surprised to discover a marked difference in temperature as indicated by a pyrometer inserted near a stove on blast, and the regular recording instrument situated near the bustle pipe. A special hole was then provided at the junction of the hot-blast main and the bustle pipe, and portable pyrometers with bare fire ends were used, both at this point and in the stove necks. I had occasion to make a number of such tests on various stoves on the same furnace, the difference in temperature as shown by the two pyrometers varying chiefly with the temperature of the blast, and the distance of the stove from the furnace. However, this difference was always great, often averaging above 100° F., for the entire period of a stove on blast. Later, experiments were made with similar results on another group of stoves. The pyrometers used were properly standardized and checked against each other before and after each test. However, there was still a slight doubt as to the accuracy of the results obtained, as subsequently explained. But I have obtained corroboration of the magnitude of heat losses from blast-furnace hot-blast mains from two independent sources. I have learned from H. A. Brassert, Superintendent of Blast Furnaces, South Works, Illinois Steel Co., that he has recently clone some experimental work similar to my own, and found temperature drops of the same order of magnitude. Also, C. R.. Lyle, of the Armstrong Cork Co., has made some interesting theoretical calculations, based oil the thermal conductivity of fire brick, for the particular conditions of several of our tests; and his theoretical interpolations, all facts being considered, check our actual observations fairly well. I understand that Mr. Lyle expects to publish the results of his investigations.

ANNOUNCEMENT on August 6 of the historic event of dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, was more dramatic even than V-E day, since that had so long been forecast whereas the bomb production had been the best-kept secret of the war, even though at one time more than 100,000 people had been at work in connection with its production, and some two billion dollars had been spent on the project. Mining men had long been aware of an unexplained abnormal interest in uranium production, and suspected that something of the sort was on foot, while metallurgists were aware that various men of their acquaintance were engaged in some top secret research. The first announcement was soon supplemented by other official releases which told more about the research laboratories for theoretical and pilot studies, and the plants in Tennessee and Washington, but none of them made clear what the modus operandi is of these terrific bombs. Inquiry at Colum. bia University, where Dr. Dunning and his associates had succeeded in 1939 in splitting the uranium atom, and where laboratories known only as SAM have been feverishly active since the beginning of the war, was unproductive, since none of those officially connected with the project could give out anything beyond the official releases.

The work that has formerly been done by the Waste-reclamation Section of the War Industries Board has been tranferred to the Department of Commerce and will be continued as the "Waste-reclamation Service" of this Department. The plan contemplates the establishment of a national waste-reclamation system-comprehensively organized, effective and systematic, and animated by a sympathetic understanding of the purposes and principles of the Service. It is the expectation of the Service that the work will be taken over by the several municipalities or other local governments and made permanent through the creation of a department or bureau for the salvage of waste materials. The local Waste-reclamation Council should be composed of representatives of cooperating national organizations, selected by the mayor; or chief executive officer of the city, town, or village. It will be the duty of the Council to inaugurate an educational campaign to conserve materials so as to make less waste, together with a reclamation movement that shall reclaim the residue of waste in the community, thus conserving the resources of the country both in man power and in materials. The most important materials to reclaim at the present time are: paper, steel, copper, wool, iron, brass, cotton, zinc, aluminum, rubber, babbitt metal, tin-foil, lead, tin and leather.

Oil and gas development in Arkansas during the year 1933 has been marked by considerable wildcat drilling, considering the overproduction prevalent in the oil industry. Arkansas showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 45 completions from 10 counties resulting in 7 oil wells and 38 dry holes, compared with 37 completions resulting in 4 oil wells and 33 dry holes during 1932. Miller County continued to be the most active area, with 18 completions resulting in 3 oil wells and 15 dry holes. Recent publicity has focused attention on the hazard of lung cancer among uranium miners. Many mining people feel the danger has been exaggerated. Whether or not this is the case, the industry must thoroughly evaluate this potential hazard and take corrective measures to minimize the threat of radiation after-effects and to maintain the level of radiation in mines within the presently-accepted limit. The measurement and control of radon gas and its solid radioactive decay products, Po-218, Pb-214, Bi- 214, and Po-214, should be the one facet of most concern to uranium miners in any radiation control program. To illustrate the radioactivity involved with small quantities of radon gas, the activity from the decay products of five milliliters of radon gas (imagine a 5-ml vial) would be adequate to raise one cubic mile of air to seven times the recommended maximum working level of 300 [ ] (micro micro curies) per liter. This would be enough radioactivity to raise to the maximum working level a 6 x 8-ft drift which extended around the world 160 times. Obviously, a little radon gas goes a long way.

The annual meeting of the St. Louis Section was held at the St. Louis Club, Saturday evening, Mar. 10, 1917. Philip N. Moore, President, and Bradley Stoughton, Secretary of the Institute, were the guests of the Section. The meeting was preceded by a dinner, at which 70 were present, and was presided over by F. W. DeWolf. Addresses were made by Mr. Moore and Mr. Stoughton. The routine reports of the officers were- presented and the Executive Committee named above was elected for the current year. The special business of the meeting was a report of progress concerning the arrangements for the Institute meeting to be held in the St. Louis Section district, Oct. 8 to 13, 1917. The general program for the meeting met with the cordial approval and cooperation of the members of the Section. Dear Sir: In connection with the official notice of Dr. Raymond's unanimous election by the Directors as Secretary Emeritus, we wish to place upon record certain statements concerning his services to the Institute which we think have not been published., and may not be generally known to the majority of our fellow-members. When the Institute was formed in 1871, Dr. Raymond acted as Secretary of the Founders' Meeting, and became the first Vice-President of the Institute, and, by request of the aged and beloved David Thomas, who was the first President of the Institute, Dr. Raymond discharged all the duties of the office of President, to which he was later formally elected in 1872, and which lip held for three years. During that time, he visited Europe, and through his acquaintance and reputation abroad, established those international relations of the Institute which proved so important in later years. He also enlisted the support of the mining engineers and metallurgists of the Pacific Slope, who would not otherwise have been disposed to join a society originating in the East. And for twelve years he attended; at his own expense, nearly every meeting of the Institute, wherever held, giving to it without remuneration his best service, and sacrificing for it many professional and private interests.

The authors of T.P. 4179 have conducted a large number of experimental water floods, and the data are reported in a very clear manner. These data show significant variations of residual oil saturation with changes in wettability, interfacial tension, flooding rate, and oil-water viscosity ratio. Furthermore, some of the data obtained cover a range of variables not previously reported in the literature. It is our opinion that at least some of the observed variation in oil recovery can be obtained only in floods made under conditions identical with those used by the authors. There are other systems which may be said to have the same wettability, but which exhibit an entirely different qualitative dependence of oil recovery on the experimental variables. In this regard, we would like to direct attention to several items which we feel are not given sufficient consideration in the paper. The first of these items has to do with wetting equilibrium. A survey of the current literature will reveal that little is known, and even less is understood, about wetting equilibrium. This is particularly true of the relation between contact angle measurements made under static conditions, and the wettability existing under the dynamic conditions of floods carried out at relatively high rates. We feel that this is a very important consideration, particularly in the floods the authors performed under what they consider to be "water-wet" conditions. It is our opinion that wetting equilibrium did not exist in these floods, except possibly at the very lowest rates. This opinion is in part based on some flooding tests we have made which are very similar to some of those described by the authors. These floods were made in unconsolidated cores, 6 in. long and 13/4 in. in diameter, made up of carefully graded glass spheres of the approximate size of the sand grains used in the subject paper. The cores were mounted vertically, and distilled water was used to displace a refined oil equivalent to the authors Soltrol C. The glass spheres had previously been carefully cleaned so that they were strongly wet by the water. The floods were made with and without an interstitial water saturation. When interstitial water was present, the solid surfaces were mostly covered with water prior to injecting the flooding phase. Consequently, a condition very near wetting equilibrium existed throughout the flood. The data in Fig. A show that under these eircumstances, rate had no influence on residual oil at flood-out, over the range of rates studied. On the other hand, in the absence of interstitial water, the surfaces are all covered with oil before the displacement. To achieve wetting equilibrium the injected water must displace the oil from the surfaces themselves. This is not a fast process. Therefore, the effective dynamic wetting condition in floods of this type must depend upon the flooding rate. When the flood rate is very low, compared to the rate at which wetting equilibrium is attained, the residual oil saturation at flood-out is essentially the same as the residual obtained when interstitial water is present. This is shown in Fig. A, and occurs because the dynamic wetting conditions are the same in both cases. However, at moderately high flooding rates, the rate has an important bearing on the amount of oil recovered because in this case the attainment of surface equilibrium is the slow step. We believe that, in the absence of an interstitial water saturation, oil recovery varies with rate because of the reasonably slow approach to wetting equilibrium which occurs during the displacement. In fact, as the rate is increased, the oil recovery performance indicates the core is becoming progressively less water-wet. At the highest rate there is even considerable simultaneous production of oil and water after breakthrough. This does not occur at the lower flooding rates, nor is there appreciable simultaneous oil and water produc-
