In deposits in which the secondary zones are well defined a layer of rich oxidized ore is frequently found immediately to overlie the enriched sulphides, from which it is derived by direct oxidation in place. In deposits that contain oxidizing precipitants particles and masses of residual oxidized ore are likely to be scattered through the leached zone, having been precipitated during migration before reaching the zone of enrichment. This precipitation hinders secondary enrichment and in extreme cases prevents the formation of such concentrations. Residual ores are precipitated by various reagents. Carbonates are formed through the action of the carbonic acid contained in surface waters, and also directly through the replacement of calcite, especially where the containing rock is limestone. Native metals, such as copper, gold, and silver, are formed by the action of reducing agents, among which organic matter and ferrous sulphate are prominent. Kaolin, gouge, and certain shales occasionally act as powerful precipitants through adsorption. Silver is often found as residual chloride, formed through precipitation by the chlorine contained in surface waters. Residual ores are often the result of incomplete solution, the relatively insoluble minerals being left behind during the migration of associated metals; incomplete oxidation and solution often leave residual masses of unaltered, or partly altered, sulphides in the oxidized zone. Such residual particles or masses have commonly been enriched by additions from circulating, metal-bearing solutions. PACKARD, Butte, Mont.:-I would like to ask Mr. Braly if he has any information as to the relative efficiency of the sinking pump, using it as he refers to it, discharging the exhaust into the water column or otherwise. MR. BRALY :-I have never gathered any information on that point. It is a question of getting the work done. In driving the shaft, using that method, we find it easier on the men and everything else. In the bottom of the shaft, if you exhaust back into your column, it is a quiet. shaft. Another thing is the freezing: if you are sinking with air in your pump, you will find it is liable to freeze, and in that case as the air is still under compression it will not freeze the pump. The difference is very small if there is any. But, as might be expected, the pump is a little less efficient when exhausting the air into the column. MR. PACKARD :-I suppose all of us know what a pump in the bottom of the shaft is. My experience has been, although I have no figures, that the capacity of a pump is quite considerably decreased if you are pumping, say, from a depth of 200 ft. through a No. 7 Knowles pump, when you exhaust the air into a column, but, on the other hand, it is also my impression that we can raise the water to a little greater distance. I would like to get some figures from somebody who has made actual tests.

Since 1964. Newmont Mining Corp. has been engaged in a systematic research and development of computer techniques for a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective of this effort has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody and, second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of Newmont's computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the computer's ability to duplicate manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. Obviously, all recognized geologic characteristics had to be included, and consequently the development of computer techniques for the proper incorporation of structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one.

Accident cost data bases for all mining sectors covering the period 1975 through 1980 have been created on the PDP-11/70 and VAX-11/780 computers at the Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center. The total expected costs of the following tangible elements are computed: (a) loss in personal income; (b) compensation of wages from State, Federal, and union funds for disabling injuries; (c) benefits for injuries resulting in death or permanent disability; (d) medical treatment and hospital care; (e) investigation of a fatal accident; and (f) production loss due to accidents involving fatalities or amputation injuries. Each cost record computed contains a reference to the original record in the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) accident files to permit concurrent analysis. The intended applications include examinations of annual trends in mine accident statistics on the basis of economic loss. This provides an additional perspective on mine accidents. Various examples of the use of these data bases are presented.

MEXICO SEEKS TO AVOID BLAME FOR BANDIT RAIDS All foreign passengers leaving Nogales for Mexico on the Southern Pacific or Mexico Railroad. whose business would take them through territory occupied by the Yaqui Indians or Mexican bandits were requested by Mexican Consul Emilio Tamez to sign a statement that they relieve the Mexican government of responsi-bility for anything which might happen to them while in that part of Mexico. The Mexican consul stated, says the N. Y. Tribune, that this was by order of Mexican Ambassador Ignacio Bon ill as, at Washington. When the State Department was advised of this activity Secretary Phillips, in a message to the consulate at Tampico, according to the N. Y. Tribune, asserted that "compliance with the waiver requirement will not interfere with the relation existing between the United States and its citizens and that Americans so complying will in no way lose the protection of this government."

In addition to projects such as those reported in parts I and II above, the Section of Geo-physics of the Federal Government has undertaken a considerable amount of fundamental research. Two such field-projects may be mentioned, one a magnetometric study in the Comstock Dis-trict of Nevada, and the other a resistivity-study of snow and ice. In addition to the field-problems, there have been two classes of research of a mathematical type. One of these has been the preparation of tables, scales, and charts for the important geophysical functions already known; the other has been the extension of the relations involved in the resistivity-problem. The magnetometric study at Spring Valley, in the Comstock District, was made for the pur-pose of determining the value of the magnetometer in extending the knowledge of a region, as ob-tained by purely geological means. The variations in the vertical magnetic intensity were mea-sured with an Askania balance at intervals of 20 feet, along lines as shown in Figure I.. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Because of the potential for large reserves from increased production in the eastern Devonian shales, the Department of Energy (DOE), Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) selected these materials for the application and evaluation of existing and novel well stimulation techniques. One technique selected for further study was pulse tailoring, or tailored pulse loading, i.e., shaping the input borehole pressure history to produce a specific fracture pattern and to increase communication with the reservoir. The complexity and expense of in-situ mineback experiments prohibits direct evaluation of pulse tailoring in various geologic formations. An alternative approach used by SRI International consisted of evaluating fracture enhancement by computational simulations with supporting laboratory experiments and using data from field tests by other agencies to validate the computational model (McHugh and Keough, 1980). Laboratory experiments were conducted on core samples to determine fracture phenomenology and parameters and to verify material properties. The fracture parameters were obtained from posttest measurements of fracture distributions and correlation with stresses calculated by a wave propagation code. Model development was guided by these experiments and similar experiments in various materials performed by other agencies. The validity of the modeling, parameters, and scaling was evaluated by comparing fracture patterns from field tests with calculational simulations.

High capacity off-highway haulage trucks equipped with electric wheel drives have been available for commercial applications since 1963 and, although still interesting to study, cannot be considered as a "new" type of equipment any longer. However, the electric wheel drive components which played a key role in the development of these trucks has indirectly led to another new trucking development-the gas turbine engine for off -highway vehicles. Although most of the production models of the electric-wheel haulage trucks are equipped with 700 hp engines (the largest production engine commonly available), the electric drive components of the motorized wheel were designed to transmit more than 700 hp. To utilize this added potential, 1000-hp class diesel engines are in the process of being developed, but progress has been much slower than expected. The delay has caused some engineering thoughts to concentrate on the adaptation of the 1000-hp gas turbine engines, originally designed for aircraft applications, for use in haulage trucks. The question in most minds centered around the ability of such an engine to withstand the tough usage expected of it in an open pit.

The petition for the formation of a Tulsa Section was granted. The final budget for the year 1917, and the tentative budget for the year 1918, were adopted. The Secretary was instructed to continue to send the Bulletin to all members whose dues have been remitted on account of their being in the war service, but to hold the Transactions and send them on request to the address furnished for the purpose. The issues of the Bulletin were presented to the Federal Fuel Administration, at its request, with the compliments of the Institute. Fifty-nine Members, five Associates, and fifteen Junior Members were elected. The resignation of one member was accepted. The clues of four members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. An extension of time for the payment of clues was granted to four members, upon request.
