THE present investigation has three principal purposes: I. To develop a method for measuring hydrogen embrittlement that avoids certain errors complicating previously used methods. 2. To explore in a preliminary way some of the fundamental factors controlling embrittlement. 3. To apply the measurements specifically to stainless grades of steel, whose sensitivity or insensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement has never been clearly defined. SELECTING A TEST METHOD Hydrogen embrittlement is a condition of low ductility resulting from excessive absorption of hydrogen by the steel at some period in its history, and may be revealed by almost any test involving cold deformation. Tensile tests, impact tests, and bend tests are commonly used for detecting hydrogen embrittlement; although numerous other tests, such as cold-upsetting or extrusion, could be used. The simplicity of using a wire specimen for cathodic and acid pickling tests, and the especial adaptability of the bend test to wire specimens, led to selection of the bend test for the present research. Bend tests usually have been of three general types: (I) fatigue, (2) reversed bend, and (3) single bend. The first two types, though widely used, are inaccurate because their measurements are counteracted by an aging effect; and the third type has not been developed to its fullest utility. The effect of cold-working in removing hydrogen is well known. During a bend test hydrogen can be observed escaping from the convex side simply by coating the specimen with oil; and any technique employing flexing or reverse bending may therefore have its measurements masked because the mechanical action reduces the embrittlement during the test. This factor is so important that even elastic flexing of a hydrogen-charged wire specimen should be avoided before testing if accurate measurements are desired. DEVELOPING A MACHINE FOR MEASURING HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT As for the single-bend test, its theory is good, and recovery caused by mechanical work is kept to a minimum. With a given degree of hydrogen embrittlement, a specimen will break at a given angle if the bending is applied unidirectionally and uniformly. The radius of the bend must be kept constant; and the rate of bending should be a constant, slow enough to allow reading of the breaking angle, and yet rapid enough to prevent significant recovery from the escape of hydrogen during bending. Using the same experimental method previously described, the activity of sulfur in a number of quaternary and more complex liquid iron alloys at 1550oC is determined. OUR recent papers 1,2 have described new determinations of the activity of sulfur in Fe-S binary and Fe-S-j ternary solutions, but the practical applications of these data require the estimation of activity of sulfur in more complex systems. Previously, Sherman and chipman3 devised an approximate method for calculating the activity of sulfur in complex systems by summing the contributions to the logarithm of the activity coefficient of each element in the alloy. This procedure is more successful, as one of us has pointed out,4 when the concentration variable is taken as zs = ns/(nFe — nS t CLJ~ nj) rather than the conventional atom fraction x~ = nS/(nF, + nS + Enj). In the former definition, which is based on analogy to interstitial solutions, the value assigned to uj is normally +1 for metallic and -1 for nonmetallic elements." In addition, however, the effects of mutual interaction between alloying elements must be considered for the accurate estimation of the activity of sulfur in more complex systems. The purpose of this investigation has been to devise a more reliable method for estimating the activity coefficient of sulfur in nmIticomponent iron alloys. The measurements were carried out on some quaternary systems Fe-S-j-k for combinations of silicon, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten. Manganese was not included since the experimental method has been found unsatisfactory for volatile, sulfide-forming elements. The experimental method was the same in every detail as described previously. 1,2 The concentrations of sulfur, silicon, chromium, and copper in the quenched metals were determined by chemical analysis but those of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten were calculated from charged amounts. Iron sulfide was included in the charges in amounts estimated to furnish approximately the final sulfur content. CALCULATION W2 have shown2 that when zs and zj are the concentration variables in a ternary Fe-S-j solution the logarithm of the activity coefficient S = a~/zg is a linear function of the variables as and aj defined as follows:

The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,' it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. Experimental results on the oxidation reaction kinetics in the forward combustion oil recovery process are presented. A total of 48 runs were made wherein a stationary thin layer of coked, unconsoli-dated sand was burned isothermally in a combustion cell. Individual runs were made at various temperature levels to permit determination of the effect of temperature upon the reaction. An expression was obtained for the burning rate of carbon as a function of carbon concentration, combustion temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The carbon burning rate for two types of crude oil indicated a first order reaction with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. The effect of combustion temperature on the reaction rate constant matched the Arrhenius equation. The activation energy was similar for the two crude oils examined. The activation energy decreased for a porous media containing clay. The rate of oxidation of crude oil at reservoir temperature was found to be significant. Other significant findings included information on hydrogen-carbon content of fuel residues, fuel reactivity and the products of combustion. INTRODUCTION The production of crude oil by underground combustion has been studied in the laboratory by many investigators.1-5 Results of laboratory and field experiments have been reported in the literature describing the forward combustion process. But as yet, no qualitative or quantitative study of the kinetics of fuel combustion involved in this process has been reported. The fuel concentration and the rate at which fuel is burned at the front are important factors governing the air requirement in a forward combustion operation. Although the fuel is essentially unrecoverable crude, the air required to burn the fuel is an important economic factor in this process. Because fuel is burned, the heat transport associated with forward combustion is a key and unique feature of this new oil recovery method. Many investiga-tors5-9 have presented information on the heat transmission and fluid mechanics involved in forward combustion. Berry and Parrish10 demonstrated the utility of considering reaction kinetics in reverse burning. From differential thermal analysis, Tadema11 presented a qualitative discussion of the nature of reactions between oil and oxygen in combustion oil recovery. Although little quantitative work has been done on the reaction kinetics involved in forward combustion oil recovery, an extensive literature does exist on combustion of carbons and oils, and carbonaceous residues from cracking catalyst pellets. Dart, et al., 12 studied the combustion rate for oxidation of carbonaceous residues on clay catalyst pellets, and found the reaction to be second-order with respect to carbon concentration, and first-order with respect to oxygen partial pressure for carbon concentrations less than 2 weight percent of the catalyst weight. The reaction appeared to be first-order with respect to carbon concentration for concentrations greater than 2 percent. Metcalfe13 noted that other workers had found that aging of the fuel during the combustion process was responsible for changing coke properties, and it accounted for the apparent second-order carbon concentration effect found by Dart, et al. It appears that burning of residues from cracking pellets is first-order with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. Dart, et al., also observed that hydrogen in the hydrocarbon residue appeared to react faster than the carbon. Lewis, et al.,14 studied oxidation of charcoal, coke and graphite in a fluidized bed. Gas velocities were high enough to partially lift and circulate the carbon particles. Their results indicated first-order reaction dependency with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. One

THE Duluth gabbro outcrops containing sulphides of copper, nickel, and iron are located on both sides of State Highway No. 1 an airline distance of 8.5 miles southeast of Ely in northeastern Minnesota. The region of known sulphide occurrences includes parts of sections 5, T. 61 N., R. 11 W., and parts of sections 25, 26, 32, 33, and 34, T. 62 N., R. 11 W. These sections, given in Fig. 1, are all in Lake County, Minnesota. Part of the area, which lies entirely within the Superior National Forest, is shown on the topographic map of the Ely quadrangle. The original discovery was made in 1948 when a small pit was opened in weathered gabbro rubble for use on a forest access road. A shear zone had caused unusual decomposition in this glaciated area, and the resulting copper stain was noted by Fred S. Childers, Sr., an Ely prospector, who began searching the outcrops along the base of the intrusive. He was joined in further exploration by Roger V. Whiteside of Duluth. In the summer of 1951 a small diamond drill was moved into the area and a hole 188 ft deep was drilled, passing through 11 ft of glacial drift into sulphide-bearing gabbro. This paper is a preliminary report on the geology of the newly discovered ore. The Duluth gabbro is one of the largest known basic intrusives and may be defined as a lopolith.1 It extends northeastward from the city of Duluth as a great crescent-shaped mass that intersects the shore of Lake Superior again near Hovland, 130 miles to the northeast, see Fig. 2. The distance around the outside of the crescent is nearly 170 miles. The form of the intrusive is simple at Duluth where it ends abruptly north of the St. Louis River; at the east end, however, the gabbro splits into two elongated, sill-like masses separated mainly by lava flows and characterized by minor irregularities. The outcrop reaches a maximum width in the central part where it is about 30 miles across, and a maximum thickness of about 50,000 ft. It may be significant that the sulphides occur at the base of the thickest part. The lopolith has segregated into rock types ranging from peridotite to granite. The most abundant types are olivine gabbro, gabbro, troctolite, anorthosite, and granite. Of lesser importance quantitatively are peridotite, norite, pyroxenite, magnetite gabbro, and titaniferous magnetite. Grout estimates that two-thirds of the gabbro at Duluth is olivine gabbro. Variations in the percentages of plagioclase, augite, olivine, and magnetite-ilmenite constitute the only essential differences found among the basic rock types. The predominant mineral is plagioclase, mainly labradorite. Plagioclase and olivine seem to have crystallized early, and the olivine rich rocks, usually troctolite, are found in the lower part. Segregations of titaniferous magnetite are abundant near the base of the gabbro along the eastern part and also occur far above the base. These have recently been described in detail by Grout' Near the top, segregation has produced a gradation to granite, or "red rock," as it is known locally. This consists of quartz, red feldspar, and hornblende. The red rock forms a. zone with a maximum width of nearly 5 miles but is quantitatively unimportant from Duluth northward for 35 miles. In Cook county, where the gabbro splits, each of the two sill-like masses has a red rock top somewhat thicker in proportion to the gabbro below than in the main central mass. The intrusive ranges from coarse to medium in grain size and from granitoid to diabasic in texture. Throughout much of the Duluth gabbro in Minnesota banding and foliation are well developed, as Grout has emphasized! The bands are mainly a result of variation in the percentage of minerals, as in troctolite with alternating bands high in olivine and in plagioclase. A few bands may consist largely of one mineral, as is true of some segregations of magnetite. Many of the banded rocks show a clearly developed parallelism of platy plagioclase crystals, and both banding and foliation are believed to conform to the floor of the lopolith. Throughout its extent in Minnesota the Duluth gabbro dips east and south toward Lake Superior. It is generally believed to extend beneath Lake Superior and is found as a smaller mass exposed along the north side of the Gogebic district in Wisconsin and Michigan. The dip at and near the base ranges along most of its length from 20 to 40°, but at places the internal banding dips even more steeply. The dip of the upper part is much less, and if it is assumed that the flows along the north shore of Lake Superior are a dependable indication, it does not exceed 15º. The formations shown in Table I which are intruded by the gabbro range from Keewatin to Middle Keweenawan in age. They present a significant picture. At the top, the gabbro and its accompanying

Performance of a pilot flood in eastern Kansas indicates improved recovery and accelerated production resulting from mobility ratio control obtained by adding a high moleculur weight polymer to injected water. Ultimate pilot flood recovery of the 75-cp reservoir oil is anticipated to he 350 bbllacre-ft during the six-year flood life. Cumulative recovery to date totals 242 bbl/acre-ft after 30 months of injection. Reservoir parameters and flood performance are disc~rssed in detail to provide a case history relating to the feasibility of polymer flooding. INTRODUCTION The Vernon Polymer flood of the Brazos Oil & Gas Co., located in Sec. 2, 24 S., 16 E., Woodson County, Kans., was begun in late Oct., 1963. Injection of a 500 ppm solution of Pusher* polymer was initiated in a 15-acre pilot to determine feasibility of improving oil recovery by mobility ratio control. Performance to date and the anticipated recovery of 115,000 bbl from the 329 acre-ft pilot indicate efficient displacement of the viscous reservoir oil. Dependence of flood recovery on the displacing fluid-displaced oil mobility ratio has long been recognized. Displacement efficiency of the reservoir oil decreases with increasing mobility ratio. Therefore, economic reduction of this parameter is an attractive approach to improving oil recovery. particularly from viscous oil reservoirs where mobility ratios are often quite high. Waterflood mobility ratios can be controlled by dilute solutions of certain polymers'; which provide a displacing fluid with considerably reduced mobility. Reservoir parameters and flood performance are emphasized in this paper to provide data relating to polymer flood applicability. THEORY The polymer used in the Vernon pilot exhibits the property of unusually high resistance to flow through porous media.'.' A small concentration in injected water effects a mobility reduction considerably beyond that predicted from increases in bulk viscosity as measured in a capillary or rotating cup viscosimeter. Water mobility in the subject flood is reduced by a factor of 7.55 with the addition of 500 ppm Pusher chemical to injected water while the bulk viscosity is increased from 1.03 to only 1.40 cp at 75F. The exact flow mechanism causing resistance to flow has not been established; however, it is observed only in tortuous flow systems and appears to be influenced by brine properties, rock properties and oil saturation. Consequently, mobility reduction is estimated from flow studies for a given sample of reservoir rock and is expressed in terms of a "resistance factor".' This parameter is defined as the ratio of brine mobility to polymer solution mobility measured at residual oil saturation: RF= ?m/?p= (km/µm)/(kp/µp)M.......(1) where RF = resistance factor (dimensionless) k*. and A, = mobility of water and polymer solution, respectively k,,, and k,, = water and polymer permeability, respectively (darcies) µie and µp = viscosity of water and polymer, respectively (poise). Eq. 1 is similar to the expression commonly used to relate the relative mobility of the water bank at residual oil saturation to oil-bank mobility at irreducible water saturation: where M =mobility ratio of water to oil (dimension-less) A, = mobility of oil k, = permeability to oil (darcies) )i* = oil viscosity (poise). From Eqs. 1 and 2 it is apparent that the polymer-solution-to-oil-mobility ratio can be approximated by dividing the brine-to-oil ratio by the resistance factor RF: Mpn=M10/RF...........(3) where M,-, = mobility ratio of polymer solution to oil (dimensionless). This simplified presentation assumes no dilution of the polymer solution by connate water. Also, the presence of a connate water bank separating the polymer solution from the displaced oil is not considered. Displacement of oil by waterflooding is increasingly dominated by viscous forces as the viscosity of the oil displaced increases. When the oil mobility is less than that of the injected water, the oil-water interface is not a piston-like front.3,' Instead, instabilities occur at the flood front in the form of viscous fingers which tend to penetrate the less mobile oil bank. Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in nonmetallic mining with limited financial risk-if properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgments are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate, and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources. Basic Reasons to Establish a Limestone Quarry Profit Motive: Certainly the dominant and overriding motive must be that of attaining a reasonable profit. In certain situations a quarry firm may acquire land, necessary rezoning (if required), and satisfy all of the other prerequisites preparatory to beginning operations but delaying the actual development.

THE results published in Professor Howe's paper 10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels 11 containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by' the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to -0.1 sec. for recording .time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12. The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5/8 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thereto-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by, platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

INTRODUCTION The Overseas Private Investment Corporation ("OPIC") is a U.S. Government agency mandated to promote the economic development of the less developed countries ("LDCs") by assisting U.S. private investment in the Third World. Generally, investment decisions turn on the optimism or pessimism of the private sector's financial analysis of a project, with market price of product a major unknown in a very chancy set of projections. Discussions with American mineral companies, however, show that, more often than not, in developing country projects it is the political risks of investing in mineral exploration and extraction that pose the most serious deterrent to investment. In several of the projects described here, investments would not have been made if OPIC had not been involved providing support to the project sponsors and their funding sources. Clearly it is not OPIC's business to promote U.S. investment in a project which is not commercially viable, but OPIC's programs can neutralize the political uncertainties which act as disincentives to investment in otherwise commercially viable projects. That is to say, OPIC's programs are designed to reinforce market decisions and not distort them. Although OPIC is an independent agency of the U.S. Government, it is managed by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom come from the private sector. This, coupled with the statutory requirement that it be self-sustaining and operate with due regard for the principles of prudent risk management, requires that it operate on a business-like basis. Although established as a development agency, to the business public OPIC is both an insurance company and a lending institution, with two major programs which are available to U.S. investors in the minerals sector: its political risk insurance program and its finance program. Each has been specially tailored to the meet needs of the mining industry. The insurance program provides coverage against four basic types of political risk: Currency Inconvertibility, Expropriation, loss caused by War, Revolution and Insurrection and Interference with Operations as a result of an act of War, Revolution or Insurrection. Coverage against the risks of Civil Strife can be added to both War, Revolution and Insurrection coverage and Interference with Operations. Inconvertibility coverage provides protection against a deterioration in an investor's ability to convert local currency into U.S. dollars. This deterioration can be the result of either active or passive delays. Active delays consist of a change in exchange laws or regulations that leads to inconvertibility delays of 30 days or more. For example, if the exchange regulations at the time of contract execution allow an investor to transfer earnings equal to 18% of its registered capital per annum and the government of the host country later changes the law to allow conversion of only 12%, the insured would convert the 12% transferable under the new exchange regulations with the government foreign exchange authorities, delivering the remaining 6% to OPIC for conversion at 99% of the then prevailing rate of exchange. (OPIC does not cover devaluation risks.) Upon delivery of the local currency to OPIC, normally at the U.S. Embassy in the project country, the insured's account in the U.S. would be credited with dollars. Delays can also result from what is termed passive blockage, which includes administrative delays of more than 60 days (sometimes longer) caused by the bureaucratic tie-ups or pigeonholding of transfer requests, as well as delays suffered simply because the government of the host country does not have sufficient foreign exchange. The transfer procedure is the same as with active blockage - the local currency is delivered to OPIC in the project country and OPIC provides dollars in the United States at the then prevailing rate of exchange. Precipitation of cementite plates from carbon-rich austenite gives rise to localized formation of martensite in the matrix next to the precipitate upon quenching. The growth of this martensite is urmsually restricted. A distinct lattice relationship is found between this martensite and the cementite phase. It is concluded that the martensite is nacleated in the region of lowest carbon concentration at the austenite-cementite integace, with low-energy matching to the cementite lattice. The restriction of the growth of the martensite phase to the vicinity of the cementite plates can be explained by misfit in the austenite -martensite glissile interface and the uphill carbon gradient in the austenite. The investigation was carried out by light- and electron-microscopy and by electron-diffraction of thin foils. THE precipitation of cementite from carbon-rich austenite gives rise to a localized formation of martensite in the matrix next to the precipitate upon quenching. This behavior has been described previously by A. B. Greninger and A. R. Troiano1 for a 1.78 pct C steel ("pseudomorphic martensite"), and by A. Hultgren2 for a Fe-0.99 pct C—5.20 pct Mn steel. By measuring the axial ratio of the martensite phase,' it was found that the carbon content of this martensite was lower than that of the martensite which formed without prior partial transformation to cementite. Therefore, it was concluded that lowering of the carbon concentration in the matrix next to the precipitate raised the M, temperature locally and thus led to nucleation of martensite at the ce-mentite-austenite interface. However, the restriction of the growth of the martensite phase to the vicinity of the cementite plates cannot be explained by localized carbon impoverishment alone. Under ordinary conditions a martensite plate which has been nucleated in a favorable site can continue to grow until it encounters a physical barrier, or until it encounters a compositional barrier in the matrix, where the total free-energy change for the reaction is not negative, since it has been shown by numerous experiments that the activation energy for growth of ordinary martensite is virtually zero.' An investigation was conducted by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction to study this extraordinary martensite. It was expected that crystallographic in addition to compo- sitional conditions caused this abnormal mode of martensite formation. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE An Fe-C-Mn alloy containing 1.15 pct C and 5.1 pct Mn was used for most of the experiments. For metallographic work, specimens 15 by 15 by 3 mm were used. For preparation of thin films, the initial specimen size was 15 by 15 by 0.7 mm. The heat treatment of each specimen consisted of austenitizing for 1/2hr at 1100'~ in an argon atmosphere, subsequent isothermal holding in a lead bath at one of a series of different temperatures, and, finally, quenching into brine at room temperature. For metallographic examination, the specimens were mounted in bakelite (slight tempering effects resulted from the heat in the mounting press) ground, polished, and etched in nital. Thin films for transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction were obtained by grinding the specimens to approximately 0.2 mm thickness and subsequent electrolytical thinning. The orientation relationships were evaluated from sets of electron micrographs and selected-area electron diffraction patterns of single units of the transformation products and the adjacent matrix. Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. In the subsequent discussion the following notation is used: v = mean velocity of fluid in duct, feet per second. v' = mean velocity of fluid in duct, meters per second. An investigation has been made of nitrogen absorption by the lattice defects in a low-carbon steel afte~ Plastic deformation. Specimens in which defects were distributed by various combinations of cold rolling and vacuum heat treatment were equilibrated with controlled ammonia + hydrogen mixtures at 300° to 450°C to study the relation between the solubility and the thermodynamic activity of nitrogen. The results are interpreted in terms of nitrogen being absorbed upon two different types of defect sites, called A sites and B sites. The concentrations of these sites are calculated for specimens with various histories of straining and annealing; and the thermodynamic relations descrihing the equilibrium distribution of nitrogen among the A, B, and ordinary interstitial sites in ferrite are evaluated as follows: THE generalization that the solute atoms in a solid solution interact with imperfections in the solvent lattice is now universally recognized and the subject of an extensive literature. All types of imperfections—point, line, or surface—exhibit these interactions, but the relative importance of each type depends upon its concentration, the strength of its interaction with the particular solute atom, and whether the interaction is attractive or repulsive. The strength and sign of the interaction vary with the vectorial displacement of the solute atom from the imperfection in the crystal. The concentration of lattice defects increases during plastic deformation and the effect of the imperfections upon the solute atoms is usually perceived only after cold work or irradiation. Two experimental methods have previously been used to observe the effects of interaction between nitrogen atoms and lattice imperfections in a iron. Internal friction, which was first used for this purpose by Dijkstra,1 has been applied more often than the electrical-resistivity method of Cottrell and Churchman.2 The method of the present investigation has not been used before.* Uniform specimens of steel with a metastable defect structure are produced by cold rolling and subsequent heat treatment below the recrystallization temperature. Variations in the defect structure are obtained by varying the amount of strain and the heat-treatment conditions. The specimens are then saturated with nitrogen at moderately elevated temperatures in ammonia + hydrogen mixtures having various thermodynamic activities of nitrogen below saturation with Fe4N. From the nitrogen contents of analyzed samples, the metastable equilibria of interactions between the defects and nitrogen can be established and the concentration of sites for nitrogen atoms in the lattice defects calculated. A steel was used in the present experiments instead of purified iron or iron alloys because the amount of nitrogen absorbed at defects is larger in the steel over a much wider range of experimental conditions and could therefore be measured more accurately. The effect of alloy composition is discussed in Part II of this paper; it is sufficient to say here that impurities and phase heterogeneity in ferritic alloys favor the generation and/or retention of larger defect concentrations during plastic deformation and annealing at 300° to 500°C. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental specimens were prepared from stock of a low-carbon steel, which will be called "X steel" here, with the composition: C, 0.12 pct; Mn, 0.43 pct; P, 0.010 pct; S, 0.034 pct; Si, 0.007 pct; As, 0.086 pct; Cu, 0.022 pct; Ni, 0.009 pct; Cr, 0.003 pct. The stock was all from a single ingot made by the basic open-hearth process, which was hot-rolled to strip 0.080 in. thick.. This hot-rolled strip, given the code designation "XH", was the starting material for preparing a series of cold-rolled sheets. The latter are designated "XC27",

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

EFFORTS at smoke abatement date back to the year 1273 in England when a law was passed prohibiting the use of "sea cole." The law was not enforced, so King Edward I, 33 years later, appointed a commission "to enquire of all such who burnt sea cole in the city or parts adjoining, and to punish them for first offense with great fines and ransomes, and for the second offense to demolish their furnaces." Many other commissions have since been named to investigate the smoke problem in England, but it still persists in many British cities. In the United States the movement to abate the smoke nuisance started in certain Middle Western cities, and has made considerable progress. Until recently, the coal-producing industry co-operated little in smoke¬abatement programs, taking the attitude that smoke elimination is the dealer's or user's responsibility; and the dealers, in turn placed the responsibility entirely on the user.
