I would like to call the attention of our Bessemer steel manufacturers to a few facts in regard to the action of the manganese in the spiegel with the oxide of iron in the blown iron. The oxygen is united with the iron as a magnetic oxide, as Gautier asserts, and this oxide is reduced to a protoxide by one atom of the manganese uniting with one atom of the oxygen of the magnetic oxide of iron. This oxide of manganese and the protoxide of iron thus formed unite with the silica which has been formed by the oxidation of the silicon in the pig iron. Mr. Snelus and others

The Velvet uranium mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The uranium ore body lies within the lower Triassic Chinle Formation, and the ore is associated with west-south- westerly trending fluvial sand systems. Exploration and mining are directed by longhole drilling and radiometric sampling. Results of the gamma probing, face scanning, and geologic mapping guide mining decisions and planning. Three people are directly involved with the geologic procedures: two geologists and a mine supervisor. The two geologists map, do rib scans, and direct longhole drilling. The third man involved, the mine supervisor, has last minute directive action based on shot hole probe data.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences. Although the meeting of the Institute in St. Louis Will not occur until September, 1917, the committee in charge is already making attractive plans, and we append hereto a tentative skeleton program which will give some notion of the opportunities that will be offered: St. Louis is situated in the midst of. a district which contains not only a great many interesting examples of mining, but also all types of industrial manufacture of interest to members of the Institute, and it affords abundant opportunities to visit and see these plants. Further announcement will be made from time to time as the committee's plans take more permanent shape. .

The Institute of Metals Division and the American Foundrymen's Association will meet in Philadelphia Sept. 29 to Oct. 4. Many things of interest to the members of the Institute have been constructed and developed in the Philadelphia district since the last meeting in that city (1907), including the great plant at Hog Island, the new foundries at the League Island Navy Yard and the great foundries of the Westing-house Company at Essington. Invitations are being extended to foundrymen and industrial engineers generally in. England, France, Belgium, Italy, and other European countries, South American countries and Australia, to attend this convention, since the time. seems unusually opportune for holding a meeting of international scope.

A Report Of Current Activity In The Industry

The new Inspiration copper smelter, which introduced unique technological innovations to the copper industry, required a plant material handling system to match. The system has been designed to convey such diverse bulk materials as copper concentrates, copper precipitates, lime, limestone, silica, flue dust, and revert materials. The moisture content in the materials varies from bone dry to a maximum of 25%. Since the summer of I974 when the smelter went into operation, the material handling system ha provided satisfactory and dependable services.

Francis Drake, Bulawayo, Rhodesia, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary *):—I should like to place on record some data in addition to those given by Mr. Canby in his paper. I regret that my notes have been destroyed so that I can give no accurate measurements of the water jacket that I am about to describe. This furnace mas erected in Cerro Gordo, Inyo county, Cal., early in 1875, and I think it quite possible that it was the first applied in lead smelting. It was made of plate iron and elliptic in shape, the inner dimensions being about 54 by 42 in. by 48 in. high. The distance between the inner and outer plates was about 6 in. Tuyere holes, one at the back and two on each side, about 12 in. in diameter, were made in this, and in these were placed cast-iron water tuyeres about 16 in. long, the diameter of the blast orifice at the point being about 3 in. The height from tuyeres to feed door was about 9 ft., but the top of the charge was kept about 5 ft. above the tuyeres. There was a space of about 12 in. between the jacket and the top brick-work. This brick-work was supported by a cast-iron plate resting on four cast-iron columns. At the beginning, the jacket was lined with air-dried radial bricks, made of crushed quartz and fire-clay, as it was thought that the jacket would not stand the heat on its bare plates. After a short time the practice was altered and no lining mas put in. The jacket was closed at the top and had a steam drum connected by two pipes at the back. This steam drum was connected to the boiler in which the steam was made for driving the Baker blower, the rock breaker and the pumps. The bottom of the jacket mas also connected to the boiler. The jacket was run under boiler pressure (80 Ib.) for some time, but eventually cracks developed in the inner plate between the tuyere holes,
