THE future of the steelmaking industry of the Birmingham, Ala., district is closely related to and, in a large measure, dependent on the development of workable, economic processes of ore concentration. Operations thus far in the area have been possible only because of the fortuitous occurrence of iron ore, fluxing stone, and coking coal-all the primary iron-making materials within a 25-mile radius of the blast furnaces.

In conclusion of a series of deep exploration-borings with the diamond drill, I beg to submit the following statements, supplementary to those in my former papers on this subject: Since my communications read at the St. Louis Meeting, in May last, I have finished two more borings, one terminating at the depth of 922 feet 7 inches, the other at the depth of 715 feet 6 inches. Triaxial creep behavior of oil shale was investigated in the laboratory at simulated in-situ conditions. A range of temperature and stress conditions were chosen to represent those within the inter-chamber pillars of a modified in-situ retorting operation. Oil shale in grades up to 60 gallons per ton have been tested. Experimental data and a constitutive model have been presented here.

THE DEVELOPMENT of the Phelps Dodge copper and railroad interests began in one era of the company's history and continued unbroken into the next. Yet the two eras themselves were strikingly dissimilar and represented marked differences in the company's activities, corporate structure, and personnel. From its organization in 1834 almost to the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, the partnership known as Phelps Dodge was directed, managed, and controlled by the family dynasty established by Anson Greene Phelps. The Government has for disposal a large stock of horse-drawn vehicles that were produced during the war to transport and handle all kinds of army supplies. These vehicles consist of escort wagons, also the axles and wheels; ambulances, model 1909; sprinkler, wagons, buckboards, combat wagons, hand carts, water carts, ration carts, and medical carts. These vehicles are adapted to numerous commercial purposes. All were produced under the strictest Government rules, specifications, and supervision and are first class in every way.

Callow-Type flotation cells, with various modifications, have been employed at the Hayden concentrator since 1917. Other flotation machines, such as matless-air and mechanically agitated types, which have been tested in competition, have failed to handle tonnages or give metallurgical results equal to the modified Callow-type cells on the Ray ores. The original type consisted of wide, deep launders with a relatively flat bottom constructed of porous concrete, through which the air was introduced into the flotation pulp. These cells were constructed to handle the tailings from the gravity concentrating process and no special attention was given to pre- conditioning the pulp ahead of flotation.
