During the course of any truck loading operation, it will become necessary to replace hauling and loading units. Timing of replacement can be selected on the basis of necessity, or guesswork, or on a schedule derived from past performance records. Replacing units too soon results in high capital costs per hour. Waiting too long results in high maintenance costs per hour. As with any phase of a mining operation, a planned schedule can reduce overall costs and keep breakdowns within reason.

I have long been aware that ferruginous copper furnace-slags if fused in the electric arc will yield metallic iron containing copper, and in order to confirm this knowledge, and to obtain further information of the behavior of such slags in the high temperature and reducing conditions of the electric furnace, a number of samples of slag were fused in an experimental electric furnace. The results obtained, given in Table I., show that a very large amount of metallic iron was produced, and that this iron carried with it practically all the copper, gold, and silver, and more than 50 per cent. of the sulphur, of the original slag. The metallic buttons formed in the electric furnace were clean, hard, but not brittle.

(written discussion?).-On studying this paper it has occurred to the writer that possibly it was the drilling of the test cores that produced the strains which affected in-juriously the authors' unrested bars. They found that the machining had only a slight effect, but did they also investigate the effect of the drilling by trying rest applied to the bloom sections before the cores were drilled from then? The writer has heard of a similar effect of rest after machining on test bars from castings, and it would seem more reasonable that the ductility was increased because the rests relieved strains pro-duced in chilling the test cores from the blooms, than because of any peculiar combination of solidification and rolling strains in the blooms which did not exist in smaller billets.

As I promised, in a former paper on the Bryan Mill,* to give further data regarding the plates from four battery-aprons, I now submit the following: These aprons were 4.5 feet wide by 16 feet long; the first two plates of each apron were 4.5 by 4.5 feet, and the remainder of varying sizes, as can be seen by their relative weights, as shown in the table; but all were 54 inches wide. They were in use 4 years and 9 months, and about 15,265 tons of ore passed over each. The ore was quartz, carrying about the same weight in silver as in gold; showing some copper, and highly impregnated with ferric oxide. The tailings show about 0.6 per cent., and the bullion about 10 per cent., of copper. The silver was present mostly as sulphide; and the copper was also present as sulphide, with some carbonate. The ore treated ill 1898 was a fair average of the whole run; so I take it as an example from which to make a few deductions.

Drilling in Missouri in 1944 was nearly treble the rate of 1943 because of continued development of the Tarkio pool in Atchison County and the preparation of a pool in Jackson County for a water-injection project. The pipe line from the Prairie Point gas pool in Platte County was in operation throughout the year of 1944, but several of the shallow oil pools in Cass and Jackson Counties were off production during much of 1944 because of a shortage of help. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 41,475 .ft., of which 21,187 ft. was by rotary tools and 20,268 ft. by cable tools.

SINCE our last meeting, the Institute has lost, by the death of Mr. Gowen, one of its most distinguished members. I shall only attempt in this place to give a brief account of his many accomplishments and achievements; but our records would certainly be incomplete without a recognition of the important influence which he exerted upon the mining and metallurgical industries of this country, and a testimony to his private virtues of character. Although Mr. Gowen was best known as a great lawyer and as the head of a great railway corporation, he began his career, before he was of age, as the manager of a small anthracite blast-furnace at Shamokin, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He left this position, to engage on his own account in the mining of anthracite coal at Mt. Laffee, near Pottsville. This proved an unprofitable business, and, after the panic of 1857, he began the study of the law. As soon as he was admitted to the bar, he at once entered upon the active practice of his profession, and soon achieved an extraordinary success. In 1869 he was made President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, and he afterwards organized the Pliladelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, the largest coalmining corporation in the world. He became a member of. this Institute during the first year after its organization, and remained a member until his death. He always took a deep interest in the work, and was prompt to co-operate by all means in his power in furthering the objects of the Institute. This report covers the area producing from limes and sands of Pennsylvanian age, roughly embracing the territory between the Red River on the north and the Llano Mountains on the south, and between Fort Worth on the east and Abilene on the west. It includes Archer, Cooke, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, Clay, Baylor and Foard counties in the North Central Texas or Red River Basin area, and Brown, Callahan Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Palo Pinto, Stephens, Shackel-ford, Throckmorton, Young and Jack counties in the West Central Texas area. Furthermore, it includes a brief review of development in Jones, Runnels, Haskell and Fisher counties. North Central and West Central Texas during the year 1928 produced an approximate total of 50,948,7461 bbl. or oil. This represents a decrease of approximately 7,720,250 bbl. under 1927 total production. This decrease was due to a slump in production in Brown, Archer, Wichita, Stephens and Cooke counties. Brown County showed the greatest decrease. The 1928 prodction in this county was approximately 4,500,000 bbl. less than the 1927 production. Gross production during 1929 in the North and West Central Texas area can be expected to be lower than in the year 1928. Only one county showed a considerable increase in production. Wilbarger County production increased approximately 3,000,000 bbl. during 1928. Its daily average increased from 9000 bbl. in April to 36,000 bbl. in August. At the close of 1928 it was averaging close to 32,000 bbl. daily. Drilling activity in North and West Central Texas during 1928 showed but a slight increase in completions. The total number of completions during 1928 was 3902, of which 2094 (53 per cent.) were producers, as compared to 3805 completions and 2112 (56 per cent.) producers during 1927. Brown, Young, Wichita, Archer and Wilbarger counties were the leaders in development. The outstanding discoveries for the districts were the Consolidated pool, extensions in the Greyback pool of Wilbarger County, and the Stephens pool, Fisher County.
