IN THE Southwest a number of large steel chimneys discharge the gases from the copper smelting furnaces. Some of these chimneys show no deterioration after twenty years, others show serious deterioration after tour years service. A steel stack 20 ft. 7 ½ in. (6.3 m.) in diameter by 279 ft. (85 m.) high, Fig. 1, used for roaster gases only at the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co.'s plant at Douglas, Ariz., was lined to the top of the bell, 40 ft. (12 m.) from the base, with common brick placed on end, lime and cement mortar being used. Above the bell, the stack was lined with 4 by 4 by 8 in. (10 by 10 by 20 cm.) building tile, placed on end, making a lining 4 in. thick. The tiles were supported on angle-iron rings, riveted to the inside of the chimney shell about 15 ft. apart. The chimney was put into use in the latter part of 1913. Four years later, considerable of the tile lining had fallen out of place and mixed with the flue dust at the bottom of the chimney. About a year later, several . flattened and distorted sheets were noticed about 70 ft. below the top. An investigation showed that the thickness of these distorted sheets, which was originally ¼ in., had been reduced one half. One year later, or six years after the chimney went into use, several holes, a square foot and smaller in area, appeared near the flat spots mentioned. Soon afterwards, when the chimney was shut down for repairs, it was found that most of the tile lining for 125 ft. from the top had fallen out and that the steel shell was badly corroded; but where the lining remained in place the shell was undamaged. Many of the tile which had fallen out of place had become soft or flaky and crumbling, others were as hard as when placed. An analysis of the hard and soft tile is shown on p. 2. These tile were of a fireclay mixture, and were used instead of common brick on account of lower cost. The steel forming the upper 125 ft. (38 m.) was replaced, and a 4 ¼ -in. (11-cm.) lining of firebrick was laid from the bell to the top of the chimney. The brick were placed on end, wedges and keys being used. After each 8-in. course was set, keyed, and wedged tight, thin mortar -water, sodium silicate, and finely ground silica-was worked into the joints. The brick are supported on angle-iron rings, every 15 ft., in the same way as the tile.

Illinois produced 146,788,000 bbl. of oil in 1940, or nearly 11.0 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the oil-producing states. Its production was only slightly less than that of Oklahoma, which produced 11.5 per cent of the national total. Illinois' production in 1940 represents an increase of 55 per cent over the previous year, when it amounted to 94,912,000 barrels. The development of the Devonian limestone in the Salem and Centralia fields is largely responsible for the increase in production during 1940 Production from the Devonian limestone in these two fields was estimated to be 36,698,000 bbl., or 25 per cent of the state's total production (Table I). The increase in production during June, when the state's daily average production attained a peak of 518,200 bbl. for the week ending June 29, was due to the Devonian production at Centralia (Fig. I). The initial production of the best Devonian wells in the Centralia field was as high as 12,000 bbl. in 24 hr. Daily average production in IIIinois for 1940 was 400,000 bbl. of oil, but actually daily production fluctuated widely during the year. At the beginning of 1940 daily production was approximately 330,000 bbl. During the first hali of the year it in-creased irregularly to the peak in June mentioned above and as the prolific Devonian producing areas were drilled up, the state's daily production declined rapidly during July and continued to decline, although more slowly, until the end of the year, when the daily production was approximately 325,000 bbl. The daily average production per well in the new fields at the end of the year was approximately 40 bbl. (Fig. I). Oil from the Devonian was also produced in the Bartelso field, Clinton County, the Sandoval field, Marion County, and the Irvington field, Washington County, bringing the estimated total production from the Devonian limestone to about 26 per cent of the state's total production, The remainder was obtained largely from the Mississippian system. About 2 per cent of the total was from Pennsylvanian and Ordovician strata. The decline in the Devonian limestone production has been so rapid that the 1941 output from this system will probably be only a small fraction of that of 1940 unless large new reserves are discovered. The "Trenton" (Ordovician) limestone has been tested in two wells in the Centralia field and both were small oil producers at a depth of about 4000 it. The "Trenton" also was found productive in the Salem field at a depth of 4500 ft. (Table 5). The initial production of the discovery well, which was completed shortly after the end of the year, was 130 bbl. on pump. Other wells drilled early in 1941 had initial productions averaging 172 barrels. The outlook for 1941 is for a continuation of drilling activity in Illinois, but at a declining rate (Fig. I, upper curve). The most active area at the end of 1940 was in the deep basin area in Wabash, Edwards, White, and Hamilton Counties.

In the latter part of the year 1943, it was decided to experiment with diamond-drill blast holes in the Old Bed magnetite mine at the Mineville mines of the Republic Steel Corporation, in sections of the ore body where vertical dimensions were large and where development for sublevel bench stopes had already been done. Other possibilities of application for this drilling method were in the reclamation of old floors and pillars in the pitching folds of the Lower Old Bed ore body and in the reclamation of large vertical pillars in the "21" Bonanza-Joker ore body. The cross sections and views of the two ore bodies will show the conditions to which the diamond-drill method has been applied. The Lower Old Bed magnetite ore body is lenticular and dips approximately 30° toward the southwest and strikes generally southeast and northwest. An intensely folded structure, which pitches generally on an axis approximately at right angles to the strike, is continuous from the uppermost old workings down to the present bottom of the mine, and probably continues with depth. On successively lower levels this folded structure becomes greater in vertical dimensions and the two folds are closer together in a horizontal dimension. As shown in Fig. I, this folded structure gives to parts of the ore body considerable vertical dimensions, which provide areas that were developed for sublevel bench stoping above a slushing drift, as shown in Fig. 2. It was in one of these previously devel-oped sublevel bench stopes, No. 26 on the 1185-ft. level, that the diamond-drill blast-hole method was applied for mining the upper sublevel. The lower sublevel was underhand-bench-drilled to the finger raises of the scram drift below. The roof of this stoping area began to break and spall on the lower sublevel, causing the roof to become inclined. Along the hanging wall of the stope this reached an elevation about half way between the two sublevels. A smooth schistose seam in the hanging wall causes the ore to break away freely. Therefore, if bench mining had been carried on in the upper sublevel, a dangerous condition of poorly supported benches would have resulted. When the drillers were slashing across the sublevel te footwall and hanging wall to make a bench, spdlling roof of the opening below would probably have carried away part of the bench, and would have left a dangerous place in which to continue underhand benching. A 6 by 8-ft. raise had been driven between the lower stope and the upper sublevel about 200 ft. from a manway. It was decided to use this raise for a starting cut and to arrange holes as shown in Fig 3, so that a slot would be opened across the ore body between the footwall and hanging wall. This slot would then be used for the purpose of breaking into the ore, by blasting vertical rings of holes drilled at right angles to the axis of the pitching folds as nearly as possible. Production of both anthracite and bituminous coal in 1954 was about 16 pct below 1953. Estimates on Dec. 1, 1954, indicated 27 million tons of anthracite and 385 million tons of bituminous. Decline in production was due principally to lower demand by the steel industry and the railroads, although competition from other fuels also affected coal. The year was notable for vigorous effort by the coal industry to promote the use of its product. A Cabinet Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy and an Interdepartmental Committee on the Soft Coal Industry were set up by the Administration in Washington. A Governors' Fuel Conference was also organized.

ENGINEERS from industrialized countries are frequently called upon to examine mining operations in primitive areas and make recommendations regarding mechanization and modernization. They often set forth with self-confidence, knowing full well that all that is needed is their experience and several shiploads of mining machinery, and at times they mentally provide the answers before the problems have been clearly stated. In primitive areas it is absolutely essential that the examining engineer spend enough time at the site to acquire a thorough understanding of what is being done now and why it is done the way it is. The objective here is to state in simple terms some of the problems that may be encountered, in- as much as solutions, if they can be found at all, will differ with each experience.

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water -by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other, adsorbent earths.

THE opening session was held on Tuesday evening, February 17th, in the house of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The President of the Institute, Mr. E. B. Coxe, after a few introductory remarks, congratulating the members on the general prosperity in all the branches of the professions and manufactures represented by the Institute, called on Mr. E. F. Loiseau, of Philadelphia, for the first paper, On the Successful Manufacture of Compressed Fuel at Port Richmond, Philadelphia. Professor Prime called attention to the fact that the work of the United States Testing Board had been left unfinished at a point when valuable results had just been reached, and offered the following resolutions: WHEREAS, The American Institute of Mining Engineers has seen with regret that the work of the United States Testing Board has been suspended through the lack of an appropriation by Congress, which appropriation dues not seem likely to be renewed, and WHEREAS, It seems most important to the vital interests of our iron and steel manufactures that the experiments commenced by the United States Testing Board should be carried to successful completion ; Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, to act with a like, committee to he appointed by the American Society of Civil Engineers, to carry out to completion the work commenced by the United States Testing Board. Resolved, That the American Society of Civil Engineers be requested to cooperate with this society by the appointment of a like committee. Resolved, That the committee have authority to request, in the name of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, contributions to a fund to be devoted to the completion of the experiments aforesaid. Resolved, That the Council of this Institute be authorized, whenever requested by the committee so appointed, to petition Congress for the free use of the testing machine at the United States Arsenal at Watertown. Resolved, That a committee be appointed by the President, to select the afore-said committee of experts. The 139th meeting* of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held at New York, February 17 to 20, 1930, the attendance totaling approximately 1800. The meeting consisted of the annual business session, 34 technical sessions at which were presented 166 papers, two meetings of the Board of Directors, two meetings of Section Delegates, two formal lectures and one special lecture, five group dinners and one group luncheon, luncheon daily for members and guests, fourteen committee meetings and conferences, the President's reception, the dinner-dance, an informal dance, a smoker, an exhibition of rare minerals and metals, two meetings of the Woman's Auxiliary and a special program of entertainment for the ladies. The Petroleum Division held seven sessions, including two general sessions featuring, respectively, a symposium on unit operation of oil pools and reports on developments in the petroleum industry during the previous year. The Iron and Steel Division held four sessions, at one of which Dr. Zay Jeffries delivered the Howe Memorial Lecture, the title of which was "The Future of the American Iron and Steel Industry." The Institute of Metals Division held six sessions, including two devoted to a symposium on the Melting and Casting of Metals, and the general session at which Dr. S. L. Hoyt delivered the annual Institute of Metals Lecture. The title of his lecture was "Hard Metal Carbides and Cemented Tungsten Carbide." The Coal and Coal Products Committee devoted one session and the greater part of another to Coal Classification and at a third session organized as the Coal Division of the Institute. The Committees on Mining Methods and Ground Movement and Subsidence each held a session, besides which they met jointly. Sessions were held by other Technical Committees as follows: Nonferrous Metallurgy, 1; Geophysical Prospecting, 2; Nonmetallic Minerals, 2; Milling Methods, 1; Rare Minerals and Metals, 1; Mining Geology, 2; Mine Ventilation, 2; Engineering Education, 1. FOR a number of years the petroleum department of The Chase National Bank has been making a continuing study of the financial aspects of thirty oil companies. (See Pogue and Coqueron, "Financial Analysis of Thirty Oil Companies," pamphlet, The Chase National Bank, November 1945, for data covering eleven years, 1934-1944, and the list of the companies making up the group. See also "Capital Employed in the Petroleum Industry," by the same authors, M&M, November 1944.1 This group represents a large sample of theAmerican petroleum industry, covering about two thirds of the business. Certain aspects of this study concern the capital employed in crude oil production, the main features of which arc presented in this paper.

DaVIES and Richardson1 have measured composition changes for Mn1-Owith variation in the equilibrium partial pressure of oxygen at 1500°, 1575°, and 1650°C, where 6 is the deviation from the simple stoichiometric ratio. No trend in this relationship with temperature was observed, so these remarks apply to the whole temperature range. The experimental values and their spread are shown by the bounded straight-line segments in the figure. Davies and Richardson assume that the stoichiometric oxide shows Frenkel disorder, given by the equation Mn2+Mn2+ + Mn" [1] where Mn2+ is a normal lattice ion which moves into an interstitial site (Mni2+) leaving a vacancy (Mn,"). The superscript dashes indicate that there is an excess charge on the anions surrounding the vacancy. Schottky disorder, in which a perfect crystal acquires equal numbers of cation and anion (Ov") vacancies according to leads to equations of exactly the same form in the analysis below. In view of the neutron diffraction results of Roth,2 which shows extensive Frenkel disorder in Fe1-o, Eq. [I] seems more appropriate. The deviations from stoichiometric composition, MnO, result from the addition of oxygen according to In effect Davies and Richardson ignore the variation of Mn3+in constructing equilibrium constants. This approximation might not appear to be very serious if the excess positive charges are really free posi- tive holes (P+) and if the intrinsic conductivity is high as a result of the reaction where e- is a conducting electron. However, the calculations of Buessem and Butler3 indicate that the partition functions of the free charges make a large contribution to the equilibrium constant, and this approximation would not be a desirable one. Furthermore, Morin4 shows that the positive holes are probably localized in MnO and therefore are described better by the mass action principle than by a degenerate gas model. Davies and Richardson's considerations require that activity corrections be applied beyond a 6 value of about 0.005. It is proposed to show here that the dissociation pressure curve can be calculated reasonably well over the whole composition range studied without activity corrections by choosing appropriate equilibrium constants for reactions 1 and 2. As stoichiometric composition The mass action constant, Ks, for reaction [I.] and the equilibrium constant, K,, for reaction [2] are given by where the concentrations which do not change significantly have been absorbed into the constants. The brackets denote concentrations. The deviation from stoichometric composition is given by gardless of [Mni2 ]. Substituting Eq. [7] in [6]

Cement facility modernization is discussed in considerable detail with examples illustrating before and after conditions. Itemized are the improvements realized in better working conditions, better efficiency, higher production, lower costs, and better community relations. These improvements are related to the overall profitability of the particular plant or facility.

PREVIOUS work on the principles of comminution has shown: (I) that the surface produced is proportional to work input (Rittinger law, 1a-3); (2) that there is regularity to the weight distribution of the fragments according to size.4-10 In this paper it is brought out that the surface on the fragments is distributed in definite and simple relation to size. The experimental work has involved: I. Construction of an apparatus capable of measuring the surface of mineral fragments independently of the chemical composition of the fragments and independently of the site of the surface; 2. Refining the methods available for measurement of particle size; 3. Designing and building a crusher capable of operating on very small quantities of mineral, if necessary on single crystals, and in such fashion as to minimize handling losses of material. Complete experiments have been carried out with massive quartz and individual quartz crystals. Partial experiments, lacking surface measurements, have been made with glass spheres, galena, sphalerite, fluorite, salt and coal.

Ix estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end off its life, or to return the capital involved when the earning-power of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compound interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given, length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time-usually once a year-and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows

MODERN industry's incessant demands for increased operating efficiency and lower costs require that hazards attending all occupations be reduced to a minimum. Reduction of the inevitable losses that result from accidents and injury to the worker is one of the important economic problems confronting industry today and is the basis for the widespread safety movement. Dr. Charles E. Munroe, chief explosive chemist of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is father of the statement, "The existence of a nuisance is evidence of an economic waste." This pointed expression of the internationally recognized scholar and explosives engineer has a direct relation to the prevention of accidents. Every injury and death in industry is a waste in human endeavor and a lessening of productive gain. Dr. Munroe has aptly paraphrased his previous summation with reference to wastes as follows: "A lost-time accident is evidence of an economic waste." That the economic waste entailed by occupational accidents is chargeable to industry is well substantiated by the fact that all but four states (Mississippi, South Carolina, Florida and Arkansas) now have workingmen's liability and compensation laws.

Industrial minerals are the Cinderella of the mining I industry. Often considered as just dirt by traditional hard-rock miners and oil drillers, these products nonetheless comprise the second largest segment of the industry and the fastest-growing one. With annual sales of $5.7 billion, industrial minerals make up 22% of the dollar value of U.S. mineral consumption. By contrast, metals account for only 11%. Fuels, of course, are dominant, representing 67%. The dollar values of production and consumption for the three segments of the industry in 1968 are shown in Table I. The growth rate of industrial minerals is shown in Table II. From 1953-1968, the current-dollar value of all U.S. mineral production increased at the average annual rate of 3.8% while that of the gross national product increased at 5.9%. Industrial minerals are the only segment of the mining industry that approached the growth of the overall economy in this period, with production values increasing 5.1% a year and apparent-consumption values 5.6% These data, expressed in current dollars, include the effects of inflation. The growth in U.S. industrial minerals production is even more striking when expressed in indexes of physical production. As shown in Table III, production of all U.S. industries increased by 4.1% a year from 1953 to 1968. The growth in production of stone and earth minerals just matched this figure. By contrast, the average annual increase for oil and gas was 2.2%: for metals, 1.6% : and for coal, only 0.6 %.
