Metallic bismuth was known in the Middle Ages and the name is supposed to come from the German Wismut. The origin of the German name is uncertain. References to bismuth are found in the writings of Valentine, Paracelsus, and Agricola between 1450 and 1550. Early specimens of bismuth were very impure and often were confused with antimony, tin, and zinc. About the middle of the eighteenth century, J. H. Pott, C. J. Geoffroy, and Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing fairly pure bismuth and showed it to be an elementary metal similar in many respects to lead.

MANY attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits-a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It may be urged that the microscopic structure must be taken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all test-pieces be made under the same conditions; and it is be¬lieved that the tests described in this paper satisfy that require¬ment. Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. It seems to me that an investigation like that of Prof. Richards, but confined to the first 6 or 8 inches of fall only, and carried out with suitably delicate recording-apparatus, is what we

It is generally conceded as axiomatic that the aggregate producer and the average urban resident have mutually incompatible goals. The producer wants to be near his mass market and the average resident wants him as far away as possible. The traditional economic decision to mine local material to avoid transportation costs is increasingly challenged by zoning and planning bodies and by citizens' groups. This conflict generated much written and spoken word and offered opportunity for great flights of rhetoric. The pressure on the producer also has forced re¬appraisal of the need for the classic confrontation with indications that much of the conflict is more apparent than substantive. In New England several factors combine to increase complexity of the siting problem. It is a region of high land values and population density. Due to the proximity of metropolitan areas, even rural communities have experienced a prolif¬eration of environmental groups with concomitant enthusiastic regional planning and critical watch over land use. In New England where there is little public understanding of the necessity for, and the realities of, mineral production a sophisticated approach to aggregate production site location is required.

Before World War II we proudly considered that we were the nation of all the world most richly endowed in mineral resources. We knew it was no accident that those countries abundantly supplied with mineral resources became the great manufacturing nations, and the politically and militarily strong ones; and that our own great industrial cities sprang up where coal and iron met. We all reallized, especially we of the mining profession, that the energy of fuels and the solidity of metals spelled industrial growth and in turn industrial might and that other nations came to regard mineral self-sufficiency as one of the chief goalsof economic nationalism.

Production of anhydrous zirconium tetrachloride by direct chlor- ination of a zirconium oxide carbon mixture in a silica-brick-lined chlorinator is described. Theory and thermodynamics of reactions are discussed. A pilot-model chlorinator and full-scale production equipment are described and operating data are included. ANHYDROUS zirconium tetrachloride required as a starting material in the Kroll process for production of ductile zirconium has been produced in this country principally by chlorination of the carbide or "carbonitride" made by reduction of zircon sand concentrates with carbon in the arc furnace. This process and the equipment used have been fully described.'.' It is well known that zircon or badde-leyite ores may be chlorinated directly with chlorine in the presence of carbon, and this one-step approach would seem at first glance to be preferable to the two steps involved in the carbide-chloride operation. As previously discussed1 considerations leading to adoption of the longer process were: 1—Chlorination of the carbide proceeds rapidly at temperatures below 500°C, whereas temperatures above 900°C were considered necessary for chlorination of zircon-carbon mixtures. 2—The highly exothermic nature of the carbide-chlorine reaction makes it self-sustaining, while heat must be supplied continuously in direct chlorination of the ore. 3—Silicon was thought to be chlorinated along with zirconium in the direct chlorination of zircon, leading to high chlorine consumption. In production of carbide in the arc furnace, silicon is driven off as silicon monoxide and does not enter the chlorinator. 4—For efficient direct chlorination, the ore must be finely ground and intimately mixed with carbon, and the mixture briquetted. 5—Direct chlorination requires a much larger chlorinator for a given production capacity than chlorination of carbide. Recently it has become necessary to produce large quantities of zirconium metal from a chemically purified zirconium oxide. Since the cost of the latter is high, the relatively high losses encountered in production of carbide in the arc furnace could not be tolerated, and a graphite resistor furnace5 was developed for production of carbide, which was then chlorinated in equipment previously used for chlorinating arc-furnace carbide. This method of operation was quite satisfactory, and losses in the carbid-ing step were minimized. However, operating costs were relatively high, and the process did not lend itself particularly well to large-scale operation because of the multiplicity of small units required and the hand labor needed to load, unload, and maintain the furnaces. To chlorinate the carbide, a vertical-shaft chlorinator was used in which the charge was heated with a central split graphite-rod resistor.' Operation of this chlorinator was somewhat less satisfactory with the resistor furnace carbide than it had been with the arc-furnace carbide due, principally, to the differences in physical properties of the carbide. The arc-furnace carbide is obtained as a fused metallic-appearing mass which can be crushed to -1/4 in. with production of a minimum of fines, whereas the resistor-furnace product is lightly sintered and produces a large proportion of fines in crushing and handling. These fines tend to pack in the chlorinator and promote channeling. which results in poor chlorine efficiency and low capacity. Data based on production of 22,000 lb of chloride from resistor-furnace carbide in this equipment are shown in Table I. Necessity for increasing production of chloride from about 2,000 to 15,000 lb per week led to further investigation of possible methods for direct chlorination of the oxide or oxide-carbon mixtures. Direct chlorination of the pure oxide presents much less difficulty than chlorination of zircon sand or oxide ores. The oxide is easily ground to —200 mesh, and no silica is present to cause excessive consumption of chlorine or contamination of the product. LECTURE, it appears, is a discourse that is supposed to be instructive. I am quite sure that you will derive no instruction from what I have to say. I will be satisfied if my remarks provoke thought along one or two mental paths that have not been traveled so fre¬quently as to be devoid of interest. I have no particular message apropos of professional engineers or professional engineering, and any conclusions that I may seem to reach will be purely tentative and incidental. Probably at times you have wondered, in a casual way at least, why so many people who are not, never have been, and never will be engineers, want to use the title. For example, I recently received a communication from a life insurance broker or salesman, whose chaste letterhead bore the legend "Estate Engineer." He was perfectly serious about it, as is also the expert accountant who assumes the imposing name of cost-analysis engineer. Dozens of equally amazing titles might be cited. Then there is that class of individuals who have been engineers, in the true sense of the word; who have gone into some other kind of occupation; but who cling tenaciously to the name engineer, usually prefixing some word or other which at once gives them away by telling what their work really is. For example, we have such pseudomorphs as the management engineer, and the sales engineer. It is quite evident that engineer is a word to conjure with. Evidently both the man who appro¬priates the designation without any justification and the ex-engineer who persists in calling himself an engineer even after he has abandoned engineer-

A description is given of the development of a process for making low sulphur steel on furnaces fired with 2 1/2 pet sulphur oil. Slag and metal are analyzed at melt. Slag weight is estimated. A simple method for calculating necessary lime additions for making 0.025 and 0.035 pct sulphur steel is given. DURING the last 15 years John Summers & Sons have been confronted increasingly by the problem of producing a low sulphur steel from high sulphur materials. The principles adopted, the processes used, the data collected on a furnace specially set aside to study this problem, and speculation on future developments are dealt with in this paper. This study is limited to two melting shops which make sheet steel only, of the following analysis: C, 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.33; S, 0.04, 0.035, 0.03, and 0.025; and P, 0.02 and 0.015. All the processes described have reference to the manufacturing of this steel and are not necessarily applicable, without modification, to other steels. The raw materials used are given in Table I. Development of Process About 1934, Schenck's work on phosphorus was applied to frame quantitative rules for the removal of phosphorus, with great success. We could however, neither in our own work nor in the voluminous literature, find any assistance to frame quantitative furnace rules to remove sulphur. Perhaps, we should have persevered with Schenck's outstanding chapter on sulphur in The Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, but we missed the importance of one (Ss) sentence on p. 478. "Evidently this ratio -------- is [S] the important quantity to be considered from the point of view of chemical reaction; it is clear that the sulphur content of the steel alone, as frequently given in the literature cannot suffice for judging the success of the reaction unless special details are given regarding the sulphur charge and the amount of slag."' We were not however very successful in getting values for Schenck's "n" that agreed with (S) arrived at by our direct analysis. [S] In addition to Schenck's work much attention was given to V value. The formula selected for V was: (SCaO) — 1.57 (2 P2O5) (S SiO2) After plotting many charges a curve was obtained, based upon the relationship between the percentage sulphur in the finished steel and V value, Fig. 1. For a long time this was used as standard with about a 60 to 70 pct success on producer-gas fired furnaces, if all uprising scrap was used and no bought scrap used. An inspection of this curve shows clearly that it is not a quantitative manufacturing process, and that it was not sure enough to go to the trouble and expense of doing stage analysis for P,O,,

THIS process is performed in the Pernot puddling furnace; it removes from 75 to 80 per cent. of the phosphorus, most of the sulphur, and practically all the silicon, from crude iron, in from five to eight minutes. It has been in regular use since March, 1877, and has prod uced over seventeen thousand tons of washed metal for the open-hearth furnace. During two years, nearly all, and lately, all the open-hearth steel produced in these works has been made from about 5 tons of washed pig and 2 tons of scrap per open-hearth furnace heat. There are 12 open-hearth furnaces, of which 4 to 9 are running, according to the state of orders. A large amount of highly phosphoric iron from France and Belgium has been also washed and then puddled for parties who have taken, or are expected to take, licenses. The washing of pig for puddling, however, is not a practice at Krupp's works, because pure pigs are nearly as cheap as impure ones. The author and his assistant, Mr. Laureau, spent, during the last month, three days at Krupp's works, examining this process. They copied out of the office books characteristic analyses and physical tests, some of which are given herewith. They also brought hone many samples of pig, cleaned metal, puddle bar, and steel, which they saw treated. Analyses of some of these samples appear in Table IV. As there are no blast furnaces at Essen, the iron is melted in two Bessemer cupolas with fore-hearths; they melt 12g pounds of iron with 1 pound of coke. The metal is run by a spout from the fore-hearth into an opening at the side of the main door of the washing-furnace. The Washing furnace.-This is a regenerative gas furnace. It has a Pernot revolving-hearth of 12 feet external diameter and 3 feet depth. (See Plate.) The four regenerator chambers have 780 cubic feet capacity, which is about the same as the average regenerator capacity of open-hearth steel furnaces of equal tonnage. The lining is 13 inches thick on the sides and 9 inches on the bottom, thus giving a hearth 9 feet 10 inches by 2 feet 3 inches deep. The lining is composed of lumps of highly refractory ores

THE purpose of this study was to measure the vapor pressure of silver as the first step in the determination of activities in silver alloys and to test the limitations of the method adopted. In order to work at low pressures, below 2x10-2 mm of mercury, the orifice effusion technique was employed. To shorten the time of collection of silver from the atomic beam, radioactive silver (Ag110) was used as a tracer. The rate of effusion of a monatomic vapor from an "ideal" orifice, where the thickness of the orifice edge is negligible compared with the orifice diameter, can be readily calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, G = vM a p/v2pRT where G is the weight of material effusing from the orifice per unit time; p is the vapor pressure at oven temperature, T; R is the gas constant; M is the molecular weight of the vapor; and a is the orifice area. Consolidating constants and expressing as the weight of material effusing from the orifice in a period of time, t, (5.83)(10-2) (vM) (a) (t) (p)/vT where GT is total weight of monatomic vapor effused (g); M is molecular weight of the effusing tracer vapor; a is orifice area (cm2); t is time of effusion (sec); p is vapor pressure of effusing material (mm of Hg); and T is oven temperature (OK). The vapor effuses from the orifice in a hemispherical pattern, and the intensity of the beam in any direction is given by the cosine distribution law.' Considering this, the weight of effused material can be calculated from the amount of material passing through a circular collimator intersecting the beam. If such a collimator is in a plane parallel to the plane of the orifice and with center on the normal to the orifice center, GT = G?/1-cos2? = G?/sin2? where G? is the weight of effused material passing through the collimator, and 0 is one half the apex angle of the cone defined by the collimator circumference and the orifice center. Tyrone-a complete mining and concentrating facility built by Phelps Dodge Corp.-straddles the Continental Divide where surface water on either side flows in opposite directions although all water is taken from and returned on the northwest side of the Divide. At the outset, Tyrone was saddled with a problem of an adequate water supply, and the Gila River some 23 miles distant appeared to be the logical source. This in itself presented a major obstacle to Phelps Dodge because of the distance water had to be pumped and because of an adverse head which had to be overcome between the Gila River and the two 4-million-gal-capacity terminal water supply tanks at the mill. Having acquired water rights on the Gila River and in order to control the seasonal fluctuations in water volume, the company built the Bill Evans, off stream, earth-filled dam. This reservoir will contain 2100 acre-ft of water when full and it was constructed by the Hamilton Construction Co. for Phelps Dodge. The dam impounds fresh water for the Tyrone plant's use and four vertical turbine pumps (4500 gpm each) lift the water 275 ft from the Gila River into the reservoir. Since construction, Phelps Dodge has optioned the lake to the New Mexico State Game Commission for recreational purposes. In addition to the lake, land around the reservoir has been optioned to the State Game Commission for public use. The lake has already been stocked with trout and by next summer some keepers should be available for the taking.

TO all Mineral Dressers, but particularly to those in the Coal and Industrial Minerals Divisions: Ted Counselman, retiring after two years at the helm of the Milling Committee, pointed with pride to the continued growth of that committee, and sang the swan song "Why ain't we a Division of Mineral Dressing?" Our genial Secretary pointed out, handily, that, you see, the way the Institute is divided there are several blocks running across this way here, and one running all the way down here, and another running part way down here, and they all cut across each other like this, and anyway the miners want to be a Division now, so why not you Mineral Dressers be good and not upset the big Institute organizational chart? And anyway again, Divisions have vested interests, and a Division of Mineral Dressing would take something away from Coal and something from Industrial Minerals, and any good institutional man can see that a Division would never give anything up. It was all quite confusing, and apparently not too convincing, because then the Milling Committee went ahead and voted unanimously it is a good idea, let's see what the other fellows think about it as well.

Its great good fortune consisted in two things; a bountiful supply hidden by nature in the rocks of the earth, and a steady and large increase, during the past twenty-five years, in the demand for petroleum products. It is a remarkable fact that consumption of gasoline in the United States has shown an increase every year since automobiles first became important, and even in 1930 there was a four per cent increase, in spite of the universal depression; the estimated increase if the times had been normal, was ten per cent. FROM prehistoric times to our own day man has struggled against extremes of climate. Human life, originating in semi-tropical or temperate areas, was unable to progress into the northern latitudes until fire was discovered and some form of clothing provided. It was found possible to maintain life even in the hottest parts of the tropics, but only at a great sacrifice of comfort and efficiency compared with the more temperate zones, or in cooler areas with the protection of clothing and artificial heat. It was no accident, but the natural result of climatic conditions, that efficiency became the greatest and civilization the most advanced in areas where the natural climate was favorable, or in cooler zones where protection against severe cold could be se-cured by relatively simple methods of conserving or producing heat.

THE following is an account of a survey undertaken to test the possibility of outlining a kimberlite pipe by magnetouietric methods. Kimberlite is a basic igneous rock closely related to melilite-basalt or alnoite, which occurs either in the form of volcanic plugs or as dikes intruded into rocks of various types and geological ages up to and includ¬ing the Lower Cretaceous. The famous diamond mines of South Africa are all in kimberlite pipes and these pipes are probably the original source as well of the vast alluvial deposits found in various parts of the country. The pipe chosen for this experiment is one that ' occurs on the farm Goedgevonden No. 20, about sixteen miles north of the village of Klerksdorp and ninety miles southwest of Johannesburg. Some prospecting has been done on this pipe and diamonds were produced from it but not in paying quantities. The magnetometric survey was made in June, 1932, by R. Krahmann and H. Wallisch and the results are shown on the accompanying plan. On the plan are shown also the boundaries of the pipe as exposed at the surface and details in regard to the surrounding foundations. These are taken from a geological survey made at a later date by W. Beetz, of Johannesburg.

A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 11/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude. The primary thought at the time millisecond delays were introduced was to investigate the results on rock breakage by firing a line of holes in a quarry face so that charges in adjacent holes would not be detonated simultaneously. This could not be accomplished satisfactorily with regular delays. The time interval between successive periods of 1/2 to 1 sec was sufficient to permit considerable movement of the burden. If the burden of one hole was reduced to a great extent by the firing of an adjacent hole, the firing of the hole with the reduced burden would likely reveal this lack of confinement by a terrific report and wild throw of rock. In the early blasts with millisecond delays it was observed that instead of the usual sharp report, the blast had a muffled sound and vibration was not as perceptible as when simultaneous firing was used. Because many quarry operators were being threatened with injunctions or suits for damages by neighbors who claimed structural damage to their buildings, millisecond delays were tried extensively in quarries. In the majority of these trials, the results were very satisfactory. The seismologists recorded the ground movement created by many blasts and verified the initial observations that millisecond delays could be used to reduce vibrations appreciably. In the past few years the advantages of this principle of nonsimultaneous firing of the charges in blasts has become generally accepted. Today the quarry operator who has vibration troubles, inadequate breakage, and excessive backbreak and has not investigated the possibilities of millisecond delay blasting is ignoring a remedy that has proved satisfactory for many. His complacency may be costing him money. Because of the results attained in quarry blasting, it was logical that millisecond delays should be tried in construction work such as in road cuts. As formations in this type of work are likely to change rapidly with advance of the cut, it is more difficult to evaluate results than in quarry blasting. However, this improved control over timing has been beneficial in limiting throw, promoting fragmentation, and reducing overbreak. In blasting near buildings the reduction in vibration and in throw has been especially helpful. As blasters employed in construction work learn what may be accomplished by closer control over the time of firing of explosives charges, more and more millisecond delays are being used to supplant instantaneous electric blasting caps. Improved Fragmentation Underground With this background of promising results, it was not surprising that millisecond delays should go underground. In limestone mining use of millisecond delays as compared with use of cap and fuse or electric blasting caps showed improved fragmentation in stopes and in slabbing operations. Then an opportunity developed to use millisecond delays in some tunnels being driven in a limestone mine (fig. 1). Using the normal charge employed and merely substituting three millisecond delay periods for three regular delay periods, there was a noticeable difference in the appearance and the position of the pile of rock after a blast. A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 11/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude. The primary thought at the time millisecond delays were introduced was to investigate the results on rock breakage by firing a line of holes in a quarry face so that charges in adjacent holes would not be detonated simultaneously. This could not be accomplished satisfactorily with regular delays. The time interval between successive periods of 1/2 to 1 sec was sufficient to permit considerable movement of the burden. If the burden of one hole was reduced to a great extent by the firing of an adjacent hole, the firing of the hole with the reduced burden would likely reveal this lack of confinement by a terrific report and wild throw of rock. In the early blasts with millisecond delays it was observed that instead of the usual sharp report, the blast had a muffled sound and vibration was not as perceptible as when simultaneous firing was used. Because many quarry operators were being threatened with injunctions or suits for damages by neighbors who claimed structural damage to their buildings, millisecond delays were tried extensively in quarries. In the majority of these trials, the results were very satisfactory. The seismologists recorded the ground movement created by many blasts and verified the initial observations that millisecond delays could be used to reduce vibrations appreciably. In the past few years the advantages of this principle of nonsimultaneous firing of the charges in blasts has become generally accepted. Today the quarry operator who has vibration troubles, inadequate breakage, and excessive backbreak and has not investigated the possibilities of millisecond delay blasting is ignoring a remedy that has proved satisfactory for many. His complacency may be costing him money. Because of the results attained in quarry blasting, it was logical that millisecond delays should be tried in construction work such as in road cuts. As formations in this type of work are likely to change rapidly with advance of the cut, it is more difficult to evaluate results than in quarry blasting. However, this improved control over timing has been beneficial in limiting throw, promoting fragmentation, and reducing overbreak. In blasting near buildings the reduction in vibration and in throw has been especially helpful. As blasters employed in construction work learn what may be accomplished by closer control over the time of firing of explosives charges, more and more millisecond delays are being used to supplant instantaneous electric blasting caps. Improved Fragmentation Underground With this background of promising results, it was not surprising that millisecond delays should go underground. In limestone mining use of millisecond delays as compared with use of cap and fuse or electric blasting caps showed improved fragmentation in stopes and in slabbing operations. Then an opportunity developed to use millisecond delays in some tunnels being driven in a limestone mine (fig. 1). Using the normal charge employed and merely substituting three millisecond delay periods for three regular delay periods, there was a noticeable difference in the appearance and the position of the pile of rock after a blast. A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal effect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24S-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to intercrystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot be accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknall1 demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K. 10m/T (I) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-Q/RT (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver- rich copper alloy2 and of duralumin. 3
