The strength of hard drawn copper wire is a question of considerable importance to both manufacturer and consumer. Unlike steel and alloy wires, in which strength is governed by both chcniical and physical considerations, t,he high conductivity required for copper wire in the clcc-trical industry generally precludes the possibility of obt,aining tensile strength through the use of alloys. Consequently, this strenglh is largely a rnatter of the ~hysical structure, and all factors known to affect this structure, such as rolling temperature, die contours, lubricants, drawing speeds, etc., arc matters of prime importance. The experiments described here have becn carried out dl~ring the past year at the Baltimore plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in connection with a general investigat,ion of sorne of the questions mentioned above, with the object of studying thc physical ~t~ructure of hard drawn copper wire and the influence of ccrtain factors on t,hat st'ruct.ure. The work has been of an exploratory nature, rather than con~prehensivc., but it was thought that the result,s might prove of sr~fficient general interest tjo warrant their publicatlion. The bulk of the hard drawn coppcr wire used in places where strength is an important factor is rnanufacturcd to strict specification, based USU-ally in the United States on thab of t,he Arrlerican Society for Tcst'ing Materials (B-1-23). This specification calls for almost as high a, valuc of t,ensilc strength, consistent with elongation, as it is possible pract'icnlly to obtain, and only physically perfect mlaterial can be relied on to lliect such a specification. Obvious defects, such as laminat'ions protluc:etl through fins in bhe original rods or brittleness duo lo ovt~rdrawing, arc. usually recognized and need only passing refercncc. Laminatlions can be detected by twisting and untwisting the wircx several times; they will show up on the surface in the form of fins. Pig. 1 shows a very bad example of this defect. Thc wire may bc perfectly smooth before twisting hut, when such larrlinations arc3 prcstmt they will readily show up under this treatrncnt. This trouble is caliscd by sirriilar defects in the original rod produced by overfills in rolling. Fig. 2 shows the cross-section of the rod from which thc wire in Fig. 1 was drawn.

The mechanical behavior of MgCu2 from 20 o to 725°C has been determined by "brittle-ring" tensite-test techniques, axial compression, and bending experiments. Compressive ductility begins at 450°C (0.65 T/Tm) and slowly increases with increasing temperature white the tensile ductility is characterized by an abrupt brittle-ductile transition at 600°C (0.8T/Tm). The compressive strength increases eightfold from room temperature to 400°C with a "normal" decrease as the temperature is further increased. The tensile strength goes through a rather abrupt threefold increase above 600°C with a subsequent decrease at higher temperatures. The slip system is (111)[110] and the twinning system is (111)[112]. At high temperatures MgCu2 is quite rate-sensitive, and dynamic yield points are observed that are extremely orientation-dependent. The high-temperature creep behavior under constant load is characterized by an increasing strain-rate with time. The general characteristics of the mechanical behavior make it possible to classify MgCu2 with those materials in which initial mobile dislocation density and the dislocation velocity-stress dependence are significant in determining mechanical response. Mgcu2 is the C15 prototype of the cubic Laves phase. Its range of homogeneity extends from 32.8 to 35.5 at. pct Mg at 500°C and narrows at lower temperatures. The lattice parameter is reported to vary from 7.02 to 7.05A,1 and the compound is completely ordered to the melting point of 819°C. MgCu2 has a brassy metallic appearance, is extremely brittle, and many of its physical properties are intermediate between those of the constituent elements: the electrical resistivity is 3.5 x 10-6 ohm-cm, Young's modulus is 10x 106 psi, the shear modulus is 6 x l06 psi, and the thermal coefficient of expansion is 18.7 x 10-6 cm per cm per "C from 20" to 250°C. Usually, properties of intermetallic compounds as functions of temperature have been determined by hardness, compression, or impact behavior, and almost all of these experiments have been performed on polycrystalline materials. Tammann and Dahl,2 for instance, determined the onset of ductility in a series of binary intermetallics by ball-hardness measurements and found the onset to range between 0.71 and 0.96 T/T,. Lowrie's3 investigations included some tensile properties, and he found ductility beginning around 0.65 T/Tm for most materials examined. His work did include some data on polycrystalline, nonstoichiometric MgCu2, however. No. 425, 12,000 words.)—This paper describes a research project undertaken to provide a means of studying the behavior of weighty structures such as mines, dams, foundations, etc., with models of the same material in the laboratory. The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test. Miike Colliery of Mitsui Coal Mining Company, the biggest and oldest coal mine in Japan, is producing a quarter of the national coal production, about 5.2 million tons of clean coal annually and almost a half of which is now being mined under the "slicing Mining System". The slicing system is a mining method to mine a thick coal seam dividing it into two faces, upper and lower. Its history started nearly 20 years ago. However, the all-around modernization of this system has made little progress up to recent years, while mining methods for single longwall faces has made a remarkable progress together with the improvements in mining machineries, self advancing supports and so on. The reason was that the tremendous difference in adaptabilities of mechanized face equipments existing between the upper and lower faces has made it very difficult to increase the total production capacity of slicing system. After our persistent study for seventeen years, we have recently realized successfully the quite satisfactory slicing system, applying the combination of shield type self advancing supports and double ranging drum cutter at both faces. We are now fully convinced of that the high efficient, quite safe and improved slicing system has been basically established for the present. This paper intends to brief the transition on the combination of self advancing supports and mining machines, its results and further to detail the development of shield type self advancing support for upper face and artificial roof material which shall be the key point to be successful in full mechanization of slicing faces.

Movement of water through the Tehachapi Mountains was one of the most challenging parts of the planning, design, and construction of the California Aqueduct. The California Aqueduct is the main artery of the California State Water Project, which will move water 444 miles from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta into the arid and semiarid, densely populated parts of Southern California. The $2,000,000,000 project, designed and constructed by the California State Dept. of Water Resources, was started in 1957 at the Oroville Dam site and is now well past the halfway mark in construction. Water is now being delivered from the California Aqueduct to portions of the San Joaquin Valley. The California Aqueduct is scheduled for completion in 1972. Tunnels on the Tehachapi Crossing are often overshadowed in engineering descriptions of the Crossing by the tremendous importance and engineering significance of the Tehachapi pumping plant which will pump water through the tunnel system. For purposes of this paper, it will suffice to say that the plant is designed to lift 4100 cu ft of water per sec up approximately 2000 ft, making this the highest pumplift in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Water will be moved from the pumping plant through twin tunnels called the Tehachapi Discharge Lines to the top of the lift. From here, water will flow through four additional tunnels which are all linked by short connecting structures (Fig. 1). The tunnels are referred to as Tunnels 1, 2, 3, and Carley V. Porter Tunnel. AT Josephtown, Pa., on the south hank of the Ohio River about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is the Josephtown electrothermic zinc smelter, which operates as a custom smelter receiving both domestic and foreign concentrates. Constructed in 1930, the plant was designed to produce zinc oxide and to process 124 tons per day of zinc concentrate obtained mainly from the Company's New York State mines. Zinc condensing equipment was developed in conjunction with the St. Joe electrothermic. furnace and commercial production of zinc metal started in 1936. Expansion of the plant and equipment during 1939 and 1940 brought the processing. capacity to upwards of 300 tons of concentrate per day; and the plant operated at peak capacity during the war years, earning the Army-Navy "E" award and three subsequent stars. A postwar plant expansion is now under way, designed to increase the capacity to 500 tons per day of concentrate, with an estimated daily production of 160 tons of zinc metal of various grades, about 100 tons of zinc oxide, and 425 tons of sulphuric acid as major products.

A comprehensive survey is made of the status of the asbestos industry as it relates to marketing the product. Included are descriptions of the various types of asbestos and the grading and classification systems used. The uses of asbestos, distribution practices, and types of ore bodies are all related to marketing. World production, the producers and their capacities and world consumption for 1966-67 are summarized and statistical data are included. Asbestos is a general term describing a family of fibrous minerals of the serpentine and amphibole mineral groups. Asbestos has a long history going back to the time of the Egyptians, when it was used as a lamp wick. The commercial mining of asbestos started in Canada, Russia, and Africa in the 1800's, and the first asbestos products were made in Italy and Russia. The five main types of asbestos are: chrysotile, accounting for 95% of the total mined, amosite, crocido-lite, anthophyllite, and tremolite. Canada, Russia, and Africa are the major producers of asbestos. The commercial utility of asbestos was at first based on the heat resistance of the fibrous mineral in the form of packing, at the start of the industrial revolution. Its current utility is based more on its ability to reinforce binders such as portland cement, rubber, and plastics. Its inertness to the chemical nature of most binders is unique. Most important is its ability to maintain its reinforcing utility when the product is exposed to weather and soil conditions as in asbestos cement boards and pipe, and heat, pressure, and chemical exposure as in brake linings and gaskets and packings. The mineral asbestos is also unique because its fibrous form permits it to be spun and woven to cloth or formed into paper. Many asbestos applications are critical to national defense and at the present time, there are no satisfactory substitutes. Grading and Classification Canadian chrysotile asbestos fiber is graded and priced by length since basically the longer the fiber the higher the utility. The Canadian asbestos industry does not, however, classify the fiber by direct length measurement, but by a dry screening test. The method is called the Quebec Standard Screen (QS) test. One pound of fiber is mechanically shaken in four vertically stacked sieve boxes. The relative proportions remaining on the sieves defines the grade. The longer the fiber, the larger is the amount that stays on the top coarse screens and the less on the lower, finer mesh screens. Other tests can be used to further define the length distribution of fiber such as the wet screen Bauer McNett and the Suter Webb Comb (3 group only). The Canadian grading system divides the milled fibers into 5 main groups: group 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with 3 group being the longest, and 7 the shortest. Each group is further divided to subgrades, identified in each group by the letters A to Z, with "A" the longest and "Z" the shortest. See Appendix 1 for the Canadian QS classification system. The Russians also use the QS test on chrysotile. The Africans classify their chrysotile into grades similar to Canadian. The African crocidolite and amosite, however, are classified into actual length groups such as l to 2 in. and 2 to 3 in. Amosite and crocidolite are generally longer than chrysotile but also more brittle. Milled asbestos is not composed of staple length fibers like fiber glass or cotton, but of a mixture or blend of fibers ranging from long to short. Milled asbestos has a fiber length distribution similar to the particle size distribution of a powder. For example, the longest group 3 chrysotile grades have a high percentage of the longest fibers (1/2 to 3/4 in.) and low percentage of short fibers (0.003 in.). The figures in Table 1 give the approximate length distribution of the longest, middle, and shortest groups. A second and further method of classifying fiber is the degree to which the fiber bundles are separated to form a larger number of smaller diameter bundles. This property is normally described as the degree of fiberization, openness or surface area. Air permeability tests are used to measure surface area. Asbestos pro-

THE paper on "Specific Efficiency of the Blast Furnace" by Richard Franchot, which was pub-lished in the September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, was presented for discussion at the Pitts-burgh meeting. The session opened with a discussion among S. P. Kinney, Mr. Franchot, and J. N. Reese as to the methods and results in sampling for cyanides in the blast furnace. This is covered in detail in writ-ten discussion below. T. T. Read objected to the use of the term specific efficiency as likely to be confusing. The blast furnace has to perform the function of reducing Fe, 03 to Fe as well as that of fusing the metal and, since the reduc-tion of Fe, 0? involves a CO equilibrium, it seems mis-leading to calculate efficiency on the basis of burning the , all carbon to CO? since it is not possible. Mr. Franchot replied that he used the term in the sense defined by Richards in his "Metallurgical Calculations;" but a subsequent search failed to reveal the term in Richards, who says (page 245, 1st edition): The practical conclusion is that a blast furnace generates in itself not much over 40 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel used, and rejects nearly 60 per cent; by using part of the waste gases to heat the blast, however, some of this rejected heat, to an amount representing net 5 to 10 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel used, is returned to and injected bodily into the furnace, thus rendering available for the purpose of running the furnace about 50 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel as a maximum. The efficiency with which the furnace applies this 50 per cent usefully to the objects of the reducing and smelting is another question for investigation.

Tunneling in coal mines includes driving the main haulageways or roadways which serve as the development entries. Although constituting the lifelines of these mines, little attention has been paid to development entries in the United States in terms of systematic pre-construction planning and design. Coal mine tunnels, as the terminology is used in Europe and elsewhere, are understood in the United States to be the main development entries, either in room-and-pillar mining or in longwall mining. These development entries are not tunnels in the traditional sense since they usually are of a multi-entry type involving entries and cross-cuts, and their intersections. Thus, the design of coal mine tunnels is intertwined with the design of coal pillars. This paper summarizes the results of a three-year research project aimed at improving the design of development entries in U.S. coal mining. A design approach has been developed for this purpose and design procedures for roof support in main entries and for pillar sizing are proposed.

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

Numerical calculations were made to determine the behavior of reservoirs with high-pressure drawdown and wide well spacing where the initial productivity is low and the wells are completed by hydraulic fracturing. The two-phase flow equations were solved for the flow into a single well. This well was assumed to be producing from a reservoir with hydraulically created horizontal fractures (four different systems with fractures were studied). For comparison purposes, additional two-phase flow calculations were made assuming a reservoir with uniform rock properties. The two-phase flow results were also compared with the conventional calculation methods, which do not include the effect of saturation gradients resulting from a simultaneous flow of oil and gas which are normal to this type reservoir. It was found that the conventional methods predict (1) a high and too optimistic value of ultimate recovery, (2) a high producing rate and a high reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery and (3) a low trend of gas-oil ratio with oil recovery. Included in the two-phase flow calculations were provisions to control the oil production rate by an allowable rate and, also, by a gas-oil ratio penalty rule. For the systems with hydraulic fractures, the producing rate was controlled by the gas-oil ratio penalty rule for most of the life. This is in contrast to the system with uniform rock properties which went "on decline" almost immediately. An unexpected characteristic of the systems which included fractures was the early rise in producing gas-oil ratio from 730 cu ft/bbl to approximately 1,200 cu ft/bbl, followed by a "leveling off" before the normally expected gas-oil ratio rise began. Additional features which are a result of hydraulic fracturing are (I) greater ultimate recovery, (2) higher average producing rates and (3) a lower average reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Some oil fields discovered during the past few years are producing from certain volumetric ally controlled reservoirs (often referred to as solution or internal gas- drive reservoirs) which are characterized by high-pressure drawdown at the wells. Since the available pressure drawdown at a well is limited by the static reservoir pressure and the producing rate is controlled by the available drawdown, wells completed in this type of reservoir usually produce at a rate less than the allowable from the time of completion. Because of this, this type of reservoir is referred to as a low productivity reservoir. Economic considerations require the use of wide well spacing and well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing to make commercial wells in this type of reservoir. Performance predictions for volumetrically controlled reservoirs have been made using a combination of two standard equations. 1. The "Schilthuis" or "Muskat" type material balance equation is used to relate the average reservoir pressure and the cumulative oil recovery. 2. The results from the material balance equation and the productivity factor as described by Pirson' are used to relate the cumulative recovery with producing rate and time. The material balance equation assumed uniform pressure and liquid saturation conditions throughout a reservoir. The steady-state radial flow formula allows for a pressure gradient toward a well but assumes uniform liquid saturation. These calculation methods are adequate for application to reservoirs wherein the drawdown at the well to realize satisfactory producing rates is small compared to the total pressure. In low productivity, volumetrically controlled reservoirs, the pressure drawdown at the well is large cornpared to the total pressure. Although a precise number cannot be given for the magnitude of a large pressure drawdown, values in excess of 1,000 psi would definitely be included. For practical considerations, this usually occurs when the formation flow capacity is less than about 100 md-ft. However, this limit of formation flow capacity will vary with the well producing rate. The low pressure in the neighborhood of the well which results from a high drawdown causes evolution of large volumes of gas. This causes the gas saturation to be higher near the well than at a greater distance—-hence, a non-uniform gas saturation. Also, the relationship between the relative permeability to oil (K/K) and gas saturation is nonlinear but decreases approximately in an exponential way with increases in gas saturation. Because of this, the following chain reaction is established.

UNDER the able leadership of Samuel H. Dolbear, the Committee on Nonmetallic Minerals furnished a program of sixteen papers comprising three sessions. An outstanding accomplishment in technology presented at the first session by Benjamin L. Miller and C. H. Breerwood is the application of flotation to the purification of limestone used in cement manufacture. In place of selective quarrying to provide high-grade raw material, the quarry-run stone is pulverized and treated in froth flotation cells for removal of free silica and mica. Some advantages are cheaper quarrying, more complete utilization of quarry rock, avoidance of purchasing high calcium stone, lower fuel cost and improvement in the finished cement. Paul M. Tyler presented the general subject of milling methods as applied to nonmetal lies. He pointed out the importance of some of the more recent refinements in ore dressing, and urged the need of a wider appreciation of their possibilities. IN ORDER to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. FIG. 1.-FLOW OF CURRENT IN AND AROUND A CONDUCTING BODY. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly, depends on the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of. schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1).

One of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic—for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel—but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against overwinding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of making their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained . by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption, increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but under some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting men or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any practical benefit.

There are comparatively few accurate data on the melting-or the freezing-point temperature of metallurgical slags, or on related physical phenomena, such as fluidity near the melting-point, specific heat, latent heat, etc. With the exception of the work of H. 0. Hofman,' and some older work by R. Akerman, P. Gredt, and H. M. Howe, no information is available that is of direct interest to the metallurgist. Hofman's valuable work is the only one that refers to slags produced in the metallurgy of copper and lead. The classic work of J. H. L. Vogt,2 who views slags from the standpoint of physical mixtures (solutions in which the entities are minerals), has opened up a new field in the study of slags, and has placed the investigation of such properties as melting-temperatures, etc., on a rational basis. The recent work of A. L. Day, E. T. Allen, and W. I?. White, of the Carnegie Institution, at Washington, and of European investigators3 on certain systems of silicate minerals confirms the value of the investigation of silicate series from this standpoint, and it is my aim to apply this method to metallurgical slags, in order to gain exact data of value in metallurgy. The work recorded in the present paper is the result of an investigation of reverberatory-furnace slags made for a Western smelting company to determine exactly the influence of change in composition, within comparatively narrow limits, on the melting-point. For a general discussion concerning the mineralogical character of slags and the principles on which this investigation is based, reference should be made to other work: for the subject is too large to be stated in this paper, except very briefly in the following outline:

INTRODUCTION. CULM is a general term used in the anthracite regions for many years to denote a mixture of coal, bony coal and impurities which is sent to the refuse-banks. Thus, 35 years ago culm contained the pea and buckwheat sizes of anthracite; but to-day, and as mentioned in this paper, culm is used specifically to denote the material which passes through the smallest screen in the anthracite-breaker. The smallest size of commercial anthracite is known as No. 3 buckwheat, barley, or bird's-eye coal, and is ordinarily made through a round-punched plate having openings 3/16 in. in diameter, and over a round-punched plate with opening 3/32 in. or 1/16 in. in diameter. Thus culm will consist of coal, bony coal, slate, gravel, iron pyrite, etc., ranging in size from ? 3/32 in. down to dust. Other local terms for culm are " slush," " silt," and " dirt." The first experiments towards the utilization of anthracite culm by briquetting, and the first briquetting-work done in this country, were in 1872 at Port Richmond Piers, Philadelphia, Pa., by E. F., Loiseau.1 Clay was used as a binder and the finished briquette was water-proofed with shellac, etc. Excessive cost was given as the reason for discontinuing work at this plant. The Delaware k Hudson Co., in 1876, built a plant at Rondout, N. Y., which operated until 1880. Gas-tar was used as a binder, and anthracite screenings were briquetted for engine fuel. Excessive cost, poor results in firing, and the tendency of the fuel to cut the boiler-flues were given as the reasons for discontinuing the manufacture. The next plant was built by E. F. Loiseau about 1878, at Nesquehoning, Pa., near the No. 1 or Nesquehoning colliery

Fresh water or brine drilling fluids may be kept free of suspended drilled solids by the addition of a water soluble acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer at the flowline. Addition of from .01 to 0.2 lblbbl of the polymer solution to drilling fluids containing less than 5 per cent clay solids by weight causes the solids to flocculate and settle rapidly to the bottom of the pits. Solutions of the polymer injected at the pump suction reduce the loss of water to permeable formations without impairing the permeability to oil. The use of drill-itlg fluids clarified with the polymer has resulted in increased drilling rates, extended bit life, and lower drilling fluid costs. INTRODUCTION Field experience and the results of a number of investigations have established that the accumulation of solids in drilling fluid reduces drilling rate.'-' Drilling with water makes possible higher drilling rates than can be achieved with mud but in many areas drilling with water may not be feasible because of the possibility of encountering high formation pressures or by-dratable formations. To combat these conditions, the drilling fluid must possess certain physical properties such as viscosity, density, fluid loss, etc., which require the presence of solids. The current trend in drilling fluid treatment is to maintain as low a percentage of solids as is possible without harmfully affecting the mud properties needed for drilling. Mechanical separating devices such as wet cyclones and decanting-type centrifuges are proving to be an economical means of controlling the percentage of solids and thereby maintaining low solids muds. Also: special muds have been developed for the purpose of retarding the hydration of drilled solids so that they may be more easily removed by shale shakers or settling pits. In some areas, such as West Texas, the characteristics of some formations will permit drilling with water. However, because of the dispersion of drilled solids, it is usually not possible to maintain clear water even with the aid of mechanical separators, or by utilizing large settling pits. For this reason the commonly used term "water drilling" is a misnomer since the water usually contains some solids. Because of the improved drilling rates and other benefits which might be effected, a laboratory and field study was made of the use of flocculating agents for maintaining clear water for drilling. PROCEDURE Laboratory—Solids Settling Two techniques were employed to determine the effectiveness of flocculating agents in settling solids from drilling mud. First, the rate of fall of solids was measured in graduated beakers containing mud treated with various flocculating agents. Natural gum, oil-in-water emulsions prepared with ethoxylated nonyl phenols and diesel oil. and a powdered synthetic acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer* (hereinafter referred to as "polymer") were tested as flocculating agents in both fresh water and salt saturated muds containing 4 per cent solids. The polymer was not added in the powder form directly to the muds but was first dissolved in water in a concentration of 3.5 lb/bbl. The polymer solution was then added directly to the mud. The concentration of the flocculating agents, including the polymer, was varied. High rates of fall of the solids indicated high flocculating efficiency. A second technique consisted of measuring the time in minutes required to obtain clear water at the pump suction after addition of the various flocculating agents at the flowline. These tests were made using a model mud circulating system having a total volume of approximately 10 gal. The natural fresh water and brine muds used contained 4 per cent solids. INTRODUCTION PROBABLY no other type of equipment is now being introduced into American underground mines about which less is known and about which there is more misinformation than the Diesel mine locomotive. Any equipment installed underground brings with it hazards that were not present before, and it is the purpose of this paper to show that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with safety in underground mining if certain feasible but very important precautions are taken. Diesel locomotives are not new in underground mining, since they have been used successfully in European mines for at least 19 years, but their use in American mines is exceedingly limited; so far as is known, only five Diesel mine locomotives are operating at present in United States mines. Diesel locomotives were permitted underground in Great Britain for the first time in 1939, and the rapid increase in the number in use in those mines, testifies to their safety and efficiency. More than 1300 Diesel mine locomotives are in use in European mines, according to the latest statistics; these locomotives are employed in coal, iron, lead-zinc and mercury mines. So far as is known, the Diesel mine locomotive has not yet caused an explosion or mine fire, and has not been the cause of any fatalities from toxic gases in the mines in which it has been used. ADJUSTMENTS OF DIESEL ENGINES FOR UNDERGROUND USE A Diesel engine adjusted to work in an underground mine should not be confused with the same engine adjusted for use outside the mine. Adjustment of the air:fuel ratio for engines that are used on the surface is intended to give the maximum fuel economy, and little or no attention is given to the chemical composition of the exhaust gas produced. Many such engines are poorly adjusted and perhaps poorly maintained, with the result that the engine emits smoke in quantity as well as the disagreeable odor familiarly associated with Diesel engines. The air:fuel ratio in the case of Diesel engines operated on the surface is generally around 15:1; that is, 15 lb of air to burn 1 lb of fuel. Diesel engines adjusted to work underground usually have an air:fuel ratio of about 20:I, as at this ratio the minimum quantity of toxic gases is given off in the engine exhaust. Diesel engines operated underground must be maintained in better condition than similar engines used on the surface; otherwise, the smoke emitted in the exhaust becomes objectionable if not unendurable. Practically normal air is required for safe operation of Diesel engines underground or in confined places; failure to provide virtually normal air for Diesel engine operation is almost certain to result in trouble. Bureau of Mines engineers have determined that the air in which a Diesel operates in confined places should contain less than 1/2 pct of carbon dioxide and at least 20 pct of

INTRODUCTION. IN a paper read by title at the Washington meeting of the Institute, May, 1905,1 discussed at considerable length the geological relations, node of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the Virginia-Tennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely economic phases of the zinc-ores of the district; such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle county mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and will not be considered here. METHODS OF MINING. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia was limited wholly to the surface belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of methods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.-Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;-the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular "chimneys"

The activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite at 1150°C has been determined for concentrations up to about 2.1 pct C using the equilibrium: C + COz = 2CO; equations have been derived expessing the activity as a function of carbon content on the basis of twelve mathematical models. Several of these represent the data satisfactorily. ACCURATE information on the thermodynamic properties of austenite in the binary system Fe-C is needed as a basis for studies of transformation and precipitation in steels of all sorts, alloy as well as plain carbon. The many attempts to approach this problem through statistical thermodynamics require sound and dependable experimental data in order to evaluate the several models which have been suggested. In this paper we are concerned with the experimental determination of the activity-composition relation in austenite at the temperature of its widest range of stability, approximately the eutectic temperature (1153°C). Accurate investigation of the activity of carbon in austenite may be said to have begun with the work of Dunwald and wagner.' A more detailed study was carried out by R. P. smith2 on the two equilibria: More recent work on these two equilibria has been reviewed by Chipman,3 who pointed out the experimental hazards associated with studies of Eq. [I]. Studies of this reaction involve rather small values of the ratio these are susceptible to errors due to traces of moisture in the apparatus according to the reaction: Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth4 evaluated K, for their experimental temperatures and used desiccants to control water vapor pressure. While they were able in this way to obtain consistent values for K1 it cannot be said that all of the uncertainties of the method have been overcome. Results by both methods reported by Schurmann, Schmidt, and wagener5 appear to be consistent except at very low carbon content. Reaction [2] was employed in the experimental work reported here. It is to be recognized, however, that it is not applicable to projected studies of certain alloy steel compositions involving stable oxide-formers.
