The rates of oxidation of tungsten have been determined at temperatures between 1320" and 3170°C and oxygen pressures to 1 amn using a surface -recession measurement technique. Above approximately 2000°C and 10-6 atm the rate is independent of temperature and can be calculated from gas collision theory assuming a constant reaction probability, e, of 0.06. Oxygen molecules react at surface sites where oxygen atoms have previously chemisorbed. This provides a direct pressure dependence at low pressures but at high pressures tungsten oxide molecule s form an adjacent gas boundary layer which lowers the PO2 at the tungsten surface. A correction for this effect using free-convection theory fits the rate data over the entire oxygen-pressure range from 10-8 to 1 atrn as well as data using O2-A mixtures. Below 10-6 atrn and above 2000°C, e decreases with increasing temperature because of desorption of oxygen atoms. Below 2000°C the rate decreases with decreasing temperature at all oxygen pressures following an apparent activation energy of 42 kcal per mole and depending on (Po2)n with n varying between 0.55 and 0.80. MOST of the previous tungsten oxidation studies have employed gravimetric methods and have been limited to temperatures below 1000°C where the weight loss associated with evaporation of tungsten oxides is negligible compared with the weight gain from oxidation.' At higher temperatures, oxygen-consumption rates have been determined from pressure measurements, usually at constant flow rates, by Langmuir,2 Eisinger,3 Becker, Becker, and Brandes,4 and Anderson.5 The sensitivity of this method decreases with increasing pressure and, with the exception of Langmuir's work, these investigations were confined to pressures below 10-6 atm. Above approximately 1300°C, depending on the oxygen pressure, the rate of oxide evaporation is greater than the oxide-formation rate and the recession of the tungsten surface can be measured optically without interference from an oxide layer. This was first done by Perkins and crooks6 who heated tungsten rods in air pressures from 1 to 40 torr at temperatures between 1300" and 3000°C. The present investigation of the oxidation kinetics of tungsten at high temperatures emphasizes oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 1 atm. This is the range of interest for earth atmosphere re-entry applications of tungsten for which little data were previously available. APPARATUS The apparatus is a modification of the type used by Perkins and crooks.' Ground tungsten seal rods, 6 in. long by 0.125 in. diam, were mounted vertically between two water-cooled electrodes, one fixed and the other having free vertical travel. The movable counter-weighted electrode is prevented from undergoing horizontal displacement by three sets of runners mounted at 120-deg intervals. Electrical contact is made by means of a water-cooled mercury pool. A 24-in. vacuum bell jar having a volume of approximately 267 liters was used as the reaction chamber with the sample holder mounted in the middle of the chamber. Power was supplied from an 800-amp dc variable power supply. Temperature readings were made by means of a Latronics automatic two-color recording pyrometer. With this instrument, corrections for emissivity are not necessary provided the spectral emissivi-ties at two closely spaced wavelengths are equal. Supporting measurements were made with a micro-optical pyrometer corrected for emissivity of bare tungsten and window absorptivity. The micro-optical pyrometer was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated tungsten lamp and both pyrometers were periodically checked against the melting points of tungsten and molybdenum using the oxidation apparatus. Above 10-6 atm, pressures were measured with an Alphatron gage calibrated against a McCleod gage. At 10-6 atm, a hot-filament ionization gage was employed. A magnified image of the self-illuminated tungsten rod was formed using a 360-mm objective lens mounted outside the bell jar. When the experiment exceeded 1 hr, the image was focused on a ground-glass plate about 10 ft from the tungsten rod at about X8 and the recession of the thickness of this image was monitored with a Gaertner cathe-tometer. When faster rates were encountered, a 35-mm time-lapse cinecamera with a telephoto lens and bellows extension was substituted for the ground-glass plate and cathetometer. Diameter recession rates were determined from the photograph image projected on the screen of an analytical film reader. C. H. BENEDICT, chief metallurgist of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., has pioneered for nearly half a century. Noted for his ammonia leaching process, lie has Iong been responsible for all Calumet and Hecla mill, concentrator, and reclaination plant flowsheets. His influence has spread far beyond his own organization. lie is dean of Lake Superior metallurgists and has contributed greatly toward raising his specialty-the country over-to an honored profession; not merely an honored profession but a profitable one for industry and the public. The leaching process which he developed in 1912 has, since 1915, produced for Calumet and Hecla 250,000 tons of copper from waste tailings at a cost per pound, in 1929, below five cents. It has yielded profits of $35,000,000. In the war just ended, this process proved the only one adaptable to the recovery of copper from gilding-metal¬clad steel strip, and Calumet and Hecla treated more than 50,000 tons of such scrap for the Government.

USE of oxygen in metallurgical operations was investigated by a committee of unusually able engineers more than ten years ago. A record of their work appeared under the title "The Use of Oxygen or Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical and Allied Processes," Serial 2502, Report of Investigations, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Shortly thereafter the A.I.M.E. published "Use of Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical Operations," based on a symposium at the New York meeting, February 1, 924. Quoting from the Bureau of Mines report In view of the many recent developments in oxygen manufacture, and considering the increasing cost and decreasing quality of our raw materials, the Bureau of Mines has taken the matter of the application of oxygen or oxygenated air to the metallurgical centers for consideration and has appointed an advisory committee to study the problem.

Broadly speaking, fluxes are substances which promote wetting and spreading or enhance the fluidity and manipulative properties of materials in joining, fusion, and smelting operations. The term most strictly applies to substances used to facilitate soldering and brazing; but in .he discussion which follows, the definition will be broadened to include materials used to promote fusion in arc welding and which aid in he smelting of metals. In each of the mentioned applications, the role of flux and its composition differs considerably; consequently n the discussion which follows, fluxes for soldering, brazing, arc welding, and smelting applications will be considered separately. Soldering and Brazing Fluxes Soldering and brazing are metallurgical joining processes in which a joint is formed using a filler metal of composition dissimilar to that of he joined pieces (base metal). The filler metal, older or braze, is always of lower melting point than the base metal. Consequently with these) recesses there is no melting of the base metal. The successful creation of the joint depends upon the wetting and spreading of the solder or braze around or throughout the joint. The obstacles to successful soldering and brazing are contaminants and tenacious oxide films on the metal surfaces. In soldering and brazing applications, fluxes act to remove and exclude oxides and other impurities from the joint. There is no fundamental difference between soldering and brazing. The distinction between them is made on the basis of temperature. Joining operations carried out at temperatures above 500°C are termed brazing. The higher temperatures used in brazing enable higher melting point filler metals to be used which generally provide stronger joints. The higher temperatures of brazing processes also require fluxes which are substantially different from those used in soldering and which will remain effective at high temperatures. Consequently the distinction between soldering and brazing can also be made on the basis of the fluxes used.

MINING is one of the major industries of the Rocky Mountain region and since the United States became involved in the present World War, all mines have been called upon by the Government for the maximum production of the strategic metals necessary. Operating under the most adverse conditions, such as priority requirements, slow delivery of necessary material and equipment, labor shortages, and freezing of all wages, which still permitted some industries to pay higher rates than were allowable in the mines, thereby drawing labor from the mines; and the United States Employment Service continually giving mine labor certificates of availability; these and many other problems made mine operation particularly difficult. Yet, in spite of these obstacles, the mining industry, either through its own resources or through Government subsidies in the form of loans or premium prices for strategic metal, have and still are making an all-out effort to meet Government demands. They, without question, have played a major role in assisting the war effort.

WAR has wrought sharp and sudden changes in the pattern of the oil industry. The most obvious and most striking of such changes have been in the fields of transportation and refining. A third of the world's total oil production formerly started to market, tanker-borne, over the waters of the Gulf and Caribbean. Most of this oil went to our North Atlantic ports, supply points for the world's greatest consuming center. This tremendous traffic, disrupted by the loss of tankers as a result of requisition for military purposes and by the activity of enemy submarines, has had to be substituted largely by such lines of supply as could be improvised without loss of too much time. No single solution for this gigantic problem has been found nor is it likely to be entirely solved for some time to come. It has been solved in part, however, by rearrangement, reversals, and patching up of existing pipe-line systems; by overland transport of crude and products in tank cars on a scale never before attempted; by barging over inland waterways; and through the construction at long last of the "big-inch" line, the first leg of which is just being put into operation as far as Norris City, III. The tank-car traffic alone, reaching a peak of deliveries of 856,710 barrels per day into District 1 during the week ending Sept. 19, 1942, and accomplished at an expense of millions of dollars in extraordinary transportation costs, defrayed by the Defense Supply Corp. and by the mobilization of tank cars from all over the nation, is a story worth the telling but by some of those who directed it.

ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by [P OL, plotting So = Ao as a function of eo = Lo] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors' It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented [by plotting the average true stress, S = P as a function of e = q' = log o = log Log] where P, A, L, S, e, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such- curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. This paper discusses the impact of taxes at the state and federal level on typical on-shore oil and gas exploration economics in the USA. Taxes considered are the windfall profits excise tax, state production (or severance) taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax. Also considered will be market prices for oil and gas in the USA. The effect of government take as a percent of revenue, on rate of return, discounted Payout, and discounted cumulative cash flow is shown on the attached tables. The conclusion drawn is that tax laws, while rarely the most important factor to be considered when drilling a well, can have significant impact on the profitability of oil and gas ventures, and should be considered when determining where to drill. Hypothetical exploration wells were analyzed for the impact of tax laws on project profitability. The results of this study show that when factors other than taxes are postulated to be the same (such as producing rate, capital, operating costs, and prices), cash flow can vary by as much as 68% due to the differences in the tax laws. Other significant findings for the cases studied include: (a) that discounted payout varied by as much as 1.8 years, (b) that rate of return differed by up to 67% and (c) the total tax rate as a percentage of revenue had a maximum variance of 33%.

Tests carried out with both kaolin and silica slurries show that flocculants of the polyacrylamide type can be used to improve the thickening performance of hydrocyclones. This thickening improvement demonstrates that contrary to previously held theories, flocs can be formed which are capable of resisting the shear forces in a hydrocyclone. For the 1.25-in.-diam cyclone used, optimum thickening occurs when the flocculant solution is injected into the slurry stream at or near the feed inlet. Hydrocyclones offer many distinct advantages over gravity thickeners. These advantages include simplicity, low initial and operating costs, small space requirements, and flexibility of operation. In spite of these advantages hydrocyclones have not been widely used as thickeners. The main reason for their lack of application is that hydrocyclones are unable to efficiently remove semicolloidal particles (less than 5 microns) from the suspending solution. In gravity thickeners, the fine particles can be induced to form particle aggregates, or flocs, which have the settling characteristics of large particles. In the hydrocyclone, however, it was always assumed that the existence of shear would prevent the formation of flocs.1-3 Thus, if no floc structure is retained, the thickening hydrocyclone must be designed so that its separation size is below the size of the smallest particle to be recovered. To obtain a very small separation size requires the formation of very high centrifugal forces, which necessitates the use of small-diameter cyclones. Small hydrocyclones have, in turn, very low throughput capacities which render them impractical for many industrial thickening applications. Thus, if the effects of flocculation cannot be utilized, the usefulness of hydrocyclones as thickeners remains limited to pulps which contain no very fine particles. It is well established that most substances acquire a surface electric charge when brought into contact with an aqueous medium. The repulsive interactions between similarly charged particles act to prevent flocculation. One method of flocculating a dispersion is to neutralize the repulsive surface charges by the addition of an electrolyte. The reduction of the electrostatic surface charge (Zeta potential) then permits the universal van der Waals attractive forces to operate between the atoms of the various particles and form particle aggregates. The lime additions used by thickener operators promotes flocculation by this mechanism. A second method of flocculating a dispersion is by the addition of long-chain macromolecules. In this case flocculation is brought about by a bridging mechanism in which the molecules are adsorbed with part of their length on two or more particles, thus forming a molecular bridge between the particles.4,5 The molecules also form bridges between themselves when a single particle is bonded to several polymer molecules. The type of bonding between the flocculant molecule and the particle may be hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding, or electrolytic attraction.6 The flour and glue which are used as thickener additives are believed to promote flocculation in this manner. In the past decade synthetic long-chain polymers with extremely high flocculating capabilities have been developed. The flocs formed by these new polymeric flocculants are larger and more shear-resistant than those formed by the presence of electrolytes.7 The advent of these flocculants raises the question: Are the flocs formed by these synthetic polymers stable enough to resist the liquid shearing forces in a hydrocyclone? The investigations reported in this paper were carried out in order to provide some answers to this question. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the bulk of the test work a 5% slurry of commercially available kaolin with an average particle size of 5 microns was used. An initial evaluation of the available flocculants was carried out to determine which flocculant formed the most shear-resistant flocs. A combination of the techniques used by Healy7 and Booth8 was used for this purpose. This initial study revealed that the neutral high-molecular weight polyacrylamides produced the most shear-resistant flocs. One of these flocculants, Separan MGL*, was selected and then used for all the hydrocyclone tests. The flocculant was dissolved in water and added to the hydrocyclone as a dilute solution.

Haulage is a costly feature in the operation of an open pit mine, whether it be iron, copper, or limestone. The National Iron Co. has adapted an old underground method to the open pit inclined skip haulage to bring the ore from the pit bottom to the crusher or beneficiation plant. The Rockover skip has been placed in operation where limited areas have retarded or eliminated use of long rail or road slopes. Deep and narrow orebodies subject to rapid increase in depth that discourage use of conveyor belts and necessary crushing plants are ideal for this system. The skip haulage method was developed to combine the desirable features of conveyor, truck, and rail haulage and at the same time avoid the draw- backs. The skip was designed to follow the natural angle of repose of the pit wall and can vary from 25° to 45°. Open-pit skips now in operation show that the installation is successful and provide the

A massive mudslide blocked a river in Utah, impounding a 61 m (200 ft) deep lake. Under emergency conditions, a system was designed and constructed to: (1) drain the impounded lake; and (2) provide a permanent diversion for the river around the mudslide. The system consisted of a low level tunnel, a connecting vertical shaft daylighting close to the lake shore, control valves mounted within the tunnel, and an inlet channel between the lake and the shaft. This paper focuses on the problems and concerns surrounding the inlet channel excavation and the stabilization of the remaining vertical rock walls.

T HE OPEN FORUM on this subject called by Mr. Hoover at the recent meeting of the Institute' brought out a large number of very able papers, and a very full discussion of all the problems involved. The criticisms of the bituminous industry were: 1. That it was over-developed with the possible output nearly 50 per cent. in excess of the present requirements; that during the summer there were plenty of cars and no orders, and during the winter there were plenty of orders but no cars. 2. That the mines were not properly developed from an engineering standpoint, and that the recovery of the coal varies from 50 per cent. to 95 per cent. 3. That this industry, employing over 600,000 men, could, if running full time, release 100,000 men for other work. 4. That the studies made by the engineers of the Fuel Administration showed that the cost of production increased with a loss of time and that with a 50 per cent. operation the increase in cost was about 40 per cent.

A. HUltgren, .Söderfors, Sweden (written discussion*).—From the results obtained in his own experiments as well as those of Austin and of Grube Mr. Kelley derives a general law, expressed tentatively in the following words: "whenever two metals are brought into intimate contact at a temperature at which diffusion takes place, a comparatively rapid, or abnormal, grain growth results." It is suggested that,, in order adequately to represent the facts, this definition should he restricted by the following qualifications: a and b are the two metals, b diffusing into a. A. At the temperature in question a should exist as phase a 1 having a limited solubility for b. B. The supply of b by diffusion should be sufficient, in view of the rate of diffusion into a 1, to increase the concentration of b above the saturation value in a 1 so as to cause a new phase a2 to form. (7. The phase a2 should have a range of solubility for 6, thus rendering continued diffusion possible. D. In order that the columnar grains may be preserved in the structure the phase a2 should, of course, not suffer transformation on cooling. The phenomenon thus defined may be described as progressive transformation by diffusion. Its mechanism would appear to he as follows: Fig. 17 shows a portion of the equilibrium diagram a-b, Fig. 18 the distribution of b in solution after various periods of diffusion, Fig. 19 represents the structure in cross-section of a cylindrical rod of a at the end of heating period 3. 1. The first effect of diffusion of b into a will be to establish a concentration gradient in phase a1 (1, Fig. 18). When the saturation value for the temperature of the experiment (m, Fig. 17) is reached at the surface, nuclei of, a2 of composition n will form here, and later develop into a continuous layer. Assuming that diffusion proceeds without irregularities and that transformation at any point sets in without lag—i. e., in the moment saturation is exceeded—the transformation a1-a2 will advance inwards on a cylindrical surface concentric with the surface of the rod. The discontinuity of composition at the transformation surface in the position it happens to have at the end of the treatment (3, Fig. 18) will be preserved at room temperature, if the cooling is not particularly slow, and be recorded in the structure as a marked, smooth line, in agreement with Grube's and the author's observations. The shape of the distribution curves in Fig. 18 is also corroborated by the analyses given by Grube. 2. During diffusion, since the secondary phase a2 is always in immediate contact with the saturated part of the primary phase a1, there should be very little lag in the transformation. This means that the first a2 grains formed should grow in preference to the formation of independent nuclei; in other words, columnar growth results. It does not seem necessary to assume, with Green,' whose conception of the phenomenon
