Henry C. Carlisle: This is a husband-and-wife act, in which Mary Carlisle is going to listen, and break in as often as she feels like it. I am going to describe my career as a mining engineer. We are at Nantucket, in the 75 Main St. house; The year is 1959. Q: This is something the boys and I have wanted you to do for a long time. Carlisle: After leaving Columbia in 1910, I arrived at Ray, Ariz., January 1, 1911, and rustled a job from Louis Cates, Ralph Nowland and Sprott Boyd, who were running the Ray mine. I went to work as a surveyor's helper, made $90 a month, and paid $35 a month board. I lived in a dormitory where about 25 other engineers, graduates from different colleges, were living. It was very social and you made a lot of young friends early in the game. I did not think much of the idea of being a surveyor, or even a surveyors, helper; the higher-up surveyors only got $125 a month, and had been there quite a long time. So, I asked to be changed to underground sampling, where I would see the mine faces every day and learn more about mining. In about three months, I became an underground sampler and remained at this for a year, but in three months I was promoted to head sampler, with six people under me.

With problems of diminishing ore grades and increasing cost of facilities, the mineral industry is acutely aware of the needs for improving beneficiation processes. Industry and universities are directing intensive technical effort to develop- ment of techniques with potential for using digital computers in automation and process analysis. The main problem of early attempts at on-line computer process control methods was that of economics. Now, with new advances in analysis and modeling making practical application economically important, it appears that minerals beneficiation is on the threshold of a significant jump in operating technology. In reviewing this work, particular note was taken of research and development applied to fundamental processes and the significant areas of effort where operations research techniques are used for process applications leading to the current state-of-the-art. Development of data automation and on-line control methods for process industries is deferred to the next section of this volume. This section deals with computer-facilitated mathematical-modeling development and reviews this work in conjunction with associated prior fundamental research leading to development of the methods. Flotation The 1960 state-of -the -art in flotation modeling was com- piled by Arbiter and Harris in the volume, 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation, edited by Fuerstenau1. Many workers in the field of flotation initiated their research through flotation models, and this effort has led to use of simulation and operations re search methods employing computer techniques to facilitate advance of this work. The flotation model of Imaizumi and Inoue, published with supporting data in 1962, was expanded in 1968 with the objective of developing a basis for process automation.2,3 The fundamental work of Woodburn and Loveday in 1965 has led to techniques applicable to flotation circuit design optimization.4 This analysis is described in this volume by Woodburn in conjunction with King, Buchalter, and Piper. Processing kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina is described in this article. While the major processing steps are touched on briefly, emphasis is given to the dewater-ing of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays. The dewatering steps discussed include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration and thermal drying. Particular attention is given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays. Kaolin consists essentially of the mineral kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al2O3 . 2SiO,). Commercial deposits of kaolin occur in several areas of the U. S., but approximately 90% of the kaolin produced in this country comes from Georgia and South Carolina. These deposits are of sedimentary nature and occur in a geological fall line in the Tuscaloosa formation at elevations between 300 and 450 ft above sea level. Over two million tons of kaolin clays are used by industry in the U. S. each year. A big percentage of this tonnage is used in the paper industry for coatings in making glossy and high quality grades of printing papers. In addition, large tonnages are used as pigments; as fillers for rubber, plastic and fertilizers; and in ceramics. Properties of kaolin that make it widely used in the above applications are its particle size fineness, natural whiteness, chemical stability and non-abrasiveness. In addition to these desirable properties, it is relatively inexpensive. The finer coating grades of clays range in price from $15 to $28 per ton while the coarser filler grades sell within a range of $7 to $13.50 per ton. Pure kaolin particles are small hexagonal flat platelets. Above the 2-p size, the particles usually consist of stacks of plates, while below the 2-p particle size they occur as individual flat, hexagonal plates. Since these individual platelet particles provide the most desirable coating and flow characteristics, major importance is given to particle size fractions of 2 p and smaller. Generally, coating grade clays are those with all particles smaller than 15 p and at least 70% of the particles less than 2p. These coating grades also have 50% or more of the particles smaller than 1 µ in size. The extremely fine grades of coating clay currently being produced approach the range of 100% smaller than 2p. The filler grades of kaolin have 100% of the particles passing 325 mesh but have less than 70% of their particles below the 2-p range. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the major processing steps involved in preparing kaolin clays for marketing. MINING All kaolin mining is open pit. The ratio of overburden to clay will average 3:1, but this ratio can, of course, be much higher depending upon the grade of the clay and the size of the deposit. Most of the commercially mineable deposits occur from 20 to 120 ft below the ground surface. Both draglines and pans are used in removing the overburden and mining the clay deposit itself. Serious floor heave of up to 2.4 m in a 2.4-m high mine entry was eliminated by applying the stress control method of mining, as a last resort, at the No. 5 coal mine of Jim Walter Resources, Inc., in the Black Warrior coal basin near Birmingham, Alabama. Underground observation of the first 3-room entry created using the stress control method is discussed here. The behavior of the test entry, which eliminated the heave problem, is analyzed in relation to similar studies conducted in a salt mine under similar ground conditions by utilizing finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION This paper is a conceptual resume of engineering studies that have been evaluated by the Mine Department related to production planning over the next twenty-five years. These studies have been required principally because: a) The Rio Blanco Mine, property of CODELCO- CHILE, Andina Division, faces an operational problem due to heavy snowfall in winter which enters the surface subsidence area of the cave; later melts and filters into the broken ore creating a product that is difficult to transfer through the orepasses. The phenomenon is especially serious during the spring and has been increasing over the years. This element that complicates extraction will be controlled with the procedures proposed or others that may be determined in the future. b) The mine will increase production in 1985 by 40% . LOCATION The deposit is located in the central region of the Andes Cordillera, at an altitude of approximately 3,600 m above sea level, 50 km to the northeast of Santiago. The main camp is Saladillo (at 1,300 meters above sea level) located 30 km from the mine. Due to its location, the mine is subject to heavy snow storms during the year. On many occasions the road from Saladillo to the mine is closed because of storms and avalanches. For this reason the company has self-sufficient civil facilities near the mine to cover the needs and welfare of the working force. These housing facilities are connected to the mine by underground passages. For the same weather related reason the primary and secondary crushers, and the entire concentrator complex are located underground. GEOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS Geology Based on the geologic model developed for the Rio Blanco deposit and comparing it with standard models pertaining to copper porphyries, it can be concluded that this deposit is part of the apical sector of a mega deposit and therefore the projections of the Xio Blanco cop per mine are very favorable, both in lateral area and depth. In order to confirm and evaluate these geo- logic features, an extensive drilling program was started at the Rio Blanco deposit. Diamond drill holes were drilled to depth as well as in the areas named "La Americana", "Don Luis" and "Elguin". The area explored by the drill program is 3 km long in a north-south direction and 1.5 km wide in an east-west direction. In some sections the drilling in depth reached the 2,300 m elevation mark. The lowermost level in the mine is at elevation 3,070 m. These new studies have permitted the recognition of the following lithologic units: Andesite Andesite Breccia Granodiorites, Rio Blanco and Cascada Granodiorite Breccia Quartzmonzonite Porphyry Monzodiorites and Latites Tourmaline Breccia Dacite Pipe and Rhyolite marginal ring. The mineralogical study permits the definition of three stages of hypogene and hydroterma1 alteration of importance with a time-altered sequence. These stages correspond to a late hydrothermal stage. In recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particnlarly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method1 employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high tem- peratures of 1200º to 1400ºC. (2200° to 2550°F.) caused excessive grain growth and warpage. Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930º to 1040°C. (1700º to 1900ºF.). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900º to 1000ºC., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. They reported obtaining a Chromized layer, 0.004 in. thick, on low-carbon steels. Later, Daeves4 established a relationship between the carbon content

INTRODUCTION The Jim Walter Corporation is a Florida based organization with diverse interests. They have operations in many states and overseas, but the heart of the company is in the southeast. The major part of the corporation's business is home building and everything that is related to it. In 1969, the Jim Walter Corporation gained an interest in coal mining through the acquisition of the U. S. Pipe & Foundry Company which had two slope mines to supply its requirement of metallurgical coal. In the early 1970's it was decided to enlarge the coal mining activities and work was started on the Blue Creek project. This involved sinking four new deep mines (originally there were to have been five but it was later decided that the property could be satisfactorily worked by four mines). They are all located in west central Alabama between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. They have a combined projected output of 7314 million tons of very high grade metallurgical coal per year to be reached by the mid 1980's. These new mines are all to work the Blue Creek seam which is a very gassy seam and in the area to be mined is found at between 45m (1500 ft.) and 731m (2400 ft.) below the surface. Longwall is the only practicable method of mining to produce the planned outputs in the conditions prevailing and each mine is planned to have three longwalls as the primary production system. Continuous miners will be used just to do the development work for the longwalls. No. 3 Mine is the most advanced of the mines and started the first longwall early in 1979. The second unit started in the middle of 1980 and the third is scheduled for mid 1981. The first longwall at No. 4 Mine is expected to commence production early in 1982. This paper attempts to relate some of the problems that have been encountered and the lessons that have been learned.

This symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. IN 1948 the U. S. Bureau of Mines began a three- phase program to evaluate the extent and quality of U. S. coking coal: 1) a factual appraisal of known recoverable reserves in beds of mineable thickness, 2) a study of preparation characteristics, and 3) a study of carbonization properties. A previous paper presented the methods used in assessing reserves.' Although this investigation is only partly completed, data on coking properties of the Pittsburgh district coals are now available. The results are presented in this article. When coals are selected for manufacture of metallurgical coke more factors must be considered than for any other major use, as no basic industry requires coal of such high quality and uniformity. This is particularly true in the Pittsburgh district, where blast furnace practice is based on use of cokes from high quality coals. Although it is true that inferior coals are carbonized in other industrial areas, both here and abroad, the Pittsburgh coals are the best economically obtainable in the required tonnages, even though they are not the most desirable for metallurgical use.

The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944 Sari Manue1 Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. Four counties in Indiana- LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland-have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or near high population areas and have no surface-mineable limestone deposits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Mineable seams suitable for aggregate are 120-150 m (400-500 ft) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 m (300 ft) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 m (2,000 ft) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

THERE have been a variety of theories proposed to explain the influence of dispersed second-phase particles on the yield strength and flow stress of metals, and these have been reviewed recently by Kelly and icholson.&apos; However, only several attempts2"4 have been made to develop mechanistic treatments which characterize the creep behavior of dispersion-strengthened metals, and to date these have not been fully evaluated experimentally. weertman2 and Ansell and weertman3 proposed a quantitative creep theory for coarse-grairzed dispersion-strengthened metals, based on the concept that the rate-controlling process for steady-state creep was the climb of dislocations over second-phase particles, as suggested by choeck. The theory predicted that the steady-state creep rate, <,, was proportional to the applied stress, a, for low stresses and that is a4 o for high stresses. The activation energy for creep, Q,, was equivalent to that for self-diffusion, Qs.d., in the matrix. Some limited experimental evidence in support of this theory was obtained on a recrystallized Al-Alz03 S.A.P.-type alloy by Ansell and Lenel.6 Ansell and weertman3 also developed a semiquanti-tative theory for high-temperature creep of lineg-rained dispersion-strengthened metals in order to explain their results on an extruded S:A.P.-type alloy, which had a fine-grained fibrous structure. They suggested that the rate of dislocation generation from grain boundaries was the rate-controlling process, and fitted their results to the equation: where Q, was found to be 150 kcal per mole, i.e., QC- 4Q,.d. in aluminum. Similar high activation energies for creep7-&apos;&apos; and tensile deformation" of dispersion-strengthened alloys have been observed by other investigators for S.A.P.,&apos;" indium-glass bead omosites, and Ni + A1203 alls.&apos; There is no general agreement regarding the mechanisms involved in the creep of dispersion-strengthened metals, and this is due in part to the lack of detailed studies relating the structures of crept specimens to the mechanical behavior. The present investigation on thoriated nickel was undertaken with the aim of studying the structural changes which occur during creep of a dispersion-strengthened alloy and rationalizing the observed mechanical behavior in terms of the creep structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam TD Nickel bar, which contained 2.3 vol pct Tho,. Obtained from E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co., Inc. The final fabrication treatment by DuPont consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fine-grained fibered structure with an average transverse grain size of -1 p and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 p. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (OOl), in agreement with the results of Inman eta1." All creep specimens were vacuum-annealed at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to testing. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the only structural change due to annealing was a slight decrease in dislocation density, confirming the reported high degree of structural stability.13 Furthermore, recrys-tallization or grain growth during creep was never observed. The structure typical of uncrept material (after the 1300 C, 3-hr anneal) is shown in Fig. 1. The grain boundaries are predominantly high angle and. although some areas show a tangled cell structure, the grain interiors are relatively dislocation-free. Individual dislocations are strongly pinned by the Tho2 particles; i.e., very rarely did dislocations move within a thin foil. The grey "halos" around some of the larger particles which protrude out of the foil surface arise from contamination in the electron microscoge. The Tho, particle size ranged from -100 to IOOOA, and the distribution is shown in Fig. 2. The technique used to obtain the data in Fig. 2 consisted of dissolving the nickel matrix in acid, collecting the Tho2 particles on cellulose acetate, and measuring about 1000 particle diameters in the electron microscope. Similar results were obtained by measuring about 600 particles in thin foils, an; the average particle size was found to be 2r, = 370A. Approximate figures for petroleum production in Argentina for 1929 show an increase of only about 300,000 bbl. over production for 1928. This increase is due to greater yield in the Plaza Huincul and in the Salta regions. Table 1 shows the distribution of production in the various fields of the whole country, using estimates for the later months of the year. The outlook for production remains about the same as in 1928. It is believed that in northern Argentina there are regions that contain oil, but they are yet unexplored. Notable traces of oil at depths between 1280 and 1390 m. have appeared in a 1500-m. boring in Comodoro Rivadavia, but their importance is unknown.
