IT is generally believed that the amount of diamond drilling will increase appreciably in the next decade, as the search for minerals throughout the world becomes more difficult and intense. An attendant problem may be one of short diamond supply, resulting in higher bit and drilling cost. With this background, the U. S. Bureau of Mines1 and the School of Mines at the University of Minnesota2 have established comprehensive research programs in diamond drilling. One of the several aims is the design of a more efficient bit, which would lower diamond consumption and increase rate of advance, both essential in reducing drilling costs.

Annealed Fe-Al alloys do not react readily to form AlN when held at 500ºC in NH3-H2 gas mixtures, but do so upon the introduction of dislocatims. Nuclea-tion of the nitride phase occurs on dislocation sites. In turn, the growth of the aluminum nitride particles causes the ferrite phase to yield plastically, generating more dislocations for the nucleation process. The nitride phase extracted from an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy nitrogenated at 500°C was identified as stoichio-metric aluminum nitride with a hexagonal crystal lattice. THIS investigation reveals the role that dislocations play in initiating and sustaining the nitriding reaction in Fe-A1 alloys. As early as 1931 the work of Meyer and Hobrock1 suggested that the initiation of the nitriding reaction could involve a nucleation controlled process. Recently Bohnenka2 depicted the gas-phase nitriding process below 600°C as one of mixed control limited by nitrogen penetration through the surface, by nitrogen diffusion, by aluminum diffusion, and by nucleation of the nitride phase, Fig. l(a). In our research in a comparable alloy (0.57 pct Al) at 575ºC, we have observed a nitrogenation which we feel is better described by Fig. l(b). In the case of a 2 pct-A1 alloy partially nitrided at 500°C we propose the profiles shown in Fig. l(c). For a complete and accurate description of the process, a concentration profile of the dislocation density in the test specimen would be needed. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogenization was conducted between 500" and 575°C in a variety of NH3-H2 gas mixtures on three Fe-A1 alloys: 1) zone-refined iron + 0.16 i 0.2 pct Al—levita-tion melt, 2) zone-refined iron + 0.57 0.02 pct Al— levitation melt, 3) plastiron + 2 pct Al—melted by induction heating. To demonstrate the effect of dislocations on reactivity, both cold-worked and annealed samples were investigated. All nitrogenation rate studies were conducted gravimetrically with a gold-plated invar balance4 contained in a gas-flow system. To avoid contamination of the specimens in the reaction zone of the system, the reaction chamber was constructed of high-purity dense alumina. The activity of nitrogen was fixed by specific NH3-H2 gas mixtures whose compositions were continually monitored by calibrated thermal conductivity gages and checked by chemical analysis. Variations of ± 0.1 pct NH3 could easily be detected by both methods. Throughout this paper the activity of nitrogen is defined as PN3 /PH23/2 , where PNH3, and Ph2 are partial pressures in atmospheres. Electron transmission, density measurements, and chemical analyses were made on specimens before and after nitrogenating in order to reveal structural and chemical changes. Similar studies as well as X-ray diffraction studies were conducted on nitride extractions from the nitrogenated 2 pct-A1 alloy. These extractions were obtained by the use of an anhydrous bromine-methyl acetate solution which dissolves the iron and leaves the insoluble nitrides as a residue. Hardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of partially nitrided specimens to demonstrate the extent of nitriding through the thickness of the specimens. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The nitrogen activity in the NH3-H2, atmospheres was never allowed to reach a level capable of producing iron nitride (Fe4N). Hence, the term nitriding as used in this paper refers only to the formation of aluminum nitride whereas nitrogenation refers to the total uptake of nitrogen regardless of how it is distributed throughout the alloy. The weight increases observed during the initial stage of a nitrogenating treatment are due primarily to the solution of nitrogen in the ferrite phase, particularly when starting with annealed specimens. Because this initial nitrogenation rate in the case of the 0.57 pct A1 alloy, see Figs. 2 and 3(a), was most rapid the weight change that occurred thereafter might be attributed to the nitriding reaction with the exception of a small weight increment due to the irreversible pickup of oxygen by aluminum. The oxygen (<70 ppm) came from traces of H2O and 0, in the hydrogen and ammonia gases. On the basis of discrepancies between total weight increase and the increase in the nitrogen content of the sample as determined by chemical analysis, it was estimated and later established by activation analysis, that as much as 200 ppm of oxygen were taken up by a fully nitrided Fe-0.57 pct A1 specimen at 575°C. Most of the oxygen could have been picked up from the nitriding atmosphere on the surface of the samples during cooling to room temperature. JUST four years ago, in March, 1930, Gilbert LaBine discovered the rich deposit of pitchblende and silver ore on the east shore of Great Bear Lake, 30 -miles south of the Arctic Circle, which brought a new mining district into being. His original discovery is now the property of Eldorado Gold Mines, Ltd., but other groups have been active. Vigorous prospecting has outlined a mineralized zone that extends at least 100 miles from north to south. In this area silver discoveries have been relatively common; pitchblende, as might be expected, has been harder to find, though a deposit has been located this spring nearly 100 miles south of Eldorado that may be of great importance.

AT elevated temperatures. most metals react with oxygen, sulphur, or halogen rather rapidly, although a coherent layer of the reaction product is formed and separates the two reactants from each other. The reaction proceeds, since one of the reactants or both dissolve and diffuse across the reaction product. In many cases the rate is diffusion-controlled as is indicated by the validity of the parabolic rate law of Tammann&apos; and Pilling and Bed-worth. wott and Gurney&apos; have suggested that diffusion processes also play an important part in the case of reduction reactions. This is confirmed by observations reported below. In general, however, the rate of reduction reactions is determined not exclusively by diffusion processes. Reduction of Silver Sulphide Above 179°C silver reacts with liquid sulphur very rapidly. Since the volume of silver sulphide is much greater than that of the equivalent amount of silver, a coherent layer of silver sulphide is formed in accordance with a rule established by Pilling and Bedworth.&apos; According to Wagner&apos;,&apos;&apos; silver ions and electrons migrate from the Ag-Ag,S interface across the silver sulphide layer to the Ag,S-S interface where the following chemical reaction takes place: 2 Ag +2 e + S Ag,S If silver sulphide is reduced by means of hydrogen, the equivalent volume of the reaction product, silver, is less than that of the initial substance. Accordingly, no coherent layer of silver is formed. Instead, fine filaments of silver grow from the silver sulphide surface into the ambient gas. This phenomenon has been investigated by many authors, especially by Kohlschiitter," who has also reviewed previous literature. Kohlschiitter has interpreted the observed phenomena by migration of "silver" dissolved in silver sulphide. According to Wagner,&apos; silver ions and electrons are the migrating particles. The sequence of consecutive steps involved in the reduction of silver sulphide is shown in Fig. 1. Every- where at the silver sulphide surface, hydrogen reacts with sulphur so that excess silver ions and electrons are formed, which migrate at random until they are captured by a nucleus of metallic silver. If such a nucleus lies on the surface and material is furnished only from the base, the original nucleus is pushed outward and thus a filament grows. Removal of sulphur and formation of metallic silver may also take place at different points when silver sulphide is reduced by copper. The reaction is usually formulated as: AgL,S + 2 Cu = Cu.S + 2 Ag but the actual reaction products are silver and a solid solution of the two sulphides. Primarily, excess silver and electrons dissolved in silver sulphide are formed. After a certain degree of supersaturation has been reached, nuclei of metallic silver may form. If, however, a silver foil is in contact with the silver-sulphide phase, as is shown in Fig. 2, silver ions and electrons will migrate to the Ag,S-Ag interface where they are captured. To confirm this scheme, a composite sample, with the geometry shown in Fig. 2, was made by pressing silver sulphide tablets 0.6 cm in diam and 0.4 cm high together with a copper cylinder and a silver foil in crucibles of iron, which does not react appreciably with silver sulphide at 400°C. After heating for 3 to 7 hr at 400°C. the specimens were cut normal to the phase boundaries. It was found that the thickness of the silver foil had increased from 0.01 cm as initial value to a maximum value of 0.06 cm. In the interior of the silver sulphide tablets only traces of metallic silver were observed. These observations show clearly that silver ions and electrons may migrate over distances of several millimeters before they form metallic silver. Reduction of Cuprous Sulphide by Iron The behavior of cuprous sulphide is very similar to that of silver sulphide, since the lattices of the high temperature modifications are identical, but in Cu.S there is a variable deficit rather than an excess of metal. To investigate the displacement of copper by iron, cuprous sulphide powder covered by a copper foil was pressed in iron crucibles and heated up to 800 °C for 3 to 7 hr. The concentration and activity of oxygen in liquid copper has been measured by the reversible galvanic cell: at 1100°and 1200°C for the concentration range of oxygen of 3 to 5600 ppm Measurements for approximately thirly alloys at each temperature indicate that the activity of oxygen roughly follows Henry&apos;s law, the activity coefficients of oxygen being 0.12 and 0.205 at 1100° and 1200°C, respectively. These results compare javorably with the results of seven other electrochemical and gaseous equilibrium studies on this system, the free energy of the solution reaction 1/2 O2 = O (7 at. pct in Cu, liq) being -18.10 * 0.30 kcal per gfw at 1200°C. Estimates of the standard molar free energy of formation of CupO(S) are also made. Praclicul consideration of this cell as an oxygen sensor for liquid metals is discussed briefly. SOLID mixed-oxide electrolytes which have a defect structure in the anion sublattice have recently become a very popular means by which the chemical potential of oxygen is measured at high temperatures. Since the pioneering work of Kiukkola and Wagner1 such electrolytes have been used in numerous cell studies for determining the thermodynamic properties of metallic oxides and oxy compounds, the partial pressure of oxygen in vacuum systems and other atmospheres, and the properties of oxygen dissolved in metals and alloys. The use of a solid electrolyte in a cell for a fast reliable method of oxygen determination in liquid metals would be a very important tool to the process metallurgist. In copper, for example, the oxygen content of the molten metal in the cathode furnace is a prime factor in determining the "set" or solidification profile of cast wire bars. In this investigation the activity of oxygen in liquid copper was measured by an electrochemical cell employing the electrolyte ZrO2 + 7 1/2 wt pct CaO. The cell used at 1100° and 1200°C was

Three magnesium alloys were processed in various ways to exhibit a wide variation in the ratios of yield strength and tensile strength in the rolling direction compared to the cross-rolling direction. Basal-plane pole figures were prepared from several specimens. A fair correlation was observed between the property ratios and the ratio of percent of poles oriented in the cross-direction quadrants compared to the percent oriented in the rolling-direction quadrants of the pole figures. THE modes by which magnesium crystals deform are such as to lead to marked preferred orientations in all forms of wrought products. The effect of the active modes at room temperature, coupled with these orientations, is often to produce a lower compressive yield stress compared to the tensile yield stress. The phenomenon is due to easy twinning in compression, and has been well-related to the preferred orientations as described by basal-plane pole figures of the hcp magnesium single crystal. The literature contains some information on the variation with test direction of the tensile properties of sheet, but no quantitative relationship to the observed pole figures has been established. These effects have been reviewed in the few com- prehensive treatises in English which have been written on magnesium technology and metallurgy.1°3 Roberts presents several pole figures, but no tensile-property data in the plane of the sheet. Raynor has no pole figures, but quotes Frommer&apos;s4 results. The information in Beck&apos;s compendium more or less parallels the results of Jones and powell.5 In both a Mg + 1.5 Mn alloy and a Mg + 4.6 A1 alloy, cold rolling was found not to change the general situation of higher properties in the cross-rolling direction,* than in the rolling direction. Thomas&apos;6 X-ray studies of Jones and Powell&apos;s specimens did not permit correlation of properties and preferred orientation. Ansel and Betterton7 report tensile and compressive properties on three other alloys as a function of degree of cold rolling, plus a recrystallizing anneal. As rolled, there was a change in anisotropy with degree of reduction, but all alloys were reasonably isotropic in tension when annealed. X-ray diffraction photograms illustrated the kinds of orientations present, but were not correlated with the properties. Bakarian8 has described a method of determining quantitatively a preferred orientation, and illustrated the method by applying it to pure magnesium and two of its alloys. This method was used in the present work as a basis for correlating the strength properties with the texture.

INTRODUCTION The Ramsbeck Pb/Zn Mine is located in the northern Sauerland area of West Germany, 150 km N of Frankfurt and 120 km E of Cologne. This is a vein deposit which has been worked from the middle of the 19th century to 1974. About 15 million tons of ore were mined and milled. The ore district contains several vein deposits and is roughly 14 km in length and 4 to 5 km in width. The host rocks are strata of Lower Middle Devonian age. The strata strike 60° to 70° NE and where overturned have a dip steeper than the veins (Fig. 1). The galena-sphalerite mineralization is in quartz veins, which are mineralized where they cut the "Main Ramsbeck Quartzite" horizon, a very competent host rock. Vein structures strike at 65º to 75º, dip about 20° to 25º SE and cut the quartzite at approximately 60 m intervals. The main or "steep veins" within each vein structure dip at 10º to 80° SE with an average of 30° and are offset by thrust faults dipping 5º N to 40° S with an average of 5º S. "Flat veins" usually weakly mineralized occur in the thrust faults between the "steep veins", thus forming the overall step-like vein structure. The mineralization is very irregular and changes a- long strike and down dip. It consists of thin veins of pure sphalerite and galena with quartz and pyrite. The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. When the Copper Mountain ore bodies are mined, the ore will be transported by belt conveyor on a second suspension bridge across the canyon to the Ingerbelle concentrator. BITUMINOUS COAL production for 1937 up to Nov. 27, was 400,000,000 ions, an increase of 3.43 per cent over the comparative period in 1936. The in- crease in consumption, however, was not so great as the increase in production. Stocks of coal, mostly in the hands of consumers, on Nov. 1 were 57,000,000 tons, compared to 44,400,000 tons at the same periods in 1936. The prospects were that both production and consumption for December, 1937, would be lower than for the corresponding month of 1936. , Anthracite production for the period ending Nov. 20 was 43,900,000 tons, com- pared to 48,500,000 tons for the corresponding period in 1936, or a decrease of 9.5 per cent. Three titanium alloys, known to provide a mechanically unstable p structure after quenching, were selected as material for a study of the Origin and nature of stress-induced transformation. Data from hardness and tensile tests were used to study the initiation of marten site and the effect of the transfornation and transformation products on the mechanical properties of B titanium, particularly the stress-strain relationships. With the exception that the materials investigated showed a natural aging reaction in the P condition, their behavior is analogous to that of&apos; stress-transforming stainless steels. The transformation starts after initial yielding and is essentially complete just prior to .maximum loading. Once initiated, the martensite itself is capable of propagating the transformation. The deforn-ing materials show low strength, high ductility, and a high strain-hardening exponent. In metallic systems which undergo a diffusionless transformation on cooling, it is possible to produce a similar transformatiorl by plastic deformation under special conditions. Dewez&apos; in delineating Ms temperatures for the titanium-rich end of most titanium binary systems:, established the point of intersection of Ms with room temperature for those particular alloys. Alloy compositions which would quench to mechanically unstable p were established from these data. The first investigation into the possibility of stress-induced transformation occurring in titanium met with little success. It was concluded that such a transformation in titanium was possible only under very special conditions. Continued effort in this direction, however, showed certain Ti-Mo binaries to be highly susceptible to this phenomenon. This fact was utilized by Liu to study the habit planes of martensite and by Machlin and wenig5 to study the effects of stress and plastic deformation on the P to a prime transformation in titanium alloys. The first investigation of the mechanical properties of these alloys was conducted by Holden and his coworkers at Battelle Memorial Institute.&apos; The potentiality of the alloys i3s sheet-forming material was recognized, and the data reappeared in a survey of this type of titanium material.? The initial optimism was tempered by the difficulties in obtaining homogeneous 2i-Mo alloys in commercial-size ingots. The increasing need for good sheet-forming material kept investigation in this direction active, resulting in the development of a commercial alloy of this type.&apos; This study was undertaken to obtain a clearer picture of the mechanism of stress-induced transformation in titanium. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Three alloys were selected for this investigation: one a Ti-Mo alloy; another a Ti-Cr-Mo alloy, known to deform martensitically; and the third, a Ti-V alloy with an Ms below room temperature and an Md above room temperature, but known to contain w phase in the quenched condition. The compositions of these alloys are given in Table I. These alloys were cast as 5-lb experimental ingots, employing skull melting. The ingots were hot-forged into 1-in.-round bars. Two 72-in.-thick slices were cut from each bar for hardness testing; the remainder was cut into 0.252-in. tensile blanks. The tensile blanks and one hardness disc from each bar were heated in salt to a temperature 100°F above the 0 transus, held 2/2 hr, and brine quenched. X-ray analysis showed the pieces to be 100 pct 8.* *Omega cannot be distinguished from p by the technique employed. Tensile blanks were machined to size after this treatment. The method of making coke that has been adopted at the Kaiping and other collieries in northern China resembles, to some extent, the familiar bee-hive oven process of the United States, except that a kiln with permanent sides is used instead of a closed oven, and the products of combustion are drawn off at the bottom. In building coke-kilns in China, two circular holes, 8 ft. 6 in. in diameter at the bottom and 13 ft. in diameter at the top, are excavated in the ground, and connected at the bottom by a flue, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The sides and bottom of the kiln are lined with fire-bricks, and covered with a lager of fireclay, and a rectangular opening, 6 in. by 8 in., connects the bottom of each kiln with the main flue. Around the edge of the hole, and overlapping the lining, is a wall of fire-brick extending 2 ft. 6 in. above the level of the ground. An open space 5 ft. wide is left in this wall, through which the coal is carried into the kiln and the resultant coke removed. This space, of course, is bricked up during the time that the coking-operation is being carried on. The wall is pierced with nine flue-openings uniformly placed around the circumference, each interverliilg space in the wall being strengthened with a brick buttress, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The floor of the kiln, as well as the main flue, is lined with fire-brick. Before charging the coal, it is first placed in shallow bamboo sieves, 2 ft. in diameter, and immersed in a trough 10 ft. long, and 3 ft. wide, fed with pit-water, in which it is washed by hand. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the washing is done. From 25 tons of good "dust" coal, 22.5 tons of washed coal are obtained. PRIOR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators&apos; viewpoint, but. they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company&apos;s mines possess many advantageous features that are not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 7 ½ ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.), and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of ,the stations, however, is about 75° F. (24° C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92° F. (33.5° C.).

The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.

Equilibrium arsenic contents of Pb-As alloys in contact with PbO-As2O3 slags containing less than 30 mol pct As2O3, were determined at 650°, 700: and 750 C in an inert at?rzosphere. In this temperature range, the arsenic content of the alloy increased with increasing temperature in the single-phase liquid slag region and decreased with increasing temperature in the two-phase slag region and the single-phase solid-solution slag region. The PbO-As2O3 phase diagram below 22 mol pct As2O3 was determined by thertrzal analysis and by application of a log ?As2O3/?PbO vS log XAs2o3 /x3pbO plot determined from the equilibrium actiuity data. The resulting phase diagram was not well-defined since the eutectic temperature was not detected in the thermal analysis experiments, although a region of terminal solid solubility of As2O3 was found. Results from the phase diagram determination are compared with an existing diagram in the literature. THIS experimental investigation is an extension of a study by the authors1 on the slag-metal equilibria in the systems concerned with commercial lead refining processes such as softening and dross fuming. The first part of this investigation was a study of the slag-metal equilibria in the Pb-PbO-Sb2O3 system. The only experimental work previously done on the Pb-PbO-As2O3 system was by Pelzel2,3 in which the phase diagram for the PbO-As2O3 system was determined below 50 wt pct As2O3 and the equilibrium constant for the reaction 3Pb + As2O3 + 3PbO + 2As was determined as a function of temperature. No slag-metal equilibrium data have been determined. It is due to the scarcity of information regarding the Pb-PbO-As203 system that this work was undertaken. This paper describes the determination of the slag-metal equilibria in the Pb-PbO-As203 system by equilibrating Pb-As alloys with PbO-As2O3 slags in an inert atmosphere, the effect of 1 wt pct additions of bismuth and copper on the slag-metal equilibria, and the PbO-As2O3 phase diagram both by thermal analysis and the use of the slag-metal equilibria data. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The materials used in this investigation were analytical reagent-grade and assayed as follows: 1) 99.8 pct PbO (0.014 pct insoluble in CHJCOOH, 0.02 pct not precipitated by H2S, 0.1 pct CaO, and 0.08 pct SiO2); 2) 99.95 pct As2O3; 3) 99.99 pct Pb; 4) 99.0 pct As; 5) 99.99 pct Cu; and 6) 99.97 pct Bi. Room-temperature X-ray patterns revealed no detectable impurities in any of these materials. Apparatus for Equilibrium and Thermal-Analysis Determinations. The resistance-heated crucible furnace used in this investigation employed nichrome elements and was mounted so that it could be raised to surround the reaction tube during each experiment and, subsequently, lowered. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Each charge was heated in a 3+-in.-OD by 31/2-in.-high 416 stainless-steel crucible placed in a 41/4-in.-1D by 18-in.-long fused-silica reaction tube which was closed at one end. On a shoulder around the crucible was placed a 3: -in.-OD by 12-in.-long open-end fused-silica condenser tube. The open end of the reaction tube was covered by a water-cooled brass cap with ports for 1) admitting an inert atmosphere to the system through a stopcock, 2) introducing a stainless-steel, motor-driven, paddle stirrer into the crucible, 3) evacuating the system with a mechanical vacuum pump, and 4) sampling the melt with Vycor sampling tubes. The brass cap was fitted to the open end of the reaction tube with a silicone gasket and collar clamp. The furnace temperature was controlled by a Barber-Coleman Capacitrol controller and a chromel-alumel thermocouple. Due to the corrosiveness of the melt, the controlling thermocouple also served as the measuring thermocouple. The temperature of the melt was calibrated against the controller temperature and was checked periodically during each test with a Vycor-enclosed calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouple. The temperature measurement and control can be considered accurate to ±3°C. Procedure. The charge placed in the crucible for each experiment consisted of 1000 g of Pb-As alloy and 300 g of PbO-As2O3 slag. The crucible was then placed in the reaction tube, the condenser tube was placed on the shoulder of the crucible, the silicone gasket and brass cap were fitted on the open end of the reaction tube, and the entire system was evacuated and filled with argon ten times.
