A choosy in what they would smelt. The furnace charge had to be coarse, and it had to be rich. They discarded fines in excess of about 1/10 the total weight. They wanted 10% copper content and fussed about anything with as low as 5%. They concentrated the copper content of the charge as much as they could by prior selection. They roasted off enough sulfur to further enrich the copper content of the succeeding fall of matte (a melt of cuprous and ferrous sulfides or Cu2S.FeS). Then they desulfurized the iron and fluxed it by carefully adding silica (quartz, not silicates) for a slag of lower density than the cuprous sulfide (Cu2S or white metal). After skimming off the slag, they further desulfurized the white metal by blowing the molten bath with compressed air. The result was blister copper. Yesterday Their techniques and furnaces? Some experimented with mechanically rabbled roasters, but their standard roasting practice was burning coarse sulfide ore in 250-ton heaps. These heaps, approximately 24 x 24 x 6 ft, were burned for about 75 days down to 6-10% sulfur. The turnaround time for a given roasting position was 100 days. Assuming the base was a hearth, the calculated rate of treatment was on the order of 0.004 tpd per sq ft.

THE telluride of gold and silver, the " Tellurgold-silver" of Hausmann, and " Petzite" of other mineralogists, has been found in so few localities, that a late discovery of the mineral in a new locality may not be uninteresbing. So far this mineral has been found in Europe only in a few mines in Transylvania, and in Hungary; and in the United States in the Stanislaus Mine, in Calaveras County, California, in the Golden Rule Mine, Tuolumne County, California, and in a mine in Montana, the precise locality of which I have forgot, ten. The new locality referred to is at the Red Cloud Mine, Gold Hill District, Boulder County, Colorado.

Det Norske Zinkicompani A/S was established in 1924, on the initiative of the Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines. Experimental electrothermic zinc production was carried out on industrial scale for a two-year period, but the problems of electrothermic smelting were not solved. A license for the electrolytic zinc production process was then obtained from the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. A plant for electrolytic zinc production was built, near the small fjord town of Odda in Hardanger, West Norway, The production was based on zinc ore from Spain, and cheap local hydro-electric power. The plant came into operation in 1929. Annual capacity, 36,000 tons. In 1964 a long-term agreement was concluded with Boliden AB by which Det Norske Zinkkompani is secured the raw materials basis for an expansion of the annual capacity to 100,000 tons of zinc, Since World War II, the company has been pursuing extensive research and development programs. As a result, various sections have been rebuilt: nev unloading and storage facilities, a 250 ton per day Fluid Bed Roaster with contact plant, new continuous leaching system, integrating the Jarosite Residue Process, new solution purification section - upgrading the solution quality for a 600 Amp/m2 current density Tank Room operation -, installation of induction furnaces for cathode melting with casting machines and automatic stacking of slabs. Simultaneously, instrumentation, and methods of automatic control have been developed and introduced, providing conditions for optimal plant operations.

MORE and more attention is being paid to the bonding of metals in their solid states. For a better understanding of this technique for joining metals and how it is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and time at temperature and pressure, a detailed report concerning nickel to aluminum bonding has been published.' In order to broaden the knowledge accrued, some additional work concerning solid state joining of aluminum to copper and aluminum to zirconium was performed. The investigation of the Al-Cu system was considerably more extensive than the investigation of the Al-Zr system. For the A1-Cu system, not only were tensile sudies made but intermetallic penetration rate investigations also were carried out. The effect of temperature on intermetallic penetration rate for the A1-Cu system was determined at 11 tsi pressure, held 2 min. Procedure Apparatus: The hot pressing technique was the means of solid state reaction used and required the equipment depicted in Fig. 1. The following procedure was involved: The two metals to be reacted were placed in an aquadag-lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diam made of the same material. A thermocouple well was located in the die body 3½ in. down from the top of the die, while another well was located centrally in the bottom punch 8½ in. from the bottom of the die. This die assembly was located in three cylindrical ceramic heating furnaces placed in tandem. Each furnace was controlled individually by a Variac power transformer. In turn, the die and furnaces were placed in a water-cooled stainless steel pot which could be evacuated. A cover, which contained a centrally located Wilson seal with an 18-4-1 1 in. diam ram running through it, was bolted on the pot. After sealing, the pot was evacuated by a roughing pump to 200 microns pressure, after which a diffusion pump was used to bring the pressure down to 5 to 15 u. At this pressure, the furnaces were turned on. As soon as they started to heat, out-gassing of the entire unit raised the pressure to 30 to 400 p. By the time the specimens were at temperature ready to be pressed, approximately 4/2 hr, the vacuum pumps had re-established the 5 to 15 u pressure. Once the desired temperature was reached, the required pressure was applied for a predetermined length of time to the 1 in. ram, through to the top punch, and to the specimen. When the time for keeping the specimen under pressure had elapsed, the pressure was released, the energizing coil current turned off, and the assembly allowed to cool. After cooling, the die was removed from the pot and the specimen was ejected. Specimen Preparation: Two different types of specimens were made for this investigation. One was for subsequent tensile testing, while the other was for determination of intermetallic alloy zone penetration into the parent metals. Tensile Bars—Commercially rolled copper pieces in. thick or zirconium sheet pieces 1/32 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam were placed between commercial 2-S aluminum rod 1 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam. This sandwich in turn was slipped into a 2-S aluminum sleeve 1.438 in. OD and 1.370 in. ID. This sleeve lined the couple up and prevented the aquadag lubricant from getting in between either the A1-Cu or Al-Zr interfaces. Immediately prior to the specimen assembly, the copper or zirconium was abraded on the flat surfaces with 320 grit silicon carbide paper, producing clean smooth surfaces. The aluminum was chemically cleaned just before assembly by: l—degrease in acetone, 2—distilled water rinse, 3—immersion for 3 min in 5 pct NaOH at 70" to 80°C, 4—distilled water rinse, 5—immersion for 2 min in 50 pct HNO3 solution at room temperature, 6—distilled water rinse, and 7—drying in a blast of gas. After the A1-Cu sandwiches were hot pressed and ejected, the specimens were machined such that the aluminum sleeve was removed, and the remaining aluminum was then threaded; the bar so produced was tested later for tensile strength. In all the instances where Al-Cu couples were tested, the specimens broke during the test at the Cu-A1 interface and never within the aluminum or copper. The ultimate tensile strength values at times showed considerable scatter for a set of given reaction conditions. Because of this, as many as three to five specimens were made for a particular set of conditions. The trend of the average tensile strengths obtained was not as conclusive as was the trend of the maximum tensile strengths, the latter values being obtained under optimum reaction conditions. Therefore, the values of ultimate tensile strength given herein are maximums.

EARLY investigations1 of the tensile properties of fcc single crystals did not reveal the easy glide region of crystals with axial orientations inside the standard stereographic triangle. With the production of high-purity metal, a region of easy glide became known1 Consequently, modern work of fcc single crystals ordinarily uses high-purity metal. In order to determine whether further purification of aluminum beyond 99.992 pct purity would result in significant alteration of the tensile properties of single-crystal specimens, metal was zone-refined and crystals grown from the purified material were compared to crystals grown from the original material. Some similar studies were made of gold and silver crystals. Aluminum. The material to be zone-refined was cast into bars 1/4 by 1/2 by 8 in. A zone, approximately 1-1/2 in. in length, was passed over each bar eighteen times at a rate of 6 in. per hr. Melting and stirring were carried out by an induction heater under a vacuum of approximately 10"5 mm Hg, the metal being held in a graphite container. he last 3 in. of each processed bar were then cut off and discarded. No quantitative determination of purity was made, but the effectiveness of the zone refining was tested by a method first suggested by Walton, Tiller, Rutter, and winegard3 depending on the relation between cell structure and impurity content. Rutter and Chalmers4 have shown that a cellular substructure is associated with the presence of impurities during solidificatibn, and have shown how solute rejection at the freezing interface can lead to such an association. Thus the observation of cells gives evidence of impurities being present. To look for cells, the last quarter of a zone-refined bar was cut off, remelted, and grown rapidly into a single crystal. It was then heavily electropolished and thermally etched.~ Cells were revealed by the presence of many parallel rows of etch pits. The same process was carried out with material from the first half of the bar, but no cells were detected. These observations give evidence that a significant amount of impurity material was moved to the "dirty" end of the zone-refined bars. Further indication of purification was obtained from recrystallization experiments. It was found that, after cold rolling to a 97 pct reduction in thickness, the material from the pure end of the bar re-crystallized at room temperature, but the material from the "dirty" end did not. Other investigators6 have previously reported that zone-refined aluminum recrystallized at room temperature. The purified material was cast into 1/4 by 1/4 in. bars, and seeded crystals were grown in a (100) orientation and in a single slip orientation where the Schmid factor is m =2. The crystals were then cut to the desired length, annealed for 24 hr at 610°C, furnace-cooled, and etched in Tucker's etch. The crystals were tested in a floor-model Instron machine, using a gage length of 4 in. and a strain rate of 1/2 pct per min. The resulting curves are shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the differences between the curves for zone-refined and original-purity materials are small. These differences are within the scatter observed for crystals of the original purity. In particular, the zone refining does not significantly affect the onset of the different "stages" of the curves.

THE large difference in the X-ray scattering factors for molybdenum and manganese makes the o- phase in the Mn-Mo system an interesting one to study with respect to ordering of the atoms. Such a study has been carried out using data obtained from a powder sample, and the resulting evidence for ordering in this compound is presented here. It is not possible, of course, to obtain all the details of structure for a u phase from powder data only. Most difficult of all would be the determination of precise atomic parameters. There is reason to believe, however, that the atomic parameters do not vary greatly in the different s'S and that the precise values obtained from one s structure would then allow decisions as to the ordering of atoms to be made when there is a large difference in scattering factors. In particular, the powder intensities for Mn-Mo s are for the most part in good agreement with those observed for Co-Cr, for which single crystal studies have been made by the authors.' There are a few marked discrepancies in the intensity comparison of the two s's, and these cannot be removed by adjustment of the parameters. They are interpreted as resulting from a more pronounced effect of ordering of the atoms. Accordingly, the parameters of Co-Cr s' have been used for the calculations of the Mn-Mo intensities. For Co-Cr, the space group is D4h14-P4/mnm with atoms in the following positions: 1—2 in (b); 11—4 in (f), with x=0.1031; 111—8 in (i), with x= 0.3713 and y=0.0370; IV—8 in (i), with x=0.5662 and y=0.2396; and V—8 in (j), with x=0.3160Y and y — -0.250. The unit cell is tetragonal, with an==9.10A and cn=4.74A for the Mn-Mo u phase studied here.

DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth's surfaces, Chuquicamata's water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata's water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. In a zirconium {1121} twins tend to have coherelzt boundaries and thus do not usually taper to a point when they intersect a grain boundary. Under the proper conditions, a (1121) twin may deform a boundary in such a manner as to clearly rcveal the twinning shear. Measurements of these grain-bounrlary rotatzons yield a value of 0.63 for the (1151) twinning shear. The magnitude of the observed shear and its shear sense are in excellent agreement with the assumption that the second undis-torted plme (K2) for this form of twinning is the basal plane (0002). The present value of the tzvinninz shear, which is approximately three limes larger than Rapperport&apos;s value? is in excellent agreement with reported results of Sokuskii and Prolsenko.5 RECENTLY westlake&apos; reported a study of the twinning modes of zirconium based on ~ap~er~ort&apos;s2 values for the twinning elements. He observed that two of the modes, (1012) and {1122), can be explained by relatively simple dislocation models. A workable model for (1121) twinning, however, proved to be very complex and questionable. Because Rapperport&apos;s second undistorted plane, (K2), for (1121) twinning has large indices, {ll2l6), it is possible that the difficulty in defining a model for (1121) twinning lies in an incorrect value for K2. A measurement of this twinning element has therefore been made, using a method based on observations of the shear displacement of grain boundaries at positions where they are intersected by (1121) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The zirconium specimens were deformed in tension on an Instron machine either at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77ºK), or prestrained at liquid nitrogen temperature and then further deformed at room temperature. Straining at 77°K was employed in order to nucleate (1 121) twins in large numbers, since simple ropm-temperature tensile deformation favors (1012) twinning. Specimens were machined from 1/2-in.-thick plate. The material was arc-melted sponge zirconium annealed to an ASTM grain size 4 and containing, in parts per million, 380 Fe, 880 0, <40 Hf, 32 N, and < 5 H. The specimen gage length and diameter were 1.25 and 0.130 in., respectively. To insure a gage section initially free of twins, the last 60 thousandths of the specimen diameter was removed by acid machining.

IN 1948, the writer and his associates determined the surface tension of solid copper by balancing the force of surface tension in a very fine wire against an external load.&apos; At that time we, in common with other early workers, assumed that grain boundary energy in a pure metal is very small in comparison to the energy of an external surface. Accordingly, we neglected the internal surface energy of the coarse-grained specimens. Since that time, experimental evidence has accumulated showing that grain boundary energy, far from being small, is generally about one-third of the energy of an external surface.2-4 This is sufficient to introduce a significant error into our determination. The differential equation governing equilibrium is: wdl - yds, + y*ds2 [I] rather than wdl = yds as originally written. w is the balancing force in dynes, 1 the length of the specimen, sl the external and s2, the internal surface area, y the copper/ copper vapor surface tension, and y* the grain boundary tension. Fortunately, we had made for another purpose a careful study of the size and shape of the grains, and found that the boundaries, with rare exceptions, traversed the specimens and were perpendicular to the wire axis. For this case, eq 1 leads to w = rry -(n) r2y* [2] where r is the wire radius and (n is the number of grains per unit length. A count of some twenty 5-mil wires indicated that - n became 80 & 10 after a short anneal near the melting point, and remained nearly constant for as long as 96 hr at temperature. An assumption of y* = 1/3y leads to a defining eauation for r: [31 The term in the brackets may be considered a correction factor applied to eq 11 of ref. 1. Upon applying this factor, the surface tension of solid copper at its melting point is found to be 1650 & 100 dynes per cm, rather than 1370 as previously reported.&apos; The new temperature coefficient is —0.55 dynes per cm per "C. Grain boundary energy is more significant than surface energy to the physical metallurgist. It is evident from eq 2 that a series of experiments with wires of different grain size can lead to an evaluation of y*. The details of such an experiment are being worked out now. References 1 H. The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

In Au-Ag alloys the critical resolved shear stress Tc. at room temperature is essentially a parabolic function of atomic concentration:&apos; the 50 at. pct Ag-50 at. pct Au alloy is about 10 times stronger than the pure metals. This strengthening occurs in spite of the similarity in valence and atomic size. Solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals is characteristically greater at low temperatures than at room temperature. In Ag-10 at. pct Au and Au-10 at. pet Ag; r, (20.4K)/Tc (300°K) is 2.3 and 2.5. respectively.- compared to 1.2 in pure silver.3 Suzuki&apos; and Flinn5 explained the alloy strengthening at room temperature as a combination of Suzuki locking and short-range order hardening. The agreement between the computed and measured strengthening was very good: however, in Ag base-A1 alloys Hendrickson and Fine6 concluded that Suzuki locking resulted mainly in a yield drop effect. Recent reviews of the solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals by Fleischer2 and Haasen8, 9attributed the strengthening at room tenl-perature to the combined effect of atom nlisfit and change in shear modulus 011 the long-range stress field surrounding a dislocation. The parameter used by Fleischer was The shear tnoduli of Ag-0 to 6 at. pct Au alloys were measured by Pur-wins. Labusch. and Haasen.In While addition of 4 at. pct Au caused an appreciable increase in the C,, elastic constant. there was a decrease on increasing the solute to 6 at. pct Au: C,, and C :: were not measured in the 6 at. pct alloy. The greater solution hardening at low temperatures implies the presence of short-range interactions between the solute atoms and dislocations These include size and electronegativity effects. Whether the extra alloy strengthening at low temperatures is due to locking or friction hardening is still a controversy."".&apos; In the present research the stress-strain behavior of Au-Ag single crystals containing 1 to 5 at. pct Ag and 1 to 5 at. pct Au was measured vs strain rate and temperature down to 4.2&apos; K. An internal-friction profile induced by nitrogen in Cr-35 at. pet Re was studied as a function of nitrogen concentration and heat treatment. From these studies, the solubility of nitrogen in this alloy was deduced. The equilibrium solubility of nitrogen in chromium does not appear to be substantially changed by the addition of 35 at. pet Re to chromium. However the precipitation kinetics of nitrogen from solution are significantly decreased. IT has been found that rhenium has a beneficial effect on the low-temperature ductility of Group VI-A metals. As part of a study to investigate the mechanism of this increased ductility, it was of interest to compare the concentration of interstitials retained in solution in one of these ductile bee alloys with the concentration retained in solution in its base metal. In this regard, a study of the solubility of nitrogen in ductile Cr-35 at. pet Re was selected for this phase of the investigation because the solubility of nitrogen in the base metal, chromium, has been determined over a fairly large temperature span.1-3 In addition, nitrogen is known to have an embrittling effect on chromium,4 but does not appear to have a comparable embrittling effect on Cr-35 at. pet Re.5 The experimental method selected for this study was the measurement of internal friction. This technique allows interstitial-concentration measurements to be made in bee metals that are sensitive to small changes in the concentration of a particular interstitial, even when other interstitials are present. When subjected to a cyclic stress, interstitial atoms in solid solution give rise to an internal-friction peak whose origin is the stress-induced ordering of interstitials into preferred lat- tice sites. These internal-friction peaks signify a dissipation of elastic energy which is greatest when the period of oscillation is comparable with the relaxation time for the attainment of an equilibrium interstitial distribution. For dilute interstitial binary alloys, the height of the internal-friction peak is proportional to the concentration of interstitial atoms in solid solutions. snoek8 has shown that the internal friction, Q-1, may be expressed by the equation where A is the relaxation strength, ? is the angular frequency, and 7 is the relaxation time. The relaxation strength, A, is proportional to the concentration of interstitials taking part in the relaxation if no interaction occurs between solute atoms. Thus values of peak height, which can be determined as a function of temperature, give a measure of the relative concentration of interstitial atoms in solution at various temperatures. If equilibrium has been attained, the peak heights will be proportional to the interstitial solubilities. The constant that relates A to the interstitial concentration can be determined experimentally from peak-height measurements as a function of concentration for specimens of constant crystallographic orientation. When this has been done, Q-1 measurements can be used to determine solubilities according to the equation C - KQ-1 where C is the soluble interstitial concentration and K is a constant that can be experimentally determined. It is possible, however, that lattice imperfections may bind interstitials to certain lattice sites. Internal friction does not measure these interstitial~, but does measure interstitials which are free to move in the normal lattice sites when subjected to an applied oscillating stress. The overall success of many strip coal mining operations depends primarily upon the efficient use of draglines to remove overburden. These machines require enormous capital investment and unless used efficiently the profitability of a venture is adversely affected. It is important that the dragline works continuously and it is imperative that the walking path and other facets of its operation be predetermined exactly so that the desired production rate is achieved with a minimum of non-productive time. Details of dragline operations which are of particular interest are walking path, prediction of best cut and positioning to maximize production, the angle of swing which produces the swiftest operation, optimum fill factor allowable for the type of material and conditions of ground, the maximum depth from which it can excavate and operating level with respect to the elevation of the high wall. The aims of the present paper are: 1. To establish a cut-off point in the cost-depth ratio. 2. Predict the most economic method of stripping in a given area using graphical plots of walking path implemented with information necessary to ensure optimum production. The optimum operating efficiency of the dragline in relation to the terrain and other conditions imposed on its operation will be evaluated. The model is based upon operating data which has been collected from site observations of a large strip coal mining operation in Central Queensland, Australia.

In addition to the humanitarian aspects of a dust-control program, certain economic benefits are becoming more fully recognized and now furnish a greater incentive to the mill operator to eliminate the dust from his plant. It is well known that a favorable working environment promotes increased efficiency and improves the morale of employees, with a consequent decrease in labor turnover rates. One progressive mining company&apos; estimates its direct and indirect labor turnover costs at from $40 to $50 per man; for skilled labor, such as machine operators, the cost may approach $100 per man. While these figures may not be typical of every plant, they do indicate a potential savings in operating costs. Dust signifies waste; its elimination decreases maintenance costs of mechanical and electrical equipment; its recovery is often justified from the standpoint of values contained in the collected material, although in large-scale milling operations handling low-grade ore this may not be an important factor, Perhaps the most significant trend in industrial sanitation is that dust-control equipment and procedures are becoming recognized as integral parts of the mill flowsheet. Exhaust ventilating systems are now afforded equal care in design and maintenance to that given other machinery more closely related to the Process. Methods of Dust Control "Dust control" is a general term descriptive of a number of methods used singly or together to prevent particulate atmospheric contamination. These methods are: in order .of their desirability, as follows: 1. Change of process. 2. Isolation of process. 3. Wet methods. 4. Ventilation. a. Local exhaust ventilation. b. General ventilation. 5. Personal respiratory protection. In ore-concentration plants it is seldom prac tical to change a process to eliminate the dust it creates It is possible in some cases to isolate a particular dust-producing operation from the rest of the plant, provided that constant attention on the part of the operators is not required. Frequently water is used in fine crushing and fine grinding, primarily to facilitate the processing of the ore and incidentally to allay the dust produced. Wet methods, however, are not feasible in coarse and secondary crushing operations, because of the relatively great volume of water required in instantly wetting each freshly fractured rock surface. Such quantities of water would entail conveying and storage difficulties. Local exhaust ventilation is the most effective and most commonly applied control measure, wherein directional air currents through the zone of dust production draw the contaminants into a duct system. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of reliable information on exhaust ventilation is available.2-5 of necessity these publications are rather general, being primarily concerned with engineering fundamentals. Graton, Cambridge, Mass.—The subject of chalcocite occur; rence and its geological significance has, of course, a very important commercial bearing, as shown by the recent remark of a hard-headed mining .man: "This secondary enrichment business is one thing you geologists have put up which we can hang on to, and come out right." Most enrichments of copper ores depend upon the formation Of chalcocite from leaner sulphides. Recently it has been shown that not only does there exist this secondary or derived chalcocite, * but that in certain ores the mineral is present as an initial or original constituent, which therefore we may call primary. The desirability of distinguishing between these two kinds of chalcocite is evident and has recently been emphasized. That constitutes the first problem in this connection. I believe many who are working upon secondary enrichment of mineral deposits are giving much attention to that particular question. It is now possible to distinguish primary from secondary chalcocite in many cases. In such cases, what do we know of the&apos; conditions under which this secondary or derived chalcocite was formed? , This is the second main question in connection with the subject. It is now plain, at least in many instances, that the formation of this derived chalcocite represents a phase of oxidation if we have in mind the primary ore as the thing acted upon. The next important question—and it is most important—is: does such oxidation go on above the zone where the rocks are saturated with water—that is, above the water level—or below, or indiscriminately above and below? Many of you have, or have had, opportunities to study at first hand, day after day, occurrences that&apos; enable valuable conclusions to be drawn upon these and other important questions concerning the formation and significance of chalcocite. It is greatly to be hoped that your testimony will be made available and undoubtedly it will go far toward clearing up some of these doubtful points. John D.
