A copper alloy containing- 25.5 at, pct Zn and 19.0 at. pct Ni, which was previously found to show an anoma1old.s hardening effect on quenching- from 600 "C and aging- at 400oc, has now been examined by neutron diffraction. No evidence of long-range order was found. The aged sample showed diffuse scattering- consistent with clustering. The anomalous hardening effect is now attributed to lattice strains caused by clustering rather than (long-range) order hardening. SOLID-solution Cu-Ni-Zn alloys (the commercial 'nickel silvers") have been reported to show anomalies in: change of resistivity on cold working,1-6 temperature coefficient of resistance,2-12 resistivity at low temperatures,13,14 parameter (vs temperature),2"4 calorimetric data,2,4 specific heat,15,16 dilation,2-4 and elastic modulus.17 The structure responsible for the anomalies is produced by annealing typically near 400°C and is rather loosely referred to as the ('K-Zustands" (K state), a term coined by Thomas1' who apparently meant simply that the arrangement of atoms on the sites deviated from that expected statistically. Thomas proposed that the K state occurred in a variety of (solid-solution) alloys such as Cu-Ni-Zn, Ni-Cr, Ni-A1, Ni-Cu, Fe-A1, and Fe-Si and is recognized because its formation is strongly temperature-dependent and results in an increase in electrical resistance which can then be decreased by cold working. Later workers on ('nickel silver" have interpreted the K state variously as short-range order, long-range order. or a combination. The present work was prompted by the discovery by Phillips and Jones19 of a substantial hardening effect when an 18 pct "nickel silver" alloy which is fairly close to the Cu2NiZn composition, was reheated in the range 150" to 450 C after previously quenching from 600°C or, alternatively. was slow-cooled from 600°C or above. The phenomenon was attributed to (long-range) order hardening. Due to the similarity in the atomic scattering factors of copper. nickel, and zinc atoms, the ''nickel silvers" are unfavorable for X-ray diffraction studies aimed at detecting ordering. Nevertheless Bialas et a1.,20 using a powder sample containing 47.96 wt pct Cu, 24.03 wt pct Ni, and 27.98 wt pct Zn, slow-cooled from 400" to 200°C taking 500 hr, observed weak super lattice lines. Further unpublished work" using an anomalous dispersion X-ray technique indicates that zinc atoms are regularly ordered at the corner points of the lattice cell, while the nickel and copper atoms are statistically distributed on the remaining sites. Köster 17 also observed X-ray superlattice lines, for example, in an alloy containing 43.5 wt pct Cu, 28.6 wt pct Ni, and 27.9 wt pct Zn superimposed on the basic fcc cell with a = 3.62 kX. He proposed a Cu3Au-type superlattice with the Ll2 structure in which the A sites were statistically occupied by copper and nickel atoms and the B sites by zinc. He adds that substitution must be possible so that zinc atoms partly occupy A sites. Below about 35 pct Cu, Koster had some evidence for a CuAu-type superlattice with the Llo tetragonal fcc structure with a = 3.82 kX, c/a = 0.88 which could be preserved by quenching. This is suggested17722 to correspond to CuNiZn. While the present work was in progress Hirabaya-shi et a1.23 made an independent comprehensive neutron-diffraction study of a single crystal containing 50.05 at. pct Cu, 26.57 at. pct Ni, 0.25 at. pct Mn, 0.13 at. pct Fe, balance zinc. The presence of manganese and iron is surprising since the crystal was supposedly grown from high-purity metals. The homogenized crystal showed evidence of long-range ordering after an anneal of 5 months at about 300°C. Three possible crystal models were proposed. A curious feature of their results23 is that they could not find any neutron-diffraction evidence of ordering in a powdered polycrystalline near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy. There appears to be some essential difference between a near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy and one somewhat further off stoichiometry as used by the present authors. Thus Sato14 was able to reproduce the low-temperature resistivity anomaly reported by one of the authors13 on the present alloy if he used a similar composition, but found the normal behavior of the residual resistivity in a near-stoichiometric alloy. satol2 found that the resistivity of a cold-drawn slightly off-stoichiometric alloy increased to a maximum on isothermally annealing at 300°C and then decreased ("over-aged"). Since he could not explain this on the basis of ordering phenomenon, he proposed that zinc atoms were segregating to stacking faults (Suzuki effect) and found etching bands on the surface by replication which were attributed to the widening of faults. Sato suggested14 that the hardening effect observed by Phillips and Jones19 is partly due to the Suzuki effect. THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, 'the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other's lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.

WORLD production of silver in 1929 totaled 256 million ounces. In 1928 production was 258 million ounces, and in 1927, 254 million ounces. With an actual decrease in the amount of silver produced last year, as compared with 1928, and an increase over 1927 of less than one per cent, obviously there has been no overproduction of the metal in the popular sense. But the price of silver tells a different story. For 1927, the average quotation was 56.37 cents; it was 58.17 in 1928, and 53.0 in 1929. During the last year it reached a high point of 57 cents in January, and fell steadily, without interruption to the downward trend, to a low of 47 cents in December. Since then it has dropped to an all time low of 43 cents on February 6.

SILVER is not only of paramount importance to millions of people as a medium of savings and to other millions as a medium of exchange, but it is also valuable and useful in industry. Mexico continues to be the largest producer of this metal, followed by the United States, Canada, and Peru. The largest consumers are China and India, which normally absorb about two-thirds of the world's mine production, hoarding it as savings. The imports by these countries exert a powerful influence upon the price, yet neither country is on the silver standard. China having abandoned it in 1935 and India in 1893, when the rupee was definitely linked to the pound sterling. Other nations such as Persia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and many of the South American countries either have been on the silver standard or have used silver as their chief circulating medium, and most large nations use it for subsidiary coins, this use accounting for 20 to 30 million ounces annually. The arts and industries have consumed 35 to 40 million ounces each year.

DURING the past few years a marked refinement has taken place in the design of electric power shovels for the mining industry, increasing their digging ability and speed of operation without adding to their total weight. The increase in pay load has been accomplished by a more rigid engineering analysis of shovel design, involving the adoption of new special alloy steels, new sections, and new welding methods. Emphasis has been placed on lightness with increased strength, which is most clearly shown in the front-end equipment where dipper, handle and boom are new in design, material, and construction.

AUSTRALIANS and New Zealanders, whose countries have respectively yielded gold to the value of £666,000,000 and £96,000,000, are taking full advantage of the current high prices for that metal. There is a marked activity in ordinary prospecting, geophysical exploration, further development of working mines and reopening of old properties, formation of new companies, installation of new equipment and processes, and expansion of operations generally. Australian gold production last year was approximately double the quantity of 1929 and its value three times as great, 1929 being the low of recent years. The 1933 production was about 821,000 oz. From New Zealand, 165,000 oz. was exported last year. Papua and New Guinea contributed slightly over 100,000 oz. What the future price of gold will be nobody knows, but, even if it returns to the former level, Australian producers are almost sure of 110 shillings an ounce until 1940 through the Commonwealth Government's Gold Bounty Act, at present temporarily and necessarily suspended from operation.

WHEN finely divided ferrous sulphide, FeS, is roasted at a moderate, carefully regulated temperature, the iron and sulphur are oxidized, the first products being probably ferrous oxide and sulphurous acid. In the presence of oxygen of the air the ferrous oxide soon becomes ferric oxide and in the presence of oxygen and the ferric oxide the sulphurous acid oxidizes to sulphuric acid. These facts are well known, having been established by Plattner many years ago. As a further reaction, some of the sulphuric acid parts with a portion of its oxygen to oxidize more ferrous oxide to ferric oxide, and a portion of it escapes uncombined or else unites with the iron oxides to form sulphates. Ferrous sulphate is usually soon oxidized to ferric sulphate and if the heat becomes sufficient this is then decomposed into sulphuric acid and ferric oxide. As a result of these reactions a mass of more or less pure ferric oxide is formed which is generally made porous by the escaping gases and, if rabbled properly, practically all the sulphur is expelled. If ferric sulphide or ordinary pyrites, FeS2, is roasted, a portion of the sulphur sublimes and usually burns to form sulphurous or sulphuric acid, although at times and under favorable conditions some of the sulphur is driven off uncombined and can be collected as such. Under ordinary methods of roasting, however, only a small portion escapes combustion. By the combustion of the sulphur an increase of heat is de¬veloped and, as a consequence, the reactions mentioned take place more rapidly and actively-more sulphuric acid is formed and the oxidation is more complete-nearly all the iron being left as ferric oxide with practically no sulphate or ferrous oxide. When the iron sulphide is in lumps the roasting proceeds generally as with fines, but with some changes due to mass. The

FOR years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually, many miles from an assay-office. If, upon examination, the formation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had " optioned" the property ! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. To carry the usual complete assay-paraphernalia over such mountain-trails was impracticable by reason of the loss of time involved, the great expense of transportation (charged according to weight), and the fact that a few such trips would almost certainly wreck the outfit. For these reasons I began a process of elimination and substitution which finally enabled me to carry, in an ordinary 26-in. valise, sufficient apparatus and supplies for, say, 100 assays of adequate commercial accuracy. (New York Meeting, February, 1913) This old and well-known method of determining, silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its-ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a, description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, acid because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a determination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained.

POWDER metallurgy has been established for some time as a novel method for manufacturing a great variety of articles generally specialties that could not be made conveniently by any other method. In this category are such parts as porous hearings cutting tools of sintered carbides, and electrical contacts in which the metallic constituents do not tend to alloy in the proportions employed. The industry, however, is now at a stage where it has begun to manufacture articles that can and have been made by other methods. Thus, powder metallurgy is now preferred technique for the production of numerous machine parts characterized by high strength, accuracy of configuration, and substantial lack of porosity. Manufacture of such machine parts from metal powders has no doubt been stimulated by the war, although the trend in this direction has been apparent for several years. In any case, quantity production of high-density precision pieces by ponder metallurgy is now in full suing in the United States, and such production can and should continue to expand during and after the war.

I. INTRODUCTION. In presenting, this paper the writers wish to call attention first of all to the fact that the electric furnace was not developed as a competitor of the combustion furnace, but: 1. For the purpose of doing high-temperature work which it is not possible to do in the combustion furnace; and 2. For the treatment of ores from deposits which. are located in regions where fuel is scarce and costly, and where hydro-electric power is comparatively cheap, as is the case in Chili, in Canada, in certain parts of this country and Mexico.. This paper is not presented with the idea of trying to. prove that the electric furnace should replace the reverberatory or the blast furnace as used at present in the smelting of copper ores, but that it may be substituted for their in those localities which are not favorable to them,) and where either of the two following conditions may exist: (a) A district remote from railway transportation. facilities, and where there is a deposit, or deposits, containing sufficient values to warrant their being worked, but which, due to the cost of getting coke in for operating a smelter and of getting ore out to a smelter, have to remain unworked.. And where, on the other hand, there is plenty of water power which call he developed at reasonable cost for the production of electric power, by the use of which for. smelting the ores in an electric furnace, with subsequent Bessermerization if necessary, a concentrated product may be obtained, which can easily stand the necessary transportation charges. (b) Or,. comparatively speaking, the transportation facilities may be all right, but the cost of fuel be too great to permit of the ordinary methods of smelting, whereas,- on the other hand, hydro-electric power can he developed: in the district at a, low cost,, and the ores could be smelted by the electric furnace at a cost. that would make their treatment possible. With these possibilities in mind we have attempted to make a brief comparative study of the problem for the purpose of aiding those interested in the subject, in determining whether it would be possible metallurgically, and feasible commercially; to use the electric furnace-in those localities where, by reason: of excessive fuel costs, the cost, of operating the furnaces for smelting copper-ores. is either excessive or prohibitive. Although the smelting of copper ores in the electric furnace has received considerable attention and more or less experimental work has been done, so far as: we lire: aware there ate no electric furnaces in the United States which are' being worked on copper ores. I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.
