This work was first undertaken in the metallurgical laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 by L. A. Dickinson, E. Phelps, and V. S. Rood, under the author's direction. They attempted to determine the diagram for the system Cu2S-MiS, but several inexplicable results were obtained. The following year, P. H. Mayer with Mr. Dickinson carried on some experiments with nickel sulphide and found that the molten material slowly lost sulphur until it reached a composition corresponding to the compound Ni3S2, established by Bornemann.l At this point the composition remained stable. The freezing points of the mixtures gradually fell off with the loss of sulphur. Since the above facts seemed to explain the erratic results obtained in the first experiments, Mr. Mayer with F. Jaeger attempted in 1910 to establish a correct equilibrium diagram for the Cu2S-Ni3S2 series. They prepared pure Cu2S and Ni3S2 and determined the cooling curves for various mixtures. The fusions were made in a platinum resistance furnace and the temperatures were measured with a platinum-iridium thermocouple connected with a Sullivan galvanometer. The curve was established for mixtures containing more than 40 per cent. Cu2S, but they were unable to determine certainly the direction of the curve beyond that point. Nothing further was attempted with this series until the present year, when the work was carried to a successful conclusion with the assistance of A. Butts, Jr., and E. H. Weil. The results of this work are given in the following pages. Preparation of Cu2S.—A piece of cathode' copper from the Buffalo plant of the Calumet & Hecla Co. was cut into shavings by a shaper and converted into sulphide by heating in boiling sulphur. A porcelain casserole was used for the purpose, the heat being furnished by a Bunsen burner. It was found that after boiling in the sulphur for an hour the copper shavings were completely converted into sulphide. ISOTHERMAL formation of martensite in a copper-aluminum-nickel alloy was previously reported by Hull and Garwood.' In the present work an attempt has been made to investigate some of the character- istics of the formation of isothermal martensite in binary copper-aluminum alloys containing 14.00 and 14.50 pct Al, respectively. Chill-cast alloys were prepared from OFHC copper and aluminum of greater than 99.5 pct purity. They were homogenized for 24 hr at 950° C. Polished samples were soaked at 1000°C and quenched in water to retain the p phase untransformed; martensite did not form during the quench. The surface was then repolished for isothermal microscopic studies at room temperature. The salient features of the martensitic transformation in copper-aluminum alloys observed in this investigation are: a) The transformation progresses (i) by nuclea-tion at new sites and (ii) by simultaneous slow isothermal growth of existing martensite plates. Slow isothermal growth of martensite has previously been observed by Holden2 in an uranium-chromium alloy and by Hull and Garwood in copper-aluminum-nickel alloy. b) Martensite plates nucleate preferentially at the pin holes formed during the casting of the specimen, Fig. 1. c) Some of the martensite plates pass right through other plates lying in their path, Fig. 1. d) Martensite plates cross grain boundaries without any change in the direction of growth. e) An irregular network of markings, Fig. 2, appears simultaneously with the formation of martensite. It was less prominent in the case of 14.5 pct alloy. The markings may arise due to spontaneous deformation under the lattice strains of the martensitic transformation. Crossing of martensite plates was first observed by Kulin and cohen3 when a high-nickel steel was cooled to 77°K. They suggested that the rapidly advancing plates atquire considerable kinetic energy and strike the obstructing plate with a momentum so as to nucleate the process on the other side of the plate. This, however, fails to explain the present observation where the slow isothermally growing martensite plates cross each other. Such plates would not possess large momentum to bodily displace the obstructing plate. Fig. 1 shows the martensite plates crossing each other without body displacements. This should be contrasted with Fig. 3 of Kulin and Cohen's paper where crossing of plates is accompanied by shearing or body displacements of the plates. The present observations can, how-

Drilling in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. TO explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927 our firm was engaged by two organizations1 for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data this far collected. As a result of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined: one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel;2 the other, near Hetten-schlag, was briefly discussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the stratigraphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes; and to indicate the new geological outlookwhich such a discovery suggests. Stratigraphy In the southern part of the Rhine graben the Oligocene rests almost directly on the Middle Jurassic and consists, in ascending order, of: 1. Green marls, not salt-bearing, composed of fresh and brackish water deposits. 2. Middle stage, salt-bearing, consisting of lower-schistose marls and upper, variegated marls. 3. Blue marls, not salt-bearing, but including gypsum deposits; hence sediments laid down in a bay more or less connected with the sea.

Because of this and because mining prospects must compete for the same dollar as many other needs of a diversified company, then the success or failure of any new proposal depends on how well its return on investment compares with all other capital requests. Mr. Kruger presents case histories showing what it costs to explore for new mines, how many of these prospects reward their promoters with success and how well some of the more famous mines have paid off.

Superficial observation of the petroleum stabilization movement in 1932 is disappointing. Threatened overproduction persisted; waste continued; proration was violated; gasoline taxes were evaded; and, as a consequence, chaos threatened the industry as the year drew to a close. However, comparison of the movement in 1932 with its beginning a few years ago, and analyses of those influences that promote its growth as well as those which retard it, disclose some reasons for encouragement. Stabilization, as we see it, is not merely a mechanical engineering problem. It involves social engineering. By which we do not mean it is possible, or even desirable, to change the nature of men, but rather that it is possible to set up procedure that will avoid causing them to clash. It comprehends consideration of physical objects that is clearly within the field of the engineer, but it considers them only in relation to their distribution, utilization and control in harmony with philosophies that motivate men and shape current conceptions of right and wrong, or of justice and injustice if those terms be deemed more acceptable. Stabilization cannot be effected without utilizing the knowledge of the engineer, but neither can it be effected without utilizing more than comes within his traditional field of activity. In discussing the problem herein we shall endeavor to treat it briefly from that consolidated viewpoint. Rapid fluctuations in supply have characterized the oil industry from its beginning; yet only within the past ten years has an understanding begun to develop regarding the extent of waste—the degree of dissipation of natural resources—that attends the operation of the industry under the practices and laws which control it in the United States. The extent and regrettable consequences of those wastes, their underlying causes and the ease with which they could be prevented are not yet generally understood even within the industry. This chapter presents, in summarized form, standard procedures for making separations of minerals from their ores by the froth flotation process to produce marketable concentrates. These are typical mineral separations which are being made commercially with the reagents and conditions generally used in the mining industry. Typical separations are presented for 17 metallic and 11 nonmetallic ores. The review of each includes a brief description of the mineral and the particular problem presented, general market specifications for its concentrates, an outline of treatment method, and kinds and quantities of reagents usually employed. This chapter does not include de- tails about ore preparation (crushing, grinding, and classification), elements of ore and pulp transportation (conveying and pumping), or concentrate preparation for market (thickening, filtering, and drying). In each presentation it is assumed, if not detailed further, that the ore is ground to the economical point of liberation of the minerals to be separated. Specific information, such as ratio of concentration and recovery, that depends upon the grade of ore being treated is considered beyond the scope of this chapter. Effective flotation separations that produce marketable concentrates may produce widely varying results in terms of percent recovery and still be economically profitable operations. Details of plant practice on specific ores are presented in Chapters 16 and 17. In this chapter the chemical names of the reagents are given. The extent to which different reagents are used in flotation plants in the U. S. is presented in Chapter 4. A compilation of the various flotation reagents, their trade names, manufacturers, and use has been prepared by H. T. Spedden. ANTIMONY The principal ore mineral of antimony, stibnite (Sb2 S3), is generally found in the U. S. in ore bodies in association with other valuable minerals such as galena (Pbs), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), or tetrahedrite (3Cu2 S – Sb2 S3), The sulfo-salt minerals of antimony, such as tetrahedrite or pyrargyrite, are often associated with high silver values, so that the presence of antimony may indicate economic importance even though the actual antimony content is low. The deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl onto amorphous substrates has been studied, with attention being paid to the specific effects of the physical and chemical nature of the substrate and to the effect of oxygen on the crystal morphology. With substrates having microscratches or etch lines, nu-cleation was observed to occur preferentially at these surface features. Flame polishing of the substrate surfaces was found to remove any regularity in preferred nucleation sites. Nucleation was observed to occur less readily on substrates having relatively low surface energies, e.g., Teflon and carbon, than on materials having relatively high surface energies such as fused silica. At low oxygen concentrations [Ni(CO)4/O2 > 54 x 1031, apparently pure and well-formed nickel crystals were observed to nucleate and grow irrespective of the presence of oxygen. At higher concentrations of oxygen, a secondary growth process, dependent upon oxygen concentration and resulting in a gradual change in crystal morphology, was observed. It is concluded that the influence of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel is determined by the relative kinetics of the various possible reactions, and that under the experimental conditions employed the 0-Ni interaction occurs at some nucleation or prenuclea-tion stage. THE purpose of the research on crystal nucleation in chemical vapor deposition as described in this paper has been twofold: 1) to examine some effects arising from the use of amorphous substrates, and 2) to study the specific effects of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel in a nickel carbonyl-carbon monoxide system. The nickel-nickel carbonyl system was chosen for study for several reasons: 1) nickel films are of potential interest in electronic technology, and 2) the deposition can be carried out at moderate temperatures, thus making possible detailed study of the processes occurring and the use of a variety of substrate materials (including some which melt at relatively low temperatures). Fairly well-characterized chemical kinetics and a broad background of information are available on the py-rolysis reactions and on the mechanisms of Ni-O interactions. NUCLEATION AND GROWTH THEORY The theoretical background for the analysis of nucleation and growth by vapor deposition for a one-component system (physical vapor deposition) and the problems encountered therein have been reviewed by Hirth and pound.' More recently Mande12 has indicated the difficulties of applying such theory to chemical systems. One of the major problems involved is the possible multiplicity of chemical reactions and deposition routes. For example, those reactions which are probably of significance in a discussion of the pyrolytic deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl under the conditions of the present experimental work are illustrated in Fig. 1. As is true with most cases of chemical deposition, many of the quantitative data necessary for a complete analysis of the system are either not available or not directly measurable. However, with the present system, sufficient data are available for a discussion of nucleation and growth on a qualitative basis. THIS announcement of the topics relating to production control, which the Committee hopes to have discussed at the February meeting, supplements the preliminary announcement published in the November number of MINING AND METALLURGY. In the previous article, the writer indicated the kaleide-scopic nature of the questions involved in obtaining better coordination in industry, and that, as a matter of practical expediency, the discussion in February would be limited to the more obvious difficulties in industry which need attention and to those questions which the Committee thinks would be of greatest interest to members of the Institute. But while practical considerations necessitate limiting the program, free discussion of all phases of the subject is urged by 'the Committee. In a preliminary consideration of the production control problem, there loom up two questions which have to be faced: (1) First, there is the question of the extra industrial capacity necessary to meet demand during the ordinary fluctuations of business, commonly characterized as `the "business cycle." Anyone who tries to formulate a program pertaining to productive capacity must decide whether he wishes to discuss the control of business cycles. While this question may eventually lend itself to treatment, the Committee does not feel that it can be considered at present with much profit. (2) The second question arises from the existence of over-stimulated capacity above and beyond peak demands in boom times. Discussion of this topic, it is felt, would be most fruitful. How to prevent capacity from being over-stimulated to an extent beyond any hope of possible demand is a

INTRODUCTION Mill production from the Homestake Mine in 1979 amounted to 1.29 Mt (1.43 million st) of ore containing 5.9 g/t of gold (0.172 oz per st) compared with 1978 production of 1.44 Mt (1.59 million st) containing 6.2 g/t of gold (0.180 oz per st). The average cost per ounce of gold produced in 1979 rose to approximately $250 contrasted with $176 in 1978. This increase in unit cost is the result of inflation, a diminishing ore grade, and productivity losses related to a shortage of experienced miners as well as compliance with federal regulatory requirements. Together, these factors prompted the investigation of several large-scale, highly mechanized underground mining methods. This analysis indicated Vertical Crater Retreat mining to be one of the safest underground methods known today, yet competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Therefore, the feasibility of applying the VCR stoping method at the Homestake Mine was explored. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping is a recent innovation in large- scale underground mining based on C. W. Livingston's crater blasting theories. Figure 1 illustrates the method which consists of drilling 165.1-mm-diameter (6.5-in.) holes from a topsill down-dip to an under- cut on the level below. The bottom of each hole is then loaded from above with a predetermined charge weight and horizontal slices up to 4.27 m (14 ft) in thickness are blasted into the undercut. Broken ore is extracted from drawpoints located on or below the undercut level.

INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes. No shear strength is attributed to the interface so that the resultant force, P, from the upper wedge acts normally across the interface. The normal loads

IN VIEW of the enormous wastes of natural resources, of labor and of capital, due primarily to the economic environment, established by legislation, the general neglect of this phase of the problem of the elimination of waste is difficult to understand. In such a study, the engineering method of attacking a problem should be employed. The engineer does not try to solve his problem by disregarding natural laws, but by utilizing them. The successful engineer establishes an environ-ment in which forces, acting in harmony with natural laws upon an object or objects, will produce the desired results. The engineer who notices that the water level in a vessel, into which a gallon of water per minute is flowing, is two feet higher than the level in an adjacent vessel, connected therewith by a 6-in. pipe, does not assume that the law of gravity has ceased to work, or that water no longer seeks its level; he examines the connecting pipe for obstacles which prevent the free flow of water. Some editors, many reformers and most politicians tell us that the law of supply and demand no longer works; hence governmental control of commerce is necessary. Governmental control may temporarily-that is, until trial proves its futility- "insure domestic tranquility" and "promote the general welfare;" but it cannot "secure the blessings of liberty" which it cur-tails, nor can it "establish justice" which it violates.

MUCH has been learned about plastic deformation behavior in crystals through the use of dislocation and slip band etchants. Slip in nickel and nickel-base alloys has previously been revealed by various etching techniques.l-5 The techniques for nickel-base super-alloys4,5 were successful only in the Udimet 700 composition in specific heat-treated conditions. The objective of this work was to develop a more generally applicable slip-band etching procedure. The nominal compositions of the alloys used in this study are listed in Table I. The low carbon Mar-M2OO alloy referred to in the text is the same as listed in Table I with the exception that the carbon content is less than 100 ppm. Mar-M200 and Udimet 700 were solutionized at 2250" and 2150°F, respectively. The aging treatment for both cast alloys was 32 hr at 1600°F and for wrought Udimet 700 was 4 hr at 1975"F, 24 hr at 1550°F, and 16 hr at 1400°F. The new slip-band etching technique consists of a chemical etch followed by a short electropolish, Table 11. Fig. l(a) shows the best result obtained on an internal section of a plastically deformed single crystal of Mar-M2OO when using a conventional slip-band etching procedure which consists of electropolishing followed by etching. Ghostlike traces corresponding to planar slip bands are observed, but the contrast between the bands and the background is weak. Fig. l(b) shows the same field using the new slip-band etching technique. After the etching step of this technique, the same ghostlike traces of Fig. l(a) are observed, but the subsequent electropolishing accentuates the slip bands and the subgrain boundaries while the rest of the matrix is being polished. Longer electropolishing obliterates the slip bands. The new slip-band etching technique makes use of the etchants and electrolytes that are normally used for a given material. Because of this, it should be possible to slip-band etch other nickel-base superal-loys by using existing etchants and electrolytes for a material and following the procedures outlined in the "Comments" section of Table 11. In conducting a pressure build-up test on an oil well, it is often necessary to shut-in the well for a short time prior to initiation of the test. The effect of such a short tern shut-in on the resulting pressure build-up curve is derived. The derivation is based on the Kelvin point-source solution and is a straight forward extension of the fundarnental theory. The magnitude of the effect is evaluatecl and illustrated by an example. It is shown that if the production subsequent to the short term shut-in is at least 10 times the duration of the shrct-in, the effect will he less than 10 per cent. INTRODUCTION It often happens that before a pressure build-up test can be made an additional valve must be mounted on the wellhead, or on arrival at the well, it might be learned that the well had been shut-in several hours the previous day because of a shortage of tankage. In such cases the question is How will such an interruption of production affect the results of a pressure buildup test This work explains how to take account of such a short term shut-in in order that the test can proceed without further delay. The solution presented here makes use of the Kelvin point-source solution used by Horne1 in his treatment of the pressure build-up in wells. Use is also made of the super-position theorem. MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION The well is assumed to have been in production at a constant rate for a relatively long time (several days or more). It is then shut-in for a short time, after which it is again placed in production at the previous constant rate. It continues to produce at this rate until shut-in for a pressure build-up test. The Kelvin point-source solution is expressed by Eq. 1. The sequence of production rates is listed in Table I.
