The Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barccnite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. Introduction The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarel1o,2 Mactear3 and Merri114 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Bar-cena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. Location The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of (Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). Can wet-ground mica be produced from mica schist ores, and if so, would its properties be comparable with products now on the market? This was the problem which prompted the development of a flowsheet for the beneficiation of mica schist. The fine-ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as sources of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and bulk-density specifications. Mica obtained from mica schist is iron-stained and decrepitated and requires additional beneficiation to produce a wet-ground mica product. Despite these adversities, there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores is considerably higher than that of the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of 40% mica. This higher-grade mica feed should promote a lower mining and milling cost. The mica schist ores with their higher mica content would mean less tailings to handle; however, there would have to be a means for disposing of acid and sulfate wastes. A flowsheet was developed whereby mica could be recovered from mica schist ores and beneficiated in a way that would result in a high-quality end product.' The essential phase of the process involves using reducing reagents to increase the magnetic susceptibility of iron contaminants which then can be removed with a magnetic separator. General Treatment Procedure The mica is floated by either of two methods, an amine float in an acid circuit' or the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) amine-fatty acid float in an alkaline circuit' The flotation mica is ground in a pebble mill to liberate contaminated particles and expose iron-stained surfaces. The concentrate is then conditioned with a reducing reagent and passed through a Frantz Ferrofilter for the removal of magnetic material. The nonmagnetic product is acid-leached to further reduce the iron contamination. The leached material is then ground to product size and checked for specifications. Discussion of Flowsheet and Its Development Flotation: The mica is concentrated by flotation using either of two methods: an amine float in an acid circuit, or the USBM amine-fatty acid float in an alkaline circuit.' The writer does not wish to elaborate on the relative merits of the two flotation procedures; however, after investigating ores from various localities, it was felt that the amine float in an acid circuit was more consistent when using a standard procedure. Iron Reduction and Magnetic Separation: This phase of the flowsheet may be considered the key to the process. It was developed when it became apparent that hot acid leaching had just about reached its maximum effective¬ness for color improvement. S. C. Sun and William Hirsh in "Hydrochloric Acid Leaching of Iron From Pennsylvania Aluminous Clays,"` reported iron extraction for -20-mesh minerals of 82.20% for hematite and only 33.46% for magnetite. The test procedure employs a 19% hydrochloric acid solution, 104°C temperature, and 10% solids. It was felt that magnetic removal of some of the iron contaminants before leaching therefore would be advantageous. Since the iron minerals present as contaminants vary in magnetic susceptibility, it was decided to experiment with reducing reagents as a means of influencing their magnetic properties. Zinc hydrosulfite or sodium hydrosulfite were the reagents used throughout the tests. The procedure developed consists of conditioning the mica concentrate in a closed container at approximately 5% solids with a reducing reagent. Approximately 10.0 lb of zinc hydrosulfite per ton of mica concentrate is used. The ferric iron is reduced to the ferrous state (magnetic) and oxidation is retarded by isolation from the atmosphere in a closed container. ALTHOUGH by far the largest A consumer of platinum metals in the world, the United States until recently has been in- significant as a producer. Writing in the "Minerals Yearbook" for 1939, H. W. Davis states that 1938 probably marked the beginning of an- other period of transition in the world production of the platinum metals. In that year, he says, their production in the United States jumped to 49,380 oz., or fourth in the rank of world output. In the ten-year period 1925 to 1934 United States output ,averaged only 8300 oz. Practically all of this sudden in- crease in production is attributable to the introduction of mechanized equipment at the placer deposits in the Goodnews Bay district of Alaska. This district adjoins the Bering Sea and Kuskokwim Bay (accented on the first syllable), and is approximately 120 miles south of the mouth of the Kuskokwim River. The nearest village and post office is Platinum, which lies about eleven miles north- east of the Goodnews Bay Mining Company's camp. A good gravel road connects the mine camp and the village.

IN accordance with the custom of recent years, the Institute joined with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress in holding a joint meeting at Joplin on Sept. 28, 29 and 30. Actually the meeting might be said to have begun on the 27th, since the Engineering Education Committee held two sessions on that day, which are reported on another page. In addition to these sessions there were informal gatherings in the Hotel Conner, which was the headquarters, on the golf links and elsewhere of all those who had arrived by Sunday morning. The technical sessions were formally opened on Monday morning by Robert E. Tally who, after suitable preliminary remarks, introduced A. Scott Thompson, of Miami, Okla. Mr. Thompson in welcoming the visitors to the Tri-State district said that it had come to be known as a poor man's country and at the present price of zinc did not find it difficult to live up to its name. He also referred to the work Mr. Tally had done for the stabilization of the mineral industry. H. Foster Bain, in responding to this address for the Institute, said that mining men generally felt at home in Joplin, that the solutions of their problems and the general practice that had been developed in the district were not only of great interest to them, but that visitors could learn much

Experimental data is given for several natural minerals on the load required for the fracture of single specimens over a very wide size range. The experimental results are compared with published data, such as for coal specimens from 30 to 64 in. in size. Correlations of the specific energy (per unit mass) required for fracture with specimen size are given as functions of specimen shape and the experimentally observed load-size relationships. These correlations are discussed with reference to comminution theory. Comminution, through compression or impact, can result only if sufficient force, or energy, is applied to a specimen of a given size. The relation of specimen size to force requirements has not been adequately considered previously. For single particle fracture, it was previously shown 1 that the specific energy (energy, e, per unit mass, M) at fracture of single glass spheres was inversely proportional to the product size modulus, k, as indicated in the equation: e/M = C/k [1] This was found true not only for numerous glass specimens of the same nominal size but was true for all nominal sizes tested from 1/8 to 1 in. Also, it was observed that the smaller spheres required a greater specific energy at fracture than the larger spheres and consequently had a smaller product size modulus. However, the relationship giving the required fracture energy as a function of specimen size was not further elaborated upon. This paper will extend the development of the feed size effect on specific fracture energy for brittle materials. SPECIFIC ENERGY-FEED SlZE RELATIONSHIPS FROM PREVIOUS DATA For the particular glass spheres tested in the previously described experiments,' it can be shown, as on Fig. 1, that the specific energy varied inversely as the 4/3 power approximately of the feed size, F, in the span of nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1 in. The load at which a 3-in. diam glass sphere (a crystal gazer's ball) was broken was within the range predicted by an extrapolation of this energy-feed size relationship. MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

THE Charleston Section of the A. I. M. E. held a joint meeting with the National Coal Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on May 6 and 7, at which 94 members and guests were registered. Mechanical operation of coal mines was the subject discussed. First on the program was a paper entitled "Rock Dusting in the Coal Mines of West Virginia," by R. M. Lambie, chief of the Department of Mines, and Gordon MacVean. It appears in full in the current issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, p. 290. J. E. Jones of the Old Ben Coal Corp. opened this discussion by describing the method of rock dusting employed in the mines of that company, giving many interesting details, incidentally referring to the use of rock dust in fighting mine fires. He described one case where a number of troughs was brought to within 150 ft. of the fire, and rock dust had been thrown in its direction. After each trough had been thrown the party advanced a few feet, where another trough was discharged. About 10 ft. were gained on each advance, until the party found they had advanced completely over the fire.

The structure, composition, and morphology of the carbide phases present in the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, hare been determined and three carbide phases observed. The MC carbide is a solidification product, and the M23 Co and M6C carbides are both prod~icts of solid-state precipitation. The identity of each phase usas determined by both X-ray and electron-diffraction techn~ques. Compositions of all three carbides were studied using the electron beam micro-probe analyzer and by unalyszs of electrolytically extracted residues. Optical and electron microscopy were employed in order that the time/temperature -dependent behavior of the carbides might be observed. Supplementary studies were completed on thin foils and oriented single crystals to determine the mor-phology and orientation relationship of each phase with that of the matrix. MAR-M~OO* is a high-temperature, creep-resistant superalloy designed for use in the as-cast condition. The "as-cast" microstructure consists of a solid-solution matrix, referred to as gamma (y), which contains a general, coherent precipitate of the inter-metallic Ni3(A1,Ti) referred to as gamma prime (?). As a result of dendritic segregation during solidification, a degenerate, spherulitic ? -?' eutectic constituent is present at the grain boundaries and the in-terdendritic regions, which is nucleated by the y on the dendrite tips. A primary carbide phase, a solidification product, is also present at the grain boundaries and in the interdendritic areas, and an additional carbide appears at the grain boundaries as a fine discontinuous precipitate. The alloy is particularly susceptible to heat treatment. For example, the mechanical properties of the columnar grained mater- ial are substantially improved by solution heat treatment, followed by an intermediate temperature age. Metallographic examination of heat-treated material reveals, however, that exposure to elevated temperatures has a marked effect on the microstructure of the alloy; in particular, it is observed that precipitation of considerable amounts of various carbide phases occur. The following investigation was carried out to determine the morphology, composition, and behavior of the carbides in Mar-Ma00 as an aid to the determination of their effect on the mechanical properties and stability of the alloy. THE PRIMARY MC CARBIDE The MC carbide phase appears in the interdendritic interstices and the grain boundaries. In directionally solidified Mar-M200 the carbide appears as very small particles in the chilled region, Fig. l(a), whereas in material less affected by the chill, it becomes larger and develops a dendritic morphology, Fig. 1(b). Step polishing of metallographic specimens from this region shows that in directionally solidified material the individual carbide dendrites are connected in a dendritic network within the metallic interdendritic interstices, whereas in material from the chilled region and in conventional Mar-M200 they are discontinuous, isolated dendrites. No orientation relationship exists between the primary carbide and the matrix.

Preliminary separation of precious metals by flotation can offer a simplification of the conventional method of treatment of anode slimes. Laboratory flotation experiments show that rich gold and silver concentrate can be obtained with excellent recoveries. THE purpose of this paper is to present the results of an investigation into the possibilities of separating precious metals from anode slimes by selective flotation. The work was carried out at the State Research Institute in Helsinki, Finland. The sample of anode slimes tested was submitted by the Outo-kumpu Co. in Finland. In 1947 the average assay of filtered and dried anode slimes in the Outokumpu refinery in Pori was as follows: Au, 0.50 pct; Ag, 9.38 pct; Cu, 11.02 pct; Ni, 45.21 pct; Pb, 2.62 pct; Fe, 0.60 pct; Sn, 1.00 pct; Sb, 0.04 pct; As, 0.70 pct; Se, 4.33 pct; S, 2.32 pct; SO,, 2.17 pct; SiO2, 2.25 pct. The daily assay naturally varies considerably from the figures presented above. The present conventional method of treatment of anode slimes consists of the steps shown in the flowsheet in fig. 1. As seen from this simplified flowsheet, the present method of treatment involves many steps by which the components of the anode slimes are removed one after another until the main products, gold and silver, may be separated. "Power is transmitted to Butte, a distance of 130 miles, over two separate lines running parallel on the same right of way.The transmission line embodies the most approved ideas in construction. The conductors are No. O. B. & S. gauge, hard drawn copper strand. The insulators are of the suspension type, each insulator consisting of six units, 10 inches in diameter. The insulators will stand a wet test of over 300,000 volts, and were selected after long and careful tests by the company's engineers. The wires are carried on steel towers of four-legged, single crossarm type, manufactured by Milliken Bros. The three conductors are suspended in a horizontal row from the crossarm, and there are no transpositions in either line. Above the power wires and symmetrically located are two galvanized steel strands, Vs-inch in diameter, grounded at each tower, which serve as a protection against lightning.The distance between towers in level country is 600 feet. In mountainous country, however, the spans are irregular in length and spans of 1,500 or 2,000 feet are common. The longest one in the line is that crossing- the Missouri River and is equal to 3,034 feet. The length of this span is such that a person standing at one end of it can sec the wires go off and vanish into space, while the tower at the other end is barely visible to the naked eye on a clear day. IT is well known that under appropriate conditions of chill casting, many metals and alloys develop a columnar grain structure having a high degree of preferred orientation.' In cubic materials, this principle has been employed to produce shaped castings with a unidirectional cube oriented columnar grain structure as well as shaped single crystals with a cube axis parallel to the growth ais.' "he purpose of this note is to describe how this same principle can be enlployed to produce wires, rods, or more complex crystal Shapes with a variety of conlpositions in cube or random orientations by a single casting operation. The procedure for directional solidification of in Fig. 2. Examination under crossed polarizers indicated that the striations were a second phase (presumably the B19 phase) which frequently forms initially at primary grain boundaries and then grows toward the interior as thin ribbons. X-ray studies on filings of this alloy reannealed at 1300°C for 15 min indicated a strong pattern of the fcc phase together with a substantial pattern of the B19 phase. The un-annealed filings, however, showed only the pattern of a cold-worked, fcc structure. In these two-phase alloys it appears, therefore, that the B19 phase is transformed into a disordered fcc structure by cold-working. The mechanical properties of these alloys would be of some interest since a fcc structure might be expected to possess greater ductility than the or-thorhombic B19 structure from which it forms. This research was partially supported by Research Grant DE-02455 from the National Institute of Dental Research. columnar grained ingots involves pouring a melt into a preheated mold having a water-cooled copper chill at its base? and controlling the temperature gradient in the mold so as to maintain columnar grain growth from end to end of the ingot.4 This is illustrated schematically in Fig. l(a). It should be noted that the longitudinal temperature gradient promoting unidirectional columnar grain growth is maintained by heat loss primarily through the solidifying ingot to the chill, so that both the temperature gradient and the growth rate diminish with increasing distance from the chill. As the distance from the chill increases? the columnar structure coarsens, and the perfection in preferred orientation tends to increase progressively. Using this same procedure of gradient solidification, Fig. l(b) shows a simple scheme for producing a batch of crystals having the same cube orientation rather than an assemblage of columnar grains. Wires and rods are produced by cementing ceramic tubes to the wall of the mold. The steep temperature gradient produced in the central chamber is controlled by the mold heater to produce favorable conditions for crystal growth. Clearly the success of the operation lies in the selection of individual growing columnar grains by some kind of orifice at the base of each channel in the mold. Using simple constrictions, experience with nickel-base alloys has shown that 4 -in.-diam holes at a distance of -1 in. from the chill yield crystals within 7 deg of (100); closer control of orientation is possible by placing the crystal selector farther away from the chill.

Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65NR and LIX63R are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoximetenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper, etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The results have demonstrated that the hydroxyoximes studied have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the salicylaldoxime-tenorite system. The effect of structural aspects such as isomerism and substitution in the molecule on the collector property of the oximes is also discussed. Substitution on oximic carbon by alkyl groups is found to promote collector activity. Only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.

A study was made of the development of texture and the anisotropy in plastic flow of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Based on Pole figure determinations, the shifting of texture induced by rolling at approximately 400°C was found to be due primarily to slip rotation for the major Portion of the material. Grain boundary shear is believed to be an important factor. The anisotropy of the textured alloy was examined in terms of the variations of yield stress under tension and the ratio of bi -axial strain increments µp, in the temperature range 25" to 290°C. The results were related to Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy. The Schmid factors of (1100)[1120], (1101)[1120/, and (1101)[1120] slip systems were analyzed and found to be compatible with the observed anisotropy. Cross-slip between these planes was proposed as a possible deformation mode. In a number of published articles, considerable interest has been directed to the possible achievement of texture hardening in hcp metals. Following Backofen, Hosford, and Burke,&apos; this phenomenon was related to the yield criteria of the material and was expressed in terms of the biaxial strain ratio, r = d?w/d?l. The higher the value of r, the greater is the expected potential for texture hardening under certain loading conditions. For a given material, r varies with direction. Such variation can be traced to the anisotropy in plastic flow and can be explained within the framework of the various modes of deformation. Hatch2 found that a high r value coincides with a texture whereby the (0001) pole is closely aligned with the surface normal for sheet materials, Based on the analysis of the slip on the {1010}, {1011}, and (0001) planes, Lee and Backofen3 and Avery, Hosford, and Backofen4 concluded that the resistance to thinning is reduced by the operation of the (0001) <1120> slip system; with this reasoning they were able to explain the low r values (i.e., r « 1) observed in magnesium alloy sheets in the rolling direction and in commercially pure titanium in the transverse direction. The general equation, dealing with plastic flow in a polycrystalline aggregate has been used to correlate the plastic anisotropy and texture. In this expression, T and s are shear and normal stresses, and dri and d? are shear and normal strain increments, respectively. Assuming that five slip systems are operative within each grain and applying the principle of maximum work,5,6 one can determine the m value among the available systems. On this basis, Hosford7 and Chin, Nesbitt, and Williams&apos; were able to correlate m with yield stress under plane-strain compression, and Svensson9 was able to predict the variation of yield stress in textured aluminum. These workers made their analyses from materials in which slip operation is known to be associated with plastic flow. Questions remain regarding the derivation of Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy,10,11 since it was formulated on von Mises&apos; yield criterion.&apos;&apos; Its ability to deal with other forms of deformation has been in doubt.13 Others have discussed the validity of Hill&apos;s quadratic equation relating strain and yield stress.14&apos;15 For hcp titanium, deformation by various modes of slip and twinning operations has been reported.16-20 If all possible modes of deformation operate and contribute substantially to the plastic flow, it is difficult to imagine how the quadratic expression can suitably describe the anisotropic plastic flow of titanium alloys. Backofen and Hosford15 considered that Hill&apos;s is a macroscopic theory and implied that the major mode of deformation by slip mechanism will adequately describe anisotropy of the material. In the present investigation, slip operation will be shown to play the major role in the development of sheet texture induced by rolling of a commercial titanium alloy. Although twinning and other modes of deformation may also operate, their operation is believed to be secondary. The anisotropic properties of the sheet, which can be expressed in terms of directional variation of r, µp = -d?w/d?l and the yield stress will be shown to be governed primarily by slip operation. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The titanium alloy chosen for the present investigation had a nominal composition of 8 wt pct Al, 1 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct V, and 0.1 wt pct interstitial impurities. Sheets varying between 0.1 and 0.15 in. thickness were used. The alloy was received in a condition which was prepared by rolling at 900°C and annealing at 700°C. Subsequently, the sheets were subjected to further reduction in thickness by rolling at 400°C. A total reduction in thickness of 65 to 70 pct was obtained by a series of quick passes in a rolling mill with intermediate reheating. Further reduction in thickness was not possible due to cracking developed at the edges of the sheets. X-ray measurements were conducted in a Siemens and a Norelco unit to determine the texture of the sheets. Reflection techniques were used exclusively with CuK, radiation and a nickel filter. The loss of X-ray intensity due to geometric defocusing was calibrated with a technique described previously." The (0001), (1010), and (1071) pole figures were plotted from 0 to 80 deg, and to present the texture elements quantitatively, inverse pole figures were constructed following the technique described by Jetter, McHargue, and Williams.22 Tensile experiments were carried out at 25", 175",

Solubilities and densities are reported for alumina hydrates in NaOH solutions under the conditions of the Bayer process employed to purify alumina for aluminum production. The equilibrium constants for reactions to form A102- accurately correlate the effects of NaOH concentration on the solubilities; the temperature coefficients of the equilibria lead to heats of solution of 7.34, 4.76, and 5.24 kcal for the a trihydrate, a monohydrate, and ß trihydrate, respectively. Moderate calcination does not change the solubility of the a trihydrate but increases that of the a monohydrate. At solution temperatures above 100°C, the trihydrates transform rapidly to a monohydrate. Hydro-thermally produced a monohydrate is the stable phase above 20°C. CORNERSTONE of the aluminum industry, the Bayer process for alumina production is based on the difference in solubility of hydrated alumina in NaOH solutions between 170" and 40°C. Solubilities and densities in this system were determined thirty years ago by M. Tosterudl under the direction of J. D. Edwards and C. S. Taylor. The solubility data, which still appear more concordant than those in the literature, are employed to sort out the complex equilibria in this system. The nomenclature for the alumina hydrates is that presented in The Aluminum Industry&apos; and more recently summarized in Alumina Properties.3 a trihydrate is the purified phase analogous to gibbsite, a monohydrate is similarly akin to boehmite, and ß trihydrate is sometimes known as bayerite. Literature Goudriaan4 reviewed the early literature on alumina in NaOH solutions and presented data on the solubility at 30°C of several forms. The gel precipitated from aluminum sulphate or chloride with ammonia and dried at 130" to 140°C had the highest solubility but was unstable, its solubility being cut to one-tenth on standing in NaOH. The solubility of the gel was decreased one-third on calcination at 300" to 400°C, while that of the gel transformed in NaOH at room temperature to a crystalline trihydrate was unchanged on calcination. The preparation produced by slow hydrolysis of sodium aluminate solution with CO, in the air gave solubilities in rough agreement with later values for a trihydrate. The solubility of this form was increased slightly by the calcination. Fricke and Jucaitis5 extended the work to 30" and 60°C with a trihydrate. They also gave solubilities for ß trihydrate (bayerite b), although the residue belonging to the left branch of the solubility curve corresponded to a trihydrate. The residues at high NaOH concentrations were mono and trisodium aluminates, the latter being 3Na2O . AL2O3 • 6H2O. Solubilities of a trihydrate at 95°C and of a monohydrate at 150" and 200 °C come from the work of Magarchak.6 a trihydrate transformed to a monohydrate above 95°C. A few measurements on the solubility at 25°C of an alumina trihydrate prepared by slow hydrolysis of NaAIO, solutions were presented by Sprauer and pearce.? Their analyses showed the monosodium aluminate to have the composition Na2O.Al2O3-2.5H2O.
