Introduction. THE New London copper mine, about 81, miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the Writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described y Graton1 and Laney2, except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly-the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral.

ABOUT 55 attended the general session of the Nonferrous Metallurgy Committee on Wednesday afternoon. In opening the proceedings the Chairman, Frank G. Breyer, served notice of his intention to make an early start this year in securing papers for his committee. He voiced the thought that more importance should be attached to the prompt publication of data on new advances in practice; the record of technical progress should be written before the sharpness of the current image becomes blurred by the veil of time. As an illustration, Mr. Breyer declared that great strides have been made in the zinc industry during the past nine years, whereby zinc ore is converted directly to the oxide in large mechanical furnaces, yet the literature is confined to patents.

Vanadium foils and wires, either cold-worked or recrystallized, show a ductile-brittle-ductile fracture sequence with temperature. At about 150°C the hydrogenated vanadium wires are found to be ductile. At room temperature the wires show brittle fracture, and at liquid nitrogen temperature the wires are again ductile, although to a lesser extent than found at 150°C. Hydrogenated cold-rolled vanadium foils have been found to fracture in unusually straight lines along the [100] texture directions. The hydrogen content required to show this [loo] texture fracture is limited to a few atomic percent in range. Hydrogen content above this range causes fracture to occur in random directions. PRELIMINARY experiments with hydrogenated vanadium foils indicated that the embrittling effect of the hydrogen on the vanadium, which was severe at room temperature, was reduced at both lower and higher temperatures. In order to investigate more quantitatively the ductility changes with temperature, vanadium wires were tested in tension at three temperatures. The reduction of area was measured and the fractures examined. Specimen Preparation—The material used was kindly supplied by A. U. Seyboltl in the form of M-in. rod. The nominal analysis was: 99.2 pct V assay, 0.2 pct C, 0.01 pct Si, 0.01 pct Fe, 0.015 pct Ca, 0.02 pct O,, 0.01 pct N2, and 0.003 pct H,. The specimens were 0.035-in. diam wires. These were prepared by cold-swaging the supplied rod to the final diameter without intermediate anneal. They were finished with long-bearing dies. The surface was then given a light polishing with 0 emery paper and degreased in trichlorethylene. An X-ray check indicated that the cold-swaged wire had a fairly strong [110] fiber texture. The wires were then recrystallized in vacuum in continuously pumped quartz tubes at two temperatures to give two different grain sizes. One group of wires was given 45 min at 800°C; another, 60 min at 1000°C. The microstructures in Fig. 1 show the wires after they have been electropolished and elec-troetched in 10 pct HCI. After the 800°C anneal, the vanadium grains had a diameter of 1 to 2p and there appeared to be a tendency to elongation in the longitudinal direction. However, the latter may be an etching effect. After the 1000°C anneal, the grains appeared to be equi-axed, but there was a very large spread in grain size, probably due to some impurity segregation in the wire, Fig. 1, right. The grain diameters varied between the limits of 1 to 150p. The small particles shown particularly clearly in Fig. 1, left, are also visible on the polished surface of all samples before etching and are undoubtedly carbides and nitrides of vanadium. An X-ray check indicated these annealed wires had a strong [110} recrystallization fiber texture. The hydrogenation was carried out in an iron retort with dry hydrogen flowing through it, the retort and contents being heated in a tube furnace with a hydrogen atmosphere. The hydrogenation temperature was approximately 500°C. The hydro-genation times chosen were approximately those which would be just enough to cause the vanadium to be brittle at room temperature and thus allow the greatest chance for ductility to occur at the other two temperatures. Part of the fine grained specimens were hydrogenated for 21/2 min at 490°C. Part of the coarse grained specimens were hydro-genated for 11/2 min at 515°C.

ANY thought of Morenci naturally includes its sister town of Clifton, its gateway to the outside world. Clifton, the country seat of Greenlee County, is the terminus of a branch line of the Southern Pacific railroad from Lordsburg, N.M. Carload freight incident to the Morenci operation moves from Clifton over Phelps Dodge?s standard-gauge industrial railroad. Private freight must be hauled by truck. These two communities fell far short of supplying adequate housing for the personnel concerned with the new operations so a new townsite, Stargo, was developed adjacent to Morenci. Here 234 housing units with garages have been built and twenty similar units have been erected near the reduction works.

A new synthetic material has been developed which is highly effective in treating drilling muds to reduce filtration rate. The material is the soluble salt of a very high molecular weight condensation product of sulfonated phenol and formaldehyde (SPIF). Laboratory tests show that SPIF is effective in muds of all salinities varying from fresh water to saturated salt water. Alkaline materials. such as soda ash or caustic and quebracho, may be used in combination with SPIF to advantage, and are essential in muds containing saturated salt water. In a field test where the water used in the mud had a salinity of about one-half that of sea water, SPIF in combination with caustic and quebracho made a very satisfactory mud. SPIF does not ferment. but due probably to additional polymerization a slight decrease in effectiveness is found when it is subjected to high PH and high temperature for a long time. INTRODUCTION Drilling mud is essential in rotary drilling. The influence of variations in the different properties of a mud on its ability to perform the various functions in drilling of wells is thoroughly understood in some cases and poorly understood in others. For instance, the function of mud density in restraining high pressure fluids is simple and well known. On the other hand. while the value of low filtration is widely recognized, it is seldom possible to determine precisely what filtration rate is required for the mud to perform its functions properly. Filtration rate is important because it influences the ease of moving tools in or out of the hole. Filtration rate also affects the stability of the bore hole walls, which are subject to softening and degradation by aqueous filtrate. Difficulties in rotary drilling are often avoided by using low-filtration muds. Treatment of fresh-water muds to provide moderately low filtration rates usually consists of adding chemicals to improve the dispersion of the clays. To provide very low filtration rates, organic colloidal materials are added. Among the materials hat are used in this way are starch, natural gums, and altered celluloses. In muds that contain large amounts of salt or calcium or magnesium ions, the clays are coagulated and, as a consequence, the filtration rate is undesirably high. In such muds organic colloids are of great importance. LIMITATIONS OF PRESENT FILTRATION ADDITIVES Starch and water-soluble gums are widely used as filtration control agents. Starch is the most important material of this kind being used. It has the advantage of relatively low cost. It is effective in promoting low filtration rates, not only in fresh water muds, but also in muds containing large amounts of salts. However, both starch and natural gums are subject to fermentation and must be preserved from damage caused by microbiologic attack. Also, both starch and natural gums tend to increase the mud viscosity undesirably. Furthermore, the quantity of material required may be quite large. This is especially true when substantial amounts of salts are present. In such a case small addition* of starch may increase rather than reduce the filtration rate of the mud. Carboxy-methyl-cellulose, a chemically altered form of cellulose, has some advantages over starch. It is effective in smaller concentrations and does not increase the viscosity as much as

Discussion of the paper of J. PARSE CHANNING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 529 to 538. FRED H. RINDGE, JR., * New York, N. Y.-It is interesting to note that although this movement was started only seven years ago at Yale, it has spread in that brief time to 200 colleges and technical schools, anti thousands of men are interested in it. There are 3,000 graduates who became acquainted with the movement in college days anti are now promoting the industrial betterment idea all over the country. Some of these men are employed entirely in this work, and the number of such workers is constantly increasing. We feel we are really doing a very fundamental thing in getting so many coming engineers and prospective employers of labor to interest themselves in these things which we have been discussing this morning; these things which are so vital to efficiency and success in any line of business or engineering to-clay. Of course the institutions located in our large industrial centers have the greatest opportunity for practical service. But I have just returned from one college, Pennsylvania State College, where 300 engineering students in three clays signed up as interested in this movement and as anxious to take active part in the work this summer. That is one of a number of colleges situated in towns where there are 110 industrial opportunities. Therefore, their field of service must be where they work

The discovery of eight new oil fields, two of which may be of major importance, was the outstanding record in Michigan this year. These new fields have helped to support the declining production from old areas and place the total of 18,559,000 bbl. in line with the past six or seven years. Thus, it appears that Michigan is doing its part in maintaining the production of the country in the third year of the war. The new fields are in the central basin area where oil was first discovered in Michigan, thus tending to focus attention on the deeper part of the lower peninsula of the state. Through 1944 the state of Michigan has produced a total of 222,-641,580 bbl. of crude oil from 100 pools, many of which arc relatively small. Among the previous1y discovered fields Reed City is still the outstanding producer, with Fork, Headquarters, and Adams following in the order named. The Reed City pool produced a little over 5,000,00 bbl., which was more than one third of the state's total for the year. Almost two thirds of the year's total oil production came from fields discovered in the past five years. Maps A map of the oil and gas fields of Michigan in 1943, published in the A.I.M.E. report for 1944,* shows the main producing areas and should be referred to if information in regard to their location is desired. The producing zones are shown in the columnar section in the same publi- cation." The data in Tables I and 2 have been carefully ' checked and every effort has been made to show as complcte information as possible. New Discoveries and New Developments Eight new producing areas were discovered during 1944 which, in order of importance, are: Deep River Field.—The discovery well in the Deep River field was drilled by Don Rayburn and others, and should be listed as a chance discovery, as, from a geological standpoint, it was not considered favorable until oil was found at a depth of 2838 ft. in a dolomitic layer in the top of the Dundee limestone. The first well was completed in January 1944, with an initial production of 2500 bbl. By the end of the year 15 wells had been completed, proying an area 2 1/2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Coldttater Field.-The Coldwater field was discovered in August 1944, by the Sohio Oil Co. Production is from secondary dolomite at the top of the Dundee at a depth of 3703 ft. To the end of 1944 nine wells had been drilled on 40-acre spacing. Essexville Field.—Essexville field was discovered by United Drillers and Producers, Inc. Eight wells had been completed to the Dundee lime by the end of 1944, and prospects were good for further development during 1945. Hilliards Field.—Hilliards field was discovered by Cook and Fortney. Production is from the Traverse lime at an average depth of 1588 feet,

The rate of drilling operations in the West Texas district during 1940 was approximately equal to that of 1939. The total number of wells dillled in the area during the year was 1834, of which 1716 were completed as oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 106 were dry holes. The number of wildcat wells drilled during the year was comparatively small. The drilling of inside locations in proven areas and the drilling of wells for the purpose of extending the productive limits in producing fields constituted the bulk of development during 1940. Gaines County led all other counties in the district in the total number of oil-well completions. The oil production totaled 83,345,381 bbl., the highest figure for any year since proration was begun. The 1940 oil production exceeded the 1939 production by approximately four million barrels. Discoveries While comparatively few new oil-producing areas were discovered during 1940, it appears that the oil production found in simpson lime in the Abell field, pecos County, was an outstanding discovery for the year. This was the second Ordovician discovery in Pecos County. Taubert, McKee & Siemoneit located its discovery well, V. W. Crockett No. 1, set. 4 1/2 H. & T. C. R.R, co, survey in the Imperial area of northwestern Pecos County. The top of pay was encountered at 5270 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5357 ft. in simpson lime, on act. 17, I940. The initial production was 928 bbl. of 43" gravity sweet oil in 11 hr. 23 min., flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing with gas-oil ratio of 783 cu. ft. per barrel. Following the completion of the discovery well, large blocks of land were leased in the area, and several locations were made toward the close of the year. There is every indication that the Abell field will become a major producing field in the West Texas district. There was no pipe-line outlet for the field at the end of the year. Shipley-Silurian field, discovered by the Gulf Oil Corporation, appears to be another major addition to the oil reserves in 1940. The discovery well, Wristen Brothers No. 5, is in sec. 18, block 5, H. & T. C. R.R. Co. survey in Ward County. The well was drilled to a total depth of 9187 ft. and was plugged back to 7075 ft. The Silurian lime section was acidized with 3000 gal., from 6993 to 7075 ft., and on Dec. 5, 1940, the well was completed for initial production of 3040 bbl- of 32.2" gravity oil in 24 hr., flowing through tubing. Todd Deep field, Crockett County, was discovered by the Continental Oil Co. et al. The discovery well, J. S. Todd No. 2, set. 29, block WX1 G.C. & S.F. R.R. Co. survey, was completed on April 3, 1940. The top of pay was encountered at 5623 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5691 ft. for initial production of 1613 bbl. of 40.6' gravity oil flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing. The pay section was found in Strawn lime of Pennsylvanian age. There were six producing wells in the field at the end of the year. This appears to be another major discovery in 1940. THE progress of mineral industry education will be limited to the period prior to World War II and will be considered as primarily a division of engineering education. Its relation to progress in the mineral industry and to the activities of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will be emphasized. The history of mineral industry education has been recorded most completely and authoritatively by Dr. T. T. Read in his recent volume in the Seeley W. Mudd Series of American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers publications, entitled, The Development of Mineral Industry Education in the United States. Therefore, most of the historical details will be omitted from the discussion and an effort will be made to point out significant developments and to analyze trends. INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT AND SIGNIFICANT POINTS IN PROGRESS Among the significant points in the development of mineral industry education in the United States since 1871, the following deserve particular mention: I. The number of institutions offering undergraduate instruction has increased, particularly during the years 1890 to 1925; the number of students enrolled in undergraduate study has increased greatly, largely on account of the development of courses in petroleum engineering and increasing interest in metallurgy. 2. The selection of students to be admitted to undergraduate courses has been improved through the advisement, counseling, and guidance programs sponsored by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 3. Improved instruction methods and the training of the teaching staff have been promoted by the educational institutions themselves, but with the most effective stimulus and guidance of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 4. The accrediting of undergraduate curricula through the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, considering both qualitative and quantitative criteria, has done much to improve standards of instruction in engineering education for the mineral industry. 5. Undergraduate curricula and courses are revised currently to meet the needs of the American mineral industry. New curricula are developed currently to permit specialization in technical fields, particularly in the fourth year of undergraduate work. 6. There has been a strengthening of the fundamental courses in mathematics, physics, mechanics, and chemistry, and at the same time these courses are being adapted to the most recent developments in the industry, including metallurgy, geophysics, petroleum engineering, petroleum technology, ceramics and so forth. 7. There has been continuing improvement in plant and laboratory facilities of the educational institutions.

Deformation mechanisms in room-dry and water-saturated specimens of Charcoal Granodiorite, shortened at 10-4s-1, at effective pressures (Pe) to 100 MPa and temperatures to partial melting (?1050°C) are documented with a view toward providing criteria to recognize and characterize the deformation for geological and engineering applications. Above 800°C strength decreases dramatically at effective pressures ? 50 MPa and water-weakening reduces strength an additional 30 to 40% at Pe = 100 MPa. Strains at failure are only 0.1 to 2.2 percent with macroscopic ductility (within this range) increasing as the effective pressures are increased and in wet versus dry tests. Shattering (multiple faulting) gives way to faulting along a single zone to failure without macroscopic faulting as ductility increases. Microscopically, cataclasis (extension microfracturing and thermal cracking with rigid-body motions) predominates at all conditions. Dislocation gliding contributes little to the strain. Precursive extension microfractures coalesce to produce the throughgoing faults with gouge zones exhibiting possible Riedel shears. Incipient melting, particularly in wet tests, produces a distinctive texture along feldspar grain boundaries that suggests a grain-boundary-softening effect contributes to the weakening. In addition, it is demonstrated that the presence of water does not lead to more microfractures, but to a reduction in the stresses required to initiate and propagate them.

Beryllium is the most soluble of the double-acceptor impurities in germanium; the solubility is at least 1 x 10 19 atoms cm3. Photoconductive, optical, and electrical measurements were made on a set of Ge:Be samples grown without other intentionally added imp~ivities. The excited-states spectrum of beryllium in germanium was determined both in zero field and in magnetic fields up to 30 kc. It was found that the absorption 0-f lines in the vicinity of the G line increased markedly with increasing magnetic field. The ioniza-tion energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mez: using the excited-states spectrum. An infrared detector using a Ge:Be element was found to have a normalized detectivity D* (50 p, 1000 cps, 1 cps) of 9 X ldO cm-~ps"~-w-'. The Ge:Be sambles exhibited low-field breakdown and inibzirity band conduction effects at low temperatures. WHILE the properties of most dopants in germanium have been thoroughly investigated, the properties of beryllium in germanium have had relatively little attention. Much of the work that has been done' has been concerned with the properties of singly ionized beryllium in germanium. The purpose of the present work was to determine the photoconductive and electrical properties of beryllium-doped germanium (Ge:~e) with a small concentration of other electrically active impurities. Ge:Be is of special interest since beryllium is the most soluble of the known double-acceptor impurities in germanium. MATERIALS PREPARATION A set of &:Be crystals with beryllium concentrations between 5 x 1013 and 1x 10'' cmm3 and without other intentionally added impurities was grown in a hydrogen atmosphere by the horizontal zone-refining techniques described by Swiggard and Shenker.2 The segregation coefficient of beryllium in germanium was found to be about 0.07 and its maximum solubility was found to be greater than 1 x 10'' atoms cm-3 which is in agreement with previous results.' Most of the crystals were found to have a small net concentration of shallow acceptors; for example, a crystal having a beryllium concentration of 1.1 X 1016 cm-3 was found to have a net concentration of shallow acceptors of less than 1.5 X 1013 cm-3. Ingots designed to have a beryllium concentration of 1 x 1017 cm-3 or less exhibited a loss of electrically active beryllium. That is, the beryllium concentration was lower than expected and the decrease of the beryllium concentration along the length of the ingot was much larger than expected. It is hypothesized that this effect is due to the oxidation of the beryllium by the residual oxygen in the system. This effect is similar to but not as severe as the effect observed with boron in germani~m.3, 4 OPTICAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM The excited-states spectrum of neutral beryllium atoms in germanium was studied by measuring the infrared optical absorption spectrum. A typical spectrum is shown in Fig. 1; the labeling of the absorption lines follows that of Fisher and Fan.* The spacings between the observed lines and the D line are nearly equal to the corresponding spacings for the other ac -ceptors in germanium.5-7 By the use of the theoretical result67' that the neutral impurity ionization energy is 2.53 mev larger than the energy of the D line, the ionization energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mev at 4.2"K. This method yields a more precise value of the impurity ionization energy than the usual Hall effect method.' The absorption spectrum of Ge:Be was also measured as a function of magnetic field using a magnetic field parallel to the incident radiation and using unpolarized radiation. A typical spectrum taken at 30 kG is shown in Fig. 2. An unexpected observation is that the absorption of the lines in the vicinity of the G line (there is a strong possibility that some of these lines may be associated with lines other than the G line) increases with magnetic field. The S.P. log is shown to be a measurement of the potential drop along the drill hole, caused by ohmic effect in the mud. The notion of static S.P. is brought forward, and its relation to the S.P. log is discussed. Other factors influencing the shape and amplitude of the log are considered; attention is given to conditions encountered in practice. Numerous figures are given illustrating graphically the results; these figures are of particular interest for comparison with field examples. The S.P. log, although indicating permeability, is not an absolute measurement of permeability, nor of porosity, of the formations traversed by a drill hole. It is affected by several parameters, such as resistivity of formations and mud, thickness of formations, and others, which should be appraised carefully. Simple rules have been established for a better distinction of the boundaries of permeabl: sections, particularly in difficult cases, such as those encountered in highly resistive formations. A systematic application of the established principles will assist in obtaining more information from the S.P. log than was possible thus far; for instance, under favorable conditions, presence of oil may be detected, or amount of shale in sands may be estimated. Introduction The S.P. log, or spontaneous potential log, has been known and widely used during the last 15 years for the location of permeable beds traversed by drill holes.1,2 In electrical logging practice, the S.P. log is shown on the left hand side track of the record (as may be seen in later examples) where it can be easily correlated and interpreted with the resistivity curves located to the right. Usually, the S.P. log consists of a base line, more or less straight, having excursions or "peaks" to the left. The base line frequently has been found to correspond to impervious beds, while the peaks are usually found opposite permeable strata. Measurements which will indicate positively the presence of permeability in the formations, and which will give accurately the boundaries of the permeable zones, are of great importance in oil-field practice. Thus far, the S.P. log is the best approach to such determinations; unfortunately, its interpretation is not always evident. With respect to the base line of the S.P. log, it may be noticed that this line is not always at a definite location on the chart. Sometimes it may shift abruptly, while other times a gradual drift is apparent. As far as the peaks are concerned, their shape is not uniform; some are rounded while others are sharp. Also, from other data, it may be found that occasionally the peaks extend appreciably beyond the boundaries of permeable zones into zones which are not everywhere permeable. A comparison with permeability measurements made on cores has often confirmed that there was no definite correspondence between the magnitudes of the peaks and the permeability values. Its up-dip productive limit is defined by truncation of the productive sands, and the down-dip limit is defined by deterioration of sand quality rather than by the presence of an oil-water contact. The crude oil is of 29" API gravity, is relatively viscous and was saturated with dissolved gas at the original reservoir pressure. Consideratiqn of the physical characteristics of the reservoir indicates that natural water encroachment will be negligible, and that the producing mechanism will be a dissolved gas drive augmented by gravity drainage. Performance to date tends to confirm this. These faults show only minor displacements for the horizon contoured in Fig. 1, but they do show a pronounced displacement of the immediately overlying beds. Similar faults are thought to exist in TWP 1S-5W; however, since the detailed geological studies necessary to properly define these faults were not available to the author, no attempt to show them in Fig. 1 has been made. mountain region to M tht Coast points for domestic consumption and for export are shown in Table 11. There is considerable disparity in rates from both Rock Springs, Wyo., and Castle Gate, Utah, to the four coast cities where the slack coal is to be used for purposes other than export. The rate on coal to be exported is the same from either starting point to any of the four coast cities even though there is a difference of as much as 341 miles in the shipping distance. It is interesting to note that the freight rate between Sunnyside, Utah, and Fontana, Calif., on coking coal is $5.05 per ton and that coal up to 8 in. can be moved on this rate if it is suitable for coking. This rate was published late in 1942 on a contemplated annual movement of more than 500,000 tons. There have been decreases in freight rates since 1923 on movements of slack coal from Utah into Seattle and Portland due to pressure on the railroads and to greater. quantity of coal shipped. It is the author,', opinion that a movement of slack coal in excess of 3 million tons of coal per year from Utah to any point in central California would justify a freight rate equal to that puhlished for Fontana, Calif.. or $5.05 per ton. The movement of 3 1/2 million tons of coal per year on the basis of 240 mine working days per year would require that 14,600 tons be handled each mine working day. If it is assumed that shipments could be arranged for a 6-day week, the average railway movement would he 11,200 tons, or approximately 3 trains containing fifty-five 70-ton coal cars per day. Such movements of coal would require railroad equipment represented by the investment amounts stated in Table 12 and entail the services of 250 men. Table 12 ... It also appears that the lowest freight rate that could be expecled between intermountain points and the central California area would be $5.05 per ton, making a total cost of coal delivered at a plant site of $9.65 per ton. Conelusions The following are the author's conclusions: 1. Coal mines in Utah and in the Kemmerer and Rock Springs districts of Wyoming could increase annual production by 6 1/2 million tons per year. 2. Under present conditions coal could probably be delivered to any steam electric plant in central California at a price not to exceed $9.65 per ton. 3. The use of coal at such a price, while higher than the equivalent present price of fuel oil, is entirely feasible. 4. There are adequate railroad facilities for movements of large quantities of coal from the intermountain region to the Rest Coast. 5. In a national emergency it probably would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain sufficient oil to meet requirements of the greatly expanded West Coast steam electric generatsing capacity. 6. The intermountain region contains ample coal reserves to supply all conceivable demands for West Coast power generation for a number of generations. 7. Increasing demands of labor threaten to lessen, if not eliminate, savings in cost of coal production through the use of new mining machinery. 8. Continuation of experiments in socialism by the Federal Government through construction of hydroelectric generating plants, particularly those unrelated to land-use reclamation, defies justification. Rates under this concept of a governmental function are subsidized through greater taxation of its people. Private capital is available to construct steam plants, or hydro plants where feasible, and should be permitted to continue in order to preserve the principles of our free enterprise system. DISCUSSION (L. C. McCabe and Robert P. Koenig, presiding) C. C;. BALl*—I was asked to lead off the discussion, but it is not with the thought that I might be able to add anything to the paper. The thoroughness with which it was prepared rather forestalls the asking of many questions. Your treatment, Mr. Heiner, is a very valuable contribution. I do want to suggest—that although you have limited your study to this specific question, with certain geographic limitations, many of the things in your paper apply just as well to the eastern coals. I want to agree 100 pct with your final conclusion concerning government-subsidized construction. Id. C. McCabe*—It is certainly worthwhile to take stock occasionally to see where we are going in problems of this nature. I agree with Mr. Heiner that ultimately the only reliable source of fuel that the West Coast has is coal hut the time factor is the difficult element to evaluate. Just before I came here I discussed this subject with N. B. Hinson, Vice President and Executixe Engineer of the Southern California Edison Company, and Chairman of the West Coast Inter-Power Exchange Committee. He has given much thought to utilities' fuel supply and it was very helpful to me in preparing a discussion of the paper to talk with him beforehand. Stock taking and forecasting of future development are essential to the continuing success of any enterprise. Mr. Heiner has called attention to the unprecedented growth of central and southern California and to the increased demands for fuel and power which have accompanied it. He discusses the increased fuel oil and natural gas requirements and the probable limits on the future use of these fuels and of hydroelectric power. In contrast to the calculable limits of these sources of electric energy, the author points to the availability of enormous reserves of coal in the Rocky Mountain States adjacent to the Pacific Coast which can be utilized for power generation. That there will be increased use of coal for power generation in the area under discussion is generally accepted hut it is in the timetable of such development that there is not complete agreement. In a recent report, Mr. Hinson reviewed the future power outlook for the Pacific southwest area. He pointed out that the use of steam plants in connection with water power plants in this region has made the maximum use of hydroelectric energy possible, and that the correct balance between hydro and steam generating plants produces the most economical overall system. A new leasl-squares method is Presented for determining lattice parameters of hexagonal or tetragonul structures. The method is adapted for use on electronic computers and involves a reiterative procedure. The correction factor employed raries linearly with the lattice parameter, a (determined from the Brag, angle). In contrast, Cohen's method and recent modifications of it use a correction factor that varies incersely as the squure of the lattice paramneter, a. While the recent modifications attempt to improve the precision of the extrapolated lattice parameter, a, (or-cu). by stressing the importance of the weighting factor. the present approach emphasizes the need for choosing the correct extrapolation function. A comparison between the present method (the Linear method) and Cohen's method indicates that the Linear method may be more appropriale in certain cases. through a priori no critertion appears to he available for making a chorce between the methods. The size of hexagonal and tetragonal crystal lattices is determined by two parameters, a, and c,. Although in principle the two lattice parameters can be determined independently from reflections for which h - k = 0 and 1 = 0, respectively, in practice this may be inconvenient (because of the angular positions at which these reflections may occur) or not easily possible (because of low intensity). Furthermore, if a high precision or accuracy is required, the limited number of reflections of this type available, particularly in the high-angle region, is not sufficient for the necessary corrections (mainly due to absorption) to be determined with accuracy. Several methods1-7,11-13 have been proposed employing all reflections, to obtain the optimum values, a. and co, either by a trial and error procedure or a least-squares fit. Of the latter method, cohen's5 is the best known one since it provides explicit expressions for the optimum a. and c,. However, Cohen's method is only strictly valid if an extrapolation function is used that varies linearly with l/a2 or lie2 (see Section 3), a requirement that does not appear to be generally appreciated. On the other hand, all the better known and more widely used A recent trial and error method was proposed by Massalski and King8,7 who computed extensive auxiliary tables of axial ratios vs the functions A = [(4/3)(h2 + hk +k2) + l2+(a/c)2] and C = A(c/a)2 used in computing a and c values from the observed Bragg angles. These values of a and c were then plotted against a function which permitted linear extrapolation. As a criteria; for the "optimum" values, Massalski and King rely upon a visual fitting of the line through points representing reflections of low 1-index points to compute the extrapolated value of ao and high 1-index reflections to obtain CO. The successive computations and graphical plotting required to reach the "optimum" value are quite lengthy and tedious even on a desk calculator and no quantitative assurance is obtained of having in fact selected the optimum value.* If the method of Massalski and King is used on an electronic computer, then their published tables become redundant and a least-squares fit becomes a natural selection for the choice of optimum values. Such an approach will be called the Linear method. For work now in progress on the effect of certain physical variables on the lattice parameters of hexagonal crystals, it has become essential to determine the confidence limits of small changes in the lattice parameters. Since extrapolation functions that varied linearly with a and c actually also appeared to vary linearly with l/a2 or l/c2 when tested against published as well as our data, a comparison of Cohen's method and the Linear method was considered desirable (Sections 3 and 4). For the latter method an electronic computer was required since a reiterative procedure to obtain the optimum ao and co values had to be employed. The first producing wells completed in the Kettleman Hills arca were noteworthy for their high gas-oil ratios. As a result they became the object of criticism, and controversies arose based on their alleged lack of gas conservation. Ultimately protracted hearings ensued in the District Court of the area, and diverse rulings and subsequent modifications have been handed down affecting the permissible gas-oil ratios. When the Kettleman North Dome Association was formed in April, 1931, and the control of the major portion of the North Dome area vested therein, it was decided to produce only those wells which had a relatively low gas-oil ratio. Among the wells having the highest gas-oil ratio were the Milham Elliott No. 1 (the discovery well) and the Continental Elliott 12-8. drilled as an offset to it. Under the numbering system adopted by the Kettleman North Dome Association, these wells are now known as 88-2P and 1-12P, respectively. Milham Elliott No. 1 was originally drilled to 7236 ft., then redrilled to 7108 ft. The upper portion of the Temblor Horizon produces with a very large gas-oil ratio; production which actually consists of light crude oil with an accompanying large.volume of gas. Little was known as to the location of the Temblor formation at that time but it is now generally accepted that its top was encountered at 6180 ft., giving 928 ft. of penetration. Initial production was estimated at 4000 bbl. of oil and 80 to 90 million cubic feet of gas per day, giving a gas-oil ratio in excess of 20,000 cu. ft. of gas per bbl. of oil. This ultimately increased to a ratio of about 48,000 at the time the well was killed when it was producing about 1100 bbl. of oil and 52 million cubic feet of gas, with a flow pressure of 1200 pounds. The Continental Elliott 12-8 was drilled to a depth of 6876 ft. with the top of the Temblor at 6100, giving a penetration of 776 ft. On the basis of data obtained from microscopic examination, melting observations, cooling curves, X-ray analyses, and resistance measurements, phase diagrams have been proposed for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti alloy systems. Both are simple eutectic systems and have no terminal solid solubility or intermediate phases. The eutectic between thorium and columbium occurs at a composition of about 8 wt pct Cb and a temperature of 1435°C. The Th-Ti eutectic occurs at 1190°C at the composition 12 wt pct Ti. No change was observed in the transformation temperature of thorium in either system or in the titanium transformation. RECENT study of thorium and its alloys has been promoted because of the possibility of employing this metal in nuclear reactors. Their corrosion resistant properties, nuclear characteristics, and high melting points put columbium and titanium among the many metals being employed in the study of thorium alloys. Since a knowledge of the phase relationships would be important in the application of such an alloy, investigations were undertaken to propose phase diagrams for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti systems. Experimental Procedures Thorium metal sponge was specially prepared for use in this investigation. Carbon in a quantity less than 0.04 wt pct was the principal impurity. There was also less than 0.01 pct each of iron, calcium, zinc, aluminum, and nitrogen in the thorium. Columbium, both as a powder and sheet metal, was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The manufacturer's specifications indicated that the metal contains less than 1 wt pct total impurities. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 0.18 pct C in the powder and less than 0.05 pct C in the sheet. The titanium used was commercial sponge, reported to be 99.5 pct Ti. An analysis showed that this metal contained 0.2 pct Fe. Preparation of Alloys—Since the metals used in this investigation are reactive and might become contaminated on melting in a refractory crucible, the alloys were prepared by arc melting. The titanium sponge was employed in the form of small lumps while the columbium additions were made either as pressed pellets of powder or as clippings from sheet. The alloying material and the thorium sponge were melted together under argon in conventional arc melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water cooled copper crucible.

THE only previous investigation of the phase equilibria in the Ta-Pd system was reported by Greenfield and Beck.1 Their work (actually a portion of a much broader survey) was limited to the composition range 50 to 75 at. pct Ta and to a single temperature, 1000°C. The results indicated that no intermediate phases were present at this temperature. They pointed out that this was an unexpected result in view of the fact that niobium, which belongs to the same group in the periodic table as tantalum and has essentially the same atomic size, forms a o phase with palladium.' Also, tantalum in combination with rhodium,' iridium,' or platinum' stabilizes the s phase. By analogy, the Ta-Pd system would also be expected to contain a s phase. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to explore more fully the phase relationships in this system. Alloys were prepared by arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth in an argon-helium atmosphere. The purity of the starting materials was greater than 99.9 pct. The weight losses on melting were less than 1 pct and therefore the alloys were not analyzed chemically. Specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil, encapsulated in quartz capsules under a vacuum of at least 1 x 10-5 mm of Hg, annealed as indicated in Table I, and water quenched. Optical and X-ray metallography were used for identifying the phases present in the annealed and quenched alloys. The alloys were resistant to attack by several acids; however, a sodium cyanide electroetch and an immersion etch containing 1 part HF, 1 part HNO3, 2 parts H2SO4, and 5 parts H2O by volume were found satisfactory. The X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera and filtered copper or chromium radiation. A summary of the phases found in this investigation is presented in Table I. No attempt was made to determine the composition limits of the various phases. The present results indicate that this system consists of two terminal solid solutions separated by at least four intermediate phases at the approximate compositions Ta3Pd, -TaPd, TaPd,, and TaPd3. The Ta-rich solid solution, containing less than 10 at. pct Pd at 1150°C, is in equilibrium with a o phase which is stable in the vicinity of 25 at. pct Pd. The latter phase is also in equilibrium with a bct phase at the equiatomic composition. At high temperatures it appears that the Pd-rich solid solution extends to at least 66.6 at. pct Pd and is in equilibrium with the bct phase. When annealed at 900°C, a sample containing 66.6 at. pct Pd transformed to an unidentified phase designated as X. An X-ray diffraction pattern of this phase contained sharp low-angle lines while the high-angle lines were characteristically diffuse. The observed d-spacings and relative intensities for lines in the low-angle region are presented in Table 11. In the vicinity of 70 at. pct Pd an intermediate phase having the TiA13-type structure is formed. It is stable to at least 1100°C, and presumably dissolves congruently into the ter-
