This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or book- keeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. T he emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

Mine sealing programs for the alleviation of acid mine drainage were begun by the Federal Government in the '30's. As part of an acid mine research project to The Ohio State University, a field test was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Details of the tests made at the McDaniels mine show the feasibility of air-sealing and flooding an acid-producing drift coal mine. Work by the University continues. The Federal Government undertook in the early thirties an extensive mine sealing program for the alleviation of acid mine drainage. In the states of West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania many general summaries have been made on this program but no critical evaluation with supporting data has been found on the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Because of this it was decided to undertake a field testing program as part of an acid mine research project of the Engineering Experiment Station, The Ohio State University. The objective of this phase of the project was to develop and install a field research laboratory for acid mine drainage studies. Specifications for such a mine laboratory were developed and resulted from the following considerations: 1) Size and preservation—the test mine shou1d be of limited size to permit frequent and detailed examinations; it should be in a reasonably sound condition to permit safe entry. 2) Isolation—the mine should be physically separated from all other mines. 3) Openings—a minimum number would be desirable to reduce the sealing problem. 4) Structure—the mine especially near the openings should be structurally sound. 5) Acid production—the mine should be producing significant quantities of acid. After considerable searching, the McDaniels mine was selected in the Hocking coal field in Vinton County just above Lake Hope State Park in southeastern Ohio. The small drift mine in the middle Kittaning coal consisted of two small rooms with one mine opening about 6 ft above a seasonal stream bed. Before it was finally decided to seal the mine, a short study was made of the acid drainage over several months. Fig. 1 shows a plot of acidity (milligrams per liter), flow (gallons per minute), and acid production (pounds per day) vs time over the sampling period. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. THE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulpho-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. CLASSIFICATION OF ORES For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their line content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the line, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Typical analyses of both classes are as follows: Class A Class B Insol 56.70 75.90 Al203 2.30 3.40 Fe 3.26 3.48 CaO 1.57 5.12 S 1.79 1.80 Mg0 0.21 1.08 Ignition loss 3.20 6.50 99.03 97.28 The beds of each class of ore are made as large as possible with the available ore as it comes in, to avoid changing from one bed to the other any oftener than necessary. Each roaster will handle 50 percent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific- indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1971 at 5 million tons valued at $200 million, averaging $40.00 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface smoothness, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 3rd edition of Industrial Rocks and Minerals, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses.

TOO often, many foremen; superintendents, managers, and executives, "The Bosses" of the oil and mining industries, do not fully realize: (1) How much personal actions '.on the job" may reduce their effectiveness in getting work done; and, (2) The importance of harmonious relations with their fellow men. Today. these qualities of personality in the people entrusted with the positions of responsibility are more important than ever with the shortages of labor so critical in vital war production. Likewise, many engineers do not fully realize that their work is essentially executive in character; i.e., other people do the actual labor. Without their help. the engineer's work would not be done. A clearer appreciation of this fact would increase their interest: (1) in the nontechnical aspects of their work. and, (2)in their relations with others, particularly the individuals in their own organization. Consequently, these engineers would be more successful in equipping themselves for greater responsibilities and increased remuneration.

The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

Results of experimental work on the in situ combustion process were first published in this country in 1953' when Kuhn and Koch described results of a three-well test in Jefferson County, Okla. Shortly there-after Grant and Szasz2 described field studies in Nowata County, Okla., in which several modifications of the basic combustion process were investigated by injection of various oxidizing gas mixtures other than air. In the past five years speculation concerning this method of oil recovery has continued, with a number of interesting papers on various aspects of in situ combustion appearing in the literature3,4,5,6,7. However, only one of these' provided actual engineering information on pattern-type field experiments. The primary objectives of the Oklahoma three-well test were to check operation of specially designed electrical ignition equipment and evaluate problems associated with initiation of combustion in a natural oil sand reservoir. Immediately following successful completion of this test in the Pontotoc sand, plans were activated for a second field experiment to be conducted in the same sand a short distance away. The objective of this second field test1 as to establish a relationship between field observations and information derived from laboratory experimentation and computations. Secondary objectives of the test were to develop operating tech- niques and define operating problems, and to obtain information that would assist in the economic and engineering appraisals of the process. Careful planning was required since this test was designed with the hope of providing basic information on the characteristics and operation of a combustion drive. It was necessary to include test facilities which would not only permit precise control and measurement of the process variables but would also provide sufficient flexibility of control to insure that variables in the combustion process could be studied during the course of the test under a wide range of conditions. In order to accomplish these objectives elaborate instrumentation and several control wells were included in the design of the test installation. This type installation was felt to be well suited for an experimental study, but was in no respect intended as a counterpart of a commercial-scale operation. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY WORK An important objective of the field experiment, as stated previously, has been to obtain reliable data on operating variables which might be compared with similar data obtained in laboratory combustion tests. The value of successful correlations between quantities that can be measured in the laboratory and those obtained in a full-scale commercial venture has been well established for other industrial processes. The difficulty of following a process underground should make such correlations even more essential here. Also. approaching the field test phase of development of in situ combustion, it was considered desirable to precede design of test equipment with laboratory combustion studies under a variety of conditions to establish likely ranges of variables. These included temperature, air injection rate, frontal advance rate and produced gas composition.

Knoop hardness measurements were carried out on large grains of iodide titanium containing different amounts of oxygen. For each oxygen content the hardness is recorded ainingas a function of the crystal orientation and of the angle 4 between the indenter diagonal and the projection of the C (hexad) axis in the surface. The results can be expressed by the following relation; hardness = n-k cos 2ø, where n and k are constants for a given oxygen content and crystal surface orientation. A NISOTROPY of hardness is a well-known phe-nomenon and has been reported for many metals.1-3 At the present time, however, such information is not available in the literature for titanium. Consequently, a systematic study of the simultaneous effects of oxygen content and crystallographic orientation on the hardness of titanium was undertaken in this laboratory. Evaluations of oxygen content in titanium are frequently carried out through hardness tests. Although such procedures may be justified in small grain specimens, the results of the present investigation indicate that the anisotropy of hardness should be taken into account in the case of coarsegrained specimens as well as in the case of pronounced preferred orientation. Materials and Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium, 99.99 pet pure and containing of the order of 0.002 wt pet O, was used throughout this investigation. The metal was arc melted in an argon atmosphere and cold rolled into strips 1/16 in. thick. These strips were subsequently recrystal-lized and strain annealed in vacuum (10" mm Hg or better) at 850°C in order to produce crystals varying in diameter from 10 to 25 mm. Oxygen was introduced into selected large crystals by heating at 700°C in an atmosphere of pure oxygen under an observed pressure of approximately 50 mm Hg. Each sample was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 100 hr, in order to homogenize the oxygen content throughout the specimen. It was found that longer annealing was not necessary, for no change of surface hardness in a given direction was detected after prolonged annealing. The oxygen content was determined by the difference in weight of the specimens before and after the oxidation-annealing cycle. The accuracy of oxygen determination is within ±0.1 mg in samples weighing 0.5 to 1 g. A vacuum fusion analysis of oxygen was performed on several samples and gave results in good agreement with the ones obtained by the weight change. It should be emphasized that expected weight losses through evaporation of the metal in vacuum at 850°C' are many orders of magnitude lower than the precision of these measurements. Following the annealing treatment, both oxidized and unoxidized crystals were carefully polished. All detectable traces of surface cold working were removed by repeated polishing and etching. Laue back reflection X-ray patterns were taken for each crystal for the purpose of determining the orientation and ascertaining the absence of substructures detectable by this method. Hardness measurements, using a 1 kg load, were subsequently carried out on a Tukon hardness tester equipped with a Knoop indenter. The Knoop indenter was used throughout this work because indentations obtained by means of a Vickers indenter are considerably distorted due to the anisotropy of the elastic constants in titanium. Such distortions are much less pronounced in the case of Knoop indentations, although for some orientations a cer-

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

Argentina's oil production continues in its upward trend. The year 1940 closed with an important increase over 1939; that is, 1,996,371 bbl., or 10.72 per cent. The Government oil fields (Y.P.F.) are responsible for these results, as their total output was 12,474,655 bbl., which compared with the 10,222, 533 bbl. produced in 1939 represent an increase of 2,252,122 bbl., or 22.03 per cent. Fields operated by private companies yielded 8,134,882 bbl., against 8,390,633 bbl. in 1939, a decrease of 255,751 bbl. (3.04 per cent). To the total of 20,609,538 bbl. produced in 1940 in Argentina, the Comodoro Rivadavia field contributed 14,976,222 bbl.; Plaza Huincul, 1,275,814 bbl.; the Province of Salta, 1,845,1977 bbl. and the Province of Mendoza, 2,51I,475 bbl. The eastern Washington— Idaho clay region stretches along the northeast margin of the Columbia basin for 150 mil es. The three better known and developed clay areas are Clayton, Wash., (2 miles north of Spokane); Mica, Wash., (10 miles southeast of Spokane); and Moscow-Deary-Bovill, Latah County, Idaho (about 80 to 90 miles southeast of Spokane) see Fig. 1. Clays from the eastern Washington— Idaho clay area have been mined for more than 50 years. At present Mica, Washington deposits are used by the Gladding—McBean & Co. to make a variety of bricks and ceramic products and Latah County, Idaho clays are used by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. to make refractories. The Anaconda Co. made an intensive investigation of the clay deposits in the northeastern Washington-!daho area in 1919 to determine the existence of a supply of raw materials from which alumina could be made. The greater part of the work, which included systematic drilling and shaft sinking, was concentrated at Mica, Wash. This was part of a research project carrted on by the Anaconda Metallurgical Research Dept. under the direction of Frederick Laist and F. Frick and it was terminated in 4920. V. D. Perry, Vice President and Chief Geologist for The Anaconda Co., in 1952 assigned the writer to make a preliminary study of clay and other potential sources of alumina ore in the Pacific Northwest with particular emphasis on those deposits which might be of future importance to The Anaconda Co9s. then new aluminurri plant at Columbia Falls, Mont.

Students of the modern blast furnace seem unanimously agreed that they are observing a major revolution in practice. Rather than changing construction and operation of the furnaces, most of the great advances now under way deal with the raw materials feed. Prepared burdens have gained increasing significance during recent years. Sizing, concentration, and agglomeration have all become bywords to greater production and reduced operating costs. The remarkable results with test furnaces in which self-fluxing sinter makes up part or all of the ore charge foretell even greater improvements. Other investigators have reported many of these advances, and it is enough to predict here that more and more operators will turn to the use of self-fluxing sinter. This change in the operator's requirements comes at a time when one major section of the iron ore regions, the Mesabi, is finding it difficult to maintain, let alone improve, the tonnage and grade of its shipping product. To meet the new demands with respect to quality and structure, the iron ore producers of this area turned first to screening, crushing, and concentrating intermediate ores. More recently, declining higher-grade reserves have led to multimillion-dollar investments in plants to treat the low-grade magnetic taconites.1,2 To yield a suitable concentrate, the Minnesota magnetic taconites must be ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh, too fine to be charged directly to the blast furnace or to make acceptable feed to the sinter strand. The pelletizing process was developed to meet the structure requirements laid down by the blast furnace operators. Taconite producers are succeeding in their efforts just when the attention of the blast furnace man is being drawn to the great advantages of self-fluxing sinter.3 The taconite operators are ready with an alternative. Why not produce sclf-flus ing pellets? At the Hibbing laboratory of Pickands Mather & Co., where much of the early work was done that led to Erie Mining's 7.5-million ton taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn., preliminary investigations have been made. Present Taconite Operations: Details of this work will be clarified by a brief review of agglomeration practice in commercial taconite plants. After the taconite has been ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite grains, the ore is concentrated on magnetic separators, thickened, and filtered to about 10 pct moisture. This structure and moisture fit in closely with the conditions required to produce good balls. It has been found with taconite concentrates that at least 60 pct of the feed to the balling drum must be —325 mesh to obtain good ball compaction within reasonable time. The filter cake moisture usually permits a slight water addition at the balling drum, and further balling control is obtained by adding about 12 Ib of bentonite and 1 1/2 lb of soda ash per dry short ton of concentrate. These additives, and occasionally small quantities of fine coal, are thoroughly mixed with the filter cake ahead of balling. The swelling property of bentonite improves the green and dry strength of the balls so they can be handled without breakage until they are fired. Soda ash is added for pH control to insure maximum performance of the bentonite, and coal is added for more heat in the firing process when required. The balls, normally 3/8 to l-in. diam, are brought to a temperature of 2350" to 2500°F in the indurating furnace. Heat for this process comes from three sources: 1) fuel burned in the combustion chamber, 2) oxidation of the magnetite concentrates to hematite, and 3) coal added to the balls. Pellet strength is developed by grain growth and bridging and, if enough slag-forming constituents are present, by slag bonding. Conversion to hematite is usually close to 100 pct in the fired pellets. Batch Test Procedures: Initial studies of self-fluxing pellets were made by producing balls on a batch basis under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.
