IN order to understand how alloying elements influence hardenability through their effect on the rate of pearlite nucleation, it is advantageous to use a model to describe the mechanism of pearlite nucleation. The model which currently is most widely accepted has been described, among others, by Mehl et a1.1-3 and by Hultgren.4 Pearlite nucleation involves both the nucleation of ferrite and cementite.4,5 Cementite nucleates first, followed rapidly by the formation of ferrite at the cementite-austenite interface. The conclusion that cementite is the first phase to form during the process of pearlite nucleation is based, in part, on the observation that proeutectoid cementite is continuous with pearlitic cementite and that the orientation relationship between proeutectoid ferrite and austenite is not the same as that between pearlitic: ferrite and austenite.6,7 Recently, Smith" has suggested that the dissimilarity in orientation relations, instead of indicating the pearlite nucleation sequence, may be evidence that pearlite is nucleated in a grain adjacent to the one in which it is growing. Also, Modin9 as shown that ferrite in pearlite may be continuous with proeutectoid ferrite, and he has also shown that proeutectoid cementite is not always continuous with pearlitic cementite. Thus, it appears that the conclusion that cementite always initiates the pearlite nucleation process is open to serious question. The author believes that important evidence on the question of how pearlite is nucleated exists in the rates of pearlite nucleation of different steels. The following is a review and analysis of this evidence. If the nucleation of pearlite is considered as requiring the nucleation of both cementite and ferrite, then the time to nucleate pearlite consists of the time to nucleate the first phase to form, plus the time to nucleate the second phase at the advancing interface of the first. In the absence of a visible proeutectoid constituent, the second phase must be nucleated very soon after the first. If cementite is the first phase to form, the time to nucleate pearlite will be approximately equal to the time to nucleate cementite. Since the nucleation rate of a phase precipitating from solid solution increases with the degree of supersaturation, it would be expected that the rate of pearlite nucleation should increase with increasing carbon content. Digges10 has shown that the reverse is true. He determined the quenching velocity necessary to suppress pearlite formation in plain carbon steels as a function of carbon content. His results showed that pearlite formation could be suppressed with lower quenching velocities as the carbon content of the steel increased, at least up to 1.25 pct C, the highest carbon content he studied. Thus, it would appear that in plain carbon steels, in which pearlite is formed at the nose of the C-curve, the hypothesis that cementite nucleates first does not predict the observed change in nucleation rate. The validity of the current model of pearlite nucleation may be tested also by determining whether or not it predicts the relative influence of alloying elements on the nucleation of ferrite and pearlite. This can be done best by a consideration of the changes in a TTT diagram produced by a change in alloy content. Hultgren4 suggests that the general shape of a TTT diagram, as well as what constituents will form from austenite, can be predicted from the relative nucleation rates of ferrite and cementite. This is illustrated in the schematic diagram for a hypoeutectoid low alloy or plain carbon steel shown in Fig. 1. The C-curves for ferrite nucleation and for cementite nucleation are represented by AA' and CC', respectively, and the start of ferrite formation and pearlite formation are represented by AX and BC respectively. Adopting the current theory, Hultgren suggests that between X and C pearlite forms directly from austenite, since cementite nucleates more rapidly than ferrite in this temperature range. Conversely, at temperatures above Tx, ferrite is the first to nucleate and proeutectoid ferrite is formed. As proeutectoid ferrite grows, austenite becomes enriched in carbon, so that the cementite nucleation rate is increased. As a result, pearlite nucleation above temperature Tx is accelerated, beginning along BX and not along C'X. Temperature T, represents the temperature at which the nucleation rate of ferrite equals that of cementite. By extending this type of reasoning, using the principle that the nucleation rates of ferrite and cementite increase with increasing supersaturation of austenite with respect to these phases, it should be possible to predict the influence of carbon content on the shape of the isothermal transformation diagram. For a slightly higher carbon content than that of Fig. 1, the curve A A' representing the beginning of ferrite formation should be moved to the right, whereas the curve CC' representing the beginning of cementite formation should be moved to the left. For hypoeutectoid plain carbon and low alloy steels, this prediction does not agree with existing data. Instead, as the carbon content is increased, the pearlite curve moves to the right along with the ferrite curve and always appears to join it tangen-tially. This behavior is demonstrated by the TTT-curves of a series of manganese steels" shown in Fig. 2. In this figure, TTT-curves for four alloys containing 0.20, 0.40, 0.60, and 1.20 pct C are superimposed. The curves are identified in the figure legend. The letters F, P, and C are used to indicate the start of ferrite, pearlite, and cementite formation, respectively. In these steels, it appears that the nucleation of ferrite and of pearlite are related processes. As a result of the foregoing evidence, it is proposed that the formation of pearlite be considered as follows: Either ferrite or cementite may nucleate from austenite, then grow until the remaining phase is nucleated at the interface between the growing phase and austenite. (The growth of the first phase to form is assumed to be accompanied by a composition change in the adjoining austenite.) S. mines at Bingham, Utah, but in November, 1912, he entered the operating department of the Chino Copper Co.'s concentrator at Hurley, New Mexico, where he stayed until July, 1913. During the latter half of 1913, he was employed as chemist in the laboratory of the El Paso smelter, at El Paso, Texas. In December, 1913, he became engineer and geologist with the Empire Zinc Co., at Socorro, New Mexico, which position he held at the time of his admission to the Institute in 1914, and until he entered the army in June, 1918. Before beginning the study of mining, Mr. Ringlund had completed a course in pharmacy, which accounts for his enlisting in the Medical Corps. Lieutenant George Roper, Jr. George Roper, Jr., a Junior Member of the Institute, was killed in an aeroplane accident near Shotwich, England, on Play 25, 1918. He was born at Steubenville, Ohio, in 1893, and at the time of his admi~sion to the Institute in 1916 was a student in mining and metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, Mass., from which he received the degree of S. B. in June, 1917. In August, 1917, he enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps, and after preliminary training on this side of the water, was sent to England. He was making the final cross-country flight of his course of training when the accident occurred.

The application of Muskat's differential equations for predicting the performance of a solution gas-drive reservoir to the Fullerton field indicates that a recovery may be expected of 14,030 bbl per acre under primary depletion, and 15,910 and I7,190 bbl per acre, respectively, under the two pressure-maintenance programs analyzed. In this analysis it is assumed that fluid properties are the same throughout the reservoir, that the core data used are typical of the Clear Fork limestone in the locality, and that injected gas is completely diffused through the pay zones. The economic study of the three recovery programs considered indicates that the one in which 60 pct of the produced gas is returned to the formation is the most profitable. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of pressure maintenance by gas injection on the ultimate recovery of oil from a solution gas-drive reservoir. This prediction of reservoir behavior is the result of calculations based on the equations presented by M. Muskat in the Journal of Applied Physics, March 1945. Reservoir The reservoir analyzed is the Fullerton field in Andrews County, West Texas. It is situated on a broad anticlinal structure with approximately 330 ft of closure, and extends approximately eight miles north and south and five miles east and west. The areal extent is taken as 16,642 acres. The producing horizon is the Lower Clear Fork limestone of Permian age, occurring at depths from 6650 to 7350 ft. It is divided into four zones. For the purposes of this study, the fluid characteristics in all zones are assumed to be the same. Therefore an equivalent zone is assumed of thickness equal to the sum of the thicknesses of the four zones, or an average of 216 ft. The reservoir contains 3,586,991 acre feet of producing limestone, with an initial volume of stock tank oil in place of 918,-403,100 bbl. The average connate water saturation is 24.0 pct. The permeability ranges from 6.7 md. to 12.6 md., and the porosity ranges from 7.7 pct to 11.4 pct, except for occasional cavernous streaks. Based on these values, the limestone may be considered intergranu1ar.l Production histories and material-balance studies have indicated that the driving mechanism is solution gas. Water levels have been established. Theory It is possible to express mathematically the change in residual oil saturation with pressure decline in a solution gas-drive reservoir as being equal to the change in the physical properties of the fluids present in the reservoir as this pressure decline occurs. THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. An exact statistical treatment of a one-dimensional model is used as a basis for evoluating the reliability of certain simplified expressions for the activity of the solute in interstitial solutions, including one obtained from the exact expression by setting the repulsive interaction equal to infinity. The latter approximation is found to be satisfactory at low and moderate concentration if the repulsive interaction is large, even though not infinite. A similar expression (identical if the co-odination number is two) is derived from the quasichemical expression of Lacher, and is recommended as the best available expression for the excess configurational entropy of interstitial solutions with excluded sites. Some reasonable models are discussed, and the nature of the saturated solutions is determined by inspection. Some of the models reduce to the one -dimensional case. An analysis is given of the excess partial entropy of hydrogen in V-H; Nb-H; and To-H solutions. MOST treatments of the statistical thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have followed the classic paper1 of Lacher in making the simplifying assumption that the configurational entropy of the solution is ideal. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are many interstitial solutions with very large so lute-solute repulsions, and for these the assumption of ideal entropy is not valid or useful. It is important to realize that with substitutional solutions large repulsions between the component atoms must lead to phase separation, whereas in interstitial solutions the free energy of the solution is not drastically increased by large solute-solute repulsions until intrinsic saturation is reached at the concentration where further solute would be forced to enter a site in which it would experience the repulsive effect of one or more solute atoms already present. In the limiting case of an infinitely large repulsive interaction, the excess free energy would be attributable entirely to excess entropy, the enthalpy of mixing being zero. AS will be shown below, even if the repulsions are less than infinite, a treatment based on an assumption of infinite repulsions may be very satisfactory up to moderately high concentrations of the interstitial component. Often in solutions where large repulsive interactions exist, there are also small interactions — often attractive—between solute atoms in configurations other than that corresponding to the large repulsion. In such cases the excess free energy will consist of an excess entropy term attributable to the large repulsive interactions, and an enthalpy term corresponding to the other small interactions. Nomenclature to differentiate succinctly between important cases would be a convenience. In this paper the nomenclature shown in Table I will be used. In Table I, and in the preceeding discussion, excess quantities are defined in terms of standard states which are pure solid solvent and pure (possibly hypothetical) solid saturated phase of the structure in question. In practice, it is more convenient to choose the interstitial element as a component, and its conventional standard state. This will add a composition-independent term to the excess entropy and the enthalpy. The earliest paper known to the present author which treats the thermodynamics of athermal interstitial solutions was given by schei12 in 1951, but the statistical derivations in that paper are open to criticism. Speiser and Spretnak were the first to give a correct statistical treatment,3 limited, however, to concentrations sufficiently low that the number of empty sites excluded from occupancy by more than one filled site is negligible. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the statistical treatment to more concentrated solutions, and to examine the magnitude of the errors introduced by assuming that the repulsive interactions are infinite when in fact they must be finite. THE QUASICHEMICAL APPROXIMATION Fortunately, a standard method already exists for taking into account the effect of large interactions upon the entropy of mixing. This is the quasi-chemical method, in which the probability of existence of a given pair of solute atoms in a certain proximate configuration is assumed to be proportional to exp(-w/kT), where w is the energy increase of the solution when the two atoms are moved from isolated locations in the solution to the configuration in question. A quasichemical treatment of interstitial solutions was given in 1937 in a widely neglected paper by Lacher.4 The result comes out

THE growth of domestic requirements for motor fuel has been phe-nomenal, rising year after year in a fashion almost unique among com-modities, resisting depressions and forging rapidly ahead in times of prosperity. Consumption advanced from 226 millions of barrels in 1925 to 522 millions of barrels in 1938; or 130 per cent. The economic influ-ences generating and sustaining this demand are of vital concern to the petroleum industry. The general factors affecting utilization of motor fuel are well known but it is the purpose of this paper to employ the recently developed technique of economic dynamics to describe them mathematically. Such problems in economic analysis are complicated by the freedom of all the variables to fluctuate, their mutual interdependence, changing incidence upon one another, and the nonquantitative character of some of them. Economic quantities and relationships, unlike those of the physical world, are continuously changing and this dynamic characteristic is both a distinguishing and confusing feature in economic research. The com-plexities of the problems require application of the analytical devices of mathematical statistics to uncover the probable relationships between factors. The procedure employed is to formulate a logical relationship linking the dependent to the independent variables, and then simul-taneously, rather than sequentially, determine their separate effects by multiple correlation. This transformation of common knowledge to quantitative terms makes it possible to measure the probable effects of changing conditions upon requirements, assisting in the sound interpreta-tion of economic policies. The utility of the results of such dynamic analysis is in sharp contrast to the sterility of the trends and other simple empiricisms of descriptive statistics. It is not intended in this study to throw light on the reasons why any motor fuel at all is consumed; but to discover relationships explaining why more was consumed at one time than at another. A. D. Le Claire and R. S. Barnes (Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., England)-—This much awaited paper admirably confirms that the Kirkendall effect is a true diffusion phenomenon and likely to be found in all diffusing systems. The most likely explanation put forward so far to account for the shift of interface is that the two components of the system, diffusing in opposite directions, do so with unequal rates so that there is a net loss of material from that half of the diffusion zone rich in the more rapidly diffusing component. This loss is accompanied, and at least partly compensated for, by a closing up or decrease in volume of this latter half of the diffusion zone and an expansion of the other half so as to tend to keep constant the overall volume per atom. This is manifest as a movement of the original interface. If this is a true picture of what is taking place then there are at least two important matters requiring further study."1—The quantitative relating of the observed shift with the independently measured separate diffusion coefficients of the two diffusing species."2—A detailed study of the mechanism and characteristics of the closing up process."We would like first to make a few remarks pertinent to these topics. In connection with the first of these, it is a pity that more and detailed measurements were not made on the Au-Ag system, the only one for which the separate diffusion coefficients of the two species have been measured.'" One of us (A. D. Le C.) has calculated from Johnson's results the shift to have been expected in samples D.2 and D.3. Darken4 showed that the velocity v with which the markers move is related to the separate diffusion coefficients Dau, Dag, by the eauation:"dN"v = (Dag — Dau "dx"dN"where .is the concentration gradient at the mark-ax"ers. A number of observations have now been reported where the steady-state creep rate is apparently linearly dependent on the applied stress at high temperature and low stresses. This results in a creep rate greater than that predicted by extrapolation of high-stress data and has obvious practical implications. However, some of these observations are open to question. For example, the analysis by Harris and Partridge17 of the data of Greenfield et a1.18 was dependent on strain rates which, according to the original authors, were too low to be measured. Dr. Bernstein appears to have demonstrated a linear stress dependence at low stresses in two zirconium alloys. There are, however, a number of discrepancies in his treatment of the data and the subsequent theoretical analysis which require clarification. 1) It is incorrectly stated that steady-state conditions are revealed by a slope of unity on a plot of log i vs log (time). This objection is trivial if the author meant to say a slope of zero, although it is unclear how subsequent extrapolation was made to determine the steady-state creep rates at low stresses for the zircaloy-2. If the plot used was actually log c vs log (time), it is unlikely that a slope of unity would represent a constant creep rate. A plot of log (c - co) vs log (time), where c0 is the extrapolated intercept sf the steady-state creep rate on the strain axis, would have a slope of unity during steady-state creep. However, eo cannot be determined unless is is already known. 2) The author chooses to interpret his results based on the equation: where A, and B, are structure-sensitive parameters, Ql and Q, are the activation energies for the particular creep process, and n describes the sensitivity of the creep rate on stress. The first term represents a slip creep process and the second a diffusion creep process. However, it is stated later that "two distinct processes acting in parallel are involved". Eq. [I] surely represents two processes in series since each reacts to the total applied stress and t, is the sum of the individual creep rates. If the processes are acting in parallel, then the effective stress in each would be less than the applied stress. The component stresses would be given by sl + s2 = a but it is not clear how the magnitude of either, or the corresponding stress exponent, could be determined.

All strata not yielding oil or gas in commereial quantities or a corresponding amount of water may be called dry in a wide sense. In petroleum geology, however, we may exclude all sands of too low or fine porosity to yield gaseous or fluid contents to the hole drilled in the sand before any original pressure that its contents may be under is disturbed. Most rocks are of this class and they are not reservoirs in our definition; their "dryness" is wholly a matter of course. What are the contents of the pores or what is the exact porosity of such rocks is of almost no concern to us, for economically they are "dry." What does interest us is the content of a rock having sufficient porosity and the pores of sufficient size to yield oil or gas in commercial quantities, if they were present under original pressure. Dryness of these reservoirs is a matter of supreme practical importance. Three views current as to such dryness seem, to me, to apply in a few cases only. It is the purpose of this paper to give reasons for this position and for believing that, in ordinary sedimentary rocks, there is only rarely a reservoir of competent porosity and undisturbed pressure that is dry in the sense of not yielding water, oil, or gas when first penetrated. 1. Gardnerl writes of some Kentucky sands, "There has never been present any salt water or other water in the sand." Absence of water cannot demonstrate this position. It is necessary to show that the rocks were not laid down in water, but in air, and that they became so enclosed, while still above the water-table of the ground water, that water has not been able to enter since. Most of these sands, and certainly the productive limestones, were deposited in water; and such sands as have been commercially productive show no reason for believing that the overlying shale or limestone was not laid down progressively from one direction and in water that would have flooded it. NO adequate explanation has been offered for this hypothesis, which is so inherently improbable. 2, Reeves2 urges that "sands originally water filled may have been drained of their water and not filled when later covered." The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus became citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil.

With the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that the notch sensitivity of magnesium alloy extrusions be further investigated and the influence of various factors upon notch sensitivity be noted. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. The work discussed herein was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, reported in Dec. 1943~; it has been released for publica-tion by the O.S.R.D. Scope of the Investigation The notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions was determined under axial tension, and also under several conditions of nonaxial tension. Hardness, grain size and other metallographic features were observed; stress-strain data were obtained, and the chemical compositions of the alloys were determined, in order to correlate these quantities with thc notch sensitivity. Notch sensitivity under axial tensile load was determined for a few specimens which had been cold worked to various degrees by tensile prestraining. Magnesium alloy extrusions studied included Dowmetal 0, X, J, and A(. For comparison, extrusions of aluminum alloy 24s-T, cast bars of aluminum alloy 122-T2, and cast bars of magnesium alloy C were also tested. The specified chemical composition of these alloys is given in Table I. All bars tested were within specification limits of composition. Investigation of thc tensile notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions, under conditions of axial and eccentric load, showed little or no correlation with stress-strain or other conventional data. Since the many uncontrolled variables present might mask significant relationships, one alloy was selected for intensive study. Magnesium 0 alloy extrusions were subjected to experimental heat treatments, and the ,Changing hardness, tensile strength, microstructure, and notch sensitivity observed. Experimental Techniques and Procedures Tensile Testing Bars used for axial loading were machined with % in.- and with 34-in. minimum diam1 and included specimens with 60" V notches (Fig I and 2). Each V-notched specimen was roughed out carefully and then finished with a honed tool. IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. The secondary re crystallization behavior of two vacuum-melted, nominally 3 pct Si-Fe alloys has been studied, one alloy being produced from pure electrolytic iron and semiconductor-grade silicon and the other from commercial-purity hot band. The vacuum-melted and vacuum-remelted alloys were found to develop {110}(hhl) and {lll)(hkl), respectively, on annealing in high vacuum and {100}(0kl) and {11l}(hkl), respectively on annealing in pure hydrogen of dew point, < — 60°C. H2S doping of the hydrogen or annealing in commercial argon was found to effect a reversal for the vacuum-remelted alloy from (111) to (100) secondary recrys-tallization, while prolonged vacuum annealing at 2 x 10-6 Tow resulted in a tertiary re crystallization from (111} to (110). The growth selection of the {lll}(hkl) component was found to be governed predominantly by the {111}/planar misorientation, the maximum deviation of the resulting secondaries being 5 deg. It is considered that the driving force for {111}(hkl) secondary recrystallization arises from the preferential lowering of ?111, possibly by phosphorus or nitrogen diffusion, just as oxygen and sulfur under certain conditions have been found to preferentially lower ?100. When heavily cold-rolled metals are annealed at high temperatures, primary recrystallization usually occurs rapidly and may be followed by considerable grain growth. However, in the presence of a fine dispersion of inclusions1"3 or with a strong matrix preferred orientation4&apos;&apos; the matrix may be stabilized and a secondary recrystallization may then be effected. Also, in vacuum-melted Si-Fe it has been shown possible to develop {100}(001) and {110}(001)6 surface energy driven secondary recrystallization textures. Further, it has been found that, on annealing very pure metals, grain growth normally ceases when a grain size approximately twice the strip thickness is acquired, due to the formation of V-shaped thermal grooves which result in an equilibrium being set up between surface and grain boundary stresses. If, however, a surface energy difference ??s, exists between adjacent grains (of the order of a few percent of the grain boundary energy ?b), then according to Mullins8 a secondary recrystallization may be effected, since the grains having lowest ?s would grow at the expense of their higher-energy neighbors. For clean bee metal surfaces ?110 should be lowest; however, for 3 pct Fe-Si (100) secondary structures have frequently been developed and have been attributed by Walter and Dunn9 to an alteration of the relative surface energies due to the preferential chemisorption of oxygen on (100) planes. Kohler,10 however, indicated that this reversal may be achieved by employing minute quantities of highly polar compounds in the annealing atmosphere, i.e., sulfur compounds, in par- ticular H2S being beneficial in (100) growth. This work has been verified by Kramer" using {100)/{110} bicrystals, while Mager12 demonstrated the importance of sulfur diffusion within the strip. Detert13 has intimated that carbon may be responsible for the preferential lowering of ?110 although no direct evidence has appeared yet to support this supposition. It must , be appreciated that the above-mentioned examples of surface energy driven secondary recrystallization were obtained with very pure vacuum-melted materials with oxygen contents (which is now known to be a critical factor") less than 35 ppm. During the course of a textural study on Si-Fe it has been found that under certain conditions (111) secondary recrystallization can be obtained by what is believed to be a surface energy growth selection mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to briefly describe this result and to try and postulate the possible causes. EXPERIMENTAL Two vacuum-induction-melted, nominally 3 pct Si-Fe alloys were produced, one from pure electrolytic iron and semiconductor-grade silicon designated A and the other from commercial-purity hot band, designated B.

The SO-called gas-tube method as developed by Hare, Peterson and Soler for determining the type and content of gases in molten steel is particularly adapted for determining the hydrogen content in molten steel. The development of this method has been quite completely discussed in a paper published by these co-workers in 1937.&apos; The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to familiarize with this method those who arc not well acquainted with it. The principle of the gas-tube method is as fol1ows: One end of an evacuated gas tube is sealed with a very thin copper disk. when this end of the tube is immersed in a test spoonful of molten steel, the copper disk melts almost immediately, allowing a portion of the steel to be drawn up into the evacuated space. Any dissolved gases, and those produced by reactions between the components of the steel during freezing, are liberated into the unfilled portion of the sampling tube. A blob of steel that forms on the immersed end of the tube after the sample is drawn up seals up the end, making it airtight again. The evolved gases are subsequently drawn out of the gas tube through a suitable valve and analyzed by means of an Orsat apparatus. The volume of the sampling tube is sufficiently large so that a pressure considerably below atmospheric is produced after the gas evolution. The low pressure is necessary to effect a nearly complete removal of gases from the steel. Construction oF Sampling Tube The sampling gas-tube apparatus is illustrated in Fig. I. Seamless S.A.E. tubing used for section A is first cut into 7-ft. lengths. Through cxperiencc it was found necessary to use two sizes of tubing for this part, "is-in. and 3/4-in., respectively. The smaller tubing is generally used on the hotter or lower carbon steels. If the inside wall of the tube A is coated with grease or oil, it should be burned out before being machined as follows: One end is machined on the inside diameter to a depth of 34 in., so as to form a seat for a 7/8-in copper disk, which is stamped out from 0.005 to 0.007-in. thick copper sheet. The other end is machined on the outside diameter to a diameter of 1 5/16 in., to take a small reservoir or trap member I?. About 4 in. below the same end, a 1/2-in. hole is drilled to receive the 1/2-in. copper tubing leading to the large reservoir C. The inside of tube A is then thoroughly cleaned with a round wire brush, such as is generally used to clean out shotgun barrels. It is very important that the surface be absolutely free of rust or any nonmetallic coating. Next, the thin copper disk is soldered in place with low-melting silver solder.

INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes porphyry copper deposits within the State of Alaska. Prospecting for porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska germinated during the 1940&apos;s, grew slowly during the &apos;50&apos;s, boomed during the &apos;60&apos;s, and matured in the &apos;70&apos;s. Although large expenditures have been made in the search for porphyry-type deposits, most accrued data lies dormant in company files. However, an adequate base exists in the literature for a general synthesis of areas that contain porphyry prospects. To simplify the summary, porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clark (1972) are omitted. Description of deposits in their geologic setting permits some correlations between deposit characteristics and crustal environment. These correlations allow speculation about the genesis of the deposits. The summary also attempts to group deposits on the basis of general mineralogic characteristics because diorite model deposits are separated from quartz phenocryst-bearing hosts. Data presented in this chapter summarize observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas and deposits as noted in the bibliography, and comments by various government geologists. E. M. MacKevett, Jr., D. H. Richter, and H. C. Berg of the US Geological Survey have been particularly helpful. Because few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits exist for this area, much of the data presented is new to the literature. Details of structure, isotopic geochemistry, and petro- genesis for individual deposits are largely lacking and even the general geology of some belts is not well understood. Details on petrography of Alaskan porphyry copper occurrences are inadequate for construction of ternary diagrams (e.g., Figs. 36a, b, pp. 103, 104, for the northern Cordilleran orogen). Petrographic descriptions summarized in the text are largely from published descriptions whose sources are cited. Porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska include deposits with pervasive pyrite that contain disseminated copper (but not necessarily coproduct molybdenum). Available data preclude differentiating the deposits by size. No Alaskan porphyry copper deposit is now in production but this is believed to be, in part, a function of economics. In some cases available geologic information is in- adequate for classifying deposits. Some de- posits included with porphyry copper may, with further exploration, be demonstrated to be some other genetic type. Alaska has three distinct porphyry copper provinces: the Hogatza plutonic belt, the Continental Margin belt, and the Interior belt. Each belt contains deposits with characteristic geologic features distinct from those of other belts. Fig. 24 shows the continental margin belt to extend inland from
