THE controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modem copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range 0 to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously.1-2-3 Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,1, 2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of 3/8-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 850°C. from a surface scale. Test wires were drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at o.3125, 0.257, o.204 and o.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 95 per cent t0 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting were hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 600°C. and cold-drawn 95 per cent to 0.081inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 5/16-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700° to 800°C., as will be shown later. Subsequently, the anneals for all oxygen-free alloys were conducted in hydrogen to prevent oxidation, and purified nitrogen was employed only for oxygen-bearing samples. All conductivity anneals were of one hour duration followed by a rapid quench in 10 per cent H2SO4. STOPING methods in which shoveling plays an important part are gradually being replaced by other and cheaper methods. But there will always be considerable shoveling done underground in stopes as well as in drifts, tunnels, urinzes, and shafts. At the mines of the PhelpsDodge Corporation at Tyrone, N. M., the cost of shoveling in all stopes in 1917 amounted to 24c. per T. In the top-slice stopes for the same period, it cost 27 c. per T. or 16 per cent, of the total cost of these stopes. The tonnage for shovelers from all stoping was 9.3 T. per man, and for topslicing 8.2 T. per man. These stopes were not unduly hot, and there was not more than the usual amount of timber to interfere with the work of the men. The tonnages obtained per shoveler were considered low; first, because of a poor grade of Mexican labor, many of the men having come in from railroad grading camps; and second, because of a poor spacing of raises, especially in the top-slice stopes, where, in general, they were spaced 25 ft. by 66 ft. (7.6 by 20.1 m.) centers. The average wage per laborer shift was $2.67 during the year. It was thought, however, that even under these conditions the men were not producing the tonnage that they should, so, with the consent of the management, the writer undertook to determine how the general efficiency of the underground shoveling could be improved. No predetermined plan for conducting these experiments was arranged because we had no definite ideas as to the scope of the work or the number of elements into which the investigation would resolve itself, before all of its phases could be determined. We were sure, however, that any work that would thoroughly cover the ground would have to be in the nature of a systematic time study, combined with a course of instruction in correct shoveling methods and adequate and intelligent supervision of the work. Two or three companies in the Southwest have done some work to determine the proper shovel to be used undcrground, but so far as is known the work has been limited to equipping certain parts of their mines with a particular type and size of shovel and thereafter watching the cost and efficiency records. In each case it seems to have been the shovel that held the 21-lb. (9.5-kg.) load that gave the bcst results. Excepting personal communications from these companies, the only data available on scientific shoveling are contained in F. W. Taylor's book, "The Principles of Scientific Management," and D. J. Haucr's article, in The Contractor for March 29, 1918, "A Hundred Hints for Shovelers." This paper discusses and draws conclusions from several thousand time-study readings, taken both on the surface and in the mines for nearly a year. A sufficient number of readings were taken on each factor in the problem for the plotting of curves of the performances and to obtain accurate indices of the work to be expected from this class of labor. The work is not as complete in all of its details as we would like to havc it, because we were forced to stop the work temporarily, owing to the numbcr of men going into the National service and our inability to get others who could make time studies. The results obtained so far, however, have been of such a startling nature that we have decided to submit them at this time, subject to future modification. It is hoped, also, that a free discussion of this paper will lead to a disclosure of any errors that may have becn embodied and offer some valuable suggestions for the conduct of future work.

HUBERT INGERSOLL ELLIS Hubert Ingersoll Ellis, who met accidental death on Jan. 6, 1919, in eastern Washington, had already advanced far in the profession of mining engineering and gave promise of a brilliant future. He was born on the Washington coast in June, 1889, and had his preparatory schooling at Menlo, Wash. In 1905; he entered the College of Mines of the University of Washington, and at once made a high record of scholarship. After completing 3 years of his technical course, he went to the interior of Alaska, where he spent 4 years in mining. During this time he was field correspondent for technical-magazines and wrote several important articles. In 1915, Ellis completed his senior year in the College of Mines; his graduation thesis was a comprehensive paper on mining methods at Fairbanks, Alaska, which was published as a series of articles in the Engineering and Mining Journal. On July 14, 1915, he entered the employ of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co., Kellogg, Ida., as an underground miner, and was soon promoted to the position of operative on experimental metallurgy and later chemist in the same work. Later, he did exhaustive work on flotation with particular attention to the use of various addition agents. For the past 212 years, his work was largely in the field, examining mining prospects and directing work of investigation, during which time, while located at Sumter Valley, Ore., in 1916, he was elected to membership in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. During the same year, he was married to Miss Grace Wells, of Arkadelphia, Ark., and besides his widow leaves a young son. In Hubert I. Ellis, there was found the rare combination of executive, administrative, and business ability, together with a temperament exceptionally well adapted and trained for research work and for the careful and exhaustive examination of engineering problems, both practical, and academic. These qualities were in addition to a splendid physique and a personality that made him highly successful in the handling of sub-ordinates and in his contact with his associates and the public.

D. W. Fuerstenau (Associate Professor of Metallurgy, Dept. of Mineral Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.) In his excellent paper, Dr. Schuhmann has proposed a mechanism for conlrninution which can be utilized to explain a number of phenomena which have been observed in the size reduction of solids. The difference between the product obtained from a ball mill and from a rod mill can readily be explained by Dr. Schuhmann's hypothesis. Consider that the size distribution of the product from each comminution event is given by y; - 100 (x/ki) (1) where Yi is the cumulative percent finer than size x, ki is the size modulus, and is the distribution modulus for the single comminution event. The total product from a cornminution operation will be the summation of the products from all of the individual cornrninution events. If the size moduli from the various comminution events range from kl to kn , the size distribution of the total product will be a straight line on a log-log plot only to a particle size equal to k ,. 'Thus, the total product from a comminution operation will be a straight line on a log-log plot strictly up to a particle size equal to kl and above that size the line will curve so that y will equal 100 for the coarsest particle or k, (see Fig. 1). The actual shape of the size of distribution curve will depend upon the relative number of conmninution events of different kinds. In the case of ball milling, the ratio kn/kl may be pite large and there will be considerable deviation at the coarse sizes in a Schuhmann plot. kIowever, the grinding action in a rod mill is such that fine particles are protected from the rods by the coarse particles. Consequently, kn/kl will be quite small and the product from a rod mill will give a straight line Schuhmann plot almost to y equal 100%. In his paper, Dr. Schuhmann also has presented a very straightforward definition of grindability derived from the basic energy equation E = Ak-a (5) where E is the energy required to comminute a material to a size modulus of k and A is a constant. According to Dr. Schuhmann, the grindability of a material is the volume of material comminuted finer than unit size per unit of energy expended, this being 1/A. For comparison of grindabilities at any size two numbers are required, both = and 1/A, and anyone tabulating grindabilities should give both of these numbers. Concerning the experimental determination of grindabilities, if the material being comminuted possesses distinct cleavage, the energy re quired for comminution is given by E = Ak-(a-y) (6) where y is small number less than = . Because of cleavage, less energy will be required for comminution. To be certain that cleavage does not affect the gindability of the material being tested, it is suggested that the method used by Dr. Charles for determining grindability be used to ascertain if the deviation exponent y is zero or finite. This paper deals with the application of froth flotation techniques to the beneficiation of kaolin clay and phosphate slimes, two very fine particle sized materials. The kaolin problem involves the removal of a small amount of a contaminating mineral (anatase), while the phosphate problem involves the concentration and recovery of a much larger percentage of apatite. Due to these differences, and also different response to flotation, the two problems are discussed in separate parts of the article. An idea of what is meant by "Ultrafine Minerals Or Slimes" as used in the title can be had by an examination of Fig. 1. Particle size distributions are presented for a crude kaolin clay, a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The crude kaolin as mined was blunged with water, degritted through a 325-mesh Tyler screen, and dispersed with sodium silicate. The dispersed crude was then centrifuged in the laboratory into the coarse and fine fractions shown in the figure. The distribution curves were obtained by the well known sedimentation technique of Casa-grande1 using a long arm centrifuge to obtain equiva- lent spherical diameters down to 0.2 p on the finer fraction. Fig. 1 shows the coarse fraction kaolin to be 50% finer than 3 p, while the crude kaolin is 509 f'lner than 1.4 p, and the fine fraction 50% finer than 0.46~. For comparison 53 p on the horizontal scale would represent Stokesian diameters which would just pass a 325-mesh Tyler screen, taking into consideration the Andreasen sieve correction factor of 1.22 times the screen opening. 2 Another helpful comparison is the surface areas, which in square meters per gram, are 0.044 for 53 p particles, 0.77 for 3p, 1.65 for 1.4 p and 5.0 for 0.46 p particles. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph of a similar fine fraction kaolin showing the hexagonal plate-like particle shapes.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25 to 30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large-scale mapping which allowed subsurface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability, and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the modified Fellenius slip circle, simplified Bishop slip circle, and analysis for translational failure were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and seismic acceleration probability were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed were in a stable condition. The coal seam, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these embankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dam slurry impoundments generally lack the site selection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

Aluminum phosphide was synthesized and grown in solution of excess aluminum using a modified two-temperature technique. An inversion in the density difference between ALP and molten aluminum takes place at about 1100°. Dispersed nuclei can act as sources for further crystal growth in a manner resembling ripening. Advantage was taken of this phenomenon by introducing a stirring motion into the molten liquid. This was done with a split-phase 10-kH2 rotating magnetic field produced by four horizontal coils placed symmetrically about the furnace at the level of the molten metal. The method also prevents the formation of a surface film which would impede the reaction. By this technique vastly improved yields were obtained and flat crystals 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm were grown at lower temperatures and at greater rates than heretofore. THE family of III-V intermetallic compounds has received much attention since the prediction of their semiconducting properties in the early 1950s. Of the family, A1P has perhaps the highest band gap of those compounds normally possessing the zinc-blende structure. But it has been least studied because it is difficult to handle and grow. The handling difficulties have been dealt with elsewhere and it is sufficient to say here that, by various techniques, many of the difficulties can be overcome.' The difficulties encountered in crystal growth can be related to the refractory nature of A1P and in turn to its high band gap. Because of the anticipated high melting point of the material and the accompanying high phosphorus vapor pressure, the reported work on synthesis and growth was done by epitaxial synthesis-growth via chlorine2 and iodine3 transport and from solution of excess aluminum by the two-temperature technique.4'5 The transport-grown crystals take on the dimensions of the substrate but do not grow easily in thickness. In the usual two-temperature technique as applied on the synthesis of Alp, the temperature of the molten aluminum is kept at 1000° to 1250°C while the phosphorus is maintained at 1 to 20 atm. A thin film of aluminum phosphide and oxide form immediately, impeding the reaction and affecting the yield. Attempts to grow the Alp from such solutions by the methods used to grow Gap and InP from excess gallium and indium have not been successful. The microplastic response of a series ofas-quenched Fe-Ni-C martensites has been measured at 77°K. At strains less than JO'3 the flow stress is governed primarily by the transformation-induced dislocation structure of the martensite. Only at strains in excess of 10-3 is the influence of carbon manifested in the flow stress. At these macroscopic strains, typically 10-2, the solid-solution hardening is proportional to (wt pct C)1/3, and, in an alloy containing 0.39 wt pct C, amounts to 50 pct of the flow stress. THE technological significance of high-strength ferrous martensite has stimulated many investigations of its structure and properties. Although our knowledge of the characteristics of martensite has increased immensely, especially with the advent of high-resolution techniques, an understanding of the basic strengthening mechanism still remains elusive. The purpose of the present paper is to consider certain aspects of micro-plastic behavior of Fe-Ni-C martensite which we feel can help to resolve this important problem. Such alloys are particularly suitable for experimental investigation because their compositions can be adjusted to reduce the M, to a temperature low enough essentially to eliminate the diffusion of carbon in the freshly formed martensite.1 The mechanical properties in this condition are of interest inasmuch as they reflect a state that is free of the important but complicating influence of precipitation processes. In this virgin martensite the carbon is distributed as it was inherited from the parent austenite; i.e., it is present interstitially, and gives rise to tetragonality through strain-induced ordering.' In order to determine the source of strength of such alloys, Winchell and Cohen1 investigated the low-temperature macroscopic stress-strain behavior of a series of virgin martensites of increasing carbon content but of common M, temperature (-35°C). They found that the flow stress increased rapidly with carbon content up to 0.4 wt pct; beyond this point the flow stress increased at a much slower rate. It was concluded that martensite is inherently strong. To account quantitatively for the strength of virgin or as- quenched martensite in terms of the role of carbon, Winchell and cohen3 suggested that the carbon atoms, trapped in their original positions by the diffusionless martensite transformation, interfere with dislocation motion according to a model akin to that of Mott and Nabarro. 4 In this treatment, individual carbon atoms are considered to constitute centers of elastic strain and thereby generate an average stress resisting the motion of dislocations throughout the lattice. The additional stress necessary to move dislocations, over and above that necessary for motion in a carbon-free martensite, is given by where L is an effective length of dislocation capable of motion. L was assumed to be limited to the spacing between the twins that are an essential structural element of Fe-Ni-C martensites. They assumtd the spacing to be invariant and of the order of 100A. However, recent work5 has shown that L is variable and can be in excess of 1000Å, so that the assignment of an appropriate value of L is not straightforward. In contrast to the above conclusion that there is an intrinsically high resistance to plastic flow, it has been suggested by Polakowski6 that freshly quenched martensite is in fact "soft" in the sense that dislocations are initially free to move upon application of stress. The high indentation hardness and macroscopic yield stress of ferrous martensites are then a consequence of rapid strain hardening that depends upon carbon in solution. Consistent with this point of view are the results of Beau lieu and Dubé who measured the rate of recovery of internal friction as a function of aging (tempering) temperature in a freshly quenched steel containing 0.90 wt pct C, 0.37 wt pct Mn, 0.1 wt pct Cr, and 0.07 wt pct Ni. The kinetics were clearly consistent with the idea that many dislocations are unpinned in the as-quenched state and that during aging they become progressively pinned by carbon at a rate controlled by carbon diffusion in the body-centered martensite lattice. In order to provide a basis upon which to distinguish between the "hard" and "soft" interpretations indicated above, we have made studies of the initial stages of plastic deformation in Fe-Ni-C martensites similar to those'used by Winchell and Cohen. Thickeners are simply large tanks, usually circular in shape, which are designed to allow settling of solids and to operate with continuous overflow of clear water and underflow of thick pulp. The dimensions of the thickener are usually such that dewatering of very fine pulps may be accomplished while still overflowing clear water. Some thickeners such as the Center, Hardinge and Hydrotator types combine thickening with filtering2 while others such as the Dorr type are pure thickeners. l .2 , 3 A schematic diagram of the traction type Dorr thickener is shown in [Fig 1]. This type is appropriate for tanks over 15 m (50 ft) in diameter. This tank employs a rotating raking mechanism which moves the settled material toward the central discharge. For this and other thickeners, it is common to have a shallow conical tank bottom in order to conform to the geometry of the raking mechanism, and it is often desirable to elevate the tank for ease of access to the product. When the tank does not rest on the ground, the forces resisted by the cone are large, and thick plates must be employed. The fabrication of these tanks requires temporary supports in order to erect the cone. A flat-bottomed tank could also be used because the settled material would soon form a hardened conical surface. However, because of the presence of large bending forces, even larger plate thicknesses are required than for the conical bottom. Significant cost savings often can be realized by the use of a scalloped-bottomed tank such as the one partially shown in [Fig. 2]. The particular scalloped bottom discussed in this paper employs radial beams forming the outline of the cone-shaped bottom. These beams are supported directly by columns. Cone segments are hung between adjacent beams. The exact geometry of these segments depends upon the cone angle and radius, the number of radial beams, and their inclination. The geometry is chosen to satisfy certain clearance restraints and to utilize the material as efficiently as possible. The resulting thickness of these segments is significantly less than that of the equivalent plate for the tank with a conical bottom. This result, along with the simpler fabrication procedures required, accounts for the cost savings associated with this design. The raking mechanism employed may be the same as for the conventional conical bottom since the settled material soon forms a conical surface. Determination of the internal force mechanism for the scalloped bottom leads to designs that utilized material efficiently and thus maximize the cost savings. The complicated geometry of these bottoms along with the difficulty in analyzing the structure are factors which may have limited the use of scalloped-bottomed tanks to date. When such tanks have been built, the uncertainties associated with the internal forces have led to designs that are somewhat inefficient. In this paper, equations relating the geometric parameters are presented along with simplified closed-form solutions for the internal forces in the cone segments, from which the loads applied to the beams and the loads carried to the cylindrical tank shell can be deduced. During the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Brownsville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to thechairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corporation, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which arc presented in this paper. Acknowledgments are due to Mr. Morse for his full cooperation in this work and to Mr. G. S. Rice and Mr. J. W. Paul, both of the U. S. The Ruth orebody, so far developed, is roughly oval in plan, major and minor axes about 1600 ft. (457 m.) and 1200 ft. (365 m.) respectively, average thickness about 120 ft. (36 m.), and with a general dip of about 15" to the northwest. According to the generally accepted theory, the ore is a secondary enrichment of the porphyry due to leaching in situ by meteoric waters. Copper occurs as chalcocite, chalcocite coating pyrite, and a little chalcopyrite. The leached zone, or capping, covering the ore varies in thickness from 110 to 540 ft. (33 to 164 m.), average about 410 ft. (124 m.). The ore is blue gray in color, and the capping, light yellow to brown. Ore was first discovered in quantity in the workings from the Ruth shaft, now caved. Further development work was done by churn drills, and the outline of the orebody, as stated above, determined in this manner. Drilling is still being carried on. The porphyry area is entirely surrounded by sedimentaries, limestones, and shales; and, in so far as the underground workings have shown, the porphyry itself, the sedimentaries' near the contact, and the country underlying the ore (igneous or sedimentary) is very soft, heavy, and in places swelling ground. All openings have to be carefully and stoutly timbered, and, after once driven, they have to be constantly eased off and repaired. The mine Is at present served by two shafts, the Star Pointer, the main working shaft, a vertical, and the Ingersoll, an incline used for waste and material. The two shafts are about 2600 ft. (792 m.) apart, connected on the 500 level; a connection is now being driven on the 600 level. (Dec., 1917. This connection is now completed.) The 300 level, which is finished, and the 400 level which is nearly completed, are accessible only from the Ingersoll and connections with the 500 level. The 300 level was developed for and mined by the shrinkage stope system, similar to that used successfully in the Ray Consolidated property.

QUALITATIVELY, galena (native lead sulfide) reacts with aqueous solutions of the xanthates,1 and has its surface sufficiently altered so that there is a tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral crystals where there was no such effect before the treatment. This property is utilized in froth flotation operations where the mineral sulfide particles are raised into the froth and the gangue whose surface is not altered remains behind. The results of a study of this reaction were reported" recently and certain tentative suggestions about the interaction of galena and the alkali xanthates were offered. In this paper, there is set down the results of a detailed quantitative investigation of the ions involved in this inter-action with a view to finding out more about the condition existing imme-diately at the surface of a crystal like a heavy metal sulfide after treatment with an organic reagent. Past experimental experience showed that finely ground galena shaken with aqueous potassium xanthate abstracts xanthate ion and at the same time sulfate ion, reducing ions of the type (SmOn)= where the ratio of m to n is less than 4:1 (as in sulfate), sometimes hydroxyl ion are thrown into solution.,

THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. ROBERT PEELE, New York, N. Y. (written discussion *).-This excellent paper is one of a number of recent detailed descriptions of the, methods and plant in use at prominent mines of the country. The publication of such papers cannot be too highly praised. In the past, the interchange of inside information has often been hampered by the disinclination of some mining companies to permit publication of details of their work. These companies apparently have not realized fully that free discussion is of mutual benefit; that members of mine staffs are aided in. keeping up to date, in improving old methods and devising new ones to meet changes in conditions, and, by a wholesome feeling of rivalry, are stimulated to introduce economies and do better work. In writing this paper, Messrs. Haight and Tillson have packed a large amount of information into a relatively small space, and the numerous illustrations, chiefly reductions of working drawings, are valuable. The authors are also to be commended for their highly detailed Table of Contents, which adds to the usefulness of the, subject matter. The method of mining at Franklin does not fall readily into any of the accepted classifications. It is a combination of shrinkage stoping and mining of the pillars by a modified top-slicing method. Attention may be called to the fact that, in the wider parts of the orebody, the stopes, 17 to 18 ft. (5.2 to 5.5 m.) wide are transverse; in the narrower parts, they are longitudinal, that is, in the direction of the' strike. This varia-tion is made necessary by the shape and character of the deposit, and distinguishes practice at Franklin from that in some of the western mines. The direction of the stops is changed from transverse to longitudinal when the orebody narrows sufficiently to make the length of a transverse stope approximately equal to its width. Some of the longitudinal stopes exceed 120 ft. (36 m.) in length, and when the hanging wall is bad, requiring prompt filling, three operations' proceed simul-taneously in the same stope, viz., ore is broken at one end, while drawing down goes on in the middle, and filling at the other end. Each transverse stope or chamber is begun by a crosscut from foot to hanging wall, which is afterward enlarged to the stone width and to a height of 12 or 15 ft. (3.7 or 4.6 m.). This preliminary work is done only once for each stope, because the stope is carried up far enough to continue stoping

At the recent SME Fall Meeting in Salt Lake City, Robert M. Jimeson, Physical Science Administrator of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cited the research programs underway in the Bureau's Division of Coal Research, and outlined their current status. These research programs have been selected by the Division because of their relative value and high probability of success in contributing to the conservation of the Nation's coal and to the expanded use of coal in current or new markets. Since about 50% of coal consumption in the United States is in the production of electric power, 20% in production of metallurgical coke, and over 20 % by industry in producing process steam and power, the Bureau has placed much emphasis on research that will maintain coal's leadership in these established areas. This emphasis is reflected in the projects discussed on these pages. Bear in mind that this survey is not all-inclusive. Other projects underway include studies on furnace performance factors, improved burner design, and other critical boiler work which can be used immediately by industry to improve efficiency of current practices in power generation; other investigations are aimed at reducing fireside deposits and corrosion of boiler and super- heater tubes, fly ash utilization, and control of SO, from flue gases (a major step in preventing air pollution). These plus many other projects during the past years have served to focus attention on the fact that the U. S. Bureau of Mines is presently making the largest single contribution to this Nation's coal research effort.

THE EXISTENCE of petroleum in the rocks of Ohio and Indiana seems to have been first shown by wells dug for salt. The fuel, however, was objectionable owing to its odor and inflammability. Not until the brake well was drilled in 1859 did the people appreciate the value of rock oil, and then they at once began plans to secure the coveted fuel.. The first successful well in these two states was near . Macksburg, in southeast .Ohio, where at a depth of 59 ft. (17 m.) :oil was found in commercial quantity (1860). A year later this fuel was secured on Cow Run, in the same county, and at about the same time in Noble, Morgan and perhaps other counties in that part of Ohio. The second great step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana was taken in 1884 when the reservoir of natural gas in the Trenton limestone of northwest Ohio was tapped, and where a year later oil was secured in the same formation. Petroleum in this limestone was obtained in Indiana in 1889.1 The third step in the production of oil' in Ohio and Indiana is associated with the Clinton sand of Ohio. Natural gas in large volume was discovered in that rock at Lancaster, in 1887, and the area has been extended until it has become the largest individual producer in the world. The presence of natural gas in such great volume all but demonstrated to the driller that-oil lay hidden near by. Soon the search for it was started but not until 1899 was petroleum in commercial quantity found in the Clinton sand, and a large pool was not located in it until 1907. The fourth step in the development of the industry was taken in 1913, when the pool in Sullivan County, in western Indiana, was opened. The producing rock is the Huron sandstone, which is the topmost member of the Mississippian system.2

A. W. FAHRENWALD, Socorro, 'N. M. (communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:
