While brass and other copper alloys have long been listed as offering health hazards to their workers, it is questionable if the metals involved are alone responsible for the trades' records of morbidity. The entire science of foundry sanitation is the product of the past two decades; and the best standards now operative would have been regarded as little short of revolutionary prior to 1910. The special handicap to the conservation of the health of the brass founder's employees has been the fact that, unlike the iron founder, his business could be profitably carried on in almost any small and unsanitary quarters. As a result, writers on occupational disease have accepted brass chills or brass founders' ague as an inevitable feature of the trade; and respiratory disabilities, as well as phthisis and disturbances of the nervous system, are also included as prevalent among those employed. While there can be no question as to the basic accuracy of past investigations, there is every reason to doubt the necessity for an undue percentage of ill health among brass molders and casters who are safeguarded by scientific ventilating standards and by improving personal habits of sobriety. There is, however, need for a campaign of education as to the most approved practices and equipment whereby the employer may safeguard the health of his workers, and thereby reduce his labor turnover and increase his productive efficiency. Broadly speaking, copper, tin, and aluminum carry negligible health hazards. The toxic qualities of lead, however, are a menace; especially if scrap lead is recovered or bought for foundry processes. The rapid volatilization of zinc renders its fumes and flocculent condensation the chief problems in conserving the health of the brass worker. IN the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mattawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were 'found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by Inspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica. All crude oils become more viscous when chilled, but the only oils that congeal and precipitate paraffin to such an extent as actually to cause production troubles are those that contain an appreciable amount of wax. In handling these oils of high wax content, three distinct problems may be encountered before the oil reaches the refinery. The first problem is the precipitation and accumulation of paraffin in the well, either in the oil string or on the face and in the pores of the sand. The second problem is the accumulation of paraffin and the congealing of oil in the transportation lines. The third problem is the precipitation of paraffin and the formation of tank bottoms. Factors That Control the Solubility of Paraffin in Crude Oil Two main factors, possibly three, govern the solubility of wax in crude oil. The first of these is temperature. The solubility of wax in crude oil increases with an increase in temperature, and as the temperature approaches the melting point, the wax becomes soluble in all proportions in the crude oil. The higher the melting point of a wax, the less soluble it is in crude oil below its melting point. All crude oils containing wax can be chilled to a point where the oil is saturated with wax. If the temperature is decreased below this point, some of the wax will crystallize from solution. Fig. 1 shows the effect of temperature on the solubility of crude paraffin in oil. The second factor is the amount of volatile constituents and gas removed from the crude oil. Evaporation of the volatile constituents and gas lessens the volume of the oil and concentrates the solution of wax in the oil; therefore less wax can be held in solution at a definite temperature. As the natural amount of wax present in the oil is constant, this results in the oil becoming saturated with wax at a higher temperature than if the volatile constituents and gas were still in the oil. As an example of this, a fresh sample of crude oil having a gravity of 39.8

A study was made of the effect of the growth conditions on the perfection of single crystals of niobium (columbium). Dislocation densities, determined by means of double-crystal diffractometer measurements , were not greatly affected by the method of crystal preparation but could be reduced by annealing treatments. However, the size, sharpness, and tilt angles of the substructures, observed with X-ray reflection macrograph, were sensitive to variations in growth procedures as well as to subsequent thermal treatments. Although the dislocation density was the same in both types, there were more low-angle bound-aries in crystals grown by zone melting than in those prepared by strain anneal. Mechanisms to account for these observations are discussed in terms of dislocation movements. A planned study of the structure-sensitive properties of refractory metals required the use of single crystals of a high degree of structural perfection and, for ease of handling, of large cross section. It appeared that the strain-anneal technique could satisfy both of these requirements. First, crystals grown in the solid state have been reported to be more perfect than those obtained from the melt.' Second, the diameters of rods which may be produced by zone melting should have a theoretical limit determined by specific gravity, thermal conductivity, and surface tension, while the diameter of strain-annealed rods is limited only by practical considerations. Previously it was shown that niobium (columbium) single crystals of 1 in. diam2 may be grown by strain anneal, compared to the 0.5 in. maximum diameter achieved by zone melting, as reported for molybdenum by Belk.3 The current research was undertaken to investigate and optimize the effect of various process variables on the perfection of 1/4 and 1/2-in.-diam niobium single crystals grown by strain annealing and to compare their perfection to those grown by zone melting. Characterization of these crystals was more conveniently accomplished by means of X-ray than by metallo-graphic techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Zone-melted crystals of 1/4 in. diam were produced by the standard electron-beam zone-melting technique. The swaged and cleaned rods were outgassed, in the solid state at a temperature near its melting point, at a rate of 12 in. per hr, and single crystals were grown by making two molten passes at 2 in. per hr. By maintaining a zone length of 4 to % in., very uniform single crystals several inches long were obtained. For the strain-annealed crystals, an induction heater was used, in preference to other types of heating, to take advantage of the good penetration of large sections. A five-turn coil, 1 in. long, operating at 10 kc and powered by a motor generator, was contained in a vacuum chamber. The rod, suspended from the upper end, was raised through the coil for both recrystallization and crystal growth. In preliminary work single crystals of the same material were also grown with single and multiturn coils powered by a 450-kc generator. A vacuum of 2 X 10-6 Torr was maintained at temperatures up to 2400°C. Starting with electron-beam-melted ingots of 21/2 in. diam, the analysis for which is given in Table I, the material was cold-swaged to the desired cross section of 1/4 and 1/2 in. diam and then recrystallized. The rods were then strained in a tensile machine and converted to single crystals by passing through the induction coil. As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and smallman,4 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point in the poly crystalline portion. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". This procedure has certain limitations. If the bending operation exceeds the critical strain, recrystallization may take place. Also, the amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry, and up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. In preparation for X-ray examination, single crystals were sectioned and planed by means of the spark-erosion technique. AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites, we have made a determination of the effects of cobalt on the activity of carbon in y iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Co alloys were equilibrated at 1000°C in controlled CO-C02 atmospheres, following the procedure of R. P. smith.' The 0.010-in.-thick samples were analyzed for carbon by microcombustion analysis2 to give a set of isoactivity curves. The latter were converted to activity-coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith's data' for the activity of carbon in pure iron measured in a CO-C02 mixture. Table I shows the composition of the base alloys used, while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In the notation of Wagner,' the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Eq. [I] adequately correlates the experimental points for those alloys which were prepared from electrolytic iron by arc-melting (2,4, and 7 pct Co). The results for the 10 pct Co alloy (supplied by Crucible Steel Co.) do not correlate with the others. In fact, the experimental points for this alloy correspond to an interaction parameter of It is possible that the interaction parameter is a function of concentration for large cobalt additions, but we are inclined to attribute the discrepancy to the presence of a significant amount of aluminum added to this alloy for deoxidation purposes (Table I). Preliminary measurements for the system Fe-C-A1 have indicated an interaction parameter of Which implies that the effect of aluminum in solution on the carbon activity is sixty times greater than the effect of an equal weight percentage of cobalt. These observations cast some doubt on the precision of the results of Chandhok, Hirth, and Dulis who used this same 10 pct alloy for their experiments, obtaining an interaction parameter of E = 2.2. There is considerable doubt as to the activity of a plane Fe-C system. Using a CH4-Ha mixture, Smith obtains cg = 6.1 for the effect of carbon on the activity of carbon in austenite, rather than the value of 8.9 given in Eq. [I]. The use of CHa-Ha mixtures has recently been questioned by Kaufman, Radcliff, and cohens who state that there is some possibility that other hydrocarbons are formed. Fortunately, the determination of the interaction parameter is not sensitive to the coefficient of Nc. For example, using the CHI-H2 results we obtain a value which is almost the same as that obtained using the CO-CO, results. The authors wish to thank Mr. E. J. The Cripple Creek district occupies a cluster of foot-hills on the south side of Pike's Peak and is a portion of an extensive, though uneven, plateau which unites the eastern range of the Rocky mountains with the Sangre de Cristo. It is essentially a small volcanic area, of about 20 square miles, amid the granite of the Front range. But though, when regarded as a rich mining district, it may be considered as an isolated area,* yet, geologically, it is, as Whitman Cross has pointed out, only an outlying portion of a much larger volcanic region, which stretches to the south and west, around Silver Cliff and the Rosita hills, forming the picturesque country cut by the deep cañons of the Arkansas river and its tributaries. The mines are situated amid a volcanic complex, consisting of tuffs and breccias which have been penetrated by an extensive system of dikes and other intrusive masses. The prevailing formation is an andesite breccia, which lies upon the worn surface of the granite and fills the deep basin around a volcanic vent. The breccia, since its deposition, has been broken into by several eruptions of phonolite and, later still, by a series of thin dikes of basalt and other allied rocks of a highly basic composition. The successive sedimentary formatione which, elsewhere in Colorado, lie upon the basal granite, are not represented in the district; whatever sediments were laid down before the volcanic period must have been removed by erosion, and there is very little evidence which affords a datum-line whereby the geological age of the volcanic eruptions can be determined. An approximate phase diagram has been developed for the CaF2-CaC2 system, indicating a eutectic point at 1240°C, Ncac2 = 0.13, and no detectable solid solution in either phase. The liquidus line is shown to correspond to a simple c22- ion in solution. A thermo-chemical study of&apos; the reaction between carbon-saturated Ni-Ca alloys and CaC2-CaF2 liquids indicates that lhe Raoullian activity coefficient of CaC2 in dilute solution in Cap2 al 1500°C lies between 8 and 10. Some effects of the stabilily of Cap2-CaC2 solutions at high temperatures on electroslag remelting praclice are outlined. THE alkaline earth acetylides. MIIC2, have a reasonably high thermochemical stability at high temperature in the solid state,&apos; with the exception of magnesium, which forms an unstable acetylide at low temperatures (-500°C) and a carbide, Mg2C3, in the range 700&apos; to 1000°C. The acetylides of calcium and barium have been shown to have limited solubility in their respective chlorides,&apos; and further these solutions contain the acetylide as a C: ion.&apos; The equivalent magnesium solutions have not been studied. Although calcium "carbide" is used as a desulfuriz-ing reagent in steelmaking. and is possibly present as an acetylide-oxide phase in very basic electric arc practice slags, the acetylide ion appears to be substantially unstable in a silicate slag.* As a conse- *This instability arises from equilibria in the reaction: CaC2 + CO = (Ca0) + 3C where the low intrinsic solubility of CaC2 in silicate lattice, and the low activity of CaO in a silicate solution where CaO/Si02 < 1, combine to give a very small equilibrium concentration of CaC2 in solution in such silicate slags at temperatures in the region of I 500°c, even under carbon-saturated conditions. Under highly basic conditions, a liquid CaO-CaC2 phase may separate from the silicate system quence of this, the possibility that reactions involving CaC2 in silicate solutions are of importance to general steelmaking practice is remote. However, in operations involving a slag primarily based on a halide, or alkaline earth oxide, we must take into account the possibility that CaC2 will appear in quantities sufficient to significantly affect both the chemical and physical properties of the slag. The work outlined below presents a study of the CaF2-CaC2 system intended to provide sufficient data to allow an estimate of the importance of this system to electroslag remelting and welding practice. However, we should indicate at this point that there will be other processes, e.g., heat treatment, flux cleaning of castings, fused salt electrolysis, and so forth, where alkaline-earth halide fluxes are in contact with carbon, graphite, or carbides, and where halide-acetylide solutions must be taken into account. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Structural Studies. In view of the difficulty ex-perienced in handling CaC2 prepared from calcium turnings and propane gas at 700°C, it was decided to use solutions prepared directly in the equilibration apparatus, Fig. 1. The starting materials were: a) Ni-Ca-C alloy, prepared by adding calcium to liquid nickel held under calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible; b) calcium fluoride, prepared by fusing calcium fluoride powder (British Drug House "EXTRA PURE") calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible, in air, followed by electrolysis between graphite electrodes at 1 amp cm-2 density, for 10&apos; coulombs per g CaF2. This procedure decomposes the CaO produced by hydrolysis during the fusion step, replacing it by CaC2; Ca2+ + 2e-Ca*(l) Ca*(l) + 2C(gr)-(CaC2)caF2 O2- -2e-O*(g) O*(g) +C(gr)-CO(g) This results in a composition of between 2 and 5 wt pct CaC2 in CaF2. Fifty grams (in lumps) of this material were placed in a graphite crucible, together with Ni-Ca-C alloy (averaging 20 wt pct Ca), and the equilibration apparatus assembled. The alloy reacted with the crucible at high temperature to give CaC2, which dissolved in the calcium fluoride solution to give the desired composition. Cooling curves were plotted manually for these liquids, with rapid stirring and CaF2 seeding to minimize supercooling, and using a Pt/Pt 13 Rh thermocouple calibrated on the freezing points of nickel and copper. This gave a reproducibility of ±0.l°C. and an absolute accuracy of the thermocouple of ±l°C. An example curve is shown in Fig. 2, with the CaF2 end of the binary system in Fig. 3. The CaF2-CaC2 ingots were crushed, under dry nitrogen, and sampled for chemical analysis and X-ray examination. Analytical details are given in the Appendix. Powder diffraction data indicated that the only phases present in all samples examined were calcium fluoride and tetragonal (Types I and 111) calcium acetylide,4 with no evidence of solid solutions or compound formation. 2) Thermochemical Studies. The apparatus used to obtain activity data on CaC2 in these systems is shown in Fig. 4. It consists of an arrangement whereby the graphite crucible and its contents (CaF2-CaC2. THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby&apos;s classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. In talking with a good many people, I have discovered that concrete is being used A good deal for a wide variety of oils ranging from 14° to as high as 40° Bé., especially, by some of the western railroads:, If any member has had experience, in storing gasoline in concrete, I should like to learn of it. KNAPP, Ardmore Pa.).-I have had considerable experience in building masonry tanks for gas Holders. I do not believe it is possible to build a concrete or masonry tank of any kind. With hydraulic cement, mortar, which will be absolutely water-tight, unless the bottom and inner wall, after completion are waterproofed with some impervious material. The same will be true of oil tanks, the bottom and inner face of which must be made impervious to oil. Masonry tanks are intended to be sunk in the ground. All that the wall of the tank then amounts to is a retaining wall to keep the excavation in shape and to receive an impervious coating. The bottom of, a; tank, when empty, must be protected by a relief valve from any hydraulic: pressure acting from below. At ordinary prices, for sheets, a tank 100 ft. diam by 20 ft. deep can be built of steel much quicker and cheaper than of masonry. Several years, ago I saw very large oil storage tank under construction in California the bottom and sides being concrete. The sides were, sloped at about the single of repose for the material excavated: If you build a steel oil tank, you can get. .men for the work who do nothing else, and you, are likely to get a satisfactory job; but if you wish to build a concrete or masonry tank it is almost: impossible to find men skilled in building absolutely water-tight masonry Work. In discussion of Dr. Fitterer&apos;s paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given. l We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides was traced to the use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 54 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber. With the use of the more reliable Eschka method for sulfur determination (as in coke), there was however no serious attack on the sulfides in the anode chamber with a variety of different liquids, as shown in Tables 2 and 4. A simple robust rock bolt load gage was tested in the laboratory to define its characteristic behavior and to obtain a measure of its performance. The gage uses three vibrating wire sensors crimped 120 (2.09 rad) apart into the outer surface of a hollow cylindrical steel, tube. The resonant frequencies of the wires change as the gage is loaded. This change is read with a Creare meter developed for the Bureau of Mines on a previous contract to read borehole stress gage results. A statistical analysis of data obtained defines the variables influencing results. A U.S. patent (3,914,992) assigned by the author to the Dept. of the Interior was granted Oct. 28, 1975.

THE first press was installed in June, 1910, and the second in March,1911. They produce 1,000 briquettes per hour, weighing 5 kg. (11.05 1b.) each, under a pressure of about 400 kg. per square centimeter (5,689.2 lb. per square inch). The chloride of magnesium is received from the potash mines at Hanover in tank cars in approximately a 35 per cent. solution. The quantity of solution added to the flue dust varies between 2 and 3 per cent., so that the briquettes contain about 1 per cent of MgCl2. To fresh dust as much as 10 per cent. of coke breeze may be added and bri¬quettes made that still have a crushing strength of from 25 to 30 kg. (377 to 426.6 lb. per square inch) after 36 hr., and 45 kg. (639.9 lb. per square inch) after six days. After having treated 140,000 tons of the material, the reports of the blast furnaces show that the briquettes improved the action of a furnace and produced less dust than did Minette ore. As much as 35 per cent. of briquettes is added to the furnace charge without bad effects on operations. The presence of chlorine did not produce any corrosion in the furnace, downtakes or other piping. The presence of a certain amount of chlorine in the dust reduces the amount of chloride of magnesium which it is necessary to add for briquetting.

This paper reviews pertinent geology of the Biwabik iron formation, Mesabi Range, Minnesota. This iron formation is divisible into four members. Each member is distinctive and contains marker horizons, which are recog nizable throughout all phases of alteration from lean, fresh rock to high-grade iron ore. Some beds have a larger magnetite content than others. During the process of ore genesis, which is essentially an oxidation process, the magnetite content is lowered. Alteration from iron formation to ore includes both oxidation of iron minerals and silica removal by leaching and these distinct processes progress at variable rates for different locations and structures. Magnetic intensities, of each horizon of the iron formation are dependent chiefly upon its preoxidation magnetite content, upon the subsequent degree of oxidation, upon the character of the enclosing rocks, and on the extent of fracturing, folding, or faulting. The results of a number of magnetic surveys are described and are correlated with results of drill-hole and mine exploration and developmerit. The magnetic anomalies obtained are discussed in relation to phases of formation of ore within the iron formation. This paper reviews pertinent geology of the Biwabik iron formation, Mesabi Range, Minnesota. This iron formation is divisible into four members. Each member is distinctive and contains marker horizons, which are recog nizable throughout all phases of alteration from lean, fresh rock to high-grade iron ore. Some beds have a larger magnetite content than others. During the process of ore genesis, which is essentially an oxidation process, the magnetite content is lowered. Alteration from iron formation to ore includes both oxidation of iron minerals and silica removal by leaching and these distinct processes progress at variable rates for different locations and structures. Magnetic intensities, of each horizon of the iron formation are dependent chiefly upon its preoxidation magnetite content, upon the subsequent degree of oxidation, upon the character of the enclosing rocks, and on the extent of fracturing, folding, or faulting. The results of a number of magnetic surveys are described and are correlated with results of drill-hole and mine exploration and developmerit. The magnetic anomalies obtained are discussed in relation to phases of formation of ore within the iron formation. Sheets of the magnesium alloys AZ31B, HK31A, and ZE10A in several different tempers were tested in tension and determinations were made of the ratio of width-to-thickness strain. A marked increase in the ratio with tensile straining and a dependence upon alloy and test direction are rationalized in terms of a balance between the amounts of basal and prism-plane slip. All such variations are related, in turn, to the prevailing crystallographic texture. Fracture appearance is explained on the basis of anisotropy in plastic flow, and implications for developing texture -hardening effects in these alloys are discussed. ThE crystallographic texture or preferred orientation of a given material is determined by details of processing history. Such texture is known to influence many aspects of material behavior, in particular both the yielding and strain-hardening characteristics which are of special interest in the present work. Traditionally, the resulting plastic anisotropy has not been regarded as especially desirable. Earing in drawn sheet is perhaps the most common example of an unwanted effect of texture. However, it has also been recognized that suitable textures may be usefully employed to improve drawability,1,2 as a specific example, and generally to control yielding resistance under combined-stress loading.374 Texture would seem to be a detail of structure not yet exploited to nearly the fullest extent. A convenient basis for characterizing anisotropy in plastic behavior is the ratio of width-to-thickness strains obtained in a tension test;5&apos;6 the parameter is frequently labeled "R" and its value is revealing with respect to the nature of the prevailing texture. R gives a useful measure of a material&apos;s "thinning resistance". For an isotropic material, R = 1. With R > 1 the increased through-thickness strength in a sheet means greater resistance to yielding under biaxial tension, or "texture hardening";3&apos;4 if R < 1 the result may be a "texture softening" under the same loading conditions.4 Most R data relate to steel sheets for deep-drawing applications. Values for steel and other materials of cubic structures are not often much greater than 1 and nearly constant with strain in testing.1,2,7,8 To explore the implications of plastic anisotropy further, it was felt that experiments with much more strongly textured materials would be useful, and this led to the choice of magnesium alloys. The "ideal" sheet texture for magnesium contains the (0001) plane in the rolling plane, which ought to lead to R values approaching infinity. However, departures from the ideal texture, the possibility of slip in non-close-packed directions, and deformation by twinning would all be expected to introduce some range of R. Accordingly, studies on these materials were undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys in sheet form, Table I, were selected to obtain a variation in crystallographic texture, in the expectation that this would be reflected in differences in plastic anisotropy. Pole figures constructed by the Schulz surface-reflection technique9 were provided with the experimental materials by the Dow Metal Products Co. Profiles of pole density along great circles through the rolling (0 deg) and transverse (90 deg) directions were prepared from the pole figures and are collected in Figs. 1 and 2; considerable departure from the "ideal" (0001) alignment in the rolling plane is evident, with the largest angular spread in both directions being found in the ZEl0 alloy. Results of tensile tests on full-thickness specimens of 6-in. gage length by 1/2-in. width are given in Fig. 3 as engineering stress-strain curves* in rolling and transverse directions. All tests but one were made at a constant drive rate of 0.02 in. per min, and the final values of percent elongation at fracture, over the initial 6-in. gage length, are noted at the ends of the curves; one test on ZE10A-

Numerous articles have been written about the coal miner ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. However, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers&apos; Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio&apos;s, and in 1876 by Maryland&apos;s. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. Several methods1-3 are being used to determine the WL and individual Rn-daughter concentrations in uranium mine atmospheres. The best of these methods is the one given in Ref. 3. According to this method, the WL and the Rn-daughter concentrations are determined from the total a-counts observed during three consecutive time intervals. Its only disadvantage lies in the fact that rather involved calculations are necessary to convert the observed counts into WL or pCi/l (picocuries per liter). There are, however, counting intervals that give simple weighting coefficients for the observed counts. This fact makes it possible to convert from a-counts to WL or pCi/l with the aid of a graph. After some trial runs on a computer the following equations emerged as the basis for the most practical procedure: [ ] NA, N.., and & stand for the number of RaA, RaB, and RaC atoms per liter of air. C(t1,t2) denotes the counts observed from time t. to time t2 (in minutes) after the end of the 5-min sampling period. E is the detector efficiency and V is the flow rate in liters per minute. With an accuracy loss of less than -5% one finds from [Eq. 1] by adding the corresponding terms: If the WL would have been calculated according to [Eq. 2] instead of using the graph, the result would have been 0.31. Since the values used for C&apos;s under [Eq. 3] represent the exact number of counts from a Rn-daughter mixture in equilibrium with 100/3 pCi of Rn the exact WL of this mixture can be calculated easily. In its strict application the name is limited to the fibrous varieties of the monoclinic amphiboles. Commercially, however, the most important of the asbestiform minerals is chrysotile, a fibrous variety of serpentine. About 95 per cent. of the asbestos used in manufacturing is chrysotile, and it commands a much higher price than any of the other fibrous minerals now on the market. Although the production of asbestos has increased rapidly in recent years, comparatively little has been published concerning its origin. The present paper is preliminary in its nature, and therefore does not pretend to exhaust the subject.
