We at Hughes Tool Co. are extremely proud of the quality of the hardware and techniques introduced through our efforts in tunnel-machine development and of the ready acceptance of them by manufacturers and contractors throughout the world. All of us who attended the conference and who are represented in the book, we believe, anticipate an increasing need for improved methods of underground excavation. The development of such methods will permit the further exploitation of our underground resources plus providing underground space for transportation and habitation at a rate compatible with demand. We hope that our comments, derived from the application of Hughes Tool Co.'s rotary boring experience, may provide a better understanding of the boring method as a possible avenue through which the desired improvement in underground excavation may be attained. We hope you may also become aware of some of the problems Hughes, as a pioneer developer of raise, shaft, and tunnel-boring equipment, must face prior to further major undertakings in this very interesting field. Our task is to acquaint you with the present status of the Hughes Tool Co. development program as it relates specifically to tunnel-boring machines. We feel this task can best be accomplished by a brief review of the general sequence of events leading to and constituting an equipment development program and more specifically the manner in which these events have occurred to either influence or further our boring-machine development program. The development of a machine to accomplish a certain function or series of functions is usually a very long and tedious process to which any number of individuals must contribute, perhaps over a period of centuries. Of particular irony is the fact that often those who contribute most generously do not necessarily reap the greatest immediate benefit. A marketable ma- chine will, however, result from a sequence of events such as these: 1) A problem or need is defined. 2) An idea is born to eliminate the problem.

A new type water shut-off for use in air drilling has been developed. The method has been 99 to 100 per rent effective in several different formations of inter-ranular-type porosity. Since costs for materials, time and equipment used are relatively small, the process should extend economies of air drilling to many new areas. The treatment involves a new technique for forming a water-inroluble precipitate within the pores of a rock. Advantage it taken of the difference in mobility of a liquid and a gas in porous media to achieve the greatest volume of precipitate in a given pore. Reactants selected for the laboratory (2nd field tests were aluminum sulfate solution and gaseous ammonia. This process has been tested in both intergranular and fractured-type porosities. It has consistently shut-of between 99 and 100 per cent of the water flowing from formations having intergranular-type porosity and perrlreuhilities ranging from a few millidarcise to over a darcy The treatment is not particularly suitable for shutting-off water from fractured formations although plugging of the order of 50 per cent or greater has been achieved in all such applications. Among advantages of the treatment are: (I) no reaction waiting rime after a relatively short placement time, (2) a low mate-rials cost of about $3/f1 of hole treated, (3) use of common service-type equipment for treatment, and (4) no unusual requirements for mixing and placement. INTRODUCTION In rotary drilling with air or gas it has been possible to increase bit life by tenfold and more than double rate of penetration over corresponding performance when drilling with mud. These factors have amounted to as much as 22 per cent savings on total cost of drilling a well. However, these advantages are rapidly lost when water is encountered in an air- or gas-drilled well because water interferes with the removal of cuttings from the hole and also gives rise to other difficulties. In attempting to combat water troubles, operators have commonly resorted to such measures as mist drilling, treatment with cement or chemicals, converting to conventional mud drilling, or setting casing. In many cases these measures have either been costly or ineffective. In an effort to overcome this problem, studies were undertaken to develop an effective and economical water shut-off technique for use in formations possessing inter-granular-type porosity. Extensive laboratory experimentation finally led to a unique method for producing a water-insoluble precipitate within the pores of a sandstone. The unique part of the treatment is use of a liquid and a gas to form the precipitate, and in this case the reactants used were aluminum sulfate solution and gaseous ammonia. The reaction between these two materials is shown in the following equation. The aluminum hydroxide is insoluble in water and the ammonium sulfate, though soluble, can only be removed from the formation pores by diffusion—an extremely slow process. Although the precipitate formed by the reaction is not particularly firm, great strength is not needed for a precipitate to bridge and plug intergran-ular-type porosity. An informal, subscription dinner, at $1.50 a plate, was enjoyed inn' the early evening, by 62 members and guests. After dinner a technical session was held, and a paper entitled Preliminary Outline of Paper on Mines in the Boulder Batholith was presented by J. A. Grimes, who is joint author of the paper, with Paul Billingsley. The paper elicited a lively and interesting discussion, in which a score of members took part. INTRODUCTION Landowners in Texas for many years have freely granted, reserved and leased "oil, gas and other minerals" or interests therein. In recent years we have witnessed much litigation concerning what sub- stances should be included as "other minerals" within the phrase "oil, gas and other minerals," and this question has received the attention of numerous legal scholars. At the South Texas Uranium Seminar held in Corpus Christi, Texas, in September, 1978, Mr. William R. Dodson presented a paper dealing with this very subject and entitled "Uranium - Mineral or Surface? Who Owns It?" In his paper, Mr. Dodson reported on two recent Texas Supreme Court decisions, Acker v. a, 464 S.W.2d 348 (Tex. 1971) and Reed v. Wylie, 554 S.W.2d 169 (Tex. 1977). which held that the particular substance in question in each case is not a mineral within the phrase "oil, gas and other minerals" if substantial quantities of the substance lie so near the surface that production will entail the stripping away and substantial destruction of the surface. Since that time another chapter has been written in the Texas saga of "When is a Mineral not a Mineral?" and it is the intent of this paper to present an update of the Texas law. A review of the early Texas cases so ably covered by Mr. Dodson in his paper will not be repeated, except as is necessary to illustrate the evolution of the legal doc- trine which has been so aptly named "The Surface Destruction Test". BACKGROUND In order to appreciate the genesis of the problem, one must consider that oil and gas production commenced in Texas many years ago, Spindletop came in in 1901. As oil and gas became more valuable, land- owners with considerable frequency sold interest in the oil, gas and mineral estates in their lands, and reserved interest in the oil, gas and mineral estates in their lands when they disposed of their property. Due to the oil and gas background, and perhaps be- cause oil and gas was paramount in the minds of the parties, the traditional language employed in these grants and reservations was "oil, gas and other minerals" or variations thereof. There are literally hundreds of instruments employing this language constituting a link in the chains of title to thous- ands of acres of Texas land. In addition, there are thousands of acres of Texas land held by oil, gas and mineral leases, the primary terms of which have been perpetuated by production, containing similar language in their granting clauses. The severance of the mineral estate from the surface estate results in two separate and distinct estates, each having all of the incidents and attributes of an estate in land. with the surface estate being the serviant estate, and the mineral estate being the dominant estate and having certain easements in the surface estate to explore. produce and remove the minerals. Harris v. Currie. 176 S.W.2d 302, 305 (Tex. 1943). As observed by the court in the Harris case, this is because a grant or reservation of minerals would be wholly worthless if the grantee or reservor co~lld rwt enter upon the land in order to explore for and extract the minerals granted or reserved. Although the Texas law has recognized that an oil and gas lessee has the right to use so much of the surface as is reasonably necessary to produce the minerals. Warren Petroleum Corporation v. Monzingo, 304 S.W.2d 362, 363 (Tex. 1957), recent decisions of the Court have qualified this doctrine. In Getty Oil Company v. Jones. 470 S.W.2d 618 (Tex. 1971). Getty's pumpine, units were interfering with ones self-propelled sprinkler system utilized for irrigating the premises, and Jones sought to require Getty to install the-pumping units in cellars so that the sprinkler system could pass over them. In an effort to accommodate both the surface estate and the mineral estate, the court held (page 622) "...where there is an existing use by the surface owner which would otherwise be precluded or impaired, and where under the established practices in the industry there are alternatives available to the lessee whereby the minerals can be recovered, the rules of reasonable usage of the surface may require the adoption of an alternative by the lessee". Bearing in mind that the "reasonable use doctrine" grew up in the oil and gas industry involving sub- stances which can be produced by methods that do not destroy or deplete the surface estate, the question presented is whether the Texas courts will extend this doctrine to situations where claimants of "other minerals" seek to produce shallow deposits of iron ore, coal, lignite and uranium by surface mining methods which do destroy or deplete the surface estate? The surface destruction test has answered this question in the negative, at least as to iron. coal and lignite. However, the multitude of mineral estates in Texas which have been created by a grant. reservation or lease of "oil, gas and other minerals" will, doubtlessly, continue to fuel the fires of litigation. BENEFICIATION of a Korean scheelite ore has been studied during the past year in the Basic Industries Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. A flowsheet has been recommended including flotation, gravity separation, and a final cleaning by a magnetic separator. The investigation was continued in the field of flotation in order to establish the effect of certain variables on recovery and grade of rougher concentrates. The results of this investigation are recorded here. Mineralogy The scheelite ore was obtained from Korea and was mined from the Sang Dong deposit. This deposit is described as lying in gently dipping metamorphosed sedimentary beds of Cambrian age.' The metamorphism was probably either metasomatic replacement or recrystallization, or both, with subsequent hydrothermal deposition. Igneous bodies in the form of granite porphyry have been found within 7 km of the main shaft and are considered to be a possible source of the mineralizing solutions. The Myobong formation, the host for the Sang Dong deposit, was laid down in middle Cambrian times and consists of series of mudstone, siltstone, shale, and marl, with local stratification of mica schists, hornfels, and tactites. The scheelite is found in quartz bands in the tactites. Although there are six of these bands, only one, the "main bed" averaging 1.75 pct WOs, has been mined to any extent. The ore sample as received in the laboratory was the product of a cone crusher and was all —2 in. The rock appeared to be even textured, medium to fine grained, and gray green in color. No scheelite could be recognized by the unaided eye. However, under ultraviolet light of 2537 A, the scheelite fluoresced and could be distinguished from the gangue. Under the black light, the scheelite showed no definite vein structure but was disseminated throughout the specimen. The raw ore had a specific gravity of 2.96 and weighed about 125 lb per cu ft at —20-mesh Tyler. The —2-in. material was stage crushed through 20-mesh, and samples were cut for mineralogical, chemical, and spectrochemical analyses. Several polished sections were cut from hand specimens. Figs. 1 and 2 show quartz to be the matrix for scheelite. It was reported by Kim2 that the greatest scheelite concentration in the mine is found with a high concentration of quartz and a decrease in the abundance of garnet. Diameters of scheelite particles ranged from 1.2 mm down to less than 50 microns. Spectrochemical analysis showed the ore to be high in aluminum, bismuth, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, tungsten, and with lesser amounts of beryllium, chromium, lithium, sodium, and titanium. THE mechanism of pressure sintering, or hot pressing, for ceramic materials, has been investigated by several researchers.1-8 Plastic flow has been suggested as the rate-determining mech-anism1,2 while grain boundary sliding3,4 and fragmentation processess have been found controlling in other studies. Vasilos and Spriggs5,6 have reported that pressure sintering occurs by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For the pressure sintering of metals, investigations with lead7 and with tin6 have not identified the operative mechanism during consolidation of these powders. This note reports the results of a pressure sintering study initiated to determine the mechanism controlling the densification of spherical copper powder. Temperatures of 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600°C at 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures were investigated. The copper powder for this study was obtained from Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N.J. The minimum purity was reported to be 99.9 pct. The powder size was -325 mesh and a lineal analysis showed the average size to be less than 1 p. An alumina die body and punches were employed. Graphite spacers were placed between the copper powder and the punches before pressing. It was expected that the graphite would form carbon monoxide with any entrapped air and form a reducing atmosphere within the die cavity. This condition was generally realized during pressing although a minor amount of oxidation occurred at 500" and 600°C. The oxide particles were located randomly in the pressed samples and were not considered to influence the densification process. Calibration tests showed the temperature of the copper pellet to be about 20°C less than the die wall temperature, probably resulting from heat losses through the punches. This difference was compensated during the experimental pressing operations. The hot pressing equipment employed for this work has been described by Spriggs et a1.9 and was calibrated with a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton load cell. Travel of the punches was monitored with a dial indicator showing increments of travel to 0.0005 in. Relative density was calculated at selected time intervals for a known copper weight, punch travel, and die diameter. The accuracy of this calculation was *1 pct. Average grain size after hot pressing was obtained by lineal analysis. Typical densification curves are presented in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 where relative density is plotted vs log time as a function of applied pressure for the 300" and 600°C pressure sintering temperatures, respectively. The curves for 400" and 500°C were similar to those at 300°C and consequently are not shown. The curves at 300°C as well as 400" and 500°C do not show an end-point or limiting density for a particular applied pressure. At 600°C, a density in excess of 95 pct of theoretical has been reached such that further densification is extremely slow for the 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures. It is suggested that further densification at these pressure levels may be retarded or prevented by discontinuous grain growth, by entrapped gases, and by other microstructural limitations as described by Cob1e.10 The curve for 2500 psi hot pressing pressure is a straight line over the time interval although a slight change in slope may be occurring at the last time intervals. The plastic flow models,1,2 derived for hot pressing, predict the existence of an end-point (or limiting) density dependent on the yield point of the material at the temperature of interest. What are future prospects for U.S. mining? In many quarters the assumption is made that this country has passed its zenith as a mineral producer -- that it is in a period of decline and that it is becoming a have-not nation like Japan and much of Western Europe. These industrial rivals of ours must depend almost entirely on others for their mineral supplies. In trying to answer this question one must of course distinguish between resources and productive capacity. In today's volatile and competitive markets, the definition of what are reserves and what are merely identified resources becomes ever more difficult. Many large deposits have been found that are unlikely to be viable in the marketplace under normal conditions but that can be of significance to the nation's military and industrial security in times of emergency. I should like to draw on personal experience from World War I1 for illustration. 4fter Pearl Harbor great concern developed over the availability of a long 1ist of strategic materials for which this country was largely dependent on imports. Included were a number of minerals of which domestic deposits had been identified. Among these were chromite, manganese ore, mercury, mica and tungsten.

About thirty miles north of the city of Belleville (which is situated on a branch of Lake Ontario), and in the township of Marmora, Ontario, there is found a belt of gold-bearing quartz veins, which present geological mineralogical, and economic features of great interest to the profession. The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded hills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaceous or talcoid slates forming the walfs of and horses in the veins. IN recent interesting papers,1,2 Bardos et al. have described ternary Laves phases of the type A2(BsSi) and A4(B5Si3) where A = titanium vanadium, niobium, and so forth, and B = manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel; other more complex formulae have also been established. In these phases, silicon plays the part of the smaller B atom of a Laves phase AB2, and the interatomic distances show that the effec- tive silicon radii lie between 1.16 and 1.21Å, and are thus very much smaller than the metallic radius of silicon for CN = 12. It does not seem to have been pointed out that these small atomic radii are almost the sape as the normal covalent radius of silicon (1.174Å). If, therefore, silicon acts as an acceptor of electrons as suggested by Bardos et al.,1 it appears to do so, not by the building up of a negatively charged silicon ion which would be large, but by the formation of what are very nearly or may be actually normal covalent bonds. Since a covalent bond contains two electrons, its formation would reduce the number of electrons available for bonding in other parts of the structure, and in this way the effect of silicon in stabilizing the o phase at high electron concentrations might be understood.

FIFTEEN thousand barrels of oil daily, the production of the United States 75 years ago, amounted to more than 90 per cent of world supply. Russia and Romania, neither of which produced as much as one thousand barrels daily, were the only other suppliers in substantial quantity. The adolescent oil industry of the United States, a dozen years old in 1871, was still confined to the Appalachian region. Wells were drilled by cable tools; many of them were "kicked down" by manpower with a spring pole; and depths were measured in hundreds rather than thousands of feet-a 1000-foot well was a deep well. Casing was an innovation, come into general use only a few years previously and still so new as to be subject to bitter patent litigation. Crude oil was packaged in wooden barrels and shipped by flat boat and barge on the creeks and rivers and by railroad. Such pipe lines as existed were only a few miles long. There were many refineries. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the Atlantic seaboard were refining centers. Refineries were very small, however, and their operations consisted essentially in simple fractionation by distillation and treating for quality. The products in demand were burning oil or kerosene and lubricating oils. Oil was not yet used as fuel and gasoline was a nuisance to the refiner.

INTRODUCTION Coal ash, presently the fifth most abundant of the solid minerals produced in the United States, is expected to become the fourth most abundant by the end of this decade (1). The production of fly ash from the combustion of pulverized coal amounted to a total of 44 million metric tons (Mt) in 1977 and is expected to Increase to 91 Mt by 1985. Coal ash, which results from the Inorganic clay and mineral content of the coal, contains several elements and thus can be considered as a mined and crushed mineral resource rather than a waste material Furthermore, potential problems associated with fly-ash disposal ponds and the leaching of potentially hazardous elements through groundwater infiltration and/or rainfall provide additional incentive for processing fly ash for environ- mental control as well as for the recovery of certain metal values. Fly ash could provide an abundant domestic source of aluminum and several other metals Aluminum is now recovered from bauxite, and over 90% of this ore is imported since domestic sources are limited and cannot meet the U.S. demand There is a close relationship between the aluminum content of fly ash and the domestic consumption of this metal (Table 1).

LIQUID-OXYGEN explosives commonly consist of a carbonaceous absorbent enclosed in a canvas wrapper and soaked with a liquid con-taining more than 90 mol per cent of oxygen. Investigation of these explosives in this country was initiated in 1917 by George S. Rice, then Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. The early development is summarized in two papers.1,2 Their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages were considered in a recent bulletin of the Bureau of Mines.3 Other publications of this Bureau4,5 treat the technology of these explosives and contain adequate references to pertinent literature. These investigations defined the properties of liquid-oxygen explosives and improved them greatly; however, an outstanding disadvantage is their high inflammability, a property of critical practical importance. These explosives as hitherto prepared are easily inflamed; the combustion resulting from an accidental ignition is particularly dangerous because of the ease with which it passes into detonation. For this reason the Bureau of Mines undertook a cooperative investigation, which has resulted in the development of fire-retardant treatment for the minimiza-tion or elimination of this hazard without materially impairing the explosive properties, including the ease of detonation. This presentation will offer a general description of the investigation and the outstanding results. Further phases will appear in subsequent short papers, and the entire investigation including the results of detailed experiments will be available in a forthcoming bulletin of the Bureau of Mines (Bull. 429). The effects produced by fire-retardant treatments of the carbonaceous absorbent and of the canvas wrappers were investigated separately, and the efficacy of combinations of these treatments with particular reference to the possibility of inflammation and to the development of detonation from inflammation was studied. Corundum, little publicized as an industrial abrasive, has, in its small way, contributed greatly to the production of many specialized items vital to our war program and to Our allies. Optical elements Of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some Of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any Of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mobs' scale index of 9, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent Of this paper to deal Only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. Ore Production and Consumption For the past two decades, south Africa has been the world's sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world's principal consumer of corundum ore; imports lor the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 Short tons per year, The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 Short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the united States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918 Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Madagascar has produced ore since 1910 but has had important output in only a few scattered years. South African production started in 1912

Optical elements Of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some Of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any Of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mobs' scale index of 9, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent Of this paper to deal Only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. Ore Production and Consumption For the past two decades, south Africa has been the world's sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world's principal consumer of corundum ore; imports lor the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 Short tons per year, The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 Short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the united States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918 Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Madagascar has produced ore since 1910 but has had important output in only a few scattered years. South African production started in 1912

Recent investigations1,2,3,4 have conclusively shown that the strain hardened state of metals depends upon the temperature and strain rate of pre-straining as well as on the total plastic strain. A typical example of the effect of temperature of prestraining on the work hardening of metals is reproduced in Fig 1. When pure aluminum is strained at liquid nitrogen temperature the upper solid stress-strain curve (OFGH) is obtained. But when pure aluminum is prestrained to e2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature and the test is then completed at liquid nitrogen temperature, the curve OBCD results. Thus a prestrain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature gives a flow stress C when continued at liquid nitrogen temperature, whereas a higher flow stress G results when the specimen is strained exclusively at liquid nitrogen temperature to the same strain E2. Consequently the metal strain hardens more rapidly at the lower temperature. Obviously the strain alone is not a measure of the strain hardened state in metals. Inspection of Fig 1 reveals that the flow stress at C is identical with that at F. This fact suggests that a strain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature induces the same work hardened state as a strain E1 = 0.058 at liquid nitrogen temperature. But this concept of equivalent strains is also in error. If curve CD is shifted to the left so that point C falls on F, point D becomes D'. Inspection of the curves reveals that the rate of increase of stress with strain at C is greater than the rate of increase of stress with strain at F even though the flow stresses are identical. Consequently C and F do not represent identical work hardened states. It therefore becomes important to ascer- tain how the strain hardened states at C and F might differ from each other. In a more recent report1 it was shown that straining at higher rates of strain increases the amount of strain hardening in a manner quite analogous to straining at lower temperatures. These observations suggested that the flow stress is not only a function of the strain but also a function of the strain rate-temperature history of straining, perhaps in accord with the Zener- ?H Hollomon parameter p = Ee /RT (where

Fox the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of -Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method was employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence, had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously- pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice's report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining. No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the 'conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice's report will be avoided.

The deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of Mississippi and Alabama respectively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewelll and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a 'general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. He is indebted to H. S. Rankin and N. A. Rose, of the Tennessee Valley Authority Geology Division, for field assistance. Location of Tripoli Deposits Fig. 1 shows the locations of deposits of tripoli in a long belt that extends from northeast Wayne County southwestward into northwest Alabama and thence passes into Mississippi, where the formations carrying it are finally covered by Cretaceous sand and gravel of the Mississippian Embayment. Occasional deposits occur also in the southeastern corner of Hardin County, Tennessee. While tripoli is found at nearly all points along this axis where the related formations are exposed, the largest deposits are grouped about three different centers. Waynesboro-Collinwood District.—In the area between Waynesboro and Collinwood, in Wayne County, Tennessee, tripoli of various grades outcrops in the valley of Green River and in tributary valleys on either side.
