The characteristics of successful heap and dump leach operations are first reviewed in a general sense. Then attention is focussed on solution management as the key operating parameter in leaching. The first part of this study includes a detailed conceptual analysis of fluid flow. This identifies the relationships between the flow parameters and the chemical and physical properties of the rock. Then these relationships are extended to practical systems in order to establish optimum application rates and solution distribution methods for heaps and dumps. The study shows that there is a maximum effective application rate, qmax, that can be used without causing solution short circuiting. This rate is a function of the minimum permeability in the heap or dump. The expression for qmax is qmax (gal/ft2/hr)[~]0.9 k (darcies). Here k is the appropriate permeability coefficient. Using this equation, qmax is found to be on the order of 1 gal/ft2/hr (4 cm/hr) for a typical heap or dump leach operation.

The strutural and cr~stallo~aphic features of the plates of austenite produced by the martensite to aus-tenite or reverse martensitic tramformation have been determined in an Fe-33 wt pct Ni alloy. Micro-focus X-ray techniques and single-surface trace analysis 072 bulk samples yielded two distinct habit planes, (0.174, 0.309, 0.~35)~ and (0.375, 0.545, 0.749jM. The former plane uas the one predorninantly observed and its existence was verified by transn~ission electron microscopy. The orientation relation-ship between the reversed austenite and the parent martensite was approximately the same as the Nishiyamna and other relationships reported for the direct tramformation. Replica and thin-joil obser-vations show that both high densities of tangled dis-locations and occasional twins constitute the fine structure of the reversed austenite. Application of the phenomenological theory to a variant of the predominant habit plane defines an irrational plane and direction for the second shear in accordance with the comnplexity of the fine structure. The shear accompanying the reverse martensitic transformation is at least 0.51, the maximnum value of- the tangent oJ the tilt angle measured on surface replicas. A mechanism relating the fine transformation twins in martensite to the nucleation of reversed austenite of the predominant habit is proposed. The reversal of Fe-Ni martensite takes place both at the edges of martensite plates and in a piecewise fashion within them.' The shear-type nature of the reverse transformation is verified by the surface relief which accompanies both edge-type reversal2 and the fragmentation of plates of martensite' as a result of rapid heating above the A, (austenite start temperature). The orientation relationship between the edge-type reversal product and the parent martensite, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, is reported to be within 4 deg of either the Kurdyumov-Sachs or Nishiyama relationships,' but there is no work at present in the literature relating to the crystallography of the platelike reversed austenite. The fine structure of reversed austenite after heating to 50°C above the Af is reported4 to be composed primarily of tangled and jogged dislocations in concentrations up to 10" per sq cm. A replica investigation of partially reversed Fe-Ni martensites5 corroborates the increase in dislocation density following reversal and presents indications of other possible modes of fine structure. This paper reports on an investigation performed to examine in detail the morphology and crystallography of the plates of reversed austenite and the shear which accompanies their formation in a matrix of Fe-Ni martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Discs of a high-purity Fe-32.9 wt pct Ni single crystal served as the starting material. The single crystal had been produced in the course of an earlier investigation6 and the carbon content was determined at the time to be 0.006 wt pct. The M,, and the A,, were respectively -120" and 300°C. Partial transformation to martensite was performed at -125°C and reversal of some of the martensite was accomplished by heating in the temperature range 340" to 355°C. Most samples were heated to the reversal temperature by immersion' in a salt bath for 2 min. For surface-relief studies some polished and etched Samples were heated in a tube furnace for ten min in a hydrogen atmosphere maintained over the samples throughout the heating and cooling cycles. Samples were prepared for metallographic examination by electropolishing and etching with an HC1-HNOs-H20 et~hant.~ On one of the surface-relief samples two sets of fiducial scratches were placed on the etched sample by drawing it over a slurry of 0.06 p alumina on a "microclothJ'. The orientations of individual plates of martensite were determined by X-ray analysis. A Rigaku-Denki microbeam X-ray generator in conjunction with a Micro-Laue camera with facility for precision location of the sample in front of the beam was employed for this purpose. The collimator size was 30 p and the specimen to film distance was 5 mm. The Laue photograms were enlarged to an equivalent 3-cm specimen to film distance for analysis. The orientation of each of the plates of martensite was compared to that of the parent austenite and the relationship be -tween the two phases was, in all cases, within a few degrees of those predicted for the direct transformation. The orientation relationship between one of the larger plates of reversed austenite and its parent martensite was determined in a similar manner. The habit plane of the islands of reversed austenite in the X-rayed plates of martensite was determined by a single-surface trace analysis. Each reversal island had with the parent phase one comparatively straight boundary which was presumed to represent the habit plane trace. The pole locus technique7 was applied to traces from six different plates of martensite to determine the indices of the habit plane. A 40-cm stereographic net was employed for this analysis The morphology and fine structure of the reversed austenite were studied by electron microscopy of pre-shadowed direct carbon replicas,5 and the macroscopic shear was evaluated by a two-stage replica technique similar to that employed in electron fractog-

FOR the diffusion of copper in silver-rich alloys, there have been only two previous investigations, that of Seith and Peretti in 1936, and that of Sawatzky and Jaumot2 in 1957. Seith and Peretti obtained a value of 24.8 keal per g-atom for the activation energy of diffusion whereas Sawatzky and Jaumot obtained a value of 46.1 keal per g-atom. Admittedly, Seith and Peretti used relatively high concentrations of 2 at. pet Cu and polycrystalline diffusion couples, while Sawatzky and Jaumot investigated tracer diffusion in single crystals of silver. The difference in the results, however, seems too large to attribute solely to solute concentration, as a change of over 20 keal per g-atom in the activation energy suggests a change in the mechanism of diffusion. Therefore, in the present investigation the diffusion coefficient for copper in polycrystalline Ag-2 at, pet Cu alloy is re-established using conventional sandwich-type diffusion couples and electron-probe microanalyses, and the results are compared with those of the previous studies. The diffusion couples were prepared from high-purity silver (99.999 pet) and high-purity copper (99.999 pet). The silver disks, 1/4 in. long and 4 in. in diam, were machined from an ingot which had been solidified in a dynamic vacuum of 10-3 mm of Hg to eliminate oxygen absorption which otherwise would result in copper oxide precipitation in the weld zone. The alloy disks of similar dimensions were machined from an alloy ingot (nominal composition 2 at. pet Cu) which had been unidirectionally solidified to obtain a predictable solute concentration,3 and homogenized for 1 week at 800°C. Sandwich diffusion couples were made by pressure welding an alloy disk between two silver disks in an induction heating coil. The couples were diffusion-annealed at temperatures of 800°, 756°, 699°, and 630°C in tube furnaces in which the temperature was controlled to better than ± l°C. The diffusion couples were examined metallographically for weld defects, and couples showing even minute defects at the weld interfaces were rejected. Concentration penetration curves were established using an A.R.L. Microprobe analyzer. CuKO radiation was counted and converted to concentration using 0.5 and 1.0 wt pet Cu chemically analyzed standards. Initially, four continuous profiles were obtained, and averaged to obtain the final diffusion curve. The initial analysis was performed commercially and the welds were not located with respect to the profile. Therefore, the results were rechecked by the authors using the Mellon Institute A.R.L. probe. In the latter case, concentrations were obtained at 10-µ steps for four different traverses, and then averaged to obtain

The data presented indicate that the critical shear stress and strain-hardening Thedatapresentedrate of a zinc monocrystal depend on the orientation of its slip direction with respect to its external boundaries. The tendency of a crystal to form deformation bands also depends on its shape. THE plastic behavior of pairs of zinc monocrystals in which both members of the respective pairs had the same orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis, but each had different orientations with respect to their rectangular external shapes, were compared in this investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to see what influence the shape or surface of a zinc crystal has on its mechanical properties. In a previous investigation of triangular zinc monocrystals,1 anomalous axial twisting was observed which seemed to be related to the triangular shape of the crystals. Wolff,' in 400°C tensile tests of rectangular rock-salt crystals bounded by cubic cleavage planes, found that, of the four equivalent slip systems, the two with the "shorter" slip directions yielded and produced slip lines at lower stresses than the other two. This observation and the work of Dommerich³ as formulated by Smekal4 as a "new slip condition" for rock-salt: "among two or more slip systems permitted by the shear stress law, with reference to the formation of visible slip lines by large individual glides, that slip system is preferred which has the shortest effective slip direction." More recently, Wu and Smoluchowski5 reported essentially the same effect for ribbon-like (20x2x0.2 mm) aluminum crystals at room temperature. Experimental Chemically pure zinc (99.999 pct Zn), purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., was the raw material. Glass envelopes, containing graphite molds and zinc, were evacuated while hot enough to outgas the graphite but not melt the zinc. At a vacuum of about 0.2 micron the envelopes were sealed off and then lowered through a furnace at 1 in. per hr so as to melt and resolidify the zinc and produce mono-crystals. One-half of one of the molds is shown in Fig. la. Each mold consisted of four pieces from a cylindrical graphite rod that was split longitudinally and transversely at its midpoints. Rectangular milled grooves 0.050 in. deep and % in. wide formed the mold cavity when the split halves were assembled with twisted wires. Fig. lb shows the specimen shape obtained when the top and bottom mold-halves were rotated 90" with respect to each other. Good fits prevented leakage and excess zinc was necessary to provide enough liquid head to fill the mold completely. In removing soft crystals from the molds it was impossible to avoid small amounts of bending. However, manipulations were carried out whenever possible with the crystals protected by grooved brass blocks. All specimens were annealed prior to testing. From the top and bottom sections of each crystal, X-ray specimens and tensile specimens 7 to 8 cm long were sawed. The tensile specimens were annealed inside evacuated tubes for 1 hr at 375°C. Next the crystals were cleaned and polished by 2-min dips in a solution of 22 pct chromic acid, 74 pct water, 2.5 pct sulphuric acid, and 1.5 pct glacial acetic acid.' Cleaning was followed by a 10-sec dip in a 10 pct caustic solution, then washed in water and alcohol, and dried. This treatment results in a bright surface covered by an invisible oxide film. The testing grips were a slotted type with set screws and were supported in a V-block during the mounting operations in order to avoid bending the crystals. A schematic diagram of the recording tensile-testing machine is shown in Fig. 2. The machine has been described elsewhere.' The head speed was 0.3 mm per sec for all tests. The crystal orientations were determined by the Greninger X-ray back-reflection method with an estimated accuracy of 1. Description of Crystal Geometry A schematic picture of a rectangular zinc mono-crystal is shown in Fig. 3. ABD designates the front edge of a basal plane (0001) of the crystal, the only active slip plane for zinc at room temperature. Of the three possible (2110) slip directions, the active one is indicated by an arrow. Cartesian coordinates are taken parallel to the specimen edges. INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. 1 1.4-1. Source of Water. Precipitation in the form of rain or snow is the original source of water that enters most surface mines. The precipitation, which does not escape to the atmosphere, either becomes surface run- off or infiltrates into the ground to become ground water (3,4). Evaporation and surface run-off can be measured. The water that infiltrates the ground disappears from view and is more difficult to evaluate. In general, it moves in a pattern similar to the surface run-off, but at a much slower rate, since its progress is impeded by many subsurface conditions. The infiltrating water descends through the soil and rock by whatever passageways permit flow until the water table or top of the zone of saturation is reached. Though usually pictured as a level surface, it is dependent upon the topography and the permeability of the enclosing material, and therefore it can be as erratic and unpredictable as the subsurface geology. Ground water may become surface run-off again at a lower point, and likewise, surface run-off of lakes and streams can infiltrate to become ground water. Should the ground water be confined to a permeable zone overlain by an impermeable barrier, a pressure is created. Such water is said to be artesian if the pressure head is sufficient to raise the confined water to the surface. These conditions are more commonly found in relatively flat-lying bedded formations. 11.4-2. Recognition and Estimation of Water. Dewatering and flood control should be considered by the design engineer at an early stage in all surface mine planning. Recognition of the possible problems, and making allowance for their solution, is an inexpensive precaution. Circumstances which should lead to investigation are: 1. High rainfall 2. Experience of other mines in the area 3. Evidence of water and caving in drill holes 4. Presence of springs and artesian wells 5. Geological evidence of aquifers.

In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical properties such as color, hardness, corrosion resistance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,= and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that measured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color determinations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2, 3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. I). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300oF. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point. Alloys Gold-copper.zilzc A~loys.—Gold-copper-zinc alloys melt, cast, and labricate easily. The low melting points, however, limit their use to some extent. The physical properties of these alloys are not entirely satisfactory. When the ultimate strength is satisfactory, the elongation and reduction of area are too low (Table I). Gold-copper-sinr-nickel A lloys.—In this group of alloys, in which zinc and nickel replace copper in approximately equal parts (Table I), the yield point, hardness, and ultimate strength increase with the increase of zinc and nickel content, while the reduction of area and elongation decrease. The physical properties are desirable, particularly of the white gold alloys. The alloys of this group are not difficult to cast and fabricate, and most of these colors could be used commercially. Gold-copper-nickel A lloys.—Gold-copper-nickel alloys are similar to the gold-copper-zinc and the gold-copper-zinc-nickel alloys. They do, however, possess high yield point, ultimate strength and hardness, somewhat higher than those of the other two groups mentioned (Table I). The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, Ill., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four coyentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade Auorspar.2-3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 19214 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Alines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. THE ores treated at the concentrating plant largely come from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately intergrown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead concentrates, (2) zinc concentrates, (3) acid-grade fluorspar concentrates and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrates.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 4 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; such as, for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. MANY recent contributions in the field of theoretical metallography have been concerned with crystallographic definitions or descriptions of various phenomena. The lattice orientation of the crystal being studied must be known before such definitions can be made. Practically all the metallic crystals used do not have crystal faces-other than the unknown "plane of polish"; hence resort must be had to other means of determin-ing orientations. The design of the plant facilities together with the necessary equipment required for the operation is at an optimum only for the specified plant with its peculiar priorities and preferences. Because many alternatives in design are possible to suit a particular plant, each plant designer and contractor must choose carefully in the selection of the site, design and choice of materials of construction, as well as the type of equipment necessary for the process. Basic factors as efficiency, dependability, simplicity, and safety must be considered early in the construction; while the choice of equipment, materials of construction, possible corrosion problems, automation, maintenance, effluents disposal and tailings dam construction can greatly affect the plant costs. While existing plants are in operation, the know-how gained from the operating experience of those plants can be invaluable in the new plant planning, design, and construction.

The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer. IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.

Prior to 1914, there was little demand for antimony in this country; its use was limited almost entirely to the manufacture of type and bearing metals. Practically no antimony ore was mined here, the market being supplied principally from China, and the alloy was produced by a direct mixing of lead and antimony. The great world war, with its demand for shrapnel in hitherto undreamed of quantities, precipitated a great boom in the price of antimony. Nominally quoted at 6 c. to 7 c. in 1914, the price increased by leaps and bounds to 45 c. in March, 1916. Under the stimulus of high prices many small mines were opened, for it became profitable to work ores containing as low as 20 per cent. antimony. High-grade sulfide ores (stibnite), containing 55 per cent. to 60 per cent. antimony, were received from Bolivia, China, and Alaska. Low-grade sulfide ores, running from 20 per cent. to 45 per cent., were produced in Nevada, California, Idaho, Utah, and Mexico; much of this ore was fairly rich in silver. The principal oxide ores came from Mexico and Oregon. The charge consisted of a variety of sulfide ores containing Sb 20 to 60 per cent. and SiO2 6 to 45 per cent., oxide ores containing Sb 20 to 40 per cent. and SiO2 10 to 45 per cent. Secondary materials, such as battery plates, battery mud, lead oxide, paint, etc., together with refinery skims, softener skims, and other refinery byproducts, were treated along with the antimony ore to furnish the lead required. All silver-bearing antimony ores were treated in the residue furnace, the sulfur, iron, and copper forming matte that carried part of the silver, the balance going into lead bullion. The antimony slag produced was sufficiently low in silver to warrant being smelted in the blast furnace to antimonial lead.
