The separation efficiency of the hot water digestion-flotation technique used for bitumen recovery from various domestic tar sands was evaluated. Bitumen viscosity was found to be the most important tar sand property in determining the success of the bitumen separation. Bitumen viscosity of the tar sand war controlled by changes in digestion temperature and/or changes in diluent (kerosene) addition. Complete and uniform dilution of the bitumen phase was achieved by providing a sufficient presoaking, or penetration time, for a given tar sand type. For all the tar sand samples tested, an excellent correlation was obtained between the coefficient of separation and the bitumen viscosity. To achieve a satisfactory coefficient of separation, it was found that the bitumen viscosity must be reduced below 1.5 Pa.s (16 P) at the temperature of digestion. This was the case regardless of the tar sand type, grade, or origin.

WHEN apparent resistivity data are taken with the symmetrical Wenner 4-electrode spread, a fixed center position is used and readings are taken for values of electrode separation. Basic data consist of apparent resistivity plotted against separation of adjacent electrodes . The interpreter attempts to infer geologic structure, such as the depth to discontinuities and the nature of subsurface earth materials. An earlier paper' described methods for interpreting resistivity data. All of these involve a severe assumption, namely that the earth in the region of interest consists of horizontal layers, electrically homogeneous and isotropic. The actual earth never satisfies this assumption exactly and may deviate from it so much that none of the above methods can be applied. Attempts in three directions have been made to modify the assumption so that it approaches known geologic complexity more closely. First, curves have been calculated for dipping discontinuities. Stern' and Aldredge hose a few widely separated dip angles. Trudu confined his attention to small dips. Berel'kovskiy and Zubanov computed gradient curves for widely separated dip angles. Unz as given the most complete solution, with a brief attempt to treat the three-layer case. Second, anisotropy can be taken into account. It seems geologically probable that layered materials have different vertical and horizontal conductivities. Cagniard, Maillet, and Pirson et up methods for finding an equivalent hypothetical isotropic medium. Standard interpretation methods can be applied to this, and the actual medium can then be deduced. Belluigi'" discounts the practical importance of anisotropy; Geneslay and Rouget do not agree with his conclusion. Third, the effect of variable resistivity in a layer can be considered. Keck and Colby" examine the mathematics of an exponential increase in a surface layer. Several authors, for example, Stevenson,'' consider a continuous variation of resistivity with depth. The present paper deals with a linear variation of resistivity in a surface layer. Geologically, surface variations should be expected. Unconsolidated materials such as glacial drift show marked irregularities over short distances. The effects of weathering change with depth. The moisture content of material above the water table may vary from a dry sand to a saturated clay, and both of these will be changed by rainfall. Figs. 1 to 6 present apparent resistivity curves to show the effect of a variable surface layer. In all cases resistivity varies linearly with depth down to a depth of one unit. Material beneath this depth has constant resistivity. Electrode separation is plotted in depth units. Insets on each figure show the corresponding cross-sections, plotting true resistivity against depth. To illustrate, consider curve A of Fig. 1. The true resistivity of material at the surface of the earth is taken as 0.4 units. Resistivity increases with depth, reaching a value of 1.0 at 0.5 depth units and 1.6 at 1.0 depth units. Below a depth of 1.0, all the material has very low resistivity (zero, for purposes of calculation). Curve A in the main part of Fig. 1 shows how apparent resistivity varies for this case as the electrode spacing is increased. To illustrate further, curve E of Fig. 4 corresponds to true resistivity of 1.2 units at the surface, 1.0 at a depth of 0.5 units, 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, and 1.5 for all depths greater than 1.0. Apparent resistivity curves have been plotted logarithmically so that the shape of the curves becomes independent of the units, giving the curves wide validity. A certain drift-covered area, for example, shows a gradual decrease of resistivity from 230 ohm-meters at the surface to 150 ohm-meters at the bedrock surface, 275 ft down; bedrock resistivity is 800 ohm-meters. Curve E of Fig. 5 indicates that true resistivity decreases from 1.2 units at the surface to 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, then increases abruptly to a constant value of 4.0 units. Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sand-blasting agent, as a premium grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. It is produced by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as a coproduct in titanium mineral production in Florida where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in June 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. In the Trail Ridge deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy minerals, the principal other heavy mineral constituents being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and the other silicate nonconductive heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total processing, 200 tons of raw sand yield 7 tons of heavy mineral concentrate from which about one ton of staurolite is recovered. This process yields staurolite concentrates of the characteristics given in Table 1. These concentrates are sold as three products with the size distribution of subrounded particles shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sand-blasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower unit cost abrasives, such as boiler slags and mineral aggregates, in applications where the abrasive is used only one time and is not recovered. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, with less material reportedly being required [ ]

Galvanic interaction between particulate chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and copper results in the rapid conversion of chalcopyrite to chalcocite. The effects of temperature, surface area, concentration of sulfuric acid and agitation were systematically evaluated. The kinetics were found to be controlled by a steady-state current flow controlled by the effective anodic and cathodic surface areas involved in the galvanic couple. The experimental activation energy was 11.5 and stoichiometric data and reaction products have been characterized. The overall kinetic system has been evaluated based upon an electrochemical model.

THE first difficulty mentioned is that in some instances two or more beds of coal separated by sandstone or slate rocks of considerable thickness in one part of a basin, are found running together in another part. Of course, we may happen to strike first the part of the basin where there is but a single seam, and in this case the bed would appear to divide into two or more branches within a short distance. Such cases are not rare in the anthracite coal-fields. I would suggest as an explanation of this phenomenon the gradual sinking of the peat-marsh-the embryo coal-bed-on one side, and the moving forward of the marsh, so that on one part of the bed the formation of peat would still be progressing, while another part, being under water, would be covered with mud and sand. Thus we have different portions of the same bed of different ages. Now if the sinking of the marsh be stopped for a time, the bed will become thicker in the portions left exposed, and if the sinking now changes in direction, so that the part that had previously gone down com¬mences to rise, we should have the phenomenon of a bed, continuous throughout, with one portion overlying another, and separated from it by rock strata. These are exactly the conditions observed in splitting beds. While one side of the lake is sinking, and the peat-marsh moving on in that direction, the other side may be rising,

THE improvement, in the quality of cast iron by means of alloy additions has been a metallurgical accomplishment of recent years. Work in this field has shown that chromium is one of the most effective of such additions but, in general, the influence of chromium has been studied only in. connection with other alloying additions, with irons other than foundry irons, or with relatively high percentages of chromium. The present study was initiated for the purpose of determining the influence of small additions of chromium (0.25 to 1.00 per cent) on the quality and resultant properties of cast irons of various foundry grades. The effect of small chromium additions on cast iron was investigated with particular reference to casting characteristics, hardness vs. section, strength, machinability, heat resistance and structure. MATERIAL TESTED Three separate types of cast iron were investigated as to the effect of small chromium additions. The first series of these irons was prepared from remelted foundry cast iron at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, and the other two -series consisted of cupola melts made under usual operating conditions. The first series was made by melting 30-lb. charges of foundry scrap iron containing - 2.86 per cent carbon, 2.72 silicon, 0.50 manganese, 0.062 sulfur and 0.794 phosphorus in a carbon resistance furnace. The chromium was added as high-carbon ferrochrome just before pouring. The irons were cast at approximately 1250° C. (2282° F.). The analysis and physical properties of these irons are given in Table 1, test 1. The second set of cast irons was made in a cupola in accordance with normal practice, 'the charge containing approximately 42 per cent steel scrap and the chromium additions being made to the ladle. Analysis and tests of these heats are shown In Table 1, test 2. A small amount of copper was present in heat C of this series.

THE 139th meeting of the Institute will be held Feb. 17-20, in the Engineering Societies Building, New York. The annual business meeting will be held on Feb. 18 at 10 a. m., and no technical sessions will be scheduled at that time, so that all members may participate in the election of officers, hear the presentation of the annual reports of officers and committees and discuss any matter which they may care to bring up at that time. The annual dinner will be held at the Conlmodore Hotel on the evening of Feb. 20, and the usual good time is promised. Arrangements for this and other social features of the meeting are, as usual, in hands of the New York Sec- tion, of which the chairman this year, Ralph M. Roosevelt, has a well-established reputation earned as president of the Zinc Institute, as host.

The Institute maintains a dual relationship with students: (1) an indi¬vidual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Stu¬dent Chapters. 1. The conditions of Student Associateship are set forth in Section 9, Article I, of the Bylaws of the Institute (see page 57 and following pages). During 1934, sundry amendments were made for the purpose of improving the student relationship. Post-graduate students are now eligible; and associateship can be maintained, with the payment of the regular dues of $2 per year, for 18 months following graduation in June. With his regular dues, each Student Associate is entitled to receive during the year his choice of Mining and Metallurgy, Metals Technology, Mining Technology, Petroleum Technology, or two "classes" of Technical Publications; and on payment of an additional fifty cents he can have both Mining and Metallurgy and any one of the others. He is accorded the privilege of getting special publications such as "The Porphyry Coppers" and "Ore Deposits of the Western States" at the reduced prices applicable to Members; he has the privileges of the Engineering Societies Employment Service and the Engineering Societies Library; and he is not only invited but urged to attend all meetings of the Institute, its Divisions and its Local Sections. The Institute wants to extend the hand of professional fellowship to students following mineral industries curricula.

Conventional methods of calculating the duty cycle of a mine hoist are awkward in that a number of items must be remembered or that they must be collected together in order to have all the calculated data in one place. A more convenient way is to tabulate all factors involved, permitting a ready evaluation of the problem. An example illustrates the convenience of such a table for either of two types of drums, cylindrical and conical. Assume the following conditions: The hoisting depth is 600 ft. Balanced hoisting is used. The weights of empty skip and ore are 6000 lbs and 12,000 lbs, respectively. Production is 3600 tons per shift. Net hoisting time per shift is six hours with a rest period of eight sec, top and bottom, per trip. Acceleration and retardation are each six sec. The diameter of the drum is seven ft; its face is four ft. The sheave has the same diameter. The equivalent effective weight of the drum reduced to rope center is 15,400 lbs. The weight of each sheave is 2100 lbs. 1 The rope is 1 1/4-in. improved plow steel weighing 2.50 lb per ft.

1. INTRODUCTION The Bond method(1.2) for sizing tumbling ball mills has been used successfully for many years. The primary purpose of the Bond calculation is to predict the mill size and mill power to give a desired capacity (Q tph) from a wet overflow ball mill in normal closed circuit operated with a circulation ratio of 2.5. The input to the calculation is the make-up feed size characterized by the 80%-passing size in micrometers (xG), the desired circuit product size characterized by the 80%-passing size (xQ), and an empirical grindability number (the standard Bond Work Index) determined by a standard test. A series of empirical correcting factors(2) are used to convert the results to open-circuit or dry grinding in grate discharge mills. The Bond method has two major engineering advantages: (i) it is very simple; (ii) experience has shown that it works for many circumstances, as a reasonable approximation, because it is based on direct conversion of test data to results measured on industrial mills. There are four main disadvantages of the Bond method. First, there will be a range of error for any specific mill and material and set of operating conditions because the method does not explicitly include several variables which are obviously important: (i) recycle ratio and classifier efficiency (ii) mixture of ball sizes in the mill (iii) variations of residence time distributions with mill geometry and slurry density (iv) lifter design (v) slurry rheology (vi) different underfilling or overfilling of the mill as flow rate is changed. Second, the Bond method explicitly assumes that specific grinding energy E is not a function of ball load, whereas industrial practice and laboratory tests(3) show that the specific grinding energy (to go from a specified feed to a specified product) is less for lower ball loadings than the ball loading for maximum mill capacity. Third, the method uses only the 80% passing size of circuit feed and product to characterize the size distributions, whereas mill capacity in general must depend on the shape of the feed size distribution and the product size distribution. his paper discusses how the following formation characteristics can be determined mathematically from drill-stem test pressure charts: true formation pressures, effective permeability of the entire section tested, well productivities, wellbore damage, and possible detection of barriers (faults, pinchouts, etc.). This paper also presents a practical method for im-mediate determination of eflective permeability and well-bore damage from successful double shut-in pressure tests. A list of recommendations for improving the reliability of drill-stem rest pressures is also presented. INTRODUCTION A drill-stem test is a temporary completion designed to sample the formation fluid and to establish the possibility of commercial production. Early pressure recording devices were used merely to verify proper operation of the testing tool. Until recently the accuracy of the pressure gauges has been insufficient for any reliable quantitative use of the recorded pressures. In view of the need for more reliable formation evaluation and as a result of the recent interest in exploration work employing the concept of hydrodynamic en-trapment,1,2,3,4 better pressure recording gauges are now in use. These devices can record pressure within 1 per cent above 1,000 psig and can detect differential pressures as low as 1/2 psig. In addition to formation pressure, several other reservoir characteristics can be determined from DST charts; namely, well productivity, formation permeability, wellbore damage, and the possible existence of bar- riers (faults, pinchouts, changes in permeability, etc.). This paper presents a practical method to interpret DST pressure charts for formation pressures and many other reservoir properties, a method that has been developed in analyzing approximately 4,000 DST charts during the last five years. The techniques used are a composite of published articles on drill-stem testing5,6, together with well-known pressure build-up analysis methods. THEORY It has been shown7,8 that the following equation may be used for analysis of pressure build-up curves: Po - Pw = 162.6 qu/kh log ( to + ?/?) .....(1) When this equation is applied to the curves obtained in drill-stem testing, the assumptions and boundary con-ditions are more nearly realized than in conventional flow and build-up tests on producing wells. Zak and Griffen9 have recently discussed in detail the use of this equation in analyzing DST charts. One of the problems with DST curves is the lack of reservoir data for precise analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop empirical rules and field methods for analyzing DST charts in quantity. For this reason, the empirical methods presented in this paper have been developed, and their derivation is found in Appendices A and B. METHOD USED FOR ACCURATE READING OF DRILL-STEM TEST CHARTS In order to apply the pressure build-up theory to DST charts, it is necessary to obtain a digitized expression for the pressure and time data recorded by the pressure gauge. After a few percent strain, dislocations in disordered Cu3Au are arranged in groups in ulell-defined slip planes, which contrasts with the more or less random distribution of dislocations in the corresponding ordered alloy. Unusually long and straigkt dislocation segments observed in the ordered alloy are interpreted in terms of cross slip of screw dislocations from their slip planes into cube planes. It is proposed that cross slip, and also dislocation reactions of the Lomer type, play an important role in work hardening of the ordered alloy. ACCORDING to to dislocations in the disordered lattice are only partial dislocations in the corresponding super lattice, so that in the super-lattice dislocations must occur as pairs, with each pair connected by a ribbon of antiphase boundary. Recently, striking confirmation of the theory was obtained by Marcinkowski, Brown, and Fisher3j4 in a study of dislocation configurations in thin foils of the Cu3Au alloy by transmission electron microscopy. In the present investigation, the observations made by these workers have largely been confirmed. Moreover, it has been found that dislocations in the plastically deformed ordered alloys are often unusually long and straight. This paper is mainly concerned with these new observations. A tentative explanation is offered in terms of cross slip of dislocations in the ordered alloys. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS An alloy close to the stoichiometric composition Cu3Au was prepared by melting together high-purity copper and gold (99.995 pct) under vacuum in a graphite mold. The resulting ingot was rolled down and cut into strips 1 1/2 by 1/8 by 0.005 in. in thickness. All strips were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and cooled to 500'~. A few of the strips were quenched from ~OO'C, while the remainder were slowly cooled in the temperature range 400" to 150°C at intervals of a few degrees every 24 hr to produce a high degree of order. After this annealing treatment the average grain size of the material was about 0.1 mm. Material in different states of order was obtained by reannealing fully ordered material at temperatures below the critical temperature: followed by quenching. The equilibrium degree of order attained at a particular reannealing temperature was obtained from the paper by Keating and warren.' A simple hand-operated tensile jig was used to give the strips the required amounts of plastic strain. Following straining, a number of specimens were cut from each strip by means of an electrolytic cutting device.= Finally, each specimen was thinned electrolytically using the polishing procedure described by Bakish and Robertson,7 and these thin sections were examined in the Philips EM-100B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS Antiphase boundaries. The average domain size in the ordered alloys was found by direct observation to be about 0.25 p. Also, it was observed that the grown-in configuration of antiphase boundaries was changed little by plastic deformation, at least up to 6 pct strain. Fig. 1 shows an electron micrograph of a thin foil of partially ordered alloy (S - 0.8) after 3 pct strain. The micrograph shows a few dislocation pairs and a somewhat crystallo-graphic network of antiphase boundaries. A series of rare earth cobalt compounds of the composition RCoa (r = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Ev, Tm, Lu) has been prepared. The compounds crystallize in space gvoup R3m and are isomorphous with PuNi3. Except for CeCo3 and PrCo, the series shows decreasing- values of a. and co. The relalively small parameters of CeCo, and PrCo, are explained by valencies of cerium or praseodymium which exceed the usual rare earth valency of three. The structure of the compounds is discussed as in-fillings of kagome nets in direct and staggered superposition. In the course of a systematic investigation of rare earth cobalt compounds"2 and their magnetic properties,, a series of alloys corresponding to the formula Rco3 has been prepared. The investigation of the Rco3 series was stimulated by our investigation of the yttrium cobalt system2 as well as by reports in the literature: Smith and Hansen4 reported the structure of YcO3 and Van vucht5 that of GdCo3; ceco3,6 Gdco3,7 and DyCo3 7 have been found to be single-phase during phase diagram studies. It was the purpose of this work to report crystallographic data on the entire Rco3 series and to interpret the structure of these compounds on the basis of general principles as discussed by Frank and Kasper.8 At the time this work was terminated, it was learned that a similar investigation has been carried out independently by Bertaut, Lemaire, and schweizer.9 Except for CeCo3 (ao = 4.952, co = 24.73') and NdCo3 (a0 = 5.067, co = 24.76') data of this work are in satisfactory agreement with their investigation. In preparing the curves given on this chart, a typical blast-furnace top gas having the following composition by weight was assumed: Per Cent. C02 21.00 CO 24.00 Hz 0.25 CH4 0:25 N2 54.50 For any given top-gas temperature, Curves A, B, C, D, and E indicate in British thermal units the sensible heat lost in cooling the top gas to 60° F. by wet-cleaning methods. Top-gas temperatures are plotted as abscissae, sensible heats above 60° F. in British thermal units are plotted as ordinates, and separate curves are drawn for top gases carrying various amounts of moisture. For any given stove exit-gas temperature, curves A1,-B1, C1, D1, and E1, indicate in British thermal units the sensible heat carried out of the stoves by the moisture which is left in the top gas when it is dry-cleaned and enters the stoves hot. This moisture is removed when the gases are wet-cleaned and the sensible heat which it carries out of the stoves is therefore saved. As before, separate curves are drawn for top gases carrying various amounts of moisture. The curves in Fig. 1, therefore, indicate graphically how much more sensible heat is conserved by cleaning the top gases by the dry-hot method than is conserved by cleaning the top. gases by a cold-wet method and thus removing the greater part of the moisture carried by them. They also show of how little moment it is from a heat conservation standpoint whether or not the moisture carried by the top gases is removed before they enter the stoves. That wet cleaning secures the removal of this moisture and is thus to be recommended from a heat conservation standpoint is an argument often advanced by advocates of wet cleaning. The curves of Fig. 1 show how fallacious such an argument is.

During recent years, expanded perlite has found extensive use in a wide variety of commercial applications. Specifications for a range of uses call for aggregates having different physical properties and requiring various types of processing. The mitre scopic examination of expanded aggregates in specially prepared thin sections has yielded important information regarding internal structure and can be a useful aid in evaluation of the product. Perlite is an acid volcanic glass containing from 2 to 5 pct combined water. When crushed and rapidly raised to a temperature of 1500° to 2100°F, the volatilization of the combined water, coincident with softening of the siliceous glass, causes the particles to expand or pop. Expansion of perlite to densities as low as 1-1/2 lb per cu ft has been achieved, although the normal range is from about 2.5 to 10 lb per cu ft. Low-density materials of this nature have found application in cryogenic insula- tions, insulating tile and board, plaster and lightweight concrete, soil conditioners, filter aids after comminution, and a host of other uses. The expansion of perlite may be controlled by a number of variables. Some of these are ore milling, furnace design, expanding temperature, use of preheating techniques, screen size distribution, and feed rate of the crude. For the specific intended uses, the art of perlite expanding has developed to the point that much is known about the effect of these variables on the end product. The requirements, however, for an aggregate to be used in plaster are different from those for an expanded perlite to be used in lightweight concrete or for cryogenics. In the study of perlite, many practical questions remain unanswered. One of the most important is, "why do some perlites make hard aggregates while others cannot resist crushing or compaction?" The usual tests and methods for evaluation of nonmetallic substances have been tried and have contributed their share to our knowledge. But chemical analyses, compaction resistance tests, screen analysis, etc., will reveal only a limited amount of information. The answers to these complex questions may well be found in an examination of the intemal structure of the expanded particle. Such questions and the ex-

The Institute maintains a dual reltionship with students: (1) an individual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Student Chapters. 1. The conditions of Student Associateship are set forth in Section 9, Article I, of the Bylaws of the Institute (see page 60 and following pages). During 1934, sundry amendments were made for the purpose of improving the student relationship. Post-graduate students are now eligible; and associateship can be maintained, with the payment of the regular dues of $2 per year, for 18 months following graduation in. June. With his regular dues, each Student Associate is entitled to receive during the year his choice of MINING AND METALLURGY, METALS TECHNOLOGY, MINING TECHNOLOGY, PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY, or two "classes" of Technical Publications; and on payment of an additional fifty cents. he can have both MINING AND METALLURGY and any one of the others. He is accorded the privilege of getting special publications such as "The Porphyry Coppers" and "Elements of the Petroleum Industry" at the reduced prices applicable to Members; he has the privileges of the Engineering Societies Personnel Service and the Engineering Societies Library; and he is not only invited but urged to attend all meetings of the Institute, its Divisions and its Local Sections. The Institute wants, to extend the hand of professional fellowship to students following mineral industries curricula.

In their account of chromium, Roscoe and Schorlemmer (Treatise on Chemistry, London, 1879) state that "In 1762 Lehmann, in a letter to Buffon, de nova minerœ plumbi specie crystalline rubra, described a new mineral from Siberia, now termed crocoisite." In 1786 Lehmann analyzed it (Nicholson's Jour., Dee., 1798) and found that it contained chiefly lead, and that the " mineralizers " were arsenic and sulphur. It was next examined in 1189 by Macquart and Vauquelin, who stated that it contained an intimate mixture of iron, alumina, and lead peroxide. The account of their work was published over the name of Macquart. Vauquelin (Louis-Nicolas) was a Norman peasant, who had studied in the village school, and at the age of fourteen was a laboratory-boy in a pharmacy at Rouen. Later, he found his way to Paris, and in 1789 was assistant to Fourcroy, a pharmacist and a teacher of note. It was here that he met Macquart, with whom he did the work on Siberian red lead, and at this time his friend Cheradame taught him his Latin.
