THE present note, which was given in the form of a Research in Progress item,' traces the origin of secondary recrystallization grains produced on annealing a cold rolled bicrystal specimen. The investigation began with the realization that a recently acquired conception for the origin of secondary grains produced on annealing cold rolled single-crystal specimens might require modifications for the case of polycrystalline materials. The stated conception2,3 begins with several conditions to be met by primary recrystallization: 1—a primary re-crystallization structure to consist of many small primaries and relatively few large primaries (diam- eters two or three times the average); 2—a primary recrystallization texture to consist of one strong preferred orientation or component and one or more weak components; and 3—a primary recrystalliza-tion structure-texture combination with some of the large primaries belonging to the weak components of the texture. THE Colorado Plateau uranium province is in a mining boom rivaling the most colorful days of the early West. The application of scientific skills and the use of modern and novel mechanical equipment, however, is unique. No metal has ever received such concentrated effort from geologists and mining engineers. Moreover, no other metal has had the variety of tools available for finding and mining ores. Radiation detection equipment, bull- dozers, truck-mounted wagon and core drills, jeeps, airplanes, helicopters, tractor loaders, self -propelled 3-wheeled dump cars, front-end loaders and fleets of modern trucks are some of the present-day tools of the uranium prospector and miner. Because uranium is so vital to our national defense, the Atomic Energy Commission has offered many incentives for its mining. Through a series of circulars, the AEC has established base price schedules and various incentive payments. The incentive payments for acceptable ores from domestic mines are: (1) a guaranteed base price of $3.50 per Ib for ores assaying 0.20 pct U3O8 and more; (2) premiums based on grades above 0.20 pct U3O8 as for example, ores assaying above 0.50 pct U3O8 receive $1.00 per lb premium; (3) a development allowance of 506 per Ib of U3O8 contained in ores assaying over 0.10 pct U3O8 (4) an ore haulage allowance of 64 a ton mile for a maximum of 100 miles; and (5) an initial production bonus which may amount to as much as $35,000 in addition to all other payments. The producers have been guaranteed this policy until Feb. 28, 1957. The other four will continue until April 1962.

A levitation zone melter is described which has the necessary characteristics for processing metals of controlled purity. No crucible is required; control of the solidification variables is stable; the environment of the charge is chenzically controlled. Rotation of the solidifying interface and mixing in the liquid by the magnetohydrodynamic stirring produce an eight-fold increase in freezing velocity over former melting units with better resulting solute redistributions. The smooth appearance of processed specimens, resistivity ratios as a hnction of position, as well as a segregation curve, are presented as evidence of smooth continuous solute fransport over distances in excess of ten zone lengths. THE difficulties of the floating zone-purification of higher density metals in large quantities under conditions of lowered surface tension are well known and have hindered fundamental research programs for some time. The inordinate amount of time required to obtain a small reproducible yield of high-quality metal has excluded the use of such material for many important material research programs. However, with the use of controllable induction levitation forces' to accomplish stable liquid zones with nearly flat solidifying interfaces, and with good physical and chemical control of the processes involved, these difficulties can be overcome. A zone melter that is to be used for both high-purity and controlled composition work in metal systems must have the following three characteristics: 1) The process must avoid the use of containers. 2) Physical control of the solid-liquid interface and of the mixing within the liquid phase must be stable. 3) The chemical environment of the melt chamber must be controllable. A description of an apparatus that accomplishes these objectives follows.* APPARATUS One of the basic features that is necessary for good process control of large sections is that the charge, the coil, and the motion mechanisms be within the same chamber. This arrangement permits a close coupling between the work coil and the load, which then provides a good flexibility for adjustments of coil dimensions, for controlling the amount of levitation needed for stable operation at a given power level. An overall view of the melter is shown, with the melt-chamber door open, in Fig. 1. The radiation shields surrounding the single-turn induction coil are of water-cooled copper. The chamber is stainless steel, as are most of the components within the chamber. The control panel for the scanner is located at the immediate lower right of the melt chamber. This panel controls the operation of the scanner. The operations controlled are the interface rotation rate, the stretch-squeeze or diameter control, the up and down scanning speeds, and the induction power. All of the drive motors are constant-torque variable-speed motors. The scanning speeds are set with precision helipots and continuously observed with the voltmeter on the control panel and checked with a mechanical indicator within the melt chamber. The rotation rate is also set with a precision helipot. The up-scanning speeds are 2 to 300 in. per hr.

The Jetter and borie' teclznique of determining textures using a spherical specimen has been applied to tlze study of compression-rolled beryllium sheet. Snzall spheres the order of 1 mm in diam cut from the beryllium sheet were autotnatically rotated about tz41o axes using the G.E. single-crystal goniometer. Quantitative pole figures were obtained without tke need to apply absorption corrections. Compression-rolled beryllium exhibited peak intensities ,for (0002) planes of positions tilted 10 deg to the rolling plane and a near random distribution of (1010) planes about the nornal to the rolling plane. TECHNIQUES for determining textures of rolled sheet material are amply described in the literature. The techniques are found to be variations of two basic methods. One due to Decker, Asp, and arker, referred to as the transmission method, utilizes a thin-sheet specimen in which the X-ray beam enters the specimen from one side and the intensity of the beam which emerges from the opposite side is measured. The second method due to chulz,3 referred to as the reflection method, utilizes a thick specimen and the intensity of the beam emerging from the same side is measured. The two rotations of the specimen in the beam are designated a and 8. In order to completely determine the texture of sheet material, it is generally necessary to use a combination of the two methods. The calculations involved in correcting the raw X-ray data for absorption effects and the combining of the data obtained by the two methods are very laborious and time consuming. To avoid the intensity corrections which arise as a result of the changing diffraction volume and path length within the sample other methods have been proposed. The Norton method utilizes a cylindrically shaped specimen cut from the sheet material. Since the rods have rotational symmetry, the absorption correction is constant for rotations about the sheet texture. Jetter and Borie' employed a spherical specimen to analyze the fiber texture of extruded aluminum rods. The spheres were rotated rapidly about the fiber axis to include a large number of grains in the X-ray beam and changes in intensity with respect to tilts of the fiber axis were measured. The absorption correction was constant for all angles and was neglected. The Jetter and Borie' technique finds excellent ap- plication to very fine-grained low-absorbing metals in which the entire sphere volume can contribute to the diffraction volume. In the case of low-absorbing metals, however, serious limitations on specimen thickness occur as demonstrated by Braggs due to de-focussing effects. Peak shifts may occur which negate the assumption that integrated intensities are proportional to peak intensities. These limitations in sphere size to the order of 0.5 to 1 mm for beryllium require that the grain size be sufficiently small to include a large enough statistical sample. The present paper describes the application of spherical specimens less than 1 mm in diam to the quantitative determination of pole figures for compression-rolled beryllium sheet having a grain size the order of 10 p. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Specimen Preparation. Two techniques for spark-machining beryllium spheres were tried. One involved the use of a hollow cylinder as a cutting tool. The tool was fed into the rotating cylindrical specimen as shown in Fig. l(a). The hollow cylinder was carefully aligned such that the axis of the cylinder and the axis of the specimen lay in the same plane and were 90 deg to each other. As the hollow cylinder was fed into the rotating cylindrical specimen, a spherical shape was formed as shown in Fig. 1. Alignment was very critical. Slight misalignment resulted in the formation of a barrel-shaped specimen instead of a sphere. A second technique involved the use of a cutting wheel shaped as shown in Fig. 2 with a groove of the desired radius. A section of the sheet specimen was first turned into a cylinder on the left part of the cutting wheel. It was then shifted to the right and a spherical specimen was turned as shown in Fig. 2. The axis of the cylinder lay in the plane of the sheet. Flats corresponding to the rolling plane of the sheet were used to grip the specimen during the machining operation and these served to identify the rolling plane of the sphere. 2) Rotation of Spec=. The spherical specimen is shown mounted on the G.E. single-crystal goniometer in Fig. 3. The knob A of the goniometer shown in Fig. 3 rotates the specimen about the pedestal axis. These angles have been designated as @ angles. The knob B rotates the specimen about an axis perpendicular to the pedestal axis. These angles have been designated as p angles. A device was made to automatically drive the single-crystal goniometer by means of two flexible shafts connected to the A and B knobs as shown in Fig. 3. The motor system was designed to rotate the knob A, thus rotating the specimen through angles of $I while the B knob remained stationary. After one complete

DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP'';4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. The resulting structure, presented in Fig. 1

A galvanic cell, using as electrolyte a fused salt solution of calcium carbide and as electrodes carbon and a Fe-C alloy of known composition, has been set up to study the thermodynamics of Fe-C alloys in the temperature rmzge 800" to 1000°C. Time independence and reproducibility of the cell electromotive force were taken as evidence of the reversible behavior of the cell. Carbon was believed to be present in the electrolyte as the so-called acetylide ion, C;-. The plots of the cell electromotive force us temperature for a specific alloy composition were straight lines within the limits of experimental error. The average Partial molar enthalpy of carbon in iron relative to pure carbon was found to be +10,610 i 93 cal per g-atom C. Thermodynamic analysis of the data has led to the following equation for the carbon activity, ac, based upon pure carbon as the standard state: In ac = In Zc + 10,560/RT + (10.02 + 77O/T)ZC - 2.350 where ZC is the lattice ratio [nC/(nF, - nc )] and T is the absolute temperature. This equalion gives carbon activity values generally slightly lower than those from gas equilibration studies reported in the literature. METAL LOGRAPHIC examination of a polished cross section of the steel anode used in the electrolysis studies of fused salt solutions of calcium carbide by Morris and Harry revealed extensive carburization of the steel by the electrodeposited carbon. This carburization was reflected in the variability, with time, of the applied potential to the electrolysis cell, necessary to maintain a constant current density at the electrodes. This observation suggested the setting up of a galvanic cell of the "alloy concentration" type to study the thermodynamics of some metal-carbon alloys. Cells of this general type have been widely used for the study of alloy systems.2 In view of the availability of published data in respect of the austenite phase of the Fe-C system, it was decided to carry out measurements upon these alloys before proceeding to studies of less well documented systems. The galvanic cell may be written: where [C] is carbon dissolved in iron. The electrolyte was a fused salt solution of calcium carbide, containing some 5 to 10 mol pct of carbide. The cell reaction is believed to be: C(s)-[CI [I1 Carbon forms an interstitial solid solution in iron, with the atoms located in the octahedral interstices. In the fcc crystal structure of austenite there is one octahedral interstice per iron atom. Thus, the lattice ratio, ZC, shown by Gurney3 to be the fundamental concentration parameter in the context of interstitial solutions, is given by: where nc and nFe are the number of carbon and iron atoms, respectively. chipman4 has recently shown empirically the advantages of using this concentration parameter instead of the more usual atom ratio or atom fraction. The cell electromotive force, E, assuming reversible behavior, is related to the carbon potential or the partial molar free energy of carbon in the solid solution relative to pure carbon at the same temperature and pressure, GP at the composition ZC, by the equation: where z is the carbide ion valency and F is the Faraday constant. An activity of carbon, ac, in the solution relative to the value of unity assigned to pure carbon, and an activity coefficient, qC , are defined such that: where R is the gas constant and T the absolute temperature. GF is further related to the relative partial molar enthalpy Hm, and the temperature coefficient of the cell electromotive force, (aE/aT)Zc, by the equations: Measurement of the cell electromotive force thus enables calculation of the relative partial molar thermodynamic properties of carbon in iron, if z is known. At E = 0, the solid solution is in equilibrium with pure carbon. More convenient for many purposes is the standard state based upon the infinitely dilute solution, Henry's law. The relationship between the activity coefficient of carbon based upon this standard state, and that based upon the pure carbon standard state, qC , may be obtained by considering the free energy of transfer of carbon from the latter standard state to the former. JAN. 17-In what appears to be a general spirit of post-Christmas emotional malaise, most adult Americans have bidden farewell to the Forties and turned with no perceptible enthusiasm toward the Fifties. The dying decade had started amid a phoney war which verged on the romantic, stirred the pulse with excitement and seemed far away. A phoney peace dominates the new decade. The romance is no longer there. Nor is the excitement. Nor is the distance. While most of the world preferred to be chronologically correct and hold off for another year before celebrating the demise of the first half of the twentieth century, the United States with true competitive enterprise and a great whirl of words scurried into the second half a year early. This undue haste might perhaps have been dictated unconsciously by a yearning for the pattern of history to be repeated. For many centuries, ever since Roman times, the second half of most centuries tended to be far more tranquil than the first half. In Washington, Mr. Truman got on both sides of the mid-century line with all the aplomb of a good politician. He told Congress early in January that "the state of the Union continues to be good," as it nears "the midpoint of the twentieth century." Later he spoke of moving forward into the second half of the century. He promised an infinitely better life for everyone, whichever side of the mid-century line, and reaffirmed his prescription toward that end: assistance for small businesses; more houses for the middle-income groups; tougher anti-monopoly laws, retention of rent controls; development of natural resources; better insurance against the hazards of old age, idleness and unemployment; better medical care and education, civil rights legislation; new labor relations law and production payments to support farm incomes. All this was to be coupled with suggestions on how to balance the budget. The bloody and confusing 1940's had brought to most men's minds a fear of the future such as they had not known for centuries, and Mr. Truman's objective is to temper that fear. Only time will tell whether the terminal point of such a philosophy would or would not belie the old English proverb citing inability to both eat and have a cake. Brave words to the contrary, the national budget persisted in sliding off into the red. The smell of further inflation was equally persistent. And just to impart a little more zip to the trend, the American Federation of Labor announced its intention of seeking "substantial" and "large" wage increases this year. The AFL forewarns of a business slump after June and a 10¢ an hr wage in¬crease for each worker "will be enough to reverse the prospective downward trend and start a rise." Thus it goes-"the way to halt a drop in demand for labor is to raise the price of labor." Elsewhere in the harassed world, beleagured individualists in New York achieved a local triumph of sorts for one of the freedoms denied by the Soviet and Nazi systems-the right of escape, some escape at least, from the servitude to decibels. Grand Central Station weakened perceptibly at Christmas on its 5-min commercials and bore down heavily on "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing," and on New Year's Day capitulated entirely by abandoning the broadcasting of canned music and slugs of advertising slogans. In Europe, M. Bidault's Assembly majority fell away and newspaper accounts of the incredible monstrosities of political trials beyond the iron curtain were supplanted by headlines marking the birth of Princess Yasmin. The latter was surrounded by Byzantine splendor but otherwise showed no apparent deviation from the accepted norm. In Western Germany, Dr. Adenauer began to speak up more boldly, and the whole fabric of Allied policy towards the defeated enemy further dossolved under the impact of rivalry with the Russians. In the Far East both the Americans and British seem somewhat embarrassed by Chiang Kai-shek's refusal to lie down. Dual thinking regarding the "squalid and useless struggle in the China seas" is such that newspapers give sympathetic accounts to an American ship running supplies to the Communists at Shanghai while calling for help for the recognized Chinese government in Formosa. And with Britain recognizing Communist China they may well have to team up with Russia against the United States to kick the Chinese representative off the UNO Security Council, the Far Eastern Commission and the Allied Council in Tokyo. Far Eastern policy has never been a bipartisan matter and as General Chiang retreated to his final redoubts in Formosa and Hainan, a number of Republicans pecked away at Administration lassitude. Senator Smith advocated the occupation of Formosa and Messrs. Hoover and Taft asked for use of the Navy. Mr. Acheson has stood firm, however, against military aid. None the less, a study will be made of the Generalissimo's chances. Mr. Truman has a private purse of $75 million for the Far East and some $94 million in frozen ECA funds. Mr. Truman will likely trade some of this money for support of new Marshall plan appropriations, always mindful, of course, of Mr. Acheson's plan to drive a wedge between the Chinese and Moscow, and his wish to avoid any revival of imperialist nightmares throughout the Orient. Mr. Acheson is very convinced that the victories of Communism in China will be short-lived and South Asia will not fall

Vermiculite is the name used for those micaceous minerals with a ferromagnesian aluminum silicate composition and the unique property of exfoliating to a low density material when heated. Commercially, the exfoliated products are also called vermiculite, or more exactly, expanded vermiculite. In its exfoliated state, vermiculite serves many markets, chief among them construction, agriculture, horticulture, and general industry. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in a natural state, has the characteristic mica habit, splits readily into thin laminae, flexible but inelastic. In a mineralogical sense, vermiculite is a hydrated silicate with no exact chemical composition. The structural formula for a macroscopic, trioctahedral vermiculite may be written: [ ] The structure of vermiculite is basically that of a talc, and it could be regarded as a trioctahedral member of the smectite group. Macroscopically, vermiculite displays the prominent monoclinic crystal faces that are commonly marked by lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness varies from 1.5 to 2.8 or more; specific gravities are between 2.1 and 2.8; color is amber, bronze, brown, dark green, or black. When heated quickly to an elevated tempera¬ture, vermiculite expands by exfoliating at right angles to the cleavage, into wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is derived from the Latin `vermiculare,' to breed worms). This characteristic of expansion, the basis for commercial use of the mineral, is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercial grades is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may expand as much as 30 times. All expansion occurs at right angles to the basal cleavage. Vermiculite may also be expanded by a number of chemical processes such as soaking in hydrogen peroxide, weak acids, and other electrolytes. There is a color change during expansion that is dependent upon the composition of the vermiculite and furnace atmospheres. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces dull gray colors. The iron is generally not oxidized during chemical expansion. The exfoliation of the vermiculite crystal results in large pores being formed between groups of platelets. Thus exfoliation can make available a large increase in void volume without significantly changing the surface area of the platelets. This characteristic is important in the chemical carrier applications of vermiculite. Although there has been much research on the chemical and structural composition of vermiculite, an exact formula and composition cannot be described. This is to be expected since vermiculite derives from a number of different mineral sources. As has been proposed, vermiculite is not a single mineral species, but families of related minerals. Additionally, commercial interest in the end product has resulted in the name vermiculite being applied to the very voluminous, bloated products from calcination of baueritized (bleached) phlogopite. This has also resulted in many names for the specific vermiculite found in a particular deposit. All of this difficulty arises from the nature of its crystal chemistry. Consequently, vermiculite is now thought of as several related variable mineral series rather than a group of related species. The vermiculites have a common silica tetrahedral sheet structure with separating ions. It is now generally agreed that vermiculites must also be regarded as true clay minerals. IN 1955, before planning an accelerated stripping program, Chino Mines Div. began an engineering study to improve data for estimating truck haulage costs for any future haulage layout. The study aimed to develop: 1) significant unit costs, 2) a method of estimating travel time from which truck needs and future stripping rate could be determined, and 3) yardsticks of performance to measure haulage efficiencies. It was suggested that to provide significant unit costs, expense accounts should offer management two types of cost control information-unit cost yardsticks with which monthly unit costs could be compared and unit costs for estimating future expenses for any haulage layout.

Gas dehydration plays an important part in the production of natural gas. Effective dehydration prevents formation of gas hydrates and the accumulation of water in transmission Systems,2,6,7 insuring uninterrupted gas deliveries at maximum efficiency under the most adverse weather conditions. At the present time, most gas companies require a maximum water vapor content of seven lb per million standard cu ft of gas. so that virtually all gas tendered for sale must he dehydrated to meet this specification. For a number of years it has been common practice to produce gas and gather it at a common point for dehydration prior to discharge into the transmission system.1,3,11,16,17 However, higher transmission line pressures, long gathering lines and relatively low ground temperatures have made it necessary to dehydrate gas at. or near. individual. wells in order to gather gas from a number of newly developed fields without unusual difficulty. Where gas has been dehydrated at pressures ranging from 300 to 800 psi in the past. future trends indicate that these processes may be operated at pressures as high as 2,000 psi. Economics of gas dehydration are of great importance, partitularly where facilities must he provided to process relatively small quantities of gas, such as the production from an individual well. Although the adsorption of water vapor from gas on a granular sorbent material such as activated bauxite, activated alumina, or one of the alumina-silica gels is highly effective and produces virtually "bone dry" gas, the cost of a small unit of this type is substantially greater than that of an absorption process which, through proper selection of the absorbing liquid, will dehydrate the gas sufficiently to meet pipe line specifications. For this reason, a great deal of emphacis has been placed on the development of small, inexpensive dehydration units8,24 and the search for more effective absorb. ent liquids has been intensified. A wide variety of methods for dehydrating gas are known' and many of these have been used in industry. Earlier applications of the absorption process employed concentrated solutions of calcium and lithium chlorides as the absorbent. The severe corrosion problems inherent in handling these solutions and the relatively small dew point depressions obtained caused early abandonment in favor of, or conversion to. diethylene glycol when it was found that aqueous solutions of this organic liquid were more hygroscopic than the brines and were non-corrosive. Processes employing diethylene glycol-water solutions are widely used for gas dehydration at pressures ranging as high as 1,200 psi.13,14,15 At nominal pressures a dew point depression of 45° to 50°F may be be and the data of Russell et al." indicate that a minimum dew point is obtained from the effluent gas at a pressure of approximately 1,200 psi when the gas is in equilibrium contact with a 95 per cent by weight diethylene glycol solution. In a number of instances the dew point depression obtained with diethylene glycol-water solutions is not sufficient to produce a specification product without cooling the inlet gas. In a recent search for a better absorhent, triethylene glycol was used in a small commercial dehydration unit and subjected to rather exhaustive field tests.' The data obtained were encouraging and indicated that, at pressures ranging from 300 to 500 psi, triethylene glycol porduced a substantially greater dew point depression than diethylene glycol. These results led to an investigation of the system natural gas-water-triethylene glycol in an effort to obtain vapor-liquid equilibrium data, to determine pressure limitations, and to develop other data pertinent to the design of gas dehydration processes. A review of the literature has failed to reveal any data which permit reasonably accurate calculation of the vapor-liquid equilibrium conditions for a solution of water and triethylene glycol in contact with natural gas at high pressure. The limiting activity coefficient of zinc in a "binary " solvent has been described for several dilute ternary solutions by combining literature data from recent interaction studies in the terminal regions with thermodynamic data for the central regions. Results are discussed in terms of the Alcock and Richardson random solution model. The observed behavior agrees semiquantitatively with predictions using the model. RECENT efforts in the thermodynamics of dilute ternary liquid metallic solutions have been mainly concerned with the interactions between two dilute solutes, that is, the terminal region at an apex of the composition diagram.'-' A more general case is that of the behavior of a dilute solute over the full range of a ternary system, or, more specifically, the limiting activity of solute i as projected to the k-j binary side of the i-j-k composition triangle. An implication of this is that the interaction between i and j at the k apex should connect in some way to the interaction between i and k at the j apex. A model to characterize various types of expected behavior has been discussed by Alcock and Richardson.9,10 Such behavior can range from a simple linear relation for In yi over the 1-k binary to more complex curved relations which depend on various assumptions regarding the heat of solution in the j-k binary system and the presence or absence of clustering with solute i. Quantitative data to assess these concepts have been limited primarily to the cases of nonmetallic interstitial solutes in ferrous solutions. Alcock, Richardson, and various coworkers9-13 have discussed the behavior of oxygen, sulfur, silicon, or hydrogen in dilute solution over the range of iron + metal systems; however, the only data considered by them for substitutional nonferrous metallic solutions were the results of Elliott and Chipman concerning the activity of cadmium in the Pb + Sn, Pb + Bi, and Pb + Sb systems.9 These data were limited and did not cover the terminal regions in detail. An opportunity to extend the Alcock and Richardson considerations to the dilute solution of zinc in various "binary" solvents has been afforded by combining results of several of the recent investigations of ter-minal-region interactions with previous data from the literature for the same more concentrated solutions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of the analysis are shown in Figs. 1 to 5 where the log activity coefficient, (In yZn)xzn--o, is plotted vs the composition of the "binary" solvent. In these plots the end points are the values for In yzn in the appropriate binary solution with Bi, Pb, Sn, Cd, or In at the indicated temperature—usually 550°C (823°K). For the terminal regions the slopes were drawn using the first-order interaction parameters taken from various studies reported in the literature. The data points shown in the central regions were obtained by the short extrapolation to infinite dilution of the logarithm of the activity coefficient calculated from thermodynamic studies reported in the literature for the same systems. The sources of the data are indicated on each figure. Second-order effects were not considered. Reasonably smooth curves can be drawn to connect the central region with the terminal regions for the Zn-Pb + Bi system, Fig. 1, the Zn-Pb + Zn system, Fig. 1, and the Zn-Bi + Cd and Zn-Bi + Sn systems, Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 2, where central region data are available from two independent investigations, the agreement is quite good. The Zn-Pb + Cd system does not appear to be as well behaved as the previous four, Fig. 3; however, this type of behavior has also been

The kinetics of precipitation deoxidation is considered from a theoretical point of view. The size distribution and the total content of deoxidation products are estimated statistically as a function of time, taking into account Stokes and gradient collisions between the particles and separation at the top surface of the bath. The assumption is made that two particles coalesce into one larger particle as a result of a collision. General expressions are derived and calculations are carried out numerically for the case of silica particles in liquid iron. The analysis predicts a three-stage behavior for the removal of oxygen, an incubation stage, a stage of rapid separation, and a slow final stage where the content approaches the equilibrium value. The agreement with experimentally determined size distributions and deoxidation times is considered to be good. A quantitative estimation of such growth mechanisms as diffusion from the melt and redistribution of oxygen from small particles to large ones shows that these latter mechanisms cannot explain the experimentally observed gvowth of inclusions. This also indicates that collisions provide the important growth mechanism. OXIDE inclusions precipitate when a deoxidizer like silicon or aluminum is added to a steel bath. The inclusions grow and the large particles tend to separate from the bath. For each type of oxide the growth determines the sizes of the final inclusions as well as the total inclusion content of the steel. The mechanism of growth is controversial, however. It has been suggested that an inclusion grows principally by diffusion of atoms through the melt to the inclusion particle or principally by collisions and coalescence with other inclusions. Diffusion growth is always present to some extent but recent experiments and calculations by Torssell,' Kniippel et 'a1.,2 Sano et al. and Miya-shita4 indicate that collisions may be more important than previously realized. A detailed analysis has so far been lacking. The present paper is a quantitative, statistical analysis of the growth and separation of inclusions and is based on a collision theory. Nuclea-tion is not considered. The numerical estimates are based on the experimental conditions of Torssell's' investigation and comparisons are made with his observations. Torssell' studied the growth and separation of silica particles in liquid iron. Samples were taken from a 0.6 kg iron bath at various times after the addition of silicon. By a particle-counting technique developed by Bergh and Lindber~the size distribution of the inclu- sions was determined. The number of particles at the first sampling, 10 sec after silicon addition, was of the order of 3 x lo7 to 10' per cu cm, the largest particles having a radius of 2 to 4 pm. The volume fraction was 0.001 to 0.004; i.e., the dispersion was very dilute. During subsequent holding the largest particles increased their radius by a factor of 10 after about a minute, and the whole size distribution was displaced toward larger values. These results were obtained with allowance for precipitation of the equilibrium concentration of oxygen during solidification. The bath contained less than 0.01 pct of C. Figs. 1 and 2 show the typical appearance of the inclusions. Most particles are very closely spherical and appear to have been liquid or semiliquid in the melt. The observed number of inclusions, about 5x 10' per cu cm, is of the same order of magnitude as found by ~er~h.' This is a large value. It follows that the diffusion distances are very short and that the precipitation

MANY members of the Institute, who participated in the visit made, during the Bethlehem meeting of February, 1906, to the shops of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, at Phillipsburg, N. J., inspected with interest the new Electric-Air drill, which the company had set up for the purpose of showing it in actual operation to American. mining engineers. At the request of the Secretary of the Institute, I promised at that time to prepare a paper for our Transactions, describing the construction and advantages of the machine. But such a paper would then necessarily have contained much that was only expected or claimed by the designers and manufacturers of the drill, and not yet incontrovertibly proved by varied and long-continued practice. However moderate such statements might have been, they would have given inevitably to the paper, to some extent at least, the air of a prospectus, rather than of a technical contribution. I therefore decided, with the Secretary's approval, to postpone the writing of the promised paper until it could set forth the results of adequate actual practice, as well as the latest details of construction, etc., based upon practical experience. That period has now arrived. The Electric-Air drill has been exhaustively tested in the field, under varied and arduous conditions and upon the hardest rocks. It is now fairly in the field; its merits and performances are matters of unimpeachable record, and its place among established competitors can be definitely determined. THE ore of the Southeast Missouri lead district consists essentially of galena in dolomitic limestone. The galena usually is in a very finely disseminated condition. The experience of recent years in the concentrating plants of the St. Joseph Lead Co. has shown that dry crushing carried to a point where about 90 per cent of the ore passes a 14-mesh screen liberates the larger portion of the galena, and minimizes further necessary reduction in rod or ball mills. Concentration practice has attempted to carry size reduction to a point where economic unlocking of the galena is obtained, without causing undue sliming of the very friable galena. While 60 per cent of the tonnage of the district is treated by the flotation process, only 40 per cent of the total concentrates is produced by that means, as efforts have always been made to keep the grade and tonnage of flotation feed as low as possible. The milling practice of the district for some years has recognized the generally accepted idea of better selective grinding in rod mills as compared with ball mills, with the attendant decrease in production of fines. The function of rod and ball mills in the various concentrating plants is the grinding of table middlings and coarse tailings that carry lead values too high to be discarded. The simplified flowsheet in Fig. I illustrates the place of grinding mills in the circuit. The arrangement of classifiers, tables and mills constitutes a closed circuit within somewhat flexible limits. In 1937 experiments were conducted in replacing the ball charge in a 6 by 4-ft. ball mill with rods 2 in. in diameter and 51 in. long. This step was taken with some hesitancy, as it was easy to picture a mass of tangled and crossed rods. However, no difficulties developed, and after a short trial period, six more ball mills were converted to rod mills. These mills are of the spur gear and pinion, belt-driven type, using in most cases a 75-hp. motor and having a 9 1/2 -in. open trunnion discharge. As ball mills, they carried a charge of 16,000 to 20,000 lb. of balls, 2 in. in original size. The feed to the mills was dewatered by dewatering wheels and introduced at 70 to 75 per cent solids, with a single scoop feeder. One change in mill design was found advisable when rods were introduced. The existing end liners had an outward flare of 3 ½ in. in 12 in. These were replaced by linings having vertical interior faces, in order to prevent undue end travel of the rods. This change gave an effective working length of 5 2 ¾ in. inside the mill. No alterations were made in the shell liners, which are of the smooth type, made of manganese steel 2 in. in original thickness. The rods at present in use are 51 in. long and 1 3/4in. in diameter. The composition has been varied at times; at present they contain 0.70 per cent carbon and 0.70 per cent manganese. Some breakage and etching occurs as the rods become small, but this is considered preferable to using softer rods, which may kink and cause tangling of the charge. In the course of a study concerned with structural stability of precipitation hardening nickel base super -alloys after exposures to elevated temperatures, some interesting effects of hydrostatic pressure treatment on Rene were observed. The evidence presented below suggests that hydrostatic pressure treatment of the solution heat-treated alloy can affect the dispersion of the y' (Ni3Al) phase upon subsequent precipitation heat treatment and long time aging. Rene 41 alloy has the following nominal weight percent composition: Al B C Co Cr Fe Mn Mo Ti Ni 1.4 0.006 0.7 11.3 19.2 1.0 0.05 9.4 3.3 balance The effect of successive pressure, precipitation heat treatment, and long time aging on the microstructure of this alloy was determined by subjecting a number of alloy buttons to five different thermopressure treatments. This paper presents results of a laboratory study of retrograde condensate recovery by revaporization into dry injection gas. Flow tests were performed in 10.6-ft long sand packs at 100F and 1,500 psi. In three runs methane revaporized the liquid from a n-pentane-methane mixture in the presence of immobile water. TWO of these tests were water-wet, and the third was totally oil-wet. In the three runs n-pentane recovery was complete after 2.5 hydrocarbon PV of injection. There was no significant performance difference between the two wettability extremes. In a fourth experiment, a methane-hydrogen sulfide mixture revaporized a synthetic light, sour condensate. No water saturation was present. Equilibrium compositions and volumetric data were obtained for the four-component condensate. The heavy component, n-beptane, was removed after 6 PV production. Comparison of the effluent fluid compositions with known equilibrium data shows that the flowing fluid was equilibrium vapor and that the mixing zone between equilibrium vapor and dry injection gas was short. Data indicated that complete recovery of retrograde liquid occurred after it was contacted by a sufficient quantity of dry gas. INTRODUCTION When pressure declines below the fluid dew point in a gas condensate reservoir, a liquid phase forms. In this process, referred to as retrograde condensation, the quantity of liquid formed is frequently small enough that the liquid is not a flowing phase. To prevent loss of valuable retrograde liquids, the process of dry gas cycling has been employed for several years as a more or less standard practice. In this procedure the reservoir pressure is maintained above the fluid dew point so that the liquid components may be produced as vapor and then separated at the surface. Although full pressure maintenance by gas cycling seems ideal in terms of preventing liquids loss, several factors can reduce the atuactiveness of such an operation. From a study of a condensate reservoir in Alberta, Canada, Havlena et a1.1 con-cluded that cycling under conditions of declining pressure leads to economic advantages and to a high recovery of hydrocarbon liquids. This study considered effects of volumetric sweep efficiency, retrograde behavior of the original wet gas and revaporization characteristics of the retrograde liquid when contacted by dry gas. The first major work concerning revaporization of liquid in a gas condensate system is that of Standing et a1.2 Calculations based upon the PVT behavior of a recombined gas condensate fluid indicated that all retrograde liquid can be recovered if it is contacted by a sufficient quantity of dry gas. The paper considered the effect of variable permeability upon the recovery of retrograde liquid. Standing et al. concluded that recovery of heavier components in the retrograde liquid is greatest if reservoir pressure is allowed to decline below the dew point prior to dry gas injection. Since the work of Standing et al., several laboratory studies have been reported which show that recovery of hydrocarbon liquids by vaporization into dry injected gas can contribute to increased recovery above that obtained by ordinary production practices. Vaporization from retrograde condensate,3 conventional oil4-7 and volatile oil8 reservoirs has been considered. There is little work that deals with revaporization recovery from condensate reservoirs. This study demonstrates that vapor-liquid equilibrium exists when a dry gas is injected into a porous medium containing retrograde condensate; investigates the effect of wettability on revaporization of retrograde condensate; and provides an indication of the amount of dry gas necessary to

IN a paper read before the Institute of Metals, Rosenhain 1 described a new type of furnace designed primarily for the thermal analysis of metals by the inverse-rate method and used by him in the metallurgical department of the National Physical Laboratory with considerable success. In his discussion of this furnace, Rosenhain pointed out some difficulties met with in its operation, such as uniformity of rate of heating or cooling being inadequate for the degree of accuracy aimed at. To overcome this difficulty, he suggested, in place of motor propulsion, a gravity drive controlled by a"hydraulic cylinder with a relief valve whose width of opening can he regulated to allow of any desired rate of motion." The authors, in constructing a thermal-analysis furnace of Rosenhain's type, have therefore followed this suggestion and also added certain features that increase somewhat the convenience and simplicity of its operation. Requests for information regarding this furnace and the highly satisfactory results obtained from its use, it is believed, justify describing its construction and operation in sufficient detail to make possible its duplication or improvement. Description of Furnace.-The details of the furnace construction are shown in Fig. 1, which is drawn to scale. The heating tube is of /4 in. (6.35 mm.) wall "alundum" heated at the upper end by seventeen turns of 0.52 mm. platinum wire, which is coated with "alundum" cement supplied for this purpose. The cement coating is essential when a high temperature (over 1000° C.) is required, as it prevents hot spots with the resulting burning out of the heater. This platinum-wire winding, unlike "nichrome," is entirely satisfactory for temperatures of at least 1000° C. It has been maintained at that temperature continuously for 2 months and shows no signs of deterioration. This temperature is maintained by a current of 5 amp. drawn from 30 volts potential, so its necessarily continuous operation is quite economical.
