AT the Utah Copper Pit of Kennecott Copper Corp. a versatile mobile drill unit has been developed and tested. Through increased drilling speed and additional available drilling time, an improvement of 233 pct in drill performance has been realized. Operators using drill power can quickly and easily convert the unit from a vertical to a toe hole drill. Drilling is done with the machine in line with the unit or at right angles to it. Table I covers the 1950 drill record at the mine, showing the types of machines used and the footage obtained. [ ] Development of the new units was prompted by a desire for solution of the following problems: 1-The ever-expanding operations within the Utah Pit, requiring some 65 miles of transmission pipe lines radiating from a central compressed air plant, have now taxed this compressor plant beyond capacity. While 100 lb per sq in. pressure is maintained at compressors, transmission losses from innumerable small leaks result in low terminal pressure at the drills. Fig. 1 illustrates that while terminal pressure varies according to size of air hose and fittings used, the average drill is operating on air pressures within the 60 to 70-lb range. The compressor plant is operated primarily for air rock drills. All drilling is done on day shift, but it is necessary to run two of the three 3720 cu ft capacity compressors during night shift in order to prevent drastic loss of pressure through leaks. On day shift all three compressor units are operated at capacity, so that there is no reserve safeguard available for extensive repairs to any compressor. The calculated volume of compressed air required for operation of 25 drills is but 33 pet of three day-shift compressors. While compressed air is being used to a minor extent for purposes other than drilling, it is felt that satisfactory substitute facilities could be provided in the event that air lines were no longer available. 2-Drill performance has increased beyond the capacity of present 3 ½ -in. drifter machines. 3-The installation, maintenance, and moving of air lines in routine mining is a growing problem. The 2-in. level lines are placed outside electrification towers and must be moved to new location upon completion of each shovel cut. In addition to these moves it is often necessary to dismantle level lines so that excessive shovel spillage, or material covering track following a blast, can be pushed in the clear with bulldozers. Where level room is limited, it is often necessary to remove air lines in giving bulldozers room to prepare grades for wagon drills. In spite of precautions taken, many level lines become buried, twisted, and constricted, with excessive air loss resulting. Excessive back break in blasting often leaves several sections of air line suspended in mid-air. Occasionally air lines come in contact with defective electric transmission towers, so that holes are burned through pipe. 4-Rail-handling of drilling equipment such as wagon drills from one location to another requires considerable locomotive crane crew time. Any new unit developed should travel under its own power. 5-Present practice requires accessory material including hose, water pressure tanks, water barrels, drill steel, and bits to be transported by means of push cars when drill locations are changed on any level. 6-In order to supply numerous drill locations with material, many stock piles of new drill rods, drill bits, and other essentials must be left at strategic points, usually in the vicinity of powder magazines. This practice makes for poor housekeeping and contributes to the loss of supplies. Planning the Unit It was felt that a mobile drill unit which would rectify the foregoing problems should meet certain demands: 1-It must furnish compressed air to operate a 4-in. rock drill at a pressure of 90 to 100 lb.

Quenched alloys, prepared by powder metallurgical techniques, were examined by microscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions and heat treatments were chosen so that the chromium and nickel solvuses could be determined and a range of composition and temperature, in which a eutectoid had been reported, could be explored in small intervals. The results showed no evidence of eutectoid reactions having taken place. ALLOYS containing iron, chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are extensively used in high-temperature applications. In order to provide basic information on the solid-state reactions that occur in such alloys, the National Bureau of Standards is engaged in an extensive study of the equilibrium phases in the binary, ternary, and quaternary systems involving these four metals. Attention was directed to the chromium-nickel system because a review of the literature showed conflicting data. A recent compendium1 of the constitution of binary alloys gives two diagrams for the chromium-nickel system, one a simple eutectic and the second a diagram showing a eutectoid and a eutectic. The eutectoid was the result of an allotropic transformation in a high-temperature solid-solution form of a chromium-rich phase called 0. The approximate temperature and composition of the eutectoid was 1200°C and 30 at. pct Ni. In the preliminary study, at the Bureau, no transformation was indicated in the chromium-rich phase of ternary and quaternary alloys in which chromium and nickel were major components. Similar results have been reported from time to time in the literature,2-8 In consequence of this situation, a systematic study was made of the constitution of heat-treated chromium-nickel alloys using metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions of the alloys were selected so as to determine the boundaries of the chromium-rich and the nickel-rich phases and to explore in small intervals the ranges in composition and temperature in which the eutectoid had been reported. The results of this study are reported and discussed in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials, Alloys, and Heat Treatments—The alloys were prepared by a powder metallurgy technique similar to that used in earlier work.9 Analyses of the materials used are given in Table I. Powders were mixed using a vibrator in 30-g batches of predetermined composition; 2-g pellets were made from the mixture by compacting at room temperature in a 1/2-in. diam mold under 60,000 lb per sq in. pressure. The pellets were sintered in dry hydrogen for 10 days at 1300°C. At the end of the sintering treatment the specimens were quenched in water, which caused a pale green film to form on the chromium-rich alloys and thin black scale to form on the nickel-rich alloys. The pellets after sintering were approximately 1/2 in. diam by 3/32 in. thick. The purification train9 was modified by inserting a tube of titanium turnings, heated at 700°C to increase the efficiency of the removal of oxgen and nitrogen. It was found in the earlier work that the sintering treatment lowered the carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen contents of chromium-rich alloys to 0.01, 0.01, and 0.004 wt pct, respectively, and that there was a loss of chromium. In order to ascertain the extent of this loss, the chromium contents of certain alloys were determined chemically. They included those alloys used to determine the parameter-composition curves and those of critical composition, used to determine the chromium-solvus microscopically; these analyses were made on samples after the final heat treatments. The work of The Bahrein Petroleum Company, Ltd., on Bahrein Island consisted mainly in continuing development work and prospecting previously reported. The exploratory work, however, has been greatly minimized and new wells are being drilled, chiefly for the development of larger production; 20 wells had been completed by the end of 1935 and 8 were being drilled. In addition to what has been referred to as the ''main pay," two deeper productive horizons have been discovered, which apparently will greatly increase the potential of the field although the areal extent of this lower production has not yet been determined. The proven acreage of the "main pay" is more than 12,500 acres. Current production (principally from the upper horizons) is about 13,400 bbl. a day. The construction of a 10,000-bb1.-a-day refinery has begun and is to be in operation by July, 1936. It is expected that the capacity will be considerably increased at a later date. The construction of office buildings and a permanent camp has been almost completed. In Saudi Arabia the California Arabian Standard Oil Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of California, spudded in a well in April, 1935, near the village of Dammam, on the Persian Gulf coast of A1 Hasa. Although several important showings of high-gravity oil and considerable gas have been found, the well is not yet considcred a commercial producer. Dammam well No. 2 has been started farther south on the same structure. A great deal of reconnaissance and some detailed geological work has been completed during the last three field seasons. In order to overcome difficulties of transportation over the desert sand, unusual methods have been used. The parlies penctrating the interior by the use of automobiles and trucks have been supplied with gasoline and provisions by caravans of camels. Mail and supp1ies of lighter weight urgently needed have been carried to the field men by an airplane operated by the geological division of the company. Each party has been supplied with a radio receiving and transmitting set to keep in contact with the airplane as well as with geological headquarters at Jubail on the coast of A1 Hasa.

The rates of growth of pearlite in high-purity Fe-C alloys have been measured as a function of the transformation temperature. These and other data have been correlated in terms of a derived rate equation. Activation energies for the growth were found to be 24,200 cal per mol of austenite for the 0.78 pct C alloy and 27,600 cal per mol for the 0.93 pct C alloy. Theoretical implications are discussed. AN excellent review of the the theoretical and experimental studies on the mechanism and kinetics of the eutectoid reaction has been presented recently by Mehl and Dube.' They have pointed out that these investigations have followed two lines of approach: 1—experimental studies and derivations of expressions for the overall transformation characteristics, and 2—derivation of expressions for the nucleation and growth rates in terms of fundamental processes. Investigations of the latter type have been concerned for the most part with the nature of the growth at the austenite-pearlite interface in plain carbon and alloy eutectoid steels. They discuss two theories of the rate of growth of pearlite from aus-tenite—those of Brandt and of Zener. Both derive rate equations which are based on the assumption that carbon diffusion is the controlling mechanism. Mehl and Dube,' Zener,2 and Brandts. " have attempted to calculate growth rates by use of these equations together with thermodynamic and diffusion data. The results are encouraging, but agreement is not so good as to constitute verification of the theories. Furthermore, it Is not clear how these equations are to be used to study the effect of alloying elements which apparently exert little influence on carbon diffusion, but markedly decrease growth rates. It is not clear whether or not the addition to iron of an alloying element which does not diffuse during transformation can alter the rate of growth of body-centered from face-centered cubic iron. From the abstract, "A realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework." Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and southwestern Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in [Fig. 1]. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Gulernan, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran.

The mines operated by the Compañía de Real del Monte y Pachuca, Pachuca, Mexico, are in two districts, the Pachuca, and Real del Monte. The principal area of mineralization is within a rectangle roughly 10 miles from east to west and 6 miles from north to south. It contains a number of veins from 2 to 20 ft. wide, which are exploited by this mining company. The scattered position of the producing mines led to the construction of two mills between 1906 and 1908; the Loreto mill, in Pachuca, averaged 2600 tons daily, and the Guerrero mill, in Real del Monte, milled 1270 tons daily. On Feb. 1, 1929, the management decided to enlarge the Loreto mill to take the combined tonnage of both mills at that time. This economic measure required the centralization of ore delivery, which would also afford a material saving in the cost of ore transport. The centralization would give the company the following advantages over the former system of operation: 1. Beneficiation at a single mill, closer to source of materials and supplies than the abandoned Guerrero mill. The refinery is also in the Loreto patio. 2. Ore delivery to surface at one point (San Juan Pachuca shaft) instead of at four. 3. Elimination of aerial tramways. To show what would be required to effect this centralization, it is necessary to describe the means by which the ore was delivered to the two mills, prior to centralization. The heart of the Real del Monte district is roughly four miles from that of the Pachuca section. In spite of recent trends in the United States toward construction of steam generating plants near mine mouths, and toward use of high-voltage direct current for long-distance transmission of electricity, coal in substantial amounts is being transported over relatively long distances to serve specific needs. As coal is a low-cost bulk commodity which is more suitable for use near the point of origin, some of these long hauls are of considerable interest because they show what can be done under the pressure for more and more coal to support industrial and economic growth. Japan has an Insatiable Appetite for Coal Perhaps the longest U.S. coal journey begins in the east Appalachian Basin of southern Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and southwestern Virginia. High-quality coking coal mined in these areas is shipped by rail to Baltimore, Md., and to Hampton Roads, Va., where the coal is reloaded on freighters for shipment primarily to western Europe and Japan. In 1967, shipments of coal to western Europe totaled 19 million tons, and shipments to Japan totaled 12 million tons. Japan also imports coal from Australia, the U.S.S.R., Canada, Poland, the People's Republic of China, and to a lesser ex- tent from several other countries. In an effort to solve long-term needs, Japanese steel interests have contracted for the purchase from the Kaiser Steel Corp. of 51 million long tons of coking coal over the period 1970 to 1985. The coal will come from the Kaiser Steel Corp. mine near Fernie, British Columbia. This arrangement will reduce Japan's future dependence on Appalachian Basin coal.

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

In this paper on the recovery of mercury as sulphide, from the residues from the amalgamation and cyanide treatment of high-grade ores and concentrates, I will not discuss the many reactions, chemical and other- wise, that take place in the general process, but confine myself more particularly to the methods of recovering the mercury. I submit charts of two amalgamation-barrel charges, Figs. 1 and 2, which are self-explanatory. The flow sheet of the high-grade and the mercury extraction plants is showh in Fig. 3.

The present Paper extends the previous work on cold reduced, low carbon steels to preferred orientations developed after various heat treatments. In recrystal-lized rimmed steel, cube-on-comer orientations increased with cold reductions up to 80 pct. Above that {111}<112> and a partial fiber texture with (1,6,11) in the rolling direction dominated. During grain growth, cube-on-corner orientations have been observed to grow at the expense of {210}<00l>. In re-crystallized Si-Fe (111) (112) and cube-on-edge type orientations are dominant near the surface and the (1,6,11) texture near the midplane for reductions up to 60 pct. With larger reductions {111)}<112> and the (1,6,11) texture are dominant. In cross rolled capped steel a relationship of 30 deg rotation was observed between the (100)[011] of the rolling texture and the main orientations after re crystallization. Most orientations present in recrystallized specimens can be related to components of the rolling texture by one of the following rotations: a) 25 to 35 deg about a (110) b) 55 deg about a (110) C) 30 deg about a (Ill) THE orientation texture of recrystallized steel is of interest where the product is to be deep drawn, because preferred orientation is related to anisotropy of mechanical properties such as the plastic strain ratio (r value);1,2 and in electrical steel applications where a high concentration of [loo] directions in the plane of the sheet improves the magnetic properties of the material. It is interesting to note that both these aims are to a large extent achieved commercially, even though the orientation texture of cold rolled steel does not show large variation3 and the recrystallized orientations are generally given as being related to the as rolled orientations mostly by 25 to 35 deg rotations about common (110) directions.4-6 There is, as yet, no single completely accepted theory on recrystallization. The three mechanisms that have been investigated and discussed are: a) Oriented growth b) Oriented nucleation c) Oriented nucleation, selective growth Largely from the observations of the recrystalliza-tion process by means of the electron microscope,7-11 there is now considerable evidence that the "nucleus" of the recrystallized grain is produced by the coalescence of a few subgrains to form a larger composite subgrain, which finally grows by high angle boundary migration into the deformed matrix. From the intensive work on the recrystallization of rolled single crystals of iron, Fe-A1 and Fe-Si al-loys4-" he following observations have been made: 1) The change in orientation during primary recrys-tallization can usually be described as a rotation of 25 to 36 deg about one of the (110) directions. 2) The (110) axes of rotation often coincide with poles of active (110) slip planes. 3) If several orientations are present in the cold rolled structure, the (110) axis of rotation will preferably be a (110) direction that is common to two or more of the orientations. 4) With larger amounts of cold reduction (70 pct or more) departure from these observations became more frequent. 5) After larger cold reductions, rotations on re-crystallization about (111) and (100) directions have been observed. K. Detert12 infers that a rotation relationship of 55 deg about (110) directions is also possible, by stating that the recrystallized orientation {111}<112> can form from the orientation {100}<011> of cold reduced partial fiber texture A.3 The observation by Michalak and schoone13 that (lll)[l10] formed during recrys-tallization in fully killed steel containing (111)[112],— as well as (001)[ 110] which is related to the {111}<011> by a 55 deg rotation about <110>-implies a possible 30 deg rotation relationship about the common [Ill]. Heyer, McCabe, and Elias14 have recrystallized rimmed steel after various amounts of cold reduction, by a rapid and by a slow heating cycle and found that the preferred orientations strengthened with increased cold reduction. The most pronounced orientation up to about 70 pct cold reduction was found to be {1 11}< 110>, after 80 pct cold reduction both {111}<110> and {111}<112>, after 85 and 90 pct cold reduction, {111}<112>, and after 97.5 pct cold reduction it was {111}<112> and (100)(012). In the present work, the orientation textures of the recrystallized specimens are examined under various conditions of steel composition, amount and method of cold reduction, and method of recrystallization. The relationships between the preferred orientations of the as rolled and recrystallized specimens, and the conditions for the formation of the various orientations during recrystallization are investigated.

The surface area that mining requires is a minuscule fraction of the total land mass of the United States, according to the US Bureau of Mines&apos; latest report "Land Utilization and Reclamation in the Mining Industry, 1930-71." During the 42-year period from 1930 to 1971, the mining industry utilized 3.65 million acres-only 0.16% of a total 2.27 billion acres of land-and reclaimed 1.46 mil- lion acres, or 40% of what it used. Which leaves, as still unreclaimed, 0.096% of the nation&apos;s total land mass.

IN 1948 in the United States, 184,300 tons of lead was fabricated as coverings for electric power and communication cables. Such covering generally is called "sheathing" for the principal lengths of the cables, while the short lead encasements of the joints are called "sleeves." For the purpose of this paper, both lead sheathing and lead sleeving can fittingly be called lead tubing. In the United States in the same year, 34,262 tons of lead was consumed in making extruded lead pipes. Such pipe is employed frequently for water or chemical solution conveyance with gage pressures up to 100 psi. Consequently, the walls are thicker in ratio to diameter than is the case with the cable sheaths. For this discussion, lead pipes can be thought of as tubes or tubing. About 19 centuries ago, the Romans produced metallic lead of about 99.9 pct purity. Evidently this was cast in flat sheets of Y8-in. thickness, for instance. Such sheet of 10-ft lengths was bent around a removable core producing a tube somewhat oval in cross-section and with a typical internal diameter of, say, 3 in. This method of production necessitated a seam or longitudinal joint evidently made by casting the seam metal adherently. The seam metal, as analyzed recently, contains about 1 ½ pct Sn. Blow pipes were said to have been employed when the joint was made. Specimens of such pipe were found both in Italy and in the British Isles. It is believed the pipes conveyed water for drinking purposes and for baths. Numerous specimens are still in existence in a good state of preservation, due to lead&apos;s usual inertness in air or water. According to Claude E. Pearson,1 there were various stages in the evolution of lead extrusion presses for making tubes: I. First press by Joseph Bramah, 1797. 2-First successful press by Thomas Burr, 1820. 3-First bridge die press, J. and C. Hanson, 1837. In 1845, Wheatston and Crooke made the first lead sheathed electric cable. Flat lead strip was wound spirally around the insulated conductor. Overlapping edges of lead were soldered. Early cables were also made by pulling insulated conductors into 50-ft lengths of lead tube. Borel in France, and Wesselau are credited with devising the first presses for extruding lead sheaths directly on cables in 1879. In the United States, Eaton, in 188o, and Roberston, in 1885, introduced new presses of improved design. Following Cunningham&apos;s original idea of making lead traps and. bends in 1873, the presses apparently were improved and made successfully soon thereafter. Between the years 1930 and 1940, two continuous extrusion presses for lead were developed abroad. One apparently was originated by Dunsheath and made by the Henley Telegraph Works Co. The other was developed by the Pirelli-General Cable Co. CURRENT PRODUCTION In addition to the several descriptive chapters on lead extrusion in Pearson&apos;s book, the Metals Handbook2 recently described pipe, sheath, and collapsible tube production. The latter is by impact extrusion.

Three basic questions must be answered by an engineer performing an economic analysis of a mineral property: (1) How much can the company afford to pay for the property; (2) At what rate should the property be mined; (3) What will be the return on the investment. These questions often defy reasonable analysis, because at the point in time at which they must be answered little may be known about the grade of ore and the reserve tonnage. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, to derive a method of determining purchase price, rate of production and return on investment which is valid under varying conditions of ore grade and tonnage reserve; and, second, to apply this method to the Margay deposit in an attempt to evaluate it as a business enterprise. This is an actual economic analysis of an existing nickel-copper deposit fictitiously named the Margay. It was carried out for a mining corporation and proved to be the determining factor in the subsequent purchase and development of the property. All data referring to costs, quality and quantity of ore, etc., are accurate and truly represented. Prices used are obsolete but the method is not dependent on those variables. Basic assumptions for the analysis are given in Table I, page 71.

Some 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca³P2O8) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix. Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by 1/2 mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. Some 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca³P2O8) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix. Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by 1/2 mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. The present work has two objectives: first to develop an experimental method which would give some new information on the micromechanism of the reduction of oxides by gases at elevated temperature; second to clari,fy the intermediate phases of the W-0 system, formed during the reduction. A Galvanic cell with the solid electrolyte , ZrO2 . CaO, was imbedded in powders of W03, CuO, or Fe20s with two measuring electvodes and with a reference electrode. Recovery and primary recrystalliza-tion in cold worked metals are usually considered as two competing processes. Some of the effects which usually accompany recovery are: alleviation of stress corrosion tendencies, changes in thermal emf,1 damping capacity,2 electrical resistivity,2 and magnetic properties,3 and only minor changes in hardness or the related strength properties. During primary recrystalliza-tion new unstrained grains are formed at the expense of the strained matrix. These new grains eventually become visible metallographically, and nucle-ation and growth kinetics have been indicated for this process.4,5 Frequent attempts have been made to study the cold-working phenomenon by observations on the line broadening by X ray diffraction patterns. Relatively few measurements of line intensities have been made, although Brind-ley and his collaborators, 6,7,8 by means of film techniques, compared the intensities of cold worked Cu, Ni, and Rh patterns with those from chemically precipitated powders. These precipitated powders were presumed to be strain free, and it was found that the intensities for the cold-worked materials progressively decreased as the Bragg angle increased except for the first line, where there was an increase due to reduction in extinction. This was interpreted as a randomness in atomic position induced by cold work. Such randomness is similar to that caused by thermal agitation and has been described as "frozen heat" displacement of 0.08-0.10 A from the mean atomic position. In a recent study9 on the effect of cold work in metals on their powder pattern intensities, the changes in integrated intensity for heavily cold worked alpha brass were observed as a function of the annealing temperature. These measurements were made with a manually operated Geiger-counter spectrometer using CuKa radiation monochromated with a rock salt crystal. Intensity measurements were made with a scaling meter over small intervals of angle, and the equipment was so arranged that the diffracted and incident beams made equal angles with the specimen. Intensities could be compared directly by simply interchanging specimens, and comparisons from day to day were made with a standard whose line intensities did not change on aging. It was shown that a cold worked alpha brass standard was stable for at least a year. Table 1 indicates the results of the integrated intensity measurements on a 70 Cu-30 Zn brass. In the sample preparation, a brass plate was first cold rolled 50 pct and then filed, screened to —325 mesh, compacted into briquettes at a pressure of 60,000 psi and finally annealed for one hour at various temperatures up to 400°C. The briquetting pressure did not seem to influence the integrated intensities, and most of the cold work was introduced by the filing. Although this method of cold work is not quantitative, it was used to obtain random orientation (and thus uniform diffraction lines) in order to make accurate measurements of integrated intensity. Back reflection patterns were taken in each case to check the uniformity of the lines, and from the observed line broadening it was apparent that this type of plastic deformation was quite severe. Care was taken to traverse the entire background of the pattern and to assign to each peak the total intensity above this background. The bases of the diffraction lines were quite broad and spread out over several degrees, even for the narrow peaks. The theoretical intensities were calculated to include a temperature correction, a dispersion correction, and a Lorenz- polarization factor corrected for the crystal monochromated beam. In Table 1 it was necessary to match the calculated and observed values at only one point, and the rest of the experimental values were converted directly to this arbitrary scale. The integrated intensities in Table 1 are listed in arbitrary units, and the accuracy was sufficient to reproduce any of the measured line intensities to within + 1.5 units. It is evident that the percentage error on the strongest line (111) was quite low. The calculated values and the observed intensities for the cold worked material matched reasonably well. As the annealing temperature was raised, however, the intensity of the strongest reflections, particularly the (lll), decreased measurably.
