In an eccentric annulus, cement may favor the widest side and bypass slower-moving mud in the narrowest side. Tendency of the cement to bypass mud is a function of the geometry of the annulus, the density and flow properties of the mud and cement and the rate of flow. Bypassing can be prevented if the pressure gradient protluced from circulation of the cement and buoyant forces exceeds the pressure gradient necessary to drive the mud through the narrowest side of the annulus at the same velocity as the cement. In the absence of buoyant forces, one requirement for this balance is maintenance of the yield strength of the cement greater than the yield strength of the mud multiplied by the maximum distance from the casing to the wall of the borehole and divided by the minimum distance. If the yield strength of the cement is below this value, bypassing of mud cannot be prevented unless buoyant forces or motion of the casing significantly aid the displacement. INTRODUCTION Successful primary cementing leaves no continuous channels of mud capable of flow during well treatment and production. Prevention of channels requires care. Tep-litz and Hassebroek provide evidence of channels of mud after primary cementing in the field.' Channeling of cement through mud in laboratory experiments has also been reported.'-' Recommendations for improving the displacement of mud include (1) centralizing the casing in the borehole,'-" 2) attaching centralizers and scratchers to the casing and moving it during displacement,18 "3) thinning the isolating the cement by plugs while it is circulated down the casing,%( (5 establishing turbulence in the cement," and (6) holding the cement slurry at least 2 lb/gal heavier than the mud and circulating the cement slurry at a very low rate of flow.' Although much has been written about the above parameters, the relative importance of each has not been well defined. In this investigation, the mechanics of mud displacement are described through results from analytical models and experiments. The model chosen — a single string of casing eccentric in a round, smooth-walled, impermeable borehole — is analagous to casing centralized in a borehole which is not round and to placing more than one string of casing in a borehole. In each, some paths for flow are more restricted than others. A fluid flowing in the borehole may seek the least restricted, or most open, path. This tendency for uneven flow can lead to channeling of cement through mud unless preventive measures are taken. The analytical models describe channeling and give means of balancing the flow. Experimental data test the analytical models and illustrate effects of motion of the casing, differences in density and mud's tendency to gel. Results are encouraging. Piston-like displacement of mud by an equal density cement slurry is possible through proper balance of the flow properties of the mud and cement slurries to the eccentricity of the annulus. The more eccentric the annulus, the thicker must be the cement relative to the mud. If proper balance is not achieved. bypassing of mud by cement cannot be prevented without assistance from motion of the casing or buoyant forces. Increasing the rate of flow can help to start all mud flowing but cannot prevent channeling of cement through slower moving mud in an eccentric annulus. Thinning the cement slurry tends to increase channeling although the extent of turbulence in the annulus may be increased. Description of flow in an eccentric annulus begins in the next section. It is assumed that (1) the casing is eccentric and is stationary, (2) the mud and cement slurries have the same density and (3) the gel structure of the mud has been broken and the mud and cement follow the Bingham flow model. Effects related to these restrictions will be discussed. FLOW PATTERNS SlNGLE FLUID IN ANNULUS Flow of a single fluid through an eccentric annulus is illustrated in Fig. 1. Part A shows laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid. This distribution of flow was calculated by Piercy, Hooper and Winney.' In fully developed turbulent flow, the velocity distribution around the annulus is less distorted, but the flow still favors the widest part of the annulus Parts B, C and D of Fig. 1 are a qualitative representation of the flow of a Bingham fluid. The yield strength of the fluid increases the severity of bypassing compared to Newtonian flow. At a very low rate of flow, all flow is confined to that portion of the annulus which has the minimum perimeter-to-area ratio. The fluid shears on the perimeter of that area when the pressure gradient multiplied by the area just exceeds the yield stress of the fluid multiplied by the perimeter. Whether or not the minimum perimeter-to-area region encompasses all of the annulus or only a part (as shown in Part B) depends on the geometry of the annulus. If only a part begins to flow, increasing the rate of flow increases the area flowing until finally there is flow throughout the annulus.

An absolute calibration has been achieved for sampling and analyzing liquid steel for hydrogen based on Sieverts' values of hydrogen solubility in iron. Further checks were made in nickel, iron-nickel, and 18-8 stainless melts. The sampling method was successfully applied to a large number of commercial steel melts in various types of furnaces. The concurrent problem of sample storage was also solved. THE problem of sampling of liquid steel for hydrogen is more difficult than the problem of analysis. Hydrogen has a greater mobility than any other element; it is the only element that will diffuse out of steel at room temperature. In accordance with the known relation between temperature and diffusivity, the diffusion of hydrogen is extremely rapid at the temperature of liquid steel. Consequently, in the past, attempts to quench molten steel to retain the dissolved hydrogen have not been as successful as similar attempts with nitrogen or oxygen. The retention of hydrogen is especially difficult since it will continue to escape at room temperature even if the molten metal has been rapidly quenched. The hydrogen sampling methods may be classified broadly as (1) the rapid quenching techniques which attempt to preserve super saturation and (2) those methods which attempt to collect the gases evolved as the metal freezes and cools to room temperature. With all methods of sampling but especially with the rapid quenching methods, there is also a concurrent problem of storing the sample until analysis is undertaken. The two problems are interrelated and must be considered together when discussing liquid steel sampling techniques. The major obstacle in liquid steel sampling has been that there was no way of evaluating properly the various sampling and storage techniques which have been developed. It has not been possible to compare the accuracy of the various methods. For evaluation of sampling methods some known standard is required; this may be found in the published work on the equilibrium solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron which has been determined in three separate investigations.1,2,3 The data are shown in table I. Sieverts' original method of obtaining gas solubilities involved measurement of the volume of gas required to saturate the liquid metal contained in an evacuated bulb of known volume. This procedure, improved by introduction of high frequency induction heating, has yielded reproducible results which appear to be entirely dependable. Using Sieverts' method, it has been proved for iron and other metals and alloys that the hydrogen solubility is proportional to the square root of the pressure of the hydrogen gas above the liquid, so that one may work with various partial pressures of hydrogen to put different amounts of hydrogen in solution. From Sieverts' law it is possible to know accurately what amount of hydrogen is dissolved in the liquid metal at the time of sampling. The accuracy of a sampling method may be gauged by reference to this known solubility. It was the purpose of this investigation to develop a method for sampling liquid steel and for storing the sample so that the analytical result would represent the actual hydrogen content of the metal bath. Lack of reliable and detailed information on many of the older fields in Indiana has necessitated the use of x and y in many instances. Even in the younger fields many data were lacking. It was thought that even though much was to be desired regarding the amount and accuracy of the information on the old Trenton field, it was too important to be left out. We trust that we are not perpetuating any of the inaccuracies that are to be found in the data for Indiana.

OWING largely to its value as a toughener and strengthener of steel for both industrial and military purposes, nickel is playing, an important role in the current war. It is fine of the metals in which the Allies enjoy a definite edge over the Axis nations and this time there is no place to which the Germans may send another submarine "Deutsehland" and expect to pick up a cargo of nickel to replenish their exhausted supplies. Total world nickel production thanks almost entirely to the expanded operation of the International Nickel Co. of Canada at Sudbury must now be at the rate of around 175,000 tons a year scarcely more than 5 per cent of which is accounted for by Germany, Italy and Japan. This represents more than four times the world output at the end of the first World War.

A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: (1) geology of the mineralized zone, (2) quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits, (3) physical size and shape of the deposit and areas underlain by waste as well as ore, (4) mineralogical and metallurgical characteristics of the ore, (5) physical characteristics of the ore, (6) bulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade, (7) data on factors that affect mining operations, such as ground water and ground conditions. The method and equipment best suited for a particular drilling job depend upon the geologic features of the mineral deposit to be tested.

The central region of the Ti-Mn system was studied by means of x-ray diffraction and metallography. The following intermediate phases were found: an MgZn2-type Laves phase having a wide range of homogeneity, the p-phase of unknozvn structure, and the + -phase with a large tetragonal unit cell, stable at 930°C and lower temperatuves. MaYKUTH, Ogden, and jaffee1 determined the soh-inh bility limits of manganese in and titanium. They also confirmed the structure of the intermediate phase TiMn2 which was previously identified as a Laves phase of the MgZn2 type.2 In the equiatomic region they found an additional intermediate phase, y, which presumably formed by a peritectic reaction at approximately 1200°C. This last observation was disputed by Rostoker, Elliott, and McPhers0n,3 who reported the formation of TiMn by a peritectoid reaction between 900" and 1000° C, but found no evidence of any intermediate phase other than the Laves phase at higher temperatures. Elliott and Rostoker4 reported furthermore that the X-ray diffraction pattern of TiMn could be identified as that of a o phase, although their data were not consistent with this inter~retation. Margolin and Ence6 presented X-ray diffraction data for the and TiMn, phases, and obtained metallographic indications for the existence of additional intermediate phases. They concluded from metallographic observations that two Laves phases are formed, separated by another phase, designated as &. A phase diagram for the Mn-Ti system has recently been published by Savitskii and Kopetskii,' which shows considerable disagreement with the work of Hellawell and Hume-Rothery,' in particular with regard to the terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to clarify the phase relationships in the equiatomic region of the Ti-Mn system. The metals used in preparing the alloy specimens Were iodide titanium and electrolytic manganese, the latter having a nominal purity of approximately 99.9 pet. The electrolytic manganese was covered with a thick coating of a brown manganese oxide which was reduced by heating the manganese flakes for several hours at a temperature of 1100°C in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen. Three alloys, see Table I, were made using sponge titanium and manganese not treated in hydrogen. The alloys were prepared by arc-melting in an atmosphere of helium or argon. The composition of each alloy was calculated by assuming that the entire weight loss during melting was due to evaporation of manganese. Subsequent chemical analysis of certain alloys indicated that the compositions calculated in this manner were usually correct within 1.4 pct, as shown in Table I. All alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil before sealing them in silica tubes containing argon at a pressure of 1 atm at the annealing temperature. After quenching in cold water, the alloy specimens were bright and clean, with no evidence of any surface reaction. WHEN diamond drilling was introduced in the Rhokana mines in 1939 it was used principally for pillar removal and for completion of the upper portions of shrinkage stopes which were being affected by increasing pressure. This method of drilling long blastholes proved so successful that it was extended gradually to cover stoping, pillar recovery, and hanging cave work. BY 1949 virtually all the ~roduction of Mindola and Nkana was being obtained by this method. At the present time 87,500 ft are drilled each month by the 80 diamond drills in daily operation. Responsibility for control and issue of diamond drilling equipment and crowns, as well as tabulation of all performance figures, was taken over by a sPecially formed Roto drill department, which also investigated the problems encountered with this new method. To assist this department a fully equipped test chamber, Fig. 1, was established underground where performances of various types of machines and equipment could be studied under conditions as nearly uniform as possible. Since the establishment of this department, which was eventually taken over and incorporated into the study department, considerable experimental work has been done on every aspect of the subject. The problems can be classified broadly under four headings: improvement of drilling equipment, crown design, machines, and stoping layouts. One of the major problems with drilling equipment has been to eliminate vibration. Owing to flexing of rods in the hole, severe friction is set up on the back end of the 'Ore barrel and On any high spots in the rods, inducing harmonic vibration in the string of rods and causing the crown to chatter against the face. This not only causes premature crown failure but also reduces penetration speeds and increases wear on the machines and rods used. In the early days, when only holes of EX size were drilled, vibration was largely overcome by periodic greasing of rods and core barrel during each run, but with the change-over to the larger BX hole it became obvious that application of grease by hand was inefficient and time-consuming, and attempts were made to perfect a self-lubricating core barrel. A series of these core barrels was made up and tested and a number of the latest type were used under normal operating conditions, but although footages up to 120 ft were drilled without refilling the overall performance was inconsistent, and the idea was shelved in view of the success of the stabilizer rods referred to later in this paper. At the same time tests were made with barrels 5 ft and later 6 ft long instead of the normal 2 ft. Although a slight improvement was noticed, greasing was still necessary. It was found that rod vibration increased as the core barrel became worn, and in an early test chamber experiment crowns drilled with a worn core barrel averaged 95 ft with a diamond loss of 4.76 carats, whereas the same type of crowns with a new barrel averaged 228 ft with a diamond loss of 3.13 carats. until then all BX drilling had been done with B-sized rods, but during a test on a string of BX-sized rods it was noticed that vibration was negligible. Because of the larger surface area of metal bearing on the sides of the hole, however, the friction and resistance of rods of this size rendered them impracticable on any but the most powerful of the machines, The use of stabilizers spaced evenly along the rods was the next logical step, and for this B couplings, see Fig. 2, were set with three tungsten carbide inserts 1 in. long placed around the periphery equidistantly and at an angle of 45" with a right hand lead. These were placed immediately behind the core barrel and then at 12-ft intervals, as it was found that vibration still occurred when the stabilizers were more than 15 ft apart. The effect of these stabilizers was immediately noticeable; holes were drilled with a minimum of vibration, penetration speeds were improved, and as it was no longer necessary to grease the rods there was a marked decrease in the overall drilling time for each hole. While tests were being made with the stabilizer comeb periodic were taking place with a set of tapered threaded rods, and because there was marked improvement in efficiency it was decided to incorporate the stabilizers and tapered threading in all new rods ordered for Rhokana. The feature of these rods is that only four full turns are required to tighten the coupling as against nine for the present type of B rods. Also, as they are self-centering it is virtually impossible to crossthread them. Each rod has a male 5" tapered Acme thread, Fig, 3, on one end and a female at the other, so that separate couplings are unnecessary, and every fifth rod has an

THE Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. ORIGINAL FLOTATION EQUIPMENT AND ORE The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.p.m. The impellers were the 45° type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling 90 per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent marmatite, 1 per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between 15 and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FLOTATION AT SULLIVAN Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The practice is still employed.

Ti6NileSi7)G is known to be cubic, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. In the present work four new G sili-cides were found with other transition elements and five G germanides. The titanium-group elements are very efficient in forming G phases. The vanadium -group elements are somewhat less efficient, and the chromium-group elements do not form any. Cobalt can replace nickel in most cases, but it is somewhat less efficient. Iron was not found to form any G phases. Germanium is somewhat less efficient than silicon. The (TiNiSi)E phase has been previously identified by Westbrook. However, its crystal structure has not been determined. In the present work the E phase was found to have an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a. = 7.02, bo = 5.18, co = 11.11A. A large number of other E phases were found at the same stoicheometric ratio in ternary systems of silicon and germanium with transition elements. Lattice parameters similar to those for TiNiSi were measured. The number of atoms per unit cell is estimated at 30 to 36. The vanadium-group elements are somewhat more efficient in forming the E phase than the titanium-group elements. Chromium-group elements were not found to form any E phases. Cobalt is somewhat less efficient than nickel, and iron is less efficient than cobalt. Germanium is not as efficient as silicon. ThE ternary silicide designated as G-phase was first identified by Beattie and versnyder1 and by Beattie and Hagel2 at the approximate composition TiNi2Si. Westbrook et al.' gave the composition as Ti2Ni7Sis. This phase was found to be fcc with a. = 11.201A and 116 atoms per unit cell. Beattie4 and more recently independently Hladishevskii, Kripyakevich, Kuzma, and Teslyuk5 were able to show that this structure is isotypic with MgeSi7CuLe and Th6Mn23. The latter structures had been determined by Florio, Rundle, and snow,' Nagorsen and Witte,7 and Bergman and Waugh.8 According to the crystal structure, Ti8Ni6Si7 may be considered as the ideal composition. The Russian investigators5 identified six additional ternary phases isotypic with Ti6Ni6Si7, in which titanium is replaced by Mn, V, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, and one, namely MneNil6Ge7, in which germanium replaces silicon. They also found that Cr6Ni6Si7, which does not occur as a ternary phase, can be stabilized by replacing 1 at. pct of the Cr by V, Mn, or Ta. Another ternary silicide was found by Westbrook et al.3 at the composition TiNiSi, and it was designated by them as the E phase. The crystal structure of this phase has not been deter-

Structures obtained on freezing of several hypo-and hypereutectic Al-Cu alloys over a range of solidification rates have been examined. Dendrite spacing, L, increases linearly with solute concentration and with the square root of the inverse freezing rate. The relationship for hypoeutectic alloys is: where rate of change of fraction solid with time, is freezing rate, C is solute concentration, (pct Cu)=1. Mass transport in inter dendritic liquid during solidification is analyzed; the experimental observations suggest maximum concentration differences and constitutional supercooling in the inter dendritic liquid increase with an increase in the solute concentration. The dendrite morphology changes with freezing rate and alloy composition. The dendrites of the a phase are parallel, uniformly spaced plates with slow freezing and rods with rapid freezing. Nonor-thogonal side branching has been observed in phases with cubic and tetragonal structures. Side branches in a dendrites are orthogonal with slow freezing and at 60 deg with rapid freezing. Formation of second-phase envelopes around the Primary phase is also discussed. DENDRITIC structure is characteristic of many types of phase transformation. The most extensively studied so far has been solidification of liquid solutions. chalmersl and coworkers have interpreted the formation of dendrites in terms of the breakdown of a planar interface. Most of the work done concerns itself with the development of an instability at the interface. Little theoretical work has been done quantitatively to relate the parameters of dendritic structure to mass transport in the liquid phase. A few empirical relations based on the experimental2'3 observations exist in the literature. Several workers2 including Brown and Adams1 have studied dendrite spacing in A1-Cu system as a function of solidification variables. In most cases, dendrite spacing has been found to increase linearly with the square root of some parameter proportional to the freezing time. The effect of solute concentration is not clear; some workers report the dendrite spacing increases with solute concentration4 whereas others report vice versa.''' ~ohatgi' has observed an increase in the spacing between ice dendrites with an increase in solute concentration in water. Tiller has also suggested that dendrite spacing should increase with solute concentration. In the present work dendrite spacing and morphology have been examined as a function of solute concentration and freezing rate. The freezing rate is defined as the fraction of liquid solidified per unit time, dfs/dß?, where f, is the fraction solid and 8 the time. The fastest freezing rate studied was 4550 times the slowest freezing rate. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS It is of interest to analyze the concentration distribution in the liquid phase between growing dendrites during solidification, Fig. 1. Since this distribution is a direct consequence of the rejection of solute by the growing solid, a diffusional process, the concentration gradients increase with the freezing rate. However, when solidification rate is the only variable in a series of experiments, the interdendritic liquid regions become smaller (i.e., the dendrites become more closely spaced) with an increase in freezing rate. The main purpose of the analytical treatment of interdendritic liquid diffusion will be to reveal a tendency for dendrite spacing to decrease with increasing solidification rate in just such a way that the maximum concentration differences developed in the liquid phase are remarkably independent of freezing rate. Two rather different analyses are set forth, one pertaining to the one-dimensional diffusion which obtains in the interdendritic liquid between parallel plate-shaped dendrites, and the other to the cylindrically symmetrical diffusion around rod-shaped dendrites during early stages of solidification. The results of the two analyses are quantitatively similar, correlating dendrite spacing, maximum concentration difference, and freezing rate. First consider the simpler one-dimensional case. Two parallel plate-shaped dendrites are separated by a distance, L, between centers, Fig. 1. Solidification takes place by the thickening of these plates, with solute being rejected into the liquid. It is assumed there is no diffusion in the solid. This thickening process is slow enough and the dendrite spacing small enough that the concentration differences which develop, although interesting and important, are very small (an important assumption which is verified ex-

IN providing 65,000 tons of broken muck per day for shovel operation in a large open pit copper mine, drilling equipment and efficient use of that equipment is of prime importance. To improve existing drilling efficiencies, a large electric rotary drill capable of drilling 12-in. holes was purchased in May 1955. At Chino 96 pct of the blasting is done with 12-in. holes because: 1) the large holes break the optimum amount of material to reduce trackshifting to a minimum, 2) better fragmentation is obtained from a relatively short column of powder, and 3) longer spacing results in greater tonnage broken per foot drilled. From 1955, when it was purchased, through October 1956, the rotary drill has drilled 95,701 ft at a rate of 167.4 per shift in various locations and types of ground encountered in the mine. (This includes moving time and all other delays while a crew is on the machine.) The machine has been worked two shifts per day, seven days per week, and has been available 68 pct of this time.

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength. IN the last few years additional sintering facilities have been installed in both the Pittsburgh and the Chicago district of the United States Steel Co. Since the construction of these sintering plants made possible the use of higher percentages of flue-dust sinter in our blast-furnace burdens, it became important to study means of controlling the quality of sinter to obtain optimum results in the blast furnace. For controlling an operating process, it is necessary first to establish standards by which the quality of the product can be judged. For sinter, it appeared that an important property was its strength or its resistance to degradation during transportation and charging into the furnace. Consequently work was undertaken to establish a standard for sinter strength that could be used both for controlling sintering-plant operations and for correlating sinter quality with blast-furnace performance. The first problem in setting up a standard was that of procuring a sample that would be representative of the sinter made under any particular set of conditions at the sintering plant. Since the United States Steel Co. sintering plants discharge the finished sinter either into a large pit or onto a rotary cooler, the sinter becomes inseparably mixed with material sintered 2 hr before or 2 hr afterwards. For this reason the exact identity of the sinter is lost. A sample selected as the cooler is discharged, or as the sinter is removed from the pit, cannot be said to be truly representative of the sinter made at any specific time. Sampling The first attempt to procure a sample that would be representative of a specific sinter mix and of specific operating conditions was made by stopping the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine and removing an entire pallet full of sinter. This method, however, proved very difficult to perform and interfered considerably with the operation of the plant. To overcome this difficulty, a sampling method was devised by technologists at South Works enabling them to secure, without interrupting the sintering operation, a sample of about 1 cu ft of sinter, representative of sinter for the full depth of the sintering bed. The South Works method involves the use of a steel-frame-work basket. A typical basket is shown in Fig. 1. The basket has been used both with and without crossbars along the bottom. As long as the crossbars are in the same direction as the grate bars on the sintering machine they do not interfere with the sintering process. The basket is set on an empty grate of the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine before it passes under the swinging feed spout, see Fig. 2. When the basket is removed after it has travelled the length of the sintering machine, it contains the sample. Just before the basket is removed, the sinter is scored and chipped to facilitate removal of the sample from the sinter bed. A view of the basket after its removal is shown in Fig. 3. Although the sampling method was originally designed for use on a Dwight Lloyd sintering machine, it can also be used on the Greenawalt type of machine. When used on the Greenawalt-type machine, the basket is placed on the sintering grate before the charging car passes over it, and finally it is removed just before the pan is dumped. Testing After a method of obtaining a representative sample of sinter had been developed, the next step was to select a method of measuring its strength. The irregular shape and size of the sinter pieces precluded the use of a simple compression test for determining strength; consequently, the shatter test and tumbler test were investigated. To perform the shatter test, a sample of sinter, approximately 5 lb, is dropped from a hinged-bottom box at a height of 3 ft onto a steel plate. The broken sinter is sieve-analyzed after a specified number of drops. The tumbler test is performed with the use of a standard ASTM coke-tumbling drum. The drum is 3 ft in diam and is equipped with two lifter bars diametrically opposite one another on the inner periphery of the drum. The drum is rotated at a speed of 24 rpm for 200 revolutions, and after tumbling the sample is sieve-analyzed. To express as single numbers the results of sieve analyses after shattering or tumbling, the method suggested by R. E. Powers1 was employed. This method involved plotting the size of the sieve openings on a logarithmic scale and the cumulative per cent larger than each sieve on a probability scale as described by J. B. Austin.' THAT veterans are crowding the colleges is no longer news; 78 per cent of the 1916-47 enrollment in mineral industries curricula in the United States were veterans, but the rapid comeback from an estimated 1262 total mineral industries students in 1944-45 to 11,422 in 1946-47 is almost astonishing. The figure, which includes 1008 graduate students, is a substantial increase over the previous top record of 9619 in 1938-39. A small part of the increase is caused by the larger number of women entering the field, of whom there were c 9 in 1916-47. Petroleum leads the curricula with 34.5 % of the enrollment, metallurgy is second with 28%, and mining is third with 18%. Table 1. shows all curricula offered and those accredited by ECPD. Using the Mississippi River as a dividing line, 31 colleges in the East and 27 in the West offer curricula in the mineral industries.

INFORMATION on magnetic properties of minerals other than magnetite is scanty and some- times erroneous. Often there is no information at all. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces published in 1901 is still the best guide in the field, but Crane's data can be used as a guide only, since he ignored such important factors as impurities in the minerals, size, and packing effect. During the 1930's work by the U. S. Bureau of Mines added greatly to knowledge of the behavior of certain minerals in a magnetic field. The USBM bulletin gave for the first time complete magnetic characteristics for magnetite and fragmentary data for a few other minerals. The work reported here covers a study of the magnetic-susceptibility relationships of the wolf-ramite series of minerals and sphalerites as related to their chemical compositions. Theories are proposed to explain divergences found from commonly accepted beliefs.

The important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent-magnet properties. In recent years great advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,' an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron-nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat-treatment, and at this time the ductility of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the mag netic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X 106. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold-worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy 11. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone 5 In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or I1 is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. It is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is associated with the presence of continuous grain houndary paths of either second phase, or solute segregate resulting from solute-vacancy interactions. Experimental observations of structural changes and crrosion behavior of different types of austenitic stainless steel provide support for this poposal. On the basis of this model, it is shown that the intergranular -corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels in nitric-dic hromate solution may be substantially reduced either by suitable heat treatments or by impurity control. AUSTENITIC stainless steels, such as Type 304, generally have excellent corrosion resistant properties when properly solution heat-treated and used at temperatures where carbide precipitation is slow. However, several corrosion environments have been found which produce intergranular corrosion of solu-tion-treated stainless steels, that is, those steels with no detectable carbide precipitation.''2 Of the various corrosion environments, the most widely used test solution has been the boiling nitric-dichromate solution. In these acid solutions, stainless steels have been found to be susceptible to intergranular attack despite the addition of carbide-forming elements such as titanium or columbium, or despite lowering of the carbon content or use of high-temperature solution treatments. Studies of the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion attack have been made by several worke1s3'4 who found that oxidizing ions such as crt6 depolarize the cathodic reactions and consequently raise the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in nitric acids. As a result of this, the anodic reaction is accelerated. The reason for the localization of anodic activity at the grain boundaries, and resulting intergranular corrosion, has not been conclusively determined. Several workers, e.g., Streicher,3 and Coriou et al.,4 have suggested that the strain energy associated with grain boundaries provides the driving force for the accelerated intergranular corrosion. This argument would predict that alloys of high purity would still be susceptible to intergranular attack. However, work by chaudron5 and by ArmijO,6 has shown that high-purity alloys are immune to attack, in disagreement with this argument. An alternative suggestion is that chemical concentration differences exist between grains and grain boundaries, that is, impurity segregation at boundaries, and that these chemical differences provide the driving force for localized attack. It is this impurity segregation which can lead to accelerated dissolution of grain boundaries when the alloy is exposed to a suitable corrodant. This mechanism would predict the immunity of high-purity alloys to inter-granular attack, which is in agreement with experi-mental observations. In the present paper, some recent studies on inter-granular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels which were conducted by coworkers and myself will be re-tibility A simple model will be described in which it is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of aus-tenitic stainless steel is associated with the presence of continuous grain boundary paths of either second phase or solute-segregated regions.* On the basis of this model, it is suggested that the intergranular corrosion rate can be markedly reduced by the formation of a discontinuous second phase at the grain boundaries if the discontinuous second phase incorporates the major part of the segregating solute, drained from the grain boundary region. Results are presented of corrosion tests and electron microscopic studies of different types of austenitic stainless steel after various heat treatments which provide experimental support for this model. Finally, a solute clustering mechanism, based on a solute-vacancy interaction, is shown to be consistent with the results obtained for inter-granular corrosion of solution-treated austenitic stainless steels. EXPERIMENTAL Corrosion tests using weight loss measurements were made on sheet specimens, which were lightly electropolished, washed, and immersed in boiling (115°C) 5 N HN03 containing 4 g crt+6 per liter added as potassium dichromate. Studies in which the inter-granular penetration depth was measured both by electrical resistance and metallographic methods have shown an empirical correlation between the rate of intergranular penetration and the weight loss per unit time for identically treated specimens of stainless steel." As a result, although all the corrosion data reported here are in terms of simple weight loss measurements, these data are considered to reflect primarily the rate of intergranular dissolution. Fig. 1 shows a typical result of intergranular attack of a solution-treated Type 304 stainless steel after 4 hr in a boiling nitric-dichromate solution. The wide grain boundary grooving at the surface, and the attack at incoherent twin boundaries, are evident; very little corrosion attack is seen at the coherent twin boundaries. A method has been developed for continuously measuring the moisture content of coal. The method is based on the thermalization of fast neutrons by hydrogen in the coal. Neutrons from a small radio-isotope source penetrate the coal, are scattered by hydrogen, and measured by a thermal neutron detector. The number of thermal neutrons counted can be directly correlated with the moisture content of coal. In a pilot-scale system, moisture was measured continuously within 0.2% in coal moving at rates up to 20 tph. The method is adaptable in industry for continuously measuring the moisture content of coal at high tonnage flow rates. Such an application would permit continuous recording of moisture in coal without sampling and facilitate quality control. An automatic and continuous method of measuring the moisture content of coal is needed by the coal industry. Automatic control of the coal quality would reduce the cost of coal preparation, improve the product, and thus indirectly increase the use of coal. Moisture in coal can be determined by several methods, but the time required to obtain samples and analyze them by existing methods makes it difficult, if not impossible, to control the quality of the product. Both producers and consumers need a method for continuous and instantaneous measurement of moisture content without sampling in order to regulate process equipment and keep the moisture content of coal within specifications. At the Morgantown, W. Va., Coal Research Center we are developing a nuclear method for continuous measurement of moisture in coal. This method is based on the thermalization of fast neutrons by hydrogen in the water and organic matter of coal. Neutrons from a small radioisotope source penetrate the coal, are scattered by hydrogen, and are measured by a thermal neutron detector. The number of thermal neutrons counted can be directly correlated with the moisture content of coal. Design of a moisture meter based on neutron thermalization depends on many variables, any or all of which can affect the sensitivity of the meter. These factors include those related to the nuclear aspect; type and size of neutron flux and source, type of detecting device, and background count; and those related to the coal being tested: rank, particle size, and ash content. A survey was initiated to eliminate the relatively insignificant factors and to ascertain the magnitude of the major effects. Such information was necessary to fully evaluate the technique and to establish design criteria. Coal contains a relatively large amount of hydrogen in the organic coal substance and the water of hy-dration of the shaly material as well as in the moisture. To apply this concept of moisture measurement to coal requires that the organic substance in coal from any one seam of a particular mine be uniform in hydrogen content. The difference in total hydrogen content of wet and dry coal is relatively small, so that a moisture measurement based on this concept requires a measurement between two large numbers to a high degree of precision. Thus, it was necessary to develop a highly precise instrumentation system for continuous measurement and to obtain a physical arrangement permitting measurement of moving coal with a minimum effect from density variation. EXPERIMENT WITH TRAYS OF COAL Tests were conducted with metal trays containing SO to 100 lbs of coal to develop an instrument system of high precision. A scaling system with a maximum instrument error of 0.2% was used to test different types of thermal neutron detectors. The most suitable type of detector was a boron-10-lined proportional counter tube. While this type of detector showed satisfactory stability, extensive testing disclosed a long-term count reduction probably due to some type of deterioration in the detector. However, development of an electronic system using dual detectors eliminated this deterioration as a serious problem. (The second detector would be used to measure a reference drum of dry coal — the difference in count rate between the wet coal and dry reference coal being a direct measure of moisture content.) Table I, column 1, shows typical results with a 1-curie plutonium-beryllium neutron source and a thermal neutron detector beneath a tray of coal and illustrates the precision of measurement. A germicide should be used to prevent fermentation. Introduction The behavior of drilling mud has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years in numerous research projects dealing with such subjects as chemical treatment, gelation, and filtration characteristics. The importance and control of filtration, or water loss, is readily apparent* It affects the analysis of side-wall cores and interpretation of electric logs; it controls to a large extent the work of primary cementing, reduces the amount of expensive fishing, and permits the running of long strings of casing. It has been found that among the many factors that have an adverse effect on filtration, the presence of electrolytes, in general, and of salt, in particular, is outstanding. The effect is one of flocculation of the colloids due to neutralization of the negative charges on the clay particles. This reaction is further increased on the Gulf Coast because high temperatures reduce dispersion, to a minimum, causing increased flocculation in both fresh-water and saltwater muds. The problem of reducing water loss in salt-water muds by the addition of gums and starch at atmospheric temperature has been investigated,' and many successful field tests in West Texas indicate its solution. From the work of Byck2 it is concluded that no existing method will permit an approximate determination of the filtration rate at high temperatures from data taken at room temperatures. Filtration should be measured at the ternperature actually anticipated in the well, or at least at a number of lower temperatures and extrapolated over a small range. A laboratory study has been made of the chemicals available for the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds at high temperatures, and the use of germicides to prevent fermentation. Laboratory Investigations Procedure Since the purpose of this investigation was to compare several different gums and starches at elevated temperatures, mud from the same source was used for all the tests. Viscosity was measured in a Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. and water loss was determined with a Baroid High-pressure and High-temperature Wall-building Tester3 at temperatures from 80' to 250°F. and at a pressure of 500 lb. per sq. in. for 30 minutes.
