How do you convert a copper-zinc resource into a viable economic mining operation? This problem, unlike most, was complicated by the additional presence of a sub-arctic climate, highest labor costs in the world, low-grade copper-zinc values, depressed market prices, and a complex mineralization.

Development and production activity in Oklahoma during the year 1940 was of routine nature. Production, according to the Corporation Commission's figures, averaged 409,100 bbl. daily as compared with 421,000 bbl. for the year 1939. Discoveries were of minor importance except for the Cumberland pool in Marshall and Bryan Counties, in the southern part of the state. Maintenance of a relatively stable producing rate is attributable to the drilling of new wells and the recompletion of many old wells in the previously established producing areas. During the year 1785 new wells were drilled, a decline of approximately 10 per cent as compared with the previous year. Of the wells drilled, 962 were oil wells with a combined initial production of 241,000 bbl. daily, 172 were gas wells having aggregate capacities of 1205 million cu. ft., and 651 were dry holes. Wildcat activity increased 20 per cent over 1939 and 227 such wells were completed during the year; that isl 43 oil wells, 16 gas wells, and 168 dry holes. In addition to the new work completed, 603 wells were recorded as having been drilled deeper or plugged back to test new horizons; included were 334 producing wells with total initial production of 65,000 bbl. daily, 37 gas wells with initial aggregating 305 million cu. ft., and 232 abandonments. Footage drilled amounted to 4,730,000 ft., an average of 2650 ft. per well as com-pared with an average depth of 2600 ft. recorded the previous year. The principal new pools discovered as a result of the exploratory drilling were Cumberland; East Cromwell, in Okfuskee County, and Prague, in Lincoln County. At the end of the year Cumberland had 13 completed wells, which averaged 700 bbl. initial through tubing from the Simpson Bromide formation (Ordovician) at 4750 ft. East Cromwell had 10 wells with average initial of 435 bbl. in the Cromwell sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3460 ft. Prague had II wells with an initial average of 220 bbl. from the Senora sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3260 ft. There were notable extensions to the Dill pool, Okfuskee County, and to the Hewitt pool, Carter County. At the end of the year, 19 producing wells had been drilled in the former, with initials averaging 1000 bbl., and 63 wells averaging 150 bbl. daily in the latter. There were no notable changes in the policy of State conservation authorities with respect to proration. The Bureau of Mines recommendations for the year averaged 413,000 bbl. daily; the State author-ities fixed allowables at an average of 406,000 bbl. daily, while, as noted above, production averaged 409,100 barrels. The most important development in the older areas occurred in the following pools: Billings.—Seven oil wells with an average initial production of 2500 bbl. and two dry holes were completed during the year. Production from the Simpson horizon averaged 6025 bbl. daily as compared with 5950 the previous year. Production from this field has been almost steady since reaching its peak early in 1937. A new classification of eutectics is proposed, based on tlze entvopies of wzelting of the tuio eutectic phases. The clnssification was used to predict suitable tvansparent analogs of the metallic systems. Experimental confir?nation loas obtained for the theovetical shape of the lamellar solid-liquid interface, fov the fault mechanisms of lanzellar spacing changes, and for the development of low-energy solid-solid boundaries between the lamellae. An explanation is presented to account jov the irvegular and coinplex regular structures zrhich are found in some eritectic systems. FrOM experimental observations, single-phase materials can be divided into two groups according to their solidification characteristics, those that grow as faceted crystals and those that do not. acksonl' showed from thermodynamic reasoning that the type of growth depended on a factor a which was almost thg entropy of melting. Most nonmetals have high entropies of melting (a greater than 2) and grow with crystalline facets. Most metals have low entropies of melting (CY less than 2) and grow almost isotropically with no facets. The authors propose that eutectics may be classified in a similar manner. There are three groups of eutectics, those in which both phases have low entropies of melting, those in which one phase has a high and the other phase has a low entropy of melting, and those in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Lamellar or rodlike structures are formed in systems in which both phases have low entropies of melting. In these alloys dendrites of either phase may be formed, when the alloy is rich in the relevant component. Examples are Pb-Sn, Sn-Cd, Pb-Cd, Sn-Zn, Al-Zn. Irregular, Fig. 14((), or complex regular, Fig. 14(b), structures are formed in alloys in which one phase has a high entropy of melting and the other has a low entropy of melting. Examples are A1-Si, Zn-MgzZnll, Pb-Bi, Sn-Bi. When the alloys are rich in the low entropy of melting phase, dendrites are formed; when the alloys are rich in the high entropy of melting phase, faceted primary crystals are produced. These crystals are sometimes called hoppers or pseudodendrites. In this work the term dendrite will only be used to describe nonfaceted primary crystals. Dendrites are not formed during solidification in high entropy of melting single-phase materials. The third group of eutectics includes alloys in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Each phase grows with a faceted solid-liquid interface. Since most metals do not have high entropies of melting, metallic examples in this eutectic group are rare. However they may occur between some intermetallics and semiconductors or semimetals such as silicon, germanium, and bismuth. Attempts have been made to study eutectic solidification visually by watching the growth process.374 Since metals are not transparent, the observations had to be made on external surfaces. This difficulty can be overcome by using transparent analogs of the metallic systems. As was mentioned earlier, most single-phase compounds have entropies of melting greater than 2 and so grow as faceted crystals. Recently organic materials with entropies of melting less than 2 were investigated.' These materials grow in exactly the same way as the low entropy of melting metals. When the materials are pure, they grow with a solid-liquid interface parallel to an isotherm; when they are impure, cells or dendrites are formed. Since these materials are transparent, have low melting points, and even have cubic structures, they should be ideal for making up transparent analogs of the metallic eutectics. The purpose of the present work was to investigate these organic eutectics and to see whether this quite different series of eutectics could be classified in the same way as the metallic systems. The observations made on the organic alloys are also discussed with reference to the current theories of lamellar growth. Explanations are proposed to account for the structures formed in the other eutectic groups. EXPERIMENTAL Thin cells containing the organic alloys were uni-direction ally solidified on a specially constructed microscope stage.' Uniform growth rates were obtained by moving the cells, with a motor drive, through a fixed temperature gradient, so that the solid-liquid interface remained stationary with respect to the microscope objective lens. The cells were made by fusing two microscope cover slides 7/8 by 7/8 by 1/100 in. together on three sides, leaving a gap of 1 to 3 mils between the slides, and these were filled by surface tension. A preliminary investigation of the phase diagram between two components could be made very rapidly. One side of the cell was filled with component A and the other side with component B. Since only a small amount of mixing could occur every composition from pure A to pure B was present in the cell. When the cell was placed in the temperature gradient a pictorial representation of the phase diagram was obtained. Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

IN spite of considerable interest among blast furnace operators on the question of the penetration of air into the furnace, there is still uncertainty as to how far the blast does, in fact, penetrate. IN order to show the need for gas reserves, their control, and conservation, in California, it is necessary to describe briefly the local conditions under which gas is produced and marketed, to point out the lack of coordination between supply and demand, and to relate the history of efforts to prevent wastage. There are now 24 fields in California producing a surplus of gas over field fuel requirements. They are usually grouped geographically into three divisions, as follows: (I) Los Angeles Basin (Los Angeles and 0 r a n g e Counties), thirteen fields, all casing-head gas. Total daily gas available for sale 125,000, 000 ?cu.ft. (2) Coastal (Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties). Seven casine-head and one dry gas field. total-avail- able daily, 165,000,000 cu.ft. (3) San Joaquin Valley (Kern, Kings, Fresno, and San Joaquin Counties). Four casing-head fields, five dry gas fields, and two producing casing- head and dry gas from different zones. The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374

The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. FROM Aug. 31, 1937, until Apr. 30, 1939, there were 40,872,610 bbl. of oil run to storage in California; from Apr. 30, 1939, to Aug. 31 of the same year 5,512,912 bbl. were withdrawn from storage. But from Aug. 31, 1937, to Aug. 31, 1939, the number of producing wells in the state has increased from 17,706, with a potential production of 1,323,202 bbl., to 18,910, with a potential of 2,302,282 bbl. Thus, in a period of two years, during the first 20 months stocks increased over 1/3 and during the following four months stocks decreased 1/30. In the same two years the number of productive wells increased 1/15 and potential increased 3/4. Undoubtedly, the large increase in stocks created the pressure that caused the reduction in stocks that followed; yet this has come about in spite of the larger number of wells and higher potential. Cause of the change was the adoption on May 17, 1939, by the Central Committee of California Oil Producers of a uniform method of oil curtail-ment for all wells throughout the state. Acceptance of the method in the four months following adoption by practically all fields in California indicates that producers generally are convinced of its merit and fairness. True, some operators still overproduce, but the restraint practiced by the remainder of the industry has been sufficient to turn a situation headed for chaos into one of reasonable stability. Credit for this change goes to the industry itself, because it has all been accomplished under voluntary oil curtailment.

THE phase diagram of the Ge-Te system was first investigated by Klemm and Frischmuth.' They arrived at the phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicating the presence of a peritectic phase boundary at the 50 at. pct Ge composition. Later, Schubert and Fricke2 obtained data which suggested to them the possible existence of a eutectic at about 55 at. pct Ge. In order to resolve these differences, we have carefully studied this system in the region 40 to 60 at. pct Ge using both the conventional thermal analysis technique and a new solidification technique.3y4 The alloys were prepared from semiconductor grade germanium and 99.999+ Te by reacting the elements in evacuated, graphite coated, vycor tubes. The samples were placed in a thermal analysis apparatus described elsewhere4 and cooling curves were taken of each alloy to determine the liquidus surface. Even as the rational selection of excavation equipment requires a matching of machine performance capabilities to rock response characteristics, the functional features of transportation systems must be matched to the characteristics of the materials handled in order to secure optimum, trouble-free operation. In particular, ore passes and chutes must be designed for flow in order to insure controlled draw whenever a chute is opened. The alternative to quantitative design is, of course, the well known ad hoc procedure of freeing plugged ore passes, cleaning up spillage from flooded chutes, etc., after installation of the system. Since the voluminous empirical work sporadically undertaken through the years evidently had not led to reliable design methodology, it seemed worthwhile to attempt a rational and complete description of the movement of material through ore passes. The concepts of de- formable body mechanics applicable to gravity-induced flows of granular media or "soils" were involved. Accordingly, the mathematical theory of soil plasticity was adopted as a working hypothesis, and a two-dimensional laboratory model of an ore pass constructed in order to investigate the appropriateness of the theory. The general experimental strategy consisted of formulating the movement of material in ore passes as a boundary value problem in soil plasticity, determining the required boundary values of stress and velocity experimentally, and then using these data for the initiation of a theoretical solution for stress and velocity throughout the moving mass of material. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental constituted the test of the original hypothesis.

Introduction. THIS study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility-two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten ' and Levol,2 using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleabilitytests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi2O3, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusions of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows "If the protoxide of bismuth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

Naturally, the chief purpose of these structures is to house and support the equipment and other things necessary for or incidental to the conduct of production. hence most of the features of the design were developed to suit these particular conditions; however, several are so generally applicable as to warrant description.

WHEN the drilling of an oil well is completed a permanent opening from the reservoir to the surface must be provided. This is done by lining the hole with pipe, commonly known as casing. In the past, all but a small amount of casing has been run in the hole and joined by threads and couplings. Recently, however, in California, Texas, and Oklahoma, there has been a definite tendency 'to adopt -the welded joint for the following reasons: (1) Plain end casing for welding may be bought for 15 per cent less than thread-and-coupled casing; some of this is offset by the cost of welding the pipe in the hole but a respectable net profit remains.

THE long-hole drill has been used for prospecting underground in the tri-State district for several years, and its value has been pretty thoroughly proved. An attempt was made to get a statement of their experience with the machine from all the operators who were known to have used the machine. The majority of them replied to the questionnaire so that this paper is practically a summary of the experience of the district, together with some practical details taken from the experience of the Eagle-Picher Lead Company. When the drill was first used by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co., it was put in low headings and was mounted on a cross-arm supported by two drill columns. This was found to be a rather awkward method of mounting, because fairly long moves were made and the same drill columns could not be used on any two successive set-ups. The machine was later moved to a mine with high headings so that this type of mounting was found to be impractical. A heavy tripod was tried and found satisfactory, provided care was taken to see that the set-up was solid. The Evans-Wallower Lead Co. and the Century Zinc Co. report using the double post set-up, but the headings are low in these mines. The Commerce Mining St Royalty Co. first used the double-post mounting in high headings by cutting a niche in the wall and setting the post in it. This proved to be a slow and expensive method and was later abandoned for the tripod. The Federal Mining & Smelting Co. has used a tripod throughout its operations. Great care must be taken in using the tripod to see that the set-up is solid. Wherever possible it is advisable to sludge in the legs and let them set a short time before the machine is put into use. Where high bottom is encountered the Eagle-Picher operator found it advisable to drill jack- hammer holes in the bottom and drive the legs into them.

FOUR general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part of the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremyl and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed the presence of large quantities of organic sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown6 attempted the analysis of the pyritic and sulfate sulfur as distinct from the organic forms by means of sodium hypobromite; no definite proof of
