INTRODUCTION Selective flocculation as a method of desliming potash flotation plant feed has been in commercial use since November, 1974.l It was installed to replace a 1ess efficient mechanical desliming process. While most plants operating in the Saskatoon area of Saskatchewan were designed for 4% to 5% insolubles in practise the quantity and quality of the insoluble materials in the ore has been variable. The variability of the ore has contributed to less than optimum efficiency in the desliming and consequently, the potash flotation circuits. This lower than expected efficiency contributed to the commercialization of a patented process2 through large scale pilot plant testing. Referring to published information and experience, the application of selective flocculation-flotation of slimes to sylvinite ores will be compared with the more conventional mechanical methods of desliming. THE ORE The ore beds being mined in the Saskatoon area of Saskatchewan have proven to be much less uniform than originally thought (Figure 1). The insoluble content of the plant feed is variable in both quantity and quality due to two factors, the presence of disturbances and the structural weakness of the mud seams immediately above the ore beds. Some alteration of the insolubles in the vicinity of disturbances has made them more difficult to liberate and makes ore from the disturbed areas less amenable to treatment.

Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author's knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?

DURING late years, the proportion of beileficiated iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior District has increased very rapidly. By benefication is meant washing, screening, drying, sintering or any process by which the grade or structure of the crude ore is improved before shipment. In 1915, only 3,000,- 000 tons, or 9 per cent, of t6e total Minnesota shipment was beneficiated ore, compared with 13,500,000 tons, or 35 per cent, of the total Minnesota shipment in 1925. This increase is, of course, due to the fact that iron and steel can be made more cheaply after beneficiating these ores than they could have been had these ores not been so treated. Fundamentally, however, several causes contribute to the necessity for beneficiating iron ores, such as depletion of the reserves of high-grade ores, the iron ore leasing systems and taxation methods and, at the smelting plants, a better understanding of blast-furnace operations, increased operating costs and increased sulfur content of blast-furnace coke. As economic conditions change, it is by no means certain that the proportion of beneficiated ore shipped each year is going to continue to increase. Undoubtedly some of the beneficiation operations are not economically sound at the present time and what the future has in store for the iron ore industry is problematical. Generally speaking, the cost of fuel for blast-furnace operations will increase as time goes on and in order to continue to produce cheap iron and steel, some of the other costs must be lowered. Freight and labor rates probably can- not be reduced. The cost of producing iron ore cannot be reduced much below the present price. It therefore appears that the best opportunity for maintaining iron and steel prices at their present level in spite of in- creased costs of labor and raw materials is to use. less or cheaper raw materials. This, of course, contemplates an improvement in metallurgical processes all along the line and, as a matter of fact, we can confidently expect these improvements because scientific investigations will undoubtedly be even more productive in the future than they have been in the past.

MOST of the copper mines in Canada are favored by nature in having other metals besides, copper in their ore, which puts them in a most satisfactory competitive position. Noranda ore has an important gold content, Flin Flon gold and zinc, and International Nickel of course has nickel. All of the larger copper companies in Canada operated during 1.933 and the total production of copper exceeded that of the year before. The Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. worked out to succcessful conclusion a three-product flotation process for separating the copper, zinc and iron from its low-grade ore. SOME problems concomitant with commercial exploitation of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service depart-ment wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence. The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character.

COKE and by-products have prime importance in the war program. The past year was marked by the construction of new and the rehabilitation of old by-product and beehive ovens and by the increase of production from existing plants to practically 100 per cent capacity. W. T. Brown's paper, "Plan to Improve Blast-Furnace Coke," presented at the Fuels Conference in St. Louis, Sept. 30, showed how the blending of low- and high-volatile coal improved the physical properties of coke and that improvement of the quality and uniformity of coke favored an increase of blast-furnace capacity- a vital need in the war program. Others in the industry have likewise increased production of coke or recovery of by- products by various innovations or changes in operation. Recognition of the value of pooling these developments for the benefit of the entire industry led to organization of a survey of coke- oven plants and blast furnaces by the Bureau of Mines in co-operation with the Solid Fuels Co-ordinator with a view to improving metallurgical coke production and recovery of by-products. This survey is being conducted with the help of an advisory committee consisting of representatives of the Bureau of Mines, the Solid Fuels Co-ordinator, the War Production Board, and the blast-furnace, coke-oven, and coal-mining industries.

Laboratory displacement tests were performed to study oil recovery elficiency by gravity drainage in fractured systems under miscible conditions. The porous media used were cylindrical Berea and Blue Jacket sandstone cores containing a number of well-defined, artificially formed, vertical and subvertical fractures. Butane and Soltrol 130 were the two miscible fluids used. The purpose of the study was to examine the influences of the displacement rate, fracture density, fracture orientation, fracture permeability, matrix permeability, crossflow, core length and connate water on the oil recovery. It was found that displacement rate, matrix permeability and the subvertical fractures affected oil recovery most. The critical flow rate, based on the matrix permeability, was found to be a significant factor in the process. For displacement rates below the critical flow rate, the oil recovery efficiency appeared to be unaffected by the density of the subvertical fractures. At the high displacement rates, the fracture density becomes important, with the recovery being the most efficient in the core having the greatest number of the subvertical fractures. The magnitude of the fracture permeability, the fracture orientation, the core length and the connate water have little effect on the oil recovery efficiency. INTRODUCTION Gravity drainage under miscible conditions from relatively thick reservoirs can be a very efficient recovery process, especially at low flow rates where the gravity forces are dominant and, consequently, the adverse viscous fingers associated with the unfavorable viscosity ratio are minimized or eliminated. Such a process might involve injection of an LPG or some solvent bank at the crest and then driving the bank with dry gas. For some favorable combination of reservoir temperature, pressure and oil composition, there may be no need to inject any solvent bank, since enrichment of the dry gas by the light ends of the crude creates an in-situ solvent bank. Slobod and Howlett2 have studied the effects of gravity segregation in vertical unconsolidated porous media under miscible conditions in the laboratory. The main variables in their study were the viscosity ratio, the density differences and the rate of flow. In this study, the objective was to find the influence of fractures on gravity drainage under miscible conditions. A greater number of related variables were also studied. LABORATORY STUDY CORE DESCRIPTION Displacement tests were performed mostly in cylindrical Berea sandstone cores. In a few cases in which a much lower matrix permeability was desired, Blue Jacket sandstone cores were used. The vertical fractures were formed by cutting the cores with a thin circular blade or by parting them along a bedding plane. The vertical fracture plane always contained the axis of the cylindrical core. The subvertical fractures, cut with a saw, were inclined 45' from the horizontal. The line of intersection between the planes of the vertical and subvertical fractures was parallel to the circular faces of the cores in all cases except one, as depicted by VF3HF-2 in Fig. 1. Fracture geometry of the other cores is also given in Fig. 1. Tables 1 and 2 give the physical properties of the solid and fractured cores, respectively. The suffixes and prefixes shown for each core have been used throughout the paper so that the reader may discern the fracture geometry from the core numbers.

It is with a certain amount of trepidation that a man considers gathering his family of six, traveling across a continent, two oceans and a sea, and going to live in a foreign land. But "pioneering" is still possible, and a nation is "foreign" only until one has lived in it. We've had eight years of pleasant experiences in South Africa on which to base that contention. It was in January 1938 that my brother first extolled the virtues of South Africa to us, and just three months and a thousand small problems later my wife, two daughters, three sons and I were boarding a ship in New York, bound for Cape- town. We arrived in May, and within a week had found a furnished home with beautiful lawns, tennis, court, a garden, and everything needed for family comfort. The children were soon located in school, and I settled down to the task of entering the importing business, as had been my original intention. The importing business started out slowly but was coming along nicely when on Sept. 3, 1939 the war started in Europe and a declaration of war by the Union of South Africa was made on the following day. With the declaration came import and export controls. In fact we were controlled completely out of business in one stroke. Liquidating the business, I went to Johannesburg intending to find work in one of the mines. Government health and safety regulations require that all underground mine employees have a red ticket from the Miners Phthisis Bureau certifying that they are not susceptible to silicosis, the scourge of the Witwatersrand gold mining industry. I made application to the Bureau, completed a form covering my whole past life, and was given a complete physical examination. The following day I was startled to find that I had not only been refused a red ticket but had been classified with a green ticket which for- ever bars one from working underground in any scheduled mine in the country, and all this in spite

As already announced, the XCIIId meeting of the Institute will be held at Toronto, beginning July 23, 1907. Hotel Headquarters will be at the King Edward Hotel, in which also the sessions will be held. The Queens, Rossin, Wallen, Iroquois and Palmer are good hotels not far from the King Edward. Members must secure their hotel-accommodations beforehand, by direct correspondence with the hotel they select. For those who neglect this precaution, the Local Committee will doubtless do what it can, but is unable to promise anything. Correspondence concerning this meeting (including notices of intention to attend it) should be addressed hereafter exclusively to Mr. W. G. Miller, Provincial Geologist, Bureau of Mines, Toronto, who is the representative of the Local Committee. The excursion to Cobalt, Lake Tenagami, Sudbury, etc., arranged by that Committee, involves the use of a special Pullman train for meals and lodging. After waiting a reasonable time to hear from members, the Local Committee has made its contract for Pullman cars. According to its latest report, there was still room for additional excursionists. Under this head, application made immediately to Mr. Miller may not be too late. Sessions for the presentation of papers, etc., will be held at the King Edward Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, July 23, and Wednesday morning and afternoon, July 24. By the term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal and Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. As part of its overall goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated the feasibility of producing subsieve-size material by an attrition grinding method. The Bureau-patented technique employed intense agitation of a mixture of the material to be ground, a granular grinding media, and a suspending fluid. A variety of materials were successfully ground to extremely fine particle sizes. Studies were made to determine the method's efficiency in grinding industrial minerals and metals to minus 2 micrometers and ceramic powders to an average particle size of 500 angstroms. Transfer of this technology to a commercial scale has been achieved. Commercial-scale units are currently being used in the paper-coating clay and titania pigment industries.

The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. The ß and a ß transformations in plutonium were studied with particular emphasis on the transformation kinetics and microstructure. Significant observations are: 1) The kinetic data show conclusively that the ß — a transformation in high-purity plutonium can proceed isothermally with no athermal component. 2) Plastic deformation of the stable (3 phase retards the subsequent (3 — a transformation. 3) Plastic deformation of the stable a phase accelerates the a — ß transformation; the acceleration is attributed only to residual stresses. 4) The a and a?a volume changes occur anisotroPically in textured plutonium. 5) An apparent crystallogvaphic relationship exists between the parent and the product phases of the and (3 — a transformations. 6) Both applied uniaxial compressive stresses and uniaxial tensile stresses raise the starting temperature for the ß — a transformation. 7) A given uniaxial tensile stress favors the a — ß transformation more than an equivalent applied uniaxial compressive stress opposes the transformation. These observations of the (ß —a and a — ß phase changes in plutonium are consistent with known mar-tensitic transformations. ThIS paper elucidates some of the characteristics of the a— ß and ß —a transformations in plutonium. Because considerable conjecture exists about the mechanisms by which the phase transformations occur in plutonium, experiments have been performed to provide indirect information concerning the mechanisms responsible for the a —ß and ß -a transformations. Indirect information is of particular value in the study of plutonium because of the experimental difficulties presented by the metal. Single crystals have not been produced in any of the allotropes. The large density results in high X-ray and electron-absorption factors and consequently complicating X-ray and electron diffraction. The kinetics of ß — a and a — ß transformations of plutonium and the behavior of the transformations under a variety of conditions have been investigated in detail. Information about the mechanisms of the allo-tropic transformations of plutonium was obtained indirectly from three sources: 1) the effect of plastic deformation of the stable parent phase upon the transformation kinetics; 2) the behavior of the metal transforming under applied stresses; and 3) the microstruc-tural and crystallographic features between parent and product phases. PHASE-TRANSFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS In characterizing solid-state phase transformations in metals and alloys, it is useful to define several types of transformations. An aim of the present work was to identify the low-temperature transformations in plutonium by type, i.e., as martensitic or nonmar-tensitic. Practical definitions for these terms follow. The terms commonly used to categorize phase transformations lack universally accepted definitions. This confusion arises doubtlessly because some terms specify crystallographic or morphological character while other words have a kinetic or a thermodynamic connotation. For example, martensitic specifies certain definite crystallographic restrictions. Unfortunately, martensitic is sometimes used in an ill-defined way to imply kinetic characteristics. Further confusion attends the use of such expressions as nucleation and growth, diffusional, and massive. From time to time new systems of phase-transformation nomenclature are suggested; unfortunately none of these has gained general acceptance.1,2 The authors of the present paper have no intention of entering the controversy. We recognize that some readers may object to the nomencliture used here. For exampie, the terms military and civilian have recently been used in much the same way as martensitic and non-martensitic are used in this paper. This paper is intended to describe several specific details of the low-temperature phase transformations in plutonium. The authors have found it useful to identify these transformations as martensitic; the term was chosen as the best available to describe the experimentally observed features of the transformations studied. A martensitic transformation is one that occurs by the cooperative movement of many atoms; the rearrangement of atoms from parent to product crystal structure occurs by the passage of a mobile semico-herent growth interface. The geometric features characteristic of a martensitic transformation are a specific orientation relationship between the product and parent phase lattices, a specific habit-plane orientation for the growth interface, and a shape change with a specifically oriented shear component. There is no alloy partition between the parent and product phases in a martensitic transformation. Martensitic transformations may display either athermal kinetic behavior or thermally activated isothermal kinetic behavior. Some martensitic transformations occur isothermally, although more commonly martensitic transformations are athermal. Isothermal martensitic transformations are suppressible by rapid cooling. In athermal martensitic transformations, nucleation and growth are not thermally activated and the transformations are essentially time-independent. THE Societá Auonima di Miniere e di Alti Fourni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as those parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Portoferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where even vessels as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio. the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the Company's flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrying coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-rail¬way to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. , 2. Blast furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory appa¬ratus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. WHEN temper rolled low carbon sheet is stored at room temperature before use, changes take place in its mechanical properties. This phenomenon is known as strain aging. Normally these changes are observed by means of Olsen ductility and Rockwell B hardness tests but' unfortunately such tests are relatively insensitive. Strain aging can be readily observed in the laboratory by means of tensile tests. The tensile test method is even more sensitive if the aging is allowed to take place in specimens which have been prestrained in tension rather than by cold rolling. In fact one of the great benefits of commercial temper rolling is that it introduces a residual stress pattern which tends to mask the effects of strain aging when the sheet is finally used in a pressing operation. Curves B, C, and D of Fig. 1 illustrate the changes that take place during the aging of commercial rimmed steel at room temperature following straining in tension, curve A, Fig. 1. The first important change that can be observed is an increase in the stress required to produce plastic flow. This increase is, in this paper, called the aging index. As aging proceeds and the aging index increases, there is also an observable return of the yield point, an increase in the ultimate tensile strength, and a decrease in elongation to fracture. The results of strain aging in deep drawing steel manifest themselves as stretcher strains (L?ders bands) buckling, 2nd tearing. Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig's test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck's path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

Equilibrium ratios C02/C0 of a gas phase coexisting with selected phase assemblages of the system Fe-Mn-0 have been determined in the temperature range 1000" to 1300°C. The oxygen pressure for the "hfnO" +hfn30, equilibrium and for the "(Fe,hTn)O" + (Fe,Mnh 0* equilibrium at high manganese contents has been determined by electromotive force measurements using stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte. The notstoichometry 01' "hTnO" and of "(Fe, iM1z)O" solid solutions has been determined by ther-mog-/avi?netry and by wet-chemical analysis. The data obtained are used to derive activity-composition relations in "(Fe,hfn)O" and (Fe,Mn),O4 solid solutions. WUSTITE "FeO" and manganosite "MnO" form a continuous series of solid solution at high temperatures,' and so do magnetite Fe304 and the high-temperature, cubic modification of Mn304 (Ref. 2) (high hausmannite, -1170). The oxides "FeO" and "MnO" are cation-deficient phases.495 The nonstoi-chiometry of "(Fe,Mn)O" solid solutions has been studied by Engell and ~ohl' at two selected C02/C0 ratios at 1250°C. The two oxide end members of the spinel solid solution, FesO4 and Mn,04, however, are known to be close to stoichiometric under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation.''' The oxygen pressures of "(Fe,Mn)07' solid solutions in equilibrium with iron have been determined by Schenck and coworkers,8 by Foster and welch," and by ~n~e1l.l' The two former groups equilibrated the condensed phases in C02-CO atmospheres of lmown compositions, whereas Engell" used a galvanic cell with stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte. The results of these investigators are not in good agreement. Activities of FeO in manganowiistite as calculated from the results of Foster and Welch show ideal behavior, those of Engell yield a pronounced positive deviation, and those of Schenck et 01. show a moderate positive deviation from ideality. In the present work oxygen pressures for the iron + manganowiistite and manganowustite + spinel equilibria and the nonstoichiometry of manganowiistites have been measured. The data were used to calculate activities in the manganowiistite and spinel solid solutions. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The COz/CO ratios at which manganowustite and iron are in equilibrium were determined by thermo-gravimetric and quenching methods. Experimental details are described in a previous publication.'2 In the thermogravimetric technique, incipient reduction of manganowiistite pellets to metallic iron was observed as a break in the weight vs log COZ/CO curve. In the quenching technique, manganowiistite samples were partially reduced to metallic iron, or the metallic iron of manganowustite + metallic iron mixtures was partially oxidized to manganowustite, in atmospheres of constant C02/CO ratios. After quenching the composition of the oxide phase was determined by X-ray lattice parameter measurements and comparison with a standard curve obtained from oxide solid solutions of known compositions. The nonstoichiometry of "MnO" and "(Fe,Mn)07' solid solutions was determined by chemical analysis of samples equilibrated in C02-CO atmospheres and quenched to room temperature, as well as thermo-gravimetrically by reducing (Fe,Mn),04 or Mn304 to manganowiistite or manganosite. The equilibrium between manganowiistite and (Fe,Mn),04 was measured thermogravimetrically by reducing (Fe,Mn),04 solid solutions having composition in the range of %„ l(NFe +NM) from 0 to 0.63. No experiments could be performed with this technique at higher manganese contents, because the equilibrium C02/C0 ratios are too large for accurate control. An additional difficulty arises at the higher manganese contents due to the strong increase in oxygen content of the manganowustite phase with increasing log Py near the manganowiistite-spinel boundary. Consequently a sharp break in the weight loss vs log C02/CO curve cannot be observed at the phase boundary. At high manganese contents of the manganowiistite, e.g., (NMn/(NF~ + NMn) > 0.9, electromotive force measurements with stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte were made to determine the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure. Experimental details are described in a previous paper.* Mixtures of "(Fe,Mn)O" and (Fe,Mn),04 were pressed to pellets, and the oxygen pressure of the equilibrated samples was compared to that of Ni + NiO mixtures in the cell The composition of the manganowiistite in the equilibrated two-phase mixture was determined by lattice parameter measurements and comparison with known standards. The oxygen pressure for the Ni + NiO equilibrium was taken from available data.l3~l4 No reliable results were obtained with the electromotive force technique on iron-rich oxides. Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of quartz with oleic acid as collector and barium, calcium, aluminum, iron, and tin as activators were studied using a simple vacuum-flotation technique in glass-stoppered graduates. The detailed study of barium activation led to an interpretation based on ideal Langmuirian chemi-sorption. FLOTATION of quartz is of practical importance as something to be avoided in soap-floating many types of ores. Clean, unactivated quartz is not floated with fatty acids and soaps, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate, in the quantities normally used for flotation. However, data in the literature indicate that almost any multivalent cation will activate quartz if given an opportunity. Thus, a common problem is to prevent activation of quartz by the various inorganic cations inevitably present in flotation pulps. Wark and his coworkers1 have demonstrated the reversibility of the chemical reactions and adsorptions involved in the activation, depression, and collection of the common sulphide minerals. The procedure in much of their work was to bring a mineral surface to equilibrium with solutions of known pH, collector concentration, and activator concentration, and then to test the floatability of the mineral by contact-angle measurement. From the data, graphs were constructed with pH and reagent concentrations as coordinates. These graphs show fields of flotation and fields of nonflotation, separated by narrow transition regions whose locations are shown by so-called contact curves. From the shapes and locations of the contact curves, which roughly separate fields of flotation from fields of nonflotation, a quantitative understanding of the interaction of the reagents with each other and with the minerals often can be deduced. The study of quartz flotation to be described in this paper follows in broad lines the approach of Wark and coworkers. That is, pH, activator concentration, and collector concentration were varied to find equilibrium conditions of flotation and non- flotation, and the results are presented graphically by means of contact curves. However, instead of testing for floatability by measuring the contact angle on a polished surface, a simple vacuum flotation technique was developed and used. Purified oleic acid was the collector and terpineol the frother. Barium activation was studied in some detail, and exploratory studies were made of activation with calcium, aluminum, ferric iron, and stannic tin. Preparation of Materials Quartz: Large lumps of high-grade vein quartz were crushed dry in a cone crusher and rolls. The —20, +28-mesh portion was screened out and used in the subsequent steps. This material was passed through a high-intensity magnetic separator to discard iron, then leached twice with hot concentrated HCl and washed repeatedly with distilled water. The cleaned sand was then wet ground with porcelain balls in a porcelain pebble mill, deslimed repeatedly by settling and decantation to discard —800-mesh material, and again washed with hot HCl followed by distilled water. The resulting stock of quartz was stored under water. Chemical analysis gave 99.8 pct SiO2. Table I gives the size analysis of the quartz used for flotation tests. Calculations from these data, using shape factors given by Gaudin and Hukki9 indicate a specific surface of about 500 cm2 per g. Blank flotation tests in distilled water, and in water with added frother, showed the prepared quartz to be completely nonfloatable and thus indicated the absence of organic contamination.
