Phase diagrams for the Ti-W and Ti-Ta systems were determined. The Ti-W system is characterized by a wide, two-phase region of ß plus tungsten which is derived from a peritectic reaction between the liquid and tungsten solid solutions. The ß field terminates in a eutectoid reaction between a titanium and tungsten terminal solid solution. Tantalum and ß titanium form a complete series of solid solutions. Other features of this system are the extensive a-ß field at low temperatures and an appreciable solubility of tantalum in a titanium. BOTH tungsten and tantalum were first thought to form ß-isomorphous systems with titanium as a result of early work' using powder-metallurgical techniques. Later work2 on arc-melted Ti-Ta alloys, made using a commercial titanium base, showed that, in the range of 0 to 10 pct, tantalum was soluble in ß titanium and that the a solubility extended to between 2 and 5 pct Ta at 790 °C. The present investigation covered the entire alloy range in both systems and was chiefly concerned with high-purity alloys at the titanium-rich end. The constitution of titanium-rich alloys made with a commercial titanium base was reported by Holla-day, Kura, and Jackson.3, 4 As will be shown in detail later, the early prediction of a isomorphism was true for the case of the Ti-Ta system, but not for the Ti-W system. The results of this investigation will be presented first. The experimental methods used are described in the Appendix. Ti-W System The entire Ti-W phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Details of the titanium-rich side are shown in Fig. 2. The chief features of the system are a ß eutectoid and a high-temperature peritectic between liquid and tungsten solid solution. Melting Range: Examination of cast structures of low and medium-tungsten-content ingots showed cored ß phase as the primary constituent. Fig. 3a illustrates a typical cast structure for alloys in the range of 20 to 30 pct W. From 30 to 72 pct W, coring was very severe. Alloys containing 72 through 88 pct W, however, showed definite evidence of a peritectic reaction between the liquid and a terminal solid solution of titanium in tungsten. Fig. 3b shows the cast structure for an 80 pct W alloy. A 95 pct W alloy, shown in Fig. 4, consisted primarily of primary tungsten solid solution plus a small quantity of ß probably rejected during cooling. Incipient-melting experiments located the peritectic temperature between 1850" and 1900°C and indicated that the reacting phases are liquid containing about 25 pct W and tungsten terminal solid solution containing about 8 pct Ti. THE application of other than mechanical methods to the study of the mechanical-physical properties of metals has become in the last few years a topic of investigation of ever-increasing interest, both from the theoretical standpoint and from that of the engineer and constructor. Besides the investigations which have been made of 'the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals, in their relation to the mechanical properties of these metals, which will be discussed more in detail below, there have been made studies of other phenomena in the same relation, and methods for the mechanical testing of metals have even been suggested, for example, the microscopic method of Tammann,1 and the thereto-electric, method of Turner2 for determining elastic limits. The application of all such methods, which are based upon the dependence of some physical, crystallographic, or possibly chemical property, upon the mechanical state of the metal, must be preceded by close and careful correlation of these various "test" properties with the known mechanical state of the different metals or materials. It is with this view that the present work, as well as that of many previous investigators of, what .may be termed in the interests of brevity, the mechanical-magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials of construction, has been done.

It was noticed early by operators that high recoveries and flocculation of the sulphide minerals were closely correlated in agitation-froth flotation. Later, this readily visible flocculation was found almost invariably to be due to the binding together of the oiled sulphides by minute air bubbles, and is now known to be characteristic of pulps in which at least one of the mineral species is coated with an insoluble collecting oil. In 1930 it was reported1 that in differential flotation a correlation exists between Brownian movement of particles in the pulp and their nonfloatability, and that Brownian movement and dispersion are likewise correlated, whence it would appear to follow that dispersion of a mineral particle in a flotation pulp denotes a particle condition unfavorable to flotation. In 1934 it was postulated2 that Brownian movement, dispersion and nonfloatability all flow from the condition of the surface of the dispersed particles. It was also postulated at that time that the surfaces of dispersed particles are ionized, the ionized compound being a product of reaction between a component of the particle and a component of the pulp, of a mass solubility of the general order of a fraction of a milligram to I 5 to 20 mg. per liter. It was then further asserted, and has since been confirmed by Bankoff,3 that sulphides so conditioned with soluble collectors as to be floatable flocculate without the intervention of air bubbles as binding media. The present paper comprises an inquiry into the nature of the bound and counter ions in zinc sulphide dispersed by sodium arsenate. A part of its findings was mentioned in the 1934 paper above cited.= The tests show that: I. When powdered granular zinc sulphide is immersed in aqueous solutions of sodium arsenate, arsenate ion is abstracted from solution and anchored to the solid surface, while sulphate and lower sulphoxy ions are concurrently displaced therefrom in substantially stoichiometric quantities. 2. The ion counterbalancing the anchored arsenate ion is zinc. 3. Dispersion and Brownian movement of zinc sulphide are concurrently maxima at an arsenate-ion concentration lying between 0.01 and 0.001-molar sodium arsenate. 4. Any condition or reaction that tends. to remove the zinc arsenate coating from the zinc sulphide particles decreases dispersion and Brownian movement concurrently. Experimental Three samples of zinc sulphide were used. Lot I was C.P. zinc sulphide, washed well be~ond absence of chloride, as shown by test with silver ion. Lot 2 was prepared by precipitation from hydrochloric acid solution of arsenic-free zinc, and was washed as lot I. Lot 3 was prepared by heating a portion of lot 2 in absence of air at 1200° to r300°C. for one hour."

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE investigation herein described was carried out for the purpose of studying, both by chemical and metal-lographical means, the extent of over-oxidation of steel that can be accomplished by excessive over-blowing in a Bessemer converter. In addition there are appended some results of basic. open hearth and crucible steels. Remarks on Chemical Methods. The test block used was hemispherical in shape, 4.5 in, in diameter and 2 in. thick. Drillings for analysis were obtained by drilling through the entire solid part of the. block, carefully avoiding all cracks anti blow-holes and mixing these drillings thoroughly. Drillings were carefully examined for scale and the finest were gone over with a microscope to be sure all scale from whatever source had been. removed. Oxygen was determined by the well-known method of Ledebur, modified according to Cushman,1 with, however, the removal of the preheating tube, which was found unnecessary. This method has been found to give concordant results. Blanks run from 0.0003 to 0.0006 g. Duplicate determinations varied not more than 0.001 to 0.003 per cent. It seems to be generally supposed that the hydrogen method gives only that oxygen which is combined with iron. Whether this be true or not, the content of oxygen existing as iron oxide no doubt predominates sufficiently, so that the result obtained is sufficient to indicate whether the steel is over-oxidized or not.

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.1,2 Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. The liquid-solid cyclone has been recognized as one of the most efficient fine size classifiers available to the mining industry. THE crushing of ore, as defined by Taggart,1 is "usually a stage process, utilizing . . . machines especially suitable for the reduction of particular sizes... . down to a final stage, employed for the reduction of the finest sizes. . .. In contradistinction, comminution to 20-mesh or finer is called grinding. There is a twilight zone in which the product is 6, 10, or 14mesh limiting size which is either crushing or grinding. . .. " Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. Typical of the latter operation is: (I) a description by F. J. Tuck2 in which a fine-crushing rod mill replaced crushing rolls and (2) a description by the present authors3 in which a fine-crushing rod mill was installed instead of a conventional fine-crushing machine. The experience of the authors is that a definite distinction must be made between the rod mill functioning as a fine crusher and as a fine-grinding machine. As a fine-crushing machine it prepares * relatively large amounts of ore for a subsequent fine-grinding operation; as a grinding machine, it grinds relatively small amounts of ore to some predetermined finished product. PULP MOVEMENT AND ACTION IN MILL In considering the work performed by a fine-crushing rod mill, it seems important to understand just what takes place within the mill. We were inspired to study this matter by a paper by E. W. Davis,4 which indicated that definite water classification of ore particles took place in a ball mill. However, in thinking of the rod-mill action from this point of view, we were confronted with the fact that our rod-mill discharge product showed no evidence of action by water classification. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals. [ ]

THIS paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium) relations have been deter-mined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and alu-minum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith? suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extent 1,2,3. The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are dis-tinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns.

In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Because of this limited success, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. As a result of these calculations, it was concluded that autoradiograPhy is a rather insensitive technique to measure grain boundary segregation. The range (energies) of the emitted particles (ß and a) must be low, and the concentration of the radioactive speczes at the grain boundary must be (in general) two or three orders of magnitude greater than the concentration within the grain. Because of these very restricted conditions , the limited success of the technzque is not surprising. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Sulfur segregation in iron1 and possibly polonium segregation in Pb-5 pct B1 2 alloys are the only autoradi-ography experiments that have demonstrated segregation to grain boundaries in metals without the formation of a second phase. Segregation to a boundary without the formation of a second phase is often called Gibbs' absorption and is discussed by McLean in Chapter 5 of Ref. 10. There are several394 experiments showing grain boundary diffusion of a radioisotope, but this type experiment is not representative of equilibrium between the concentration of an element at a grain boundary and that in bulk, so it will not be discussed in this paper. In an attempt to determine if temper embrittle ment of low-alloy steels was associated with segregation of antimony to grain boundaries, a program to use auto-radiography (using Sb-125) was initiated. Even though other measurements strongly suggest that segregation is occurring during embrittlement, no evidence of grain boundary segregation was observed in the auto-radiography experiments. An attempt was also made to detect segregation of carbon (using C-14) to grain boundaries in iron during slow cooling. There is again strong indirect evidence7 that segregation occurs during such a treatment, but the autoradiography experiment gave no evidence of such segregation. Because of the failure of these experiments and the general lack of success by our metallographic unit in measuring grain boundary segregation using autoradi-ography, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. MODEL SYSTEM The model system is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It is a semi-infinite bicrystal with a single grain boundary perpendicular to the top face. The width of the grain boundary, W, is defined as the region to which segregation has occurred and it is assumed that this region is of constant composition. The assumption of an infinite dimension is for mathematical reasons but the results of such an analysis (as will be demonstrated later) are valid for even very small specimens. It also is assumed that the measurement is not limited by means of detecting the radiation (photographic emulsions, counters, and so forth) but that the means of detecting radiation is linearly sensitive to the radiation and has infinite resolving power. The distance y is the perpendicular distance from the center of the grain boundary to the point at which the background radiation is measured and x is the integration variable. CALCULATION FOR BETA PARTICLES Two values of the intensity of radiation will be calculated, the intensity at the center of the grain boundary and the intensity far from the grain boundary. The radiation at the center of the grain boundary can be calculated in the following way. Assume a grain boundary of width W having a uniform concentration equal to Cgb + Cb where CGb is the excess concentration of the element under consideration at the grain boundary and Cb is the bulk concentration. The intensity of radiation, IgB, at the center of the grain boundary, is a consequence of the amount of radioactive material, decay rate, absorption, and geometrical factors which can be represented mathematically by the following expression:

AST fall over half a million tons of ore and rock were broken in one blast at the open pit of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company's operation, at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The following particulars of the blast, and details of the preparatory work, indicate how an operation of this scope is carried out. The data given, in essentially the present form, were first published by The Canadian Mining Journal. The area blasted was 150 ft. wide and about 700 ft. long. A total of 123 tons of 50 per cent forcite gelatin, in 5 by 16-in. cartridges, was used for the charge. Drilling for the blast was started on May 29, and was completed late in August, requiring 1297 machine shifts for drilling only. Total footage drilled for the shot was over 5 miles of 6-in. hole. The main blast consisted of 232 holes spaced on 17.5-ft.

I T is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uni¬form bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants deducting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets.

AS methods for measuring fiber textures become more exact, it becomes justifiable to scrutinize an observed pole-density curve for evidence of minor texture components. These are disclosed by minor maxima or abnormally broad major maxima. One possible source of these minor components is twinning of the main component. In cubic metals and alloys, there are two kinds of twins: 1) Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals. These are reflection twins on {Ill), and they can be expected to be present in recrystallization textures. 2) Deformation twins in body-centered cubic metals. These are shear twins on (112). Although usually formed only by impact, they might conceivably be present in the deformation texture of severely cold-drawn wire. Fortunately, both kinds of twinning lead to the same orientation relationships. It thus becomes possible to prepare a single list of angles between various planes in parent crystal and twin, which is helpful in examining pole-density curves for evidence of twinning in any cubic metal or alloy. Such a list of interplanar angles is given in Table I. This table consists of three parts, corresponding to the three major texture components—<100>, <110>, and <111>-most commonly found in the fiber textures of cubic metals. The common formula for the adiabatic compression of dry air does not account for heat suficient to flash ordinarily decent cylinder-oils, nor do the text-books include in their theoretical statements any quantitative consideration of the effect of leaks in the ideal machines which they contemplate. The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcrop- pings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined.

THE gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transforma-tion rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data, on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2 since then several important papers have appeared. Our present, knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-cen-tered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-Centered alpha lattices in tampered martensite. The orientation relationship observed in the latter case may be stated in terms of planes and directions observed to lie parallel in the two lattices: { 111 }Y//{110}a [110]Y//[111]a

Exploratory work was conducted in the fabrication of integrated circuitry, specifically linear amplifier circuits, by three general methods: 1) monolithic diffused silicon; 2) a combination of metal thin-film and monolithic diffused silicon; and 3) a hybrid of metal films and diffused silicon on an alunina substrate. In these linear amplifier integrated circuits the followzng conditions were desired: very high-frequency response, high voltage gain, and good thermal tracking stability of electrical characteristics. The resulting circuit designs imposed problems of isolation between elements, layout and smallness of size of active elements, and close tolerances on electrzcal characteristics of the passive elements. Interconnection problems for specific designs resulted from the small dimensions involved and the topography of the hybrid fabrication techniques. The desired integrated-circuit characteristics were achieved with the technologies of categories 2 and 3 above. Solutions to the problems imposed by these characteristics lay in the ability to isolate czrcuit elements of small size while providing a layout designed to minimize element-to-element variations. Sufficient freedom in the formation of passive elements was achieved by uniting the metal film and the monolithic silicon technologies. The most satisfactory designs were based on the beam-lead interconnection and isolation technique. SINCE the advent of integrated circuits, major emphasis has been on fabricating digital integrated circuits. Linear circuits require high performance, high voltage, and tighter tolerance components which are not always compatible with the capability of process technology available for fabrication of these circuits into integrated form. Fortunately the growth of newer and improved processes and materials for fabricating integrated circuits has been an accelerated one. This has now made possible the translation of stringent performance requirements of the linear circuits into microminiature integrated circuits of the same performance. In the exploratory work of fabricating high-performance Linear Integrated Circuits—LIC, the following objectives were formulated: i) fabrication of high-frequency transistors such as the type 2N918 isolated on a single silicon substrate; ii) fabrication of medium-frequency transistors having a very high gain at low collector currents such as the types 2N930/2N2484 isolated on a single substrate ; iii) fabrication of tight-tolerance, high-valued resistors having low temperature coefficients of resistance and stable thermal tracking characteristics, these resistors to be fabricated on an active or passive substrate; iv) simultaneous fabrication of complementary transistors—pn and pnp-on the same silicon substrate; v) fabrication of newer active elements such as MOS, FET transistors along with the conventional active and passive elements on the same silicon substrate. State-of-the-art assessment f all the available processes, materials, and technology to meet above objectives indicated that economic fabrication of LIC cannot be achieved by a single technology for all types of linear circuits. Where design and performance of a given linear circuit can be modified and tolerated to the extent of a particular technology, then alone is it possible to fabricate a LIC using a single process technology such as all diffused, planar technology. In order to evaluate this economic breakpoint with design and performance compromise in fabricating LIC, it is essential that a thorough understanding be obtained of techniques, potentials, and limitations of all the various process technology and materials

SINCE so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1 was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched speci-mens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270° and 350° C. The complete boundary in this region could not be deter-mined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram.

Sputtered aluminum thin films were prepared in each of two conventional bell-jar vacuum systems. One system utilized an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure; the second system was a standard diode sputterirlg arrangement. Consistent and repeatable film properties were obtained in both systems provided sufficient cleanup and presputter time was allowed. The various problems associated with aluminum sputtering are discussed, with pavticular attention to the vzinimization of film contamination by outgassing and oxidation. The growth and structure of the aluminum thin films were studied with the aid of electron wzicroscopy and related to deposition rate, substrate temperature, and film thickness. The resistivity of the films was correlated to film structure and surface roughness. Resistiuities as low as 3.5 microhm-cm (2.3 x bulk resistiuity) were measured for relatively thick films (20,000). THIS investigation was undertaken to explore the problems and film characteristics associated with the sputtering of aluminum. Earlier work reported on aluminum sputtering has stressed the contamination of both the cathode and film as well as abnormally low deposition rates.&apos; Data on sputtering yields,3 however, indicate that aluminum sputtering could be practical. Recently, it was shown by Theuerer and Hauser3 that aluminum sputtering was feasible in a conventional oil-diffusion pumped vacuum system provided an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure was employed to minimize gaseous contamination. This technique employs the getter action of aluminum to produce extremely low reactive gas partial pressures in the deposition zone. Aluminum films have already found use in solid-state electronic devices such as transistors and integrated microcircuits. To the present time, most aluminum films have been prepared by evaporation due to the ease with which this metal can be evaporated. Controlled sputtering of aluminum offers a number of advantages over evaporation, however, such as 1) manufacturing compatibility with other metals which must be sputtered, 2) better control of process variables resulting in more repeatable and uniform films, 3) generally better adhesion resulting from higher-energy metal atoms, 4) built-in material supply for continuous operation, and 5) the ability to deposit alloys. The data presented in this paper are the result of two separate studies. One study utilized a small "getter sputtering" enclosure (System A) and was concerned with the structure and properties of thin aluminum films up to about 1600A thick. In this thickness range, study of the film structure was possible with transmission electron microscopy. The second study was conducted with a conventional diode sputtering apparatus (System B) and covered $ much wider range of film thickness up to about 34,000A. Emphasis was placed on developing techniques which would extend aluminum sputtering to an existing in-line continuous deposition process.4 I) EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE System A. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the "getter sputtering" inner chamber used and Fig. 2 is a photograph of this chamber mounted on an 18-in. access ring of a standard liquid-nitrogen trapped bell-jar vacuum system. This chamber was designed after a similar system used by Theuerer and auser.3 The configuration allowed the glow to emanate in all directions from the cathode. Argon (99.99&apos;) was allowed to enter only at the top of the chamber such that most of the reactive gases entering with the argon were reacted with the aluminum vapor and deposited on the chilled walls of the chamber before reaching the deposition zone. Provision was also made as shown, Fig. 1, for heating and cooling the substrate from about 20" to 400°C. WHATEVER the outcome of the Industrial Recovery Act, it has currently injected the first hope and optimism into the coal industry for more than a decade. Compared with the recent drab years the results are impressive: Bituminous production for the first ten weeks, 78,000,000 tons, may be compared with 63,000,000 last year; anthracite, 14,600,000 tons and 9,600,000 tons for the same periods, respectively, bringing the heaviest payrolls in ten years with individual checks reminiscent of former boom times. Hurried calls for long deferred new equipment and replacements have stimulated foundry and machine works and the -invigorating effect on the railroads is indicated by the first actual car shortage in a decade. And even in the welter of confusion over code prices, this heavy tonnage has moved at the most profitable figure the coal man has realized for many years, though with the large volume on old contracts, profits were not as large as many think.\
