The crystallographic orientation relationships resulting when lead is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge were determined. For each nucleating agent several definite orientatioz relationships were found. These relationships seemed to be controlled by good symmetry relations and low crystallographic disregistry between mating planes. For any given nucleating agent the under colling for nucleation was found fairly constant and independent of the orientation relationship and consequent disregistry. It was also found that, upon re melting and refreezing the Pb, the orientation relationship was changed. These findings prove that crystallographic disregistry is not the controlling factor in heterogeneous nucleation from the liquid. The results of this investigation tend to confirm the theory presented in a preceding paper that heterogeneous nucleation starts with the formation of an adsorbed layer of nucleated metal on the nucleat-ing impurity. Evidence is given that cavities in the nucleating agent act as centers of nucleation. IT has long been known' that solid extraneous particles are active in catalyzing phase transformations that occur in a system, particularly condensation and crystallization. It is well established that these heterogeneities act as catalysts by providing surfaces upon which nuclei of the precipitating phase can form with activation energies smaller than those required for homogeneous nucleation. Numerous investigations have shown that in this process of heterogeneous nucleation: a) the nucleus forms with one, or several, definite crystallographic orientation relationships with the nucleating phase2-4 and b) that there is a small range of undercoolings or super saturations characteristic of the nucleation of a given solid on a given Substrate.5-10 Turnbull and vonnegut11 have developed a theory based on theories developed by Volmer12 and Turn-bull and Fisher1= for heterogeneous nucleation from gases and liquids, that relates the super saturation or undercooling required for nucleation to the dis-registry between the lattices of the nucleus and the nucleating agent. This theory predicts that nucleation should occur with the orientation relationship between the nucleus and nucleating agent that minimizes the disregistry. Further, it predicts that the undercooling or super saturation necessary for nucleation should be a function of the disregistry. Numerous investigations have dealt with the orientation relationships resulting from the condensation of vapors onto crystalline solid substrates2,3 and a few with the nucleation of one phase by a second phase in solidification4,14. Others have dealt with the supersaturation8-10 and undercooling5-7 associated with nucleation in condensation and solidification respectively. However, there is virtually no report that gives both of these factors for the same system. In this investigation a study was made of the undercoolings and orientation relationships resulting when Pb is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge. It was the purpose of this investigation to check the Turnbull-Vonnegut theory, i.e., the importance of crystallographic disregistry between nucleating catalyst and nucleated metal. The results indicate that disregistry is not an important factor in nucleation and that the nucleation process is probably somewhat more complex than current theories suggest. EXPERMENTAL PROCEDURE Small single crystals of nickel, copper, silver, and germanium were prepared from materials of four to five nines purity, and the Pb used was also 99.999+ pet pure. Cu and Ag single crystals were prepared by sealing small chips of Cu or Ag in an evacuated quartz capsule and heating the capsule at 2000°F for 1 hr before cooling. Nickel crystals of 200 diam were also prepared in evacuated quartz capsules, but melting was done by heating the capsules in an oxy-acetylene flame for a few minutes. The process of crushing ore in cyanide solution was first used at the Crown mine, New Zealand, in 1897, by Mr. F. R. W. Daw; and, two years later, Mr. John Hinton tried it experimentally at the old Dakota plant, Central City, South Dakota. To Mr. Hinton belongs the credit of introducing this important modification in the Black Hills, this being its first successful application in the U. S., and its results have been so satisfactory that it has become established as the proper manner in which to treat the dense oxidized siliceous ores of this district. Five mills are now crushing ore in cyanide solution, namely, the Horseshoe, 120 stamps (60 in operation); the Dakota, 30 stamps; the Maitland, 40 stamps; the Hidden Fortune, 60 stamps; the Lundberg, Dorr & Wilson, one 6-ft. Monadnock roller-mill; and several others intend to adopt this practice. The dry-crushing process still holds its place for the treatment of the more porous and open siliceous ores; and two mills continue to dry-crush dense siliceous ores. Character of the Ores. The occurrence of the ores of the Cambrian strata in the northern Black Hills has been frequently described.' In practice they are classified, according to their appearance, into " red " and " blue " ores, the former being oxidized and the latter unoxidized. At the present time, usually the red ores only are treated at the mills, although occasionally small quantities of blue ore, which have become intimately mixed with the red in mining, are included. Generally the extraction of values by the direct treatment of raw ore is from 70 to 75 per cent. for red ores, and from 25 to 50 per cent. for blue ores. There are four main requirements to be considered in selecting a wire rope that will provide the best service. A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and choosing a rope with qualities that will best enable it to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A Good Rope Choice Matches Strength with Stress A wire rope should be (1) strong enough to sup- port the maximum load anticipated with a proper safety factor, (2) able to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires, (3) able to withstand surface abuse such as abrasion, pounding, and wire scrubbing, and (4) able to take abuse such as crushing and distortion.

AT A meeting of the Boston Local Section of the Institute, on Oct. 3, approval was voted to the work done by its representatives on the Committee opposing the passage of a bill by the, Massachusetts Legislature to license engineers. The report is as follows: The Joint Committee on Licensing of Engineers, which included a Committee of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers and representatives of seven other societies,* submitted to the members of the respective societies, on Jan. 8, 1921, a report in which it was stated that on Jan. 4, 1921, a petition was filed in the Legislature of Massachusetts by the Boston Chapter of the American Association of Engineers accompanied by a bill to provide for the registration of professional engineers and land surveyors. This report also stated that at a meeting of this committee, held on Jan. 7, 1921, it was voted:

Many materials including rocks, ice, metals and their alloys, wood, etc., emit transient vibrations in the audible and subaudible range when stressed. In rocks, this phenomenon is referred to as "microseismic activity, " "rock noise, " or " seismo-acoustical activity. " In metals this phenomenon is often termed "acoustic emission." Each individual microseismic disturbance is generally referred to as a "microseismim" or an "elastic shock." The terms "microseismic activity" and "microseismim" will be employed exclusively in this chapter. Microseismic activity has been observed in many rocks loaded experimentally in the laboratory.1 The form of a group of typical microseismims is shown in Fig. 1. Quantitatively, the microseismic activity in rock under stress is most commonly described by the number of microseismims observed per unit time. This is commonly known as the "noise rate." The noise rate in general increases with increasing stress level and rises sharply just prior to failure of the material.2 The origin of microseismims is not well understood, but it appears to be related to processes of deformation and failure which are accompanied by a sudden release of strain energy. In a polycrystalline material, microseismims may originate at the micro-level as a result of dislocations or at the macro-level by twinning, grain boundary movement, or initiation and propagation of fractures through and between the grains. It is assumed that the sudden release of stored elastic strain energy accompanying these processes generates a stress wave which travels from the point of origin, within the material, to a boundary where it is observed as a

Shipments from United States mines1 in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 The concentration of the coarser sizes presents relatively little difficulty, good recoveries being obtained with jigs and tables. The effect of transitiorz element bitzary solid solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of columbium has been investigated. The elements Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, W, Re, and 0s OWY the yecystallization tempel-aturye, while Ti, V, CY, zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Ir, and Pt mise it. A correlation is kloted between the rate of chatzge of recyystallization tewaperature with atomic hercent solute and the free atom electron configuration of the solute element. The work of Abrahamson and Grant1 has indicated a correlation between the free atom ground-state electron configuration and the change in brittle-ductile transition temperature per atomic percent solute in chromium base alloys. A similar correlation was observed for the change in the recrystallization temperature of iron base alloys by Abrahamson and Blakeney and Abrahamson. It was also observed that the limit of rapid change in recrystallization temperature also Correlated with the electronic configuration of the free solute atom. A further study by Abrahamson4 established the generality of the phenomenon by yielding similar results for vanadium base dilute alloys. It has been inferred that a peri- odicity might be expected with changes in the free atom electron configuration of the solvent element. This study is the third set of transition base metal systems to be studied. It is the object of this and further studies on transitional metal systems to detect any systematic variations in the observed correlation which might contribute to the understanding of the electron interactions which are evidently exhibiting themselves. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.9 pct Cb with 0.030 Ta, 0.016 0, 0.0025 H, 0.003 Mo, 0.021 Fe, 0.005 C, and 0.002 N. The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams5 and metallographic examinations at X750, all additions were in solid solution. The alloys were arc melted and remelted 6 times in the form of cubic 400-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot forged at 1200oC to 0.6-in. diameter, annealed for 3 hr at 1200o under argon, and furnace cooled. The specimens were then machined to 0.400 -in. diameter. Grain size was checked and found to remain essentially constant at 150 i 30 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold swaged to 0.187-in. diameter, yielding 46 i 1 pct cold work. All alloys were chemically analyzed for the major solute. Analyses of random samples indicated that the impurity content remained at the values of the starting material. Tungsten contamination was held to 0.007 pet.

Mineral industry decision-makers are frequently required to select between competing equipment. Various criteria and methods are currently being used, and this writer would like to suggest a method recently tested on two large power shovels in an open pit mine. An initial examination of both shovel A and shovel B indicated that the latter should give the best overall results. since: 1) It swings 13% faster; 2) it carries a dipper with 23%: greater capacity; 3) purchase price is 8.6% lower; 4) shovel weight is 12.5% greater; 5) it has considerably greater bail pull under most operating conditions; 6) the electric controls are of a more modern design. However, shovel B has half the service life. With these points in mind, shovel A was selected by The Buckingham Method, an operations research technique.

The photograph, Fig. 1, shows the apparatus a little less than half size, consisting of a filtering-flask fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a bent glass tube, and an extraction-thimble fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a glass tube of 0.25-inch bore. Both tubes are connected by a short piece of rubber tubing. A section of a thimble is shown in the photograph ; the tube extends to within & in. of the tapered end. The object of using the thimble is to remove the acid from the beaker after all the copper has been precipitated. Time is saved, the copper is not exposed to the acid alone, and there are none of the losses attending ordinary filtration. I have accomplished these results by means of a piece of perforated platinum fastened in the end of a (0.25-in. bore glass tube and a filter-mat of asbestos, but after my supply of proper length fiber became exhausted I could not replenish it even after purchasing 14 lots from four different dealers. The above apparatus may be used to remove at least seven-eighths of a supernatant liquid from a settled precipitate without disturbing the latter. The application of the thimble is best shown by partly outlining the assay for copper, as follows: Dilute the acid solution of copper and other sulphates to 150 cc. in a 200-cc. Jena beaker, place on a hot plate, add 2 drops of concentrated HCl, then place a strip of aluminum in the beaker (this may be bent or straight, as desired). Connect the apparatus, as shown in Pig. 1, with a filter-pump having a strong suction. When the copper is precipitated, remove the beaker from the hot plate and insert the extraction-thimble alongside the strip of aluminum. The acid solution will be drawn through the porous tube. IN furtherance of the policy of acquainting those members of the Institute who live at a distance from New York with all the details of administration, the thirty delegates sent by the local sections and the technical divisions were invited to attend the meeting of the Directors on Tuesday evening as well as the Directors' dinner immediately preceding. Including the Directors and officers, new and old, the members of the Papers and Publications Committee and the section delegates, more than 70 sat down at the dinner table in the Engineers Club. The attendance at the business meeting that followed was not quite so large, doubtless for the reason that the ladies' fashion show, held in connection with the informal dance, offered attraction that eclipsed that of watching the wheels of Institute business go around.

The terms asphalt and bitumen have been applied interchangeably, although incorrectly on occasion, for centuries to various bituminous materials that were found in nature. Native bituminous materials of only the solid types, deposits of which are found on or near the surface of the ground, together with the principal asphaltic type petroleum bitumens will be considered in this chapter. The international dictionary compiled by the "Permanent International Association of Road Congresses" still gives the full name as "Asphaltic Bitumen" but of recent years the word "Bitumen" has been recognized as most appropriate and is defined by the American Society for Testing Materials as follows: "Mixtures of hydrocarbons of natural or pyrogenous origin, or combinations of both, frequently accompanied by their nonmetallic derivatives, which may be gaseous, liquid, semisolid or solid and which are completely soluble in carbon disulfide." Asphaltic pyrobitumens, as defined by Abraham,2 is a species of pyrobitumen, including dark-colored, comparatively hard and nonvolatile solids; composed of hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies; sometimes associated with mineral matter, the nonmineral constituents being infusible and largely insoluble in carbon disulfide. Deposits of native bituminous materials are found scattered over the entire world, but many are relatively unimportant as far as commerce is concerned. No attempt has been made to cover all of the known deposits. The principal bituminous materials of commercial interest are: 1. Native asphalts, solid or semisolid, associated with mineral matter such as Trinidad Lake asphalt, Rock asphalt and Selenitza, Boeton and Iraq asphalts. 2. Native Asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite and glance pitch, conspicuous by their hardness, brittleness and comparatively high softening point. 3. Asphaltic bitumens obtained from nonasphaltic, semi-asphaltic and asphaltic crude petroleum by distillation, blowing with air and the cracking of residual oils. 4. Asphaltic pyrobitumens of which wurtzilite and elaterite are of chief interest industrially as they depolymerize upon heating, becoming fusible and soluble in contrast to their original properties in these respects.2 5. Mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, characterized by their high crystallizable paraffine content. Native Lake Asphalt At Brighton situated in the southwestern part of the Island of Trinidad is one of the largest deposits of native asphalt in the world.3 The lake is oval in shape, covering an area of 114 acres and having a depth of 285 ft at its center. The material forming this deposit is an emulsion of water and bitumen with a suspension of mineral matter consisting of impalpably fine clay dispersed by nature in the asphalt, and small quantities of silica and vegetable matter. In response to Dr. Ledoux's paper, a large number of metallurgical establishments and individual assayers expressed their willingness to co-operate in the plan he proposed. The necessary samples were prepared as follows : Matte.—A car-load of matte was put through a Blake crusher, then automatically subdivided into tenths by a Taylor and Brunton sampler, and one-tenth passed through Cornish rolls and through a 12-mesh screen. This was again subdivided by an automatic sampler into tenths, and a final tenth, representing 1 per cent. of the original lot, was finished by hand-sampling on an iron floor until 100 pounds remained. This was pulverized to pass a 40-mesh screen and then thoroughly mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant for distribution to the parties co-operating. Copper Borings.—These were taken from a lot of anodes, the dip-samples from several batches having been united, remelted and cast into a plate, which was proved by assay to be of uniform quality in its different parts. Borings from this plate were intimately mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant. Samples were sent out November 1,1894, with the following letter: New York City, November 1, 1894. Samples of matte and copper (about I pound each) carefully prepared in the presence of my assistant and sealed with his seal as below, are sent you by express for assay and report according to the plan of Dr. Ledoux. This paper has been written to summarize the laboratory and field studies leading to injection of Pacific Ocean water into the Third Grubb formation. Laboratory tests for studying the permeabilities of cores to Pacific Ocean water are described. Resu1ts of these tests showed that the water could be successfully injected if it is chertzically stable, sterile, and properly filtered. Clay swelling was shown to be a comparatively minor factor in permeability reduction. Studies leading to development of an economical system for properly conditioning the ocean water are discussed. It was necessary to control pH, calcium carbonate deposition, bacterial growth, iron solubility. oxygen, and suspended .solids. A relatively simple system combining the use of sulifur dioxide, a quaternary rlmmonium chloride, and filtration was shown to adeqrrately control all these factors. This combination has not previozrsly been used as a water treating technique. Evaluation tests of the water conditioning system prior to injection are described, and results of such tests are presented. Control measures needed to insure a continusously adequate water treatment are reviewed. INTRODUCTION The utilization of sea water for waterflooding has only recently been attempted. Knowledge of treating requirements has been limited, and in most cases no water treating has been done. Prior to the initiation of the Third Grubb zone pilot water flood at Ventura, Calif.,1,2 extensive laboratory research was done in an effort to define the treatment necessary to provide a suitable injection fluid. Close coordination and cooperation between field and research personnel were found to be the foremost requisites in developing the most economical and practical method for treating ocean water. LABORATORY STUDIES Plugging Tendencies of Untreated Ocean Water A program of laboratory studies was initiated for the purpose of evaluating whether ocean water could be injected into the formation for prolonged periods of time without causing plugging of the pore spaces of the formation. Because of the fairly low permeability of the formation (averaging about 40 md), it was realized from the outset that a water of exceptionally high quality was needed. Ocean water used in the laboratory studies was carefully filtered through ultrafine fritted glass filters, having nominal maximum pore sizes of 1.4 microns. Permeability tests were then performed on representative core material from the formation. It soon became apparent in these tests that filtration alone was not a sufficient treatment for the ocean water. Prolonged injection of the filtered water caused rapid plugging of the core samples. The permeability decline of a typical sample is illustrated by Curve A in Fig. 1. The several factors which can contribute to this plugging tendency are briefly reviewed below: Interaction with Formation Clays An evaluation of clay swelling effects on liquid permeability was made using core samples from the Grubb formation. An oil was chosen for determining the reference liquid permeability because it would not tend to react with any clays that might be present in the formation. The samples were then extracted, dried, and resat-urated with either treated ocean water, formation water, or fresh water. Permeabilities to the various waters were then determined. Production of both metallurgical and thermal coal represents a significant sector of the mining economy of British Columbia. The coal measures are located in the Rocky Mountains, and the majority of the coal is produced by open pit mining. The coal seams occur interbedded with siltstones, sandstones, mudstones, and shales. Consequently, large volumes of waste rock are generated in the course of open pit mining. The waste rock is consigned to waste rock piles that of necessity must be developed on moderate to steeply sloping terrain. Some of the waste dumps currently under development will ultimately contain in excess of 500 million cubic meters of material, and some of the proposed waste piles will attain heights in excess of 300 m. These waste piles must be developed in a manner that will assure their stability through all stages of development, as well as over the long term after mining operations have been completed. This paper describes methods of waste dump development, factors affecting stability, modes of potential failure, and a simple method for monitoring movements to provide a warning of pending unstable conditions.

The forecast of continued growing demand for phosphate, chiefly for fertilizer, has caused a world-wide rush for deposits by a variety of companies many of which have never before mined phosphate rock. The newcomers are diversifying into this growth industry on the strength of certain capabilities. Among these are the availability of investment capital, mining or processing know-how and marketing experience. Product tie-ins have motivated some into the search. Companies with excess sulfuric acid or potential for making it are in this category. This acid is the most commonly used for dissolving phosphate rock to make phosphoric acid. Base metal smelting companies are prime candidates in this field with by-product acid from roasting processes. Producers of "sweet" natural gas, such as those in Louisiana and Texas, have a potential for recovering low cost hydrogen from excess gas production for the manufacture of ammonia, the main source of nitrogen for fertilizer. "Sour" gas producers, such as those in the Canadian fields, are making sulfuric acid that is combined with western U.S. phosphate to make fertilizer materials. The presence of one or two steel companies in the look-see for phosphate deposits is based on by-product ammonia from coke-oven gas.

BaLatoc mine, the principal gold-producing mine in the Philippines, is 10 miles southeast of Baguio, in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon.' The region is a deeply dissected plateau, ranging in altitude from 3000 to 5000 ft. above sea level. The rocks consist chiefly of granodiorite, diorite, and remnants of metamorphosed sediments, cut by dikes of andesite porphyry and quartz-diorite porphyry. All are intruded by a volcanic breccia plug, oval in horizontal section, about 3200 ft. long and 2300 ft. wide, which is the north central part of the mineralized area. Three main vein systems have been developed (Fig. I): 96, 231 and 364, which strike about N.70°E. and dip 50° to 90°S. Each system is a braided zone consisting of many individual components. They are disturbed by a series of premineral faults or shear zones striking about N.4s°E. Twelve of these produce important effects on the persistence, character, and quality of veins. From west to. east the faults are named (after claims): Hog, Big Gun, Bull, Pine, Lolita, Bar No. I, Bar No. 2, Curt, Sun, Helen, Itoe, and Frog. They are early breaks formed prior to the N.70°E. vein fractures. Mineralization occurs on them but, with several prominent exceptions, they are too low grade to mine. A number of northwesterly striking faults complete the structural pattern. Although they are relatively abundant, the effect on the veins is so small that they do not present any problems in mining or development. All of these faults that have been observed are later than the N.70°E. veins and offset them to the left. Northeast Faults The early northeast faults* are notably continuous in spite of their small displacements, 20 to 100 ft. Frequently they appear so weak that their importance is masked and their identity clouded. The gouge along any of these faults may vary from exceedingly weak at one point to very strong at another point only a short distance away. In other words, the amount of gouge depends on the changes of attitude of the fault plane, and is no indication of the extent of the movement. Places where walls are spread apart are filled with gouge squeezed from tight places. Also, mineralization sometimes obscures fault gouges by replacement. The mineralization of northeast faults has produced several important ore bodies; namely, 231 west on On fault and 96 vein on the same fault. To a smaller extent, Lolita, Curt, Bull, Bar NO.
