The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognised within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralisation is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralisation yield a wide range of homogenisation temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250 - 300¦C and 350 - 400¦C respectively. d30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralisation range from -0.1 to -0.4ë. The mineralisation at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

Contemporary approaches to safety management appear to be failing short of meeting its mark in improving mine safety. This is evidenced by the high workers compensation, high incidence rates and fatalities. Evidence from high-risk and complex organisations points towards safety culture as being important in improving site safety. In more recent years resilience engineering has been touted as a new and innovative way of managing safety. This paper reviews and synthesises previous literature on safety culture and resilience engineering. It then highlights methods that can be used to measure safety culture and resilience engineering, and explores similarities and differences between complex organisations and gold mining to identify opportunities for more innovative approaches to improving safety in gold mining operations through safety culture and resilience engineering.

"Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

Main geochemical problems concerning the environment and mining industry interrelation are connected with the transformation of natural water chemistry by mining wastes. The investigation of many mines in Primorye, the southern part of the Russian Far East, showed that their mining waters have high concentrations of heavy metals and aluminium. Water acidity is primarily connected with the amount of acid-forming sulphide minerals in ores and also depends on the neutralising capacity of rocks. Considerable quantity of metals occur in the waters in dissolved form. Metal concentrations in mining waters exceeds the natural levels by two to five orders of magnitude and can't be reduced to the background levels even after multiple dilution. It is necessary to develop and put into practice new technologies so that to reduce the geochemical impact upon the environment.

A brief review of the Waipipi Iron Sands Limited company history and operations over the past ten years is made along with a summary of the benefits of this mining company to New Zealand. Land rehabilitation procedures in coastal dune lands are described in detail and brief mention is made of a study of animal health and copper uptake. The paper concludes with a summary of the increased emphasis on agronomy and restoration as the mining operation commences dredging in a better class of grazing land.

Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

"The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model. The mine stakeholders can now obtain an accurate ore model that will always be in sync with available data.CITATION:McKinley, S, 2017. Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017. Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discovered in theJiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: 1. porphyry related; 2. metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and 3. sediment-hosted deposit.   The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, the chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings. Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.
