There is a wide spectrum of learning needed in the development of these explorationists: the technical and conceptual skills to carry out exploration efficiently, the professional and managerial skills to apply the exploration in the work situation, the personal attributes required to manage their exploration effectively, and a company organisation that allows them to learn and use these skills and attributes.

The role of government and the community has changed significantly over the last two decades in relation to environment protection, particularly in the mining sector. Increased community expectations have moved well ahead of regulatory requirements, and there is now a much greater appreciation generally of the concepts of ecologically sustainable development and intergenerational equity, and the gap between current practice and practices which would be in harmony with these concepts. Besides providing a `safety net' through regulations to ensure that basic environmental performance standards are met, government is now working proactively with the mining industry to encourage higher levels of environmental performance. This paper describes some initiatives between the Commonwealth government and the industry designed to achieve these higher levels of environmental performance, through programs aimed at the paradigms of best practice environmental management and continual improvement.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. In these cases, a portion of the unwanted sulfur dioxide gas can be used to recover gold in magnetite containing calcines as an economic incentive.CITATION:Guresin, N, Blanco, S and Dunne, R, 2013. Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

The worldwide association of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and rifting is confirmed in New Zealand. In the currently productive Coromandel epithermal-gold province reported Ar-Ar dating of adularia from low sulfidation deposits falls into two groups at 6 and 7 Ma. Bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism has been reported to be K-Ar dated at 9 to 7 Ma and 6 to 5.5 Ma. Epithermal gold mineralisation in Northland is spatially associated with bimodal basaltic-rhyolitic volcanism, with rifting cogenetic with that in the CVZ. The Taupo Volcanic zone (TVZ) is sufficiently young that the presence of a segmented rift with recent bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism can be genetically associated with epithermal gold mineralisation, which occurs as both fossil occurrences and in active geothermal fields. This reinforces the known potential prospectiveness of the Coromandel area and increases that of Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.

The discovery since 1990 of four major orebodies in the Mt Isa Inlier - Century Zn-Pb, Osborne Cu-Au, Cannington Pb-Zn and Ernest Henry Cu-Au - only serves to enhance the already high stature of the Inlier in world mining importance. Currently the known mineral resources of the Inlier represent about 11 per cent of the world's Pb-Zn resources, five per cent of the world's Ag resources, and one per cent of the world's Cu resources. More can be expected to be added to these impressive figures given that two-thirds of the Inlier remains obscured by younger cover. Individually, projects such as Century and Cannington may ultimately achieve `world's best' status; Century's proposed production of 450 000 tpa of Zn metal would rank it close to number one with Cominco's expanded Red Dog project in Alaska. Cannington, with projected production of 660 tpa Ag, could become the world's biggest producer of silver. For comparison, Mt Isa produced 170 000 t of zinc metal and 335 t of silver in 1995. The apparent physical diversity of deposits in the Mt Isa Inlier is matched by a great diversity of opinion as to their origins. Because Ernest Henry is hosted by `porphyries', it is described by some as a porphyry copper deposit, despite mineralisation age possibly post-dating volcanic age by 200 Ma. Cannington Pb-Zn could be a Broken Hill-type (BHT) exhalitive deposit, or a late epigenetic replacement `regional skarn'. Mt Isa - Hilton Pb-Zn deposits appear to have experienced all deformational events and he syn-diagenetic in origin, or may have experienced little of the above and be epigenetic replacement deposits formed late in the major Isan orogeny, some 150 Ma after deposition.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.

Following a pre-feasibility study, Mount Isa Mines commenced a feasibility study on the deposit of the George Fisher Mine in May 1997. Board approval was granted in May 1998 to construct a 2.5 million tonne per annum mine and to upgrade existing concentrator and smelter facilities. The world-class George Fisher zinc-lead-silver deposit is located approximately 22 kilometres north of the city of Mount Isa, in north-west Queensland and is 2.6 kilometres north of the existing Hilton Mine. It will be a large-scale underground mine, sustaining a profitable zinc-lead-silver business in Mount Isa for at least ten years. This paper will outline the details of the mine that was developed during the feasibility and design phase. It will include a description of the mining methods, ventilation, fill, ore handling, services and infrastructure. The utilisation of existing assets and the development of innovative ideas were essential to the successful economic development of the George Fisher Mine.

The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.

The classical metal-slag-gas equilibrium technique was used to study the thermodynamic activity of cobalt, iron and their oxides in iron silicate based slags containing under controlled oxygen potential (3.70 x 10-8 to 2.95 x 10-7 atm) at 1573 K. The measured activity of cobalt oxide in FeOx-25 wt per cent SiO2 slags showed positive deviation from ideal behaviour for melts with up to ten wt per cent CoO. At higher silica contents, the behaviour became closer to ideal and in accord with previous studies on silica saturated slags. The activity coefficient of FeO in these slags had virtually no dependence on the CoO content. Partial substitution of silica by lime resulted in an increase of the activities and activity coefficients of CoO, FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. The results indicate that saturation of the slag with a magnetite phase occurs at CaO contents of five wt per cent and higher. Phase equilibria studies SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO slags containing cobalt were also carried out using the drop-quench technique. Results from these experiments confirmed the formation of a magnetite solid solution containing about three wt per cent CoO at lime contents of five wt per cent and higher at 1573 K and 2.9 x 10-7 atm of oxygen.
