The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

In response to the need for improved magnetic separators for beneficiation of fine grained iron ores that have been finely ground to liberate the iron minerals from the gangue, a series of high efficiency wet drum permanent magnetic separators (T-GCT) has been developed by Maanshan Tiangong Technology Co Ltd. These magnetic separators have high efficiency for separating superfine strongly magnetic minerals and the ability to produce high-grade concentrates with high recovery. They are ideal replacements for conventional drum magnetic separators, especially for treating superfine particles.

Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

A detailed study was undertaken on the effect of Fe+3 in combination with LIX64N during copper electrowinning from sulphate electrolytes. The results show that the presence of Fe+3 not only affects the current efficiency during copper electrowinning but also affects the cathode quality. The effect is enhanced by electrolysis parameters like temperature, circulation rate, current density, etc. No significant effect was found from the presence of Fe+2. The presence of Fe+3 along with LIX64N causes a synergistic effect and results in a drastic fall in current efficiency. Moreover, cathode quality is also affected. A pyramidal structure is favoured in the presence of Fe+3 but the presence of LIX64N along with Fe+3 promotes a ridge structure. Addition of thiourea not only causes modification of cathode deposits, but also a rise in current Efficiency.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 per cent of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. So, it is important to consider the seismic stability and reliability of all structures including tailings dams.In this study, the tailings dam stability of the Sangan Iron Ore Mine in Khorasan Razavi, Iran is considered for the case study. The tailings storage facilities of the mine have three cells with the capacity of 45 million cubic metres. The first cell, which has three stages of dam raising, has been recently brought into operation. This cell has a downstream-raised retaining embankment. As the risk of seismicity in this area is high, seismic response of this dam was evaluated by numerical methods. To do this, appropriate models were developed for materials used in foundation and body of the embankment. Then for seismic stability analysis, Tabas (Iran – 1978) and Chi-Chi (Taiwan – 1999) earthquake acceleration simulations were applied.The results of this study indicated that the upstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam and dam crest did not experience significant horizontal displacements during earthquake period, but the downstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam showed a maximum horizontal displacement of 60 cm at the third stage of dam raising. This is three times more than what was estimated by the designer. Also, the maximum vertical displacement resulting from simulation of the Tabas earthquake was 35 cm. The results of dam response to Tabas and Chi-Chi earthquakes indicate that displacement, shear stress and pore pressure by the Tabas earthquake were higher than the case of Chi-Chi earthquake. The higher energy of Tabas earthquake and the higher frequency near to the natural frequency of Tabas earthquake could be the reasons of this difference. The results of this case study confirm that if the studied tailings dam impacted by an earthquake of a similar magnitude to Tabas, the dam will be seismically stable and the developed strains will not be significant.CITATION:Delavar, A, Rashidi Nejad, F and Ganjian, N, 2015. Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn. The active history of foreign investment in the mining industry has resulted in Australia emerging as a major world producer of a range of mineral commodities. The current contribution to the national economy represented by mineral production and export revenues would not have occurred without both capital and expertise provided by foreign investors in the past. The initial foreign investment has led to the formation of Australian majority owned and controlled multi-national mining groups such as BHP Limited, CRA Limited and MIM Holdings Limited. These Australian companies, and others, are playing a significant part as foreign investors in the mining industries of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The study examines issues of importance in foreign investment in each of the countries. It concludes that in Indonesia, the nationalisation of the Dutch mining industry in 1957 did much to deter foreign investment. The remarkable degree of policy stability brought about by the Contract of Works system since 1967 has gone a long way to restoring that confidence. The level of investment in the Indonesian mining sector is steadily increasing. Its attraction to Australian investors is a combination of policy stability, favourable fiscal terms, geological prospectivity for a range of commodities and proximity to Asian markets to the north. PNG has a stable policy regime which until recently has been free from political interference at the administrative level. As such, investors were developing confidence in the system and investment was progressively increasing as evidenced by growing exploration expenditures up to 1988. The 1989 Bougainville revolution caused a re-assessment of PNG's investment and country risk. The recent Mt Kare incident has further raised concerns over the government's ability to guarantee internal security. Foreign investors are faced with weighing concerns with the risks of operation in PNG against the undoubted geological prospectivity of the country. The fiscal regimes of Australia, Indonesia and PNG were compared by means of a simulated open pit gold mine in each country. The effect of taxation is examined by reference to the relative change in project internal rates of return (IRR). The comparison of the relative differences between pre-tax and post-tax IRRs provides a measure of the relative attractiveness of each fiscal regime.

The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.

The level of salinity that various aquatic organisms can tolerate without incurring any adverse effects is dependent on several environmental and evolutionary factors. These factors include the relative concentrations of different types of dissolved salts in the water that makes up their habitat, the regimes to which organisms are exposed to waters of differing salinity levels (including naturally derived variations), the degree to which an organismÆs life history stages have adapted to salinity, an organismÆs ability or behaviour to avoid adverse levels of salinity and an organismÆs capacity for osmoregulation.Release of saline water into rivers of the Fitzroy catchment has created concern about the impact on aquatic organisms. Not only is salinity itself a stressor on organisms but different ionic compositions will moderate the effects. Ecotoxicology experiments were conducted using artificial saline water based on mine water chemistry using sensitive macroinvertebrates collected from the catchment, as well as a range of laboratory organisms in accordance with the ANZECC and ARMCANZ (2000) guidelines. The 95 per cent ecosystem protection value calculated from species sensitivity distribution derived from the commercial tests was estimated to be ~2.0 mS/cm. For the protection of 99 per cent of the species the salinity has to be reduced by more than 50 per cent to 0.91 mS/cm. The electrical conductivity (EC) values, derived by commercial testing and species sensitivity distribution in this study suggests that salinity contaminant trigger values previously developed using a referential approach for protection of aquatic ecosystems from saline mine water releases in the Fitzroy may be conservative.CITATION:Vink, S, Mann, R, Nanjappa, V and Prasad, R, 2013. The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. The base metal ore from the hanging wall of White's orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., is composed of copper and oth.er sulphides in a rock described as a phyllite,.which consists essentially of micaceous minerals with a little graphite.Fast selective flotation was obtained in acid circuit below pH 3·5. In neutral or alkaline circuit flotation was generally slow and selectivity very poor due to the ready flotation of part of the sericite. However, it was found that fast selective flotation could be obtained in neutral or alkaline circuit by either of two treatment methods following pre-conditioning in acid circuit; firstly by decanting or filtering a substantial part of the circuit liquor, and secondly by neutralizing with soda ash or lime, providing the collector was added before neutralizing. Otherwise pre-conditioning with acid brought about no improvement whatever.To explain this behaviour, three possible reasons for the flotation of part of the sericite are examined. There is evidence that some sericite floats because of thin films of either sulphides or graphite, but it seems likely such particles will float under all the conditions investigated.On the other hand, if it is assumed that part of the sericite floats because it is activated by metallic ions derived from the circuit water, a reasonable explanation can be given for the variations in flotation behaviour.INTRODUCTIONWhite's uranium orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., sixty miles south of Darwin, is mined and treated by Territory Enterprises Pty. The paper focuses on explosibility conditions in underground coal mines, the behaviour of explosions from initiating gas ignitions to violent dust explosions and the effectiveness and limits of operation of current designs of passive explosion barriers in suppressing the flame front. Areas of particular emphasis include: passive explosion barriers are not designed to protect personnel in the flame initiation zone and its immediate surroundings; passive dust and water barriers are generally considered ineffective against methane ignitions of the magnitude that can occur at the working face; dispersal of suppressant from passive barriers is adversely influenced by equipment, including conveyor belts, located in the barrier zone; current regulations in Australia do not specify the installation of barriers in all roadways leading to the face, so their use has a limited capacity to contain explosions; a manifest design limitation is that passive barriers are restricted to one operation and are therefore ineffective against repetitive fire gases explosions; and the practice of stone dusting in roadways inbye the barrier zone could conceivably adversely affect the operation of passive barriers. The paper discusses performance evaluations made in full scaleexplosion galleries and the use of alternatives to passive barriers,including the installation of active barriers under some circumstances.
